Live: Coach Jeff Brohm shares comments following Louisville's win against Jacksonville State

you know whenever somebodys in the game it's like reloading you know they have the same capability so full confidence in job I think you targeted 11 different receivers 10 guys made catches today including the guys out of the back just talk about how dangerous this wide receiving core is I think goes to show what we've been talking about the whole time we have a bunch of guys make plays and I TR every single one of them obviously get a really good job catch the ball I could had better ball a lot of my throws you guys will go into a buy before having Georgia take on the other side how much do you guys take from these two games and kind of evaluate especially you know having a little bit of time before the ACC opener yeah I think you know I think we find out you know the things that we're good at and what we need to work on um you know you're facing a great opponent every single week and it's only going to get tougher and it's going to be a challenge um so I think it was we did a really good job of starting fast and taking some punches you know we had some mistakes and we had some things that we want to clean up a lot and I think these two weeks we've learned a lot so you know going into the rest of the season we got to take advantage of every moment every rep yeah I mean I wouldn't put an exact number on it but I feel like you know we're going to we're going to attack defense that we see every single week and whatever that may be we have a lot of plays a short answer that we can get to and I think that's one of our strengths is that coach BR is willing to call a lot of play and we have to know a lot of them and you know that's partly partly on my job as well and you know I feel really confident what we can do and spread the ball around like we were talking about earlier um so I think just the the ability that we have you on offense and the talent and the play the play making ability the play calling youever there just two games in the book for you now what have you learned maybe about yourself obviously being in this game for a long time you learn something still every day so what have you learned about yourself through these first couple games and what do you feel you personally can still do to grow moving forward especially with this five week yeah I I feel like um whenever we have good good things that happen you just keep your foot on the gas and still go into every single play and rip the ball you I feel like we we had some close calls on some of those shot plays with some P but really kind of take advantage of those can but then just do my job and spread out to the guys I think what I've learned so far is you know good things can happen when you're not trying to push you know you don't you know 90% you're try to be a hero make every single play that's usually when bad things happen definitely learned a lot try to continue to get better to kind of going off that you hit some big plays today but it felt like you had to be a little more methodical to to get down the field in this game as opposed to Austin what are Coach Jeff or coach Brian tell you about staying patient taking your shots when you get them but but ultimately not forcing sure yeah I mean they do a really good job on defense at Jackson State changed different looks you know they play 35 structure they're going to get double CL cover One Zero Combo and sometimes keep back to four or so they're going to change up and I think you know we have those light boxes or we had Advantage runs we got to take them and you know some rpos may not be there and then when we have some shots they're not there we got to hit the check they do a really good job of of you know getting getting us in good plays and it's my job to to take advantage of them and if it's not there we get a different look and take a positive play I think my goal is you know every single play is don't have a negative play even if there is going to be one eliminate turnover so got to do a better job of of you know increasing that side of the ball as far as not not giving them the ball you we didn't have any turnovers necessarily but we just got to keep you going forward El thanks yes the SM okay uh proud of our football team today I thought they played hard for four quarters uh we knew we'd be tested better in this game uh this team just does a lot of different things uh have some has some nuances on offense you got to prepare for it you got to be good at it and they they caught us on our heels a few times in the first half and and got some points offense was was fairly efficient which was good because we got a lead and of course in the second half I think we made we made adjustments we came out we played efficient football we didn't give up any points on defense played much better of course when we efficient on offense and and increasing the lead and makes them do some things they don't want to do so all those things tied into it but I do think we finished the game and played hard and came out with a with a a good victory have your running backs scored most had most of the touchdowns today given how young they are how much confidence do kind of give them especially going into ACC play well we like our core of running backs and we have really from day one and uh they all have different elements uh that make them very useful beneficial to the team they're great teammates they support each other um you know you never know who you're going to need and uh you know Don got a little bit injured today