but deadly virus spread by mosquitoes it's deadlier than West Nile Virus and now officials in two states are urging people to stay indoors at dawn and dusk joining us 11 Alive medical correspondent Dr sujatha ready Dr ready what exactly is deadly about this virus what makes this so much more dangerous so this is the ecoin en sephtis virus and what makes it so dangerous is that en sephtis is a brain infection and anything that affects your brain is obviously going to be very serious so this is the problem the good news here is this is very rare there are only about five to 10 cases of this per year Georgia is one of the states that tends to get a couple of these cases but it's very very rare and most people that get this are going to do okay if you get this virus about 30% of people will actually die from the en sephtis part of it and the ones that survive may have some brain damage we do want to mention there are no cases in Georgia so far but there have been in the past yes and recovery from inil itis is horrible I mean it is a long term disability it can be people that have this if they survive can have brain damage but the other part of this even though the good news is it's rare like we said but half of people typically don't get the severe form if you get the severe form that's the issue the good news is the way to save yourself obviously avoid mosquito bites which we all should do anyway PR hard to do in the South right well there there's some tips we know this you can use insect repellant if you're going to be outside get rid of standing water and hard is horrible though well there's other ones you can use you can use lemon eucalyptus as well but still better better than nothing or you can stay inside Dust to Dawn like you said make sure your screens are okay but the best the best way to protect yourself from this rare disease is to go ahead and avoid mosquito bit I'm just being a contrarian today when when I hear about the avoidance of mosquitoes in South I shake my head because DEET is horrible I mean it's so terrible for kids you don't want any part of but there are more natural options we get them for our kids now you can there at least there are more options and there used to be I've played so much golf in my life those other
