Dattitude (270): Forecasting Saints depth charts - Rattler or Haener?

Introduction [Music] pre-season is over so let the guessing begin we won't bury the lead so the topic this morning obviously has to be Rattler versus Hanner have my thoughts changed what about Trevor Penning has he done anything to instill confidence a better question might be does he even have a legitimate Challenger and if not what does that say about the state of the offensive line what about some other big decisions kicker punter the back end of the wide receiver room how about this we'll talk about whatever you want to talk about this morning and you can even tell me how wrong or maybe even a little right you think I am judging by the Twitter world I'm an idiot but we'll get to that oh and it's Monday so I'm waiting to see what Gabe Henderson has up his sleeve maybe I have something and we'll finish the show with a look ahead to two aame taking on southeastern and the Tigers of of LSU open up their 2024 campaign in s City against the USC Trojans we're gonna have a lot of fun you quarterback battle whoever I think it is I'm G to tell you who I think it is not who I think maybe not even who I think it should be let tell you who I think it is and why we're gonna play Clips this morning you're gonna hear from Dennis Allen you're gonna hear from Spencer Rattler you're gonna hear from Jake Kaner you're gonna hear from uh Samson n what a play that was that was I don't care what anyone says in fact um my friends at Fox8 last night the player of the game don't get me wrong Rattler's throw was great the touch the first touchdown pass it was fantastic it was it was the maybe the best pass of the preseason season but the play of the game and I don't care that it didn't end in a touchdown was Samson NOA and his response to the whole thing is hilarious he had you probably didn't see it on you saw some things from Rattler last night I don't know that anybody even showed Hanner I don't I didn't watch them all but Rocky says Manic Monday maybe we're getting there we're getting closer we're gonna find one I'm telling you I want it to be unique Jerry says it's oh he's talking about Rocky uh but he's also saying ratat Tad it's a r it's a ratty Monday M ratty M no that doesn't work I don't know I will tell you this before we get to the the meat and bones and the meat and potatoes of this show it was a rough weekend for the dairy household y'all know it wasn't here Friday it was 5050 wether W going to be it's a good thing that I didn't uh come on um but uh all of you there were more than a few sent me well wites for my wife um she had a procedure done Friday that it wasn't supposed to be that big of a deal but it turned out to be a big deal she had complications and uh had to have surgery Friday evening was in the hospital overnight and so it was a rough weekend but she's home she's better um she's Rec recuperating in about 20t away from me through a wall um and uh yeah so it's it's better here I was end up I did end up able to go to the game uh yesterday and boy there was some fun comments wo people did not like what I had to say and I wasn't even that bad I'm G tell you what I said in a minute Big Sean said Rattler won the battle but Hanner has won DA's heart that's an interesting take thank you Rocky for the prayers um that's an interesting take picture I know who you you were here a couple Mondays ago and I know who you like and look I respect everyone's opinion see that's the that's the funny thing about not just it's not just football it's like everything politics it's why I never say anything about politics social media ever ever because people whatever side you're on the other side they're attacking you y [ __ ] thank you atown for the prayers as well um it but it's the same with sports I don't mind it in sports as much because I don't know it's different doesn't really and the grand scheme of things doesn't really mean anything I mean it's it's a football game thank you Jerry for the prayers as well thank all of you for the prayers um so when we get into this Rattler heer debate just remember their opinions I respect your opinion and it doesn't offend me if you like Spencer Rattler or you like Jake Kanner or you hate Derek Carr or you think someone else should be here or you don't like Dennis Allen and whatever if we disagree which I'm not saying we disagree on the things that I just talked about but if we disagree it's no big deal we can agree to disagree right that's what this show is about we talk and that's what Monday is you guys are working helping me find a name for the Monday show when it's just me and you mono imano or it's actually mono a mano I got corrected it's mono a mono so we'll come up with something you guys can help feel free to type in if you want whatever you want to say you say as cutdowns go that's not going to happen they're both going to make this team who's going to get cut who's gonna be the big surprise of cut down day are there going to be any big surprises usually there are but I don't know I think the it's going to be interesting to see what this team does with Kendra Miller is Kendra Miller gonna go on IR they just gonna say you know what we're done is Isaiah fosy gonna make this team I didn't I didn't put a a clip from Allen but he did talk about fosy and I will say this it doesn't sound good for him now personally I I hated to pick from the get-go and I haven't seen anything that leads me to believe that he can make it I mean why what what makes anyone think that Isaiah fos is gonna contribute to this team all right this is the closest one yet Saints fan Ren mono a Monday I like it that is by far the best one I've heard yet I think I like it mono e you know what because we don't have to be correct we could say e even though it's technically mono aano I like mono e Monday we're gonna work on that that we're real close that's the closest one yet cut down day again does anybody have any surprises they think people are talking about at Perry I think he did enough yesterday to make this team and I don't think there's enough behind him it's kind of the same way I feel about Han and Rattler I'm not sure that again we're going to get in all the Rattler thing give me like three minutes we got like three minutes before we get in actually gab's coming home maybe it's like five minutes but I feel the same way about at Perry I don't know or Trevor Penning even we're gonna talk about Trevor Penning this afternoon oh this morning did Trevor Penning sucks I look I'm sorry I that's I don't mean to say it as mean as I said it but he's not good I W I watched came home and rewatched the game at least the plays with Penning in it and he was worse this week than he was against the ners but that being said I don't know I don't know what the what the solution is I don't know if there's anyone better Linda says she's gonna give me a chance all right Linda do me a favor if you decide it's not for you like if you're going to click off if you stay tell me at the end you stay it all the way through if you click off and you say this isn't for me let me know tell me why I'm GNA show it on the screen Rocky Man versus Mondays I like that too by by the start of the regular season we will have a name for this what Monday is it's coming I promise all right give me it real quickly let me let me uh tell you about our friends real quick before we get into the the meat of the show cuz that's happening I know we're already 13 minutes