Drake Maye is Moving up the Depth Chart | | Foxboro Rush Ep. 18

yes welcome into Foxboro Rush George B you're here with Travis Thomas T good to have you back my man how you beeny good to be back and you know what George I was just talking to a buddy of mine we were eating barbecue together and I said you know covering the Celtics during this finals run is fantastic but I can't wait until it's football season man I am focused on football season Travis already moving on in September I like it I'm still looking forward towards his finals run hey it's good to be back I'll tell you this you're talking about having barbecue finally finally finally got my dose of Terry black out in Austin over the weekend the food coma after it is so worth it and there's nothing after crushing a bunch of Coors Light all afternoon in the Sun have some Terry blacks the nap after is some of the best you can have you are so Texas right now you don't need melatone in or magnesium or any of that just have some Terry black ribs brisket potato salad all that it's good so Texas man it fits you well my friend thank you my friend all right we got a jpack show for you guys today Shan Maguire ness.com is joining us we got the latest from Drake M his progress he's with Alex Vel including backup reps we rank the NFC North quarterbacks and we get into who's overpaid who's underpaid throughout the NFL but first off let's bring in ness.com Shawn Maguire who's been covering the Patriots all throughout OTAs this offseason Sean how we doing today my man not too bad George how are you good good good so Sean has two articles out when does Alex vanell see Patriots Drake May becoming a starter and studs Duds after the Patriots open the media otaa sessions go to net.com to catch those Sean I want to start with that Alex Vel talking about Drake May what did you hear from the Patriots OC when he was asked about the timeline for the Patriots number three overall pick well I I first off I appreciate the plug um but essentially what it was is he kind of didn't answer the question um not a huge surprise when you hear uh you know Elliot wolf and gerod Mayo uh kind of said a lot of the same things as those guys and essentially the answer is I don't know uh the answer you know pretty much we're not gonna he's not gonna come out and say yeah Drake's gonna be in week four Drake's gonna be in week six it's just that was never going to be how it played out so essentially what he said is just it has it's more of a feel thing and when we feel like he's ready when we feel like he's um you know stacking days together stacking reps together that sort of thing then it'll uh you know he'll Elevate up the depth chart and it was a little funny that he said that I don't know half hour before practice um because a half hour later it went from Drake May being the number three to Drake May being the number two and at the time it was more of like a essentially when Vin Pelt was asked the question it was like when is Drake May gonna be the number two and he just never came out and said like you'll see it in a half hour from now um it was like you know when he's ready but uh he's clearly ready Sean let me ask you this because we talk about okay first string reps backup third string they're moving this guy around a lot you know you know in terms of first second or third string and then let's also remember there's three other quarterbacks competing with this kid I I mean do you look at this as maybe there he's not getting enough reps to truly develop or do you think this is just kind of normal and this is what it is you get your reps and you do what you can with what you're given cuz I look at this a lot of young quarterbacks come in and and I know it's a little unfair to to put you know being the Savior on their backs but like this guy splitting all these reps with all these other quarterbacks I'm like well how's he supposed to develop if he's not getting as many reps as as possible yeah no I think it's a fair question um I think so Gerard was asked it I believe it was right before the second um OTA practice that was open to the media and he was essentially asked just that like you know are you nervous that Drake is not getting enough reps and at the time he said no and so I think you know before before yesterday really when Drake was the third quarterback um I think there was more of an argument about it and it was really more like it was just confusing you know why is a quarterback that you just took at number three why is he your third string quarterback behind jacobe brassette and Bailey zappy now you know that's changed and you know so he was behind um only brassette yesterday he was in front of zappy and Joe Milton was back and Joe Milton was rid in four as well um like he was the first practice so I don't I'm not too concerned about the Reps thing now um I think the way that gerro said a few weeks ago about kind of you know entering training camp the roster is going to be paired down the quarterback group is going to be paired down I think that's makes sense you know at that point if you're you know if you have four quarterbacks going into training camp and deep into the training camp I don't think that's the best way to do it but at this point I don't think it's a huge concern um he saw so I actually wrote it down um in one of the stories it was brassette had 25 reps yesterday and um Drake had 14 so he saw enough um you know I think when it comes down to training camp if you can get it down to three quarterbacks and then um you know he's seeing more of those um and also there's times where during training camp and it was actually the case last week as well that they you know they were able to they had three quarterbacks and they had two on one field and one on the other so if you're in that kind of um situation I guess and you can give all of the whatever