Jahan Dotson to Eagles: What It Means for Washington Commanders

when the Washington commanders traded Johan Dodson on Thursday the move didn't take Everyone by surprise but the location and the capital now that may be a different story that and more coming up on doson trade the Washington commanders trade their first round wide receiver from just a few years ago to the Philadelphia Eagles we're going to dive into all the layers on that and we're also going to talk about Jaden Daniels because of course it is day 16 of training camp so we have our Eye of the Tiger segment but that's buried all the way at the end of this episode if you want to discuss Ashburn for day 16 of training camp when the news broke my phone started going off I'm not gonna lie initially I was like yeah I'll read it when I get to Ashburn then my phone went off again I was like ah I'll read it when I get to Ash and my phone went off again I said hold up so I used my Apple carplay hit the button voice text came over and Siri told me the news uh herself so very interesting stuff going on and of course the layers to this trade for Jan doson and I think the first part of this layer is the fact that he was just traded right out right and and the the conversation around Jan doson has not been a new one now there was an angle to this conversation that some people tried to take where it was Johan doson may get cut from this roster I think that's where those of us here who were here every single day kind of took that St and said look he's not getting cut Johan Dodson is either going to be on this roster or he's going to be on a different roster but he's not going to be cut walking the street on the waiver wire on Cut Down day or anything like that that's a little bit crazy so this was basically the only alternate uh location or alternate plan that could possibly take shape for the Washington commanders with Jan is trading him um now about the the fact that he was traded why why did this come to fruition right because there's been talks of receivers having bad attitudes and and maybe being a little bit lazy on the field and and stuff like that and I think overall really at the Crux of it this is just not a fit whether it be scheme wise whether Jan just can't execute some of the things that maybe Cliff Kingsbury has been asking him to be able to execute or it's personality wise you know this this gung-ho 100% all the time every rep is your last rep and and you know empty the gas tank as Dan Quinn likes to say that may simply just not be the style that Jan Dodson fits in best overall or maybe just now at this point in his NFL career and there's the bottom line period where or bottom line to this where a new change of scenery perhaps was just needed for Jan and for this team uh go ahead and move him because you can't make Jan Dodson your third fourth fifth receiver if he's not working out without a whole lot of drama without a whole lot of questions not just to the coaching staff but also the other receivers like Terry McClaren is gonna get asked what does Johan have to do to get back up the depth chart and all these things so if you're going to go that route or if that's the path you're on the best thing to do is just reset for everybody Johan Dodson gets to go home he lived about two hours away from Philadelphia so he gets to go back there gets to start over uh start fresh and of course AJ Brown Devonte Smith those receivers are going to help him by taking a lot of attention off of him and giving him more opportunities produced for Philadelphia not that Washington commanders fans are necessarily hoping he's going to produce a whole lot for the Philadelphia Eagles but now we turn to the next layer of this we talk about just the fact of why he was traded and what led to this whole thing and again I don't think anybody necessarily holds any ill will towards anybody in this deal we'll find out Johan dodson's obviously going to do his media with Philadelphia some other commanders players have come out or former commanders players have come out in their media with their new teams and certainly express some sour grapes with their former franchise so we'll find out if there's any ill will or any hard feelings uh in this deal from Jan when he meets with the Philadelphia media now let's talk to the about the draft Capital right because I think that's honestly guys where this thing kind of gets a little bit interesting and you kind of have your first eyebrow raising moment here so using the Jimmy Johnson draft trade value chart Model A 2025 fifth rounder for the Washington commanders is estimated to be worth about 34.5 points a 2025 fifth rounder from the Washington commanders is estimated to be worth about 34.5 points now on top of that fifth rounder that they send to the Philadelphia Eagles for Jan Dodson they also they receive the Philadelphia Eagles 2025 third rounder and two seventh round picks now in total that's 1393 points if the third round pick is Philadelphia's own third round pick but they also own Miami's third round pick which was projected right now to be earlier in the NFL draft so if that's the draft pick then the total value is 167 three points so