Penguins Trade for Kevin Hayes | Reaction

[Music] what's going on everybody Smitty from around the 412 here uh just want to talk about the Kevin Hayes trade a little bit the Pittsburgh Penguins acquired Kevin Hayes in a second round pick in 2025 for uh well if you're popedia putting out the post about it nothing they are just getting out from the cap space of him future considerations is the way that it is put uh from a technical standpoint um but they're doing the Penguins doing them a favor basically taking Kevin Hayes off their books getting a 2025 second round pick in return but Kevin Hayes to me still a player that can be useful for the Penguins I don't think he's completely washed I don't view this as like a Jeff Carter situation um where you were just talking about burying a contract hopefully hopefully for a couple of Seasons uh 32y old Kevin Hayes 13 goals 16 assists last year in 79 games obviously the trade to the blues salary being retained on Phillies prior to that trade with the blues so he'll make 3.6 from the penguins that is the cap hit over the next two seasons for the team um I do think that there is some play driving still within there um Jas my dude Jason on X everybody that is part of Penn's Twitter I feel like knows who that is the cat profile guy um put it out there I I do think that like a pairing uh I don't know who the duo would play with but I think a guy like uh Kevin Hayes can definitely get something out of Al Terry potin in be curious to see who that other linemate would be could have beat Riley Smith Assuming he's still on the roster um something's got to give with the centers as well when you look down you know top to bottom Sydney Crosby of Denny malcol um lar Zeller Kevin Hayes Noel achari is aari gonna play the wing now is one of these guys going to be moved fingers crossed it would be aari if so um would much rather move him than lar Eller you could play aari on the wing you could play erer on the wing um I do think that they want to play Hay Hay at Center I do think he'll be the 3C that's where he's going to slot in as um look at some underlying stuff here you guys know Jay fresh we'll pull up his J fresh card for you guys to get a better look at here um as you guys can see 51% War you see where the offense is compared to the defense doesn't bring much to the power play uh primary assist still up there obviously wasn't playing with great teammates in St Louis um but at the same time also wasn't going against great competition because he was on their their third line there in St Louis um but this just kind of goes to show like I said there's still something in the tank to me it is funny to see he kind of just fits the mold right with the finishing still but 50% the skating is kind of gone as his age has gone so you know he's not somebody that I'm expecting to contribute in a top six perspective I don't think he's going to be the guy that all of a sudden improves this power play something that as penguin fans we have been clamoring for but there's his J fresh card and then we can take a look at his micro stats as well great information from these folks if you guys these are must follows as any hockey fan uh in my my opinion you see where his even strength offense is compared to the defense he can still contribute in that uh respect as well um not a guy that plays on the penalty kill so that kind of goes into my thinking that they would like to keep lar Zeller on the team um so we'll see if that is the case you see you see the skating speed like all all the stats honestly they're not going to lie to you they they tell the entire picture here in my opinion but like I said I don't think that it's a complete wash here I do think that they still have a useful player to play Within the bottom six here for a couple of seasons and it's a domino to fall I kind of thought that there would be more activity from the Penguins up until this point thought we could see a trist and jar trade thought we could see a Riley Smith trade maybe this opens the door up for a Riley Smith trade or like larella and oari like I mentioned before but to me this is just part of the puzzle in terms of what Kyle dubis is week is going to look like free agency obviously starting on 7-1 that could be happening depending on the time you guys are watching this video um but Kevin Hayes in a second round pick let's talk about the second round pick aspect of this too right because St Louis team that I don't necessarily expect to be very good in the 2024 2025 season this could be a high second round pick and you look at the value that that could provide somewhere in the six to eight million dollar range in terms of what that pick could be worth I think you're looking at like a floor pick 42 is um but this could be a very high second round pick and that is why the penguins made this deal more so than acquiring Kevin Hayes in my opinion I think Kyle dub is basically buying a draft pick in the process you're getting a player that you feel like can fit within the bottom six of the team but it's more about the draft compensation for me and I think for the team in this case here what's it going to lead to what is the Fallout from this deal I'm not so sure we kind of got to watch to see if it plays out I would think that this means another move is looming from somebody currently on the roster um because I think that they want to be active in free agency as well uh article came out a shortly after the draft um you know that they were trying to move Tristan jar they are trying to move Riley Smith not finding suitors on them right now and a lot of the roster has some type of no movement Clause no trade clause so it's kind of like I I know that dub has put himself in this situation so I can't really absolve him of the blame there um but it's going to be really hard for him to get out of some of these contracts Ryan grave certainly is one that he would like to have a do over on can't imagine that you're gonna find a Suitor for that deal I know a lot of people were hoping that a bad contract would be going the other way and the Kevin hay deal but instead it's them buying a draft pick which I think people will take as well certainly I'm completely okay with deal I think you got a useful player for the bottom six and a 2025 I think High second round pick out of it for absolutely nothing just for
