2024 Oklahoma State College Football Schedule Preview

if last year taught us anything it is to never doubt Mike Gundy Oklahoma State wasn't supposed to do much of anything in 2023 maybe a six seven at best eight- win team and yet the Cowboys what did they do they won 10 games and were the big 12 runner up it was an unbelievable coaching job by mik Gundy it was unbelievable turnaround for a Cowboys team that started 2 and2 but finished the year 8 and2 I think they greatly exceeded expectations and this is a team now and what is a wideopen big 12 that could not only challenge for a conference title but if they win said conference will make the look at this team guys they are loaded with talent coming back last year wasn't supposed to be much of anything they exceed expectations this year they've got expectations Alan Bowman is back for what feels like his 10th year in college football and the one of the best players in the entire country the FBS leading rusher from last year Oly Gordon who rush over 1700 yards he's back their leading wide receiver Brennan Presley is back their offensive line is back all Oklahoma state has to do is figure out their defense that was downright atrocious if they can do that this is a team that will challenge for a big 12 title they were the runner up last year and what you could argue was a tougher Big 12 than it will be this year even with the additions of Arizona Arizona State Utah and guys like that this is a team that is one of the top teams in the conference and do not be surprised to see them in the hunt for another Title by season's in you take a look at their schedule though interesting games on the Slate it's not like when I look at it it's not one of those schedule that stands out like wow this is super easy or wow this is super hard it's one of those things it's like there are about a million traps on this schedule that could prevent Oklahoma state from reaching their goal and one of the first traps comes in week one and that sounds ridiculous South Dakota State you're telling me they could be in trouble with South Dakota State yeah I I do believe they are in trouble with South Dakota State and if you follow the FCS if you know college football you would understand that this is a jack rabbits Team guys that has won 29 straight games they have won 29 straight games they have won backto back national championships at the FCS level it is not far fetch to think the jack rabbits could come in to steal water and steal a wind here south Alabama although they're not FCS did it last year in destroy the Cowboys what was it like 33 to7 it is not farfetched to see this team going for 30 straight wins back-to-back national titles to come in and pull off a massive upset to kick off the college ball season we see it every single year Oklahoma State needs to be careful not to fall victim to the jack rabbits this is a good good team guys they are well coached they have a lot of talent they need to watch out for this game I expect the South Dakota State game to maybe be a bit closer than people think maybe they realize you lose that game all pets are off right for Oklahoma State it's they're in trouble for the rest of the year but again we're not predicting anything they're going to be favored people are going expect them to win South Dakota State watch out do not sleep on that do not immediately chalk that up as a w this is a very very very good team then you go to Arkansas Arkansas comes with still water but go to Arkansas in week two this Arkansas Team don't expect much out of them they're going to be I think they're going to probably be pretty bad in 2024 but it is an interesting game it's a Razer back Squad that's going to have new life uh new offensive coordinator by patrino a lot of new pieces for the Razer backs SEC opponent coming to your house can't Overlook them right even as bad as Arkansas was last year and as bad as we expect them to be it's still early enough that I'm sure Sam Pitman has a few tricks up his sleeve so I expect a relatively competitive game against Arkansas so South Dakota State and Arkansas to kick off the year that's not easy that's not easy at all that's not a guaranteed 2-0 it's not even a guaranteed 1 and one the Cowboys have to be on their a game and both of those go on the road to Tulsa okay many expect that to be a win and then you enter what I believe is the key stretch for the Cowboys a key four game stretch here Utah at Kansas State West Virginia at BYU talk about a brutal stretch to really get conference play going you know you start with Utah the newcomer to the conference right move from the Pack 12 to the Big 12 Utah is going to be hopefully healthy this year cam Rising missed all of last year handful of other starters missed all of last year with injuries uh but you've got a great coaching match up between two underrated coaches in the game and Mike Gundy and Kyle Whittingham always getting the most out of their teams and it's massive that Oklahoma state gets this game at home because this is a battle bit arguably between the two or two of the best teams in the conference this is huge when it comes to the standings it's