Kevin O'Connell Reacts Live During Vikings at Eagles Preseason Game

Kevin oconnell head coach of the Minnesota Vikings joins us now you know Kevin oconnell the 2012 sideline reporter for am600 koogo working San Diego State University games what's going on there coach guys what's happening we uh you know we're we're in a uh we're in a good spot right now um love the way our teams come out Big Challenge to them PA coming out of the the gates today was we really had been really since half of that Raider game I think we had ourselves a 44 to 15 advantage since that point a lot of the guys that have built that lead have uh come right back out here today and done the same thing so we've stacked on that my challenge now offensively still sustaining the drives and and we've converted a lot of third Downs there's been some good things in the Run game I think jiren Hall's played really well I want to see him come out right now and then defensively keep taking the ball away getting stops want to see guys fly around and make some plays and speaking of different call Tuesday is always a difficult day for you and coaches and Personnel people around the NFL I'm be aware of sneaky conversation here with you guys are rolling six right now got you let's give him some let's give him a hard time let's not make it easy you know likeing you know watch that [Music] yeah well you know if they are you're going to be hearing about it from me so no you guys are doing great man uh so Kevin Tuesday you got to get to 53 and set up the practice squad and know by the way uh 1,147 players are going to be cut by other teams so what what is Tuesday like how difficult is it and what's Tuesday night like for you quac and doo Mena and the rest of the gang looking at all the available players yeah you know long you know we we got a great staff uh PA that will look around the rest of the league but my job first and foremost uh you know is to handle my least favorite day of the entire year coming up on Tuesday handle it the right way these players have done everything that I've asked of them and there's just competitive situations where sometimes even though you want to you can't keep everybody and the way I look at it uh these guys deserve a right to hear how well they've done how well they've competed they've helped build our culture and our team um so I'm going to meet face to face and quy and I will uh you know every single one of those guys we'll be forming our practice squads seeing how we can possibly update our uh update our team and uh upgrade our team I should say uh but there's a lot still to play for in this second half no doubt a new quarterback for the Eagles Tanner mcke second year from Stanford new defensive play caller for Kevin it's Mike saravo the inside linebacker coach uh mck's going to go under Center Kevin's Vikings lead 20-3 play action for the seconde Cardinal hit strip sack ko ko on the mic brings good things Vikings guys we got that ball guys James Lynch Hey Kevin you told us into the game James Lynch Jaylen Redmond uh Levi Drake Rodriguez you wanted to see a lot from those defensive linemen how about that how about Andre Carter right there I mean Andre's been showing up with his length showing up with uh really good pass repertoire off the edge coming out that's the big thing right there you know as an offensive play caller you want to you're down 17 we talk to our guys hey alert for the shot early on in the drive be ready to transition that Rush from stopping the Run on Play action to go get him the quarterback what a start uh to the drive right there fellas to the half that's awesome Here Comes jiren Hall 15 of 21 162 and two running through it Wayne McBride he'll get some chunk yardage there second down Pete and Coach defensively turnovers today have been great I consider that fourth and one lack of conversion to turnover as well but that's something that's been emphasized and going into the season last year we the Vikings struggled with that with turning the football over early on those first three weeks have you seen the change I mean defensively I think the guys have gotten the message and offensively you guys have also received that message have you not yeah I think a couple things on that Pete I think it's been you know really since about the fifth week of last season uh as far as ball carriers are concerned um I think of one we had in the second half against the Broncos that was a critical fumble by one of our bats when we were in field goal range but outside of that one there just hasn't been a lot of ball carriers putting the ball on the ground because it's something that we emphasize over and over and over again it's how we practice and I think that's the other key part of it how is the defense sharpening us every single day to make sure we're not turning the football over by how we practice cuz if there's bad ball Security in practice there's going to be in games and uh I think that's why you've seen us come out and play some clean football in the preseason Jaren Hall hands it off and uh MCB gets back some of that yardage there is a new center