Fox Soul every Thursday at 6 PM Eastern Standard Time listen y'all I know I say this every week but this week you're not going to want to miss it I told you guys last week about how this summer has literally been one for the books your girl has been on the road I am tired my body's exhausted but I like some bucket list items were checked off not only have I been doing amazing things for my profession but also doing amazing things in terms of the podcast I talked a few weeks ago about how uh we had Candace Dillard on the show if you guys haven't checked that show out make sure that you go back and watch it and this week I am doing a recap of Essence fest that's right your girl was at the Essence Festival of culture but before I hop into that just want to keep a few housekeeping rules now first things first we are a podcast that allows you to self-reflect through our meaningful conversation that is right you can laugh you can cry you can self-reflect whatever you need to do in order to tap into that uh inner self those thoughts that you might be thinking those things that you might be trying to avoid the goal of this show is to make mental health conversations relatable I've had the pleasure of talking to so many amazing people and so many great people have stopped on this podcast because of that very reason so I don't want you to feel like this is just something that we're just uh doing just because you know just because I'm a psychologist I have this show no this show is for you beloved it's for you uh another thing y'all might be wondering why is Dr Shonda outside this episode well I've been trying to stay more committed to enjoying the outdoors staying committed to enjoying all the am amenties I never can say that word amenities that I pay for in this beautiful uh DC streets so I figured I might as well give y'all a view of my rooftop as you can see we got a little tour of DC in the background so yeah get into this good view we got the Pentagon the Pentagon over there uh we have just so many great the monument like it's so many great different areas that you can see from like this really high rooftop literally you can see um the baseball field down the street like people come up here to watch baseball games for the knats like it's just a great View and I wanted to enjoy it more and I also had work to get done for the shelle so I'm like marry the two beloved marry the two you can do work you can enjoy life you can enjoy your rooftop and also get your work done uh so that is why I'm here hopefully you guys can follow in those footsteps of enjoying life and also uh while also incorporating some of the things that you just have to do the want to-dos with the have todos can go together and so I hope that is a good reminder for you now transitioning into the show beloved yes your girl the culture psychologist Dr Shonda was invited to the Essence Festival of culture listen if y'all know anything about me this has literally been like a dream come true it has been on my vision board since I've became a psychologist I'm like you know what as a psychologist I want to be invited to the Essence fest and Not only was she invited to the Essence fest but she was invited to the Essence fest and to uh provide her Talent all three days so I'm like y'all once in a lifetime opportunity well I'm not even going to conf that this because I believe we're going to do more uh things with the Essence Festival of culture but this is a a great opportunity this is something that I want my friends to be involved with so I had my best friends out there um I invited a few other people but they couldn't make it but that's okay we went to the Essence fest we went down to New Orleans we got a room we got uh they were in me they were with me all throughout the convention in the talent room we were riding a little golf carts together uh because like as Talent they take you from place to place with the golf carts uh which was really dope we got some dope videos some silly videos on my uh Instagram and Tik Tok and it was just an amazing time shout out to uh Jasmine for being my manager making sure that everything ran smoothly shout out to my best friend Jayvon for um and Jasmine's also my best friend but sh also shout out to Jayvon Jayvon y'all he styled me the entire weekend and when I say like my best friend Styles me I don't just say that lightly because everybody has like a a friend who can dress down who just like hey here's some some pieces that you can wear to your next event no my best friend went to fit he went to a fashion institute uh so he does this for a living he literally has a clothing line I was just in his fashion show and when I tell you he lended his talents like he lended his talents for me the entire weekend so um I saw y'all had my DMs lit up because y'all just love the selections and the pieces that he pulled for me um more on my recap video will be displayed in terms of like what I wore but the he he really sty styled your girl but it was just amazing we had the opportunity to meet amazing people the hospitality was great and it really felt like just like a dream like literally at one point I told my sister uh like they they saw me walking in the convention by myself some of the Essence Festival uh folks and they were like yo uh basically like you good like as Talent we're supposed to be escorting you and I'm like thanks for the hospitality Essence but I walk the streets of DC by myself all day um I think I'll be fine but that just really speaks to their Hospitality there it was amazing and again shout out to Essence shout out to the talent Bookers everything was smooth and it was it was great it was really great and I can't wait to do more with Essence I believe I'm going to put that in the atmosphere I going to do more with Essence um I've been writing for them as an oped contributor I've been uh I did some things in the past but like to be able to be invited to their 30th Anniversary was amazing uh so so definitely shout out to them also shout out to my friends and family