Justin Verlander problem or is this just a case of what can happen when you go up against one of the most dangerous lineups in baseball welcome in everybody we are going to talk about the Sunday Night identified yes the Astros and the Diamondbacks as two teams that could make it to the World Series and we are going to see when all is said and done the Houston Asos grabbing two of these games so we will talk more about that we will talk about the New York Mets are they a team of Destiny I'll tell you why there's a lot going on here when you start peeling back the layers Yankees are back in first place the Orioles struggle over the weekend against the Rays struggle to score runs the Cubs seem to have cooled off and are the Dodgers dangerous again believe they are and I will tell you why again specifically the situation with Justin Verlander is getting kind of interesting because this Astros team has a lot of options for that rotation and what do you do with the trusted proven veteran Justin Verlander as we go through the rest of September I think I know what you do with him for the rest of September you keep throwing him out there but what do you do with him when you get into the postseason that is where we will talk about it but he got hit and hit hard today three Innings eight runs allowed giving up home runs to pavin Smith who had a special day but in the end pavin Smith is not a home run hitter Justin Verlander we cannot be giving up home runs to pavin Smith Astros fans I really want to know how you feel how does H is it it's it's one of those things where you just take the good with the bad Jose Altuve comes up in the eighth inning with the Bas is loaded and what's he swinging at what are you doing even if you're guessing you got to know I can't swing at this anyway I digress this game really there's not a whole lot to break down from the game in the moments because it's a 12 to five game this was more about the Arizona Diamondbacks the Arizona Diamondbacks improving to 31 and 16 since the All-Star break 80 and 64 and it's important that Arizona keeps winning games because the Mets keep winning games because that comfortable spacing that we thought was there isn't there anymore with the Mets nine game winning streak and we'll talk about the Mets in a moment the Arizona Diamondbacks now only are a game up on the Braves and the Mets and between the Dbacks the Braves and the Mets only two of them can make it so Arizona's got to win games in the end this week plays out to be a three in three week they got two out of three from San Francisco good job you only get one but at least you get the one because you cannot put yourself in a position this team is good enough 80 and 64 the way they've been playing this is why you got to start out this is why May June July matter because if the Arizona Diamondbacks who have been one of the best teams in baseball since the All-Star break 31- 16 if we were to scratch everything out and start things fresh and it's what your record is after the All-Star break if that's what got you in the Arizona Diamondbacks would be one of the top seeds in the National League but that's not how it works because we can't forget what you did in May and June and July so this is why early matters because the Arizona Diamondbacks even though they've been great are going to be in a fight for the next couple of weeks because the Mets are hot and the Braves are going to hang around the Braves are not going to fall off and again of the three of you only two can make it in Arizona Diamondbacks three and seven over their last 10 so there has been a little bit of a cooling so the Dbacks need to get it going and the way this series started with Brandon fought really didn't look that impressive on Friday and the bats were nonexistent the Arizona bats on Friday were non-existent and on Saturday e-rod look you're going to score runs but if your starter is going to go out there and give up a bunch of runs early then you're in trouble and then Dylan floro came in and gave up a ton of runs tonight you got something good from Ryan Nelson and when you put up 12 you're going to win nine times out of 10 but you got to keep winning games and as far as the Astros go with their scenario they'll be 77 and 66 once this game is officially in the books which has them in the uh West with St Louis or Not St Louis St Louis losing today to Seattle we're going to have a 4 and a half game lead which is comfortable which is comfortable I'm not saying that Houston need to worry about the West more so thinking about down the road because framber Valdez you want to get a test for framber Valdez how good is he and he goes out there and he's the reason why the highest scoring offense in baseball doesn't do anything when he's the reason why you have something really special and you already knew that it was just more confirmation of that on Friday and then on Saturday you say Kikuchi he's going to give you a chance to win every single timeout you have those two you you're putting ronell Blanco in the bullpen what do you do with Justin Verlander his last three starts he's made four since he's come back the Boston start was fine uh it wasn't wasn't great it was fine you'll take it but you see these last three times out now four runs against Philly five runs against Cincinnati eight runs against Arizona he walked a ton of guys against the Cincinnati Reds could he even get into the fifth