he came out with a high ankle the others were able to step in we've they've already played they already have that experience so it just makes your team better when you can utilize more guys keep them fresh not get guys beat up uh and I think their offensive Line's been really really good to this point as well in the Run game and passing game opening up hes and providing protection Jeff how would you evaluate Tyler kind of staying patient today working through his progression and not really forcing much this game well he's done a really good job and uh you know he got here um he's with us all spring summer and fall and really he's he's been like this the whole time so I really can't say we coached him that well he came in in my opinion uh pretty dag on good now we' got him up to speed on our offense and some things we do uh and got him used to our personnel and how we call plays but uh you know he's got a good arm he's a good athlete he's played a lot of football he's got experience uh he gets it uh he's been very back in his passes which is very important uh nothing rattles him um so the composure factor is tremendous so just proud of of his performance and he hung in there and did a great job for us Jeff you guys struggled defensively in the first half at times especially in the secondary was it more self-inflicted or was it more of what Jacksonville State was doing well it was a combination of both I think uh you know we got beat on a little perimeter pump screen where our sa just got to hang there and not not bite the bait that was unfortunate um you know they moved the pocket and and hit some things up the seam on us where we got out of whack and and kind of drifted a little bit too far and uh you know some of those plays a little Orthodox but we we prepared for them uh and then we got caught in in a zero Blitz where they you know creases for a run untouched in the end zone and of course quarterback was able to scramble a lot in the first half up the middle so whether it's the dline or whether it's the linebackers kind of hanging in there whether it's the safeties coming downhill you know those things uh we got better in the second half but they did creas us for a few the first half and but I but I like the way we responded and played the second time Jeff you you're going to a by we and obviously a very early one is it beneficial though to have this bye now and what are you going to use this time to do in terms of preparation and ultimately preparing for ACC play in this GBL coming up well I I would prefer Zero by weeks if you ask me I like to play and and play every week and get in a routine and get in a pattern and get in a flow but uh this this year is two B weeks for we'll use it the proper way and I think it's uh we want to get guys fresh even though we just had two games we want everybody to get healthy get fresh we've had some guys nicked up and banged up a little bit this game we had a few come out already that are are injured that we've got to get them as healthy as we can we want to get uh the young guys some work this week as well and get a little head start on on Georgia Tech and make sure we're we're prepared for that and then um you know this week will be live for them and then we'll kind of start back up on Sunday with a bonus practice uh preparing for Georgia Tech and then kind of have a normal week next next week but uh you know we'll use it the right way and uh we'll get these guys fresh je with you mentioned Tyler's kind of command control of the offense and that he got it pretty quickly when he got here how important are these first two games in terms of having that line Comas well he's intelligent and uh you know even though our terminology is different than what he's used to some of these plays are kind of the same with a couple little nuances here and he's just learned it quickly he understands it you know he studies it uh he knows that's what he's here to do I came here with a purpose which is what we love U and he's a really good player so we got to you know use these weapons like we can we got to try to make him play as great as he possibly can every week that's our goal to make him stand out and be efficient and throw for yards and and produce points uh and we think he can do it and I think if we just continue to to block well and run the and give them some balance and our receivers make big plays up the field uh then good things will happen but we'll be tested as we get going coming up with these next games and we'll see exactly where we're at but I do like the start we have well I think in order to be a great football team you've got to be able to throw and run the ball and you can't be onedimensional and and if you are then you're just got the best players in the world and a great defense so for us um each element helps the other uh the fact that we can run the football will help our passing game the fact that we can throw the ball vertically will help our running game and I think you just play both of them off each other uh you figure out what the defense is doing and kind of you know take what they give you to a certain extent but if you're good at both and they have to make make a decision on what to do and uh that's what we want to do we want to be efficient in both we want to know exactly what we want to do in certain situations but you have to be able to stretch the field and get them off of you to open up things in the running game and to open up uh you know the screen game and some some uh shorter throws as well so I just think all those things matter we think