close-up meeting handshake with the Holy Father I couldn't see his face it could be one of the governors government officials one by one are being introduced and uh The Honorable Justin chenko is Honorable elas some of them you know you want to call their names well most of them most of them are are from our local dasis in Papa New Guinea uh I understand visitors will be the uh Cardinal from Tonga and is amongst the clergy there as well as the uh couple of bishops from abroad like Australia and New Zealand and uh the Archbishop of shua in Fiji uh they feel that they have to be present because of the uh the paple and Apostolic visit here is also Oceania and so they have a presence and you can see the governor general himself already um arrived earlier and in preparation for the Holy Father to come in and he will have to receive the Holy Father at APAC house day and D TOA J the head of the Motu quab qu tabun here in the N here in the National capitalist with him I think it is also important to note here that this is happening at uh one of uh papon's important fixures where uh where when we held the ape in in in in the country sometime back a couple of years back um and and the meeting is taking place it's important and I think if uh uh it is also important to note here that what we are showing is now going almost all over the world it's going on uh on Sky News it's going it's being shown that the Vatican television the Italian the in Italy as well as in Reus salom television in Canada uh EWTN and uh and uh definitely definitely there are visions of that going to argentinia the the home country of the Holy Father Pope Francis he should be arriving there shortly and uh will be received by the governor general for and on behalf of the people of papini and of all the other leaders who come from other neighboring countries as well who are seated there J I think it's also important to note all our uh hardworking people behind the scenes to getting this uh images to our viewers throughout the world and uh I think it's also given us uh to prove that that uh we are able to do it professionally quality is here and so uh I just would like to take that note to acknowledge all our uh people who are working behind the scenes to enable the technicians the producers and everybody and also our media uh the cooperation the collaboration for this event is just unimaginable everybody has come together they have had a long long meetings to ensure distin work out very well because we are putting papini on the international scene totally agree the mini popmobile if you like it's mini it might look small but what that small popmobile is bringing in and bringing out into our country and at Tek house is something big is the is the world leader uh a spiritual world leader as well as a country leader it's interesting that in pin we always uh have a a practical job members of the clergy some of them you know you want to call their names well most of them most of them are are from our local dasis in Papa New Guinea uh I understand the visitors will be the uh Cardinal from Tonga and is amongst the uh clergy there as well as the uh couple of bishops from abroad like Australia and New Zealand and uh the Archbishop of shua in Fiji uh they feel that they have to be present because of the uh the pap and Apostolic visit here is also oania and so they have a presence and you can see the governor general himself already um arrived earlier in in preparation for the Holy Father to come in and he will have to receive the Holy Father at APAC house there and daddy too Jun the head of the Motu quabo quab here in the N here in the National capitalist with him I think it is also important to note here that this is happening at uh one of uh papon's important fixures where uh where when we held the Apec in in in in the country sometime back a couple of years back um and and the meeting is taking place it's important and I think if uh uh it is also important to note here that what we are showing is now going almost all over the world it's going on uh on Sky News it's going it's being shown at the Vatican television the Italian the in should be arriving there shortly and uh will be received by the governor general for and on behalf of the people of papini and of all the other leaders who come from other neighboring countries as well are seated there J I think it's also important to note all our uh hardworking people behind the scenes to getting this uh images to our viewers throughout the world and uh I think it's also given us uh to prove that uh we are able to do it professionally equality is here and so uh I just would like to take that note to acknowledge all our uh people who are working behind the scenes to enable the technicians the producers and everybody and also our media uh the cooperation the collaboration for this event is just unimaginable everybody has come together they have had a long long meetings to ensure these things work out very well because we are putting papini on the international scene totally agree the mini popma bile if you like it's min it might look small but what that small popmobile is bringing in and bringing out into our country and that Tap House is something big is the is the world leader h a spiritual world leader as well as a country leader it's interesting that in pijin we always uh have a a practical joke saying that now here we see leg car for a big man country picture country where father Argentina picture canion Italy look look vaan television Sky News Pi so John what we are really seeing uh and I really hope and pray that this will be really our uh way forward to have that Mutual uh collaboration and respect between the state as well as with uh the the government the state and the churches and our leaders uh I think at all levels the collaboration the mutual respect to coexist and to support and complement one another this whole uh experience is bring bringing this out and the richness of the culture and the recognition of the talents and skills that people have for the benefit of everyone and so uh these are some of the uh things or maybe the outcome of what we are observing and witnessing uh that stands out clearly is a a result and the fruit of this kind of uh uh collaboration and experience yes I think Bishop I think legally something I think father come inside welcome he didn't go past them to the next he just said I want to see them dance a little bit so they pused there for a while and turned his wheelchair around for him to stay and then the girls performed there for him um it could have been scripted planned or it could have been uh just something that happened right there and then yeah and John what brings it out from that point of view too is the noticing the little details absolutely you don't ignore and he's taking the lift he's gone upstairs at the AP house where this will be the main meeting I'd like to think I'd like to think next to him is of course the governor general of Pap n the Grand Chief Shob dad I noticed that his wheelchair and there's always someone standing right next to is being handled by Vatican staff themselves most of the uh carers around him are his own that came with him from the Vatican the onour Raj was composed of uh the media the journalists and his own uh caretakers yes and they know exactly what to do so they wouldn't allow anybody else to touch him wrong something there was a little bit of that at the airport and I think there was a little bit of a scale there that he might the trip but it's always uh important you you know people who have close to you and they know your ways of Behaving so this are people you have to always have them around you absolutely absolutely and this is our live telecast we continue that uh of uh the visit by the Holy Father to Port Mosby in papor N we are now at Apec house at Ella beach in Port Mosby the capital city of the country where the Holy Father is no doubt and we are anticipating that will say something to a gathering of uh leaders political leaders of papor n as well as Business Leaders and other people gathered to hear from uh the Holy Father and I think uh to begin that I think there'll be a speech by the governor general um the Grand Chief shabob d uh who will no doubt welcome the whole bless you and God bless Papa thank you very much it is now my honor to invite his Holiness Pope Francis to give his address to the country I'm very pleased to be with you today and to visit Pap I thank the governor general forward welcome and all of you for your warm reception I extend my greetings to the people of the country wishing them peace and prosperity and I also express my gratitude to the authorities for helping the church in a spirit of mutual cooperation for the benefit more than languages are spoken corresponding to just as many ethnic groups this point to a extraordinary cultural richness must confess this greatly fascinates me also on a spiritual level because I imagine that this enormous variety is a challenge to the Holy Spirit who creates Harmony amid differences your country beside consisting of islands and languages is also so rich in natural resources these goods are destined by God for the entire Community even if outside even if outside experts and large International companies must be involved in the aning of these resources is only right that the needs of local people are given due consideration when Distributing the proceeds and employing workers in order to improve their living conditions these Environmental and Cultural Treasures represent at the same time a great responsibility because they require everyone Civil Authorities and all citizens to promote initiatives that develop natural and human resources in a sustainable and Equitable manner that provides the wellbeing of all excluding nobody through concrete programs International cooperation mutual respect and agreements beneficial to all parties necessary condition for such lasting result is the stability of Institutions which is Foster by agreement on certain essential points and his different concepts and sensibilities present in society indeed increasing institutional stability and building consensus on fundamental choices is a prerequisite for integral and fair development it also requires a long-term vision and a climate of cooperation among all even if there is a distinction of roles and differences of opinion benefit of all the people of the country indeed the AFF formation attitudes can create the conditions in which the question of the status of bville Island can also find the definitive solution while avoiding the rec kindly cotion tensions by bolstering agreement on the fundamental elements of Civil Society together with the willingness of each person to sacrifice something from his or her point of view for the benefit of all the necessary forces can be utilized to improve infrastructure address the health and educational needs of the population and increase opportunities for dignified work sometimes we forget that human beings need more than just the basic necessities of life they also need great hope in their heart this allows them to live fully give them zest and encourage to undertake wide ranging projects and enables them to lift their gaze upward to vast Horizons an abundance of material Goods is not enough to give B to a lifegiving Serene hardworking and joyful society which without a brother spiritual Outlook T see on itself and leads a dryness of fire as a result Society loses his weight and forgets the correct hierarchy of whatever the dryness takes away society's drive to move forward and as happens in some opulent societies blocks its progress to the extent that it loses hope in the future and can go no longer find reason to pass on life and faith to Future generators that is why it is necessary to direct the spirit towards greater realities our attitudes and action must be sustained by a Inner Strength which shelters them from the risk of being corrupted or of losing the ability to recognize the value of work and the need to carry it out with dedication and devotion spiritual values greatly influence the building of the Earthly City and all temporal realities in other words these values Infuse a soul and Inspire and strengthen every PR symbol [Music] [Music] in for [Music] congrat fore it's television being what it is television being what it is uh Arch Bishop uh um we lost a bit of audio there a lot bit of pictures there that's outside broadcast television so uh we have apologize for that but there it was uh a speech from the governor general and a reply or a speech from the Holy Father at apek house and um and as we I mean he spoke in Italian so we there was a bit of translation and uh uh what I heard was he did mention inde did man um television again television being what it is we do seem to have a few problems coming out of Apex house at Ella Beach there we had the governor general speaking earlier on and then uh the Holy Father speaking there let's let's just have a look quick look at what the governor general that he spoke about climate change uh uh and I think uh that is the thrust of his his uh visity of the Holy Father so it was uh appropriate that Pap being part of the Pacific and climate change becoming an important issue he did touch on that yes John I think what the governor general presented to the Holy Father are the issues that we are quite familiar with the realities that we are living through and uh as he mentioned uh enough of talking let us really do something and a change of attitude a change of uh policies and uh uh Living Styles has to uh really be the way to go forward and in in in the Holy father's uh not so much respond but in his uh in his speech and it was in Italian but the quick translation we were able to get was he did touch on Bonville and I thought that was interesting um because as you know bone vilans are very strong Catholics and if anything we had our first Archbishop from bville uh a Peter coru and uh and uh and because of uh the situation where we are right now with bville and the referendum on bville and uh I thought that uh he did although we could not hear clearly what he was saying interesting uh uh provincial uh leader of bville meeting the Holy Father yesterday for the welcome they had a bit of chat that you may realize there was a bit of and I think uh personally they would have the minister for uh interior security and police is saying something Whispering almost yeah using that opportunity that is is the closest you can get to whisper to the Holy Father these our issues this and maybe asking for special blessings and and prayers this time and it just happened that uh as you can Asain from that is that uh the Holy Father uh knows basically what are the key issues of concerns for the country politically as much as for the economic uh uh situation that we are but also with the climate and the environment these are all issues that he is well aware of encourage us all to remain seated whilst that's happening thank you the [Music] clear this [Music] who's this okay Archbishop all right there it was the the Gathering of leaders political leaders civil leaders at ape house and now uh the holy father is being escorted to a number of chosen people to have a have a personal greetings with a number of people and I think the Vatican uh media is uh making sure that uh all this uh is captured for their records and there are a number of special people there we can't really see but I'd like to think that lady Veronica is amongst them and uh she of course is the wife of the Grand Chief s Michael Samar she might have flown all the way to for Mosby to be part of that and I think she just uh met with uh the Holy Father and I think it is a very special moment for her as a strong Catholic that she gets the opportunity close up to say hello to Pope Francis what a memorable moment that is for lady Veronica to meet with the Holy Father and these personal exchanges with the special chosen people at a house uh is of course the media swamping them as well uh the young kids of uh who got dressed this morning for this special occasion the Holy Father is now being uh uh there's RADS of special people that a front row and then now he's going through the back row of these people where he meets them personally I'd like to I'd like to know what what he's giving to them from his uh his uh his staff to the girls who are performing there that little music group John will hly Holy Rosary rosaries okay and yes the theme of this Pap visit is uh don't help us to pray or teach us to pray so now he offering them the uh an aid to help them to pray and that's uh basically what is encouraging people to do and that's really nice that's really nice and in his uh uh Speech you can can hear he said pray three times it's almost saying that the first thing you have to do is pray secondly you have to pray thirdly you have to pray pray okay okay and uh yes in papini we do need to pray it was also very good to see see a good number of uh our leaders political leaders uh present and also the business community and all our uh Partners working together to helping promote uh the the values and the the concerns of Papa new guineans it was a bipartisan uh meeting of uh leaders uh to hear the Holy Father speak as both from the opposition and government ministers and the opposition uh back benches so that was quite um quite encouraging of what might be ahead and this is the um the uh last part of the morning engagement with the Holy Father after meeting with uh after paying a courtesy call on the governor general Governor General in in at government house um he then uh moved to Apec house where he where both leaders where both leaders the governor general and the Holy Father made speeches this will be the second part of another meeting with the uh the Pacific or maybe some of the leaders because they were according to what was proposed there will be some opportunity for the others from the Pacific as well and we just realized that he's now seated again for a kind of an audience yeah this could be the uh leadership from uh Tonga the Kingdom of Tonga so our Pacific leaders who cannot receive the Holy Father coming to their their respective country yeah so they came through so they actually um accommodated them so that they can have a u an audience with Hime Minister him and both the governor general and the Holy Father together yes the prime minister of uh Tonga and we also have the prime minister of vanatu uh shalot salw and his wife and the prime minister or the head president of noru uh president David adang and the Secretary General of the Pacific island forum is Baron Waka than the Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum former president of n presid thank you so much so blessed thank you inde and as we said a little earlier on the Naru is a a a small country rich in phosphate uh and uh the land area and the number of people there are the same as that of the Vatican state so there's something in common between those two as they shake hands in exchange and of course most of those from Naru are Catholics he told him to exchange the gift for moment interesting moment there was the M he was once a Catholic priest that's right the housing Minister for the papini government the housing minister of papan nugini honorable francisa saso from from the autonomous region of benville from does something special a special present from the people of bville and from her I don't know a pro call I expected that but that's special in PNG we always say the land of the unexpected and yes Soso is the unexpected and her husband that is name John the uh managing director of Tropicana a special moment in their lives honorable jela Wang Minister for Fisheries Minister gent sir Julius Chen former prime minister of papini and governor of New Ireland with our governor for the city honorable PA SP and we might idea that sir Julius Chan The Last Man Standing sorry in the political history of Pap and since before independence up till now is the only one livad the start of Independence to today all the other leaders that were part of the first cabinet of Pap Nini in 1973 have all died the only one sending is s Julius champ secretary for Education higher education and our father of the cathol Church Father Yang tuba the former president of the Divine World University govern higher education thank bless you K joh the Holy Father did touch on bville and uh and as we know we have a bville referendum and I think sili is uh mindful of that and the strong uh strong population of Catholics on the island a private conversation unscripted a letter a petition whatever it is it's something that they planned on doing and they uh seize this moment a moment they'll probably never have I wonder which language they are using to communicate that long well see the important thing is how accomodating the Holy Father is of that Mr ARA Samari it's a young Samari a strong Catholic Family his honor Justice narobi nari a son of the late Bernard narobi another important figure in the political history of this country ho father helped him to stand the High Commissioner of Australia here in papini John the Australian High Commissioner Pap it's one diplomate meeting another diplomate diplomate I suppose but this time it is the D Monica Sal honorable ddy TOA Jr Deputy Governor of the city and chairman of moto lady wined Comet I notice in some of the uh some of the recipients uh in the excitement of meeting the Holy Father they are forgetting to say hello to their own governor general who sitting next to I suppose they have more opportunities to and she's one of them of the Solomon is for Papa guine thank you very God bless you pray for me his Excellency the moderator of the United Church and after be sure you may Enlighten us the uh uh the person the clergy who is sitting next to to the Holy Father would be secretaries that will be like personal aid and they always get the title of monor uh a senior clergy man and uh they are available to him uh like now for translation uh and also for guiding introducing people to to him uh so they are handy when come to uh public audiences like this okay and they would know at least some of the insights of what's taking place just to be prepared and alert so that the Holy Father knows what's going on so he'd be in the rank of a bishop Archbishop they normally get that uh uh particular title which uh amono and a mono will be just the same as a special uh recognition of his aiding the Holy Father in this capacity it could also uh be a a bishop yes and they they walk him about a secretary uh personal secretary they they do this kind of uh uh closeness and especially in uh theing is small like you can a personal um protocol officer that is comes handy in this particular situations like this and they had just received a I think a picture of a bird of paradise from our foreign affairs minister jenko your Holiness Pope Francis and our governor general thank you very much that concludes our special welcoming to our important guests selected guests from our country thank you very much your h and that there concludes the little session the exchange of gifts between the Holy Father and a selected number of uh leaders individuals in Papa Nini um one of those included sir Julius Chan the governor of New Island the the surviving member of the early cabinet of the independent state of Pap Nini and is also a member of the Samari family and among them uh B willans so I think uh the selection of people to exchange gifts were uh selected deliberately to represent the country on a on a broad scale and uh the Holy Father now leaves apek house at El Beach accompanied by of course his own prot his own staff and our governor general the grand Chiefs AB D day and our foreign minister The Honorable Justin tchenko lose your Vint [Applause] from the smile on his face you can see that he enjoys this uh particular occasion this morning this encounter with the dignitaries and uh how big that's a bishop of uh we now I never never lose an opportunity to to meet the but I can't say that's part of the program you see how we turn his own wheelchair to meet the the bishop lined up along there because otherwise he was going to be wheeled straight out to the door but he said no M long line blow me yes and that's exactly what he's doing so close to and by penis this morning program govern now I'm one gracious Hospitality of your church the government and people of Papa God bless you and God bless Papa thank you very [Applause] much it is now my honor to invite his Holiness Pope Francis to give his address to the country at I'm very pleased to be with you today and to visit Pap I than the governor general forward so welcome and all of you for your warm reception I extend my greetings to the people of the country wishing them peace and prosperity and I also express my gratitude to the authorities for helping the church in a spirit of mutual cooperation for the benefit your with of violence more than 800 languages are spoken corresponding to just as many ethnic groups this points to a extraordinary cultural richness must confess this greatly Fates me also on a spiritual level because I imagine that this enormous variety a challenge the Holy Spirit who creates Harmony amid differences your country beside consisting of islands and languages is also rich in natural resources these goods are destined by God for the entire Community even if outside even if outside experts and large