it was seven on seven or all the 11 on 11 on one field if you can give all that to Drake I think that makes a lot of sense and it kind of it gets him more reps at the time so I do think it would be I think it is important to go from four to three going into training camp you've seen Dr May from the start of rookie mini camp now through OTAs yes next week mini camp and then training camp will eventually kick off but what have you seen as far as progress for May it's important he's getting those more reps because I agree why is he taking number three starter rep reps or backup reps right get him number two get him the second most I get jobe's a guy week one get Drake may as many reps as possible in seven and seven and 11 on 11s but what have you seen from him as far as progress being made for his development yeah I mean so and Alex vanel talked about this yesterday as well um you can tell like the footwork is coming along and I know that was like a huge you know that was a big thing um kind of coming in you know pre-draft and right after the draft as well that was really a criticism of his and I actually I remember remember hearing Brian Hoyer on a podcast say pretty much it's easy to solve and then I actually talked to Drake May um College coordinator chip Lindsay at North Carolina and he said the same thing he's like you know I I think that Drake May will be fine he'll be able to figure out the footwork when when the time comes and I do think you've kind of seen some of that and you know that was one of the things that Alex Van Pelt just stressed yesterday he said you know it it's almost I think the word was it surprised him it's it surprised him to see how um you know quickly Drake May has come along when it comes to the footwork and another thing he talked about was you know controlling the Huddle and um you know calling plays in the Huddle so I would say that those and Drake mentioned that as well how you that's another area that he's looking to come along and looking to develop some so I I would say the footwork is certainly something you know the accuracy I think is um he had two interceptions yesterday so maybe you know that that has a little bit of progress he's still got some ways to go with that and you know everyone you talk to gerage or um vanel all those guys are all talking about how pretty much their most important thing is the decision- making so that's another thing that they've really stressed and you know based on at least one of the picks yesterday it wasn't it wasn't a great decision that he threw it so I would say he's got a little ways to go with that as well but again that's all those are all you know he's two weeks in you know so those are all things that are going to come um but I do think that you've seen some progress in a few of the areas smmack I want to ask you this from your perspective that you you've seen you knew it was coming that from your perspective that you've seen with Dy eyes but also what you're hearing talk to me about Joe Milton's development because look all this Drake May stuff is cool I'm with it I understand number three pick overall I get it but every time I see a video of this guy Joe Milton I mean he looks like an action figure he's got a rocket launcher arm I I mean what's what's up with the development of him I'm not saying Drake May isn't great and I'm looking forward to the Drake May era I want to get to it ASAP Rocky okay I don't want to wait but at the same time I'm curious to know the development of this athletic freak that the Patriots have at quarterback and Joe Milton what are you hearing and what are you seeing um so second open practice last week uh Joe Milton wasn't there it was only the um brassette and zappy and Drake May yesterday Joe Milton was back but he did not see any reps in the final team period of 11 11 um so I don't know it's kind of hard it's kind of hard to tell he hasn't you know you haven't seen him in a little while um that sort of thing and so yesterday it was um gerro was kind of asked the same thing you know first impressions what have you seen from him how have you seen him develop and the first thing he said is like everyone you know he has a Canon Canon for an arm yeah but he really stressed the decision making and how he's how uh Joe Millan has a little ways to go with that so I I would say that you know I don't think the Patriots are going to cut Joe Millan I do think as I mentioned last time when I was on with you guys I do think it's going to be bayy zappy who is the one out but in terms of you know until he gets more reps in in the seven on sevens in the 11 on 11s it it's kind of hard to tell at this point and um I mean the arm Talent is crazy so if you're asking me for one thing I would say that certainly jumps off the page it's you know it's very obvious um he was saying yesterday how he he can throw the ball you know 70 yards or 75 yards and you can see it um but in terms of like the real development I I would say he still got um still got a little ways to go with that as far as as it goes for who's going to be the week one starter and should be until Drake May earns a job and literally just takes it all on his own what have you SE from jacobe brette how's his command of the offense looked because this is a guy that comes in the only one with past experience of Alex velt system obviously going with him being back with him in the Cleveland Brown days but how is jacobe BR set look and it's you know execution of the offense but also him as a leader because this is the guy that is a starter and there is going to be a point we're inching closer to kickoff in September you need that guy to be playing well for this team to succeed early in the season before it's Drake May's team yeah definitely and I actually so in the studs and Duds that you guys um graciously Nam dropped earlier he was he was one