in the game for the Vikings he is Matt syri just signed here a few days ago another flag yeah we're going to have something on us here legal formation like I don't know if we had everybody we needed on the line of scrimmage 82 from the previous spot thank you and Kevin if you ever need to get after Adrien Hill he is a master's of science from John's Hopkins University he was a NASA contractor at Goddard space flight center might be able to tease him about that or something if there's a call from like out of space Ben L Adrian honestly adrien's one of my favorite officials we had these guys at our practices all week so we we've been getting a great rapport with them hey hey PA check this out probably going to try to screen here to Debo get back on track down see if we can execute got a block 57 will be the key McBride screen right we not only blocked him we probably held him a little bit call look at M McBride toet tapping the sidelines yeah and you can see 57 looked right at the official like come on man like you can't you didn't call that hold those are the blocks right there you get that block clean that thing could be out the gate against some of these you know this is really Vic fangio's defense which a lot of Vikings fans remember we were running a version of it our first year so we kind of learned you know there's a lot of air in the coverage can we get some different quick passes off I think West Phillips has done an unbelievable job in this game I think we're seven to n on third down in the first half so we're going to get a chance right here to maybe work against some man coverage jiren Hall couple of receivers left one right McBride flares right flat keep your feet up McBride 105 kep his feet first and goal for the Vikings Peter and for coach here's you look at Dwayne McBride here's a kid that had over 1700 yd rushing in college he had two receptions his entire senior year so he's equal the number of receptions my my question is how hard is it for a back to learn to be a receiver when he's just been carrying the football all throughout College there's so many nuances to the pass game at this level with running but it's sometimes just barely a catching the ball thing and he's worked really hard at it and it's starting to show up a little bit how we get physical down here PA run it right at him there it is McBride stood up well they're playing de a long time holy cow hasn't played a game since November he's the one to stopped McBride and it's going to be second and goal what's what's Wes going to call here like what what are you guys going to do to get into the end zone he's calling it right now so I'm actually listening to him call it in my left ear thank goodness your voice is so beautiful PA cuz comparing it to Western I'd say you you've probably got the face and voice for radio Wes on the other hand you know he's working on both right now but I think he's going to either call uh himself a keeper type play right [Music] here you you might have a chance for zero pressure oh so that was so that's what you think you know second down inside the five as a play caller I'd be thinking about okay he's it's going to be some sort of man coverage but what's my answer if they try to bring everybody via zero coverage like that you'd love to not have a guy running through your backside a gap let's see what we got here I got a wristband number all right so we're going to empty him out here fellas we're going to empty him out little quick hitter pure progression I think it's either going to be let's see what we got oh look they're going to play this thing out of zone right here this thing should go to 49 those things where obviously big hits sometimes you never quite know you're you're clearly worried about when you take a direct kind of launch shot to the head and neck area like that first and foremost the flag is one thing but Jaren help uh would be what I ultimately care about his head is fine he is fine he does have a little uh you know just a little leg kind of issue right now kind of working through it over there more than likely uh we're probably looking at Matt carral coming next series well coach let's just start right there then with Matt caral I mean we don't really know much about him we can kind of do a little research on his his Short History here in the league but what do you expect out of him when he comes in and then how do you how do you start making play calls for a guy that has been here about a week yeah you know Matt's a guy we did a lot of work on coming out um few years back talented he's got some you know really good arm Talent from an arm strength standpoint you know he's always working his accuracy trying to work his footwork we haven't had him very long so today Ben is more about just letting him just go play football and you know letting him just not worry so much about the details but just go play fast go play it's about play calls getting the guys out of the Huddle uh making sure we're in and out play clock all the procedural things that you got to do as a quarterback before you ever even get a chance to just go run