International companies must be involved in the aning of these resources is only right that the needs of local people are given due consideration when Distributing the proceeds and employing workers in order to improve their living conditions these Environmental and Cultural Treasures represent at the same time a great responsibility because they require everyone Civil Authorities and all citizens to promote initiatives that develop natural and human resources in a sustainable and Equitable manner that provides the wellbeing of all excluding nobody through concrete programs International cooperation mutual respect and agreements beneficial to all parties necessary condition for such lasting result is the stability of institutions which is fostered by agreement on certain essential points and his different concepts and sensibilities present in society indeed increasing institutional stability and building consensus on fundamental choices is a prerequisite for integral and fair development it also requires a long-term Vision in a climate of cooperation among all even if there is a distinction of roles and differences of opinion the benefit of all the people of the country indeed the formation attitudes can create the condition condition in which the question of the status of bville Island can also find a definitive solution while avoiding the rec kindly tensions by bolstering agreement on the fundamental elements of Civil Society together with the willingness of each person to sacrifice something from his or her point of view for the benefit of all the necessary forces can be utiliz to improve infrastructure address the health and educational needs of the population and increase opportunities for dignified work sometimes we forget that human beings need more than just the basic necessities of life they also need great hope in their hearts this allows them to live fully give them zest and encourage to undertake wide ranging projects and enables them to lift their gaze upward towards vast Horizons an abundance of material Goods it's not enough to give birth to a lifegiving Serene hardworking and joyful society which without a broader spiritual Outlook T see on itself and leads to a dryness of fire as a result Society loses his weight and forgets the correct of whatever the dryness takes away society's dry to move forward and as happens in some opulent societies blocks his progress to the extent that it loses hope in the future and can go no longer find reason to pass on life and faith to future generation that is why it is necessary to direct the spirit towards greater realities our attitudes and action must be sustained by a Inner Strength which shelters them from the risk of being corrupted or of losing their ability to recognize the value of work and the need to carry it out with dedication and devotion spiritual values greatly influence the building of the Earthly City and all temporal realities in other words these values Infuse a soul and Inspire and strength for for [Music] [Music] [Music] Sol [Music] for for what do you done it's television being what it is television being what it is uh Arch Bishop uh um we lost a bit of audio there a lot of television again television being what it is we do seem to have a few problems coming out of Apex house at Ella Beach there we had the governor general speaking earlier on and then uh the Holy Father speaking there let's let's just have a look quick look at what the governor general that he spoke about climate change uh uh and I think uh that is the thrust of his his uh visity of the Holy Father so it was uh appropriate that Pap being part of the Pacific and climate change becoming an important issue he did touch on that yes John I think uh what the governor general presented to the Holy Father are the issues that we are quite familiar with the realities that we are living through and uh as he mentioned uh enough of talking let us really do something and a change of attitude a change of uh policies and uh uh Living Styles has to uh really be the way to go forward and uh in in in the Holy father's uh not so much response but in his uh in his speech and it was in Italian but uh quick translation we able to get was he did touch on Beville and I thought that was interesting um because as you know bvillians are very strong Catholics and if anything we had our first Archbishop from banville uh a Peter konu and uh and uh and because of uh the situation where we are right now with banville and the referendum on bville and uh I thought that he did although we could not hear clearly what he was saying interesting uh provincial uh leader of bville what a memorable moment that is for lady Veronica to meet with the Holy Father and these personal exchanges with the special chosen people at AEK house uh is of course the media swamp them as well uh the young kids of uh who got dressed this morning for this special occasion the Holy Father is now being uh uh there row of special people at the front row and then now he's going through the back row of these people where he meets them personally I'd like to I'd like to know what what he's giving to them from his uh his uh his staff to the girls who are performing there that little music group John that will be hly Rosary Rosary okay and yes the theme of this Pap visit is uh don't help us to pray or teach us to pray so now he offering them the uh an aid to help them to pray and that's uh basically what is encouraging people to do and that's really nice that's really nice and in his uh uh Speech you can can hear he said pray three times it's almost saying that the first thing you have to do is pray secondly you have to pray thirdly you have to pray pray okay okay and uh yes in papini we do need to pray was also very good to see a good number of uh our leaders political leaders uh press and also the business community and all our uh Partners working together to helping promote uh the the values and the the concerns of Papa new guineans it was a bipartisan uh meeting of uh leaders uh to hear the Holy Father speak both from the opposition and government ministers and the opposition uh backbenches so that was quite um quite encouraging of what might be ahead and this is the um the uh last part of the morning engagement where the Holy Father after meeting with uh after paying a courtesy call on the governor general Governor General in in at government house um he then uh moved to ape house where he where both leaders where both leaders the governor general and the Holy Father made speeches this should be the second part of another meeting with the uh the Pacific or maybe uh some of the leaders because they were according to what was proposed there will be some opportunity for the others from the Pacific as well and we just realized that he's now seated again for a kind of an audience yeah this could be the uh leadership from uh Tonga the Kingdom of Tonga so our specific leaders who cannot receive the Holy Father coming to their their own respective count yeah so they came through so they actually um accommodated them so they they can have a an audience with Hime Minister and both the governor general and the Holy Father together here's the prime minister of uh Tonga and we also have the prime minister of U vanatu uh shalot salw and his wife and the prime minister or the head president of noou uh president David adang and the Secretary General of the Pacific island forum is Baron Waka spe the Secretary General of the Pacific Islands forum [Music] for thank you so much so blessed thank you inde and and as we said a little earlier on the Naru is a a pleased to be with you today and to visit papini I thank the Govern general for his cward welcome and all of you for your warm reception I extend my greetings to the people of the country wishing them peace prosperity I also express my gratitude to the authorities for helping the church in a spirit of mutual cooperation and for the benefit with of violence more than 00 languages are spoken corresponding to just as many ethnic groups this point extraordinary cultural richness must confess this greatly fascinates me also on a spiritual level because I imagine that this enormous variey a challenge to the Holy Spirit who creates Harmony amid differences your country beside consisting of violence and languages is also rich in natural resources these goods are destined by God for the entire Community even if outside even if outside experts and last International companies must be involved in the aning of these resources this only right that the needs of local people are given due consideration when Distributing the proceeds and employing workers in order to improve their living condition these Environmental and Cultural Treasures represent the same time a great responsibility because they require everyone civil author ities and all citizens to promote initiatives that develop natural and human resources in a sustainable and Equitable Mana a Mana that provides the wellbeing of all excluding nobody through concrete programs International cooperation mutual respect and agreements beneficial to all parties necessary condition for such lasting result is the stability of Institutions which is fostered by agreement on certain essential points and different concepts and sensibilities present in society indeed in institutional stability and building consensus on fundamental choices is a prerequisite for integral and fair development it also requires a long-term vision and a climate of cooperation among all even if there is a distinction of roles and differences of opinion for the benefit of all the people of the country indeed the AFF formation attitudes can create the conditions in which the question of the status of bville Island can also find a definitive solution while avoiding the rec kindly tensions by bolstering agreement on the fundamental elements of Civil Society together with the willingness of each person to sacrifice something from his or her point of view for the benefit of all the necessary forces can be utilize to improve infrastructure address the health and educational needs of the population and increase opportunities for dignified work sometimes we forget that human beings need more than just the basic necessities of life they also need great hope in their hearts this allows them to live fully give them zest and ENC to undertake wide ranging projects and enables them to lift their gaze upward towards vast Horizons an abundance of material Goods it's not enough to give B to a lifegiving Serene hardworking and joyful society which without a broader spiritual Outlook can see on itself and leads to a dryness of fire as a result Society loses his weight and forgets the correct hierarchy of whatever the dryness takes away society's drive to move forward and as happens in some op societies blocks his progress to the extent that it loses hope in the future and can go no longer find reason to pass on life and Faith to Future Generations that is why it is necessary to direct the spirit towards greater realities our attitudes and action must be sustained by a Inner Strength which shelters them from the risk of being corrupted or of losing the ability to recognize the value of work and the need to carry it out with dedication and devotion spiritual values greatly influence the building of the atly city in all temporal realities in other words these values Infuse a soul and Inspire and streng one word pray pray PR for [Music] Grand [Music] theum Ro [Music] [Music] Pro for [Music] con it's television being what it is television being what it is uh Archbishop uh um we lost a bit of audio there lot of television again television being what it is we do seem to have a few problems coming out of Apex house at El Beach there we had the governor general speaking earlier on and then uh the Holy Father speaking there let's let's just have a look quick look at what the governor general said he spoke about climate change uh uh and I think uh that is the thrust of his his uh visity of the Holy Father so it was uh appropriate that Pap being part of the Pacific and climate change becoming an important issue he did touch on that yes John I think uh what the governor general presented to the Holy Father are the issues that we are quite familiar with the realities that we are living through and uh as he mentioned uh enough of talking let us really do something and a change of attitude a change of uh policies and uh uh living Styles has to uh really be the way to go forward and uh in in in the Holy father's uh not so much respon but in his uh in his speech and it was in Italian but the quick translation we're able to get was he did touch on bone bille and I thought that was interesting um because as you know bone vilans are very strong Catholics and if anything we had our first Archbishop from bville uh a Peter konu and uh and uh and because of uh the situation where we are right now with bville and the referendum on bville and uh I thought that uh he did although we could not hear clearly what he was saying interesting uh uh provincial uh leader of bville what a memorable moment that is for lady Veronica to meet with the Holy Father and these personal exchanges with the special chosen people at apek house uh is of course the media swamping them as well uh the young kids of uh who got dressed this morning for this special occasion the Holy Father is now being uh uh there rows of special people at the front row and then now he's going through the back row of these people where he meets them personally I'd like to I'd like to know what what he's giving to them from his uh is uh is staff to the girls who are performing there the little music group John that will be hly holy rosary Rosary okay and yes the theme of this Pap visit is uh don't help us to pray or teach us to pray so now he's offering them the uh an aid to help them to pray and that's uh basically what is encouraging people to do and that's really nice that's really nice and in his uh uh Speech you can can hear he said pray three times it's almost saying that the first thing you have to do is pray secondly you have to pray thirdly you have to pray pray okay okay and uh yes in papini we do need to pray those also very good to see a good number of uh our leaders political leaders uh present and also the business community and all our uh Partners working together to helping promote uh the the values and the the concerns of Po new guine it was a bipartisan U meeting of uh leaders uh to hear the Holy Father speak both from the opposition and government ministers and the opposition uh backbenches so that was quite um quite encouraging of what might be ahead and this is the um the uh last part of the morning engagement with the Holy Father after meeting with uh after paying a courtesy call on the governor general Governor General in in at government house um he then uh moved to ape house where he were both Leaders with both leaders the governor general and the Holy Father made speeches this will be the second part of another meeting with the uh the Pacific or maybe some of the leaders because they were according to what was proposed there will be some opportunity for the others from the Pacific as well and we just realized that um he's now seated again for a kind of an audience yeah this could be the uh leadership from uh Tonga the Kingdom of Tonga so our Pacific leaders who cannot receive the Holy Father coming to their their own respective country yeah so they came through so they actually um accommodated them so that they can have a an audience with Hime Min him and both the governor general and the Holy Father together here's the prime minister of uh Tonga and we also have the prime minister of vanatu shalot salw and his wife and the prime minister of the head president of noru uh president David adang and the Secretary General of the Pacific island forum is Baron Waka the Secretary General of the Pacific for for [Music] of you so much so blessed and and as we said a little earlier on the Naru is a a a small country rich in phosphate uh and uh the land area and the number of people there are the same as that of the Vatican state so there's something in common between those two as they shake hands in exchange and of course most of those from Naru are Catholics he told him to exchange the gift for moment interesting moment there was the moment he was once a Catholic priest that's right the housing Minister for the papini government the housing minister of papini honorable francisa saso from the autonomous region of benville from do something special as special present from the people of bville and from her I don't know if protocol I expected that but that's special in PNG we always say the land of the unexpected and yes samoo is the unexpected one and her husband that is name La John the managing director of Tropicana a special moment in their lives honorable jela Wang Minister for Fisheries Minister gent sir Julius Chen former prime minister of Papo Nini and governor of New iseland with governor for the city honorable PA SP and we might idea that sir Julius Chan the last man standing in the political history of papini is since before independence up till now is the only one livad the start of Independence to today all the other leaders that were part of the first cabinet of Pap Nini in 1973 have all died the only one attending is Sir Julius Chan secretary for Education a high education and a father of the Catholic Church Father Yang tuba the former president of the Divine World University and Governor secet higher education K Johnson the Holy Father did touch on bville and uh and as we know we have a bville referendum and I think s is uh mindful of that and the strong uh strong population of Catholics on the island a private conversation unscripted a letter a petition whatever it is it's something that they planned on doing and they uh seize this moment a moment they'll probably never have I wonder which language they are using to communicate that long well see the important thing is how accommodating the Holy Father is of that Mr AR Samari that's a young Samari a strong Catholic Family he honor Justice narobi nari son of the late Bernard narobi another important figure in the political history of this country ho father helped him to stand the High Commissioner of Australia here in papin John thank the Australian High Commissioner it's it's one diplomate meeting another diplomate CH diplomate I suppose but this time D Monica honorable daddy TOA Jr Deputy Governor of the city and chairman of Lady wined Comet I Noti in some of the uh some of the recipients uh in the excitement of meeting the Holy Father they are forgetting to say hello to their own governor general who sitting next to I suppose they have more opportunities to and she's one of them of the Solomon Islands for Papa guine thank you God bless you pray for me his Excellency the moderator of the United Church and arish you may Enlighten us the uh the person the clergy who sitting next to to the Holy Father would be secretaries that will be like his personal aid and they always get the title of mon a senior clergymen and uh they are available to him uh like now for translation uh and also for guiding in e the natural audio this is the gymnasium in uh the Caritas uh secondary girl secondary school that uh contributed also in the uh uh games and uh now the sisters and the students do benefit from it in the sense that uh to to Stage very important events and today is one of those occasions to actually uh get a good view of what is happening and with the focus this uh children from the Street Ministry and the kalang services which uh take accounts for all the disabled people like people with uh uh uh special needs that the Christian Brothers have been uh kind of innovative in introducing to uh even the education system to be able to to include those children with special needs to prepare them that they can read they can write and they can learn and also to observe them back into the the normal uh formal education system so uh these two groups you may see them as a disadvantage groups in our community and our society uh po Francis is much much more uh Keen to have a firsthand experience of this and uh the of what mby and mind you all our people who are caught up in this situation they are from the rest of so PNG is well represented by these children who will be now having the opportunity to have an audience with uh his Holiness Pope Francis and let them Express their reality their experiences and let us be interesting to hear what will be the message that uh the Holy Father will will give to them as way of giving them a hope uh giving them sense of their lives and especially young girls who are attending the school now they are singing away joyously and welcoming uh the ho father is he is now entering the the premises and and and some of some of the nuns and sisters there I take it their teachers and they're excited as the students to and the Holy Father at their mids notably with the song they are singing is actually a very popular religious a song sung by the United Church communities and it's interesting that the girls have learned this to welcome the pope with the kind of Sentiments of giving praise and joy to God and as I note is a very popular uh Melody from the United Church uh congregation and they are contributing such to to this particular event they uh actually in the AFF formation they have taken up all the all the uh grand stand on the top and to to be able to to provide the what you may call the background music singing while the uh children and the kalang services are more into the center and the middle of the the gymnasium and as you can uh see everybody the the students are all in Unis are really singing and bringing out this uh uh joyous Spirit of welcome and I think it is very very uh uh timely and the Holy Father will actually note such uh a spirit of the young people so joyful enjoying life and also importantly giveing giving an opportunity and hope to the children of the Street Ministry as much as the those with the special needs the Kang Services also reaching out to them and that is absolute wonderful picture that is going out to the rest of the country and the world a wonderful picture of young people getting this rare and first the only perhap opportunity in their lifetime to have the Holy Father come to their little institution their little world that they are TA to maybe 5 6 days a week and to the Holy Father come to them everybody is uh trying to have a an opportunity to to touch the Holy Father uh is there reaching out to him those in the front rows are the most previlege that they can easily reach out to him at is noing and uh noticing everyone acknowledging everyone as he moves around now Shi will be giving us uh what message that he has for them I can't help but notice that uh the media and the entage members of these entage who come from the Vatican are enjoying this as much as the Holy Father himself the contact that is happening is uh you cannot uh take away anything from it you see these are the children of the Street Ministry uh never had such an opportunity to feel so important and special by giving them this opportunity to encountering and meeting the Holy Father uh in person fir hand and I think amongst them as well you can the crowds there uh they are making their way to the center states where they may give away uh the Holy Father may may give his uh address but it's just in the air you could feel this uh Joy uh and for them it is also historical for them as persons as much as for the institution itself and some of these children dressed up in traditional costumes beautiful absolutely beautiful yeah they become always the attraction for the media as well uh you don't get this kind of pictures elsewhere in the world uh and so our children are presenting this colorful uh culture of our country that's why the Vatican television Personnel are so focused and as the pope will no doubt recollect is a PO Nation uh visit outside the Vatican Indonesia papist and Singapore and no that papini is trying to make this as memorable as it can not only for the people of papini but for those who come from the Vatican and the Holy Father himself [Laughter] [Music] and on the stage is uh the Holy Father and also our Cardinal S John rat who who I have no doubt will say a few things few words to the children and those who are gathered there and again you've got the the personal assistant to the Holy Father seated right next to him in case he needs anything the Archbishop of Port MOSI and the head of the Catholic church in Pap n and Solomon Islands Cardinal S John rber hello yes hello to you [Music] the mic the mic okay I think they will adjust okay okay okay we're giving the as well good afternoon everyone check now we are here to welcome our Holy Father Pope Francis to our children here the streets children and also Kang children PL Services children but so a Holy Father Pope Francis has said in the church there is room for everyone his visit today reminds us that Jesus does not Point his finger at anyone but opens his arms and Embraces all as we see with him on the cross Jesus never closes the door never but invites us to enter Jesus welcomes the words of Pope Francis provide us with consolation support and encouragement they give us motivation to live with the vulnerable Cas the street children and also the our handicap children in our society in our deliberate