into the race on Saturday June 29th 2024 at 5 a.m. the western states 100 started Jim Walmsley went straight to the front of the race with about 20 Runners right behind him as he went up the escarpment at the lion Ridge aid station at about 10 mi into the race Jim Walmsley came into the Aid Station first with about 15 Runners right behind him and some even passing him on the way out of the Aid Station Katie shy held on to Aid Stations the men's front pack up the escarment and was just 4 minutes into the Aid Station behind Jim Walmsley she was leading the women's Race by about 5 minutes and already ahead of Courtney de Walter's time from the year previous which is the current course record second into the Aid Station was Emily hogood about 5 minutes back and Heather Jackson was just about 3 minutes behind her at the Duncan Canyon aid station at about mile 24 Jim Wellsley bounded into the Aid Station shirtless followed by Hayden Hawks Dan Jones and Rod favard just 3 minutes behind Jim for the women Katie shy came into the Aid Station first and was in and out of the Aid Station in just 10 seconds followed by Emily hogood 13 minutes behind Katie and Eda neelon 5 minutes behind her at the Robinson flat aid station about 50k into the race or 30 miles Jim Walmsley came into the Aid Station first with Hayden and Dan Jones just 1 minute and 30 seconds behind JY Katie flew through this aid station top 20 overall followed by Emily 20 minutes behind her 50k into the race and Katie Michigan Bluff already had a 20-minute lead mile 43 the last chance aid station Jim Hayden and Dan were all within one minute of each other and Katie came into the Aid Station about 30 minutes under Courtney de Walter's course record from the previous year then at Michigan Bluff about 55 miles into the race which is one of the biggest Aid stations in Western States Jim came in 2 minutes ahead of Rod favard followed by Dakota Jones about 1 minute behind him halfway through the race and it could literally have been anyone's race it was the hottest part of the day at about 1 p.m. and the race was just getting started Katie shy came into the Aid Station about 30 minutes behind the men's lead pack not even stopping at the Aid Station to take a break and literally changing her pack on On The Run the second place woman Esther klog came in about 39 minutes behind Katie shy at the Forest Hill aid station at 62 mi into the race so 100K Jim Walmsley was still leading the race but with Rod Hot on his heels with Rod leaving the Aid Station Forest Hills before Jim so Rod had just taken the lead of Western States 100 100 K into the race Katy shy came into Forest Hills still well under the course record pace and this is when fua entered the race she was still about 43 minutes behind Katie shy at this point but her and Lyn Chen were about a minute apart now we're hopping over to the river crossing at River Crossing Mile 78 of the Race Rod favard hit the water first with Jim Walmsley right on his tail between the 100K Mark and the 78 mile Mark him and Jim had been leapfrogging back and forth Rod taking the lead sometimes Jim taking the lead others it was just back and forth all the way through up until the river when rod and Jim entered the river at the same time that's right rod and Jim were in the river at the same time this hadn't happened since the iconic 2010 filming of Unbreakable when Killian jouret and Anton krup pichka were in the same boat crossing the river together 8 minutes later Hayden Hawks was in the river and pushing hard Katie got to the river still well in the lead with fio 37 minutes behind her and fuia was actually fighting for her life at this River Crossing as she accidentally let go of the rope and was floating down the river she had to have people go help her back to the rope pull her back against the current it was scary looking then at the Point of Rocks pointed rocks aid station 94 miles into the race inbounded in Jim Walmsley basically securing his win at the Western stats Rod was 11 minutes behind Jim and still fading quickly with Hayden hawks just 5 minutes behind Rod at this point it was now a Sprint finish for second place Place Katie was in 32 minutes ahead of fuia on her way to claim her Victory 100 miles into the Mens Podium western states 100 2024 Jim womsley broke the tape in a time of 14 hours 13 minutes and 45 seconds just missing his own course record that he set back in 2019 by 4 minutes minutes then the race for second was on it was literally a Sprint finish on the track between rod favard and Hayden Hawks Rod favard ended up just edging out Hayden Hawks by one 100 m at the end of a 100m race he won by just 100 m it was it was amazing to watch such amazing footage amazing just trail running is the best sport in the world Rod finished in a time of 1424 and 14 seconds with Hayden finishing 16 seconds behind him literally if the race was just 100 m longer Hayden could have beat Rod it would it was just crazy to watch so that is the men's Podium Jim rod and Hayden and now I'm just going to quickly go through the men men's top 10 we got Dan Jones in fourth Caleb Olen in fifth John Alin in sixth Tyler Green in seventh joshen Shen in eighth Jonathan Ray in ninth and Chris Meyers in 10 for Womens Podium the women's race Katie shy literally led the entire day from start to finish wire to wire she won in a time of 15 hours 46 minutes and 57 seconds just 17 minutes behind Courtney de Walter's course record from last year she also got a personal best from her race last year by over an hour she shaved an hour off from one year to the next just incredible fusa came in second place with a time of 16 hours and 20 minutes becoming the third fastest woman to ever face finish the race and about 22 minutes behind her was Esther klog which rounded out the women's Podium the rest of the top 10 on the women's side are Emily hogood in fourth yingi casperson in fifth
