Pablo and happy to do it with you yeah yeah yeah um I just want is Sola to know that this hasn't been as fun as it looks actually you think you want to do this and you really don't it's August it's hot you don't get respect but welcome to PTI nonetheless Mike and Tony wanted one more night in the clubs they always do I am joined by my friend nemesis from NFL live as a consequence me [Applause] Mina I want to start today with your favorite thing in the world which is football specifically with our expectations for Bryce young the Panthers quarterback is going to see his first preseason action tomorrow against the bills and of course this is the number one overall pick who struggled through his rookie season while the number two pick CJ strad who we talked about yesterday also he excelled for the Texans obviously so now young has a new head coach he's got a slew of new teammates and so how should he be feeling his prospects in year two better it's hard to feel worse Pablo I mean Bryce Young's rookie season was basically a case study in how to not set up a rookie quarterback for Success which isn't to say he was entirely blameless he didn't play well but he also played behind a bottom five offensive line throwing to a group of skill players comfortably you would rank in the bottom three I mean I I don't like to paint with too broad of a brush here but when your number one receiver is a peer of you and mine Adam feland in this case that's generally not a good thing in football now the Panthers have as you alluded to taken steps to rectify this they did invest in the offensive line particularly at the guard position spent a ton of money there they traded for xav par me they traded for Deontay Johnson who's a great separator from the Steelers drafted Xavier Legette I think all of that will help I think Bryce young will play better I don't know if he will flourish and if they'll win a lot of games but this season isn't about winning games it's about evaluating and developing your Young quarterback yeah it's just hard not to think about the draft with him and you want to be moved past this point Mina because his physical comp pre-draft was one of my peers uh which is to say you you stood next to him in a photo and people were like this isn't good the relative uh Equanimity although you claimed to be wearing heels which you know truthers may disagree uh just not a great start and then the headline on this season his rookie season was historically bad and I think it's unfair for me to come on this show and talk to you and just say the name CJ strout over and over again but I'm going to do it CJ strout had a historically unparalleled rookie season he went number two Bryce young went number one and so when it comes to what he is facing now I think all of the help you outlined is absolutely going to be incredibly useful to him but also I mentioned that he has a new coach he also has a new GM and you know that if you're a quarterback taking even number one overall when you're not the guy for the guys is in charge you got to be worried in a new way yeah especially as we've seen more teams willing to move on more quickly from their first picks Steeler the Steelers for example who we're going to talk about later um you talked about the new coach and that is another one another thing I want to hit on with the Panthers CJ strad was so much better in so many ways but he also benefited from better play calling and I am interested in seeing what Dave Canales the new head coach of the Carolina Panthers does with Bryce young because he did a fantastic job with Gino Smith in Seattle Baker Mayfield in Tampa Bay it's a big part of why he was hired for this job Pablo on to another quarterback Anthony Richardson his rookie season was ended by injury after his fourth game last year so there's still mystery as to what the Colts have heading into his second season in last night's preseason finale against the Bengals Richardson threw a touchdown pass for his team on his first drive and a touchdown pass for The Other Guys on his second Pablo how should the Colts be feeling about Anthony Richardson so I think this is very different from Bryce young and how the Panthers are feeling about him right Richard got hurt last season and what we're seeing from him in terms of questions about okay how is his arm how is he as a passer these were built into the premise of him because Anthony Richardson of course is arguably the greatest physical athletic specimen at quarterback in the history of the league and so as much as you watch him in these scrimmages and these preseason uh snaps and you say okay not great that he's overthrowing a guy who is uncovered not great that he is being uh strip sacked after holding the ball for too long this is all kind of the roulette wheel that you chose to spin because if it lands in the right way you get to wave all that aside and say again we're playing the game of comps we got our Josh Allen and the upside the upside of that is actually just still very enticing to me specifically it's enticing and it's fascinating I would argue that Anthony Richardson is one of the pivotal players in the NFL this season Pablo because this Indianapolis Colts Team without him with some pretty mid quarterback play last year from gter mchu was still knocking on the door of the playoffs if Richardson comes even close to the ceiling that the Colts envisioned and when they drafted him fifth overall they are an incredibly relevant team now I am not going to make a judgment on whether or not he's going to hit that ceiling after four drives in the preseason but they were interesting and particularly the first drive I thought he played really well he was accurate the ball was coming out fast it was everything you wanted to see then on subsequent Drive some of the issues with inaccuracy that you saw in his college career also some miscommunications with his receivers which is what led to the