commitment promote Justice and peace among our people your Holiness your visit is a once in a lifetime experience for most of us who are gathered here we are excited to be part of your visit which encourages us to renew our commitment to our faith community your voice Comforts us in our struggles and the heartaches we are indebted you for making yourself available to us we ReDiscover the gift of faith and here again the call of Jesus to get up and walk your presence in our land helps us or helps all of us to know more about who and what we are to love what we know and that does serve what we love in an era of great advancement in science and the technology the church keeps our hopes Al Life by accompanying us and leading us forward in life thus we recall where we have been and where we are going we remember you in our daily prayers Holy Father especially that you may have good health may God bless and protect you as you carry out your ministry thank you can can I bring the [Applause] mic the opportunity for the Holy Father to give deliver his particular message in response to what uh the his Eminence Cardinal John rbat has a way of welcome and also Assurance of our prayers for the ongoing journey of the Holy Father to the other na the other nations and especially acknowledging our sensitivity and accommodation of uh the children especially and those with special needs as these ones he himself saw the need when he saw the children in po Mosby in the streets he he initiated this particular Ministry and has been faithful to promoting them and is uh is now uh giving opportunity for children to go back to the formal education and uh these children who are dancing particularly they come from uh the central Province but in particular our uh Goa mountains in the Das of binaa and uh most of them are living around in the settlements especially uh wada in the area near uh East barocco but also in other settlements but I think as usual they are not they will not be only the guas who are dancing there all the other uh beer groups have joined in with the excitement to be part of this experience that is why we are seeing a good crowd of children who are dancing The Gua dance this Wella dance is always typical uh because of the rugged mountains that the the they are fast to jump from uh spot to to spot especially when they are scaling up and down the mountains in the valleys and that you can see in the particular dance it would be something the Holy Father never seen in his life coming from South America and and uh uh background with uh from Europe uh this is something uh quite unique and I'm glad that uh they are giving the opportunity our children they have had the opportunity not only to continue roaming the streets but at least we have to reflect in their culture and make something worthwhile of uh themselves and if you look at uh the Holy Father he hasn't moved sideways or look sideways he's absolutely focused on the kids the way they dancing and if one of our cameras was there and listening maybe they should uh do a closeup of the Holy Father he's enjoying this look at that he's taking in every just about every step there from kid you saying they the dance reflects how they would negotiate the hills and the mountains that they move so their dance reflects that of course of all the dances in papor every dance always has or says something about the environment with which or papin is living I just think that the Holy Father is completely mesmerized by this [Music] [Music] I spent 10 years in the guys of B and this was a popular cycle with the the dance the dance and they it's interesting that they've taken it even though they left the mountain and grew up in the city they still have the natural uh the natural uh feeling for the beatest day as they say you you never forget your your roots look at that I think that's fantastic even look at the Holy Father he appreciates that I'm sure as well as the our cardal I think after that there will be a question by one of the uh from the Kalan Service uh and I think the name we have here is Karen Mara who will uh who scheduled to ask a question I'd like to think I think we're waiting for that to happen and and then there will be two questions one and uh from one question from the Kalan service and the other from the from the children of the Street Ministry and I think the micro phon are being put out there for at least the first one Karen Mara very interesting what they'll say and we'll bring you the audio we'll listen to what they will say to the Holy Father and the Cardinal good evening is Holiness thank you holy father for your presence Among Us I personally thank caran services for persons with disability run by Christian Brothers to take care of us Holy Father I would like to ask you one why do we have to suffer with our disability two why am I not able like others three why they suffering four is there hope for us too Holy Father Holy Father Holy Father we are truly blessed with your presence we know you love all the children be because you have taken the initiative to meet with us even though we are not helpful sometimes we are troubl us we roam around our streets and become B for others we thank the Cardinal and the art dasis for starting this ministry to help us educate and look after us I would like to ask you Holy Father why we do not have opportunities like other kids do and how we can make our El useful to make our world more beautiful and happy even if we live in abandonment and poverty are Po and uh they also will be questions that ourselves we ask why do we have to suffer and why can't we be part of uh the excitement and the enjoyment around us and for children to ask these questions th spelled their thirst their hunger their desire to be included and to be inclusive in uh in how Society uh distributes and includes them in our activities and that is why these questions uh the Holy Father himself has heard and will soon make a response and sometimes he will just speak off the cough because as the spirit moves him he will uh uh give this kind of a a response that is when the children ask questions you cannot judge what intentions that they may have or any hidden motives for such a question uh it is straightforward and as children they only say what really they feel and what is truly their their desire and that is how uh these uh children representing the kalang services and the uh children from the Street Ministry uh does represent their friends their peer groups to voice their concerns uh we look forward to hear what will be the response from his Holiness Pope Francis as he heard uh what was May called he heard them with his heart and always he been always a uh a promoter of uh the uh experience of uh compassionate to be compassionate towards others and also also to be merciful and uh uh we will see you may take up some of those responses in um the coming opportunities that he has I think at the moment uh we've heard the questions and there might be more presentations and I think U I think that will be some some sort of a response from the Holy Father but the other point I want to make is the clarity of the questions that uh the the students the kids 8 to 12 years old 8 to 10 years old the clarity of the questions that they ask was just uh just incredible very clear and they spoke the English language very well as well notably the first question was uh a mixture because of the sign language that uh aided this trial to to already be considered uh involved in conversation of interest and uh using that using the sign language to be able to to do that uh one has to learn uh the different sign languages and the other may have to learn to to interpret that in order for comprehension understanding of the language and I think uh the Holy Father listening can properly and truly understand the need of this uh uh as they acknowledge the Christian Brothers who did something to help the teachers that in their uh imparting of knowledge to use all the necessary techniques to be also inclusive to those people especially with special needs uh to imparting uh skills to read write and to count and to feel part of everyone yeah the season come [Music] Jesus yes you keep on [Music] anding [Music] [Applause] [Music] miss all day CL about CL [Music] kingom na [Music] [Applause] [Music] you keep on daning oh yes you keep [Music] on that I think that I think is a fantastic effort from the children of the Street Ministry I'm sure the Holy Father thoroughly enjoyed that the other thing about that is that uh the flags that the the kids and the the the mothers they were holding they were all representative of the country represented each province of the country so that little performance there was a contribution from every corner of papor guini and uh was demonstrated and performed by the smallest of our citizens in front of the home Holy [Music] [Music] Father and [Music] from every of and was demonstrated and pered by the small of C [Music] of that [Music] [Music] there the the Holy Father is giving a response making some sort of a statement there and being translated of course by um the clergy next to him now the reason why we cannot bring to you the full audio and it Clarity is because I think the response is not part of the coordinated program and that the system was not hooked up for that so but at least the important thing is those who are there at the hall are hearing and listening to that response and we may sometime later on down the line bring you the full context of that when we get it to hand but as it were it uh was not miked up so that we can't bring you that this is what the decision just made right there and then for the Holy Father to give a response he will be saying uh along the lines the church's commitment to integral human development especially in this case uh looking at the the needy in society and the children of the uh Street Ministry has been an initiative of the the Cardinal of PM to uh address this uh growing uh uh reality in the city uh May set for all the dases with the uh the influx of people living behind proper places is none responding is like anyone else because we are all unique in God's eyes it is not only that there is is hope for everyone as has been said but I would add that each one of us has a role and a mission in the world that no one else can fulfill even if it involves difficulties carrying out our role and Mission will also give us a great deal of joy and ways that are different for each person true we all have limitations there are some things we are good at doing there are things we struggle with or cannot do this however should not determine our happiness with which comes instead from the love we put into whatever we do give and receive the most beautiful and important thing in our lives is always to love and to welcome with open arms the love we receive from the people who love us this is so for each person no matter how or where they find themselves did you know that this is also true for the pope our joy does not depend on anything else only on love for [Music] this brings us to the second question how can we make our world more beautiful and happy for sure with the same recipe of learning day by day to love God and others with all our hearts we can also do it by trying to learn even at school all that we can and to do so in the best way possible through studying and putting our best effort into every opportunity we are given to grow improve and refine our gifts and skills have you ever seen how a cat prepares itself when it has to make a big jump first it concentrates on directing all its strength and muscles in the right direction maybe this happens quickly and we do not even notice but the cat does it we can do the same by focusing all our strength on our goal which is love for Jesus and and in him for all the brothers and sisters we meet on the way and then with new energy we can help everything and everyone to be filled with love in this sense none of us is burdensome no we are all beautiful gifts from God a treasure for one another as you all have reminded us for thank you children for this meeting thank you very much thank you all who work together in this place with love always keep this light of Love burning it is a sign of hope not only for you but for all those you meet and for our world which is sometimes so selfish and preoccupied with things that do not matter keep the light of love berning and please pray for me too [Applause] [Applause] [Music] questions that the children raised by drawing uh their attention to uh the uniqueness of each individuals and the opportunity to uh always uh work on bringing out the best of each one and to acknowledge those people who are helping us to grow in our towards our full potential and uh he continues to remind us that uh the way to go forward is to live together and to care for one another almighty God bless you the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit [Music] amen Holy Father final blessing and that concludes this formalities of this particular encounter with the uh Children of the street and the kalang services and uh he'll be soon ready to receive the gifts uh that they will present and he will be on the way on his way to the second uh uh meeting that will be for the schedule of the day so we can see the is semin uh uh Cardinal John rbat the arish of musby is doing a presentation to his Holiness as a gift and appreciation for uh his uh receiving and meeting the children of the Street Ministry and the the kalang services the children themselves now are presenting his Holiness with the the papini crash the birth of paradise I think it's on wood and these are the gifts that uh he will treasure and he does an exchange as you receive the gift from the children with the Holy Rosary is always the popular uh gift that he presents to his uh um friends who come to wish him well these children as we watch them uh coming forward and shaking hands with the Holy Father they this will treasure they will treasure this for the rest of their lives and uh it will be interesting to meet them later on in life to find out uh where they will be what they become of them as always the uh the interesting question they giving him and presenting him with a traditional condo drum that's probably one of the ones that they were dancing with so uh at least he's got one of that memorabilia he curious on the headdress well a design of the Holy Father himself how about that from the children from the kids themselves that I'm sure he will treasure that will be always fun memories of uh visiting Pap guini and uh those particular gifts that they are presenting to him will always be a reminder of this uh particular historical visits that he has uh done coming to us especially with the uh peripheries the furthest the Asia and uh Oceania continents for and that's the conclusion of the presentation or exchange of gifts between the children of the street and the Holy Father he will now is now being prepared or put on his uh uh wheelchair and we'll be just a guess and almost the next building is it not to Theon Bosco uh and there he has another program which will take another maybe half an hour 20 minutes Bishop brief us on that well now this uh particular uh encounter or meeting that he will be leaving uh the k uh uh technical school girls technical school to Don Bosco uh the uh Shrine uh will be to encounter with the the Bishops uh the priests religious and the catechists and most and the seminarians and I think the big part of this will be talking about uh the work of even ization and also uh formation uh and recognizing the cist in a particular way as you always refer to them as they are on the front line of evangelization and so it will be also one of those exciting encounters uh where he will so to speak meet the people who are really on the Frontline working and involved with our people in our the parishes uh in the dasis and uh looking at the the young people who are aspiring to to prepare themselves information to for future religious life as well as for uh the priesthood and he will also recognize the work of the CIS in particular as we make reference to the Blessed P the kakan m and uh that is always uh already he made mention of that in his uh address this morning uh showing his uh acknowledging uh the family life and what happens in family in preparing uh uh adults how they can uh uh contribute uh meaningfully to the development of the nation and this is how we see the spiritual uh Human Resources uh are being uh taken care of and uh acknowledged and encouraged yes and this also is quite significant for uh the the Cardinal uh because the uh the children for the Street Ministry is really his brainchild and for the Holy Father to come and kind of endorses what he's doing what he's done and what he will continue to do is uh is something that the kind Cardinal Sir John rbert will will remember for a while and now I think it will be a photo opportunity for uh no doubt the staff and uh and uh all some of the children in particular with the Holy Father that will be the uh the final uh event of this uh particular program uh as always we don't want to forget what took place so a memorable uh photo group photo like that uh everyone will thres especially those who will be in the in the in the photo that'll hang on the wall forever and can be hanging on the wall of the Huts yes yes at this point uh we can uh really imagine the anticipation on the other side of the fence the next uh it will be as drive around from the karidas girls uh secondary technical school and uh around the front just again just to the back and at The Shrine they will have the the next uh uh engagement and it has been will be taxing for a man of his age for since early morning this today and starting off quite uh heavy commitments yes Arch Bishop and at least this this little ceremony there is focused on the children of the children of the Street Ministry you look at the K students that are seated on the both sides all sitting there I mean the Temptation would be for some of them to come down and try and shake hands with their Holy Father but they are sitting there it's it's as as they are told as it is programmed this is a moment for the children of the Street Ministry and uh and they are all taking it in themselves from the side whereas uh Center Stage are the children of the Street Ministry yes John all these opportunities challenges really what po Francis always remind us uh when we become self obsessed we just forgot forget everyone and we so obsessed with ourselves but as you can say and you are saying let the others have their opportunity uh and give them their space absolutely and of course there's some pictures of uh the scene outside of the of the uh of the kitas um and and of course the the people people of the Baro area uh and no doubt are scaling the fences climbing the trees the branches that are near to get a glimpse to see what's going on and the Holy Father is now being led away for his next engagement which will be the final of the day and it it's been quite uh a busy one at that in the morning a church service a private church service at the Apostolic nun at uh that's the Vatican embassy at Aug Hill here in cor and then of course there was a courtesy call to the governor general of papini the Grand Chief Sir Bob D at the government house W government house kidu and then uh just hello yes hello to you [Music] the mic the mic the mic okay cardal I think they will adjust okay okay okay we're up as well good afternoon everyone now we are here to welcome our Holy Father Pope Francis to our children here the streets children and also CL children CL Services children but so our Holy Father of Francis has said in the church there is room for everyone his visit today reminds us that Jesus does not Point his finger at anyone but opens his arms and Embraces us all as we see with him on the cross Jesus never closes the door never but invites us father's arrival so as uh We've noted it will be a short uh drive out from kitas and entering back on the other side of the fence to Don Bosco yes an approach program there is uh of course a brief one there'll be a welcome remarks by uh Bishop Otto sepre he's the president of the Catholic Bishop's conference and then there is to be a testimony by a nun um sister Lona L and general there'll be a testimony there and also a testimony from uh father Emmanuel moku uh of the arch dasis of Port Mosby as well as another testimony from um a catechist and a representative from uh the Cod uh Archbishop tell us about that the uh testimony from the uh uh Lady Grace vakia she represented papini in the recent Cote on cality in Rome uh that was uh last year and uh in this particular uh C or gathering uh the Holy Father Pope Francis is uh advocating a church of uh walking together talking together and listening together to each other so he kind of open up uh the traditional uh C is always being the Bishops discussing but this time he opens up for the uh aspects of society to make a contribution and he he calls it the the C of cality is how do we uh listen to each other and how do we uh talk and how do we walk together in search of a a better future and as we've been remarking that uh this is a typical melan way Pap ninians we are so good in having to arrive in consensus we talk together before we do things uh when we don't talk we don't get involved ourselves and uh it is something that uh quite uh interestingly uh uh they heard our particular experience typically uh and we hope we don't lose sight of this that we give every opportunity to everyone in the family to express themselves we may not agree with what they are saying but at least they are able to give that space to to voice their concerns and at the end the consensus takes the upper hand where we all agree that uh we all have to do something like what a world that would be if that were like that uh and but of course it uh it doesn't become that now I think uh We've now come back to the U to the media center and as the as the holy father is making his way and those with special needs as these ones he himself saw the need when he saw the children in Port Mosby in the streets he he initiated this particular Ministry and has been faithful to promoting them and is uh is now uh giving opportunity for children to go back to the formal education and uh these children who are dancing but particularly they come from the central Province but in particular our uh Goa mountains in the D of Bara and uh most of them are living around in the settlements especially uh wada in that area near uh East Morocco but also in other settlements but I think as usual they are not they will not be only the guas who are dancing there all the other uh beer groups have joined join in with the excitement to be part of this experience that is why we are seeing a good crowd of children who are dancing The Gua dance this Gua dance is always typical uh because of the rugged mountains that uh they are pass to jump from uh spot to to sport especially when they are scaling up and down the mountains in the valleys and that you can see in the particular dance it will be something the Holy Father never seen in his life coming from South America and uh background with uh from Europe uh this is something uh quite unique and I'm glad that uh they are giving the opportunity our children they have had the opportunity not only to continue roaming the streets but at least we have to reflect in their culture and make something worthwhile of uh themselves and if you look at the the Holy Father he hasn't moved sideways or looked sideways he's absolutely focused on the kids the way they are dancing and if one of our cameras was there and listening maybe they should uh do a closeup of the Holy Father he's enjoying this look at that he's taking in every just about every step there from kid is saying they the dance reflects how they would negotiate the hills and the mountains that they move around so their dance reflects that of course of all the dances in papini every dance always uh has or says something about the environment with which all Pap nin is live in I just think that the Holy Father is completely mesmerized by [Music] [Music] this I spent years in the guys of ARA and this was a popular cycle with the dance the dance and they it's interesting that they've taken it even though they left the mountain and up in the city they still have the natural uh the natural uh feeling for the beat is there as they say you you never forget your your roots look at that I think that's fantastic look at the holy father he appreciates that I'm sure as well as the our cardal I think after that there will be a question by one of the uh from the Kalan Service uh and I think the name we have here is Karen Mara who will uh who schedul to ask a question I'd like to think I think we're waiting for that to happen and and then there will be two questions one in uh from one question from the Kalan service and the other from the from the children of the Street Ministry and I think the microphones are being put out there for at least the first one Karen Mara very interested in what they'll say and we'll bring you the audio we'll listen to what they will say to the Holy Father and the Cardinal good evening his Holiness thank you Holy Father for your presence Among Us I personally thank colan services for persons with disability run by Christian Brothers to take care of us Holy Father I would