in but uh me to the show's coming some people say Rattler some say Haner you know who you never have to guess Evangel andse securities.com okay before we get into the Rattler versus Hanner debate because that might be half the show I don't know I might run out of time it might be more than half the show again clips from Allen because I think it's very important remember how I always tell you Dennis Allen doesn't necessarily tell you straight up what's going on he likes to kind of tell you through the lines or whatever he he had an interesting comment that I definitely took note of and then I I like the way both Rattler and Haner uh responded in their postgame press conferences it is interesting it is worth noting that Rattler was sent to the podium and the Hana press conference was in the locker room that is most definitely worth I'm not gonna tell you I'm not gonna I'm not gonna be one of these guys who if I felt one way and I'm going to stick on and I'm stubborn even if I think I'm right no I'm going to present it to you as neutral as possible I'm still going to give you my opinion but I'm going to I'm going to tell you as neutral as possible I'm gonna show both sides all right let's get to uh I want to bring in it's Mondays with Gabe if you're new to the show we have on Mondays and Wednesdays we bring in our producer Gabe Henderson who always has who who tries to stump me but before he does or like come up with something new or something I didn't know or whatever Monday with Gabe Sur he's going to surprise me I got something for you Gabe up in my phone there was something on Instagram this week not that I spend a whole lot of time on Instagram because I don't but there was this post that I think is hilarious the Bears uh this year's Hard Knocks there is a zero cursing policy because the masy family they don't use profanity and by God we live in 2024 and no one curses on a football field so get off my lawn and stop cursing anyone who's ever played football or even been around a high school sideline knows that there are high school High School coaches get more creative than you could ever imagine I can only imagine what NFL coaches say and do zero cursing policy how could even enforc that you're suspend we don't even enforce that on this show yeah goddamn right we don't I me I mean how can you even do that that's not it's not possible in football anyway I just thought that was funny and uh it goes to show the Bears you know people complain about the say I think I don't remember which show it was it was a couple weeks ago we're talking about with Larry holder who would you rather be would you rather and I know you disagreed with some of them but some of these teams out there you think it's so bad for the Saints I mean sure that we've had a couple of average seasons and we used to winning and Drew Brees is gone and he's never coming back and Shawn Payton's with another team and they're going to stink by the way but so I know things are not what you're used to here and that they they could very well be bad this year they could be good and we'll all be surprised but one thing I know is there are definitely other teams in the NFL that I wouldn't want to be I would take the Saints over at least 18 and I'm being kind when I say eight there's at least eight teams I would rather be the Saints right now and I'm talking about long-term future than these other teams so it could be worth the Bears a one I know people love Dro that's crazy oh you could drool over Caleb Williams they're still the Bears they're the Bears they suck they're the bear other than 1985 they suck but they're trying to here's the difference they're trying to do something about it what not curse no come on come on don't get me started we'll go on for an hour about this okay he's fun but guess what his stats aren't very good either all they show on ESPN and everywhere else and all you're seeing unless you're watching a full Bears game by the way are the Great Clips this is why Caleb Williams is gonna be awesome well guess what in the regular season when people are watching the Red Zone Channel or maybe they're even flipping over between games or whatever when he it's on prime time he's still a 55% passer it's not gonna the Bears are going to bear just like the Falcons are going to Falcon in the long run whatever anyway what you got that's enough rant so well I I've got a few things but the other things have to do with the Saints so I I'll before we transition into the Hanner verse Rattler I I'll talk about this uh just a bit of betting advice you know anyone who knows me knows I'm a writer for bet. NOA and I give out betting advice a lot of the time yeah and and you will on Thursday yeah I will my one tip for this week is if you like LSU against USC especially if you're playing the spread wait we've seen it in the last eight days we've seen the spread go from LSU 6 and A2 to LSU minus 4 and a half and earlier it was teetering on LSU 4 and a half going to even money at some books which means it could pop down to four I think you'll get a better value I saw some USC fan speculating on Twitter that oh if this keeps up it'll go to USC Plus two and a half it it won't it won't it won't get down it's not go below three and a half it won't I I don't think it'll go down below three and a half I think that's exactly right but if the Publican sharp money keeps coming in on USC I think we could see it get down to three and a half and that's when it'll Hammer back up that is the moment you pull the trigger on your LSU pets I don't know that it's going to go lower than it is now but you have a point I don't think it's going to go that much higher but a lot of times what you'll see is you'll see uh the sharps sit there and wait yeah and they will bet so it may get back up to five and a half or so but it probably won't happen until Sunday so yeah I uh you you've got to keep an eye on it if it goes down I I don't think it will like you just said if it goes down to three and a half Sharps will be all over that even the ones who bet USC at six and a half they'll be all over LSU well that's a good lead into Pro promo our beginning this week we have no Wednesday show this week by the way it's not because anything uh anybody's ill or anything like that like Friday was um no Wednesday show because I am prepping to get all my stuff ready for the regular season so we go in a full regular season mode next week and I as I say that we're taking Labor day off because it's a holiday but um we go in a full regular season mode next week but really we kind of started this week Thursday we'll have our first uh we're gonna have a betting show on Thursday so it's I will have a a short monologue and we will talk Saints and and stuff like that a little bit whatever the news of the day is I'll bring it up for the most part Thursday is just going to be whatever Our Best Bets are so that's what Gabe's leading into it'll be Gabe Tom casali our beta.com uh editor he will have his pick Best Bets of the week and then uncle bignick is Gonna Come on with me every week for a segment as he has done the first three years of their show so looking forward to it got some comments in the Stream want to get to him in just a second Gabe I know you got to lead into Saints stuff what you got well yeah so I do one thing I I do want to add ask is that before you take me off I I want to get to Saints fan Ren's comment I I we we are we are not uh instituting a no cursing policy but out of