Astros offense shows no life as Verlander returns

will bregman returned with a bang but the Astros failed to win a series against Boston that was very winnable now they go on the road for some pretty tough competition we think they're up to it let's time app create account and use the code locked on ML for $20 off your first purchase terms do apply Brett I know there were some positives in today's game a whole bunch of negatives but I know the Astros are still where we want them to be but I know I was like maybe it's not that bad after losing Tuesday's game but today's game outside of Alex bregman's home run the bats look a little bit lifeless right yeah that's what happens when you sit um Jose Altuve and give him a rest day on a day he should be playing so you can win a series I mean that's what happens and you have three rookies and you leave altu out of the lineup of course it's going to happen um but yeah you can find me at HW house on X Instagram and Tik Tok you can find me at stos 411 on X and on Facebook you can also find me back to the bullpen on X on Instagram on YouTube as well and hey real quick I want to send a shout out to Big City cap Zone and our guy job um with explicit designs this dude um they created they put together these amazing hats got the Retro show them your side patch Eric you've got the Astrodome the Gold version of it I've got the silver I've got the silver star with the purple this is a I've got a trucker fitted um they also sent us look at that boom Eric got the white print I got the black on black and then I've got one more over there just like what Eric's got on so I appreciate you guys for hooking us up with the lids for sure check out our guys at Big City cap Zone they do a bang up job you know Eric I'm not so upset about the series losses as I thought I would be um after watching the game of course there was at the end um the total just absence of bregman and and yordon doing anything in the situation where they could have busted the game wide open at the end and end up winning this game but JV pitched well so there's that bregman came back but we need to really talk about that at some point today in the show because bregman said it's a fluid situation he's dayto day and there's some other details we want to share because that could be a concern going down the stretch yeah I did put that in talking points not necessar on the side here but definitely in the um the YouTube description uh it is something that uh we have to monitor what's going to happen down the road for Alex bregman is he gonna be able to play Third Base so uh let's focus on some of the positives first because we need this I mean two two straight games after winning so many games thankfully the ERS forgot to help play how to play baseball right now and the Dodgers came back from being down three to nothing they came back last night to win six to3 and now the Astros maintain their six game lead uh sorry five-game lead so um we're waiting on what happens today but it is a situation where um you hate to rely on other teams you got to go out there and get that win but it's it's okay the only problem is we'll talk about this in a little bit the Astros have a rough stretch coming up and you hope to win against a team like the Red Sox a team that you've dominated I know it's only three games I guess four games if you count Monday's game but you've pretty much taken care of for most of the the series this season but the Red Sox are a good team I know ryell Blanco said that he said this lineup is good this is a good team and you can't hold them down for long so uh the AL East is a great team is a great division the it looks like the AL West is turning out to be just the Houston Astros but let's focus on the positives Justin Verlander came back after only pitching uh throwing 57 pitches in his last start with the Corpus Chrissy Hooks and he came out and did threw a lot more than we thought he would he threw what 72 pitches I believe no 76 and he threw five innings he did give up two runs six strikeouts one walk four hits but it was basically as good of a start as you could expect it from Justin Verlander after a two-month absence to come back and Astros unfortunately he did get the loss because he gave up the two runs the bullpen gave up uh later two more runs and and then offense couldn't get anything going yeah look um you're you're basically checking boxes at this point in this game you hope that the offense backs up your pck pitcher and does enough to get a win you know they got one run in the first bregman ties it up with the leadoff home run with the first leadoff home run of his career um and but yeah I thought I thought Justin Verlander looked good he said he liked how things worked out after that first inning he said he'd like the location of his pitches and that's what you need look if you truly need a six-man rotation you got to have him in the mix because you have seen r Blanco how he's kind of wavered to good to not so good back and forth the last couple starts Kikuchi should be fine but Eric Getty's still young Hunter Brown we know what happened to him last year down the stretch so getting this six-man rotation in place is is Catamount to this team being successful um but you know honestly Eric I know we have a tougher schedule than Seattle but if I go back to June 1st Seattle's record is 32 and 3 6 since June 1st the