of the studs and I I think he was maybe by far you know the most polished of the quarterbacks that we've seen and it's just you can see he's you know not only a veteran but he has experience in the offense you know he has experience with the footwork and Ben pelt's scheme and all that so he has he entered with a leg up and it was very clear um over the first three pra over the last three practices and I'm sure it'll be the case um next week as well at mandatory mini camp that he is a clear number one he's a clear-cut starter he's seeing um many more reps it was he actually outre both Drake May and Bailey zappy combined yesterday he saw 25 um like I mentioned earlier Drake's off 14 and bayy got 10 so um you know he he's in line and yesterday during the um seven on seven portions um it it was a strong you know it was a strong period for all of them you know for for Drake and um for jacobe as well all of them though did struggle in the 11 on 11s and it was the defense was just the defense had its way with the offense you know it was when the pass rushers out there you wouldn't think that in a non-padded practice that you know these defensive linemen are wrecking the entire drill or anything like that and that's exactly what it was and you know with the pass rush and then the receivers just couldn't create separation so um you know I know that's not exactly it is tied to jacobe brasset and it is tied to Drake May um it's not like you know in a stat or anything like that but you can clearly tell how those guys um kind of were hindered by the fact that the receivers couldn't create separation so in terms of your question about Kobe I I think he has been um definitely the best of all the quarterbacks that are competing um I you know he's he's more accurate he uh the footwork I think is a big thing you know the command of the of the team and of the Huddle and all that sort of stuff you can you can clearly tell that he is the veteran in the room and they've set it straight up you know Van Pelt made it very clear that you know jacobe brassette is our starter and Drake May is coming along and that's how he put it yesterday and um so I I think you know I'm not exactly sure when um Drake May will kind of unseat uh brassette but I think it's going to be a lot longer for him to unseat brassette than it took him to unseat bayy zappy as a number two uh I want to ask you this I I kind of want to piggyback off of George's question about Alex Van Pelt has he talked about game planning or play calling the differences with brassette and with Drake May here's the reason I'm asking because look now with all due respect to jacobe brassette he's not running away from you know my six-year-old daughter the guy is not Fleet of foot at all Drake May is an athlete he's going to scramble he's going to make plays with his legs so I just wonder in terms of play calling and scheming has has Alex velt talked about that at all or if not you know what's sort of your gut I mean is he one of those coordinators where it's like my playbooks my Playbook or is he going to cater to the styles of these quarterbacks because Drake May is completely different than jacobe brassette in terms of athleticism and that sort of skill set so to answer your question it it has not come up he hasn't mentioned that he hasn't been asked about it um but yeah I agree I think the way that you've a lot of the things you hear and you know when Van Pelt was hired um and over the last few weeks and everything like that is he does he caters to who he has and so I think he's going to kind of cater to the weapons or I don't know about lack of weapons if that's too harsh but yeah um you know I think he's going to kind of cater to the players as opposed to anything else and it is a lot different you know I I understand the difference between jacobe and Drake may but at the same time you don't want you don't want to throw Drake May in and all of a sudden haven't be scrambling around the whole time either so it is kind of you know you want that sort of pocket presence when it comes to the both and we have all this quarterback talk going down the guys that are catching the balls that they're throwing this is what worries me now have you seen anything actually stand out to you about this receiving group and maybe what stands out to you is that they're bad because still as constructed right now this is a bottom five bottom 10 receiving group in the NFL but has anyone jumped out at all out of the wide receivers and shown some report if any with brassette or Drake May yeah definitely the one who has jumped out is um demaro Douglas pop Douglas he just Drake may actually had a funny quote about it how you can't guard him in a phone booth and I thought that was a really you know good way to put it and it's just he he's so crafty he's so you know kind of a quick twitch sort of thing and um he just creates separation and I would say he's the only one that consistently has created separation among the receivers and yesterday was a great example he had um he had at least three touchdowns in the seven on seven again the offense was a lot better in seven on seven than it was in 11 on 11 um but yeah pop out he had three touchdowns at least um I think one hit the ground but that could probably be debated um for which would have been his fourth touchdown and it was with it was with jacobe it was with Drake and it was with bayy zappy as well and it's just he you know he creates something and he actually zappy missed him or didn't throw to him one time when he could have had another one so you know he just like I said he just he really creates separation really well you know just so you know Twitchy and Shifty and all that sort of thing so I would say he is by far the one who is step like stuck out the most uh I also think during the first two practices not so much yesterday