fear of not or out of fear of saying something that I would regret I'm not going to curse like I want to when looking at this comment this let let me read it because a lot of people remember we we have we have over a thousand people who listen to the show after the fact on on audio pod and don't know what we're talking about so it says I think we have the best defensive coordinator in the game uh as our coach and the best offensive coordinator in the game in kubak just need a head coach and demote Allen because the defense has been Supreme since he's been in New Orleans go ahead tell the Matt Hatter I said hello next time you're in Wonderland all right we're not going to be mean to a to a no what what world are we living in let's demote Allen because because the defense has been good but yeah the next time that you see a head coach accept the demotion yeah well that's the thing but not only that Clint is the best offensive coordinator in the game he may may end up being the best it's not even been one regular season game what are we doing here we're getting our hopes up which is okay it's okay it's August 26 it's okay to get hopes up that's why I was always happy oh by the way before you before you go and F by the way um big sea also says that you're making good points at least the Bears are trying to do something about it yeah that's that's the when I say that I would take these other teams over the Saints I just you know as as a Texans fan I watched my team tear it down because they couldn't compete and they were stuck in nine and seven but they weren't stuck for long though the entire Bill O'Brien era was was that was a mistake and maybe we'll look back but as a fan of a team who's who witnessed uh their franchise Kick the Can down the road I just don't think the Saints are in a promising place I don't think they they can maybe win the division I personally don't think so I don't think they can compete for anything real um my friend actually put it put it uh nicely the the other day he said any team who is debating starting Spencer Rattler over their starting quarterback is not going to compete for anything yeah I don't think anyone's debating so I just think I I just think the the cap situation although they make it work every year you're you're not going to compete realistically with that cap um you could with Drew Brees but not not now and I just don't think that that's why um as a justification I would take those other teams but one one question before I go okay uh why is everyone so interested in this quarterback 2 battle and I know a lot of people I I I I don't see it with LSU I do I do have an idea because there are so many people out there and I'm not blasting the people for this I understand why they feel this way Big Sean I know you're one of them um people hate Derek Carr they think Derek Carr is never gonna win you anything okay that is the reason why they think Rattler brings some form of Hope and he's different Jake Kanner isn't different because in the grand scheme of things he's kind of I think people perceive him to be this this dropback old school quarterback when I don't think that's what he is really um I'm going to get into some of my my talk about there Big Sean I knew you gonna say something can't compete with for anything with Carr or with da at had coach either is that I mean that there there's your answer but there are thousands and I don't mean this in a bad way there are thousands of big sha out there in the world who in Saints World Our Little World the world that we live in who hate Derek Carr and the reason why they hate Derek Carr isn't because of anything that he did last year because he was again I don't know how many times I have to say that this by every single metric you want to look at almost with yards touchdown passer rating Saints offensive play Passing numbers per per play or per game or per attempt or what ever it is he's between 11th and 14th in almost every single metric which means he's better than average he was better than half of the NFL last season but people still want to hate on him why because he's not number nine Drew Brees is gone and he's never coming back that's that's why they don't like DK Carr it they're just not gonna like anyone because he has no he had a bad offensive line this year and he's gon to get killed this year and they'll blame it on him again I here's the thing the devil you know is better than the devil you don't so Derek Carr is undoubtedly in my mind better than Spencer Rattler um we always talk about it you know late round draft pick quarterbacks are a unicorns in the NFL yeah there's only two now two starting quarterbacks Brock pie and Gardner mchu you're not going to really win anything with Gardner mchu and Brock py has the most talented roster in the league correct but then and and I this is one reason I don't get the Rattler hype I really don't I not only do I not care about who the Saints number two quarterback is um I just don't get the Rattler hype I think he's good I think he's a good young player I don't think he will ever do anything of note in the NFL really um I'll leave you with this people can talk about preseason performances all they want from rler do you know who the highest graded quarterback was last preseason Jim last preseason I would have zero clue Malik Willis people people love to talk about love to talk about preseason performance with Rattler graded highest graded quarterback last preseason was Kenny picket there you go where's he now he's a number two quarterback now yes he is and not even in his hometown where they drafted he got his chance as number one and he was awful yeah well I hear you uh we'll have more to talk about as we go along Mondays and Wednesdays with Gabe and then again Thursdays uh he'll he'll give me his best beted uh Gabe Henderson I appreciate it I'm with you for the most SP but let's get to some of these comments and we got some clips to do thank you sir yes sir yeah we've got we got to move on because we got uh we got Defending Derek Carr there's plenty of Clips I want to play and there's lots of comments that have been in the uh the queue and that I didn't have time to get to uh thank you David bordelon good morning to you um let's see Chris Kennedy go Tigers who out all the way see I love it I want optimism I'm just I'm telling you the way that I think it is it's not what I want it to be just because I think they stink or whatever it's not what I'm rooting for him to be I do say this Big Sean I'm actually surprised you're saying that you think car should be the starter solely based on experience over the other two but as far as upside Rattler has more than the other two I don't think Rattler has more upside than Carr I really don't I think I think car with a decent offensive line if car car is and I don't know how many times I need to say this people don't care they don't want to listen they don't want to hear it if you don't believe something or you hate something this much you just won't listen but Carr has never had a good good offensive line ever literally it's his ninth or 10th year in the league and I know this because I've done research on it I did it before last year the best offensive line rating from PFF that car has ever had in his entire career is 20th and it was the year that the Raiders went to the playoffs and they almost I think it was the Bengals that they almost beat who then went on to the Super Bowl in the Wild Card round I'm just saying