who were able to come out and also shout out to y'all like I met so many of my Tik Tok followers I met so many of my Instagram supporters like so many people just walked up to me as like yo you gotta podcast or I follow you on Tik Tok I follow you on Instagram when I tell you sometimes like the social media game can make you feel like you're in a funnel like okay are people really seeing my content is it really resonating I think that Essence Festival this year really kind of like drove the the it really drove the fact that yes I'm making impact and the people are there the people are watching because I was able to just meet so many of y'all who came up to me and say yo I I see you on this platform or that platform and I admire your work and when I tell y'all it really like it it really lightens my heart when I have those experiences with y'all so when y'all see me in the streets don't just look don't just stare because some of y'all do that too um I don't blame you but also speak like say hi like hey I follow you like we could take a picture together don't just like like that happens to me a lot too I'm like is he gonna say something and like yeah so just don't be weird just say hi and we could be friends in real life um but no it was amazing so throughout the entire weekend I was booked as talent for Essence but I also wanted to add a little sauce on there so Not only was I there I spoke every day um I engaged in the the mental health pod every day but also I'm like you know what this is the essence 30th Anniversary I don't want to just be Talent even though that was amazing I want to also talk to other talent I want to talk to other influencers I want to talk to the celebrities there and so I had the opportunity myself and my twin sister we were providing media passes and we were able to be backstage in the media room with so many of the other individuals who were involved in this year's Essence fest when I tell y'all the media room I I love doing that type of stuff because the Press Room is always chaotic but it's a a good chaos like it makes you stays on stay on your toes and so we had the opportunity to interview some of your favorite uh Stars some of your favorite celebs some of your favorite actors and actresses it was literally an amazing time y'all and I want to show you guys a few of my interviews that I did so make sure that you guys stay tuned so if you guys are in the Netflix streets then I'm sure you've been watching all americ which is an amazing show uh that centers around black people black culture y'all know I love everything bleedy black uh so myself and my twin sister Chanel s Reynolds we were able to catch up with a few of the actors and actress from allamerican homecoming so I cannot wait for y'all to get into this make sure that y'all listen to the date that it drops hey what's up everybody you are listening to the success Playbook podcast by way of the Revolt podcast Network I'm so excited cuz I have two big balls of energy that's right here all who do I have here uh what's up everybody I'm Jesse T Usher I play a train on the boys and I am Susan Hayward I play sister Sage on the boys awesome well tell me a little bit about your characters on the boys o uh at train is a Speedster he is a member of the seven um we've seen him over the last few seasons sort of battle with this conflict of being who he actually is and who he wants to be who he thought he was going to be and just how that's all fell apart and how he's going to claw his way back to Redemption I'm here for it sister Sage uh in her past life also worked with a train and completely uh turned away from Fame and when we find her at the top of season 4 she has an offer she can't refuse to kind of get back into the game and she switches up the whole rules of the game oh what's the offer can you give us a little sneak peek she gets an offer from uh the most powerful soup in the world so the the combination of the most powerful soup and the smartest person in the world it makes one for danger I'm here for it I'm here for it okay so on my podcast I like to ask people about their L's right some of their failures they may have taken so talk to me a little bit about one failure moment one L and how it thrusted you into your next level of success oh my you know what one L that I did really really really early I've always been in uh like theater training and done theater classes and I showed up late to an audition for something I really really wanted and the way I came up there so was like oh you know I'm here now so we can do it now and they looked at me and they were like you're late no why no that your opportunity has passed and it taught me very young that some windows do close and you have to be really grateful for all the opportunities you have so show up and show up on time yeah yeah honestly um I have taken so many which one I don't yeah I don't even know where to begin the thing about this industry though is it it's a 100 losses to every one win that you do get um so you do have to just keep one foot in front of the other but you do learn something from every single one of them you know you learn about making sure that you are prepared and that you are on time and that you are willing or that you are able or whatever it is it's just lesson after lesson after lesson so instead of losses I call them lessons hey he man y'all just gave us a whole sermon right here in Jesus name the name of Jesus Amen Let the church say Amen thank you so much you thank you all right y'all so we are here with Kareem Grimes first of all Kareem how are you how you how are you enjoying Essence fest listen I'm blessed and highly favored period okay I'm amazing um happy to be standing here with you at the 30th Anniversary for the Essence Festival black is beautiful beautiful Blackness as you are displaying it in full regalia absolutely I love that I love that so tell us a little bit about what brought you to Essence fest you're enjoying it that's amazing so yeah what brought you here and I've been I've been