but taekwon Thorton looked pretty well looked pretty good but you know we say that and you know I've actually had you know conversations here in the office with um Keegan as well and a lot of the times now is the time where taekwon stands out you know you're not in pads you're in shorts you're in t-shirts I mean if I mean he he might be one of the best flag football players ever I mean if he was if he was to go in that like you know that's obviously a little bit a a little bit of a stretch but he's what I'm trying to say is he's he's much better when it comes to um you know no pads and that sort of thing and you know these seven on seven th sorts of things and then when you throw the pads on he hasn't been as good so um you know we'll see if that continues or we'll see if taon can kind of you know put that in the past sort of thing you know and if he can become more of a um you know a physical you know he's put on some muscle he's put on some size all that sort of stuff so we'll see how much that'll help but I would say to answer your question George that it would definitely be um demaro Douglas who is the one that stands out and a lot of the other guys are kind of a lot of the same yeah I'm a big pop Douglas fan I don't I don't look until taquan shows me something in a game I'm not buying all that putting on weight and all that nonsense I mean it's been hiso since he got into the league and since he was drafted he looks great without pads on because he's fast and he runs a great straight line I'm not interested in the underwear Olympics with this kid but the you know pop Douglas is someone I am a fan of I just don't know and I think all of us feel the same way he doesn't feel like a true number one wide receiver but he has a chance I think to be a special number two or even a third option in terms of Weaponry let me ask you this in covering stuff just cut on that I'm not even saying so much that he's a number one I'm just saying he might be this team's number one yeah yeah for sure yeah I die inside of you I mean he's right though who the hell else George KJ Osborne who terrible at the Vikings last year please yeah um let me ask you this in terms of what you'll be looking for so as we get out of OTAs and we start gearing up for training camp what is sort of your takeaway from the OTAs that you're going to go you already know you're going to go into training camp looking for this looking for this specific thing obviously I'm sure Drake May's development is a big one but give us a couple other ones as well yeah just I I mean I was going to say the same thing obviously number one is Drake May um but after that I think it's got to be the offensive line I just okay it was such an unimpressive uninspiring I mean it was just the group is it's just not good and it's like all you know all the questions we you know we've how many times have we talked about amongst ourselves I mean and it's it's not like it's a secret you know the the team entered the offseason with offensive line being a major issue and they really did not do a ton about it you know besides David Andrews the starting center besides Mike onwenu the starting right uh right tackle they have at you know all the other positions are up in the air right now and it's it's crazy you know it's it's like a I mean you got so many different guys playing left tackle you got so many you know rotating at guard and it's just there's I don't know I you know so maybe maybe it's like you know seeing the cohesion among the group or maybe seeing you know hopefully someone sticks out especially at left tackle I mean like we said you know Chuck is he was starting the first two days um yesterday when we were there he was not there um an wenu also was not there so they had Calvin Anderson playing left tackle with the starting group yesterday and they had Kaden Wallace playing right tackle with the starting group yesterday and which was I thought a little strange as well because you know you talk about they talked about having you know Kaden Wallace be maybe the starting left tackle this year so on a day that the starting left tackle is not there why do you switch him to right tackle right it was perplexing but and that's what that's what I think the Brilliance of this team is and I'm saying Brilliance very sarcastically you drafted someone in Kaden Wallace who was a career right tackle played right tackle in high school played right tackle for three years in college and you claim he only played right tackle because Olu fash was at left whatever you bring him in and you go that's the plan at left tackle I I think it's brilliant the only thing I'll give them is that they have Alex Vel talk to you before practice and not after because the question to ask is why if Kaden Wallace is your starting left tackle or a guy that can be your left tackle why is he even taking reps at right tackle you know it's going to me Mike on wenu there at right tackle give Galvin Anderson the Reps at left tackle that's fine because you need as much depth there but why doesn't Kay Wallace take the Reps at left tackle I know you don't have the answer Sean because all three of us are on the same page what are you doing with your left tackle position because Cole strange may not play week one and your quarterback and jacobe brassette has to make it to week eight if you want your timeline would Drake made a work Sean thank you for being a sounding board so I guess I ask you this how the hell did kayada Wallace look at right tackle because he better look good at right tackle if he's not even playing left tackle look what you've done Sean you got him all fired up now that's right I teed that one up better than I ever could have imagined I guess um I mean how do he look at right tackle the entire offensive line look that great love it I don't know how else we five jacobe Brett's dead Drake