Rams News: Ernest Jones Requests a Trade? Alaric Jackson Suspended? Who's on the 53-man Roster?

what's up everybody welcome back to another episode of rams Brothers it's just your host Dean today I'm jumping in for a quick update on the Ernest Jones potential trade all of the news that broke today in relation to Ernest Jones the Aller Jackson suspension he's going to be suspended for the first two games of the regular season some takeaways from yesterday's preseason finale against the Texans and injury updates that have occurred over the past couple of weeks uh Nick will be back for our next episode on Tuesday where we talk through the final roster the final 53 man roster all of the roster cuts that are going to occur over the next couple of days once everything is finalized but before we jump into this episode I want to make sure that I'm mentioning that this episode is in between we have U obviously the regular season coming up in the next couple of weeks we have the opener against the Lions on Sunday Night Football so we will be talking about the final 53 man roster and any kind of news that breaks over the next couple of weeks in anticipation of Sunday night football against the Lions so I wanted to kick it off with Ernest Jones Ernest Jones was granted permission to seek a trade uh so I think a lot of Rams Fans were surprised by this after the league meetings in March and this is breaking from Sarah barshop Le said that the Rams would not be signing Ernest Jones to an extension before the season Ernest Jones has one year left on his rookie deal he's only 24 years old he is the team captain he is the Green Dot wearer and he's coming off of the best season that he's had in his in his career with the Rams where he had 145 tackles and 4.5 sacks last year he missed one single game last year due to injury and still surpassed James lontis for the most tackles in a single season James lontis had 142 I think back in 2005 or 2006 I don't think there are many Rams Fans who want to see Ernest Jones go but I think that there are plenty who trust the vision of the front office if he were to get traded so in terms of savings and everybody's always curious about how does it impact the salary cap the Rams would save roughly $3 million this upcoming season in cap space by moving on from Ernest Jones it would only be a $210,000 dead cap hit so you know nothing too dramatic in in terms of the implications and the dead cap hit that they would take on from moving on from Ernest Jones $3 million in savings could be pretty significant but in terms of an inside linebacker like you're looking at things now like trade comp like what is what happens with trade comp like many will be looking for a third round pick I'm seeing it a lot on X in terms of what the Rams are already going to be looking for in return for Earnest drones he was a third round pick back in 2020 which is why I think that's that number that that round pick is is coming up but I think it just seems unrealistic in terms of he needs a new deal a guy like Matthew judon for example um was just moved for a third round pick and the league values Edge rushers so much more than they value inside linebackers so I think a realistic trade comp would probably be somewhere around A fifth or sixth rounder or maybe a couple picks in sixth and seventh rounds to be able to get the job done I would think in terms of potential teams that you can kind of keep your eyes on or over the next couple of weeks if a trade were to happen are the Falcons obviously there's a connection with Raheem Morris the Eagles Eagles fans are already talking about how Howie needs to get the trade done um they have some some linebacker deficiencies especially inside it's been happening over the past couple of years uh similar situation to what the Rams are in I would say the Chargers the Chargers specifically because Ernest Jones said he wants to be able to settle down in Los Angeles and start a family at some point so you know walk across the street you're still in the same facilities you know everything would be okay in terms of him being able to start his family and the Rams doing the best to not have to put him back in the same conference but you're getting him out of the conference at the same time and then also the Titans I think there's a bunch of Titans fans on X who are talking about potentially getting this deal done um so I could see those four teams as the main four um contenders in terms of who's going to potentially trade for Ernest Jones uh Jake hmel was wearing the green dot all throughout the preseason he's the highest graded defender on the rams's roster through the preseason at 90.7 Omar Spates is right behind him Spates is at a 90.6 he's tied for first and tackles causing unsuccessful plays and he's tied for second with tackles for a loss with three so far this preseason so without Ernest Jones I'd expect hmel to get the starting job because I mean with reader as depth behind him potentially reader obviously knows the system he was there for the Super Bowl he's a Super Bowl champion somehow um but Troy reer in in terms of depth behind Jak KMEL I think could be a realistic option and then also Rose boom alongside of him with Spates in rotation with Christian roseboom I think the the injury news is really interesting when it comes to Ernest Jones like he had a knee injury in the middle of last season that lingered all the way through to August 15th when McBay said that they got good news on his knee um and I I think that you know McVey saying that everything should be good going forward isn't always solid feedback right things are always fluid things are always changing this was just nine days ago I think a couple of other things that you guys should take into consideration when just looking at this Ernest Jones news is there's a lot of cuts coming so obviously the Rams could prioritize a couple of players that are surprise cuts across the league and also the Rams just don't prioritize inside linebackers like it's it's really unfortunate but we've seen very few who've gotten long-term deals in the past 25 years or so it goes all the way back to London Fletcher Alec ogl Tre Cory Bobby Wagner and now Ernest Jones is is fitting in this category so it's definitely upsetting everybody wants to see Ernest Jones on this team um we had originally asked Jordan when she was on the Pod back in April about Ernest Jones's contract and it just didn't really go anywhere in terms of the conversation um so I don't expect anything to happen in terms of contract news in the next couple of weeks um but I there is a situation where he could still be on the roster and he still could be there for opening day and that would only leave Aller Jackson as the only starter who likely will not be able to play on Sunday night football against the Lions so as we're talking about Aller Jackson he was suspended for violating the League's personal conduct policy so two game suspension details are all still be still to be determined um but this new NFL personal conduct policy it it states that the NFL's personal conduct policy applies to players Public Image