reversals by Harris over the the years specifically previous comments in 2019 supporting decriminalizing illegal border crossings and banning fracking Harris explained she changed her position on fracking back in 2020 because it's important to build consensus and solve problems let's be clear my values have not changed what we've already done creating over 300,000 new clean energy jobs that tells me from my experience as Vice President we can do it without Banning fracking the Trump campaign has asked why Harris hasn't done some of the things she wants to do as president while she's been vice president Harris defended bomic well first of all we had to recover as an economy and we have done that I'm very proud of the work that we have done that has brought inflation down to less than 3% the work that we have done to cap the cost of insulin at $35 a month for seniors Donald Trump said he was going to do a number of things including allowing Medicare to negotiate drug prices never meteorologist LaTroy Thorton at the national map as a strong cold front pushes rather slowly toward the Eastern Seaboard over the next couple of days the risk for severe weather will follow along just ahead of the front for today this means that a Zone from lower Michigan to Central Indiana and parts of Illinois is in line for storms that can produce damaging winds and some hail along with drenching downpours this afternoon and into the night tomorrow expect the severe risks to track Eastward from Northeastern Kentucky to Western Maryland and the Western half or so of New York State the very same cold front should spark some coverage of mostly non- severe thunderstorms today from much of Northern Texas into Missouri as well as Eastern portions of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and Wisconsin with a pleasant and much more comfortable day expected behind the front from the dtas through Minnesota and Western Iowa a hot and humid day instead brings thunderstorms to parts of the South with a very moist air mass able to ring out some torrential downpours from Southeast Texas to Southern parts of Mississippi however there can be some thunderstorms through interior sections of Alabama and Georgia as well along with the Florida Peninsula but nothing too unusual for late August the West looks mainly dry with the beginning of another heat wave for the interior Northwest and some Monsoon thunder showers mainly focused over New Mexico but the Mid-Atlantic will be active once again with showers from Southern New York to Delaware and thunder more likely Southward from there into North Carolina much of the New England and the interior Northeast should be dry today in Baltimore expect a Cloudy and cooler day today with a shower around and a high of just 77 for Denver look for Sunshine and a nice end to the work week with a high getting up to 88 that's the nation's weather I'm ACU weather . meteorologist lroy Thornton remember to follow us wherever you get your podcasts better shape than anyone could have imagined when the month began in the first three trading days of August the S&P 500 fell about 6% the NASDAQ about 8% Flash Forward to today the last day of the month the Dow is at a record high the S&P is higher for August and the NASDAQ is just below break even and the market didn't slump even though chipmaker envidia shares fell after it did not beat consensus earnings estimates quite as much as it had in the past Craig Johnson Chief Market technician for Piper Sandler is pleased that in investors are now looking Beyond Nvidia and the other so-called Magnificent Seven stocks they're not making the same new highs like we've seen before you can actually find some better-looking stocks in this midcap world uh that look a lot more constructive and I think that sort of the change is happening this is a market that's broadening out it doesn't have to be led by just the mag seven yesterday's relatively steady stock session came after two pieces of data showed the economy on solid footing initial jobless claims fell while second quarter economic growth was revised higher to a 3% Ann ual rate Laura R chief us Economist at FS is looking solid it's weathered a global slowdown beyond the market there's a strong economy that's very resilient today the focus will be on economic numbers that could strengthen the idea of the economic soft Landing meaning a slow down without a recession we'll be getting fresh numbers on personal income and spending as well as the personal consumption expenditures or pce index the fed's preferred measure of inflation earnings reports this week Peter they've been all over the road for major retailers what's the explanation depends on what those particular retailers are selling and what customers they're targeting that can be the case but this week we've seen at least one instance that contradicts that narrative Dollar General was by far Thursday's worst S&P 500 performer losing 32% after we week earnings and a cut in its yearly Outlook the discount retailer said financially constrained consumers are focusing on Essentials rather than higher margin products