Kansas Steamrolls Lindenwood

Intro I think it's pretty clear that Jeff Grimes stepped into the facility and realized wait a minute he''s got great weak receivers and J D is our quarterback let's throw the ball thanks for the atmosphere at Children's Mercy Park talk about J Russy park right obviously a lot of conversation the offseason is big but build new stadium they're going to be playing two games in children Mercy Park four Ys in our head Stadium uh so let's just start there children Mercy Park you are both there what what was kind of your thoughts on the experience the atmosphere sort of the fs all of that throughout yeah we had great seats to pick up the atmosphere right because with way that that uh Children's Mercy is set up uh the spill over for the Press area you know is just outside and so uh we we had a great a great feeling for it the Acoustics really carry sound in that place I thought you know when the band was playing I thought it was really loud you know I thought the crowd was really loud to start off and because of that Nick I I think it was almost kind of The Best of Both Worlds right because you had we had talked coming out of the spring about how in the spring game it was kind of cool seeing the Spring Showcase o over at rockchalk Park because it was a more intimate atmosphere your sight lines were you know were better than they would be typically you know at Memorial Stadium you felt closer and More in tune to the action but you didn't know how having 20,000 people versus 45,000 plus people how that was going to translate and and I thought you know obviously the the atmosphere died down when it became not so much a game and when both teams you know actively seemed like they were they were playing college football with uh with the chew clock mode on but but prior to that I I really thought it it was the best of both worlds you had a great atmosphere with a lot of noise and the things that you want to have for a home field and yet at the same time it was sort of that more intimate setting that that we had talked about where people had a great view of everything yeah and for those that have never been to Children Mercy Park before maybe for a sporting game or just hadn't been there before it's kind of got these really long overhangs that surround about 34s into the stadium and that really helps I think with creating a louder atmosphere because a lot of that sound stays in I think uh so yeah I agree with you 100% I thought I thought the crowd was great uh Melo Dawson made a point in post game to talk about how he was actually surprised that the that they you know that D fan showed up which I thought was pretty cool uh and yeah I thought pregame it was pretty cool uh I went out early ahead of the game to try to get a get a sense of the tailgating experience uh what that was going to be like and I was pretty impressed at first but then about oh gosh about 4:30 or 5:00 before the game one those uh one of those nice cous thunderstorms decided to roll through and uh it poured rain for a good probably 15 20 minutes which seemed to maybe kind of uh literally and more metaphorically dampen the uh dampen the Bots it it it rained on your parade yes it did indeed ran on breade so if you were out tail J you probably experienc the same thing I saw many people it was kind of funny because a massive gust of wind came in at first as the front of the storm and so people immediately went to grab all their tents and like hold them down and then it rained up pretty briefly so and unfortunately you know the worst part about that was I think people were probably hoping oh this rain will help make it not as hot well instead it did the opposite and just made it worse uh so that was annoying as well but yeah so I tried to go out and get a general sense of Fan Experience I think it was overall pretty positive you know walking you the stadium seemed like people were uh enjoying things the one thing I will say and I'm curious about if anybody that also went to the game wants to share a comment or text us on the on the mid hotline is uh they did not exactly make finding where you're supposed to park very easy at all uh it there was a lot of rows that were blocked off there were people that were seemingly directing people in different directions I heard from one fan who said that like 40 people directed him went down three different roads and they were all wrong so uh so that's something to maybe keep in mind I guess that I don't know I'm curious people had the same experience or people were able to find sort of where they were supposed to go parking wise uh fairly easy or easyier I guess I should say but but yeah overall I think uh I think if you're Travis golf if you're L lockal if you're T gota be probably pretty happy I think with how this first game uh turned out in terms of The Fan Experience um my only real criticism and this is just a me thing is we we can we can do away with the fireworks guy uh time that went off I about jumped out on my shorts it was horrible every time it went off it was not fun I I did not enjoy it I think we can you know hey Travis we can we could probably go ahead and uh that guy that's my opinion I understand people different league but other than that it was great they did some on field pyro stuff the flyover was obviously I thought really cool yeah as well so I think they did a great job overall of sort of keeping the same Fan Experience that you would have got at Memorial Stadium uh at children Wesley Park which was cool so overall again I think you probably got to be happy if K if trap SC at this point with the first game yeah you have to be I think