like to ask you one why do we have to suffer with our disability to two why am I not able like others three why this suffering oh is there hope for us too Holy Father Holy Father Holy Father we are truly blessed with your presence we know you love all the children be because you have taken the initiative to meet with us even though we are not helpful sometimes we are trouble makers we roam around the streets and become B for others we thank the Cardinal and the arts dases for starting this ministry to help us educate and look after us I would like to ask you all this father why we do not have opportunities like other kids do and how we can make ourselves useful to make our world more beautiful and happy even if we live in abandonment and poverty are Po and they also will be questions that ourselves we ask why do we have to suffer and why can't we be part of uh the excitement and the enjoyment around us and for children to ask these questions does spelled their thirst their hunger their desire to be included and to be inclusive in uh in how Society uh distributes and includes them in our activities and that is why these questions uh the Holy Father himself has heard and will soon make a response and sometimes he will just speak off the cough because as the spirit moves him he will uh uh give this kind of a a response that is when the children ask questions you cannot judge what intentions that they may have or any hidden motives for such a question uh it is straightforward and as children they only say what really they feel and what is truly their their desire and that is how uh this uh children representing the kalang services and the uh children from the Street Ministry uh does represent their friends their peer groups to avoid their concerns uh we look forward to hear what will be the response from his Holiness Pope Francis as he heard uh what was called he heard them with his heart and always is been always a uh a promoter of uh the uh experience of uh compassionate to be compassionate towards others and also also to be merciful and uh uh we will see you may take up some of those responses in um the coming opportunities that he has I think at the moment uh we've heard the questions and there might be more presentations I think uh I think there will be some some sort of a response from the Holy Father but the other point I want to make is the clarity of the questions that uh the the students the kids 10 years old the clarity of the questions that they ask was just uh just incredible very clear and they spoke the English language very well as well notably the first question was uh a mixure because of the sign language that uh aided this trial to to already be considered uh involved in conversation of interest and uh using that using the sign language to be able to to do that uh one has to learn uh uh the different sign languages and the other may have to learn to to interpret that in order for comprehension understanding of the language and I think uh the Holy Father listening can properly and truly understand the need of this uh uh as they acknowledge the Christian Brothers who did something to help the teachers that in their uh imp parting of knowledge to use all the necessary techniques to be also inclusive to those people especially with special needs uh to imparting uh skills to read write and to count and to feel part of everyone you me the season [Music] come you keep you [Music] [Applause] [Music] your [Music] you keep on this [Music] get [Music] you kingom na [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh yeah to you keep on missing oh yeah [Music] keep that I think that I think is a fantastic effort from the children of the Street Ministry I'm sure the Holy Father thoroughly enjoyed that the other thing about that is that uh the flags that the the kids and the the the mothers they were holding they were all representative of the country represented each province of the country so that little performance there was a contribution from every corner of Pap nugini and uh was demonstrated and performed by the smallest of our citizens in front of the Holy Father [Music] [Music] they do yes because they do a great job it's like tet a tet uh where and and they are setting up tet schools uh in many parts of papini so and and Don Bosco is already established the setup of uh the uh technological Institute to uh certain degree uh they may have uh capacities that are even beyond what the department is having in terms of government regulations and that because they are well Advanced as uh from the start it was like you have to give the best to build up your human uh uh resources and so uh they do have uh uh a lot of of opportunities uh in terms of uh technological uh formation and development yes and as the Holy Father is now wheel it's on his wheelchair and is being taken into the the the inside the complex uh those who are meeting him um are they to do with the Don Bosco Institute or are they clergy from some of the other um provinces the meeting that he will be now uh going into is a meeting that uh includes bishops priests religious and catechist and seminarians so most of them are already seed inside the shrine the building but this are thing is they are using the children to welcome him and the young people to welcome him and I think that is a a significant choice to passing on to the children and their youth they will remember this for a long time in their lives oh absolutely absolutely so you have the Cardinal himself there and with the president of The Bishop's conference the bishop of Bara Bishop sari there's a couple of Bishops working and this is a shrine from the exterior quite an impressive building there and people probably don't know that such a building such a an institution uh it's almost like University status in some of the other cities in developed countries it is heading towards that uh status that is always the challenge to align those two the state Church uh Mutual partnership for these things to move forward okay okay okay the moment they've been waiting for don't [Music] bosow there a big number of uh religious women who we find in many learning institutions like schools and health centers pastoral work working with the young people the children uh are there apart from the the priests and the religious men the catechists and of course the cemeterian and uh the Bishops themselves and of course the all the Bishops and and the priest catechist and even the sister you know they're Catholic but you have your own like house MBL yes yes yes I'm me svds and and uh I think the simple way to to uh to simplify or to understand is everybody calls thems religious congregations meaning to say that uh to for one congregation for one group to represent Jesus Christ it is too much so you just have to represent a part of him so the Francis can say Focus mainly supposed to be on the poverty of Christ the Divine word missionaries they focus on the Divine word the word that is divine that become flesh becomes one with us okay and the missionaries of a Sacred Heart focus on the Heart of Jesus so all these aspects of Christ uh there's so many but one particular congregation they say is a a gift it is a Charis to be able to focus on that and you witness to that that is why you see uh religious congregations focusing on education like the Christian Brothers the marriage brothers and then the r course have particularly uh focus on the the the youth okay okay but here because it's here at Don Bosco now so all the clergy the catechist the NS the priest from of the of their own work they are all now coming together for this event yes and as you may also uh uh understand his presence in this particular church and Shrine gives a special significance again to this historically talking speaking even like the kar school they will always put a note on this that PO Francis came and school at this particular time this were the activities that he engag in so it adds to so always talk about the Cs of Institutions as well okay and you call this a shrine yes this Shrine is dedicated to Our Lady to Mary the mother of Jesus but especially under the title of Mary Help of Christians yes so the program is set to begin I think the welcome remarks will be from the president of the Catholic Bishop's conference the first sight is the Cardinal of Tonga the one in black one in black yes uh he's joining he became a cardinal before uh our Cardinal on and again he comes from Tonga he was also appointed by uh Pope Francis together with our Cardinal yeah and he became Cardinal before us and the question was what's important about Tong we have a cardinal and why not us okay [Music] okay before the uh welcome remarks by the president of CBC um just tell me why the uh Cardinal of Tonga is in black and the rest are in white is there some significance in that actually when everybody should are in Rome everybody Bishops we wear black and apart from this it's more practical uh decision our Bishop St we are not in Rome we in so let's just we the welcome remarks by President CBC seminarians and catechist from papini and the region of Oceania I offer you a warm welcome to this Beloved Country it is a beautiful land with 800 different languages and cultures and of thousands of tribes we represent and W who are our collaborat the mission of the church we are delighted and that he travel of Kil to this part of the world the per World be with us as part of your Apostolic Journey your we are full of joy to you keep for you are the of Christ your to and in this and us individ as conf in royalty father and the well to our going entire in and Solomon welcome Holy Father we love you thank you [Applause] Holy Father pop Francis it's a on Holy Father it's a great honor to stand front you thank you very much for inviting me about Ministry the [Laughter] the House of Hope security shelter hope and healing for forgiveness and integration for those [Laughter] is breaking I think we have a little problem with the audio uh that uh I think it was uh the testimony from sister lurena and general um after the welcome by the C the president of the Catholic Bishop's conference Bishop OT sepe and then it was Sister Lorena General giving a testimony and this will be followed by another testimony from father Emmanuel moku he is from the arch dasis of Port Mosby so but on the stand there still giving the testimony sister Lorena sister Lorena is a Machinery that works in the diges of meni and as you are aware with the um uh sorcery accusation related violence she's been very uh uh active in advocating and especially protecting a lot of women were been accused and uh taken and being hurt and she advocates for them to try to educate the population uh especially around the suspicion of uh sorcery and it is a painful uh experience working with the women and that's what she dedicated her lives to and she's just sharing this as one of those pastoral uh uh challenges we have and also a Law and Order issue yes and as as if we didn't have enough problems with violence against women and this is another type of killing or another type of marginalizing uh a key and important member of the family the the the mother the female in the house and yet we've come up with uh things like sorcery that uh that is now it can become very deadly in some parts of the country and particularly some parts of the Highlands region there are reports of if ladies being killed uh accused of practicing sorcery after some of the someone dies in their Village or whatever and they blame it on her yes absolutely no basis whatsoever so she has a handful with what she has to do in the Southern Highlands she works together with the bishop of mindi uh Bishop Donal leat and now they are just sharing their particular experience of this pastoral challenge yeah she does a great work she gets a hug from the Holy Father or at least gives the Holy Father a hug whichever way she's been a missionary almost rest of the life here in papini particularly in the D of meni well there you are people giving the best of their lives in service to another country and in this is and none giving her the best of her life her economic life if you like her best life to Pap and this is another testimony from the MOs father Emmanuel moku tell me about the the testimonies what are they speeches testimonies description of what they do I think uh it boils down to as sister just did uh all uh giving a uh a a a snapshot on pastoral activity and the challenges involved and he would be his uh comment around how the catechist handles their pastoral work in the formation of people uh in the faith and so uh that's basically what he is trying to uh to share as a testimony that uh from The Experience practical challenges and experience with the working with our people in imparting the faith uh properly uh uh forming people to understand uh what especially in terms of uh living together as a human beings as made in an image and likeness of God and so uh that is what is sharing as much as the same for the first the sisters so they are basically very involved with the Practical pastoral work and what they encounter their successes but also they real challenges yes here at the the media center the uh the audio the sound we getting from Don Bosco is uh little bit noisy that is why we are talking over what the what the what the good Father's testimony is so uh we want people to understand that as soon as it's restored we'll get back to it in front of them to celebrate with the Cardinal St John St John rber I believe my service as a priest is my contribution towards the building up of the kingdom of the vineyard of God on Earth the last part of my sharing I want to share my cultural challenges in my ministry as a priest the first one the challenge of moving from a local church that has received so much to a church that is local and to provide is is a challenge to be a local church selfs sufficient sustain secondly the challenge of communicating the twofold purpose of marriage as B companionship for life and caring and of of educating the children in papini is another challenge the third challenge is the young people in Papo guine the young people are especially called The Leaders of Tomorrow they should be trained they should be cultivated they should be nurtured let them embrace the Priestly occasion of a dent priest or a religious priest that will be sa fruitful for the church and lastly my response to the constant struggle to integrate the Catholic Church faith and our cultural identity I commend from Ecclesia in oania let the face of Christ show in the culture of papini thank you very much [Music] on the beauty of uh working for serving the people but also noting the challenges that one has to overcome uh in uh working amongst the communities amongst the the people as a Catholic ch they are now uh singing a song in response to those two testimonies so far and uh I think uh as it worked out there's a religious woman which is the Lorena giving her testimony now and a priest and now they will have a followed by a catechist and these are what may you may say the three key people who are after the bishop uh takes a lot of the work uh caring for people in the work of evangelization apart from uh the delivery of those Social Services with their education and he [Music] all is to my in my heart [Music] [Music] to [Music] everything for [Music] GL my is to and my and my [Music] heart is to know and love my and F in my heart the [Music] [Laughter] Holy Father I stand here on behalf of my fellow brother catechist James atar River of the arch dasis of P MOSI I read my name is James ATA River and I am 68 years old I am from The goyala District in the central province of papoa New Guinea I am sharing my experience as a catechist I began my service as a pastoral worker in 1982 at Holy Family Parish in the arch dasis of Port MOS for 15 years I did my pastoral work and then then graduated as a full-time catechist in 1997 during my time as a catechist I have experienced good things as well as challenges I have been responsible for six zones with 10 chapels what I enjoy most about being a catechist is walking through the villages and saving the people encouraging children in the catechism and being a friend to all my main challenges are as follows the challenge of a lack of resources at times local communities have supported me with financial assistance but at other times I have to sell garden vegetables to afford what I need to do with my work effectively number two the challenge of how to travel to the distant communities within the parish currently I have to work to the further communities in order to do my pastoral Outreach third the challenge of balancing the demands of Pastor Ministry with the responsibilities of family life Number Four The Challenge of the influence of other denominations sometimes we receive criticisms and I do not want the Catholic faithful to lose their faith the fifth challenge the challenge of fewer people committing to be catechist especially the younger generation regardless of all these challenges I am happy and I enjoy what I am doing because it is for the glory of God and to win more souls for heaven I sum it up with James atara's question how can we convey the enthusiasm commission to young people thank [Applause] you the catechist Mr James Atara of thees of mby and she is prayerful greetings Holy Father Pope Francis and at this stage we'll now listen to Grace vakia who represented Papa new guini in the C on cality in Rome last year and uh she is now going to give us her testimony I return from the first session of the code in 2023 with much enthusiasm like returning from a big Feast with food to share with my family many people say that synodality is our way of life in Papo New Guinea and in the local church but as we continue to merge our melanesian way of life with other ways and IDE years we risk losing this identity the method of conversation used at the card gave me a voice to share the melanesian beauty of communial and relational way of life we in Papa New Guinea should develop and use more of such conversation methods so that the wisdom of the simple people in our feries may be heard respected and valued as the first ever lay person to be given voting rights at a Cod I long to see more men and women as partners young people Embrace their innocence and youthfulness priest and religious working together as collaborators priests being more servant likee leaders local PNG missionaries supported in their vocation lay people being active participants and decision makers as well and Christians we all Stand United at the foot of the cross of Jesus Christ finally I long for the Beauty full aspect of synodality in our melanesian way of life merge beautifully into the life of our local PNG Church change is inevitable but in PNG it is a much more slower process a process which requires patience and love Holy Father how can we share the beauty of our simple cidal way of life in in such a rapid changing world thank you papa Santo thank you for listening to us and coming to visit us participated in the C of cality a process of uh which Pope Francis invited participants from all churches throughout the world to make a contribution with the spirit of talking and listening to One Another walking together in search of uh a church that will be uh relevant to our time but also inclusive of all voices to take part in the conversation and that is how she expressed uh uh that beauty of that experience and how as melians we are very good at this uh practice we uh open up for everyone to participate in the conversation the discussions because after that everyone will contribute their food their Pig and their sing sing for any celebrations okay we now have a uh an address to to address from the Holy Father let's take that James Grace [Music] [Music] [Music] bu [Music] in Tanto car sanan bco Maria helping for [Music] dear brothers and sisters good evening I greet you all with affection bishops priests consecrated men and women seminarians and catechists I thank the president of The Bishop's conference for his words as well as James Grace sister Lorena and father Emanuel for their testimonies it is nice to be here in this church of the cians and I'm very happy to meet you in this diois and Shrine dedicated to Mary Help of Christians you know I was baptized by a cian in this church dedicated to Mary Help of Christians a title so dear to St John Bosco or Maria helam as you affectionately invoke her here in 1844 when our lady inspired Don Bosco to build a church in her honor in Torin she made him this promise here is my home from here my glory Mary promised him that if he had the courage to begin the construction of the church great Graces would then follow and so it happened the church was built it is marvelous and I must say that the church here is much nicer than the one in borides and it has and so it happened that the church was built it is marvelous and it has become a center for allowing the gospel to shine forth per forming young people and carrying out works of Charity a reference point for so many people for for [Music] [Music] the beautiful Shrine we find ourselves in now which is inspired by that story can be a symbol also for Us of three aspects of our Christian and missionary journey that were highlighted in the testimonies we just heard they are the courage to begin the beauty of being present and the hope of growing three the courage to begin the beauty of being present and the hope of growing first the courage to begin the Builders of this Shrine began their undertaking with a great Act of Faith which has born fruit yet it was only possible because of so many other courageous Beginnings by those who had gone before them missionaries arrived in this country at the middle of the 19th century and the first steps of their Ministry were not easy indeed some attempts failed they did not give up however and with great faith Apostolic Zeal and many sacrifices they continued to preach the go gospel and serve their brothers and sisters starting again many times after having failed [Music] Teresa joani paoo Mary mop Maria Francisco danan joanni Bosco Maria Dominica mazarello [Music] the the stained glass windows in the shrine remind us of this we can't see them right now but they do the sunlight Smiles on us through the faces of the Saints and blessed women and men from all backgrounds connected to the history of your community Peter Chanel John matone and Peter toot Martyrs of new guine and also Theresa of Kolkata John Paul II Mary McKillip Maria geretti laa vuna zarino namura Francis deos John Bosco Mary Dominica matello brothers and sisters who in different ways and at different times began initiatives and forged paths only to Begin Again many times over they contributed to bringing the gospel to you together with a colorful wealth of charisms animated by the spirit and the same charity of Christ and this is the life of the miss missionary to depart to come back to depart again it is thanks to them that we are here it is thanks to them to their starts and restarts that we are here and that despite the current challenges which are not lacking we continue to move forward without fear knowing that we are not alone it is the Lord who acts in us and with us making us like them instruments of his grace and that truly is our vocation to be instruments of the Lord for James comp comp in this regard and in light of what we have heard I would like to recommend an important direction for your own starts namely the peripheries of this country I think of people belonging to the most deprived segments of urban populations as well as those who live in the most remote and abandoned areas where sometimes basic necessities are lacking I think two of the marginalized and wounded both morally and physically by Prejudice and Superstition sometimes to the point of having to risk their lives as James and sister Lorena reminded us the church desires especially to be close to these brothers and sisters because in them Jesus is present in a special way and where he our head is present there are we his members for we belong to the same body joined and knit together by every ligament and please do not forget about this closeness being close to to everybody the the attitude and the ways of God consist of three behaviors compassion closeness and tenderness and we always need to remember that especially as priests and deacons and those who serve the people compassion tenderness and closeness for [Music] James Miss for for for [Music] this brings us to the second aspect the beauty of being present we can see it symbolized in the Ken shells a sign of prosperity that adorns the presbyter of this church they remind us that we are the most beautiful treasure in the eyes of the father close to Jesus and under the mantle of Mary we are spiritually United with all our brothers and sisters whom the Lord has usted trusted to us but who cannot be here ignited by the desire that the whole world may know the gospel and share in its power and light James asked how we can convey the enthusiasm for mission to young people I don't think there are techniques for that one proven way however is to cultivate and share with them our joy of being the church this is what Pope Benedict said to cultivate and share with them our joy of being the church the church a welcoming home made up a living Chosen and precious stones placed by the Lord next to each other and cemented