Astros record 43 and 25 since June 1st I'll be real honest with you I'm not worried about the Mariners the Mariners can't beat their way out of wet paper sack at this point they struggle they didn't they get swept by the Tigers I mean I know we lost two of three to the Red Sox but we lost we won four of those games four in a row you can't win every single game against every single team um but at the end of the day I still think that this team going forward with the the playoff experience they have and with the bats in the lineup they have even though they're inconsistent that they're going to do enough to get the job done because the pitchers I think ultimately are going to be better in the long run so I'm not worried at all about our hold on the a division other people are the sky's falling that's fine be negative NY I'm gonna be positive Pete every time yeah going back to Verlander he threw 24 pitches in the first inning he said he was hovering around 95 96 he was trying to throw a little bit harder in that in uh maybe the adrenaline was pumping but then when he realized that his stuff was working he actually backed down to 93 94 he said he had some more in to tank if he needed it but he felt really good in his stuff and he started trusting the slider a little bit more so that's why he saw him retire 10 hitters in a row and kind of get on that little streak that got him to five innings so Verlander returning like I talked about in yesterday's podcast it's going to mean great things for ryell Blanco Hunter Brown spenc arti like you just mentioned the whole rotation because it's going to give you extra day of rest and that's what somebody like um we don't see Blancos velocity dipping we don't see any type of physical issues it's just maybe it's the grind uh he surpassed his Innings limit I believe it was 125 now he's at about 135 well you know in the league in the league may have caught up to him Eric I mean that happens and you and I talk about adjustments and we talk about rookies making Jus this guy's 30 yeah I mean so we don't really talk about his like first like his rookie status really being this year because he's pitched more than he ever has so so that right there plays into it and so I'm glad you're mentioning that his velocity is not down because that is a key thing it's just look there's more book on you there's more evidence there's more video and what do Astros hitters do typically and I hope we Face people we've seen because when we Face someone we've never seen we Face a rookie our offense does not perform well we do better when we Face them when we have video footage of them we just do a lot better when there's a lot more evidence out there and I think that's what happens with renell and with the six-man rotation he'll be able to have an extra day rest and I think these guys are going to be sharper down the stretch I I again I'm not I'm not worried and I'm not I'm not trying to be a homer I just I trust what this team has yeah and I know that um they addressed this after a game he say is not going to deny it they're a very good team I thought I was prepared I just didn't have a great game tonight and the spata said I think it would help Blanco I think it will help the entire staff they can all use that extra day so Spencer erti has been somebody that has thrived after struggling at the beginning Hunter Brown has done well after struggling so I think what we've seen is a lot of the pitchers kind of uh come into own ryell Blanco has been there the whole season he's carried the team the whole season now it's okay for somebody else to take the torch for a little bit while ryell Blanco is trying to figure things out guys thank you for making locked on Astros podcast your first listen every are you waiting for the Astros are hopefully about to go back to the playoffs they're hopefully going to go back to the ALCS for their ninth consecutive year I know I'm getting the cart in front of the horse whatever the phrase is but I'm excited about this team I know it's coming off of two losses but guys make us your first listen on Apple Odyssey Spotify wherever you're listening your podcast check out the lock on Astros podcast and go and check out my Conor with the locked on Astros postcast as well and we appreciate every one of y'all so Brett I know that you're looking at we were looking at the six-man rotation uh the Astros are going through a tough stretch right now you're gonna have um you're gonna have a whole bunch of good teams you have the Orioles then you have Phillies then you uh then you go on with some more great teams but uh it's you can't go into battle without one of your better players Kyle Tucker we'll talk about him a little bit later I know Dana Brown had some positive comments about Kyle Tucker we'll talk about that later but Alex bregman he made his return he hit a home run as a leadoff hitter and it was actually his I want to say it was his second hardest hit ball in his career first hard I heard it was his hardest hit his hardest hit home run but it's maybe no it's his second it's it his first hardest hit home run but his second hardest hit double was a double back in 2022 okay so so it was 10.1 miles per hour off the bat the one back in 2022 was 109.2 so it's good that you've been riding the pine you've been kind of icing your elbow then all of a sudden you come off and you're just like oh I can't