you know like you said there were some bumps in the rotor or whatever else whether it was the weather whether it was the the parking I I don't know when you pulled in what your experience was I I 100% had the the guy direct me kind of in the in the wrong way to get to where I I needed to go um but but at the same time you know it turned out really really really well I thought it was um a beautiful but extremely hot and humid night for for college football but once once that sun started going down it it was pretty nice out there had a had a nice little breeze to it too and you know the thing is Nick is we only got one more game at at Children's Mercy you know the the UNLV game and then the other games will be at Arrowhead and Arrowhead has you know one of the easiest parking lots to to navigate in terms of when you go in and you know you've got 35 people pointing you directly to your very specific parking spot uh and so uh I'm sure they'll they'll Iron Out The Kinks for the for the second game at ch's Mercy and then and then on to uh on the aad yeah so okay let's get into the game a little bit here then with t g Lon wood uh you know the betting line we talked about and I think on a pretty show it opened at like 43 goes up to like 48 everyone's hammering KU lynen Kansas starts the season 1-0 wood is being touted this like one of the worst teams ever and the start of the game did not really indicate that uh well to begin with it really did actually to start K pretty much effortlessly after a three and out went right down the field uh Deon Neil doing his thing averaging about 12 yards a carry and he goes in and scores again and it's become traditional at this point that Devon Neil is the guy that scores the the opening touch for the season it would see three three three years right right that he has scored the the opening touchdown and so you you almost you know at this point it almost feels like he should come back next year and do it in a ceremonial roller or something just just to make sure things keep going that way but no and one of the other things I thought that was really interesting on that first drive Nick was they took two shots down the field on back-to-back plays both were Great Falls by by Jaylen Daniels uh didn't result in a complete I thought you know the one to Quinton Skinner I I thought the defensive back made a a pretty good play on it was in Skinner's hands but you know he he kind of fought through the catch and Skinner you know wasn't able to control it before he kind of went out of bounds and landed on the ground and the other one to Luke grim and I think you know while both of those fell incomplete you felt like hey like jaylen's not showing a whole lot of rust here like those are two really good balls in those situations Kansas actually wound up going for it on a fourth down um and they ran sort of this little concept that was like a little rub route where you had one guy you know kind of running a a short you know in another guy running a short out um and he hit the out to to Luke Graham it was the same play that um out of a different formation that they wound up running later on a fourth down to convert but they converted the fourth down went in and scored and you're at that point you're saying hey you know can't get any better than this three and out straight into uh straight into a touchdown great great start to the season yeah at that point I was thinking okay Kansas is going to win this game by a lot of points as that unfolded but then you know there was kind of Cl of the game and we'll get more into that after a break first do always have to tell you about our friends at the link is also in the show notes of this episode okay Kenny's up 7 nothing like I said at this point I'm thinking this could get really bad really quick for for from lyen wood uh but then you hit definitely probably the worst section of the game for K uh lyonwood gets the ball and they're able to move it pretty well but then uh we finally get a chance to see Dean Miller make play obviously he's been a guy that's there's been so much talk about him over the summer and fall camp and I finally got a chance to see him make huge play on a fourth down he getss a big sack to get the ball back to Kansas and he talked a little about that play and how he didn't even really know what to do at but he got sack he just kind of he just kind of like did his thing but he did make sure to mention de Miller did a postgame that he does indeed have a sack celebration that he has supposedly been in the lab working on that we may see at some point later in the season but for the first one he just kind of he just kind of exploded with devotion but certainly great to see I mean this is a guy that you know he talked about it Lance cold has talked about it in this greaten L cold said look you're not going to play here if you don't you know bulk up if you don't increase your size and it's clear that he has put in the hard work and dedication to make that happen and so I think just to see him out there making plays right that's that's what you want to see because at this point obviously you've got some really really talented young players defensive position but no no Austin Booker uh you need somebody that can be sort of that impact player in team moment say and Dean Miller maybe looks like he could become that guy yeah and one of the encouraging things about that play was three different guys could have gotten the sack there you know I mean dean Miller absolutely annihilated the the offensive tackle to to get the sack but Jeremy Robinson was only a half step behind him and maybe at about the same time as Jeremy