coming to Essence Festival since 2000 okay 2001 is when my my last I was with John Singleton we just we just wrapped I think uh baby boy yeah so it's me and Taraji and the whole n and we had a good time and I haven't been back so I had to come back for the 30th yes um and you know just be amongst my people I love it I love I love New Orleans yes and so you are pretty much like a a staple in the culture as I like to call it seriously like the the credits that you have the the work that you do it's amazing how do you stay grounded and take care of your mental health while you're doing it um very good question uh been in this business for 30 something years um you know I live by the modotto you know health is wealth movement is medicine yes exercise is a life sentence so you got to start doing your time yes um so for me you know for me I take my me time I call it paying myself so I pay myself first before I can pay anybody else and whatever that is for you whether it's meditating listening to music sitting in silence but make sure you pay yourself first before you can pay anybody else so that helps me with my mental yes and uh also just having a strong foundation in God first of all that's a bar okay he said pay yourself first before you pay everybody else I'm definitely going to steal that I'm going credit you though and you said your faith in God as well so how does that also keep you grounded I mean it's it's kept me this far you know um especially being in this industry it can be tough uh but having my faith in God having a mother who prays she gets on her prayer line at 5:00 in the morning wow and her prayer warriors pray for everybody soow uh for me it's it's something that is is is a foundation for meing and uh you know you you pray for others you know my mom lives by I'm blessed by the best and praying for you and all the rest that's amazing your mom sounds a lot like my dad he does a 5 a.m. prayer line as well AB absolutely ladies and gentlemen Cory Grimes thank you so much Cory for dropping through now one thing about my sis me and my twin we love us some real housewives of Atlanta as well as real housewives of patomic listen when I tell you that we were able to sit down with the reality king himself Carlos King y'all it was an amazing conversation we were able to get into his head what inspired him to tell our stories like black women and also the importance of representation not just having certain types of black women on TV but also the professional baddies like the the ladies with the the businesses the degrees and like a plethora of black women and our stories being told through the lens of Carlos King let's get into it all right y'all so we are here with Reality King reality TV Kings Carlos King did I say that right yes you said it right okay okay period uh how you doing I'm blessed I mean I'm sandwiched by two beautiful women thank you they are gorgeous so I'm going to go move now period yes so tell us more about how you have been able to make such amazing people household names like the Nene Leaks the Porsche Williams like it it listen it's a blessing I am here to be of service to the world that that's my blessing and the gift that God has given me is is to be able to give opportunities to those who are looking for one right and I take that job very seriously so to be able to work with these icons and to see them be so successful really is the icing on the cake to my career absolutely absolutely yeah so when I watch Real Housewives of pic Real Housewives V I see myself right so what is it that inspired you to tell the stories of professional black women it's because I grew up being surrounded by professional black women and I wanted my shows to represent the real world and the real world is black females are the largest growing entrepreneurs in the world and you ladies have to be seen um based on the television shows that I create so I I I make sure to do that so with my shows love and marriage bill Collective that is really the DNA of the company and my job on this Earth is to continue to provide those opportunities to women who look like the two of you you know so that's what I do yeah listen we are excited to have you here today so tell us what's next for Carlos King any reality shows so we got some shows coming out that's really good we got the loveing man franchise Bill Collective family Empire is on now is my new show so in addition to that my podcast reality with the King where we do our one-on-one interviews and I got some people you know coming up I got the fellas in the building okay cuz a few of these men need to answer to what they've been doing and I'mma ask all the questions yes for the for the girls not for me for the girls for girls for the girls for the girls for the girls okay yes well we appreciate your time Carlos thank you thank you girls so much I appreciate it thank you baby you're welcome thanks baby when I tell y'all I was so excited about this next interview myself and my twin sister we were like oh my gosh what are we going to do when we meet these two individuals if you were a 90s kid like my sis and I are then you would have felt the same way because you would have saw this person grow up right before our eyes and EES Bayou watching things like cousin skeer Friday and the list goes on and on literally a black beauty icon and y'all can I tell y'all that she is just as beautiful inside as she is outside Miss Megan Good who was the sweetest person as well as her co-star Mr Corey Hardrick and Corey you might remember from things like allamerican uh the various movies that he played in various movies that he acted in but I will say beloved ate the whole roll up and left no crumbs in the new movie divorcing the black y'all we got to interview Megan good and Corey Hardrick about this new movie and a lot of y'all were wondering okay what was it like y'all playing these roles when you actually been through a divorce so we had a chance to ask them that and here's what they said so excited to be here with the both of you Megan