wait to get out there I can't wait to get out there then you crush a home run like that and it's good to see somebody like Alex bregman Thrive like that it's good to see him get his first lead off home Ry and to make an instant impact to the lineup however where was the rest of the lineup yeah I was going to say Well it started good it's not how you started it's how you finish and they just didn't finish well I mean they had a golden opportunity you get you know even um Trey cabbage tried to contribute with the walk he's not even with the team anymore um we'll talk about Ben being gambl here in a second but um yeah this team just they just didn't do enough um but at the end of the day what are you going to do cry about it you know be upset no one's going to feel sorry for you no one's going to wait for you in the wings to Pat you on the back and say oh it's okay the bottom line is would you rather be the Mariners or the Astros ask yourself that Astros fans would you rather be the Mariners or the Rangers or the A's or the or the Angels or would you rather be the Astros because it seems like to me that some of y'all don't realize that this is the best team in this division so get off your like sappy depressed high horse and come along with us because we've got a World Series to go after and you may doubt this team that's fine but this team has enough this team once they get in the playoffs nobody nobody is gonna bet against this team in their right mind now we get to the National League we play the World Series as a American League rep you know representative yeah then it that's when that's when gets super super tough okay and it's not a guarantee but you're really telling me that some of y'all have more faith in the Mariners have y'all been watching baseball this year have you watched a single game I rest my case I I can't stand the oh my gosh it's like like what are we doing like we're picking first in the draft now because we're suddenly going to have the worst League a worst record than Chicago like quit being so freaking down on the AST they lost two games I just told you I just told you the Mariners since June 1st 32 and 36 sub 500 the best pitching staff in the league the Astros the most injured pitching staff in the league KY Tucker out 43 and 25 put that in your pipe and smoke it come on man quit being so negative I mean dude I just I can't stand it man Brett you better calm down because I don't want the Gremlins in your throat to kind of make the elbow grimlin I know I've got some Gremlins in my throat right now they're affecting my voice a little bit so I don't want the Gremlins oh wait oh wait that's what Alex bregman is saying is going on with his elbow so he is coming back but it's gonna be a little bit fluid with the him playing Third Base so we might be seeing a lot more Shay wiam and Mauricio duon playing Third Base uh but he said that there's uh some little gremlins in there causing some swelling that I'm just going to have to try and mitigate through the rest of the year nothing's physically wrong there's nothing structurally wrong it's just something that's there causing swelling so um he he did make some throw he did throw some the baseball a little bit today but I don't know when they're going to put him back in at third base I know Dana Brown said this morning there's a possibility that he could play Third Base at some point but I think they're just going to play it safe they rather have him for October playing Third Base than uh for August and September so what I think you'll see him do is play a little bit more DH what that means though is you're gonna have more of Alvarez in the Outfield and less of Jer Diaz as a DH and he'll be doing a lot more catching you are gonna have that but you're also gonna give witam Mor bats I want Whit to have Mort bats I I'm not I'm I'm not sold on to zzo right now being much of a help but Wickam I am Wickham the dude's got real pide power um he he has a good eye for the ball I think I think Wickham's a real deal I mean um I think even David City liked Wickham at one point so he must be doing something right yeah I think Wickam uh they both probably have a future with the Houston Astros I know rookies sometimes take a wild click uh Shay Wham has looked a little bit better at the plate I know I talked about yesterday how his ball got stuck in the uh actual the fence at the Bullpen so that has some the odds of that happening is very rare but uh bregman him being back in the lineup means a lot so I think the Astros will move everybody around to make this happen so before we start talking about really the going deep dive into the Scottland talk about the orial series we'll talk about what Dana Brown say about I said about the Cal Tucker possibly returning there is hope I saw a lot of people bad mouthing Chaz McCormick Jake Myers yeah guys there's help on the way his name is Ben gaml Trey cabbage was sent down to tripa he was optioned after uh today's game Ben gaml will be activated before uh and he will report and probably be in starting lineup for your Houston Astros so as a right fielder because he is a more of a natural right fielder than Chaz McCormack is any of the like most of the guys that we have are either center fielders or left fielders so they needed somebody that's more comfortable playing right field I mean I know most coaches would say anybody could play right