REACTION: Taysom Hill.. TAKING HANDOFFS?! | Saints 49ers Preseason Week 2

Saints lose to the San Francisco 49ers in week two of the pre-season but I'm not really worried about the loss what I'm focused on is that beautiful drive by Derek C company Trevor Penning blocking TM Hill off the [Music] handoff what's going on baby it's your boy Grunt and welcome to the immediate post game following the Saints versus the 49ers but I'm going to be be honest with you we finally saw some momentum at least I saw some momentum some direction at least the offense look put together they look like they knew what they were doing on at least one drive out there and even though that may not be a whole lot Saints fans it's a lot right now sometimes our expectations are betrayed by the Numbers especially given a situation in the state of the roster given the situation with injuries at wide receiver and given the situation with the offensive line the Saints start the game out on defense they come out and look Brock party looks cozy in the pocket he gets a nice little pass over the secondary but before they can even get to Midfield they forc a fourth down beautiful Run Stop and Play from alante Taylor and DeMarco Jackson got to think this is a New Orleans defense that ranked 22nd against the run last season so to see young guys like Alon Taylor and DeMarco Jackson step up and this is DeMarco Jackson's first season technically right he had an injury during his rookie year he didn't play a single snap snap in the regular season so here we're seeing him really For the First Time In Action so to see him compliment each other to see the real chemistry together to lock down the run of the outside love to see it first offensive snap for the Saints you're going to see a handoff to Tamm Hill we're so used to seeing TM Hill kind of in that quarterback SL Wildcat position direct snap from the center but to see him come through in a fullback halfback type of roll we hear about it we saw about it in Camp but to really see it come to translation was awesome Eric McCoy continuing to get better and better continuing to be a pillar for the Saints offensive line and he made an example of it right there again with tames Hill and he'll do it again throughout the rest of this game but especially on this very first burst from taes Hill look people said off the snap maybe he's too big to to really get a burst of energy off a handoff but my man look like he could handle it just fine takes the football immediate burst up the gut offensive line does their job and they continue to keep trucking Saints don't do anything with the football though 49ers get it back and on Third and long Brock py tries to evade the pocket but he gets chased down by none other than Carl Granderson and wham bam thank you Cam doing what he does best and they chase Brock py and they force him to run to the sidelines forcing a punt first half of the saint second Drive of the game Jamal Williams gets a nice little burst gain for about five yards Jamal Williams is going to eat the rest of this game against the 49ers which you love to see baby but after that in my opinion this was quite predictable they bring ta some Hill in they line him up for another snap right not a direct snap but another handoff play right at fullback halfback whatever in my opinion quite predictable they hand it off to him though on second and five I get what they're trying to do they're trying to soften up that front seven which they're eventually GNA do a little bit here and there but not here as soon as Derek Carr snaps the ball hands it off to Tamm Hill and it's like he runs into a brick wall forcing a third and seven and right here Derek Carr in my opinion Has Cedric Wilson open maybe not wide open but he definitely has a window I think even the announcers said you know he's got to make that throw to where Cedric Wilson is the only person that can make the catch he was a little bit late on the trigger and also a little bit behind him we're going to see Derek Carr make a few inaccurate throws but this one really hurt you're talking about third and seven you can really get a drive going here they're going to put the starters back out there for a third Drive which I'm pumped for but right here I think if he gets that pass you're going to see that flow kickoff right there versus having to wait to see it into that third Drive Niners get the ball back again Saints defense does their job again and holds Brock per and Company to a punt and guess who we see stop of the Run Chas young and Willie Gay Jr two key additions the Saints made to that front seven once again this is a Saints defense that ranked 22nd against the run last year 22nd they got too many good names on that on that roster in that on that defense to rank 22nd in anything uh especially against the run so hopefully Chase young Willie gay Brian bie who once again this week steps up in a big way stat defense going and it starts and it ends with that front seven and it starts and it ends with guys like Brian PR in his second year at of Clipson withn another week of being illegal they can work together to really fill some of those gaps because the offense is going to need all the help they can get I don't know who's putting the football for of San Francisco 49ers but this man's been eating his weedies cuz right here he's get to nailed the Saints within their own five again but this is the drive but the Saints are going to go 16 plays on 8 minutes and get a touch down they start to drive off huge completion of FAL Maro to get him away from the end zone 10 yard gain to get him a little bit separation from there Jamal Williams gets his first big run of the game and this is this is what I mean though like not only did he get a lot of yards but he just looked like a freight train he just look like he did with the Detroit Lions almost better I mean because you know in the Detroit Lions there was a lot of goal you know and goal situations a lot of usage in the Red Zone the Detroit Lions had a you know