but Walmart reported upbeat earnings earlier this month and its stock is up 45% this year analysts say Walmart is simply executing better as well as having the advantage of a significant online presence but it is targeting a similar customer with the same constraints having said all that it does indeed help if you're selling what people want or need to buy whereas Dollar General was Thursday's worst S&P performer the biggest gainer was Electronics retailer Best Buy mhm cnbc's Peter Shack now when we return on America in the morning plane hit by car on the highway after these messages welcome back the all important Battleground States correspondent Clayton Neville reports RFK Jr who ran for president as an independent through his support behind Republican nominee and former president Donald Trump late last week and now to throw my support to president Trump the the causes were free speech a war in Ukraine and the war on our children the plan was to keep Kennedy's name on the ballot in states where doing that wouldn't sway the election one way or another but in Battleground States Kennedy said he would take his name off the ballot to let Trump get more votes in those States easier said than done though apparently Kennedy can't remove his name from the ballot in Michigan where he was nominated by the natural law party and a Wisconsin election official say law state anyone who applies and qualifies for the ballot will appear on it unless they die Trump's running mate JD Vance ripped the state I think it's ridiculous that RFK has endorsed Donald Trump he has petitioned to be taken off the Wisconsin ballot but a bunch of bureaucrats are going to keep his name on the ballot because they think it'll hurt Donald Trump I think we're going to win Wisconsin anyway and we're going to fight for every single vote that's our plan RFK Jr will stay on the ballot in North Carolina after the state's Board of Elections voted yesterday to reject the request to remove by the that terrorist targeted attack at a Taylor Swift concert after the these [Music] messages you're with America in the morning us intelligence is sharing more details about this month's foiled terrorist plot to attack a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna Austria correspondent Donna wer reports a warning from the CIA helped thwart an ISIS attack that was intended to kill thousands of concert goers while addressing this week's annual intelligence and National Security Summit in Maryland CIA deputy director David Cohen said the suspects who were planning to attack Taylor Swift's arys tour in Vienna earlier this month wanted to kill tens of thousands of fans the CIA discovered intelligence and disrupted the plot leading to arrests by law enforcement in Austria Cohen said the suspects were quite advanced in their plot but after intelligence about what he calls this Isis connected group The austrians were able to make those arrests Austrian officials say the main suspect a 19-year-old man was inspired by Islamic State group and that he planned to attack outside the concert venue where more than 30,000 Taylor Swift fans were expected to gather his attorney says the allegations are overacting at its best I'm Donna water there's plenty to choose from this Labor Day weekend at your nearby theater including one debut reaching for the Stars Kevin Carr has a sneak peek at slingshot if you think your job can make you feel isolated there's a movie that might give you a new perspective so I don't know if you heard but I'll be leaving town soon billion and a half miles no big deal slingshot is a science fiction Thriller that examines the potential challenges of space travel the story follows a trio of astronauts on a mission to Saturn's moon of Titan Titan it's the most earthlike World we can reach but to get there we'll need Jupiter's gravity for a speed boost however as they approach a critical moment where they have to slingshot around Jupiter things begin to break down the harsh dangers of space and the influence of drugs used in suspended animation start to affect their psychological and emotional stability the drugs used to induce hibernation can produce side effects including confusion and disorientation I'm a sucker for movies about a handful of people trying to survive in space and a strong but limited cast featuring Casey Affleck and Lawrence Fishburn helps carry the film Houston we have a situation the impact represents no real danger what if the whole system is compromised the paranoia and Trauma of the characters is where the meat of the story is the movie does milk the tension a little too much drawing out the running time but it kept me guessing and for an ambitious psychological Thriller in the vast emptiness of space it made its point nation is playing a cool trick on you how do you know this slingshock gets three gas giants out of five I'm Kevin Carr and that's the way I see it that's our show for today have a safe and happy Labor Day weekend America in the morning for Friday August 30th 2024 is produced by Jeff McKay senior producer Kevin Delaney I'm John trout this is Westwood One