Cory hard first of all what is different about this mie what's different about the mie a lot of things experi okay um I would say the pacing Mr Tyler is too fast but it's also of great quality it's an elevated project and a lot of times when people shoot fast it's like you know trying to move but the quality the C the cinema the artistic all the value the texture was there to the next level so shout out to Mr talar for that and he let us do our thing and he let us do our thing you know and the world's going to love this movie July 11 I'm excited it I'll be there yeah I would say that's the biggest thing too was the pacing um which was definitely a challenge but one that you know we were up to and to be honest we had a lot of fun like it just working with Tyler working with the cast um the whole experience was one that that we loved and that we would definitely do again yeah okay yeah so I'm wondering specifically for this movie what was it like for you to have to play these parts while also going through public divorces for the both of you say it again I'll you repeat the question yeah so what was it like for you to have to play this part while also going through public divor like what that like uh well we're artists I'm an actor so whether public or whatever the case may be I would have still did the movie because it was in a great script you know so let's remove the name from it I'm doing the movie so you know we we actors and actors act and to get an opportunity to work with the amazing Tyler Perry who changed people careers and lives you know that's a Dream from true and I'm sure Mega can say the same thing yeah we love to do great work and this was a great script and we went in and that's said yeah I mean I would say that that you know it's it's obviously you have a a rich will to draw from But ultimately at the end of the day you're just trying to find the heartbeat of the characters find where they live um where they are right now specifically in their Journeys and um and yeah I mean the biggest thing is just being able to be authentic and to be honest and to um and for me I love the idea of just like when women see this movie Them feeling empowered about the second stage of their life and um I believe like I said what Megan saying it is about women empowerment and giving women strength you know cuz women and black women are the backbone of this world and this movie you know will kind of highlight that especially through Megan's performance that she gave you know she she's going to change a lot of lives even though she didn't get into it trying to do that it just going to be what it's going to be you know out to Dallas though a little bit perod he's vulnerable so and and how are you both similar to your characters and how are you different to your characters you know I don't know if I'm similar to Ava um but one one similarity for sure is family you know having your family there for you covering you no matter what unconditional love um support um having that best friend that will tell you the truth um you know all those things so in that I think I think her uh my community and my support system is similar to a yeah and it's oh so how is Dallas and Cory similar they're not they have a heart they have a heart they have a heart well we love that that's it period first of all thank you guys for joining us thank you so much new movie July 11 July 11th Amazon Prime Prime video not miss it biggest movie in the world cuz Megan Good is in it and Cory har is in it shout out to Miss Debbie Morgan Richard Lawson Shannon Wallace Joel Taylor palador shout out to miss Tyler Perry we love you sir we'll see you soon am yes let's go we love you let's go we outside what we doing can we get a quick picture absolutely if y'all are like me y'all feel like a lot of black people only have stars because of 50 Cent 50 Cent is the only reason why I have stars on my TV right now it's because of the power Universe one thing that he is not afraid to do is create an amazing storyline with some amazing characters I got to talk to one of these characters who plays jukebox in The Amazing series raising Kanan uh she is amazing theatrically trained classically trained that's why she has them vocals we were able to talk about a few things that she has coming up and yeah I want y'all to watch it how she prepares for her roles and what we can expect for her in this upcoming season of her life watch it hey everybody we are here with the legendary Miss juke box herself introduce yourself to the people hey everybody I'm Haley Kilgore hey how are you today you enjoying Essence girlo I am so good I'm so good I was saying I was like I need a nap but I don't want to go to sleep like all day it's like there's so much to do there's so much to see there's so many different people to meet it's amazing yes it literally has been amazing but what's been more amazing amazing it's me just watching your growth as an actress it's been like I'm a day one fan so you like literally take my breath away whenever I hear you sing seriously yes can you tell us about how you prepare for your roles oh my goodness I think it all starts with my theater training and my theater background just being able to do proper character analysis and really knowing the story and being able to perform um yeah it's once you get locked in you kind of get locked in Forever AB so yeah every all I've done I just do I make sure that I build from the ground up and have fun while I'm doing it too yeah yeah I was literally thinking the other day about a song you sung in raisen Kanan uh I think was Sweet Love by Whitney Houston You Give Good Love You Give Good Love yes girl when I tell you I had chills when you say how do you like prepare yourself for things like this like are you also classically trained in terms of vocally or oh yeah yeah I started training vocally when I was 8 years old wow so I was in Gospel Choir I trained in theater Jazz country Opera all the things all the things so and then of course like the school of Beyonce and Wy