David says Carr is the present 23 well that was last year 24 and he's intrigued by Rattler's potential development understand that he means 24 255 I gotta um all right let's get into my thoughts real quick uh because then I'm look this is what I think I have anyone has watched the show more than once knows that I think Hanner will be the number two again I go back to gab's point about why does it even matter that much because before I even get to it it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme things because if Carr gets hurt and is gone for any extended period of time this team is a in a world of [ __ ] sorry that's the best way you know I'm Sorry Miss mcy that's where they are because they're gonna it's going gonna go down the tubes and I will agree with a lot of my colleagues who have said this that I think if you're talking about if he's going to be gone first of all if he's going to be gone like he gets hurt in week three and he's be gone the rest of the year the Saints are going to scour waiver wire for a veteran they're going to beg Teddy Bridgewater to come back out of retirement or something along those lines not necessarily Teddy Bridgewater but someone of that ilk they're not gonna want to throw Spencer rler or Jay Kane to the Wolves they just Jake Haener vs. Spencer Rattler don't want to do that I think that they think that both of these quarterbacks have a chance to be their future that's the way I believe that's the way I perceive it so if you think that you're not going to want to just throw one of them to the Wolves now that being said if you're talking about where I agree with my colleagues and some rational fans is that I think that if you're talking about a game or two or the rest of a half or whatever I don't think there's any question that Jay Kaner is more ready to go into a football game right now than Spencer Rattler and if you don't believe that you're just not you're just not seeing what's real I agree with you that Spencer Rattler has more upside than Jay Kaner in the long run but I don't think it's nearly as far apart as you think it is what does Spencer Rattler do so far that you've seen that is that much better than Jay Kaner he's got a stronger arm yeah but it's not by that much I do agree that he has a stronger arm but it's not by nearly as much I I keep using my 26 year old son as a reference point because he's kind of he's not kind of he's on the same train and same boat and hates me for saying it gets all gets all pissed off when I I can't even give my opinion he gets pissed off why why don't you want to hear what I had to say tell you what I am going to do before we get into it further I said I got clips and there's a clip that I definitely want to play because I've been telling you about Dennis Allen and reading through the tea leaves maybe his mind was changed a little bit yesterday and there's one key point in this thing when he talks about what Hanner did yesterday and what Rattler did yesterday and he use and I think this is important so I don't I always try to read too much into things I know that I'm a Virgo my birthday's Thursday by the way I'm a Virgo and that's what Virgos do they read too much into things but he says he calls Hanner by his last name and he calls Rattler Spencer does that mean anything I don't know look at this and then tell me what you think I'd say over the last you know week to 10 days I feel like Hanner took a real big step forward um in practice um I don't think we we saw as much of that in in the game now what are the reasons why you know whether it be routes or protections or misreads or whatever the case may be I think we go back and we look at the tape and evaluate where that was um I thought Spencer you know did some nice things today I thought he looked you know calm poised made some good throws was a B to extend some plays with his feet um get some first downs you know by tucking and running so uh yeah I felt good about you know and feel good about the quarterback room I thought that was an interesting way that he put that I don't know that his mind Chang because I can tell you that there's zero doubt in my mind that at least going into Yesterday zero doubt in my mind that Hanner was his number his pick for number two and you know I also read some comments from people who um they they think that um that Allen's going to make if it's if it's Rattler he's gonna make the wrong choice because it's Dennis Allen making the wrong choice I mean if it's haer excuse me what if he picks Rattler you're not gonna give him any credit then what about kubak you think kubak has any say so Big Sean in practice where no one aims to take the quarter I didn't hear any of you pe you know last Monday we had a lot fewer comments because Rattler sucked in preseason game number two I didn't hear any there was no Rattler Haner debate it's funny how we had Rattler haer debate after pre-season game one and we're having Rattler haer debate here in preseason game number three but no one said anything up game two Zack Dunham car has had the most offensive coordinators than anyone in the league consistency is key absolutely Zach you're right let's look at the yesterday and I there is one in particular and I talked about it a little bit before this's one in particular I'm gonna just call him the Fanboy podcast if you're a fanboy of the New Orleans Saints and you don't like rational talk then there are definitely other podcasts out there for you but there was one who is a very prominent member of the New Orleans Saints media going absolutely goo goo gaga over Spencer Rattler what from yesterday and this is a real answer if you don't if you think I'm off base tell me B look I get the point total there and I put it up there for a reason I want to show that I that I'm objective I mean I'm trying to be Spencer Rattler was 7 of 13 for 105 yards Hanner was eight of 17 for 87 yards the stats those stats alone aren't that much different the big difference is that Rattler they scored 24 points on his drives and they only scored three under Hanner now I will say this in haer's defense Hanner had a touchdown pass called back uh by a holding call and then he also had at Perry if he can keep that foot in um before the end of the first quarter that's a drive that's going to turn into points if that's a first down there's zero question that's going to be points so he had at a bare minimum 10 points taken away from him now that being said Hanner still scored 24 points the pass he threw to ecmia St Brown for the touchdown and in the first half was the best pass of of the preseason by anyone there's no doubt about it I'm that was the best pass of the preseason but does that mean that because he complet he completed seven of his passes what about seven passes make you think they ran the ball much more efficiently under Spencer Rattler than they did for Jay Kaner how many touchdowns were made via the ground game how about Jacob kabot nobody's talking about him nobody's saying he should beat out Alvin Camara he rushed for two touchdowns yesterday it doesn't matter preseason in the grand scheme with think doesn't matter so and the argument for this debate on why I think Kaner should be number two is because if if car goes down then they need someone to step in and keep this team's hopes up Rattler is not ready does that mean Rattler won't will be sitting here next year and if it's still Hanner and Rattler back there that I won't change my mind I might change