plays so Wes is going to be calling it for him we got a shrunken down menu and we'll try to see if we can get him going a little bit M incomplete hey with the Dante Jones call in the first half now inside linebacker coach Mike saravo the second half what have you noticed you know granted with a limited menu in preseason Kevin but what have you noticed about their play calling I think they've done a nice job you know they're really a defensive play callers are always just trying to figure out the rhythm of you know what the offensive play caller is doing hey when can I cuz you you know you can pressure runs you can pressure passes you try to anticipate what you're going to get to get the best possible call I think we're going to get some man coverage right here mcke floats out to the right throws it away it's incomplete on third down Jaylen Williams on the coverage Jay Ward by his side you guys had Jaylen Williams return a kick earlier yeah I saw that I uh I wasn't uh I'd be lying to you PA if I knew that was going to be happening that early in the game U but clearly the second I saw it I uh I envisioned uh all of our ball security we drill we drill through for our whole team because really uh up until that point the only time Jaylen had his hands on a football was an interception in practice first punt of the game Braden man Fife Texas A&M takes it from Ricky Lavado and here's lucky Jackson who's had a nice game ey balls it oh yeah turned it up to the 25 more with Kevin oconnell Miss played a few plays last week against Cleveland formerly a third round pick in the 2022 draft by the Carolina Panthers spent all of 2022 on IR uh just this year was with the Bur stallions of the usfl and uh last played in a preseason last year and um with the Carolina Panthers went 28 for 47 zero touchdowns and an interception he completed 59% of his passes Matt syri is the center he's been here 5 days and the handoff goes to Dwayne McBride who's been here a year in change but but that is the preseason right Kevin I mean sync's been here like 5 days Justin Hall has a touchdown he's been here 5 days the quarterback's been here N9 days and if you use Mo IAM he's been here 48 Hours yeah we've uh my coaching staff's been working some overtime as of late you know getting these guys ready to go but uh I just love seeing guys I don't know whether it's my you know my journey or what but I was that I was that guy multiple times showing up and having to play and uh you know getting a chance to you know have a real chance to go play football syri McBride driving Birds near the first down third and short B you know coach we we had a chance to hear you talk to Matt caral during the commercial break about him going in and it was this it was just like pure almost like youth football the little talk that you had with him and we just all loved it up here because you basically just said hey man just go out there and have fun like why was that the approach you take with Matt caral in this situation yeah I think Ben the biggest thing is letting him just go play um not overthink anything other than just pitching and catching and playing quarterbacks so we're going to get a little concept over here 3x one getting a fire zone right into it didn't pick it up on that big BL that's that was smack right there we call that smack pressure basically s in the mic and you know ends up being somewhere if your slide is going one way quarterback's got to try to make that right that's a lot to ask of Matt you know in his first drop back pass right there to make protection call to block that up unfortunate for him and but you know what gets hit gets the cobwebs off a little bit he'll be just fine we'll get this ball right back and we'll roll and Coach that's that's kind of just not necessarily about that play but in general that's what the hot route is all about is you the Eagles have had six possessions this game they've gone fumble field goal stop on Downs then halftime fumble and a punt uh the defense with Dante Jones and and um Mike Cavo calling it granted you know different type of personnel but uh you can't ask for more than that right no they're doing a great job and just across the board uh I think you've seen the strength show up you know we we're rolling some D linemen that can all play um you're seeing our secondary show good disguise Corner playing good outside we're making it hard on them here comes Bo RoR let's see what he can do mcke with a hand off to Kendall Milton College free agent from Georgia Nao hey coach you know since we're talking about the defense we had a player Spotlight during the game on Levi Drake Rodriguez your guys' draft picks so what have you liked about him so far in Camp Ben he's just you probably played with a few guys you know throughout your career just those High motor guys that maybe you know he's got good technique he's got some twitch for a big body but he just plays so hard and strains and has fallen into some plays but coming to life you know they're double teaming him right there but let see what I'm talking about he gets his hands on a ball to km that thing