Houston and all the people that I grew up listening to and loving but yeah okay okay and so I'm a wellness professional I'm a psychologist love that thank you girl thank you so how do you make sure that you're prioritizing your Wellness in regards to like your busy schedule how do you do that I'm not always the best at it okay it's a lot of trial and error but I think it starts with breath and allowing yourself to pause yeah doesn't you think everything has to get done all at once and it doesn't and so that's the most important thing is just being able to slow down and then I surround myself with people that keep it a th% honest with me all the time and make sure I eat and drink water and sleep so yeah yeah they keep you grounded they do yes yes they do but what can we expect next in terms of your career yeah I'm working on my album y I'm really excited I'm excited to share everything with everyone we have some really fire songs I got to work with some dream producers so I'm really really really excited well I'm going to be first in line to get it because that voice nothing to play with thank you girl for coming through another Black Beauty icon in the 90s watched her while I was a kid growing up y'all might know her as fancy from Jamie Fox or somebody else from another role that she played currently on Real Housewives of I believe it's Beverly Hills like this lady is just taking the whole TV screen by storm Miss garcel buve sat down with myself and my twin sister and also along with a few of her co-hosts in her new upcoming movie that will be airing on Lifetime make sure that y'all listen up and listen for that release date so that you can watch it when it airs also all right y'all so we are here with Miss garcel buve and Mr vaugh so listen y'all have this Amazing Project coming up Tempted By Grace can y'all tell us what by love tempted by love see I'm at Grace like we in church or something tempted by love okay so so tell us about why this project is important what's different about it in comparison to previous projects um for me I would say it's really great that lifetimes is doing romance as opposed to just you know their regular programming um but what I loved about the script is that it's showing that love can happen at any age I think it gives people hope I think it's also you want to root for these characters and it's a great ride it's really a fun movie he's great in it trying to keep up with her N I really love how um you know I think nowadays people have so many expectations and so many mindsets of what love is supposed to look like what the man is supposed to be doing what the woman is supposed to be doing and so I think this movie really shows that it's really what y'all two make it it's about the connection energy youall have with one another um and you can find love Wherever You Feel Like Love is right for you I love that and question for you how was it working with a legend so please let Enlighten us let us know I tell you what I had to show up always ready always have to show up like as the top of my game she's a boss you know she's working on several different things at one time um but when she's in it she's in it when she's present she's present when she's there this is where she is and it was really a great chance to learn how to be an executive how to how to be a boss how to be just a powerful black woman in power you know what I mean I love it it was great it was really fun I mean in the chemistry was off the charts I mean it's one thing to do a romance and you don't know if you're going to have the chemistry um but the minute he showed up it was game on shut it down it was great and my last question to you both so I am a wellness Advocate as a psychologist and so I'm wondering for y'all how is it that you stay grounded with such busy schedu to grounded what keeps you grounded and you have a lot of projects going on you have family you do the housewives how how do you ground yourself um I try to take time for myself I mean it may not be a day it may not be a week but if I can carve out sometime at the end of the day have bath listen to music put candles on I think any little bit helps because I can't take long stretches of time but you know I just try to check in and ground myself even if it's just going in my backyard having no shoes on and you know feeling close to the earth I love that I love yeah who have thought I know you thought I was going to say a shout out to K I thought you was I ain't going lie I was waiting for something um for me um I've been in therapy for years so that really always helps me be able to check in with myself and sort and navigate whatever I'm going through at the time um and also have a very good group of friends who like they from they from back in Baltimore like they've known me for a long time they always keep it real with me so I spend a lot of time around them just to separate from the industry and separate from people who around me for other reasons you know I like to get back to Homegrown and I love a black man saying he's going to therapy let's promote that that part let's promote that I'm here for well thank you both for stopping by thank you what your name I'm Shonda sh Chanel what's the difference what's the how many minutes or minute all right y'all is a rap your girl was at Essence Festival of culture for the 30th Anniversary all three days as Talent as well as media I'm exhausted I feel like I deserved all them beignet I ate on this on the trip that I was on and all the grilled oysters too uh Essence was amazing literally set my family and myself and uh my my sister and my best friends up with tickets every night uh concert tickets every night uh amazing food in the talent room hair and makeup it was just a bomb experience and I can't wait to come back next year thanks for going through this journey with me family and don't forget you have the power to create the emotions that you want to experience and go outside and enjoy the weather go outside and enjoy your outside today whatever that look