inning what do you do are we at a point where for the Astros and Justin Verlander you got to finish the month strong for us to trust you to throw you out there look at the way things are going depending on what happens and how Cleveland plays the rest of the way which we have some concerns there but let's focus on Houston for a minute the Astros will be playing in the first round does Justin Verlander start either of those games I can't imagine it right how do you start just unless again this is where we're at Verlander is going to have to give him three really good starts between now and the end of the month to earn the ball in that first round because that's what they're looking at right now that is exactly what they would be facing they would be the number three seed Cleveland's got a better record by three and a half games the Yankees have a better record by four and a half games still time for them to earn their way out of that first round and get a buy but if they end up in that first round I don't think you can start Justin Verlander unless he gives you three really good starts the rest of the way now is it a problem truly not really the only problem is that you're going to have somebody with the stature of Jus a Verlander that you say we got it buddy go hang out over there we love you but we got this cuz you're going to go with Valdez and you're going to go with brown if you are in that first round as it is you're looking at framber Valdez and the game has just gone final 12 to6 is the final you've got Valdez takes the ball in game one Hunter Brown takes the ball in game two if you have a third game I still don't think you're red Verlander you're at Kikuchi or Blanco and now maybe Blanco stays in the bullpen but you're still probably going to go you say Kikuchi in game three and then you're going to think about who's the best option for a fourth man in that rotation or is it smarter wiser better to just spin this thing back around and put Valdez back out there you go Valdez you go Brown you go Kikuchi and then you swing it back would you rather have Valdez maybe on one day rest depending on how the days have lined up and that than Verlander than arti who isn't really proven in the postseason and same with Blanco Blanco may be better out of the bullpen it's going to be interesting to see how they sort of work Verlander with what he's got look um this is probably the end for Verlander in Houston in my opinion he there there's no shot that he's going to reach the Innings to lock in that player option and there will be no reason for him to be back in Houston next year you're going to have Valdez you're going to have brown you're going to have Blanco you're going to have arag Getti you're going to have mccullers's working his way back Garcia working his way back maybe you want to resign Kikuchi because he's pitched really well for you when you gave up three good prospects for him you don't want it to look like you gave those three up for a guy who was only going to be there for two months so it's probably it for Verlander in Houston I cannot see him returning and there's a good relationship between him and the cranes and that front office but at the end of the day this is it's it's simply one of those it's a business decision it's not personal it's business so Verlander today getting rocked I don't think with the rotation that the Houston Astros have they can honestly put him out there in a post as in a postseason start unless they are stretched to the limits you're looking at a situation where you're dealing with injuries maybe again Verlander has three really good starts between now and October again he can earn his way back but just an interesting storyline I got to think it's going to come up in Houston sports radio those of you that listen to Houston Sports Talk I got to think it's going to come up what do you do with Verlander if this is the Justin Verlander when you come around to October it it's just it's odd the thought of Verlander not being out there but maybe we're getting to that point this man wants to pitch until he's how old might not get there father time will decide for you Verlander did not look good tonight got absolutely destroyed again as the Arizona Diamondbacks the top offense in Major League Baseball did their work youo Suarez four hits tonight another home run he's been a man on a mission pavin Smith was a two-run homer away from the Home Run Cycle and it was so cool that he even got the opportunity that he came up in the what was it the sixth or seventh in it was a sixth inning came up in the sixth inning maybe the seventh inning with Suarez on after he got a hit man I wish he would have done it I don't I don't know if we'll ever see a home run cycle at the major league level I think there's been one in the miners uh I don't think we've ever seen it at the major league level it would have been cool it would have been cool it would have been cool for a guy for pavin Smith to have done it because pavin Smith is not a home run hitter and would be the ultimate trivia question because hate to say it but when when pavin Smith when it's his time to hang up the cleats and walk out the clubhouse and not return Heaven Smith's name will be forgotten uh but if he had the Home Run Cycle he could live on a legend but uh that would have been cool it's cool that even again even got the opportunity to to do it so we have the Diamondbacks doing their