Robinson or or a quarter step behind Jeremy Robinson was DJ Withers getting through and so you know on that fourth down Kansas pass rush absolutely got home but Nick we were talking you know sitting up there next to each other and you wanted to see Dean hold up against the run right because that was a big part of will this guy get to play and what will his role be ever since he arrived at Kansas will he be able to add the bulk the strength you know maintain the weight that he needs to hold up against the run at that defensive end spot but I think you even mentioned it you know at the time where you really wanted to see him stand out was hey you are an athletic guy when it's in a pass rush situation like this is where I want to see you shine like this is where I want to see why you're on the football field and on that play he he certainly did that yeah absolutely and really great to see like like you said it and the one thing is I still I mean just looking at him on the field he still looks kind of small I I you know I don't know small is right not the right tone but maybe not quite the same size as the other guys which is is fine I guess you know we'll see I I maybe you know projecting long term throughout the course of Big 12 Play I I I have a little bit of concerned about teams maybe trying to exploit that especially on the ground game you know um but for now in this game against lwood he looked good right the speed rush was was really effective pretty much all night long from not just Ste Miller but from other guys you know um the Sha w got a lot of playing time DJ wared up the Freshman he was out there quite a bit early and often got out there actually on the second defensive series I believe for about three or four plays for KU so he was out there early and often and yeah I mentioned to you about DJ Warner is that like we talked about D Miller who we wanted to see flash DJ Warner did not flash but he certainly wasn't making playing making any real mistakes right like he he was he was doing his job most of the time which is which is fine to see from a freshman uh but he didn't really flash which again is not a bad thing at all I don't want to pain that as something that's negative um but because he I thought he overall probably did pretty well uh you know I'll be sure I'd be curious to sort of be a fly on the wall in the film room breaking down that you know to say to see if if if he kind of did what KU hoped he was going to do out there but he had a lot of play time and so did some other freshman uh later in the game J and Todd got in quite a bit all well uh we get to see Harris Stewart as well at the running back position the one guy we did not see was Zeke Marshall and Lance Lio kind of spoke on that a little bit in postgame talked about how Ben Easter got his chance against Cincinnati last year and they they kind of wanted to give Mikey PA a chance uh I guess to play at this point and you know if if you want to kind of go 104 hat on this and sort of you know try to Mega outbrain yourself you know forward playing Ford D chess and if if kenu PL to Richards zek Marshall you only get four games to play him in and if you wanted to sort of you know extrapolate that thought out why would you burn one of the four games you could play him and if you want to spare his red shirt in a game where do you know you're just going to be running the ball sh at the middle because that's all M PA did he ran the ball shd play uh so I don't know I thought I mean it's a little weird I guess I mean I don't want anybody to to to sit back and think well the Z Marco Z Marshall is he not very good like why could he not play like I don't don't think that's the case at all but u i I don't know I gu I think I think it might have been just a situation where lold said hey we want to let Mikey Polly get on the seal I guess yeah and I thought that was kind of an interesting discussion that he had you know after the game when he was talking about that decision and he basically you know made it sound like it it was kind of a spur of the- moment thing like hey we we wanted to get Zeke out there but in that situation we were kind of like ah let's let's save the four games you know let's let's go ahead and get Mikey Paulie out there and so like you said it's not any sort of indictment on on zeker or anything like that it does make sense probably to some extent to hey if you're going to get him the four games you know get him games in different situations than what it was you know last night and so I I do think that he's somebody that it wouldn't surprise me at all if we saw him at times this year just not uh just not on Thursday night so I mentioned the the probably the bumpiest part of the game for happened the late SE first quarter early second quarter they get this this the stop on downs but then you get a big play to Quinton Skinner and he fumbled and even in the stadium at the time I think there was some confusion because they kind of showed a replay on the video board and it it looked like he like maybe met have been down or it something like it was a play that warranted review uh and then they just kind of moved on and Lance leel actually uh post game said that or made the claim that I guess the replay was down or something or they didn't have the replay cap abilities at that time uh which was kind of a very bizarre moment I don't really know how that works like if we got a replay on the video board how we not have a replay we can look at you know I don't I don't I don't know it was it seemed a bit strange but uh the end result was that it was a bubble and and lwood took over uh had a had to punt again