May starting all his bad habits come back it's all about the offensive line with this team and I get it their Patchwork Cole strange isn't there Mike on wenu isn't there you have David Andrews in city so you don't know you're it's just it's it's a mess it's this and this is what I think it's and again to this point in the show fans have to be aware of and that's my thing with Drake May if your offensive line looks good by week 11 12 play him and he's ready but my biggest concern offensive line sucks so the whole offensive line looked bad and shout out to the defensive line I guess no I I think the exact same thing and one thing I'll also mention is gerro I would say kept the door open on maybe signing someone off the open market someone who doesn't have a job right now which fine I'm glad I'm glad he's keeping the door open because he they need to I mean but at the same time like you know we're going to be entering training camp and they they're still looking for answers at left tackle so I think that's just I think it's crazy but just to go back quick George what you just said I think my biggest thing with um Drake may you know starting that whole timeline sort of thing is you have to see how the offensive line Looks and if the offensive line Looks like crap I don't think you can throw Drake May in there on you know week six or week eight and just have him get beat up for 10 straight weeks you know I I think if you get to a point where the offensive line looks bad and you're two and nine I still think like okay maybe we have to throw Drake May in there because he has to get reps but and if that doesn't come like I I think it's just seeing the progression of the offensive line is like pretty much the biggest thing tying you know the biggest tie for Drake May for me right now and the big thing with the offensive line it has to be ready if Drake mayate if they're good week eight week nine and this is me going to your side tra right y if they're good week eight and week nine and Drake May's ready you start him because you have to know what you have with him and he needs real game reps you are going to play him as a rookie it has to happen but you need to keep him healthy you need to keep him upright and all the progress you're making with footwork and calling plays and processing out on the field that could all be set back to Ground Zero if the offensive line can't protect them they need to know what they have in Drake May because they're coming up on another draft where they could have a top three top five pick and need to know with what you're doing at quarterback and what you have with him but that's why the offensive Line's important in all this Kobe BR has to make it healthy you need Drake to make it out healthy as well and it drives me nuts J Mayo hey yeah at least you'll bring in a left tackle if you went out and just signed Jonah Williams for nothing you'd still have 40 million in cap space have an actual left tackle real quick Sean last thing we'll ask you on the defensive side secondary is what I'm always thinking Christian Gonzalez only played four games last year but I think we know what we get with him as a quarterback one which is a starter and a solid guy in a stud yep how did Alex Austin look opposite of them because that was in your studs and Duds article as well yeah um I think so I would say that it's more I mean with all this stuff right it's take it for what it's worth you know it's June and there's notepads and all that sort of stuff so I I want to say that ahead of time because that was one of Gerard's kind of clarification sort of thing he was asked about Alex Austin and the first thing he said is look this isn't physical we we're not wearing pads but you know he is making the most of the opportunity there's there's no doubt about it I mean um Marcus Jones and Jonathan Jones you know those guys are still Sidelines so he he's he's making the most of it I don't know how else to put it you know it's he's looked good he had a really nice pass breakup in uh seven on sevens yesterday against tawon Thorton it was a jacobe brette pass I'm almost positive um so he's made plays when they're presented and he he's looked you know he's looked good I I wouldn't I'm like hesitant to kind of pump him up too much right now because again it's just so early and the pad thing all that sort of stuff but I do think that there could be you know September com and he could be the second quarterback opposite of Christian Gonzalez and then you know maybe you have Jonathan Jones in the slot instead of the outside and then maybe the group is better in general um so I I would think that that's got to be you know I think the Patriots have to be looking at it like that like okay this kid is gonna step in he's going to be our quarterback too because otherwise you know do you do you target someone you know do you target a Stefan Gilmore or someone like that so I I think that they have to be pretty confident in him at this point and um yeah I mean we'll see how it goes but I would I would say he's definitely off to a good note all right Sean that's Shan Maguire nen.com thanks for coming on Foxboro Rush catch all his articles all over all over the nesson coverage into Tim and Keegan stifle calling the pat covering the Pats end to end and nine then yeah maybe you bring in Drake May I'm just saying 2 and N made my stomach hurt like it can't be that bad is it they're not going to be that bad are they George come on I don't have my schedule right up in front of me N I think by the time I have him playing right week 13 they're to Colts right before the buy yeah they're gonna have two or three wins by then so yeah two and nine is a real possibility God G of a schedule playing a lot of great quarterbacks your offensive line sucks and you're playing a lot of good defense he got to go to the west coast twice