it's about a 30 point difference between the eagles's own organic pick and the one that they own from the Miami Dolphins now I expect it's going to be the Eagles own own organic pick so it'll be later is estimated anyway uh to be later obviously none of these picks are official yet so roughly you're speaking 139.3043 points or 132.0 points that difference is number 99 overall to number 91 overall so either way you're talking about a late third round pick that's basically when you when you break down the values of it Johan Dodson essentially represents a late third round pick and point value to the Philadelphia Eagles so if you're doing that the Washington commanders essentially traded away the equivalent of a late third round pick and a fifth round pick in next year's draft to get back a late third round pick and two seventh round picks which means if you're counting at home Washington Commanders gave more in draft pick trade value numbers than the Philadelphia Eagles did so essentially the Washington commers paid the Eagles to take Jan doson off of their hands now again is that a sign that there are hard feelings and it's dude you got to get out of here you ain't got to go home but you got to get out of here perhaps potentially now we haven't seen that or witnessed it but most NFL teams aren't going to let you see that or witness that right either anyway so that is the potential here so either way though this obviously was not fitting it was not going to fit and we're going to talk about this a little bit more but the trade the fact the trade happens to the Philadelphia Eagles means that there's probably not a lot of suitors out there either so what's next for the Washington commanders wide receiver room right well there's really three potential options on the table that seem to be more likely than that that we can put our finger on the first one we can put our finger on is that you're going to go into this regular season with a a wide receiver group that looks like this Terry McClaren diami Brown alom zakus Luke mcaffrey Jameson Crowder and then I think maybe Bryson chain is that sixth guy or and this you had to know every day they had to know this was going to come up you could have a receiver group that looks like Brandon auk Terry McClaren diami Brown alamin zakus Luke mcaffrey and then Jameson Crowder or Bryson train or somebody rounding out that wide receiver group and look I know there's been reports that commanders have pulled out of those conversations but I'm here to tell you right now especially in the NFL circles a team can pull out of a conversation and quickly pull back into that conversation and also quickly pull right back out of that conversation right now not telling you what going to happen but it's hard not to see this trade go down and then kind of think to yourself hm maybe there's something else coming maybe there's another move coming and of course that move could be I guess in theory CD lamb the Dallas Cowboys dis gruntled receiver so you got CD Terry dami Oz Luke and then Jameson or Bryson or someone like that now I don't think as as odd as it is to see Johan Dodson getting traded from the Washington commanders and Philadelphia Eagles I don't know that there's a reality where Jerry Jones trades his star receiver to Washington like I don't know that that reality exists that would just blow the roof off of this whole thing and if the hiccup to trading for Brandon and iuk for the Washington commanders because remember they had these conversations if the if the hold up to trading for Brandon iuk was the long-term contract and the money well you're gonna give cidd lamb a bigger better contract than you're give Brandon auk so is the talent level between CD lamb and Brandon iuk enough for Adam Peters to potentially pull the trigger on that I don't know personally I think the most likely course of action is Terry dami oie Luke Jameson Bryson those kind of the six that I'm picking right now I think you're going to look at at a six-man group that is on this roster already maybe they add a free agent at some point in time but there's really no like Juju Smith Schuster I don't know like does he really move the needle at this point Chase Claypool like I don't know that he moves the needle either so I think that if you're given the choice between adding Chase Claypool adding Juju Smith Shuster or anybody else is on the market or keeping the guys you have now I think you just keep the guys you have now uh run with it see what you have and then again 2025 is kind of really the biggest uh part of this project uh that we've been looking on the horizon for so never say never right brand and iuk certainly would be exciting CD lamb I mean you know I'm not gonna I'm not going to name names because I'm gonna let them speak for themselves but I will tell you that a reporter out here said if they trade for CD lamb I will eat a whole onion like an apple um and I may or may not try to hold them to that so you know stay tuned for that if that trade does go down but I think you're most likely looking at a group that's probably already on this roster to be honest with you uh as far as Philly are the trade going to