by his love as Grace's experience of the Senate reminds us by esteeming and respecting one another and putting ourselves at the service of one another we can show everyone we meet how beautiful how beautiful it is to follow Jesus together and and Proclaim his gospel the beauty of being present then is experienced not so much at large events and moments of success but rather in the faithfulness and love with which we strive to grow together every day [Music] is [Music] for for now we come to the third and final aspect the hope of growing in this Shrine there is an interesting catechesis through images incorporating the crossing of the Red Sea and the figures of Abraham Isaac and Moses they are the patriar ARS made fruitful through faith who received a gift of numerous Offspring because they believed this is an important symbol because it also encourages us today to have confidence in the fruitfulness of our apostolate continuing to sew tiny seeds of good in the fals of the world they may seem small like a mustard seed but if we trust and do not stop scattering them by God's grace they will Sprout but the Lord's holy mother Church teaches the same thing when emphasizing that even with our own efforts God is the one who makes his kingdom come to Earth let us continue therefore to evangelize patiently without allowing ourselves to be discouraged by difficulties or misunderstandings even when they arise in places where we especially do not want to encounter them in the family for example as we have heard comp [Music] [Applause] dear brothers and sisters let us thank the Lord together for how the gospel has taken root and continues to spread in Papa New Guinea and the Solomon Islands carry on your mission as Witnesses of Courage Beauty and hope and do not forget the style of God which is closeness tenderness and compassion I thank you for what you are doing and I bless you all from my heart and I ask you please do not forget to pray for me I have need of your prayers thank [Applause] you but but pray in favor not against [Applause] okay well what did you think about that uh Archbishop um you know he spoke in three places today at the ape house and U with the uh with the children with the children of the Street Ministry but the longest is this one here to the he speaking to the Catholic Bishop's conference Pap Solomon Island and also the Catholic faith workers that's Spees a little longer and meaningful bless yes uh as he uh am Jesus holy Mary Mother of God pray for us s now and the the Lord is with you and with your spirit blessed be the name of the Lord now and forever our help is in the name of the Lord may heav may almighty God bless you the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit amen okay the Holy Father just gave a final blessing to the uh audience the congregation that is uh being there at uh uh the bti uh with the uh the shrine of Mary Help of Christian addressing the bishops priests religious and catechists and the catechists and in doing so acknowledging uh them for the work and the challenges that they have to encounter in the work of evangelization in proclaiming uh God's kingdom and I think at this point they will now have the uh Pres presentation of the gifts uh I see the bishop of Le Bishop LaToy is a multiple structured sailing water craft traditionally used in the HEI trade cycle loto are fashioned from two or more Dugout logs fashioned together to give stability and cargo carrying capacity the two or more dugouts are joined by poles with a platform built on top the sail is a crab claw sail the motans lived in a dry region because of the harsh dry season they did not have enough suitable areas for the growing of SEO on the other hand the motans unlike most people of papon yugin were skilled in the art of making clay cooking pots during the traditional hiri trade They Carried the much prized Motu cooking pots to the people of the Gulf of Papua and brought back plenty plentiful supplies of SEO for the motans the gift that we are going to present to you is a replica of one such LaToy as we present this gift to you Holy Father we humbly ask you please remember papini in your prayers for [Applause] here the locat toy presented to the Holy Father and uh he's also asked to remember papini in his prayers the last message and this time there'll be a chire and I think while that is about to take place an opportunity for the other uh Bishops to get a closeup uh acquaintance with the Holy Father he I think spoke at length about their work Archbishop uh in in in papini to talk to the Bishops about their work he talked to all the other Catholic uh Faith leaders who worked here and in that there was a mention of uh uh uh the Holy Father who had visited us before John Paul II who's now become a saint and he's also mentioned uh blessed Peter torot H who is now there is now a process under which uh he will become a a saint for this part of the region so he's acknowledging those uh uh who faithfuls whove worked uh and uh and it was U quite a statement to hear the name Peter toot mentioned of course as he um did the responses to the three uh four Witnesses and the catechists do play an important role in The Book of evangelization in the sense that the the kist represents the local communities and always work in collaboration with the the the missionaries uh the cist always been people who understood the language the culture and they receive the missionaries and assistant missionaries in their work uh and in many cases and he alluded to that also that uh uh the catechist do a lot of ground work uh in helping to prepare for the missionaries and continue to further the work of the missionaries the local contribution and uh blessed in that regard did a lot uh especially when all the missionaries were taken away during the second world war he uh was present with the people and encouraged them work with them and of course uh uphold the the teaching of Christ especially for the beauty of uh uh family life and the sacrament of marriage and the same message that is uh recurring that uh strong good families as we seen from the children that are are sometimes forgotten or neglected uh the ones in the uh Street Ministries uh as as well as uh children with uh special needs these are all issues on how to uh integrate them properly Within and our our families and uh the responsibility that uh not only the families themselves but the whole Community can stand together and uh uh work towards as you repeat over and over the work of uh being compassion towards others and to focus on the good of others and not to be always self focused and selfish yes that was the that was the message to the Catholic Bishops uh of and Solomon Islands and of course the Catholic faith leaders over there now Bishop if you can go over some of those Bishops clergy who are on the stand there they're all Arch Bishop are they are they bishops from uh as you said the one in the black there was from Tonga and several of them in Black most of the those in white our papinian Solomon Islands Bishops most of them are Pap ninians of our dases papini towards your left there is a the further left is the Cardinal of Tonga and Then followed by the emiritus bishop of raal uh my former uh successor uh predecessor and then at the be is also the Arch Bishop of uh of subba in Fiji but the rest uh I think most of our viewers will recognize their own Bishops uh Paul uh took the opportunity needed to have a h a picture taken is always the occasion that a memorable occasion you don't want to miss yeah well of course you missed that you're an Archbishop you're Archbishop of raal and an opportunity that you would have been there doing that but you are here in the studio with me doing this so unfortunately you missed that opportunity but you've been to Rome you've met him I missed that opportunity but in any case I am happy because I'm helping our viewers to understand what is happening here that's probably more important than them standing on there yes yes well it uh just about coming to the end of this particular engagement of the Holy Father today a bishy wanted that so no doubt everyone else uh uh will try and get an opportunity to shake his hand and to say goodbye to him and I think from here he retires to the uh to his uh to the Embassy to the apostolic n at an Hill at cor they may have an opportunity just to be at the front of this uh Shrine because there are people outside on the uh oh absolutely on the field he might have an opportunity he doesn't uh ignore people he might even redirect them to take him to the uh to The Veranda of the uh Shrine so he could uh at least uh show face and maybe give a blessing to those people who are not able to be in the in the shrine itself yes and just a wave to them will do they'll take that away uh feeling a sense of uh achievement sense of uh uh belonging of course of course and uh the always the uh boast his you've seen him on television and back in Rome and other places but he was here and I saw him with my own eyes yes yes and those for the no I shook hands with him okay okay well that's good that's a so you've had your opportunity let's put it this way yes yes and I think it was good that this uh other Bishops made an effort to come uh from new New Zealand and from uh Tonga from Fiji and also from uh Australia uh to be present uh with us of course when I was in Australia uh the question was uh is a pop stopping by here in Australia uh I said I do not know but uh if he true to what he's saying that he's going to those who are far off and insignificant he may Miss Australia on the periphery and Australia is not on the periphery and I think Pap Nini is on the periphery likewise oh he gets a bilum along the way he touched it so and I think his staff would probably yes oh yes and you're quite right Arch Bishop you're quite right uh there is a lot of people outside and he seems to be heading for the big door of the shrine so he can have a view of all those people who are outside on the field on the pling field that's towards the main road running to Tama yes there he is well if we if you like we could say that this is him appearing at the Basilica in in Rome and waving to the the the the followers that would come and congregate to watch him this is the I pray for you you pray for me thank you thank you very much for your presence thank you very much I will bless you God bless you w the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit bye-bye [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] that will be just as concludes the uh formalities of this particular program and uh the second for the day uh the second part for the afternoon and will be the conclusion for the day it will be as he heads towards um the other side of obviously it came to The Veranda the vantage point to say goodbye to everybody who had waited who had gathered outside and now he will be led to his little Pop mobile to head back to the apos Nuna the Vatican Embassy here in papini here in Port Mosby and there you are this just about wraps everything up for us here at the media center at the Hilton hotel in Port Mosby where just next is the will always put a note on this that Poe Francis came and visited school at this particular time this were the activities that he engaged in so it adds to so always talk about the cies of Institutions as well okay and you call this a shrine yes this Shrine is dedicated to Our Lady to Mary the mother of Jesus but especially under the title of Mary Help of Christians yes s of program is set to begin I think the welcome remarks will be from the president of the Catholic Bishop's conference the first s is the Cardinal of Tonga the one in black one in black yes uh he's joining he became Cardinal before uh our Cardinal on and again he comes from Tonga he was also appointed by uh Pope Francis together with our card yeah and he became Cardinal before us and the question was what's important about Tong if we have a cardal and why not us [Music] okay okay before the uh welcome remarks by the president of CBC um just tell me why the uh Cardinal of Tonga is in black and the rest are in white is there some significance in that actually when everybody should with I in Rome everybody Bishops we wear black and apart from this it's more practical uh decision our Bishops thought we are not in Rome we in so let's just we the welcome remarks by president of the CBC seminarians and catechist from Pap new guini and the region of oania I offer you a warm welcome to this Beloved Country it is a beautiful land with 800 different languages and cultures and of thousands of tribes we represent and woodwi who are our collaborat the mission of the church we are delighted and that he TR of to of the world the perer world with us as part of your Apostolic Journey your we are full of joy to you CH she with us for you are the of Christ above your helps to and [Laughter] and and as conf in God you are royalty father and church to our going Andel in and Solomon welcome Holy Father we love you thank you [Applause] Holy Father Francis it's a h Holy Father it's a great honor to stand in front you thank you very much inviting me Ministry the [Laughter] the House of Hope provides security shelter hope and healing for forgiveness and integration for those in [Laughter] is breaking I think we have a little problem with the audio uh that uh I think it was the testimony from Sister Lorena and general um after the Welcome by the ca the president of the Catholic Bishop's conference bishop sepe and then it was Sister Lorena General giving a testimony and this will be followed by another testimony from father Emmanuel moku he is from the AR dasis of Port Mosby stand there still giving the testimony is Sister lurena Sister Lorena is a Machinery that works in uh the dasis of meni and as you are aware with the U uh sorcery accusation related violence she's been very uh uh active in advocating and especially protecting a lot of women were been accused and uh taken and being hurt and she advocates for them to try to educate the population uh especially around the suspicion of uh sorcery and it is a painful uh experience working with the women and that's what she dedicated her lives to and she's just sharing this is one of those pastoral uh uh challenges we have and also a Law and Order issue yes and as as if we didn't have enough problems with violence against women and this is another type of killing or another type of marginalizing uh a key and important member of the family the the the mother the female in the house and yet we've come up with uh things like sorcery that uh that is now it can become very deadly in some parts of the country and particularly some parts of the Highlands region there are reports of if ladies being killed accused of practicing sorcery uh after some of the some dies in their Village or whatever and they blame it on her yes absolutely no basis whatsoever so she has a handful with what she has to do in the Southern Highlands she works together with the bishop of mindi uh Bishop uh Donald leat and now they are just sharing their particular experience of this pastoral challenge yeah she does a great work she gets a hug from the Holy Father or at least gives the Holy Father a hug whichever way she's been a missionary almost rest of the life here in papini particularly in of meni well there you are people giving the best of their lives in service to another country and in this case a none giving her the best of her life her uh economic life if you like a best life to papini and this is another testimony from the Immanuel M tell me about the testimonies what are they speeches testimonies description of what they do I think uh it boils down to as sister just did uh all uh giving a uh a a snapshot on pastoral activity and the challenges involved and he would be his uh comment around how the catechists handles their pastoral work in the formation of people uh in the faith and so uh that's basically what he is trying to uh to share as a testimony that the from The Experience practical challenges and experience with the working with our people in imparting the faith uh properly uh uh forming people to understand uh what especially in terms of uh living together as uh human beings as made in an image and likeness of God and so uh that is what he sharing as much as the same for the first the sisters so are basically very involved with practical pastoral work and what they encounter their successes but also they are real challenges yes here at the the media center the uh the audio the sound we getting from Don Bosco is uh little bit noisy that is why we are talking over what the what the what the good Father's testimony is so uh we want people to understand that as soon as it's restored we'll get back to it stood in front of them to celebrate with the Cardinal St John St John reot I believe my service as a priest is my contribution towards the building up of the kingdom of the vineyard of God on Earth the last part part of my sharing I want to share my cultural challenges in my ministry as a priest the first one the challenge of moving from a local church that has received so much to a church that is local and to provide is a challenge to be a local church self sufficient sustain secondly the challenge of communicating the twofold purpose of marriage as B companionship for life and caring and of of educating the children in papon Nini is another challenge the third challenge is the young people in Papo Guinea the young people are especially called The Leaders of Tomorrow they should be trained they should be cultivated they should be nured let them embrace the Priestly vocation of a Dian priest or a religious priest that will be sering fruitful for the church and lastly my response to the constant struggle to integrate the Catholic church Faith in our cultural identity I commend from Ecclesia in oia let the Fai of Christ show in the culture of Pap ponini thank you very much [Music] on the beauty of uh working for serving the people but also noting the challenges that one has to overcome uh in uh working amongst the communities amongst the the people as a Catholic priest they are now uh singing a song in response respond to those two testimonies so far and uh I think uh as it worked out there's a a religious woman which is the Lorena giving her testimony now and a priest and now they will have a followed by a cist and these are what may you may say the three key people who are after the bishop uh takes a lot of the work uh caring for people in the work of evangelization from uh the delivery of those Social Services with education and health [Music] all is to in my heart [Music] [Music] everything [Music] I [Music] for to and love my and in my [Music] heart my heart is to and love my and filling my the heart of is [Music] [Laughter] [Music] Holy Father I stand here on behalf of my fellow brother catechist James atar River of the arch dasis of Port MOS I read my name is James atar River and I am 68 years old I am from The goyala District in the central province of Papa new guini I am sharing my experience as a catechist I began my service as a pastoral worker in 1982 at Holy Family Parish in the arch dasis of Port MOS for 15 years I did my pastoral work and then graduated as a full-time catechist in 1997 during my time as a catechist I have experienced good things as well as challenges I have been responsible for six zones with 10 chapels what I enjoy most about being a catechist is walking through the villages and saving the people encouraging children in the catecheses and being a friend to all my main challenges are as follows the challenge over lack of resources at times local communities have supported me with financial assistance but at other times I have to sell garden vegetables to afford what I need to do with my work effectively number two the challenge of how to travel to the distant communities within the parish currently I have to work to the further communities in order to do my pastoral Outreach third the challenge of balancing the demands of Pastor Ministry with the responsibilities of family life Number Four The Challenge of the influence of other denominations sometimes we receive criticisms and I do not want the Catholic faithful to lose their faith the fifth challenge the challenge of fewer people committing to be catechist especially the younger generation regardless of all these challenges I am happy and I enjoy what I am doing because it is for the glory of God and to win more souls for heaven I sum it up with James atara's question how can we convey the enthusiasm for mission to young people thank [Applause] you the cist Mr jamesa of the of for musby and she is pray thingss Holy Father Pope Francis and at this stage we will now listen to Grace vakia who represented Papa new guini in the Cod on cality in Rome last year and uh she is now going to give us her testimony I returned from the first session of the cod in 2023 with much enthusiasm like returning from a big Feast with food to share with my family many people say that synodality is our way of life in Papa New Guinea and in the local church but as we continue to merge our melanesian way of life with other ways and ideas we risk losing this identity the method of conversation used at the Cod gave me a voice to share the melanesian beauty of communial and relational way of life we in Papa new gu should develop and use more of such conversation methods so that the wishdom of the simple people in our feries may be heard respected and valued as the first ever lay person to be given voting rights at a Cod I long to see more men and women as partners young people Embrace their innocence and youthfulness priest and religious working together as collaborators priest being more servant like leaders local PNG missionaries supported in their vocation lay people being active participants and decision makers as well and Christians we all Stand United at the foot of the cross of Jesus Christ finally I long for the Beauty full aspect of synodality in our melanesian way of life merge beautifully into the life of our local PNG Church change is inevitable but in PNG it is a much more slower process a process which requires patience and love Holy Father how can we share the beauty of our simple cidal way of life in such a rapid changing world thank you Papa s thank you for listening to us and coming to visit us participated in the C of sin nality a process of uh which Pope Francis invited participants from the churches throughout the world to make a contribution with the spirit of talking and listening to One Another walking together in search of uh a church that will be uh relevant to our time but also inclusive of all voices to take part in the conversation and that is how she expressed the uh that beauty of that experience and how as melians we are very good at this uh practice we uh open up for everyone to participate in the conversation the discussions because after that everyone will contribute their food their Pig and their sing sing for any celebrations okay we now have a uh an address to to address from the Holy Father let's take that James Grace [Music] [Music] compliment Maria chis Mar [Music] inos [Music] bu dear brothers and sisters good evening even I greet you all with affection bishops priests consecrated men and women seminarians and catechists I thank the president of the Bishop's conference for his words as well as James Grace sister Lorena and father Emmanuel for their testimonies it is nice to be here in this church of the cians and I'm very happy to meet you in this diois and Shrine dedicated to Mary Help of Christians you know I was baptized by a cian in this church dedicated to Mary Help of Christian a title so dear to St John BOS or Maria helam as you affectionately invoke her here in 1844 when our lady inspired Don BOS to build a church in her honor in Torin she made him this promise here is my home from here my glory Mary promised him that if he had the courage to begin the construction of the church great Graces would then follow and so would happen the church was built it is marvelous and I must say that the church here is much nicer than the one in borad and it has and so it happened that the church was built it is marvelous and it has become a center for allowing the gospel to shine forth for forming young people and carrying out works of Charity a reference point for so many people B for for [Music] [Music] the beautiful Shrine we find ourselves in now which is inspired by that story can be a symbol also for Us of three aspects of our Christian and missionary journey that were highlighted in the testimonies we just heard they are are the courage to begin the beauty of being present and the hope of growing three the courage to begin the beauty of being present and the hope of growing first the courage to begin the Builders of this Shrine began their undertaking with a great Act of Faith which has borne fruit yet it was only possible because of so many other courageous Beginnings by those who had gone before them missionaries arrived in this country at the middle of the 19 century and the first steps of their Ministry were not easy indeed some attempts failed they did not give up however and with great faith Apostolic Zeal and many sacrifices they continued to preach the gospel and serve their brothers and sisters starting again many times after having [Music] failed Petro Chanel Mary mop Maria Goretti laa vun sephin Francisco danan