work improving to 80 and 64 and again the Houston Astros down to 77 and 66 Diamondbacks getting a win that they need because they have to keep and up winning uh let's see big business thank you for the Destiny status for the New York Mets the New York Mets team that did not do an overwhelming splashy Big Time overhaul spending spree of an offseason the trade deadline was what I expected and what I what I was hoping for that team add some pieces nothing of consequence was given up I like what they did at the deadline and here we are now 7865 again pushing the Arizona Diamond back Arizona Diamondbacks have to keep winning games because the Mets are here the Mets have crashed the party that the Padre's Braves and Diamondbacks were at thinking it was just the three of them and the Mets kicked the door down and said what's up [ __ ] they are 28 and 19 since the allstar break the lost to the Reds today was their first l pites yes thank again thank you for the donation big bidness they had a niname winning streak rolling into that Series against the Cincinnati Reds and it's not like the niname winning streak was against the Rockies the Marlins and the white socks they took two from Arizona they took they did take three from the white sock okay that did happen they took three from Boston Boston who has since bounced back and has back above 500 the Reds they took two the first two from the Reds and remember the Reds were playing some pretty good baseball the way the week started out for the Cincinnati Reds they swept the Houston Astros this Reds team swept the Astros to start the week and then they went to Queens and almost got swept by the Mets so it's not a joke of a Red's team amazing moment on Friday for Mark entos with the two two run home runs one in the first inning one in extras to walk it off canana got the win on Saturday today seino was good but the bats could not get going only four hits but let's dig back into this whole team of Destiny thing so really outside of May is they've been they've been a good baseball team may they went 9 and9 if you could erase that and just make it a 500 month because every month the rest of the way and even April they've they've been above 500 so if you if may could have at least been a 500 14 and 14 we may be looking at the Mets in a whole different perspective we would have been looking at them heading into the trade deadline a whole different perspective I mean they're not top five in many categor ories but they're top 10 in baseball in a lot of the categories statistical categories hitting and pitching um but this is where this okay so here's what I'm talking about Pete Alonzo is on track to hit the fewest home runs in a season for him and driving less than a 100 runs and for the first time in his career Pete Lonzo the Big Bopper on that team is at risk of finishing with an Ops below 800 Brett batty proved that he was useless Starling Marte has hurt the team more than he helps go look at his batting base running and Fielding run values it's all below League average for Starling Marte Brandon nmo and Jeff mcneel mcneel who's now done for the year tracking for the worst offensive seasons of their career mcneel being done now will be one of his if not his worst offensive season but the Mets team keeps winning you've got Lindor putting together a season that if Otani was still in the American League Lindor would probably be the MVP Mark ventos has proven everybody wrong including a lot of Mets fans a lot of Mets fans that did not believe in Mark ventos thought Mark Vientos could not hit Major League fast balls Mark Vientos is a spark on this team love to see it love it love to see somebody prove the doubters wrong Jesse Winker was a great addition at the trade deadline Harris Bader's defense I hope Harrison Bader I'm trying to think who should rival him I know there are one or two Harrison Bader will at least be a finalist for a gold glove and I believe the way things have been going maybe he should win the gold glove in the National League for center field and the pitching David Peterson guys David Peterson who until a couple of months ago any Mets fan at any point over the last couple of years would have been thrilled to see David Peterson move on David Peterson since the allstar break is 5-1 with the 247 ER and he's nine And1 on the year David Peterson Shawn maniah is having his best year since 2018 Luis srino again good today they did not get a win but he gave them a chance to win the best we've seen him since 2018 we're talking about it's 2024 6 years we have not seen Shawn Mani or Luis Saito pitch this well there is no kodai senga right and this is actually going to be a blessing in disguise not having kodai senga this year because now he's not going to be able to opt out go look at his contract go look at his contract I think it was 400 Innings if he reached 400 innings in his first three seasons he could opt out he's not going to reach 400 innings so he cannot opt out anymore so this is a blessing in disguise they are finishing they will finish above 500 they have a serious shot to make the postseason they're going to be a problem how far can they go again that's where we have to ask the destiny Gods how much how much uh fairy dust magic dust whatever you want to call it do the New York Mets have because they just keep doing it and we're seeing guys that haven't done it in a while step up the pitching has been really good