my mind because I will tell I feel differently about Spencer Rattler today than I did when they drafted him when they drafted him I I sat here on this show and said I thought it was a waste of a draft pick now I'm not sure that it's not still a waste of a draft pick because I don't think any of us know whether the Spencer Rattler will ever start in the NFL and it won't be the Saints fault if he doesn't because if he doesn't here he'll get a chance somewhere else so then some other coach is stupid too I guess maybe he will maybe he won't but that being said I don't necessarily think it's a wasted pick anymore I definitely think it's a worth of project I certainly think he's made the 53 man roster and deserves at some point a chance to become number two or maybe even if Derek Carr has gone after this year which I doubt have a chance to be number one if Carr's gone after this year again which I doubt but if he is I would love to see a full-fledged Allon quarterback competition between whether it be Rattler and Hanner or and some other veteran or whatever it is a Town's got a good point he asked me if I think Rattler will put butts in the seats if God forbid cars goes down yeah for a game that's what I think I don't think he's ready so what I think would happen is I look what worries me a lot about young guys and we saw that Patrick Mahomes didn't even play until his second season what worries me most about throwing rookies to the wolves and I don't know Spencer rer so maybe it wouldn't be a problem if it happened to him but if you throw him to the Wolves if Carr gets hurt and you throw him to the wolves and he stinks how how much does it affect his confidence in the long run does it make it so it's untenable I don't know here's what he had to say I will say this again he's growing on me I loved his press conference yesterday I like what he did yesterday I defin def think he's better than this little bit of time in what I've seen I think he's done better than I expected him to do so I will say that much and I really like this press conference they threw him out there on the podium he stood out there for quite a bit and he certainly doesn't lack for confidence you know I I just put my best foot forward you know wanted to come out here and play well play clean protect the ball and and and Lead our lead our team to to scores um you know I'm controlling what I can you know that's not up to me to decide but you know just putting my best foot forward still a rookie still learning um you know definitely want a few plays back from today just on a couple underthrown balls but um you know I feel like I've taken steps where I need to and obviously not anywhere near where I want to be so continuing to strive for Perfection every day I would never say I'm not confident I'm always confident you know but um again I'm going to sit in my role do what I need to do and keep learning and getting better yeah just develop as much as I can you know learn from the guys in the room obviously it starts with Derek he's our guy um great player um so staying in his ear you know working with him and Jake and our coaches and just continuing to improve every day and get closer and closer with the team no I mean I I think this is a you know awesome situation to be behind somebody like Derek I mean he's a great guy again a great vet who's proven in this league you know I was in a situation similar at Oklahoma when Jaylen Herz was the starter so very comfortable learning as much as I can and and trying to help get guys better yeah I mean fan base is awesome here obviously um kind of reminds me of South Carolina you know just loving fan base not the biggest Market but they they die for their players which is an awesome feeling you know I try my best to stay out the way you know social media and all the buzz and all that stuff so I just I work here you know I'm new I'm a rookie I'm just trying to first up while the Saints beat writers are getting quotes and doing whatever and they come on the show so Zack Ying the Saints editor was asking me my thoughts on it I at no point did I say I think Spencer Rattler sucks or that Jay Kaner is great or anything it goes to prove that no one wants to listen if they don't agree with you here are the comments and again you go watch it and see what I said it's it's still on there basically what I said was I don't think Spencer rler did anything yesterday that takes away from Jake Kaner came in in this whole thing being number two it was his job to lose in my opinion and I also believe in the opinion of Dennis Allen I don't know that he hasn't told me that but just what I see and what I've read and what I've heard it was Jay Canon's job to lose and I don't think Spencer rler has done anything to make me feel differently now that being said that's what I said on the show yesterday I don't think he did it I don't think he did anything yesterday that changed my opinion so these are some three here are just three of the comments from me there's tons of them and I got Twitter hate all over the place here are three of the comments today Jim is a little Moody today we get it you hate preseason I do hate preseason by the way someone I didn't even get this until Gabe had to look this up and I think this is some kind of I don't know it's it's from Rick James I I don't I don't even know what this means I haven't seen someone hater on a player like this since Buck Nasty did SOI Johnson maybe it's funny I don't know Dave CH is it Dave Chappelle reference I don't know uh I'm old I don't get it but I wasn't hating on them as the point and then the last one my wife actually got kind of pissed when I read this to her somebody said cocaine is one hell of a drug this guy clearly took a few lines before this show second quarterback job is Rattlers to lose Derry is a sore loser and a hater shake my head um okay that's my point why do I have to be on cocaine because you disagree with me again you look at the stats on the screen you've seen the entire preseason even if you think Rattler is has more upside and has been more fun to watch you can't honestly say that he's been better he hasn't been better he hasn't been worse I don't think but he has been better been better Rocky says that dude is a wacko taking up for me I appreciate it this is a good point Sean I this really is H Hanner is another Andy Dalton you won't win or lose a game you know what that's that might be that I think that's a fair assessment I'm not saying I necessarily agree with you but I think that's a fair point my whole point is I just don't get why everyone besides the fact that he's not ter car and he does look a little bit different but if you look at the footwork I don't think Rattler was getting out of the pocket any better than Hanner was I don't think he was running any in fact I've actually been kind of disappointed with how slow I think Rattler is I think Rattler has been I expected him to be kind of like and I didn't watch enough of him in college I guess I watched a little bit but not as much as some others did Tracy welcome to the show Tracy valer uh whoever gets a job of a sport when they do well and fuss when they're not playing their best game absolutely so will I although I'm not supposed to cheer in the Press Box so I'll if it's a home game I won't be saying much probably in My Den I will be when they're on the road um Rocky says with time and growth Rattler will get his shot and here's the thing no matter who wins the job um I think