joanni Bosco Mar Dom for [Music] the stained glass windows in the shrine remind us of this we can't see them right now but they do the sunlight Smiles on us through the faces of the Saints and blessed women and men from all backgrounds connected to the history of your community Peter Chanel John matone and Peter toot Martyrs of New Guinea and also Theresa of Kolkata John Paul II Mary McKillip Maria Goretti laa vuna zarino n namura Francis deos John Bosco Mary Dominica matello brothers and sisters who in different ways and at different times began initiatives and forged paths only to Begin Again many times over they contributed to bringing the gospel to you together with a colorful wealth of charisms animated by the spirit and the same charity of Christ and this is the life of the missionary to depart to come back to depart again it is thank to them that we are here it is thanks to them to their starts and restarts that we are here and that despite the current challenges which are not lacking we continue to move forward without fear knowing that we are not alone it is the Lord who acts in us and with us making us like them instruments of his grace and that truly is our vocation to be instruments of the Lord for James m V compassion in this regard and in light of what we have heard I would like to recommend an important direction for your own starts namely the peripheries of this country I think of people belonging to the most deprived segments of urban populations as well as those who live in the most remote and abandoned areas where sometimes basic necessities are lacking I think two of the marginalized and wounded both morally and physically by Prejudice and Superstition sometimes to the point of having to risk their lives as James and sister Lorena reminded us the church desires especially to be close to these brothers and sisters because in them Jesus is present in a special way and where he our head is present there are we his members for we belong to the same body joined and knit together by every ligament and please do not forget about this closeness being close to to everybody the the attitude and the ways of God consist of three behaviors compassion closeness and tenderness and we always need to remember that especially as priests and deacons and those who serve the people compassion tenderness and closeness fr [Music] James sh [Music] Gra for this brings us to the second aspect the beauty of being present we can see it symbolized in the Ken shells a sign of prosperity that adorns the presbyter of this church they remind us that we are the most beautiful treasure in the eyes of the father close to Jesus and under the mantle of Mary we are spiritually United with all our brothers and sisters whom the Lord has entrusted to us but who cannot be here ignited by the desire that the whole world may know the gospel and share in its power and light James asked how we can convey the enthusiasm for mission to young people I don't think there are techniques for that one proven way however is to cultivate and share with them our joy of being the church this is what Pope Benedict said to cultivate and share with them our joy of being the church the church a welcoming home made up a living Chosen and precious stones placed by the Lord next to each other and cemented by his love as Grace's experience of the sinate reminds us by esteeming and respecting one another and putting ourselves at the service of one another we can show everyone we meet how beautiful how beautiful it is to follow Jesus together and Proclaim his gospel the beauty of being present then is experience not so much at large events and moments of success but rather in the faithfulness and love with which we strive to grow together every day [Music] for [Music] for for now we come to the third and final aspect the hope of growing in this Shrine there is an interesting catechesis through images incorporating the crossing of the Red Sea and the figures of Abraham Isaac and Moses they are the Patriarchs made fruitful through faith who received a gift of numerous offspring spring because they believed this is an important symbol because it also encourages us today to have confidence in the fruitfulness of our apostolate continuing to sew tiny seeds of good in the furrows of the world they may seem small like a mustard seed but if we trust and do not stop scattering them by God's grace they will Sprout yield an abundant Harvest and produce trees capable of welcoming the birds of the air St Paul reminds us that the growth of what we sow is not our own work but the Lord's holy mother Church teaches the same thing when emphasizing that even with our own efforts God is the one who makes his kingdom come to Earth let us continue therefore to evangelize patiently without allowing ourselves to be discouraged by difficulties or misunderstandings even when they arise in places where we especially do not want to encounter them in the family for example as we have heard for [Music] for dear brothers and sisters let us thank the Lord together for how the gospel has taken root and continues to spread in Papa New Guinea and the Solomon Islands carry on your mission as Witnesses of Courage Beauty and hope and do not forget the style of God which is closeness tenderness and compassion I thank you for what you are doing and I bless you all from my heart and I ask you please do not forget to pray for me I have need of your prayers thank [Applause] you but but pray in favor not against [Applause] foreign speech okay well what did you think about that uh Archbishop um you know he spoke in three places today at the Apec house and U with the uh with the children with the children of the Street Ministry but the longest is this one here to the he speaking to the Catholic Bishop's conference Pap Solomon Island and also the Catholic faith workers that speaks it a little longer and meaningful yes uh as he uh Jesus holy Mary Mother of God pray for us s now and the Lord is with you and with your spirit blessed be the name of the Lord now and forever Our Help Is In The Name Of The Lord May almighty God bless you the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit amen the Holy Father just give a final blessing to the uh audience the congregation that is uh being there at uh uh the bti uh with the uh the shrine of Mary Help of Christian addressing the bishops priests religious and catechis and the catechists and in doing so acknowledging uh them for the work and the challenges that they have to encounter in the work of evangelization in proclaiming uh God's kingdom and I think at this point they will now have the uh presentation of the gifts uh I see the bishop of uh Le Bop elato is a multiple structured sailing water craft traditionally used in the HEI trade cycle loto are fashioned from from two or more Dugout logs fashioned together to give stability and cargo carrying capacity the two or more dugouts are joined by poles with a platform built on top the sail is a crab claw sail the motans lived in a dry region because of the harsh dry season they did not have enough suitable areas for the growing of SEO on the other hand the motans unlike most people of papon Yia were skilled in the art of making clay cooking pots during the traditional hiri trade They Carried the much prized Motu cooking pots to the people of the Gulf of Papua and brought back plentiful supplies of SEO for the motans the gift that we are going to present to you is a replica of one such LaToy as we present this gift to you Holy Father we we humbly ask you please remember papini in your prayers [Applause] he the loat toy presented to the Holy Father and uh he's also asked to remember pap in his prayers the last message and this time there'll be a choir and I think while that is about to take place an opportunity for the other uh Bishops to get a closeup uh acquaintance with the Holy Father he I think spoke at length about their work uh Archbishop uh in in in papini talked to the Bishops about their work he talked to all the other Catholic uh Faith leaders who worked here and in that there was a mention of uh uh uh the Holy Father who had visited us before John Paul II who's now become a saint and he's also mentioned uh blessed Peter torot uh who is now there is now a process under which uh he will be become a a saint for this part of the region so he's acknowledging those uh who faithfuls who've worked uh and uh and it was U quite a statement to hear the name Peter toot mentioned of course he um did the responses to the three uh four Witnesses and the catechists do play an important role in the work of evangelization in the sense that the cist represents the local communities and always work in collaboration with the the missionaries uh the K always been people who understood the language the culture and they receive the missionaries and assistant missionaries in their work uh and in many cases and he alluded to that also that uh uh the catechist do uh a lot of ground work uh in helping to prepare for the missionaries and continue to further the work of the missionaries the local contribution and uh blessed in that regard did a lot uh especially when all the missionaries were taken away during the second world war he was present with the people and encouraged them work with them and of course was uh uphold the the teaching of Christ especially for the beauty of uh uh family life and uh sacrament of marriage and the same message that is uh recurring that uh strong good families as we seen from the children that uh are sometimes forgotten or neglected uh the ones in the uh Street Ministries uh as as well as uh children with uh special needs these are all issues on how to uh integrate them properly within our our families and the responsibility that not only the families themselves but the whole Community can stand together and uh uh work towards as you repeat over and over the work of uh being compassion towards others and to focus on the good of others and not to be always self focus and selfish yes that was the that was the message to the Catholic Bishops uh of papini and Solomon Islands and of course the Catholic faith leaders over there now Bishop if you can go over some of those Bishops clergy who are on the stand there they're all Arch Bishop are they are they bishops from uh as you said the one in the black there was from Tonga and several of them in Black most of the those who inite our papinian Solomon Island Bishops most of them are Pap ninians of our ders in papini towards your left there is a the further left is the Cardinal of Tonga and Then followed by the emiritus AR Bishop of raal uh my former uh successor uh predecessor and then at the B is also the Arch Bishop of uh of Suba in Fiji but the rest uh I think most of our viewers will recognize their own Bishops uh Paul uh took the opportunity to have a h a picture taken is always the occasion that a memorable occasion you don't want to miss yeah well of course you missed that you're an Archbishop you're Archbishop of raal and an opportunity that uh you would have been there doing that but you are here in the studio with me doing this so unfortunately you missed that opportun but you've been to Rome you've met him I missed that opportunity but in any case I am happy because I'm helping our viewers to understand what is happening here that's probably more important job it's like tet a tet uh where and and they are setting up tet schools uh in many parts of papini so and and Don Bosco is already established the setup of uh the uh technological Institute to a certain degree uh they may have uh capacities that are even beyond what the department is having in terms of government regulations and that because they are well advances uh from the start it was like you have to give the best to build up your human uh uh resources and so uh they do have uh uh a lot of of opportunities uh in terms of uh technological formation and development yes and as as the Holy Father is now wheel his onest wheelchair and is being taken into the the the inside the complex uh those who are meeting him um are they to do with the Don Bosco Institute or are they clergy from some of the other um provinces the meeting that that he will be now uh going into is a meeting that uh includes bishops priests religious and catechists and seminarians so most of them are already seated inside the shrine the building but these are thing is they are using the children to welcome him and the young people to welcome him and I think that is a a significant choice to passing on to the children and their youth they will remember this for a long time in their lives oh absolutely absolutely so you have the Cardinal himself there and with the president of The Bishop's conference the bishop of Bara Bishop saari there a couple of Bishops working and this is a shrine from the exterior quite an impressive building there and people probably don't know that such a building is such a an institution uh it's almost like University status in some of the other cities in developed countries it is heading towards that uh status it is always the challenge to align those two the state Church uh Mutual partnership for these things to move forward okay okay okay the moment they've been waiting for Don [Music] BOS yes a big number of uh religious women who we find in many learning institutions like school and health centers pastoral work working with the young people the children uh are there apart from the the priests and the religious men the catechists and of course the cians and uh the Bishops themselves and of course the all the Bishops and and the priest Cath and even the sisters you know they're Catholic but you have your own like house mon all yes yes yes I mean svds and and I think the simple way to to uh to simplify or to understand is everybody calls thems religious congregations meaning to say that uh to for one congregation for one group to represent Jesus Christ it is too much so you just have to represent a part of him so the Francis can say Focus mainly supposed to be on the PO y of Christ the Divine word missionaries they focus on the Divine word the word that is divine that become flesh becomes one with us okay and the missionaries of a Sacred Heart focus on the Heart of Jesus so all these aspects of Christ uh there so many but one particular congregation they say is a a gift it is a charish to be able to focus on that and you witness to that that is why you see uh religious congregations focusing on education like the Christian Brothers the marish brothers and then the Ros have particularly uh focus on the the youth okay okay but here because it's here at Don Bosco now so all the clergy the catechist the N the priest from of the of their own work they are all now coming together for this event yes and as you may also uh uh understand his presence in this particular church and Shrine gives a special significance again to this historically talking speaking even like the Karan school they will always put a note on this that PO Francis came and visited school at this particular time this were the activities that he engag in so it adds to so we talk about the TVs of Institutions as well okay and you call this a shrine yes this Shrine is dedicated to Our Lady to Mary the mother of Jesus but especially under the title of Mary Help of Christians yes so the program is set to begin I think the welcome remarks will be from the president of the Catholic Bishop's conference The Far Side is the Cardinal of Tonga the one in black and in Black yes uh he's joining he became a cardinal before uh our Cardinal on and again he comes from Tonga he was also appointed by uh Pope Francis together with our card yeah and he became Cardinal before us and the question was what's important about have a cardal and why not us [Music] okay okay before the uh welcome remarks by the president of CBC um just tell me why the uh Cardinal of Tonga is in black and the rest are in white is there some significance in that actually when everybody should are in Rome everybody only bishops we wear black back and apart from this it's more practical uh decision our Bishop thought we are not in Rome we in so let's just we the welcome remarks by President CBC seminarians and catechists from papini and the region of Oceania I offer you a warm welcome to this Beloved Country it is a beautiful land with 800 different languages and cultures and of thousands of tribes we represent and W who are our collaborat the mission of the church we are delighted and that you travel of Kil to this part of the royalty father and the to our going entire evation in and Solomon welome Holy Father we love you thank [Applause] you Holy Father pop Francis it's a on Holy Father it's a great honor to stand front you thank you very much for inviting me Ministry The House [Laughter] of the House of Hope security shelter hope and healing for forgiveness and integration for those [Laughter] is breaking I think we have a little problem with the audio uh that uh I think I think it was the testimony from Sister Lorena and general um after the Welcome by the ca the president of the Catholic Bishop's conference Bishop OT sepre and then it was Sister Lorena General giving a testimony and this will be followed by another testimony from father Emmanuel moku he is from the arch dasis of P Mosby so but on the stand there still giving the testimonies sister Lorena sister Lorena is a machinary that works in uh the dasis of meni and as you are aware with the um uh sorcery accusation related violence she's been very uh uh active in advocating and especially protecting a lot of women were been accused and uh taken and being hurt and she advocates for them to try to educate the population uh especially around the suspicion of uh sorcery and it is a painful uh experience working with the women and that's what she dedicated her lives to and she's just sharing this as one of those pastoral uh uh challenges we have and also a Law and Order issue yes and as as if we didn't have enough problems with violence against women and this is another type of killing or another type of marginalizing uh a key and important member of the family the the the mother the female in the house and yet we've come up with uh things like sorcery that uh that is now it can become very deadly in some parts of the country and particularly some parts of the Highlands region there are reports of if ladies being killed accused of practicing sorcery after some of the someone dies in their Village or whatever and they blame it on her yes absolutely no basis whatsoever so she has a handful with what she has to do in the Southern Highlands she works together with the bishop of mindi uh Bishop uh Donal leat and now they are just sharing their particular experience of this pastoral challenge yeah she does a great work she gets a hug from the Holy Father or at least gives the Holy Father a hug whichever way she's been a missionary almost rest of the life here in papini particularly in well there you are people giving the best of their lives in service to another country and in this case a nan giving her the best of her life her economic life if you like her best life to Pap Nini and this is another testimony from the father Emmanuel moku tell me about the the testimonies what are they speeches testimonies description of what they do I think uh it boils down to as sister just did uh all uh giving a uh a a a snapshot on pastoral activity and the challenges involved and he would be his comment around how the catechist handles their pastoral work in the formation of people uh in the faith and so uh that's basically what he is trying to uh to share as a testimony that uh from The Experience practical challenges and experience with the working with our people in imparting the faith uh properly uh uh forming people to understand uh what especially in terms of uh living together as a human beings as made in an image and likeness of God and so uh that is what is sharing as much as the same for the first the sisters so they are basically very involved with practical pastoral work and what they encounter they successes but also they real challenges yes here at the the media center the uh the audio the sound we're getting from Don Bosco is uh little bit noisy that is why we are talking over what the what the what the good Father's testimony is so uh we want people to understand that as soon as it's restored we'll get back to it in front of them to celebrate with the Cardinal St John St John reot I believe my service as a priest is my contribution towards the building up of the kingdom of the vineyard of God on Earth the last part of my sharing I want to share my cultural challenges in my ministry as a priest the first one the challenge of moving from a local church that has received so much to a church that is local and to provide is a challenge to be a local church self-sufficient sustain secondly the challenge of communicating the twofold purpose of marriage as has B companionship for life and caring and of of educating the children in papini is another challenge the third challenge is the young people in papini the young people are especially called The Leaders of Tomorrow they should be trained they should be cultivated they should be natured let them embrace the Priestly vocation of a Dian priest or a religious PRI that will be S fruitful for the church and lastly my response to the constant struggle to integrate the Catholic Church faith and our cultural identity I commend from Ecclesia in oania let the facei of Christ show in the culture of Pap Pini thank you very much [Music] on the beauty of uh working for serving the people but also noting the challenges that one is to overcome uh in uh working amongst the communities amongst the the people as a Catholic preach they are now uh singing a song in response to those two testimonies so far and uh I think uh as it worked out there's a a religious woman which is the Lorena giving her testimony and a priest and now they will have a a followed by a catechist and these are what may you may say the three key people who are after the bishop uh takes a lot of the work uh caring for people in the work of evangelization apart from uh the delivery of those Social Services with the education and health [Music] with is to my in my heart [Music] [Music] everything for GL [Music] and my and my heart the of [Music] all my heart is to know and love my Lord and heart [Music] [Laughter] [Music] Holy Father I stand here on behalf of my fellow brother catechist James atar River of the arch dases ofos I read my name is James atar River and I am 68 years old I am from The goala District in the central province of papoa New Guinea I am sharing my experience as a catechist I began my service as a pastoral worker in 1982 at Holy Family Parish in the arch dasis of Port MOS for 15 years I did my pastoral work and then graduated as a full-time catechist in 1997 during my time as a catechist I have experienced good things as well as challenges I have been responsible for six zones with 10 Chapel what I enjoy most about being a catechist is walking through the villages and serving the people encouraging children in the catechesis and being a friend to all my main challenges are as follows the challenge of a lack of resources at times local communities have supported me with financial assistance but at other times I have to sell garden vegetables to afford what I need to do with my work effectively number two the challenge of how to travel to the distant communities within the parish currently I have to work to the further communities in order to do my pastoral Outreach third the challenge of balancing the demands of pastoral Ministry with the responsibilities of family life Number Four The Challenge of the influence of other denominations sometimes we receive criticisms and I do not want the Catholic faithful to lose their faith the fifth challenge the challenge of fewer people committing to be catechist especially the younger generation regardless of all these challenges I am happy and I enjoy what I am doing because it is for the glory of God and to win more souls for heaven I sum it up with James atara's question how can we convey the enthusiasm for mission to young people thank [Applause] you the catechist uh Mr jamesa of the of mby and she is prayerful greetings Holy Father pop FR and at this stage we will now listen to Grace vakia who represented Papa new guini in the Cod on cality in Rome last year and uh she is now respons give us testimony I returned from the first session of the cnode in 2023 with much enthusiasm like returning from a big Feast with food to share with my family many people say that synodality is our way of life in Papa New Guinea and in the local church church but as we continue to merge our melanesian way of life with other ways and ideas we risk losing this identity the method of conversation used at the Cod gave me a voice to share the melanesian beauty of communial and relational way of life we in Papa New Guinea should develop and use more of such conversation methods so that the wisdom of the simple people in our feries may be heard respected and valued as the first ever lay person to be given voting rights at a Cod I long to see more men and women as partners young people Embrace their innocence and youthfulness Priests and religious working together as collaborators priests being more servant likee leaders local PNG missionaries supported in their