still do have a very impressive offensive line so he had that as you know as a weapon but here I mean just straight off the handoff this man just moves before anybody can even really catch him gets a huge gain and from there we're going to see their car tie up with Crystal LA and once again I think he M I think he was behind him I think I hate the nitpick but I do think if he hits Crystal LA on target gets a little bit more ahead of him Crystal La is going to be able to kind of turn that corner and get at least at least another 15 20 yards and in all honesty I don't even know he might have gotten a lot more than 15 to 20 yards if Derek Carr would have hit him a little bit earlier and gave him a little bit more of a lead pass um you know out but they're going to keep working those Kinks out it is nice to see them at least tie up and connect but we definitely to see him because this is the second week in a row where I feel like they've they've really clashed but the more passes we'll see the better and that's why I'm so grateful to see him get three drives here I'll give a shout out to this offensive line including Trevor Penning this entire drive all the way up until maybe that Jamal Williams tackle I think it was might might have been Mims but they got tied up for a huge loss because that's going to force a fourth and five fourth and short might have been less than that but a fourth and short situation like I said this is a long drive but Derek Carr is going to connect when it matters most going to hit up fifth round rookie out of Pittsburgh bub means and that's cool just because I know B me had an injury and once again we talking about a very injury played wide receiver room right now our intense focus on recovery and assisting the injured they going to March down fourth in inches and he you going to give it to taste some time beautiful block and taste some Hill showing why he can be so useful once again in that fullback halfback position and get six who that 49ers going to drive down to the Red Zone but will be held to a field goal thanks once again to this Stellar Saints defense this 2024 Saints defense has every been of talent to go Toe to Toe with the best but definitely a huge shout out to rayan Wright this is his second year I believe he was with the Carolina Panthers the Raiders and now he's with the Saints he went to Oregon State same school as our brand new left tackle Tois fuaga there's a couple plays he got beat on but right here he made a huge tackle on Third and long to force the field goal and then later on every time he gets beat he makes up for it so I just wanted to give a definitely a a player Spotlight to Rajan Wright Saints are going to get the ball back with just under seven minutes left in the half Spencer Rattlers also going to be checking into the game but on second and eight his second snap of the game Spencer Rattler is going to Fumble it off a snap and they're going to go to the replay and sure enough they're going to show four 49ers ball after a fumble recovery definitely a rookie mistake from Spencer Rattler it looked like he didn't even really it look he thought maybe he was down he seemed to get complacent rookie mistake from a fifth round rookie that's what you're going to get this is where you want to see these Kings worked out but the 49ers is going to get the ball bag in great field position and what do you think they're going to do with it and they scored big time but only three could have been six but that defense is just built different unit coming in to definitely help out they boy Spencer Rattler not allowing a turnover to results in too much bleeding here difficult situation if you're Spencer Rattler I say again just a rookie mistake I think he takes the snap definitely gets hit hard he kind of loses the football and he doesn't know how to react maybe he freezes for a minute because he thinks he's down it's all good and then as we can see there it's that's was not the case and Company will get an opportunity to score before the half but they're not GNA can't get a drve the together and then the 49ers get the ball back and Joshua the rocket scientist dobs is going to channel the ghost to Steve Young I guess and just have an insane Drive runs all over the field and puts him right in score position with like less than 20 seconds left in the half I say's defense though they still trying to show that grit They still hang tough they're going to force a fourth and goal situation with 5 seconds left in the half but Josh would die Hobs comes through off the NCAA 14 cuz this is looks like old school this they look like the college football 25 all right it's little old school beautiful beautiful read option keeps it tucks it runs Jordan Howen in his second season who we are all praying is going to work out especially with Justin Simmons going to the Atlanta uh but not here uh man so Josh Dives keeps the ball off the option for goal on like the three yard line it's one onone Jordan Howen Josh dobs and and dobs is going to just hit a nasty nasty Juke and how's going to miss he's going to whiff on the tackle and dos is going to just walk into the end zone Stadium gets hyped it was a great play uh from dos but man if you're Howen you definitely want that one back you got to be as a quarterback at the end of the day dobs is a great athlete he's phenomenal one of the best I think one of the best role players one of the best backup quarterbacks for sure in the league but right there if you're if you want to be a stting safety in this league and you're talking about fourth and goal head into the half 5 seconds left one-on-one you got to make that tackle and then Spencer Rattler is going to start off the second half of the Saints they're able to get into field goal range Blake groupy who has looked impressive in Camp he's been nailing all his kicks when given the opportunity so far in preseason and he keeps that promise alive again here nailing a 52 y in the fourth quarter the 49ers are able to get down to the Red Zone and