uh with that starting rotation and they're doing it against the odds no kodai senga the best pitcher in that rotation not there you've got again Alonzo's power numbers are down you've got Brandon nimos hitting numbers are down Brett batty that turned out to be a bust maybe Brett batty still has a future but H not this year Brett batty does not have a 2024 in them so the New York Mets that's all I wanted to do I wanted to pose the question are they the team of Destiny because think about these other teams that are around the Atlanta Braves are getting crushed with injuries the Arizona Diamondbacks finally have it going but I don't feel any Destiny stuff with the Diamondbacks I don't feel any Destiny stuff with the Padres or the Dodgers or any other team in the National League New York Mets might be a team of Destiny it's going to be a lot of fun I'm not going to change my Outlook I still believe that if this Mets team does grab a wild card spot that they are at best they can get into the second round and then it would come to an end it would come to an end when they face the number one or the number two team in the national league and they are going to face one of those teams what is it next weekend I believe it is next weekend we've got Metson Phillies right yep they're going to Philadelphia for the weekend so a big test coming up for the New York Mets but that is been um it's fun it's fun good for them so Mets are they a team of Destiny let's get into the New York Yankees because here come the Yankees back back in first place taking care of the Chicago Cubs the Cubs with a sluggish week just put it that way the Chicago Cubs dropping two out of three to the Pittsburgh Pirates that can't happen and then they get one against the New York Yankees the Cubs did not score an earned run in this series they were shut out on Friday they were shut out on Saturday and then today it was in the first inning they put up two runs on Garrett Cole aided by a glabber Torres error and there you go but what are we getting out of this we get two out of three against the Cubs we get Luis heel back we get Clark Schmidt back Clark Schmidt went forward 2/3 four hits no runs Luis heel six Innings one hit no runs maybe they figured out the back of the bullpen Weaver goes out there and gets the save on Friday not homes the New York Yankees are back in first place they got KC and they have Boston this week coming up how are you feeling if you are a Yankee fan the pitching is going to be the Catalyst here and when Garr look Garrett Cole still went out there and gave you a great start the first inning could have gotten could have unraveled and been even worse but the first they he gave you a chance to win today Clark Schmidt being back if he's going to go out there and help cool off a Cubs team that's been playing some good baseball and then Nester Cortez who's not happy about moving to the bullpen but that's going to play out the way it's going to play out uh look you got suck it up you got to go out there and play you may be unhappy that you went to you're being moved to the bullpen but that's something you can vocalize with your manager and with your front office you got other guys in that Clubhouse you're going to keep delivering for so the fact that Nester Cortez is not happy to be moved to the bullpen doesn't bother me that much doesn't give me only games out of the wild card I know Jordan they're hanging around they are hanging around there are teams that are uh what do we want to call it objects are closer than they appear the Minnesota Twins are screwing up the Minnesota Twins are in trouble I don't I don't we we we can dig into it a little bit we I'm thinking I'll dig into the twins a little bit more tomorrow for power rankings but the twins are screwing up giving the and really opening up the door for the Detroit Tigers and the Seattle Mariners to try to stay alive even Boston Boston's one game above 500 but because the twins go out there and get swept over the weekend even Boston's still It Anyway you've got a yankee team Nester CZ I'm not worried about that he's going to go out there and Pitch as well as he can because he's doing it for his teammates he can be frustrated with the front office frustrated with the manager but he's going to go out there and do his job for his teammates so I'm not too worried about that so if you've got heel you've got Clark Schmidt you've got Garrett Cole you got Carlos rodon you've got Marcus strowman all of a sudden this Yankee rotation starts looking better you figure out the back of that Bullpen look they've got options I don't feel like they have closers but they've got options you can throw Weaver in there Weaver has given you quiet comfortable Innings this year can he do it in the ninth regularly will they rotate other arms in as Boon sees fit how many Yankee fans are confident in Boon making the right decisions there but you've got things happening that give you some optimism again the Cubs in three games did not score an earned run against the New York Yankees in Chicago would have been tough been tough being a a Cubs fan going to the series with the Yankees coming to town and you can't score belly had the only hit on Friday was it so the Yankees are back and first and the Baltimore Orioles are in a tough spot right now because look the schedule gods have smiled down on the Baltimore Orioles but man this orial team bats falling silent the