we cover that all on Fox bro Rush catch previous episodes here on Spotify but as always like subscribe and follow as well all right Trav so get to our favorite part of the show as well talking outside of New England Patriots ranking quarterbacks across the NFL all right when I was away you guys ranked the AFC South and I loved it CJ strad sitting at top there looking great how do you rank the quarterbacks in the NFC North because oh with two guys signing away well really Rogers went to the Packers to the Jets I mean but with Kirk Cousins leaving via free agency this is a young division of quarterbacks how do you rank them in this one my friend I'm going with the old dog I'm going Jared golf one this is a guy who has playoff obviously experienced he's been to a Super Bowl now you know people say well he it's not like he threw the Rams to that Super Bowl yeah but he didn't throw him out of it either I mean he didn't crash the car I think he deserves some respect for that we know that team was really mainly defense and the Excellence of John McVey when Jared G went and caught that L but look I had to throw that in on Fox worldo Rush right but look we saw him play at another extremely high level last season as well and Dam near near get back to the Super Bowl in that one no one can accuse him of well he's just guiding the team he's just managing the game hell no he's a playmaker for the Lions so I'm going to go Jer G the old dog here at the top Jordan love did enough on the back end of last season for me to feel confident that he's going to do it again I'm still pressing the breaks a little bit everyone's crowning this kid he's already been ordained this I'll give him in myself I know you're all about him I will get ordained in the state of Wisconsin and I get it and I will crown him King listen I get it I'm just not quick to do it just yet I want to see him do it a full season I didn't see him do it a full season last season I mean at at one point half no he didn't halfway through the season I was saying I think this kid's a bust and then last games of the season right exactly that's my point and then obviously he ended very strong where it was like okay now we're seeing the things why Green Bay bought brought him in and sat him and let him marinate behind Aaron Rogers as long as they did but again I want to see a full season of that until I see it I will not put the crown upon his head but I do like him then I'm going Caleb Williams who hold on hold on hold on yeah third hold on third let me get you let me cut you off here real quick yeah it has been said in the nesson offices by me calling himself out yes Caleb Williams will be a Hall of Famer future Hall of Famer multiple hold on multiple Super Bowls don't forget that and you have him behind Jared gof yeah I have him third I have him behind Jordan love you have him third in the division yeah you know why you want me to tell you go ahead haven't seen it with Dy eyes yeah that's fair saw them do it in high school got a chance to cover it saw them do DC don't know saw him do it at two Marquee Blue Chip programs y with the Boomer Sooners and USC fight on haven't seen it in the NFL so until then now I have JJ McCarthy right behind him for the same reason but I have Caleb over JJ because I can only go by what I've seen and in college Caleb Williams is a better quarterback than JJ McCarthy so benefit of the doubt I'm going to put him over JJ here in the NFL but both of these these guys clearly have room to grow on this list it wouldn't Shock Me Is You know maybe next season we're having this conversation on Foxboro rush and and Caleb could be number one on this list but for right now I can't do it until I see him ball out in the NFL and JJ McCarthy just he falls into four he's my number four yeah I I mean no knock on him but I I'm just going off what I saw in college as it pertains to those two and Caleb was a better player you know what's brilliant uh just that ranking and mine's close with yours in my three4 right but you would give JJ McCarthy and Caleb Williams they have the best receiving cores in this division now it's packed it's star studded I mean the Packers have all their number twos the Lions obviously have Jameson Williams let's see if he could be healthy playle season and Aman rosain Brown and leaport is another gem that offensive system is great but with Caleb Williams it's DJ Moore Keenan Allen Keenan Allen coming off his best career year and in approve it year he after this year he's a free agent again and Roman dun who they drafted but would have been wide receiver one in other drafts that didn't have Marvin Harrison Jr and then of course JJ McCarthy has the best wide receiver in all football and Jordan Addison who is a great number to pretty Dam good running back too very good running back and Aaron Jones weapon out of the back field all right my ranking I go number one is Jordan love man okay he is the best quarterback in this Division and to me it's without a doubt let's just talk about his last eight games of the regular season before he went to Dallas and threw all over them 10 games through the season he had about 16 touchdowns but was flirting with a lot of turnovers and interceptions whatever happened for those eight games and he flipped the switch and his experience in Matt lafl system this kid had 18 touchdowns to one interception with his deep receiving group with Christian Watson in and out of lineup I that guy will ever be healthy it didn't matter Jaden Reed The Versatile weapon that he is Davian Wicks the depth piece that he is Romeo dubs against his zone defense who is his safety blanket and of course with Luke Musgrave stepping up as well his weap Galore all over it and they still have a good run game even with Aaron Jones in Minnesota it's Josh Jacobs out of the backfield but most important about it all