huge when it comes to the Big 12 title picture Oklahoma state gets to host the UTS that's big that's massive the battle between Oklahoma State's offense Utah's defense which is always very strong I'm very very excited for this game one of the top games in the entire Big 12 this season season comes on September 21st but it's massive then they go on the road to Kansas State that's another big 12 title Contender they got to go to Manhattan yeah they beat Kansas State last year upset them 29 to 21 that was the game that propelled the Cowboys to their bounce B that was the game that kicked off a five-game winning streak for Oklahoma State last year so Kansas State kind of gave them that spark in 2023 can they continue that in 2024 but now they got to go to Manhattan against a team that is always very good defensively and has a very dangerous gr ground game now led by quarterback Avery Johnson is going to be one of the better dual threat quarterbacks in the conference but also in the country so Utah Kansas state two of the best teams in the conference you get them back-to-back weeks then you come back home and you take on West Virginia you want to shoot out over the Mountaineers 48 to 34 last year Neil Brown saved his job with a nine- win season and they've got a lot of talent coming back they have their eyes set on a big 12 title at least in the hunt for one getting that game at home is massive but West Virginia also a very good ground team it's going to be very tough to stop if Oklahoma state does not Shore up that defense kanada State's going to run all over him West Virginia is going to run all over them they're going to be in big time trouble and they get their by week and then they go to BYU they got to go to Provo that's not an easy place to play we know that out in Utah not easy and they only beat BYU 40 to 34 in double overtime last year it was a wild game from start to finish that game that Oklahoma State won ultimately clinched them the spot in the Big 12 Championship but BYU expect to be a little bit better this year they get home F advantage and if you think they don't have this game circle on your calendar well you're wrong they are definitely hungry for this game if they had won that game would have clinched B eligibility would have gotten there and would have ruined Oklahoma State's Big 12 title H everything was on the line for BYU on that game for both teams Oklahoma State end up getting the win but BYU Wants Revenge in this game no doubt about it so that's your four game stretch there it's a very crucial four game stretch Utah Kansas State West Virginia BYU that will Define Oklahoma State season especially if they do start 3-0 if they don't start 3 and 0 they're going to be in trouble but if you start three you know you've got to survive that four game stretch probably at three in one or better if you want your shot at a big 12 title or maybe even a playoff birth because here's the thing the rest of the schedule's pretty easy at Baylor the Bayers have struggled mightily under Dave Randa the last few years we don't really know what to expect from this year hopefully a little bit better hopefully the winning season but I don't think Oklahoma State's very scared of Baylor even with the game being in Waco Arizona State ironically these two teams did play last year in a non-conference matchup now they are in conference play Arizona state is now a member of the Big 12 and they had and they beat the Sun Devils 2 7 to 15 last year on the road at TCU we've seen some Classics between Oklahoma State and the horn frogs in recent years just recently two years ago when TCU had their magical run all the way to the national championship game but again TCU was a very big disappointment last year a lot of unknowns in year three under Sunny dkes by week Texas Tech they were disappointing last season they're off a week of rest they're at home looking good and then at Colorado don't really expect much of the buffal this year their defense was atrocious last year it's senior day for the Buffalo yes maybe they're a little bit better maybe they with both eligibility but col Oklahoma state would be favored in this game would be expected to win this game and with this type of offense might torch that Colorado defense if they don't fix something quickly fun old Big 12 matchup though Colorado finally making their way back to the conference from the Pack 12 so again guys you look at this that back half of the schedule is not too bad for the Cowboys it's not too bad at all this is a team that has the coaching staff they've got the talent they've got the momentum everything's on their side to potentially make another run back to the Big 12 champ championship game and if you can do that as a 10- win team maybe even 11- win team somewhere around there you're you're going to have a very good shot at the playoffs if you win the Big 12 you're going to the playoffs so Oklahoma state is a playoff team they have fallen so short of that ultimate goal in recent years under Mike Gundy this is as good a time as ever to finally break that curse to finally get into a playoff to finally have their shot at a national title