Philly the biggest thing I take from this is Adam Peters understands the temperature of this thing right he's been in the NFL for a really long time so he knows when he trades jond Dot's a first round draft pick from three years ago to a division rival it's not going to go over well to me that sounds like you're not getting like or equal value from anybody else or you're simply not getting interest from anybody else and now you are faced with a decision of cutting a guy who's a first- round draft pi and getting nothing for him or keeping him knowing that he's not a fit for your organization and basically just dragging it out for both sides or you flat out cut him and you flat out cut him you get nothing for him so really I think that at the end of the day this was probably the best option available which again just kind of shows you where Jan Dodson really was standing not just with the Washington commanders but in the NFL Community as a whole the first beat reporter here in Washington though that I know of that sniffed out anything a Miss between Johan doson and this franchise was candy Waller buy TV so she's going takes on this Jan Dotson trade thank you for making lock down Commander is your first listen today and every day every dayers make your second listen of the day the lockon fantasy football podcast where you can get your daily insight to the best fantasy draft strategy so you can win your League this season part of the lockon podcast Network your team every day candy Waller president of buoy TV you can follow her on Twitter at Seawall coming through here with her reactions and her first reaction just to the fact that Johan Dodson has been traded from the Washington commanders I knew something was brewing I knew something was going on it it was it was evident we talked about it a few weeks ago um I asked uh head coach Quinn about the overall wide receiver group and got his take there and as I continued to focus on that position group I said okay what's going on with Jan where's that spark where's you know just that was a player that I thought would really thrive in this offense with this coaching staff and I wasn't really seeing it so I decided to ask coach kingsberry about Jan and he and he had some of course some favorable things to say of course but once he mentioned um you know Jan getting comfortable with them and you know sharing that Jan has a report with Jaden and that is encouraging I was like wait a minute they've all been together since May right um so if there's still a comfortability thing or kind of just being encouraged by the report with Jaden I was like all right this is something that we need to watch to see what he does for joint practices in the two preseason games yeah and that's where we talk about like media literacy right like I know you're big on media literacy getting into high school and I think media literacy needs to be in every high school because the biggest thing to pay attention to in any media whe whether it's commercial a TV show an interview is not what's necessarily being said but what's not being said and that's like the equivalent of being in week 17 of the NFL season and head coach get up to the podium and say well our guys put in a lot of effort if you're a week 17 talking about effort you got a problem right so that's so that's where that first problem comes and now let's get to the actual trade itself and let's talk about the compensation so the Washington Commander sent Jan and a fifth rounder to the Philadelphia Eagles for a third rounder two seventh rounders just looking at that trade pick alignment how does that how does that sit with you because I know a lot of fans are like bro we just gave up Jan for nothing yeah just yes and I see that I also am wondering two things David so I'm like okay we know they don't you know it still works they still work to do there's still gaps here we understand that we know that they're recalibrating not necessarily rebuilding they recalibrating but we also know that this organization has a theme they they know what they're looking for in terms of the caliber of player so more draft capital is good for the actual draft it is also good if you're going to package it up do something else with it do something else with it we'll talk about that in a minute so so the compensation for J is that a sign of how far Jan has fallen out of favor with this team do you think and do you think they fall he's falling out of favor like is it is it as far as like they just didn't want Jan anymore or is it more so like a it's just not I think it may just not be a fit I think it may not be a fit if folks are calling then you're going to answer call yeah you know hey if if if he seems like he's this isn't a fit for him and I mean we saw you know maybe this isn't like I said there's there's a theme here there's a message here there's a Vibe here and it might not be a fit to this organization's culture someone's calling let's see who get the who gives us the best deal and let's just go with it yeah I think sometimes when you're in organization if you draw that hard line you say if you're going to if you're going to ride this r with you got to be this