field but you have to have that strong arm and so it's just something that the Astros felt like they can have the Astros are in this position because they a didn't expect KY Tucker to be out this long and they didn't um they didn't rein get reinforcements either at the trade deadline or at the uh during off seon they went ahead and went into storm with Chaz McCormack most of us would have done it same after the season he had last year where he was almost a big boy we thought he was gonna become an even bigger boy this year he's kind of fallen off a little bit nobody would seen this Jake Meyer season I know he's dropped off a little bit with the bat but he's still been okay uh but I think Ben gaml he hasn't done much but he is somebody that the Astros are could give a shot so Brett I do want to hear your thoughts about this in a second we are going to talk about what Dana Brown had to say about KY Tucker and then we'll talk a little bit more about this series against the Orioles and the Orioles are um having some late ending disasters so that might be a good thing for Houston Astros this episode is brought to you by suppos go to supply.com for all your plumbing hbac and electrical product needs look I know all about this stuff because my father hey guys thank you for making locked on Astros podcast your first listen every day whether it's on YouTube go and subscribe to us make us first listen on Apple Odyssey Spotify wherever you're listening podcast go and check us out and and uh become everyday or go and watch us on your Amazon Fire TV stick go and watch Ben gaml become the answer for the Houston Astros I am exaggerating here but the Astros have put themselves uh they've backed themselves against the wall they have no option uh Ben gaml is 32 years old he was a former top prospect with the Mariners like I said he he's and uh only what 23 at bats he batted 217 with Ops of 661 to his credit he had a Ops plus of 96 so it's slightly below average but at the same time uh he hasn't really done much his best season was his uh I didn't have this in front of me yesterday but his first full year was in 2017 when the Astros won a World Series but uh they he bat at 275 with 11 home runs 59 RB and 122 strikeouts but since then he has uh basically the highest is nine home runs and that was back in 2022 where he batted 232 so this is a guy that you don't really want the Astros to count on but he's just another option just in case he clicks just like the Astros did with Trey cavage so what are your thoughts about the Astros adding well you know he's a veteran um you know his best year clearly was his first year with Seattle back in 2017 um when he kind of hit the scene as a as a prospect but he is a veteran he has played in multiple ballparks he's played with multiple teams he comes to a lineup that's a veteran lineup you're going to need some help in the Outfield I mean why not um like you said I think he's a better option than cabbage I think he's a better option than Leon I think you know Singleton's his only position is first or DH and he's he's a bad off the bench at the moment um he's not replacing anybody um you're not going to let Chaz McCormick go Chaz is still there he's going to be there whether you like it or not um Jake Meyers has 13 outs above average I assume he wins a gold glove in the in the American League for center field because nobody has better defensive metrics than he does and he may have a noodle arm but he's got an amazing glove and he's he keeps you know if it wasn't for Jake Meyers uh the Red Sox could have blown a couple games open so um I think at the end of the day Ben gamble look it's a it's a low-risk high reward type of signing I mean it doesn't doesn't hurt you it can only help you I don't think he's going to get in and play like a majority and like we're going to have a Ben gamble bobblehead night or anything like that but he's there for his for his experience and again I go back to it I trust this team I I trust I trust the decisions they make because let's look at that Kikuchi trade and the three players now I tell you right now freaking will Wagner is actually hitting way better than Joey L profo right now he's hitting like four 20s something or something he's he's killing in his first seven games um but Kikuchi all four games he's pitched in the Astros have won he he's got two of those victories under his win column and if he's a guy that you end up signing long term he's a great guy to add Ben gaml I think it's a smart ad I think it's a good ad who knows I mean look when the Braves added jock Peterson and added Jorge Solair did all of y'all go oh the Braves are GNA win the World Series now nobody said that now I'm not saying Ben gaml is Jorge solir or Peterson right but you have guys like this to see how they in you you see like what they can do and he's a better option than a couple guys you've had up so why not give him a shot and someone asked me earlier what is the Astros record since Kyle Tucker got hurt well he went out on June 3D I gave you the June 1 record June 3 since June they're 42 and 24 guys they've been winning without Kyle Tucker if this team can win without Kyle Tucker if this team can win with the injuries and issues they've had and they've beat good teams why can't they still keep winning like why is it so hard for you to understand a club that has been a seven straight ALCS why