though K defense is pretty great all night and then you have the interception from Jaylen Daniels on a throw where just a total miscommunication with Luke Grim where he was kind of straighten out the sideline and I think Jayla Daniels expected a comeback it ends up being a pick uh for Lynden wood Jayla Daniels said posting it hey totally my fault you know Luke Grim read the coverage correctly I didn't and it happens and and look you know those are the types of things that I don't want to say you expect to happen but D Daniels hasn't been in a game in you know almost a year and those plays can could happen right and I think it's it's it's okay that it happened in this game though just don't let it happen again I guess yeah and I think too you know I'm not sure it was the right decision even if he had read it the way that Luke Grim read it too you know the safety was right there over the top you would have been pinching that ball into a really small window even if you didn't throw the comeback and instead through kind of the go that that luk Grim wed up running but yeah I mean you expect some Rust in the first game you expect some things to go wrong or or whatever else and and it did go wrong Jaylen though wound up bouncing back I I the unfortunate thing I think with the way that the game played out was I'm not sure jaylen's numbers reflect how good he really was because I I do think that you know he probably had two or three throws on on shot plays that could have been catches and weren't and so you look at the Devon statline at the end of the game you know the the what eight carries for 112 yards and and two touchdowns Jaylen very easily I feel like could have had the quarterback version of that where you complete a really high percentage of your passes you know multiple touchdowns compared to to how your throws went it it was just that that wasn't the way that it it wind up working out in terms of guys completing catches yeah Candace in the second quarter discovered that hey we should get 12 yards of GES just run and that's kind of what they did on their next job with dein Neil uh he had a 53 yard run down the down the near sideline on the on the right side damiel haaw got some runs had had a couple long runs and then Devon Neil CT it off with a touchdown make it 14- nothing and at that point you felt like okay Kansas has shaking off sort of whatever happened to them in the with the two turnovers on back-to-back drives things are looking good and then things got even better for Kansas off and immediate pick six moments later with Bellow doson uh and and yeah I mean Kobe Bryant has been getting a lot of the Fanfare but melod doson man he seems to be right there in terms of his ability you know he kind of broke down that play the postgame talked about how hey I saw that the quarterback was signaling to his receiver that he wanted him to brought a specific route so I was expecting that the ball was going to come in my way and then when I saw him break I kind of knew that that's what it was going to be he just took to the house and yeah that's just what he does Dean Mill said post team a that's just that's just that's just what mow does it's kind of true at this point that's what he does with a pick six uh great play now there was an unfortunate thing that happened uh after this touchdown though from Kies and that was the MRA Point W uh pretty unfortunate tab Allen by the way was was an in start kick I think we talked about that on our on preview show uh the stting place ker for K who had been doing kickoff handling kickoff duties for past couple years uh missed the extra point here other than that he was pretty fine we didn't see him attempt any field goals Beyond extra points so I'm not going to hit the Panic butt immediately off of one ex missed extra point but uh obviously I think it's something that is worth noting because uh I think Lance lipold at least publicly has taken a very Rosy view of the special team situation for KU I'm not taking that view so much as L is uh again I said that I'm panicking about the Special Teams but you know we talked about it you look back at a couple games last season and that you know whether it was play kicking or you know Fielding punts whatever XYZ special teams did hurt Kansas objectively in some games that they all ended up losing uh so I don't know not worthy to say the least so at that point it's 2 nothing Kansas again lard wood really could get nothing going all night they were unable to run the ball and completely they had a hard time passing as well uh so K will get the ball back again and again they would go on another touchdown drive this one I guess you could hardly call it a drive because it was only three plays with Jaylen Daniels going up top to Luke gah and uh I want to take this moment to talk about Jeff Grimes a little bit and sort of what we saw from his play I think it's pretty clear that Jeff Grimes stepped into the facility and realized wait a minute he's got great whe receivers and jayen dalis as our quarterback let's throw the ball because uh he really fell in love with throwing the ball and getting the ball into some of the receivers hands you know Lawrence arold had a catch early in the game and then I think had one later but Quin get GM specifically both were were getting the ball early in often and and Luke Grim obviously had a great de over 100 yards in in a touchdown and on this play I mean just a a straight post where he just blows by his man off play action for a touchdown Jaylen Daniels this was I know you want to talk about a throw later on but this was maybe his best throw of the night in terms of putting