vocation lay people being active participants and decision makers as well and Christians we all all Stand United at the foot of the cross of Jesus Christ finally I long for the Beauty full aspect of synodality in our melanesian way of life merge beautifully into the life of our local PNG Church change is inevitable but in PNG it is a much more slower process a process which requires patience and love love Holy Father how can we share the beauty of our simple cidal way of life in such a rapid changing world thank you papa Santo thank you for listening to us and coming to visit us participated in the Cod of cality a process of uh which Pope Francis invited participants from all churches throughout the world to make a contribution with the spirit of talking and listening to One Another walking together in search of a church that will be uh relevant to our time but also inclusive of all voices to take part in the conversation and that is how she expressed uh uh that beauty of that experience and how as melians we are very good at this uh practice we uh open open up for everyone to participate in the conversation the discussions because after that everyone will contribute their food their Pig and their sing sing for any celebrations okay we now have a uh an address to to address from the Holy Father let's take that James gracea [Music] [Music] Mano Christian marilia TR [Music] in TI Tanto car sanan Maria [Music] dear brothers and sisters good evening even I greet you all with affection bishops priests consecrated men and women seminarians and catechists I thank the president of The Bishop's conference for his words as well as James Grace sister Lorena and father Emanuel for their testimonies it is nice to be here in this church of the cians and I'm very happy to meet you in this diois and Shrine dedicated to Help of Christians you know I was baptized by a cian in this church dedicated to Mary Help of Christians a title so dear to St John bosow or Maria helam as you affectionately invoke her here in 1844 when our lady inspired Don BOS to build a church in her honor in Torin she made him this promise here is my home from here my glory Mary promised him that if he had the courage to begin the construction of the church great Graces would then follow and so would happen the church was built it is marvelous and I must say that the church here is much nicer than the one in borides and it has and so it happened that the church was built it is marvelous and it has become a center for allowing ing the gospel to shine forth for forming young people and carrying out works of Charity a reference point for so many people Miss for [Music] [Music] the beautiful Shrine we find ourselves in now which is inspired by that story can be a symbol also for Us of three aspects of our Christian and missionary journey that were highlighted in the testimonies we just heard they are the courage to begin the beauty of being present and the hope of growing three the courage to begin the beauty of being present and the hope of growing first the courage to begin the Builders of this Shrine began their undertaking with a great Act of Faith which has borne fruit yet it was only possible because of so many other courageous Beginnings by those who had gone before them missionaries arrived in this country at the middle of the 19th century and the first steps of their Ministry were not easy indeed some attempts failed they did not not give up however and with great faith Apostolic Zeal and many sacrifices they continued to preach the gospel and serve their brothers and sisters starting again many times after having failed [Music] Joan Teresa joanni Pao Mary mop Maria GTI La SE Francisco danan joanni Bosco Maria Dominica mazarello [Music] for for the stained glass windows in the shrine remind us of this we can't see them right now but they do the sunlight Smiles on us through the faces of the Saints and blessed women and men from all backgrounds connected to the history of your community Peter Chanel John matone and Peter torot Martyrs of new guine and also Theresa of Kolkata John Paul II Mary McKillip Mar GTI laa vuna zarino namura Francis deos John Bosco Mary Dominica matello brothers and sisters who in different ways and at different times began initiatives and forged paths only to Begin Again many times over they contributed to bringing the gospel to you together with a colorful wealth of charisms animated by the spirit and the same charity of Christ and this is the life of the missionary to depart to come back to depart again it is thanks to them that we are here it is thanks to them to their starts and restarts that we are here and that despite the current challenges which are not lacking we continue to move forward without fear knowing that we are not alone it is the Lord who acts in us and with us making us like them instruments of his grace and that truly is our vocation to be instruments of the Lord pH James V comp in this regard and in light of what we have heard I would like to recommend an important direction for your own starts namely the peripheries of this country I think of people belonging to the most deprived segments of urban populations as well as those who live in the most remote and abandoned areas where sometimes basic necessities are lacking I think two of the marginalized and wounded both morally and physically by Prejudice and Superstition sometimes to the point of having to risk their lives as James and sister Lorena reminded us the church desires especially to be close to these brothers and sisters because in them Jesus is present in a special way and where he our head is present there are we his members for We Belong to the same body joined and knit together by every ligament and please do not forget about this closeness being close to to everybody the the attitude and the ways of God consist of three behaviors compassion closeness and tenderness and we always need to remember that especially as priests and deacons and those who serve the people compassion tenderness and closeness p [Music] for luch jamesa C for for [Music] this brings us to the second aspect the beauty of being present we can see it symbolized in the Ken shells a sign of prosperity that adorns the presbyter of this church they remind us that we are the most beautiful treasure in the eyes of the father close to Jesus and under the mantle of Mary we are spiritually United with all our brothers and sisters whom the Lord has entrusted to us but who cannot be here ignited by the desire that the whole world may know the gospel and share in its power and light James asked how we can convey the enthusiasm for mission to young people I don't think there are techniques for that one proven way however is is to cultivate and share with them our joy of being the church this is what Pope Benedict said to cultivate and share with them our joy of being the church the church a welcoming home made up a living Chosen and precious stones placed by the Lord next to each other and cemented by his love as Grace's experience of the Senate reminds us by esteeming and respecting one another and putting ourselves at the service of one another we can show everyone we meet how beautiful how beautiful it is to follow Jesus together and Proclaim his gospel the beauty of being present then is experienced not so much at large events and moments of success but rather in the faithfulness and love with which we strive to grow together every day [Music] is [Music] for for now we come to the third and final aspect the hope of growing in this Shrine there is an interesting catechesis through images incorporating the crossing of the Red Sea and the figures of Abraham Isaac and Moses they are the Patriarchs made fruitful through faith who received a gift of numerous Offspring because they believed this is an important symbol because it also encourages us today to have confidence in the fruitfulness of our apostate continuing to sew tiny seeds of good in the fals of the world they may seem small like a mustard seed but if we trust and do not stop scattering them by God's grace they will Sprout yield an abundant Harvest and produce trees capable of welcoming the birds of the air St Paul reminds us that the growth of what we seow is not our own work but the Lord's holy mother Church teaches the same thing when emphasizing that even with our own efforts God is the one who makes his kingdom come to Earth let us continue therefore to evangelize patiently without allowing ourselves to be discouraged by difficulties or misunderstandings even when they arise in places where we especially do not want to encounter them in the family for example as we have heard V [Music] [Applause] dear brothers and sisters let let us thank the Lord together for how the gospel has taken root and continues to spread in Papa New Guinea and the Solomon Islands carry on your mission as Witnesses of Courage Beauty and hope and do not forget the style of God which is closeness tenderness and compassion I thank you for what you are doing and I bless you all from my heart and I ask you please do not forget to pray for me I have need of your prayers thank [Applause] you but but pray in favor not against [Applause] okay well what did you think about that uh AR Bishop um you know he spoke in three places today at the apek house and well uh with the uh with the children with the children of the Street Ministry but the longest is this one here to the he speaking to the Catholic Bishop's conference Pap Solomon Island and also the Catholic faith workers that Spees a little longer and meaningful bless yes uh as he uh Jesus Hool Mary Mother of God pray for our Sinn now and the the Lord is with you and with your spirit blessed be the name of the Lord now and forever our help is in the name of the Lord May heav and may almighty God bless you the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit amen okay the Holy Father just gave a final blessing to the uh audience the congregation that is uh being there at uh uh dbti uh with the uh the shrine of Mary Help of Christian addressing the bishop priests religious and catechis and the catechists and in doing so acknowledging them for the work and the challenges that they have to encounter in the work of evangelization in proclaiming uh God's kingdom and I think at this point they will now have the uh presentation to of the gifts uh I see the bishop of uh Le Bishop to is a multiple structured sailing water craft traditionally used in the HEI trade cycle loto are fashioned from two or more Dugout logs fashioned together to give stability and cargo carrying capacity the two or more dugouts are joined by poles with a platform built on top the sail is a crab claw sail the motans lived in a dry region because of the harsh dry season they did not have enough suitable areas for the growing of SEO on the other hand the motans unlike most people of papon Yia were skilled in the art of making clay cooking pots during the traditional hiri trade They Carried the much prized Motu cooking pots to the people of the Gulf of Papua and brought back plentiful supplies of SEO for the moans the gift that we are going to present to you is a replica of one such LaToy as we present this gift to you Holy Father we humbly ask you please remember Pap yini in your [Applause] prayers for here the loat toy presented to the Holy Father and uh he's also asked to remember Pap nugini in his prayers the last message and this time there'll be a choir and I think while that is about to take place an opportunity for the other Bishops to get a closeup uh acquaintance with the Holy Father he I think spoke at length about their work Archbishop uh in in in papini talk to the Bishops about their work he talked to all the other Catholic uh Faith leaders who worked here and in that there was a mention of uh uh uh the Holy Father who had visited before John Paul II who's now become a saint and he's also mentioned uh blessed Peter torot H who is now there is now a process under which uh he will become a a saint for this part of the region so he's acknowledging those uh uh who faithfuls whove worked uh and uh and it was U quite a statement to hear the name Peter torot mentioned of course as he um did the responses to the three uh four Witnesses and the catechists do play an important role in The Book of evangelization in the sense that the cist represents the local communities and always work in collaboration with the the missionaries uh the K is always been people who understood the language the culture and they receive the missionaries and assistant missionaries in their work uh and in many cases and he alluded to that also that uh uh the catechist do a lot of ground work uh in helping to prepare for the missionaries and continue to further the work of the missionaries the local contribution and uh blessed the in that regard did a lot uh especially when all the missionaries were taken away during the second world war he was present with the people and encouraged them work with them and of course uh uphold the the teaching of Christ especially for the beauty of uh uh family life and uh sacrament of marriage and the same message that is uh recurring that uh strong good families as we seen from the children that are sometimes forgotten or neglected uh the ones in the uh Street Ministries uh as as well as uh children with uh special needs these are all issues on how to uh integrate them properly within our our families and uh the responsibility that the not only the families themselves but the whole Community can stand together and uh uh work towards as you repeat over and over the work of uh being compassion towards others and to focus on the good of others and not to be always self focused and selfish yes that was the that was the message to the Catholic Bishops of Po and Solomon Islands and of course the Catholic faith leaders over there now Bishop if you can go over some of those uh Bishop Bishops clergy who are on the stand there they're all Arch Bishop are they are they bishops from uh as you said the one in the black there was from Tonga and several of them in Black most of the those in white our papinian Solomon Islands Bishops most of them are Pap ninians of our dases in papini towards your left there is a the further left is the Cardinal of Tonga uh and Then followed by the emiritus AR Bishop of raal uh my former uh successor uh predecessor and then at the B is also the Arch Bishop of uh of subba in Fiji but the rest uh I think most of our viewers will recognize their own Bishops uh Paul uh took the opportunity to have a uh a picture taken is always the occasion that the a memorable occasion you know you don't want to miss yeah well of course you missed that you're an Archbishop uh you're Archbishop of raal and an opportunity that you would have been there doing that but you are here in the studio with me doing this so unfortunately you missed that opportunity but you've been to Rome you've met him I missed that opportunity but in any case I am happy because I'm helping our viewers to understand what is happening here that's probably more important job it's like tet a tet uh where and and they are setting up tet schools uh in many parts of papini so and and Don Bosco is already established the setup of uh the uh technological Institute to a certain degree uh they may have uh capacities that are even beyond what the department is having in terms of government regulations and that because they are well Advanced as a from the start it was like you have to give the best to build up your human uh uh resources and so uh they do have uh uh a lot of of opportunities uh in terms of uh technological formation and development yes and as as the Holy Father is now will is on his wheelchair and is being taken into the the the inside the complex uh those who are meeting him um are they to do with the Don Bosco Institute or are they clergy from some of the other um provinces the meeting that he will be now uh going into is a meeting that uh includes bishops priests religious and catechists and seminarians so most of them are already seed inside the shrine the building but this uh thing is they are using the children to welcome him and the young people to welcome him and I think that is a a significant choice to passing on to the children and their youth they will remember this for a long time in their lives oh absolutely absolutely so you have the Cardinal himself there and uh with the president of The Bishop's conference the bishop of b bishopi as a couple of Bishops working and this is a shrine from the exterior quite an impressive building there and people probably don't know that such a building such a an institution uh it's almost like University status in some of the other cities in developed countries it is heading towards that uh status I this always the challenge to align those two the state Church uh Mutual partnership for these things to move forward okay okay okay the moment they've been waiting for Don Bosco there a big number of uh religious women who we find in many learning institutions like schools and health centers pastoral work working with the young people the children uh are there apart from the the priests and the religious men the catechists and of course the seminarians and and uh the Bishops themselves and of course the all the Bishops and and the priest catechist and even the sisted you know they're Catholic but you have your own like house M yes yes yes I mean svds and and uh I think the simple way to to uh to simplify or to understand is everybody calls thems religious congregations meaning to say that uh to for one congregation for one group to represent Jesus Christ it is too much so you just have to represent a part of him so the Francis can say Focus mainly supposed to be on the poverty of Christ the Divine word missionaries they focus on the Divine word the word that is divine that become flesh becomes one with us okay and the missionaries of a Sacred Heart focus on the Heart of Jesus so all these aspects of Christ there so many but one particular congregation they say is a a gift it is a Char to be able to focus on that and you witness to that that is why you see uh religious congregations focusing on education like the Christian Brothers the marage brothers and then the r have particularly uh focus on the the youth okay okay but here because it's here at Don Bosco now so all the clergy the catechist the nuns the priests [Music] from of the of their own work they are all now coming together for theath yes and as you may also uh uh understand his presence in this particular church and Shrine gives a special significance again to this historically talking speaking even like the kar school they will always put a note on this that PO Francis came and vised school at this particular time this were the activities that he engag in so it adds to so always talk about the CVS of Institutions as well okay and you call this a shrine yes this Shrine is dedicated to Our Lady to Mary the mother of Jesus but especially under the title of Mary Help of Christians yes so the program is set to begin I think the welcome remarks will be from the president of the Catholic Bishop's conference The Far Side is the Cardinal of Tonga the one in black one in black yes uh he's joining he became Cardinal before uh our Cardinal on and again he comes from Tonga he was also appointed by uh Pope Francis together with our c yeah and he became Cardinal before us and the question was what's important about Tong to have a cardinal and why not us [Music] okay okay before the uh welcome remarks by the president of CBC um just tell me why the uh Cardinal of Tonga is in black and the rest are in white is there some significance in that actually when everybody should are in Rome everybody Bishops we wear black and apart from this it's more practical uh decision our Bishops thought we are not in Rome we in so let's just please the welcome remarks by president of the CBC seminarians and catechists from Papo new guini and the region of Oceania I offer you a warm welcome to this Beloved Country it is a beautiful land with 800 different languages and cultures and of thousands of tribes we represent C and woodwi who are our collaborat the mission of the church we are delighted and that TR of K to part of the world the per of the world be with us as part of your Apostolic Journey your we are full of joy to you our CH shepher with us for you are the of Christ your helps to and and in this and us indid as confir our in royalty to you father and CH well to our going enti evation inini and Solomon welcome Holy Father we love you thank you [Applause] Holy Father Pope Francis it's a [Music] on Holy Father it's a great honor to stand front thank you very much for inviting me about Ministry the [Laughter] house the House of Hope provides security shelter hope and healing forgiveness and integration for [Laughter] those is breaking I think we have a little problem with the audio uh that uh I think it was uh the testimony from Sister Lauren and general um after the Welcome by the ca the president of the Catholic Bishop's conference bishop sepre and then it was Sister Laura Rea General giving a testimony and this will be followed by another testimony from father Emmanuel moku he is from the AR dasis of Port Mosby so but on the stand there still giving the testimony sister Rome last year and uh she is now respons going to give us testimony father I returned from the first session of the cod in 2023 with much enthusiasm like returning from a big Feast with with food to share with my family many people say that synodality is our way of life in Papa New Guinea and in the local church but as we continue to merge our melanesian way of life with other ways and ideas we risk losing this identity the method of conversation used at the Cod gave me a voice to share the melanesian beauty of communial and relational way of life we in Papa New Guinea should develop and use more of such conversation methods so that the wisdom of the simple people in our feries may be heard respected and valued as the first ever lay person to be given voting rights at a Cod I long to see more men and women as partners young people Embrace their innocence and youthfulness Priests and religious working together as collaborators priest being more servant likee leaders local PNG missionaries supported in their vocation lay people being active participants and decision makers as well and Christians we all Stand United at the foot of the cross of Jesus Christ finally I long for the beautyful aspect of synodality in our melanesian way of life merge beautifully into the life of our local PNG Church change is inevitable but in PNG it is a much more slower process a process which requires patience and love Holy Father how can we share the beauty of our simple cidal way of life in such a rapid changing world thank you papa Santo thank you for listening to us and coming to visit us participated in the Cod of cality a process of uh which for Francis invited participants from the churches throughout the world to make a contribution with the spirit of talking and listening to One Another walking together in search of uh a church that will be uh relevant to our time but also inclusive of all voices to take part in the conversation and that is how she expressed uh uh that beauty of that experience and how as melians we are very good at this uh practice we uh open up for everyone to participate in the conversation the discussions because after that everyone will contribute their food their Pig and their sing sing for any celebrations okay we now have a uh an address to to address from the Holy Father let's take that James graceu [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] p Mar [Music] buenos dear brothers and sisters good evening even I greet you all with affection bishops priests consecrated men and women seminarians and catechists I thank the president of The Bishop's conference for his words as well as James Grace sister Rea and father Emanuel for their testimonies it is nice to be here in this church of the cians and I'm very happy to meet you in this diois and Shrine dedicated to Mary Help of Christians you know I was baptized by a cian in this church dedicated to Mary Help of Christians a title so dear to St John bosow or Maria hel him as you affectionately invoke her here in 1844 when our lady inspired Don Bosco to build a church in her honor in Torin she made him this promise here is my home from here my glory Mary promised him that if he had the courage to begin the construction of the church great Graces would then follow and so it happened the church was built it is marvelous and I must say that the The church here is much nicer than the one in borides and it has and so it happened that the church was built it is marvelous and it has become a center for allowing the gospel to shine forth for forming young people and carrying out works of Charity a reference point for so many people SP for [Music] [Music] Miss for the beautiful Shrine we find ourselves in now which is inspired by that story can be a symbol also for Us of three aspects of our Christian and missionary journey that were highlighted in the testimonies we just heard they are the courage to begin the beauty of being present and the hope of growing three the courage to begin the beauty of being present and the hope of growing first the courage to begin the Builders of this Shrine began their undertaking