and you know that that that could be an easy completion for an earned first down for a struggling offense right now instead you're staring down the barrel of another third and longer uh we can play some man coverage right here I wouldn't be surprised if swerve that's what we call him swerve wouldn't be surprised if he plays a little man coverage let these guys you know take the air out of the coverage go put their hands on people and that's exactly what it looks like we're going to get right here or he's the inside linebacker coach you can bring um uh Gant and um whomever is next to him as mcke takes the snap screen got to get out there look at the look at Levi though I mean that's I mean that's a great job by Jordan right there I mean he's in man coverage on that back so he should be ready to make that play but I just love seeing 50 we call him stack monsters watch him run out of the stack right here bang second he sees it just you see the hair going crazy and it just shows up on tape every single day activity along the defensive line fellas is it doesn't always equal sacks and and stats that people see but how about a fourth down right here man coverage again mck facing man coverage and the blitz floats out to the right runs 45 and yep he do for the first down he got it by about probably a foot and a half first down Eagles I mean hold on fellas hold on we might get a challenge here oh he's got in his I hear it I hear it right you think [Applause] so I think he's short of that thing fellas we're going to go ahead and get ourselves the football back right here all right coach could you walk us through that process then right then on a on a play that just happens who are you talking to I think uh and then what do you need to hear from the guys I think he shorter line to gain significantly um you know as far as you looking at that as a give himself up situation at all no so I still think he's short probably a half yard okay that was sweet hey so now the question is hold on a sec fellas hey r challenging s of line well one thing is certain I can never be the the person to sit upstairs and be responsible for helping the head coach with with spots and challenges and stuff CU I think I'm over for one well you know having helped Mike Ty out with that same thing you just you Challenge and Kevin was right which means if I ever had a chance of sitting in that coach's room and being your conduit to challenges well I just got fired cuz I thought he got a first down well be you know uh exactly what I uh what I asked you um in that moment PA was that's what I would ask Ryan Cordell upstairs and it just so happened that uh both you and him heard uh me in that moment and uh I I went ahead and listened to Ryan uh versus you but no those are the things right so I'm standing just to put it in perspective I was about 25 I'm trying to stay away from everybody on the headset cuzz I'm talking to you guys about 25 yards behind the play I can't really tell from where I am so you're relying on the replay system the voices upstairs and we got that one moral got a chance at the Low cross right there what ah flag is that a hold on the back end yeah yeah that's awesome I think I hear Justin Jefferson screaming behind you yeah he's he's trying to get involved here he knows I'm on TV he's a little jealous he's used to being mik himself basically about better part of the last year so you see him over here on the now Hey Kevin okay so play clock begins at 40 they huddle up like what happens from here up to the snap so Wes is calling the play right now so now the coach the quarterback system he calls it how fast well I I hate seeing the ball get moved like that hey can I get a reset hey hey there you go thank you there we go so I just when they move the ball like that and I see the clock below 20 I'd love to get a reset like we got otherwise that's probably going to be delayed all right there's a good Zone play keep your feet so so hey hey hey so PA the the biggest thing is like right now west is being told to down in distance second and Eight Second and N whatever it is you've got to basically have a thought in your mind for every possible scenario hey earn first down do I want to go Tempo earn first down do I want to try to activate a different Personnel grouping in there cuz you got to call for the subs uh or it's going to be a gain of one gain of three gain of four and all those things could justify a different play on the call sheet Matt Corral a quarterback Cooper de jeene second round Iowa Corner still in the game Corral throws left hung it up there a little bit caught by lucky and they're going to say that uh he was down yep yep it's all the way on the other side of the field how do you handle something like that well you you're kind of just relying on the guys upstairs that are sitting right over the top of that that may be that's probably not worth a challenge from Nick so we're going to go no huddle right here see if we can maybe take a shot Blitz oh no no no there we go INE we're going to have to clean up some protection right here for the young fell we got some