[Music] uh welcome back now it's hosting more than 300 episodes of the hugey prop with the panel show the last Lake but when Adam Hills isn't appearing on our screens he's busy putting pen to paper as a bestselling or and as he releases the third children's book if you would please Allison ham ham that up uh Rockstar detectives trouble at the track he joining us in the studio now hello how are you hi I've also got buddy with me yeah he he likes a bit of love to be with all the guests and have a bit of love I think he's very confused by my prosthetic leg he doesn't entirely know what to do with it don't let him bite it the third book well done tell us all about it well the story of these books actually goes back to my daughter when she was 8 years old yeah who was quite it came to me quite concerned and said Daddy I don't know whether when I grow up I want to be a rock star or a detective brilliant and you went Bing I was like well I I was I was trying to be encouraging we'll do both you could be Rock Star by night and a detective by day you could solve crimes during the day and then go and do shows at night and then I was like that's a good idea for a book a good idea so I wrote the first book Rockstar detectives about um Charlie and George these two like 12year olds that inadvertently become rock stars but have to solve crimes and then my my daughter read that one and she went I loved it can someone die in the next one oh my gosh he darkest all right okay so the next one was like well I mean they could but it is a kids book so but then I go well I've got a focus group at home yeah and they want death they want so so the second one was murder at the movies and then we were tossing around ideas for this third one and it was one of I had a couple of ideas and one of the Publishers one of the editors went oh what about the Paralympics could it be something said at the Paralympics so we came up with a story and I took it home to my daughters and went so these are the two that I came up with and they were like n and I went and this is the par and they went yeah Paralympics so it's they're like your like secret editors it's the best thing ever that's so lovely here's the thing that yeah because obviously how long when did you write the first one uh the first one was all four years ago five years ago so obviously that's quite a seismic time in a kid's life so are they still your editors or are they still like are they still engaged or are they bit like yeah right Dad I'm on Tik Tok now oh absolutely the 8-year-old's completely grown out of them the younger one has grown into them but it's totally that like I I in this one there's a lot of social media references and I've been like so what is this and they're like no one's on Facebook anymore about the in about Tik Tok so great they're actually really good editors oh that's so lovely the lovely story here though that uh is it George who who really comes into his own in this book is that yes yeah yeah yeah so George is um you know I wanted a character who had a disability and not just like his disability actually helps him solve the crimes CU he looks at things from a different angle he's also faster if he's chasing someone cuz he's in the wheelchair but when well book day came around I was kind of saying to one of the editors oh what a I mean a kid's going to want to get into a wheelchair so that that they can pretend to be this character and my editor went yeah but what about the kids who are already in wheelchairs who can finally dress up like one of their characters and it had never occurred to me and then World Book Day came around and I was getting like messages social social media messages of kids going right my son can finally dress up as one of the characters in a book that is so lovely the impact of this book is unbelievable it's so and it was kind of a slight little accident I didn't even realize I actually said to my daughters um you know cuz I get paid for these how I'd give you the money because I wouldn't and then they went well how about we give some to charity oh so I've actually donated some of the some of the um proceeds to Charities as well so so lovely did you have anyone that you looked up to when you were a kid was there anyone on television or in the sport like in the paralympic work but me the parp I know too much about the history of the paral Olympics when did they like did you have was it televised back there I don't suppose it was not like the honestly the first person I saw with a prosthetic leg like mine doing great things was Johnny peacock in 2012 right at the and I remember saying to him like you're the first person I've seen who's young who's fit who's got a prosthetic leg and is doing amazing things I said cuz everyone else I ever see is just all blows at the clinic and he went yeah that's how I feel when I look at you that is not the way I thought this conversation was going to go but seriously do you think we've we've come a long way when it comes to disability diversity or do you think we've got a long way to go oh I think we're definitely getting there definitely I mean if you look now the amount of even the amount of comedians with disabilities when I started talking about my foot it was maybe 2001 and there was no one else out there maybe Franchesca Martinez who has cereal py but now you got Rosie Jones Chris mccaan Josh Pew there's just a whole there's too many to be fair there's too many of them it's starting an anti- movement no no one saw that coming I can't believe the last leg was only supposed to be for 10 episodes it was literally brought out for the par Olympics yeah and it was just 10 episodes and we got such a backlash as well when it was first announced that it was going to be a paralympic show called The Last Leg people were like how my God how dare you did you get a backlash from the community or did you get a backlash from uh everyone until they saw the first show yeah and then they went oh you've got one leg that guy's got one leg he's got hand all right okay we totally get it but yeah we just thought it was going to be 10 nights and then look at it now at the end of it I think cuzz there's a there's a thing with Josh and Alex and I we're like a three part Harmony of Comedy voices yes because like Joshua's got the world weary kind of West country and Alex has got that little puppy dog you know what I mean and then you've got the kind of slightly responsi occasionally shout Australian yeah Australian and somehow oh is that how you keep buddy on side just a little snack every now needs you've learned a few things tell us about being out in Paris what are you going I mean you must be so excited we're really excit well the last Paralympics was Tokyo and we didn't get to go because of Co so this time we're actually going to be there on the ground uh it's going to be the same time zone as here it's going to feel like a home oh my God oh my God it's going to be great we actually there was a moment where they said to us do you want to stay in a hotel right next to the TV studios on the outskirts of Paris yeah and you know have a 5minute commute every morning or do you want to stay in the center of Paris and have an hour commune we're like yeah I think yeah we'll be right center Center what you baby you're not i' be right next to the studio no way man you look at the a psychological test oh gosh no extra hour in bed you're mad you so you're going extra hour in bed you're going good coffee and Quant yeah absolutely 100% listen best of luck with this so much Adam Hills Rockstar detectives trouble at the track he's out now so so good thanks