it right on Luke Gman stride down the field for a touchdown yeah I I think that when you look at the way the the offense went over the course of the night I I think two things sit out one I don't want to say vanilla is maybe too strong but Kansas kept it relatively simple in terms of what they showed except that they showed a lot of complexity in terms of a lot of different looks you know you you got some spread concept stuff you got four tight end stuff you know you got the jet sweets that we've talked about on this show that we're going to be a Jeff Grimes staple you got to see you know some different fourth down things and so I when you look at the receivers in particular they got a lot of shot plays right it it wasn't just that hey he's targeting these guys a bunch it's they're targeting these guys down the field and trusting them to go make a play and yeah I talked about how Jaylen maybe was a little bit hurt by the fact that maybe a couple catches weren't weren't made or whatever they weren't outright you know drops they they were they would have been tough catches but you think about where the receivers were a year ago they all had I think catches that made Sports Center top 10 plays and so those are the kinds of plays that you trust those guys to go out and and make sometimes and so as the receivers we we talked to them all through Camp you could hear the excitement that hey one of the things that we like about the quote unquote new offense is that we're going to get our chances and I think that played out on the football field yeah yeah so Luke Graham with a deep touchdown uh great connection there from from Jaylen Daniels and at this point you know K is pretty much back on track it's it's 34 to or it's 47 nothing at this point after the touchdown come from luk GM again lynon Woods really unable to do much Kanas ends getting the ball throwing five but that didn't matter they go 95 yards down the field some a couple of long passes couple of long runs Daniel high shot a long run he gets rewarded with a touchdown to end it and Kanas goes up 34 nothing at the half over lanwood and you're feeling much better than maybe you were earlier on the first quarter early second quarter and the conversation at that point kind of turned to okay well who's going to go out for the second half right are we going to see Jay d are we going to see some of the other starting starting players Jaylen Daniels was done Deon Neil was also down hapton but we still didn't see a lot of the starting offensive lineman in the third quarter uh we did see some of the starting R R st High sha in the third quarter as well with Cole balard leading the way for KU and the success continued I mentioned it and you know I don't it's there's y have to put a cave on on a lot of conversation I think around the game with lingwood because K's offensive line was able to pretty much steam roll guys down the field all night long uh I don't know if that's going to be something DA's going to be able to do game in and game out obviously it looked great at this game where you're averaging literally eight yards a carry essentially uh with no matter who the running back was with the offensive line so you know that looked really good but uh again with the cabul of being lyen wood yeah you know still really nice to see though overall and yeah I think you mentioned it earlier Kevin in the second half Cav just really just kind of turned into hey you know let's get some of the young guys to play time but we are very much going to be you know running the clock and they did that to open the open the second half with San Morrison getting uh seven straight carries I believe it was uh down the field for Ken to to go score another touchdown uh s Morrison did not get or he did get the touchdown that's right get San Morrison to cap it off of the touchdown up for t to make it 41 nothing and and and yeah like I said earlier you know some of the young guys they got out there on offense guys like er Stewarts Doug muan we get a touchdown later on you mentioned sweeps douly was a recipient to bat on a Jet Sweep for he got the first Jeff Grimes Jet Sweep I believe so yep Quin Skinner got one um Trevor Wilson got a screen but not a Jet Sweep right or did he get a Jet Sweep too I believe it just a screen yeah yeah so it was but Doug Doug amilon is your is your winner for for first listen I feel vend I love dog listen there are two players two players that I love more than anybody else it's cidon Morrison and Doug Amilia and both those guys got touchdowns so this game was an A+ in my opinion eight plus well you talked about the second half and then playing a lot of guys it's important to note that before they were rotating guys in the first half but not to that same extent but at halftime KU was averaging 10 and a half yards a play and Lon wood was at three so that was kind of that's kind of where I cut it off myself and terms of saying okay this was the the first team's effort even though they rotated different guys through like this this was the first team versus the first team and then in the second half you got to see a lot of guys come through Lance lold said after the game about 75 players play Nick I counted them 74 so very close Lance lipold if he was in a contest where it's finish the closest but don't goer would have lost but but I say we go ahead and give him credit for pretty much pretty much nailing the number of players that they wind up playing in that the first thought I had was in like Elementary School they have what they'd have like the jar of marbles yes how many marbles are in the jar evidently would be pretty good at that maybe