new guys in there put it put it put it hey coach real quick you were talking about just sort of the uh the gymnastics that you guys go through in the play calling you obviously have to know situations and personnel and all that stuff but how often are you guys looking at individual matchups as the game plays out maybe you see a corner or safety that's is not having a day how do you adjust that play call to to match up against that player yeah I think looks like they're going to challenge this thinking it might be a fumble in pass if it was a fumble yeah did you get a good look at it I did not yeah me neither I off yeah no I I'm feeling it right now man I'm used to being able to complain to two people not just one so we uh the end the refs are actually working a mechanism right now as if the lead referee uh sustained an injury so they're all working off of a six-man crew so the visiting sideline only has one uh you know side judge over with us right now and uh they they kind of have to work different angles that's probably why they missed the the hit on jiren down there in the Red Zone but it's a lot for these guys to work through when they're used to working with seven guys but yeah what Ben was asking earlier is absolutely a valid valid question because I think this whole game is a matchup league and that's what makes on a normal Sunday a lot of my job is figuring out exactly what the game plan is to Justin Jefferson and then whether it's a match up somewhere else on our football team whether it's Jordan or TJ or Jaylen Naylor or maybe it's a back out of the back field I'm going to try to activate some things uh to get those guys going but then more importantly how do I want to activate Justin to beat the double teams uh that he's seeing and and that's where the game goes and Coach a lot of that some of that is that there's a difference in adjustments between in series and in between series as well right I mean as far as Tendencies or making Corrections on the field what are the differences between between an iner hey it's going to be [Music] uh so this the the challenge here involves jiren Hall of being his arm being hit right before he unfurled the pass and was hit by I don't understand how a ball can go 20 yard down the field be a fumble teron Jackson 75 rolling on the field was an incomplete pass all right first yeah so so PA this is uh this is going to give us a nice nice opportunity fans at home might not like this you know not getting the first down and but I'm looking for a big time we call this a sky punt right here yeah where we're right around the 50 uh I know the analytics World loves to go for it as much as possible but field position field position is still a thing in this league so what I want to see Ryan Wright do right now is put one high in the sky inside the 10 let's see our Gunners it looks like we've got uh mlo and Jaylen Williams out there in a one-on-one situation let's see if we can get down and down this thing inside the 10 and keep applying pressure to that Eagles offense that's not uh exactly hitting on all cylinders right now Ryan rght plopped two inside the 20 at Cleveland he has three inside the 20 this preseason [Applause] [Music] overend deine calls for a fair catch at the 12 it's inside the 20 that's not bad no you're you're definitely like right there what you're definitely trying to avoid is just that side Winder off the side of the foot that ends up in plus 20 or so anything inside I'm going to be greedy PA I'm going to say I wanted that inside the 10 um but either way they got to go 88 yards right now uh Kevin uh Sam darnold is uh is on the television right now we're talking about him on the radio but uh how have things gone with Sam through training camp and U up to the season yeah Sam's done a great job um I think people forget sometimes just the pure physical talent that Sam has as a former third pick in the draft and you know he can make every throw he's gotten really comfortable in our offense and taking advantage of you know getting the throw to some really good players and behind the continuity of our offensive line I've really enjoyed coaching Sam and and uh I think he's going to get off to a fast start this season and and really excited about [Applause] him hey coach I don't know if you know Mike quck former Philadelphia Eagles wide receiving great I had a chance to talk to him at halftime number one he's a big fan of yours but number two he's a huge fan of trisan Jackson and the one route that he got himself open on it was kind of a post with a comeback Lov the way that he ran it but we love Tristan Jackson I mean watch him in Cleveland in the Red Zone he's just doing so many things right I wanted to get thoughts on how on on his preseason yeah so Tristan is a guy that I actually uh I actually kind of he was one of my first calls after the 2020 Draft when I was with the Rams we got him to sign with us after the draft as a priority free agent did had a great Camp it was very competitive and uh decided to go join I think he went to Minnesota after that um and then to get the opportunity to coach him