kind of a person if you're not on that side of that line then you're not going to be here for the R I think that's that's that's certainly fair right um let's talk about the Eagles now that's that's the other part that's got people riled up about this so Johan Dodson goes to Philadelphia Eagles less than two hours away from where he grew up in Nazareth Pennsylvania I think that's a city name I know it's Nazareth High School so I think that's the name of the city as well um I mean two two times a year you know he's going to be out there trying to eat he's going to go up against Mike S still most likely I expect them the probably put him in the slot more often than not so him and Mike S are still going to see a lot a lot of each other what do you think about the idea of trading a first round draft pick three drafts ago to a division rival I don't like it at all I mean that's the first thing and it doesn't help that I'm wearing a green dress today was just like that's an accident the news was I was dressed before any of this happened but that actually sucks if I'm just being real honest like oh the Eagles and I always have this thing with the Eagles I always feel like eagles the Eagles make moves like you know they have great drafts great off Seasons they they tried to put the pieces together so that they can go deep into the um you know into the playoffs it it shows improves all the time so I'm like within the division I mean I think we made you know hey I think this one of Johan's favorite teams from his childhood that he really loved the Eagles so maybe this will help him to reconnect you know and um maybe he'll be more of a fit there but it does stink that it's within the division I'm like man wow okay so so when you look at the two teams right you look at the Eagles and a lot of people say you know they're a Super Bowl Contender even with how last season ended and the losing streak and all that stuff there they should be a Super Bowl Contender certainly a contender to win the NFC east and you look at the Washington commanders and whether you want to say recalibrate rebuild whatever word you want to use a lot of us have kind of talked about look this whole whole adventure with Adam Peters and Dan Quinn is much more about 2025 and 2026 than it is about 2024 that being said and kind of trying to foretell the story lines of the future if Cooper Dee because that's the other part that's come back up is the Washington Mayers traded uh draft picks back and and they allowed the Eagles to come up and get Cooper Dee which a lot of people kind of wanted for the Washington commanders if Cooper dein gets an interception in one or two of these games if Johan Dodson gets a touchdown in one or two of these games and the Philadelphia Eagles win the NFC east and the Philadelphia Eagles make it deep into the playoffs and Philadelphia Eagles maybe make it to the Super Bowl or we even win a Super Bowl how bad is that going to be for Adam Peters from a from a coverage standpoint do you think we're you know us right are we going to keep that lens of this whole thing is about the future not 2024 specifically or is that going to turn into a problem for Adam Peters from a PR standpoint I think it's going to turn into a problem by by default right because for me I'm starting to think about it like well is this a rebuild or you really trying to win and trying to make a move right now to be the best possible team that you can be with what you have and it remains to be seen right because I think this move we really don't know right like is this really about the rebuild okay got a couple draft picks and like I said you know I know we're going to talk about it later but it remains to be seen because as much as rebuild sounds like the right thing to do and of course makes total sense right who's going to change a culture in a couple of months yeah this is always win now yeah it's always going to be win now I mean that's what you got to tell the guys on the field right you can't tell the guys on the field this is about 2026 you got to tell the guys on the field we're trying to win now so in that that vain wide receiver Room Washington commers Terry mclen alamin zakus DeAndre Brown Luke mcaffrey so on so forth Jameson Crowder all those guys is this the group we're going to go into the regular season with or do you think there's a move coming I think there's a move coming and who's that move going to be for I don't know say so okay Devils was Brandon auk right I was like all right I'm I'm not convinced they're out of this conversation but I also came up who else came up into my mind and of course I know everybody going be like good grief can now you it's CD lamb now CD lamb is expensive very expensive but still an option mhm so we'll see we got we got to see we will see what happens certainly never a dull day in Washington and on the commanders be but you know what let's I'd rather be talking about this kind of stuff than talking about the other stuff we were talking about right beforehand candy Waller buoy TV the first Washington commanders B reporter to get on the sniff that something was up with Johan Dodson so believe that appreciate you coming