Orioles against Tampa losing two to nothing today losing 7even to one on Saturday and on Friday they won but they won two to nothing the bats the bats can't sputter out right now the pitching is not good enough Zack effin who had won every start since coming to Baltimore that streak stopped on Saturday Burns gave him a chance today but again just not able to score runs if Burns and the bullpen holds the other team to two Baltimore you have to win that game 10 times out of 10 cannot lose that game now the fact that the Yankees are back in first place by half half game at this point with this much time left is not that significant it's disappointing you wake up tomorrow and you're going to see the Yankees ahead of you and you're the standings if you're a orial fan but the the fact is this the Yankees feel like they're going in this Direction with the rotation coming back together getting heel and Schmid back this week and the Orioles feel like they're going in this direction don't feel confident about the Orioles rotation the bats cooling off for the orol that's when you fire all the alarms the bells and the whistles go off the flags go up that's when you start worrying is if those bats cool down they took two out of three from the white socks took two out of three from Colorado but over the last two weeks going up against should we call it a good team are we going to call Tampa a good team a Tampa's competitive the Dodgers are good they lost both of those Series so things need to happen and they lost the Series to the Mets the week before you can't feel great about things in Baltimore right now 24 and 24 since the allar break the whole reason I bring this up is you want to win the division you want to win the division not just to win the division and you get to put a pening up but you want to avoid the first round you don't want to play in the first round if you are the Baltimore Orioles and you are the number one wild card team at this point I believe you would be going up you would either take on Kansas City or you would take on Minnesota the Minnesota matchup would be fine the Kansas City match up with Kansas City's pitching I don't know I don't know and if you're going up against Minnesota still you got if you're G to have to face Pablo Lopez get out of that first round win the division Aris thank you for the eight months on the Platinum Club my Royals came up big sweeping the twins big series with the Yanks this week yes it is yes it is yeah that was the I feel like the Royals really needed that too it it was just kind of feeling like it was getting a little out of control for Kansas City so a good sort of gaug reset with this series sweep against the twins dropping two out of three to Cleveland didn't like that after getting swept by the Houston Astros so it was sort of like uhoh no not not now we can't have this and the sweeping Minnesota is a statement that everything's fine everyone relax we're good don't worry but if you're Minnesota on the other hand Minnesota four game set against the Rays they split it then you dropped all three to Kansas City you don't like that and now you've got the Tigers and the Mariners three and a half back that's Striking Distance man three and a half games can be erased in a week if you're playing like the twins are playing right now next up let's talk about the Dodgers the Dodgers feels like they are dangerous again this Dodger team and by the way this whole Otani it's going to happen the 50/50 season what are we three four home runs I think we're four home runs away so we have the Dodgers dangerous again sh Otani doing his thing taking two out of three from the Cleveland Guardians and it was Matthew Boyd of everybody that's there that is that that could do damage it was Matthew Boyd on Friday that shut down the Dodgers they had an opportunity against gatis in in the eighth inning got the bases loaded but could not come through but we still saw there were still in losses are there small victories and for the Dodgers on Friday despite the loss to Cleveland there was and what was that small victory it was Landon Knack Landon Knack returned on Friday when six Innings gave up two runs on three hits and struck out eight and that's why I believe the Dodgers are dangerous again not just landed Knack but the return of the pitching Yamamoto will be returning on Tuesday and there is enough of a Runway here to ramp him up for October that's going to be huge getting him ready don't overuse him don't feel like you got to go out there and throw him they wouldn't do it anyway some organizations might the Dodgers are not they will get Yamamoto e back and ready so that he's ramped up and ready to go when October rolls around so you have him returning on Tuesday glass now's throwing we don't know exactly when he will be back but we know he's throwing so he's working his way back you get landed Knack back on Friday and he pitches six strong against the playoff caliber team a team that might be the number two seed in the American League in October I'm feeling good especially when you have Jack flare go out there today and put up zeros against Cleveland Jack flarity has been so good since coming to the Dodgers the pitching is really the element here that is taking me to a place where I'm the Dodgers feel like they're the Dodgers again and what I mean by that is when they're on your schedule for the majority of this season the Dodgers came to town