Jordan love can run one of the most complex systems in the NFL because remember when Matt laflor got to Green Bay it took Aaron Rogers a year to get it under his belt now this is Jordan love entering year five in the league drafted in 2020 didn't play 2021 thrown to a spot start because Rogers was out 22 23 didn't play in 22 finally 23 everything clears up and look what he did and get into the playoffs in a big stage beat the Cowboys and then run into the buz saww that is a 49ers Jordan love if I'm starting a team right now this is kind of how I look at my rankings y he is the best quarterback in the NFC North and now you can say Caleb Williams might have a higher ceiling because he's the next Patrick moms right yeah but to your point I've seen Jordan love do it and I think the confidence he has in it and he can make off platform throws he can roll out of the back field and make plays on the run and he can get it done with his legs as well his athleticism with his arm strength with making all the throws and his IQ and processing Jordan love to me is the best quarterback in the NFC North by far then number two I go Caleb Williams what I'm going pure ceiling on this one we've seen him do it at USC with an awful offensive line with a bad receiving group Brendan rice was a six seventh round prick pick uh his other receiver in wasn't that great either I mean he had nothing to work with no defense to get stops no offensive line to protect him and yeah he had a good play caller Lincoln Riley but that kid that Talent he has has to drop the bad habits but the receiving group he has the offensive line getting Linked UP yeah and who he has now with Shane walren I mean he's set up for success I have kale Williams too I have Jared go 3 because my God you're a hater bro he you're a hate Jared go he's good he just has two great quarterbacks in front of him but Jared gol's good a career year he still threw 12 interceptions I don't trust him to go out and win games for me we won because of him I'll win because of Jordan love and Caleb William but I'll win with Jared g go out there manage it we're going to run it let's get our defense back intact on this one we'll be okay and then lastly have JJ McCarthy because hasn't proved it to me but man with that receiving group he's going to put up Gody stats yeah he is let me ask you a question Jared G gets back to a Super Bowl win or Lo win or lose with Detroit I mean are you gonna put some respect on this guy what is this guy had to do does he have to win a ring is it the ring if he wins the Super Bowl this year will you put some respect you put a kid who hasn't done anything in the NFL yet over a guy who's been to the Super Bowl who's been to NFC Title Games who's had multiple playoff games and played well in all of them if Goff gets him there isn't a liability at all and I wasn't saying he was a liability in this postseason right this last run they had to the NFC championship game where they put up numbers they had a huge lead on San Fran but his head coach decided not to kick field goals if he gets him back there yeah and I see back-to-back seasons of him with this success with Ben Johnson we know what's going to happen put respect on his name Ben Johnson's going to leave get ahead coaching job we're going to see Jared gof without one of the best offensive coordinators heard I heard that well without McVey he's going to stink in Detroit except that he doesn't he was terrible his first two years in lions and then he came out proved it it runs the system and 29 years old again he got paid because the Lions would rather have somebody than nobody and hit reset and possibly fumble away the timeline they have with these young studs on both sides of the ball because they don't have a quarterback but yes stand your question if he get him to a Super Bowl win or lose and he is a guy that's out there as a leader and can get it done then yeah I'll put more respect on his name but also let's see what Caleb Williams does man if he's leading this offense they're firing on all cylinders and he sneaks the Bears into the playoffs this is a jam-packed defis division maybe Caleb Williams is still in front of him for me and maybe I'm betting more on ceiling I know what Jared gof is I know what Caleb Williams could be I'm ranking Caleb Williams number two because I know what he can be I hope he gets to that one day because it' be great for the n fell man yeah for sure Listen by the way I I asked that Super Bowl question cuz I do believe the lions are going to win the NFC I do they should have won it last season quite frankly but I'm I'm looking at the ners little bit you know longer in the tooth little older there I I just I I could see where maybe they start to regress in a sense and that Championship window that's been open for them and Lord knows they've had a ton of shots at at winning that Lombardi I'm I'm starting to think that window's closing a bit and I see it maybe opening a little bit more for Detroit that coach has to get out of his own way though as you mentioned but I I I could see the lions in the Super Bowl that's why I asked that I don't know if they're going to win it or not we never know till we get there but I feel like if he at least goes to two Super Bowls on two separate teams he deserves a little more respect from you GB you just picture you know lions and Super Bowl and you want to say yes yeah it's crazy to think though the Chiefs could three repeat because they have that one and the only in Patrick Mahomes but I'm with you on that and you point out the age of the roster it just came out average age and it's right now you know we're in the month of June 27.7 years old is the average age on the 49ers roster oldest roster in the NFL we'll see if Trent Williams can make it to another full season all right let's talk a little bit uh overpaid or underpaid