through y definitely thank you all right once again that to download America's number one sports book wrapping up today's episode of lock on commanders out here in Ashburn for another day of training camp and you know it's been a busy busy day when we finally talk about the actual practice that Happ beened on the field in the last segment of the show that's here we are that's where we are today I on the tiger day number 16 Jaden Daniels 86% completion percentage five touchdowns thrown on the day and one fumble it was a heavy heavy Red Zone drill day for the Washington commanders the first drill of the day opened up in the Red Zone very close Red Zone I don't know exactly which yard line they were lined up on but they were very close to the end zone Jane Daniels threw two passes both of them completed both of them for touchdowns first one was to wide receiver Luke mcaffrey in the near left side end of the end zone for a touchdown again the second one was actually a shuffle pass to tight end Zack Zs who got into the end zone as well second time around again in the Red Zone completed four passes out of four passes uh the first one was to Zack her it was a flat route run to the right side a little bit high but Zack Herz adjusted brought the ball in second pass completed was a screen to the right side of the field to Brian Robin another right side read for Jaden Daniels going through his progression went through about three or four different reads before he found Jameson Crowder for his third completion and then a and then Austin Eckler the running back leaked out of the back field for the fourth pass of the set for another touchdown there so four four perfect with a touchdown in that red zone set third Set uh only one pass thrown but it was to Luke mcaffrey from Jane Daniels Jane also had a quarterback run on a drop back as well uh probably would have been tackled pretty quickly by Jamon Davis on that play fourth set only one pass it was a completed pass slant route to Terry mclen for a touchdown in the end zone now I'm going to tell you exactly where he was lined up in the formation but I will tell you he was not the left side x receiver so just put it that way uh fifth Red Zone drive he was one for two had a drop actually by Zack her so technically that should have been completed as well and then he hit uh Terry mclen on a post route in the end zone for another touchdown six Red Zone set of the day one for two found Zack hers on the right side of the field on a hitch route threw one pass incomplete Terry McClaren however the incompletion was low it was the only place you could put the ball they just couldn't connect on it and then Jane Daniels and Tyler biotage had an issue on the snap creating a fumble so obviously that would have gone to Jane Daniels the good news on that fumble is he did recover the ball so they would still would have had the ball in the Red Zone even with the fumbled snap seventh Red Zone try 0 for one had a play action route to the left side flat to Zack her that they could not connect on Eighth time back on the field a left left to right side drag for Luke mcaffrey completed on the first pass attempt and then a deep Corner shots to Zack Herz for a touchdown Tyler Owens was in coverage got washed in the traffic uh trying to cover the tight end and he was wide open and punted the ball in his now trademark I don't know if he's going to do in the regular season probably wouldn't recommend it but trademark celebration uh some other news and notes from today's practice Brandon Coleman back in pads uh again he's kind of been in pads but hasn't been doing a lot but he was participating individual drills did not participate in any team drills that I saw but still a step in the right direction for Brandon Coleman Frankie louu had an interception on a Jeff Driscoll pass not a lot of interceptions or takeaways this training camp uh joit Jr defensive coordinator not happy about it Dan Quinn head coach not happy about it defense not happy about it but they did get that interception on Jeff Driscoll so they'll be happy with that Juan Martin came in just guns blazing for a sack at one point in time and then uh possibly one of the most fun yet also kind of crazy ways to wrap up a day like this uh field goal drills with no kicker because Riley Patterson was released before practice and uh there are reports that there is a trade going down to bring in a kicker however that trade at least as of the time that we hit record has not been made official the commanders may have made it official since I've been recording but either way a kicker is coming but today there was no kicker so they snapped they held they had an equipment manager pretending to kick the football uh practicing their protection sets and their Rush sets and all that stuff very entertaining but a good way to end a very hectic day out here in Ashburn it never it's never a dull day covering this team but you know what doing like I said to Candy doing it this way and being interested this way much better than the way that we've had to uh pay attention in the past so that's going to wrap it up for today for today from Ashburn coming up tomorrow we got