can't they go back to an eth straight ALCS the Rangers sure as hell are one- hit wonders they're gone like V in the wind freaking Seattle Mariners are farting in the wind again they're not real contenders the only real contenders in the AOS and get in and if the Astros get their act together on the road and win several games you know what they could possibly be the number one seed in the American League and I said it that's right August 21st Wednesday 8:58 PM the Astros actually have a shot at winning best record in the American League put that in your pipe and smoke it yes um so you know those um gifs about the guy thinking about math and you see all the little different variables and equations going across that that was you trying to figure out that record and I was like what is he doing over there but I know that the Astros um a lot of us doubted Dana Brown at one point when he kept on saying oh this will happen this will happen and like he said the Kikuchi trade but he has gone out and said that Kyle Tucker I think he's a lot closer than we think so maybe maybe we will see him sooner than we think we we will so I think a lot of us are targeting mid September yeah mid September I think yeah yeah so maybe sooner maybe if Dana Brown decrees it it shall happen well didn't he say we're gonna go on a win streak didn't he say we were gonna turn it around and what do we all say okay like we we believed him and that's I am I was like man I don't know right maybe we have to miss to make it back and someone earlier said we need four or five losing Seasons to know what winning feels like again sorry he he definitely has a Rockets logo he I guess he's in that rocket season where they're not winning yet very much I love the Rockets but yeah that's a that's that's not a winning mentality Eric Eric I'm telling you making it to the playoffs is the toughest part I think the Astros will make it to the playoffs I don't see anybody supplanting them but look you have got to watch some other key teams in the race you got to watch the Royals you got to watch Cleveland you got to watch Minnesota those teams that are in front of you record-wise if you can creep up towards them win a game here they lose a game there before you know it we're within one or two games of the second seed or the first seed why the heck not because the Astros overall have been playing a lot better at home this year than they were last year and I don't know did you talk about it I was at the game after they had repainted the batter's eye it's now like almost like a black dark hunter green Hunter that's what they call basically they should have just painted it black I mean it is dark as heck man so anyways um you know I I like what we got it's gonna be a fun ride dude it it is going to be and I think out of our last few games I think we can win at least 23 games oh there's only like 27 games left or something how many games are there oh hold on was there 30 31 39 games left right no there's only like 33 games I thought 33 Okay well then okay 33 that's that's a few days ago so I don't know how I haven't looked to see what the give us 18 to 20 how about you figure that out real quick while I bring this up and I almost hate to bring this up because I know it's gonna extended podcast but uh Dana Brown was asked by Brian L Lima about de players that have been DFA and are you interested in bringing any of the players back uh not necessarily back but signing other players and so uh this is said uh Dana Brown basically said that they're interest they're looking at players that have been DFA and so the name the name Hector nerys didn't come up but this is a name that a lot of people have been throwing around why don't you bring Hector NYS back yeah and so I think that if that happens they don't want to do it via trade it would have to be he clears waivers and if you look at the just the stats he's eight and4 this season 3.89 ra he has 46 strikeouts and 44 Innings he has 17 saves but the whip is what jumps out to me it's 15 uh 150 sorry 1.52 three so here's the problem they had him in the wrong role he's not a closer right he's not he used to be he was when he was with Philadelphia he's not a closer anymore he's a middle two- ining guy why not you know what I'm taking Hector Aries over Ferguson every day that ends with why I I'm sorry Ferguson I know you've done better but I'm taking naries he knows the club the dude's got the kind of drive you need on the mound he's not scared of any opponent and I think if I think he wanted to stay and I think if he comes back you'll see a Resurgence of the hecton Aries we saw in the playoffs I think he could be a key factor sorry see you later Ferguson um King David said and king king's not bad but I would take nar's back why not yeah I know a lot of people and I mentioned it on yesterday's podcast Sean Dubin I know he came on podcast I know that um he's probably um he's I think he's more of a mop up player right now but if he wants somebody that could probably have an impact right now Force Whitley's having a heck of a a season now that he's come back from the injury and he's throwing hard he can come up and make an impact in the bullpen I know Kyle ort went on the paternity list so Seth Martinez was optioned when Verlander was brought up from the minor leagu and then yeah then he came back when Kyle ort was went on paternity list but I would really