here he knows our system he can play three spots get your hands up ah uh-oh but yeah Tristan's a guy that uh you know I've become a big fan of he's had a great teamp Jay Ward just saved the day yeah he did that uh that reception goes to Griffin uh Hebert who is in his first full year from Louisiana Tech guys you know we'll kind of stick with the offense here you know the one thing I think has been a huge Improvement in these last two preseason games you guys the ability to run the football not just with the running backs but your offensive line just ripping through the defense and opening up some seams and holes obviously that's an area that you guys are looking for but what is the challenge and how how do you uh how do you describe the Improvement so far and just the offensive mentality on the line yeah that's just it it's got to be a mentality first and foremost we got to do our job as coaches and make sure we're hitting good combinations with good angles and technique in the Run game uh but running the football Ben in the NFLs you know it's a mentality thing you know you're going to have you should be running schemes where you can have a hat on a hat you know for the most part outside of when you're getting pressures and things like that and the offense can kind of take care of that by scheme but it's not about scheme as much as it is having really good technique fundamentals and then a play style to match that and that's what our young guys have done this preseason second and six mcke into a tight window close to the first down at about the 35 yd line and that's EJ Jenkins a tight end for Nick serani Philadelphia Eagles gain of six my man's in his first full year from Georgia Tech that that was a nice pass by mcke right there yeah tight window he's a big tall kid stford kid you know he's going to know where to go with the football and we got to get a little pressure on him here a little bit if they want to spread this thing out and start turning it into seven on seven let's send a safety right at them right now and here comes s so mcke dumps it right caught and stopped immediately by Dwight mccl it'll be a gain of about five or six boys and Coach I it's everything goes the way it should you should be undefeated in the preseason which I've always felt winning is important no matter what talk about the home field advantage and what that should mean and what you want it to mean and then how do you go about making the players aware of it yeah I think that's a that's a critical thing it's a critical thing for is that going to be what they right there they hit the quarterback I mean a lot of Flags today holy cow I think I think we might have hit the quarterback in the face right there if I leave I yeah it's one of the things that you know bites you in the rear end sometimes I'm fighting for penalties for our quarterbacks and now they're going to call it close for theirs oh I got the face mask pass yeah but I you know I definitely want to that's it forunate penalty right there but we'll get a chance to see our defense swell up and get a stop I want to Circle back to that though guys cuz I can't tell you coached a lot of places played a lot of places um you know I use that play term lightly but um our fans and what US Bank Stadium is I mean it is in my opinion it's a oneof one thing from our uh the energy from the time you walk in the buildings and the time you leave I mean it is I absolutely love our fans I love our fan base and I love what they bring to help us play winning football hand off up the middle and stopped after just a couple of yards there that um that was Tyler monoa Tyler monoa on the stop Ben so I'm going to take you guys inside one of the jobs of the head coach in the second half if you see our sideline right now I've got Jonathan gernard on the field I've got I stepping on the field I got murf here there's Coach Josh HS right when I needed him right there the get Kevin yeah man coverage right there in his HP pocket good pitch and catch but that's what you do when you play a little tighter guys you force people to execute the pass game at a high level so here we go now I mean this is really classic if I know Brian Flores well fourth down in the Red Zone I'd have a play call with some pressure ansers don't know if he's going to go into his bag of Max defensive penalty because I I think those are important to talk about from a defensive standpoint when when you have a guy that makes an aggressive penalty you know that wasn't something where he was being lazy he wasn't being lazy with his feet or reading the wrong thing he was just trying to bat the ball down and inadvertently got his hand in the face mask how do you guys coach that up and what do you guys talk about as a defense and an individual player yeah you just got to have an understanding of you know technique fundamentals and then when things like that happen how do you police yourself how do you police yourself to make sure that you you know are just playing within the playing within the rules those are going to happen though especially as fast as that guy plays Kevin that