because Justin Jefferson got four years a true fouryear deal 140 million extension 88 million guaranteed at signing 110 million guaranteed completely blew the wide receiver Market out of the waters we're gonna run through the guys that got paid and let's start with Aman Ross Brown four years 120 million 77 million guaranteed overpaid underpaid or you think boom right on the money I mean it listen all these guys are overpaid let's be clear like every last one of them you're about to name humil I like it but but we understand what it is especially in like Justin Jefferson's case he is the face of the franchise is not a quarterback and we'll see if JJ McCarthy can ball great but it's going to be a while since you know before he gets paid so Justin Jefferson as of now is the face of that franchise so of course he's going to get the big boy money that he did but St Brown uh look the Lions had to do that as well I I just think and we just talked about Jared G in a great career year that he had I mean this guy's a big part of it so what are you going to do let him walk and then what so I I think they were in a position where they had to really quite frankly bring the core back I think Brown got paid G got paid I mean they were shelling got paid that's right Penny Su so they're shelling out all this Dough because that core of players Dam near got them to the Super Bowl and they should have been in the Super Bowl so I think the lions were beholden to St Brown and and they had to give him that contract yeah I think it's on the money for what you pay him he's your wide receiver one he's great at getting open is he has explosive in dynamic as a Justin Jefferson or AJ Brown other guys we'll talk about yeah no one is but he's liable he gets open you know what you get with him he has the experience and he's put up great numbers I mean this is a top 10 guy top five guy arguably in the NFL and what they do with this signing I'm paying him he feels overpaid right now look at a year or two he's going to feel underpaid Y what about AJ Brown three years 96 mil 84 million guarantee okay he's a freak second time he got paid to he's a freak but I'm going to go overpaid here here's why I didn't like he he felt like he sabotaged that team a lot to me last season now I know they had some injury issues that secondary was a mess uh so they had some other issues going but just this guy pouting on the sidelines clearly him and Jaylen Herz not on the same page it looked like they were getting after each other a little bit AJ Brown took some shots at him in the media I didn't love that and he just Beed and moan and complained his way to this extension I don't love that I'm getting a lot of Diva wide receiver vibes from AJ Brown and that's not how his career started you know in Tennessee he was tougher than a $2 Stak he played hurt he gave his all to that franchise and the Titans felt like the bad guys yeah they felt like they why won't you pay this man then he goes to Philly he gets the bag he has success but then like I said it it kind of soured last year and now all of a sudden he gets this extension translation he complain his way to get more money and he got it so now let's see what happens I don't know if this guy can ever be happy I'm I'm looking at him with the side eye he's a great player I'm still looking at him with the side eye a little bit I just see he's coming off his two best career years 88 catches two seasons ago 106 is pass season 1,400 yards yeah can he be consistent but also he put up those numbers 106 catches over 1400 receiving yards when the Eagles offense was never right I think he's paid as he should because he's three at the position when he's playing his best when he's getting the ball in the offense is humming I think he's perfectly paid lastly Nico Collins we'll keep this one quick three years 52 million guaranteed 72.7 is up to what he can earn Hey listen same thing I say with the Lions I think the Texans were in the same position here where they had to pay him he he's paid just right because they want to keep that core together they want to keep him those young receivers CJ strout still on rookie deal money right you bring in a Stefon dig so I think this was more about just keeping the core together I think Nico is paid just right to make that happen I'm going to go overpaid on this one because he only did it one year and I get it he finally had CJ strad yeah it's Davis Mills his first two years you get CJ in team up with tank Dell you get Stefan Diggs you're paying for him and this is wide receiver 2 money 52 million guaranteed which as nut as it sounds still think he's overpaid I got to see it again I want to see it again but this is Nick cerio and the Texans being smart and what I say and what you're getting with Alan Ross Browns what they're doing Nico Collins ahead of the market because other guys out there like a t Higgins will get paid and this 52 million guaranteed by next season will be 55 60 million guaranteed so I give casario credit I think he's overpaid because I need to see him more than that but you said it and how the Texans built out you know what I'll get i'll get back is how my scattered brain works how loud I got of the Patriots not even being able to figure out their offensive line yeah look at what the Texans are doing with CJ strad man yeah paid ni Collins tank Dell CJ's handpicked receiver cool you got a few years away then you went out and got Stefan digs you have a defense around you invest in the defense in the draft you're keeping Bobby slowick there the Texans are doing everything perfect for their young Quint baby that's all you got to do Patriots the blueprint is there for you just follow it just draft a left tackle or sign one Jonah Williams was staring you in the face in the face and what did you do just let him walk on away Trav it was great being back with