and personal life and prohibits conduct that could endanger danger players damage the League's reputation or also bring discredit to the sport which it's kind of scary um so I'm not sure exactly what's going to happen with Aller obviously he's going to be able to he's going to miss the first two games and then he's going to be then reinstated following the week two game against the Arizona Cardinals but I mean Aller I think he played in 15 games last year uh everybody likes him in terms of a left tackle obviously Rams Fans are always looking to upgrade and he's an undrafted player who's not making a ton of money he was only tendered for one year as of the offseason this year but Joe Noom is supposed to be our Jamar Crawford he's supposed to be our Lou Williams he's supposed to be Manu job right like this is the eighth highest cap hit on the roster and he was paid to be the left tackle of the future uh I think he absolutely needs to be able to step up for this team and I think you're you're potentially going to see it in week one of the regular season um if you're not going to see somebody like Warren McLendon who's played a lot of really valuable snaps at right tackle but I think he's better suited as depth for Rob havenstein if Rob havenstein for whatever reason can't go in week one but it was reported by Jordan that both Joe Noom and Warren McLendon were getting some reps this offseason in practice um at left tackle so it's definitely a possibility and I'm remembering back to the Bengals game last year where Rams Fans were calling for Zach Thomas's head Zack Thomas ended up starting starting at left tackle against the Bengals and by halftime all Rams Fans were calling for Joe noo to to find his way back at left tackle he wasn't inactive which I thought was was pretty staggering right it's like you would assume that the guy was inactive if he wasn't starting a left tackle because he is the a highest cap hit on the roster but I it was McVey and staff's preference to start Zack Thomas so that's what we're dealing with as of right now with the Aller Jackson news I would expect for Aller to be able to come back in week three and play at a really high level I think a lot of Rams Fans do like aler Jackson I think he has performed really well for an undrafted player um and you know you could look in the offseason to upgrade somebody like this at left tackle it could be a priority in the 20125 draft but as of right now all the conversations have been focused around keeping Matthew Stafford H healthy improving the Run game and without the starting five offensive line I think all of this is very much in Jeopardy so not a ton of concern quite yet but I guess a little bit kind of as we're we're moving through the next couple of weeks of the offseason getting ready for the Lions so the 53 man roster um is going to be finalized by Tuesday at 4 pm Eastern so 1 pm Pacific time so I think a lot of the the news coming out of the preseason finale is like who's going to stay who's going to go you're probably going to see a couple of these these news pieces of news break over the next couple of weeks in terms of who's cut we already got some news that Omar Spates is going to be on the active roster so Spates obviously had an incredible preseason I think a lot of the Rams Fans are really excited about the potential upside of Omar Spates um but in terms of like what we're going to be looking at from the cut down from 90 to 53 players Spates is obviously a lock there's obviously Xavier Smith which is another guy that's on the bubble you know you look at guys like Cody Duran you look at guys like Carlos Watkins you look at guys like Zack van valkenberg even here Thomas like there's going to be some really difficult decisions especially on the defensive side of the ball and you also look at running back obviously they they sign somebody uh from the Seahawks uh you know so you have a six running back Boston Scott and Zack Evans Zack Evans had two touchdowns yesterday so I think the decision of running back is going to be difficult receiver you might see Tyler Davis um rather Tyler Johnson you might see Xavier Smith still on the roster um so I think it's going to be a little bit difficult in terms of how they decide to cut everything down plus there's been some drama with 2 two Atwell and MC Bay's recent comments so I think receiver is going to be interesting running back is going to be interesting obviously STS and Bennett is going to be taking all of the snaps of qb2 when Jimmy Garoppolo is serving his two game suspension so those are all things to kind of continue to monitor the defensive line the secondary and now even inside linebacker there's some drama um and in terms of the injury news so we know Matthew Stafford's fine we know Matthew Stafford is is perfectly fine Jonah Jackson is going to be back at practice this upcoming week so great news there Darius Williams is also returning to practice this upcoming week they're both going to be participating in individual drills and also team drills puka has that bartis in his knee so that was a non- contct like you can't there's obviously no structural damage but you can't get him back on the field participating in joint practices because any kind of contact any kind of landing on that btis is going to swell up the entire knee so you don't want anything like that to happen over the next couple of weeks so you want to be really kind of careful with how you're going to monitor his progressions with his injury over the next couple of weeks Rob havenstein and Aller Jackson were the others havenstein seems like he's going to be back in practice as of next week but now with all's two we suspension he's obviously not going to be on the field but Rob havenstein we do expect to return to practice and again as I mentioned with Ernest Jones not necessarily time to panic yet obviously the news broke from uh from Ernest Jones's agent so you know I think it's just kind of something to keep an eye on but I think there is a lot of trust in the front office I think there's a lot of trust in the coaching staff they do usually make the right decisions on these kind of things if the knee injury is lingering if they feel like they can get some trade compensation back and if they feel like it'll open up enough cap space to be able to sign another player potentially I do think it makes sense but it gets down to the final point which is the only starter that is going to be missing time definitively for the first couple of weeks weeks of the regular season is going to be Allard Jackson and it's just based on that two- game suspension Ernest Jones could be there they could work out you know another one-year extension they could work out something with Ernest Jones's Camp to keep him in the facility for the remainder of this year because they prioritized team captains because they prioritize players and want them to be able to support whatever it is they have Ono going personally in terms of wanting to start a family so that's what we got for you guys as of today we'll talk to you guys again on Tuesday when all of their roster cuts are officially