with the great Act of Faith which has borne fruit yet it was only possible because of so many other courageous Beginnings by those who had gone before them missionaries arrived in the this country at the middle of the 19th century and the first steps of their Ministry were not easy indeed some attempts failed they did not give up however and with great faith Apostolic Zeal and many sacrifices they continued to preach the gospel and serve their brothers and sisters starting again many times after having failed [Music] Chanel proo Mar de Joan Joan m Pao Mary mop Maria GTI La Francisco joanni Maria domica mataro for Miss [Music] the stained glass windows in the shrine remind us of this we can't see them right now but they do the sunlight Smiles on us through the faces of the Saints and blessed women and men from all backgrounds connected to the history of your community Peter Chanel John matone and Peter toot Martyrs of New Guinea and also Theresa of Kata John Paul II Mary McKillip Maria Goretti laa vuna zarino n namura Francis deos John Bosco Mary Dominica matello brothers and sisters who in different ways and at different times began initiatives and forged paths only to Begin Again many times over they contributed to bringing the gospel to you together with a colorful wealth of charisms animated by the spirit and the same charity of Christ and this is the life of the missionary to depart to come back to depart again it is thanks to them that we are here it is thanks to them to their starts and restarts that we are here and that despite the current challenges which are not lacking we continue to move forward without fear knowing that we are not alone it is the Lord who acts in us and with us making us like them instruments of his grace and that truly is our vocation to be instruments of the Lord AB James for cons cons in this regard and in light of what we have heard I would like to recommend an important direction for your own starts namely the peripheries of this country country I think of people belonging to the most deprived segments of urban populations as well as those who live in the most remote and abandoned areas where sometimes basic necessities are lacking I think two of the marginalized and wounded both morally and physically by Prejudice and Superstition sometimes to the point of having to risk their lives as James and sister Lorena reminded us the church desires especially to be close to these brothers and sisters because in them Jesus is present in a special way and where he our head is present there are we his members for we belong to the same body joined and knit together by every ligament and please do not forget about this closeness being close to to everybody the the attitude and the ways of God consist of three behaviors compassion closeness and tenderness and we always need to remember that especially as priests and deacons and those who serve the people compassion tenderness and closeness for [Music] James for Gra [Music] this brings us to the second aspect the beauty of being present we can see it symbolized in the Ken shells a sign of prosperity that adorns the presbyter of this church they remind us that we are the most beautiful treasure in the eyes of the father close to Jesus and under the mantle of Mary we are spiritually United with all our brothers and sisters whom the Lord has entrusted to us but who cannot be here ignited by the desire that the whole world may know the gospel and share in its power and light James asked how we can convey the enthusiasm for mission to young people I don't think there are techniques for that one proven way however is to cultivate and share with them our joy of being the church this is what Pope Benedict said to cultivate and share with them our joy of being the church the church a welcoming home made up a living Chosen and precious stones placed by the Lord next to each other and cemented by his love as Grace's experience of the Senate reminds us by esteeming and respecting one another and putting ourselves at the service of one another we can show everyone we meet how beautiful how beautiful it is to follow Jesus together and Proclaim his gospel the beauty of being present then is experienced not so much at large events and moments of success but rather in the faithfulness and love with which we strive to grow together every day [Music] [Music] for for in now we come to the third and final aspect the hope of growing in this Shrine there is an interesting catechesis through images incorporating the crossing of the Red Sea and the figures of Abraham Isaac and Moses they are the Patriarchs made fruitful through faith who received a gift of numerous Offspring because they believed this is an important symbol because of it also encourages us today to have confidence in the fruitfulness of our apostolate continuing to sew tiny seeds of good in the furrows of the world they may seem small like a mustard seed but if we trust and do not stop scattering them by God's grace they will Sprout yield an abundant Harvest and produce trees capable of welcoming the birds of the air St Paul reminds us that the growth of what we sow is not our own work but the Lord's holy mother Church teaches the same thing when emphasizing that even with our own efforts God is the one who makes his kingdom come to Earth let us continue therefore to evangelize patiently without allowing ourselves to be discouraged by difficulties or misunderstanding ings even when they arise in places where we especially do not want to encounter them in the family for example as we have heard comp [Music] [Applause] dear brothers and sisters let us thank the Lord together for how the gospel has taken root and continues to spread in Papa New Guinea and the Solomon Islands carry on your mission as Witnesses of Courage Beauty and hope and do not forget the style of God which is closeness tenderness and compassion I thank you for what you are doing and I bless you all from my heart and I ask you please do not forget to pray for me I have need of your prayers thank [Applause] you but but pray in favor not against [Applause] spe okay well what did you think about that uh Archbishop um you know he spoke in three places today at the ape house and U with the uh with the children with the children of the Street Ministry but the long as is this one here to the is speaking to the Catholic Bishop's conference Pap Solomon Island and also the Catholic faith workers that speeches a little longer and meaningful yes uh as he uh Jesus Mary Mother God pray for our sinners now and the Lord is with you and with your spirit blessed be the name of the Lord now and forever Our Help Is In The Name Of The Lord May almighty God bless you the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit amen the Holy Father just gave a final blessing to the uh audience the congregation that is uh being there at uh uh dbti uh where the uh the shrine of Mary Help of Christian addressing the bishops priests religious and catechis and the catechists and in doing so acknowledging uh them for the work and the challenges that they have to encounter in the work of evangelization in proclaiming uh God's Kingdom and I think at this point they will now have the uh presentation of the gifts uh I see Bishop L Bishop a LaToy is a multiple structured sailing watercraft traditionally used in the HEI trade cycle loto are fashion from two or more Dugout logs fashion together to give give stability and cargo carrying capacity the two or more dugouts are joined by poles with a platform built on top the sail is a crab claw sail the motans lived in a dry region because of the harsh dry season they did not have enough suitable areas for the growing of SEO on the other hand the motans and like most people of papon yugin were skilled in the art of making clay cooking pots during the traditional hiri trade They Carried the much priced Motu cooking pots to the people of the Gulf of AA and brought back plentiful supplies of SEO for the motans the gift that we are going to present to you is a replica of one such LaToy as we present this gift to you Holy Father we humbly ask you please remember pap guini in your prayers [Applause] here the loat toy presented to the Holy Father and uh he also asked to remember Pap Nini in his prayers the last message and this time there'll be a choir and I think while that is about to take place an opportunity for the other uh Bishops to get a closeup uh acquaintance with the Holy Father he I think spoke at length about their work uh Archbishop uh in in in papini talked to the Bishops about their work he talked to all the other other Catholic uh Faith leaders who worked here and in that there was a mention of uh uh uh the Holy Father who had visited us before John Paul II who's now become a saint and he's also mentioned uh blessed Peter torot H who is now there is now a process under which uh he will become a a saint for this part of the region so he's acknowledging those uh uh who faithfuls whove worked uh and uh and it was uh quite a statement to hear the name Peter torot mentioned of course as he um did the responses to the three uh four Witnesses and the catechists do play an important role in The Book of evangelization in the sense that the the cist uh repres present the local communities and always work in collaboration with the the missionaries uh the kist always being people who understood the language the culture and they receive the missionaries and assistant missionaries in their work uh and in many cases and he alluded to that also that uh uh the catechist do uh a lot of ground work uh in helping to prepare for the missionaries and continue to further the work of the missionaries the local contribution and uh blessed the in that regard did a lot uh especially when all the missionaries were taken away during the second world war he was present with the people and encouraged them work with them and of course uh uphold the the teaching of Christ especially for the beauty of uh uh family life and uh sacrament of marriage and the same message that is uh recurring that the strong good families as we seen from the children that the are sometimes forgotten or neglected uh the ones in the uh Street Ministries uh as as well as uh children with special needs these are all issues on how to uh integrate them properly within our our families and the responsibility that uh not only the families themselves but the whole Community can stand together and uh uh work towards as you repeat over and over the work of uh being compassion towards others and to focus on the good of others and not to be always self focused and selfish yes that was the that was the m message to the Catholic Bishops of papini and Solomon Islands and of course the Catholic faith leaders over there now Bishop if you can go over some of those Bishops clergy who are on the stand there they're all Arch Bishop are they are they bishops from uh as you said the one in the black there was from Tonga and several of them in Black most of the those in white our Papa new Solomon Islands Bishops most of them are Pap ninians of our dases in papini towards your left there is a the further left is the Cardinal of Tonga and Then followed by the emiritus AR Bishop of raal uh my former uh successor uh predecessor and then at the back is also the Arch Bishop of uh of Suba in Fiji but the rest uh I think most of our viewers will recognize their own Bishops uh Paul uh took the opportunity to have a a a picture taken is the occasion that a memorable occasion you don't want to miss yeah well of course you missed that you're an Archbishop you're Archbishop of raal and an opportunity that you would have been there doing that but you are here in the studio with me and doing this so unfortunately you missed that opportunity but you've been to Rome you've met him I missed that opportunity but in any case I am happy because I'm helping our viewers to understand what is happening here that's probably more important job it's like tet a tet where and and they are setting up tet schools uh in many parts of papini so and and Don Bosco is already established the uh setup of uh the uh technological Institute to a certain degree uh they may have a capacities that are even beyond what the department is having in terms of government regulations and that because they are well Advanced as uh from the start it was like you have to give the best to build up your human uh uh resources and so uh they do have uh uh a lot of of opportunities uh in terms of uh technological uh for and development yes and as as the Holy Father is now wheel is on his wheelchair and is being taken into the the the inside the complex uh those who are meeting him um are they to do with the Don Bosco Institute or are they clergy from some of the other um provinces the meeting that he will be now uh going into is a meeting that uh includes bishops priests religious and catechists and seminarians so most of them are already seated inside the shrine the building but these are thing as they are using the children to welcome him and the young people to welcome him and I think that is a a significant choice to passing on to the children and their youth they will remember this for a long time in their lives oh absolutely absolutely so you have the Cardinal himself there and with the president of The Bishop's conference the bishop of barena Bishop saari there's a couple of Bishops working and this is a shrine from the exterior quite an impressive building there and people probably don't know that such a building is such a an institution uh it's almost like University status in some of the other cities in developed countries it is heading towards that uh status that is always the challenge to align those two the state Church uh Mutual partnership for these things to move forward okay okay okay the moment they've been waiting for for Don [Music] Bosco there a big number of uh religious women who we find in many learning institutions like schools and health centers pastoral work working with the young people children uh are they apart from the the priests and the religious men the catechists and of course the seminarians and uh the Bishops themselves and of course the all the Bishops and and the priest catechist and even the sister you know they're Catholic but you have your own like house man yes yes yes I mean SVD is yes I think the simple way to to uh to simplify or to understand is everybody calls them religious congregations meaning to say that uh to for one congregation for one group to represent Jesus Christ it is too much so you just have to represent a part of him so the Francis can say Focus mainly supposed to be on the poverty of Christ the Divine word missionaries they focus on the divine word the word that is divine that become flesh becomes one with us okay and the missionaries of a Sacred Heart focus on the Heart of Jesus so all these aspects of Christ uh there's so many but one particular congregation they say is a a gift it is a charism to be able to focus on that and witness to that that is why you see uh religious congregation focusing on education like the Christian Brothers the marish brothers and then the r particularly uh focus on the the youth okay okay but here because it's here at Don Bosco now so all the clergy the catechist the nuns the priest from of the of their own work they are all now coming together for this event yes ands you may also uh uh understand and his presence in this particular church and Shrine gives a special significance again to this historically talking speaking even like the Karan school they will always put a note on this that uh po Francis came and vised school at this particular time this were the activities that he engaged in so it adds to so we talk about the series of Institutions as well okay and you call this a shrine huh yes this Shrine is dedicated to Our Lady to Mary the mother of Jesus but especially under the title of Mary Help of Christians yes so the program is set to begin I think the welcome remarks will be from the president of the Catholic Bishop's conference the first is the c of Tonga the one in black one in black yes uh he's joining he became a cardinal before uh our Cardinal on and again he comes from Tonga he was also appointed by uh pop Francis together with our card yeah and he became Cardinal before us and the question was what's important about Tong if you have a cardinal and why not us okay [Music] okay before the uh welcome remarks by the president of CBC um just tell me why the uh Cardinal of Tonga is in black and the rest in white is there some significance in that actually when everybody should I in Rome everybody Bishops we wear black and apart from this it's more practical decision our Bishop thought we are not in Rome we in so let's just we please the welcome remarks by president of the CBC seminarians and catechist from Pap new guine and the region of oania I offer you a warm welcome to this Beloved Country it is a beautiful land with 800 different languages and cultures and of thousands of tribes we represent and W who are our collaborat the mission of the church we are delighted and that he Trav of Kil to the part of the world the per world with us as part of your Apostolic Journey yourness we are full of joy to you CH shepher with us for you are the of Christ your helps to and [Laughter] and and individually as confer of in royalty you father and to our goinging and evation in and Solomon Island welcome Holy Father we love you thank you [Applause] Holy Father Francis it's a on [Music] Holy Father it's a great honor to stand in front you thank you very much inviting me about Ministry the house of [Laughter] the House of Hope provides security shelter hope andal forgiveness and integration for those in is breaking I think we have a little problem with the audio uh that I think it was the testimony from sister lurena and general um after the Welcome by the ca the president of the Catholic Bishop's conference Bishop OT sepe and then it was Sister Lorena General giving a testimony and this will be followed by another testimony from father Emmanuel moku he is from the AR diis of Port Mosby so but on the stand there still giving the testimony is Sister Lorena sister Lorena is a machiner that works in uh the dasis of meni and as you are aware with the um uh sorcery accusation related violence she's been very uh uh active in advocating and especially protecting a lot of women were been accused and uh taken and being hurt and she advocates for them to try to educate the population uh especially around the suspicion of uh sorcery and it is a painful uh experience working with the women and that's what she dedicated her lives to and she's just sharing this as one of those pastoral uh uh challenges we have and also a Law and Order issue yes and as as if we didn't have enough problems with violence against women and this is another type of killing or another type of marginalizing uh a key and important member of the family the the the mother the female in the house and yet we've come up with uh things like sorcery that uh that is now it can become very deadly in some parts of the country and particularly some parts of the Highlands region there are rep report of if ladies being killed accused of practicing sorcery after some of the someone dies in their Village or whatever and they blame it on her yes absolutely no basis whatsoever so she has a handful with what she has to do in the Southern Highlands she works together with the bishop of mindi uh Bishop uh Donal leat and now they are just sharing their particular experience of this pastoral challenge yeah she does a great work she gets a hug from the Holy Father or at least gives the Holy Father a hug whichever way she's been a missionary almost rest of the life here in papini particularly in the of men well there you are people giving the best of their lives in service to another country and in this case a none giving her the best of her life her economic life if you like a best life to Pap and this is another testimony from the Immanuel M tell me about the testimonies what are they speeches testimonies description of what they do I think uh it boils down to as sister just did uh all giving a uh a a snapshot on pastoral activity and the challenges involved and he would be his uh comment around how the catechist handles their pastoral work in the formation of people uh in the faith and so so uh that's basically what he is trying to uh to share as a testimony that uh from The Experience practical challenges and experience with the working with our people in imparting the faith uh properly uh forming people to understand uh what especially in terms of uh living together as uh human beings as made in an image and likeness of God and so uh that is what he's sharing as much as the same for the first that she stays so they are basically very involved with the the Practical pastoral work and what they encounter their successes but also they real challenges yes here at the the media center the uh the audio the sound we're getting from Don Bosco is uh little bit noisy that is why we are talking over what the what the what what the good Father's testimony is so uh we want people to understand that as soon as it's restored we'll get back to it stood in front of them to celebrate with the Cardinal St John St John rots I believe my service as a priest is my contribution towards the building up of the kingdom of The Vineyard of God on Earth the last part of my sharing I want to share my cultural challenges in my ministry as a priest the first one the challenge of moving from a local church that has received so much to a church that is local and to provide is a challenge to be a local church self sufficient sustained secondly the challenge of communicating the twofold purpose of marriage as B companionship for life and caring and of of educating the children in papon Nini is another challenge the third challenge is the young people in Papo new guine the young people are especially called The Leaders of Tomorrow they should be trained they should be cultivated they should be natured let them embrace the Priestly vocation of a dent priest or a religious priest that will be S fruitful for the church and lastly my response to the constant struggle to integrate the Catholic church Faith in our cultural identity I commend from IA in oia let the Fai of Christ show in the culture of papon guini thank you very much [Music] on the beauty of uh working for serving the people but also noting the challenges that uh one has to overcome uh in uh working amongst the the communities amongst the the people as a Catholic ch they are now uh singing a song in response to those two testimonies so far and uh I think uh as it worked out there's a a religious woman which is the Lorena uh giving her testimony now and a priest and now they will have a followed by a catechist and this are what may you may say the three key people who are after the bishop uh takes a lot of the work uh caring for people in the work of evangelization apart from uh the delivery of those Social Services with education and health [Music] I is to my in my heart [Music] [Music] everything [Music] I [Music] for GL [Music] my and my and in my heart the [Music] heart my heart is the GL I love my Lord and F in my heart [Music] Holy Father I stand here on behalf of my fellow brother catechist James atar River of the arch dases of Port MOSI I read my name is James atar River and I am 68 years old I am from The goyala District in the central province of Papa new guini I am sharing my experience as a catechist I began my service as a pastoral worker in 1982 at Holy Family Parish in the arch dasis of Port MOSI for 15 years I did my pastoral work and then graduated as a full-time catechist in 1997 during my time as a catechist I have experienced good things as well as challenges I have been responsible for six zones with 10 chapels what I enjoy most about being a catechist is walking through the villages and serving the people encouraging children in the catechism and being a friend to all my main challenges are as follows the challenge of a lack of resources at times local communities have supported me with financial assistance but at other times I have to sell garden vegetables to afford what I need to do with my work effectively number two the challenge of how to travel to the distant communities within the parish currently I have to work to the further communities in order to do my pastoral Outreach third the challenge of balancing the demands of Pastor Ministry with the responsibilities of family life Number Four The Challenge of the influence of other denominations sometimes we receive criticisms and I do not want the Catholic faithful to lose their faith the fifth challenge the challenge of fewer people committing to be catechist especially the younger generation regardless of all these challenges I am happy and I enjoy what I am doing because it is for the glory of God and to win more souls for heaven I sum it up with James atara's question how can we convey the enthusiasm for mission to young people thank [Applause] you the catechist Mr James Atara this is of thees of mby and she is prayerful greetings Holy Father Pope Francis and at this stage we will now listen to Grace vakia who represented Papa new guini in the C on cality in Rome last year and uh she is now respons going to give us her testimony father I returned from the first session of the