each one of the these guys at some point is gonna get a shot I I certainly do if I even think that even if Carr doesn't get hurt which is unlikely with this offensive line we're gonna get to that next but even if car doesn't get hurt I think they find a way to get maybe each one of them in at some point Zack says he thinks he that rler has momes s like sometimes things don't go your way and there's things that are out of your control so you know I'm super confident with what I went and went and did and operated and and was asking me so I got to be super confident what I can do and who I am um and I believe in myself I'm confident what I can do uh and I believe you know that I can play at this level and play at a really high level so um you know we'll go back and like I said we'll watch the tape we'll watch the decisions I made but overall like felt like I made really good decisions um Extended some plays with my feet yeah preseason offseason felt super confident what I did um you know you guys were at all the practices I felt like I did you know about all I can do and and all I can ask for when I go back and look at the tape of what I did um you know these 25 practices uh turn the ball over two or three times um other than that continue to get better continue to grow in this system and you know we'll see we'll see what uh what the evaluation looks like on this tape and uh come back on Tuesday with you know probably some answers one thing I can tell you for sure is no matter what he feels about whether he's number two or number three you can bet your sweet ass that he is listening to comments and and sees things on X or wherever or Instagram or how he knows that people love Spencer rattler which means that they kind of hate him by you know indirectly hate him so if somebody was hating on you and you thought you were winning a job and you get to it and I mean I think that's what's starting to come out in him big sea and I'm ready to disagree with you wholeheartedly game three was first of all why would game three be a tie why would preseason game three be a tiebreaker it's not one game they've had had there first of all they weren't tied okay let's just put that to bed they weren't tied Hanner it was herner's job to lose but SEC second of all or third of all wherever of all they've had 20 some odd practices in training camp and three preseason games why would it come down to one game it wasn't that close and then the second part of your comment Rattler beat him silly what from this line line score that you see on the screen other than the point total and again we told you about how Hanner had some bad breaks and had at least 10 points taken off of his Ledger which would have probably been points off of Rattler's Ledger but seven for 13 for 105 eight for 17 for 87 they've basically been what and what I gotta be honest I don't think again carg gets hurt we're screwed but what would make you think from those stats that Rattler beat I heard that Rattler was so great why what was so different go back and look at the game and try to look at it objectively as I did last night I'm like maybe I'm Maybe I'm Wrong maybe Rattler was that much better yesterday I literally went home and I'm and I'm listening to WWL and the people call up WWL on my way home and listening to people in the Press Box and I'm like maybe I'm wrong let me go home and watch this again and I don't get it Rattler was and Hanner both I thought did a good job of moving out of the pocket I thought when Hanner missed it was because he was pressured and one time he couldn't see and he threw it about a yard too far but Rattler was also pressured a couple of times and missed on passes again I said I thought Rattler's touchdown pass was the best pass of preseason Justin dude he was 100% better three scoring drives did you not watch and I don't know if you're just talking about me but the Rattler hate is crazy I was at the game so was I Rattler is just different he's better in every area no he's not he's not better in every area he's just not again I think we're talking about something in the grand scheme and things that not going to matter but it is fun to talk about it is it is Gordon says he's better in everything except stats finally somebody uh saying something else Rattler had five drop passes well he actually only had two he only had two drop passes but we can we can exaggerate to make our point a lot of people exaggerate to make their point I get it I think you're missing the greater point of if you go through the game and watch it with objective eyes not I love Spencer Rattler he's my new favorite player be your favorite player again it's not GNA matter both of these guys are gonna be on the bench I'm just talking about I'm gonna leave it with this I'm going to go back to what I was saying earlier about my point of where I am right now if cars going down and he's going to be down for a game or he's going to miss the second half then there's zero question I would rather have Jay Kaner in there that's why I think not only should he be number two I think he will be number two because I think that's how Dennis Allen thinks would it shock me if I'm wrong and Rattler's name number two it wouldn't shock me at all it's a lot closer than when they came into Camp I didn't think it was all that close and I definitely think it's close now but so that being said if it's a short-term thing I think it's going to be haer if I agree with Zach ying and a couple other people who have said this that if Carr goes down in like week two or week three and it looks like he's gonna miss eight weeks or God forbid the season then I don't care I honestly don't care who you put in there at that point because the season's a Lost season but what I think the team would do is probably go find a veteran and if they were decid if they had to decide between Hanner or or Rattler then I would say you know what if you think Rattler has that much upside and you want to give him a chance to play 12 games go for it that's where I think this team is Big Shan we can agree to disagree it's not better in every area but he sure does move the sticks better I don't have a you know what I'll tell you what I'm gonna do for you Big Sean um not Thursday because it's going to be the betting show but Friday when I come on Friday if you come back Friday morning 11: a.m. when we go live I will put together stats and I will tell you how many of them had more first downs or whatever and again this is just preseason games they're playing against different people you got to remember that whole first game that Hanner was playing against basically a first string offense I mean defense excuse me in Arizona and Hanner was play I mean Rattler was playing against like third string defense so anyway we got to move on we're at the 55 minute we could probably talk about this for another hour and people would still listen but there are other pieces of where this team is right now that I want to talk about because I don't want this to be a two-hour show I don't even want it to be an hour and a half show and that's where we're going right now um we're gonna again there are there Roster battles were many battles that are going to be decided I don't think we're going to get to all of them today I'll say real quickly I think it's clear that BL uh Blake groupy is the kicker uh I think Charlie Smith in a perfect world like you got this is where I know a lot of people want Smith and I actually want Smith to