Tony line of work what do you do construction loyalty play a part in the construction business yes you'll see it over and over Jeff you turn your eye one of your tools are missing Tony quick question what are you on about jobs some of us have them some of us make YouTube videos talking about Survivor that's just the way the cookie crumbles but a commenter recently asked which job performs the best on Survivor and I thought that would be some fun might help us figure out who to root for in Survivor 47 so let's see how that goes this is not a simple question to answer there are many steps involved but we're on to the first step Don't We the first step is of course shouting out survive R which is in fact Linked In the description and contains data about every Castaway job and placement in turn making my life just a bit easier now you'd think this would be simple just group Everyone by job calculate the average placement per job and Boom video made but not quite first let's do with the fact that some survivors play more than once I've decided to take the crude approach here I'm simply not counting any returning player performance s sums it up best last time I played like a cop look where it got me this time I'm playing like a criminal and we'll see where it gets me you see on your first time playing you're likely to behave in a way that's informed by your lived experiences or as s says play like a cop if you are a cop but your second time around you've learned a bit more you understand how the game is played and you know what probably did didn't work last time so you likly switch things up or mayhaps play like a criminal there are so many different factors in the Turning player Seasons past relationships public perception General atmosphere I think excluding anyone who isn't on their first playthrough is fine I don't think Adam made a run for the podium because he was a keynote speaker instead of a homeless shelter manager speaking of job titles there have been almost 700 different Survivor contestants over 46 Seasons once you exclude rurys and Survivor loves to cast a wide variety of jobs and I think Debbie had most of them what of these jobs have only been represented once some of my favorite job titles include Albert who is both a baseball and dating the runnerup of the Season coats jtia who is of course a nuclear engineer can't you tell and Julia a race car driver very vanilla that she has like a vanilla personality but I feel like that would be doing a great disservice to the flavor vanilla if we just classify People based on this specific job title the going to get any meaningful data we need to group them why should an Ivy league student and a regular student be classified differently just because being an Ivy league student means you're more likely to come from a place of wealth and that probably impacts your worldviews therefore influencing how you'd approach the game of Survivor it's a really good point but our data is simply too Spar to be able to draw meaningful conclusions if you leave the job titles alone Elizabeth from Island of the idols is classified as an Olympic medalist Katrina from Heroes versus healers versus Hustlers as classified as an Olympian Chris still from gabone is classified as a former Olympic Athlete surely it' be better if we put them all in one category right maybe the same category as all the NFL players which brings us to the next Point how many categories should we have because the data was already in front of me I did this thing called inductive coding which basically just means I looked at the data and made it up as I went along once the first round of classification was done I went through the data again and refine the details primarily recategorizing jobs that have fewer than 10 contestants if I were a real scientist I would get a second person to code the data and then we calculate our krippendorf's Alpha coefficient which shows our level of agreement or maybe we'd use a Cohen's Kappa coefficient but for the purpose of this video I think this will be fine as mentioned before a theme was not valid if fewer than 10 people fit into it arguably I should have made this higher as if a few sit on 11 I decided not to set an upper limit on how many people fit into each category which may have been a mistake but hey that's life these categories are from biggest the smallest management with 68 Castaways these are people who own businesses or are managers of some kind basically anyone whose job title has an extra word of passs to it to make it clear they're slightly more important than me students also with 68 I fit into this category sales and marketing with 65 from elevator salesmen to entrepreneurs anyone who I'm afraid to get into an elevator with artists have 59 we've got actors and writers and not YouTubers that's for sure Hospitality slf food service with with 40 of which 15 of them are bartenders the second most common job on Survivor after students Healthcare with 37 s fans rise up sports with 34 including professional poker players as an aid chess fan I feel I had to include them legal has 30 attorney is the third most common job on Survivor with 12 of them Sports instructors is also 30 it felt weird to include Brad Co pepper in the same category as coat as it really does a disservice to coats so that's why the category exists education has 29 Castaways and for some reason fourth grade teacher and teacher are two separate jobs we then have a bit of a drop off with real estate having 20 Castaways then public service has 19 people like firemen firewoman fire people trades is also 19 including this legendary tire repair man I took my shot I'm playing chest the best way I know how and hopefully I'm a king me law enforcement also has 19 because I didn't want to classify them as either legal or military it seemed reasonable to give them their own category Social Services has 18 agriculture has 17 including some fishermen which I feel they count right clerical has 15 the other category weirdly enough includes a lot of death Gravedigger pet Creator mortician but also stay-at-home parents this category may not be the most homogeneous but it does have 14 people in it Finance also has 14 people in it leg Logistics and transportation has 13 I just find it funny grouping bus drivers and Pilots but hey they both Drive things I'm not legally allowed to military has 12 Castaways which is fewer than I expected Engineering also has 12 and sparked