like for the Astros to just give another cup of coffee for Force Whitley what would it hurt I mean just give it a chance just to see what just for you you know what in giggles just to see I mean what if he is that X Factor in the playoffs and somebody that you can lean on and trust and I know that he's been a very he's been overly hyp Prospect with the Astros than injuries than the um the suspension but what if he is the difference for the Astros and you don't have to go out and get an NYS that's right um you know I like that um I've I've been team Whitley all season long and I think he can contribute you just wonder are they going to prioritize somebody else to come up and help them you don't know um but look man such a time as this September call up you get a guy in there look maybe they can get Whitley to do more than an inning maybe two innings and you come in if you have a Kikuchi go out in five and two3 you can bring in Forest Whitley and you know finish that sixth inning pitch that seventh inning and then you just have to do the eighth and Ninth you don't have to burn all three seven eight nine guys every single game I don't know how they would use him but he is he would be useful if I don't think he's stretched out I think he's one in at a time what I'm saying is if they do stretch him out while he's still in Triple A he could be one of those guys or he could get four outs or something like that so um at the end of the day you just need him to come in and basically get out there get some outs get some confidence and it could work um they're saying no Montero h no not Montero he got paid I mean if he's if he turns around down there I wouldn't mind it but he has to prove to a lot of people that he's ready and so that's a big task because he's disappointed a lot of people after the contract was signed so I think that kind reminds me of like anoli kind of what like you remember how anoli showed that great stuff in 2020 and then just he just never found that magic Montero found whatever it was in 2022 and contributed he just really has not found it since then so okay 37 more games okay so um Astros games Win Astros win 28 to 30 no okay I was I was thinking there were there were more games so if there's 37 games I think you can win at least why can't you win 17 of those games why can't you win you know what I'm saying why can you win 20 of those games why not yeah I mean so we we just have to see take it one game at a time don't worry about the series worry about that game Corbin Burns next pitcher you're facing brutal pitcher but gave up eights he's 12 and five with the 310 ra yes he sucks he well he gave up eight runs to the to the Red Sox recently so it's not like he's he's been at his best so hopefully we catch him on an off night and yordon Alvarez loves hitting home runs in in Camden Yard so that's and he has two home runs against Corbin Burns in his career with three rpis batting 400 and kartini has a home run so does dubon yeah Chaz McCormack and five of bats sorry in two of bats has a home run so ummi starting on starting tomorrow gamble you're gonna have to wait one more day to get your first start so hit for Chaz and hit a hit a hit a two-run two run home run or something like that right oh one more little note um I think we've talked about this but the Astros and the minime park will host the 2026 World Baseball Classic and uh that means uh Team Mexico team us a will be playing baseball in your backyard so to speak guys so it's a great way to go out and support your home country if you're from Mexico you're welcome to support them you're welcome to support uh Team USA that's the great part about the World Baseball Classic wherever you're from you can go support your team and still come back and root it for the Astros I wonder if we'll see anybody with the Mexico Jersey on one side and the USA Jersey on the other because we have a lot of people who maybe were bornn in Mexico and they've come here and they've become American citizens and they're and I have a lot of friends who are proud of both countries I mean I think that might be kind of cool but it's really neat that it's here at minute made Park here in Houston Eric I went to the World Baseball Classic with my son um we saw Israel play um the Dominican Republic that was an exciting game y'all have to go and so you know we'll see and then you you got other things like major league baseball players saying they want to play in the Olympics which is going to be I believe in the United States next time we have Summer Olympics so there's a lot of extracurricular baseball that these baseball players are wanting to play it's just to see um how many of these guys will do it and how that affect or how that will affect the seasons that they're played in well Justin Verlander returned Alex bregman returned he may not play Third Base a lot but he's back that's a great thing uh to see Verlander back on Mound great thing some positives from today's loss but the Astros hopefully the Dodgers go out and do us one more favor then we can go back to hating the Dodgers um that's all we got for this edition of the lock on Astros podcast my name is Eric Heisman he is Brett chansy and go ahead and make sure you subscribe to us make us your first listen on Apple odys Spotify wherever you listen your podcast go and check us out we'll see you tomorrow goess hey I was awake this time