be the kicker but I don't think he's gonna I think yes and I know Smith had an injury or whatever he supposedly had an injury but then he went and kicked the kick off out of the end zone so he can't be that hurt uh so groupy is going to win the kicker job punter is a mess punter is is an absolute disaster I don't think either Headley or hayball should be on an NFL roster they're awful that being said I think Hao is gonna be the one that makes it through tomorrow because headley's been that bad and I think in the end I don't think the Saints opening day punter is on this roster right now I think he's on someone else's roster I think someone who's going to get cut from another roster will be the punter for the New Orleans Saints and you all know the Saints need a punter they need one who has a better net yardage than what Headley had yesterday and I think it was 28 no so I think K's gonna win the job but um because he has a bigger leg but again I don't think either one of them been any good and they they've kind of both been awful Zach that punting of 42 yards Hedley was I'm telling you he was in the 20s I don't know exactly what the number is we're going to get to that all right because I do want to spend some time where at the again we at the almost dollar Mark I want to talk about Trevor Penning and um I'm not going to spend a ton of time on it Rocky says the Saints need to back up the truck for you keep saying it my friend I get it back up the truck for an O lineman as they get released not going to happen I just don't think it I mean if they haven't done it by now they're not going to do it if they haven't done it by now they're just not GNA do it so I think that this team is going to go at least go into this season with Trevor Penning as a starting right tackle and I gotta say also at this point I don't know why they wouldn't because they haven't seen anyone that's been better I was thinking Ali Udo was going to kind of come and steal the job and he hasn't he hasn't been any good either Landon young hasn't been good so we can listen to what Dennis Allen has to say it's a 50 second uh 56 second clip on his thoughts you can tell that he doesn't like where he is but you backed yourself into this corner and now you're kind of stuck here it's hard for me to comment too much I I do think there was a few plays in there that I thought uh was was an improvement you know um and so um without without looking at it that the the the offensive line defensive line those are tougher evaluations just coming right off the right off the field but I thought overall I I know this I I know that um I thought he played better in last week's game I thought he improved this week in practice you know and I saw some good things tonight too so um you know I think there's some some some improvement being the way you guys challenged him by there you think that had any impact on maybe that improv probably a better question for him you know what I mean um all I can tell you is that I felt like played better in the game I thought he had a good week of practice um and I thought he did some good things tonight yeah I mean he's clearly frustrated with what he's got there and he doesn't know what to do again you let yourself get there you know you two years ago and I'm not saying Dennis Allen necessarily because it not have been his decision but I'm going go back to a year and a half ago or not even quite a year and a half ago what is it 15 months to the 20123 draft when you picked Isaiah fosy with the second round pick you pick Brian B fine he's turning into a decent player I didn't really like the pick I thought they needed a lineman then but your second pick you pick Isaiah fosy are you insane whoever made that final decision I don't even know what to say I don't want to say they should be fired because no one should be fired for one decision unless it's like so egregious it ruins a a company or a business or a franchise so I don't want to say you should be fired because you make one decision that would be exaggerating like five drops but I mean I was pissed off then and I'm still pissed off about it Isaiah fosi probably I'm not gonna say probably there's at least a 5050 chance that Isaiah fosy isn't on this team as we record this at noon on Monday in 27 hours when the cutdown hits excuse me a legitimate chance Isaiah fos is not on this team which means you completely whiffed and wasted that pick you could have had an offensive lineman there would he have been it might have been another TR pting it might not have been any good but at least you would have been addressing something that you had to address I don't even know what they thought they were doing there you just pick Brian br now you're going to go pick Isaiah fosy why that's where this team is with offensive lineman right now they're they have backed themselves into a corner and they spent the entire offseason sure they addressed fanga but that's basically just addressing the loss of ram you didn't address the loss of Pete who was really not that good but he was certainly better than Trevor Penning last year that's saying a whole lot because Anders Pete might get cut from what I'm hearing would they take him back if he gets cut I don't know I think there's some bad blood there so I doubt it but you have back yourself into this corner to where you have to play to a Penning at right tackle and I hope it's not as disastrous as I think it's going to be because let me tell you they found ways around it yesterday against a team not playing a real defense but when they when they go up against maybe not even Carolina but when you go up against against Micah Parsons and the Dallas Cowboys in week two you go up against the Philadelphia Eagles in week three you go up against the oh Atlanta Falcons whatever and you up go against the Kansas City Chiefs in week five it's gonna be a problem it's gonna be a major problem Zach says he feels like the lights are on but no one is home don't F feel like he gets the concept of pass blocking in regards 100% agree and I think it's almost as bad in run blocking there were times in all three games at least twice in all three games you can go back and watch he like goes out to block and he's standing by himself with no one around him and he's kind of looking around like uh am I supposed to block somebody here I mean dude really I mean there are times when I'm not even talking about when he gets pushed back into the quarterback that's gotten a little bit better but yesterday I thought there were there were at least four or five plays where he got pushed back both Duren hayner at quarterback and when Rattler was playing and both were able to escape and get around it one time where I think Rattler got sacked it's just it's not good but at this point I don't think there's anything you can do about it um other battles again moving on because I do want to spend five minutes on El two lane before we go uh other battles I think Anthony orgy has made this this team and I would have never I didn't I haven't even heard of this dude before like three weeks ago definitely I mean he's got to make this team I think Jordan Howen has done enough to be your first team safety uh and Zach says D tro by Penning it's sad because he's an ax I mean he reminds me of Ky Turley and I know KY look this is why I think there and I'm I'm talking about slight sliver when I'm saying sliver I mean like the slice of pie that's left over if you give me a pie what's going