the age-old debate of isn't architect and engineer adventure and outdoor head 12 ranging from zookeeper to riverguide really showcasing how arbitrary any classification is if you really think about it media has 11 these are your news anchors and radio hosts and you YouTubers make sure to like comment and subscribe software also has 11 because even though software engineering is a thing we still get laughed at by other engineers and finally scientists also have 11 Castaways with that I have classified 697 different Castaways neatly into 26 categories I'd say I'm never doing this again but you all know that would be a lie we have 26 arbitrary classifications of jobs but which one is the best if you want to win Survivor I think this is secretly four questions the first one is what job has the highest average placement we simply summing up all placements and dividing by number of Castaways the only category to have an average placement worse than 11th is software now we do have app developer Xander but we've also got Barney and Jess now is the anything to read into this if we go off stereotypes which I don't love doing but isn't that kind of the entire point of the video software people spend a lot of their time indoors staring at screens as a fellow screen steerer I respect it that's one of my favorite pastimes that's how this video was made but it's probably not a great strategy for Survivor now here we have the data for 25th through 2nd I would go through each category individually but I plan to do this four times and we end up with a 2hour long video at minimum but notice how second place has an average of 8.47 no one was able to break the eighth place average which is pretty close to the expected average on a 16 person season in fact anyone with an average placement below 9 we can assume their job is worse than average for your performance on Survivor the one category did break the eight barrier with an average placement of 6.25 we have adventure and outdoor and this is not shocking in the slightest people who spend a lot of their time Outdoors are really good at Survivor wo when you think about it this extends Beyond occupation aie had spent a lot of time spear fishing before Jonathan was clearly physically prepared for the show the show wasn't prepared for zaye Knight in terms of jobs are the likes of Kelly Wigglesworth the Amanda Kimmel Rafe Judkins all really strong players but being now doy is not the be all and end all we all know about s getting up off the couch so clearly while it helps having an outdoorsy job doesn't necessarily mean you do well one problem with this metric is that the mean can be dragged down by one bad performance or dragged up by one good performance so maybe looking at the medium will give us a clearer idea of what's best here's that comparison for you to look at ooh fretty numbers the most dramatic Improvement is in our media personalities they go from an average placement of 8.9 to a median placement of 7 originally being dragged down by Chelsea from Island of the idols and Mari from Millennials versus Gen X clerical got notably hit in the shift going from an average of 10.6 to a median of 13 well you do have Sandra and candra who I'd argue was wearing perfectly reasonable shoes to go on survivor thank you very much can I see your water shoes here all right those are the worst looking water shoes I've ever seen you've also got Laura and Morgan it's a real mix bag notably Adventure Remains the best scoring category it seems like being an adventurous person really is the best bet for being on Survivor or is it let's take a closer look at the category we've got icons like Janet Chrissy Cass Cindy you know what we're missing we're missing people that actually you know win Survivor so let's run our numbers again this time we're on the hunt for the category that produces the highest number of winners and the loser here is quite a few producing zero total winners Adventure engineering software Finance scientist real estate and other have all failed to produce a winner so far in fact only six out of the 26 classifications have produced more than one winner Hospitality has produced two being Michelle and Todd education has also produced two being Tommy and Bob healthare has produced three with Denise Tina and gabler I know he's actually a Salesman but his occupation is listed as heart valve specialist sales has produced four clearly they could sell their case to the jury we've got Brian Natalie white Chris and D student has also produced four which are Fabio maranne Natalie Anderson and Sophie but the winning category has produced nine winners that hang on a second carry the one raised to the nth that's more than twice as many what the heck it's management Richard vpia Yule Earl Kim Wendell era Jam jam and Kenzie who both own salons probably making it the best job for surv in this specific realm that is a shocking amount of winners that's almost 20% of all winners coming from some sort of management background over 20% when you remember that we're excluding returning players that's why law enforcement only has one is it because they're so good at managing themselves and others is it because of some other external reason management is a bit of a weird category because they all have such different jobs so maybe this is all a coincidence but what's even more likely is management producing this many winners simply because it is the largest category so let's answer one more question what job has the highest likelihood of producing a winner to do this we'll take the number of winners and divided by the number of people in the category management still comes out on top with 13% of their contestants going on to be winners students face a pretty big loss only 6% are winners media's One winner is a solid 9% of the population that one winner being Danny so to conclude if you want to do well on average come from an adventure SL outdoorsy occupation that will give you the best chance of going far in the game and therefore improving your chances of coming back for a future season but if you want to win be near the top of the food chain be someone who's used to being in charge be someone who wordss Authority or commands respect when they walk into a room that is the occupation that does best on Survivor but what do you think is there something I missed let me know until next time I've been H Hitman Survivor I see like 11th Place based on my own occupation Miss