so because he was doing a good job counting Claire's going in the game so yeah I mean really great to see that that kin has got about that amount of players in the game as well uh you know we talked about Mikey Paulie coming in as well also later on in the game as Kanas just kind of you know Clos this one out is it I think let me ask you this does it matter to you at all that anes didn't get the shut out does does that matter it doesn't necessar it would have been nice to have I I think it it's one of those where you say with a defensive effort like that you really would have liked to to finish that off even if it was you know rotating through a bunch of young guys at that point I think you still would have liked to to close that out so ultimately it didn't matter it probably mattered to people of a certain betting persuasion because if you got the opening line you know it was what 43 and a half or or right around there 43 yeah it wound up pushing all the way up to 48 and a half 49 and so you think about the line would have you know stair stepped into that basically so I'm sure there were some people that probably sat around 46 47 who were just full of Despair to see that field goal go through and then see Kansas you know continue to run clock after that saying no no no throw it down the field get get get the margin here but sorry if you if you didn't get that that early line on there because that that field goal could have could have stung from that standpoint by the way I would be remiss if I didn't mention the fuel goal dry the limit will Wi on what lyndenwood went on I mean this is this is Hall of Fame level a few Lenwood 14 plays 75 yards over seven minutes for Feld go y those those are those are your favorite drives I mean it for those who missed it I I would highly recommend going back it was a lot of fun doing the the rewind Series where we looked at every game from last year and you will find that Nick's love Savon Morrison and Doug ailon is perhaps only eclipsed by really long drives that end in three points yeah yeah and this was obviously in this case it was a sad field goal on top of they could have easily just got me you know you could have gone for it but you know a sad Feld well I guess at the end of the game always feels nice if you if you're in that situation you're the lyonwood coach I I know it sounds cliche I I know you got beaten pretty badly but you do really want to just have some positive that that you can that you can pull out and I'm sure that you know talking to the players it's kind of like you went on a 14 play you know SE seven minute drive against a big 12th team like you you can do this so shout out to shout out to lyen Wood and kudos for that field goal Drive even though it did break up the shut out one other guy that that got some playing time later in the game that I I failed to mention earlier by Jo I Joe gone out there as well uh he had a lot of energy uh he was banging his helmet after plays you know all kinds of stuff he he is uh seems to be a very fiery player on the field so I like seeing him he has been dealing with a bit of a a wrist injury I believe he still had the club on his wrist going out there against Lynwood but but yeah nice to see him as well get on the field so overall Kansas I mean I think people may look at the score I guess after like sort of the hype of oh hey lindwood is this really bad team Kansas you know and the line getting bigger and bigger I think people may look at the final score and say uh oh Kansas maybe isn't that isn't this good that's not the case obviously I think this you know it it is what it is I mentioned it you know in our pre- show the score did not matter to me as much in this game as it maybe has in the past with Kansas and FCS schools because of the fact that I I trust that that Kansas is of a certain level of prestige that that the score is doesn't matter uh so so there's that and and yeah I would just say if you were scoreboard watching and you thought oh wow in W by 45 it's not that big of a deal Kansas I think is is still perfectly fine jayen Daniels looked really good I think overall Deon Neil obviously did his thing the defense was was considering the level of opponent the defense was very good uh you saw some rotation you saw some flashes from guys you wanted flashes from haaw trucked over like five Defenders on one run and almost killed a girl on the side headlines that that was one of the more Looking ahead and other thoughts the more humorous moments not her getting run over uh but in the postgame press conference talking to Lance lipold about it because he went over to check on her to make sure she was okay and you know when he found out you know hey she's fine he he joked that he uh he had talked to staff about finding out whether she had any eligibility yeah that's just classic way SLE man always thinking always thinking ahead uh but yeah luckily she was was okay d n helped her out like you said Lance flber checked on her so that was good uh and yeah like I said just to kind of circle back to the start of the show I I think the The Fan Experience overall is was pretty positive for what I could tell it was packs you know was pretty full K fan showed out which is great and I think overall the environment turned out pretty well and now things will get very real for kuu as they look ahead to to illino uh going on the road and they'll have to you know really step it up you know it's like old classic in class went like fashion by the way the end of the game somebody asked him how he felt about the game and you know he said well obviously there are things I didn't like but overall you know