and you didn't worry because either somebody was hurt or multiple somebody's were hurt or they weren't playing their best baseball it wasn't that team that was going to just steamroll the entire league that wasn't the Dodgers I kind of feel like we're starting to get to that point with the Dodgers since that Phillies series about a month ago they lost that series two out of three in La they have not lost the Series since that's 10 no nine nine nine Series 2 4 68 nine that's nine Series wins in a row for the Dodgers that was Pittsburgh well okay hold on let me let me fact check myself they split with Milwaukee so it's not a loss it's not a win eight of the nine series the Dodgers have won since they lost that series to Philly they swept Pittsburgh they took two out of three from St Louis they swept Seattle they took two out of three from Tampa two out of three from Baltimore three out of four from Arizona okay here's another split they split with the angels so seven of the nine they haven't lost the Series can we I just get back to that they haven't lost the Series since the Phillies five four or five weeks ago and again they took two out of three from Cleveland so you just feel like the Dodgers are getting things back and what has happened in that time Muki bets came back max M came back you're getting Yamamoto back back still don't feel great about berer or Miller but I know what they can be at the end of the day when you get into October we talked about this with the Houston rotation you don't need five or six guys in your rotation you need three three solid arms that you can trust that's what you need and if the Dodgers have that with Yamamoto and glass now and flarity boom boom boom they'll be fine and I have a pretty good feeling that it won't just be those three if you feel good about throwing Landon Knack out there if you get Tyler glass now back um there's there's reason to be optimistic because these bats this lineup is going to do their thing bets and Otani have been great over this stretch since that Phillies series Roos and Lux have been doing it they've been getting solic contributions there and all of this is happening while Freddy and Tay Oscar are not really doing Freddy and Tay Oscar things I think we have a couple of home runs from Tay Oscar a couple of home runs from Freddy not Freddy hasn't really been scorching hot uh over that stretch so they're playing really good and they're not even firing on all cylinders right now pen has been really good Michael copc was one of the steals of the trade deadline Phillips brazer vessia uh trying have all been good Banda outside of a couple of outings over the last few weeks he could be Kershaw is going to be similar to verland where you're going to need to get him back get some starts in he's going into a walking boot for those looking for a Kershaw update uh that is from a couple of days ago that he was going to have to go into a walking boot so don't know what the regular season situation is but here's the thing the Dodgers it's in Clayton Kershaw's hands they gave him a player option for next season they did with Clayton Kershaw now he's got all sorts of escalators I believe it's like $4 million and then but if you make so many starts or uh as so many innings he can get that thing can climb up to a decent amount I think it can Peak at like 14 or 156 million so the ball will be in Clayton Kershaw's hands and I got a feeling he will be back yes you got the 3,000 strikeout Milestone um not going to get there this year especially going into that walking boot but does Kershaw have a role with this team in October and I think I don't want I don't want to rule it out I don't want to count it out waboo you saying Kershaw needs to come out of the bullpen to stay healthy if Kershaw was good and Kershaw came out of the bullpen for October that'd be one thing if he's coming back next year it's the start here's the here's the issue for the 2025 season for Kershaw and if he's starting where where what what spot it is Otani he's going to be starting next year it is Otani and Yamamoto and glastal the top three in that rotation I guess you give Kershaw the opportunity just because he's Clayton Kershaw but you you gotta you got to think Bobby Miller will play a role next year in that rotation Landon Knack could play a role in that rotation next year Michael Grove could play a role in that rotation there's so many options and Clayton Kershaw I don't think he would go out of the bullpen I mean that's where the Dodgers organization uh would would truly if Clayton Kershaw's back I at least early in the year they probably have Clayton Kershaw out there and a guy that may be more deserving of a spot in the rotation like Knack or Grove coming out of the bullpen because they can and out of respect to Clayton Kershaw who's given everything to that organization don't don't you wish that I mean it isn't it isn't it kind of refreshing I I I feel I feel like this Dodgers team would do him right all the all the times when the players get done dirty they would do Kershaw right uh arus thank you good point yes exactly they are going to go after Sasaki now we don't know if Roki is going to be available this offseason it may be the following off season and that would actually from a timing perspective work out a lot better for the Dodgers don't think they have a say in that but but uh that is definitely that would definitely play out