get a field goal of their own the score is now 16 49ers Saints 10 and the Saints are going to get the ball back with Jake Hanner in the game Jake Hanner had a few good throws and I feel him and Spencer Rattler both look pretty good on the run if there's something I got to give them both a thumbs up for but unfortunately it's not going to be enough for Jay gner he'll make a few good throws uh he also connected with Austin a couple times but they get down to the Red Zone fourth down a minute some change left game on the line and Jak hner delivers what I think is a decent pass but it's just not going to it's just not going to connect it's not going to work out it just is what it is game over 49ers are going to end up winning it 16-1 the Saints will not score a touchdown after that tesm hill tutty but we have a few things to be optimistic about first thing I'm going to start with is is that Saints defense it's something I think we're going to be able to say good things about every single week I hope that's the case KN on wood but especially the front seven Chase Young Brian prie getting pressure to Josh dos getting pressure to Brock pie last week he hits the Spin A Rooney and this week he just is he's just able to be so quick you see Willie gay alante Taylor DeMarco Jackson just a few of these guys the depth that you really need to see to make sure the Saints don't once again finish outside the top 20 for the for run defense and I think this is finally the most complete Saints unit and I'm being honest with you now on paper this may be the most complete and deepest Saints defensive unit I have ever seen as a 28-year-old Saints fan but I am concerned about Jordan Howen that safety position I'm I'm a little bit concerned about there maybe Jordan Howen and I have faith Jordan Howen will put it all together I know that front seven going to be nasty and then we bring in or on top of that today he finishes with seven total tackles so we got Rose too and rice we got some depth man we got some depth in that locker room I'm excited about this Saints defense the offensive side of the ball quarterbacks finish Derek car goes 7 for9 47 yards Spencer Rattler's going to go four for eight for 27 yards and then Jake Hanner is going to go 7even for 13 for 76 yards Jamal Williams is going to lead in average yards per carry with 6.4 yards five rushes for 32 yards and if you look at Jamal Williams stats last season I know it's preseason but still just look at film look at on paper he just looks more alive he's always been a great personality but I think there's just there's just an extra bit of juice and once we get chimra rolled out there too that that might just be very well be a nasty Saints backfield and if they can get the Run game opened up which they could and you got Tamm Hill off the fullback like we saw today that's gonna open up the pass game we just need Derek Carr to throw it on time throw it early enough and throw it accurately alive and at Perry had a few drops I do like how they're trying to get at Perry heavily involved here in the preseason to just find a really good role for him I think he'll be very useful in the Red Zone he'll be definitely be useful on some of these deep outside plays outside routes excuse me as long as Derek Carr can you know learn to connect with him he had about six Target I believe he had two receptions B memes two receptions off two Targets and then you also had Mason Taylor who's a rookie undrafted and he had I think three receptions about 30 yards on three targets so he had some new faces some new names that maybe a lot of people hadn't really heard or seen before in that wide receiver room which is the perfect time for this to happen uh because we need depth I'm curious if they're going to use TM Hill in the receiving game at all I know preseason they're not showing their hand they just had him out there today though in the back field last season he was definitely used heavily as a receiver sometimes as a tight end I think even in Madden right now he's listed as a tight end he didn't line up in tight end in one snap today unless he was blocking he might have been out there at tight end a few times blocking but I mainly saw him at fullback so I'll be curious to see how they maybe involve him in the wide receiver game moving forward and then Cedric Wilson he had one reception today for five yards I know he can be a deep threat I know that he's got crazy good speed and I know what he's done in the past like when he went and played for uh you know for the Miami Dolphins he had a few good Splash plays I just want to see maybe some more usage out of him as we head into this final game in a preseason I think this could be a very deep backfield though Jamal Williams James Robinson Mims Alvin Cima I think it will be down to between Mims and James Robinson and Kendra Miller I think between those three to really identify rb3 I think you got Alvin C and Jamal Williams and then you got to have a third guy maybe a fourth on reserve but it'll be interesting to see which one of those guys leads the pack as we head into this final game of the preseason and as we probably see ev C start to take a step back hopefully working towards that contract solution and hopefully all gas no breaks into September it's so early to tell you know but it just is so good to see some type of Direction it's good to at least see one really solid drive from the starters third fourth quarter you're going to hope for some things but there's only so much you can do you want to see some momentum from the starters that's what I was most concerned about last week and this week starters Trevor Penning included the offensive line they had a few meltdowns there's a couple run plays that got stopped short there's a couple drives that didn't impress me but they at least got that third drive to go 95 yards 16 plays again solid Drive let's just see that all the time and I also once again want to see Derek Car connect more accurately on these throws but maybe it's a pre season