then he got a watch everything you could like so uh you know I'm sure KU is gonna be taking advantage of this one other note that uh I wanted to mention about KU playing on this Thursday I know for some opinions maybe people don't like it early in the year but land CLE would give a really interesting answer about this uh sort of peeling back to curtain not in postgame but actually earlier in the week talking about how he likes playing games early to start the season because it actually it allows you to start Camp earlier because you get a certain number of days so you can actually start Camp earlier because he play a game a day earlier and then on top of that and this is obviously significant for T now adding into Illinois you now get an extra two days essentially to prepare for Illinois right so uh you know that's that's the way it's like all the tactician that work there I think thinking ahead and saying hey we can start Camp earlier we can get we can get our players on campus earlier and start early if we play a game a day or two earlier so I know from maybe the fan perspective it can be it can get some bony Browns but uh it's that's it's a lance of tactician at work I think with with that one so now KU can sit back they got some extra time to to you know look at Illinois the other thing the other thing to note though about that is Illinois also played on Thursday night so both teams will be coming up the same level of rest heading into that game Illinois played against Eastern Illinois on on Thursday night also so uh they will both have the same amount of rest so G's not going to really any sort of rest advantage that to get back to against Illinois but uh something to keep in mind so yeah I I think you know it was it it was really smart kind of how that that played out and everything and I I think it gives you a chance not only to have those extra days to prepair and again Illinois has it too but you can give bodies a chance to to recover a little bit from that first game because it's kind of a shock to the system I I think going into that that first game and then two you have extra days to clean up anything that you noticed in the first game where hey maybe we don't need this guy playing this many plays because he's not ready or maybe we need to play this guy more because he he showed something and figuring out what's what's going right what's going wrong I I do it did kind of crack me up Lance is say oh things could always be better because I I think coaches in general but but especially I think Lance lipold and a lot of process oriented coaches I don't want to say they hope for things to go wrong Nick but they are certainly happy when they get a win on one hand and on the other they have things that they can go into the film room and say look like you can't continue to do this and they can clean things up in terms of a player of the game Devon Neil right he's gotta be player of the game I think right yeah yeah it's Devon Neil I I would say the defensively it's Devon Neal but I Luke Grim obviously had a a very good game as well defensively you know I thought even though it doesn't show up in the individual numbers I thought the defensive tackle group was outstanding um and I went ahead and rewatched the game and and came away feeling the same way you know lynen would not only did they get nothing up the middle but I thought that they really controlled the pocket you know from a pass rush perspective you know for the most part quarterbacks didn't really have places to step up to try and get away from guys like Dean Miller buzzing The Edge and so I really thought the defensive tackle play overall was excellent but probably Dean Miller wouldn't you say from the defensive side would would be your defensive player of the game I thought OJ buroughs had a a really good game too yeah I want yeah I wanted to point out OJ Burrows um and of course Melo gets a pick six so Meo get if we if we were playing college football 25 right now Melo doson would get the defensive yeah player of yeah OJ burrow is is a good one to mention uh he actually had a pick on the sidelines that he didn't get a foot down in Balance he made a catch on he made a couple of really nice hits to bring up some passes throughout the game also uh so I am very excited about OJ Bros we saw Harvin Grant primarily planning that uh sort of that uh boundary corner position the sinko position that KU calls it another thing that was interesting was saw a lot of rotating on third Downs where KU had jimy Brown out there and Corell wheeler out there on first and second down they would bring in Jason Gilliam uh on third down maybe help out with extra pass uh you know pass coverage I would think in that case so that was something that was kind of interesting to note early in the game as well but yeah overall gas gets a big win they take care of business they be red in Wood you know red to repeat good job uh this is what power forward programs are supposed to do it's supposed to take care of BU and beat FCS schools regardless of the level of FCS school they are so good job I guess good job and now you look ahead to Illinois on the road in Champagne so once again as always you can share your thoughts with us in the comments on YouTube if you want to send us a text on the kcsn emit Mobile hotline you can do that at 9134 76524 share your thoughts uh give us how you're feeling after the game with taking care of business against lyen know we we'll do some research on it's resarch American thing oh okay okay yes okay well we we'll get the we'll get the research department on that to learn more I guess uh for next week so but that's