we have a pretty good feel of it as we get playing some really good defenses you'll just have to find a way to to move the points excuse me move the ball and get points anyway but I think we have a good plan last uh coach it seemed like every time you ran the ball you were getting four five six yards at least before contact uh just kind of talk about the work that the offensive line did today and just how that kind of takes pressure off of the running game well like I said I think our offensive Line's been really efficient for two games really proud of them I think we've had some depth there as well that we've built uh but our starters have done a great job and they understand the package they don't get a lot of credit you know the running backs quarterbacks receivers are which I understand that uh but they've opened up host and then when we've needed to prot to throw the ball vertically we've done a good job of doing that we gave up zero sacks today uh even though they sque they squeeze in there a few times but our quarterback did good job of getting the ball out but uh you know it's a it's a job that uh you got to work really hard at and you got to be physical and you got to be tough and you got to know that you're not going to get a whole lot of credit but you're probably going to get blam when things don't go well and these guys have really stepped up to the challenge and done a good job can can you realistically keep playing four or five running backs at a time or do you think at some point it'll have to to get paired down some well I know um when we had our best team here when I was an assistant under coach patrino we had five NFL running backs on the team at one time and U it can help you uh and it can keep keep guys fresh and when certain guys get injured and other guys have already played you're you're going to be better so the one year we unfortunately lost Michael Bush we had other guys that that could play and even though that was a devastating injury he's a fantastic player we had other guys that could play this year this game Don went down with the high ankle spring uh had other guys played so um you know sometimes it can be too many but at the same time you know what running backs you got to keep them fresh there's only so many carries you can make we think we got a de a decent feel of what these guys are good at what runs screen game perimeter game all those things but they've been efficient they've taken care of the ball they've blocked fairly well uh they've broken tackles we got two two true freshmen that have shown really good signs of speed and burst uh with a couple veterans I just think it's a good mixture they all support each other uh we got a bunch of tight end too uh and we have some receivers so I just think that uh you get them all ready you never know when you're going to need them but uh you'll become a better football team the more you have fine can you want the running backs handled most of the scoring today I mean gu just how much confidence is a game like this and last week give you guys you know going to the week and then heading into ACC play in two weeks uh Kian just kind of talk about it seems like the running back room is having a great time through the first couple games everybody's getting touches everybody's getting in the end zone what's it like to be with a group of that many running backs that are able to make plays know all of come owny we got a whole lot of R keep us barklay talked about how you know the beginning season is a question question mark on the board do you feel like you guys have even though it's only two Gam a little bit of a question mark uh Chris Barkley talked about how at the end of season he put a question mark on the board for you guys to say like you know what would be your identity do you feel like you've erased a little bit of that question mark just a little bit uh Chris if you could just talk about your touchdown catch you beat two Defenders over the top it seemed like you really wanted that when you made the play on it can you just talk about that play and how that kind of came about on that touch hey Chris right up here coaches mentioned you had a great spring a great fall just to get a touchdown like how gratifying is it to reward work paying off I put all the work in the offse coming here more tou so it feel in theadi know qu jar da you know they got extra running back can get extra so you know just got have uh Jared if you could just uh kind of talk about the defensive line has done a great job of stopping the run up front um even today though they had some success passing the ball every time they ran the ball seemed like somebody was right there just talk about you guys and how you work to make sure they can't get going on the Run game defending the Run that's like our number one responsibility that's what we come out every day that's what we you guys had a pretty strong first quarter and then the second quarter as mentioned they were able to move the ball a little bit more was there a message to you guys at half down about okay we need to do this to do that kind of Shore that up in the second half yeah there was coach English came in and know we always make adjustments the past two years you guys have started AC and now You' had two really three weeks with the buy to kind of get ready how nice is that and what do you want to work on um during the buy to get ready for teches conference having that game game isti sometimes you straight you having these first two games you know seeing really what we got we you know justes good