to be left not much so this much sliver of hope that he can be something because there have been other linemen that have taken a long time to develop but you're in year three now buddy and I don't get it so and his biggest problem there is zero doubt in my mind that pennings biggest problem is his lack of confidence when you lose you you all know I'm sure at some points maybe not you 20s somethings you're all cocky and confident about everything wait till you get to my age dude you get knocked down real because I can tell you when I was 25 years old I was the cockiest mofo on the planet I once told a boss to get away from my Mac how I was still employed after that and I turned around like I was going to hit him now he was scared the [ __ ] shitless out of me from me of me but it's a miracle I didn't get fired that I'm still in the in the business today that was I don't know 28 26 years ago I was a cocky mofo so I get it but just think about it when you've gone through your life even if it's just for a little bit if you lose your confidence how long does it take it back sometimes you don't think you're going to get it back it's happened to me will he get it back I don't know if he does maybe he can turn into a player because you know like Zach said he's an ax he's got he's got the physical ability to be a starting tackle in the NFL I don't know if he's got the brain to do it and I don't mean that he's dumb I mean that something's gotten in there and has made him think that he can't do it I don't know if you get that back we'll find out um so we've talked about some of the other battles wide receiver what about wide receiver um so we know we know the first two they're easy and we know three is probably Cedric Wilson what about four is it at Perry did he do enough yesterday I don't know what the deal is with at Perry but he's obviously in Dennis Allen's dog house some kind of way I haven't figured that one out I don't get it maybe he half asses it sometime I don't know what the deal is there something's going on but at Perry I think makes this team almost by default I mean let's be honest who's better who's been better than at Perry I don't know so if he's your four which I think there's a good at Perry has lazy arms okay maybe um alligator arms you mean that's what I used to always call it maybe I wasn't real happy with his thing yesterday of uh of not staying in bounds on the play I don't think he gave enough effort there was another play too where I think it was a rattler pass where he didn't give enough effort to try to catch the ball that did bother me Rocky thinks it's olve Shahed Wilson at Perry Bob means and equinus I don't think they're gonna keep six Rocky and here uh so I'm with you on most of that I like the first four I know that everybody's like thinking not everybody I I should never say everybody but most people especially the Fanboy podcast Love Bob Means um I don't see any reason to put BB means on this active roster none put him on a practice squad I'm not saying you won't call him up and need him and use him in regular season games but I don't think he needs to be on this active roster in week one I think it's very easy to put him on to cut him put him on the practice squad I don't think you're going to lose him because I think you'd rather have this point equin of St Brown I think you need is it's gonna be Stanley Morgan if they're gonna take a receiver slash special teams guy it's probably gonna be Stanley Morgan that's that's my guess um I wouldn't have a problem if he makes the team he certainly he kind of won my heart a little bit with that more than even the field goal return I just thought that was cool as hell maybe other people didn't as much as I did but I'm a personal look I like personalities too I'm not saying personalities should win you a a starting job in football or whatever that's but if you got a if you have a tie it's like everything else in life if you're gonna hire somebody let's say you get 12 candidates applying for one job and you're interviewing all these people and you get down to the final two and they're tied and you like one you just like them as a person and the other person you're like he that right but she's all right which one you gonna pick I'm saying that plays a part but also go back and look at his stats from like UFL and I think either played in the XFL or usfl before that or maybe the CFL they weren't very good so he hasn't done very much in his post uh post college and he didn't really do much in college either Sean says practice squad maybe but the problem with the practice squad here there's another thing with receiver man I mean think about guys you would want to put in the practice squad I think he's a got a some of the things that we're doing how do we get an initial jump start getting prepared uh for Carolina and how do we get these guys back and and and ready physically um you know for the for the opening game yeah so I mean I think uh I think rightfully so they're probably going to take a couple days off do what they got to do with the cuts and then probably go at it late and I would be willing to V by Thursday or so they're really focused on a Carolina but look man you just been through some grueling times you do need some time off I'm all about that we got some newcomers and some fun well they got a three-way battle it was Ty Thompson versus Kai Horton now it's Tai Thompson versus Kai Horton versus Daren menah Daren menah came out of nowhere and I think he's got a decent chance to win this job but John sual is talking about playing all three of them at some point Thursday to me that doesn't necessarily equal a 25 and a half point spread you know what I mean if you're playing three quarterbacks and you're experimenting because you know you can win be careful with that Green Wave uh South Eastern by the way they've got a lot of overhaul Coach Frank selfo he doesn't care he always uses multiple quarterbacks he loves doing that not always but he likes doing it um and the Lions they lost some seniors from last year's team or a couple transfers or whatever but uh so may they might not be quite as good as they were but I still think that maybe 25 and a half is a little bit too much now for the LSU Tigers Sunday September 1st in Las Vegas as Gabe was talking about earlier that six and a half point spread dropped six dropped five and a half down to four and a half is it going to go any lower than that I'm not I don't know but I'm really not sure why it's dropping so much why is everybody loving on USC first game post Caleb Williams era new quarterback Moss Miller is moss Miller that good GNA find out it's a must-win it's not like LSU before LSU has slowly rolled out of the gate as of late they cannot afford to do that this year they have got to win Joseph wants to know how the Raging Cajun look this year I gotta be honest I'm gonna be straight up honest I don't know but I will I will uh look into it Gabe is that you telling me they're not going to be good or you don't know oh I I I don't know uh but we will we will uh I'll tell you what I we'll look into the Cadence a little bit I just haven't had time but I will look into the Cadence um I know they have a new quarterback this year because their quarterback the last four years I think he's been like three or four years it's finally gone I know they lost a guy named kabot who's playing for the New Orleans Saints how about that all right that is going to just about do it for us today