pick six I don't know which of those Anthony Richardsons we're going to see more of during the regular season but if we see more of the good Anthony Richardson it's going to be very exciting to watch yeah and I just don't I don't want to be his defense attorney here Anthony Richardson's but we talked about Bo Knicks yesterday and it reminded me that part of the book on Bo Knicks is he's played 61 college games and there therefore he'll be ready to go in a way that few prospects are Anthony Richardson played what less than 15 or so college games somewhere around that like again we're still in that zone where it's all reasonable to be patient with a guy because the ceiling is also incredibly incredibly high but I want to descend now Mina from preseason football to flag football because the sport is set for Los Angeles the Los Angeles Olympics where you are in 2028 an NFL VP Jeff Miller told reporters earlier this week that the league is talking to the union about NFL players taking part and so big names like Patrick Mahomes Joe burrow Jaylen Herz Tyreek Hill Caleb Williams they've all expressed interest and so should the owners and the union back this idea do you think well the owners uh have different incentives from the union and those incentives pretty much always Financial however they're also competing in this way because the NFL really wants flag football to be a thing Pablo they have been promoting it now for several years and the opportunity to Market their sport on the global stage which is one of the few areas for growth in football completely saturated this country they're seeing dollar signs there however they also are concerned I imagine about the possibility of Patrick Mahomes Caleb Williams Tyre Hill who had whatever getting injured playing this Sport and I think that's what they're going to really seriously consider because it's that risk calculus that will determine whether or not the return on investment is worth it for the NFL but here's the counterargument to that right if you're AR arguing with these owners who are risk averse of course you guys made the Pro Bowl this format like you already made this so toothless when it comes to that exhibition and so if you're listening to your players and I imagine you know it's funny the Olympics were so surprising to me for all these different reasons but one of them was it was so remarkable how much the NBA superstars loved doing it and how much it meant to them and so I just wonder if the NFL guys Mina watched the basketball guys and they were like I want a gold medal gold medals are cool now but that's what the NFL is worried about because the players I'm going to let you in on secret they don't try in the Pro Bowl however if they if they actually were to compete in the Olympics they are not going to let lvia run crazy on them they are going to put forward their best effort so the risk of injury however minute because it is flag football is going to be a little bit higher on account of the effort I do like the idea though that the move for the NFL players is to wait for the flag football guys to lose to lva so you get to be the redeemed team coming over the top and saving America and saving Roger Goodell's risk board that he's envisioned for this sport I mean I think we lost to Japan at one point so yeah the redeemed team is needed all right believe it or not going back up in football the college football season kicks off tomorrow 10th ranked Florida State faces Georgia Tech at noon in Dublin 12 teams make the playoff this season instead of four Pablo does this expansion make you more interested in the outcomes of games involving down ballot teams I love the down ballot aspect here as if like noted comp troller candidate Missouri is finally going to get VP consideration um yes it does I mean I I am I am a realist I believe that college football the second most popular sport in America is going to get all these people to watch all of these new playoff games and yes it's going to give Stakes to games that otherwise would not have them I will simply point out that when it comes to Florida State I was specifically dismayed to learn that because they're probably going to be you know like in that 10 seed in a 12 team field we're not going to get them having the same psychological torment that is setting up why I care about this game they got left out of the four team field and now they get to potentially just sneak in without having to care as much but that in and itself creates Stakes that would not exist otherwise I mean to go back to the question is this expanded playoff make you care more anyone who says no is lying or they're a fan of one of the six programs who have occupied 29 of the 40 seeds the previous iteration of the playoff and actually some of those programs uh should be more interested because of this format I think of a team like the national champions Michigan new coach new quarterback a lot of change there still a very good defense if they say lose to Texas who they play early on in the old playoffs that might be devastating in this new world however they'll still be relevant and that will be the case with so many teams now and throughout the fall for me this is a no-brainer it makes it more interesting yeah plus there's the wrinkle of okay if you're a 5 through 12 seated team and you're on the you know more beneficial part of that bracket you get to host a game potentially at home so if you're old Miss I don't know I think I saw Dan Wetzel say Old Miss Notre Dame you know like at The Grove that's pretty incredible from a pageantry perspective that speaks to why college football is actually magical the actual local cultures and you know the local creatures as well but okay that was a bell let's take a break coming [Music] up time to battle over binaries and toss up so what's first tossup who should the Steelers name as their starting quarterback Russell Wilson or Justin Fields so I'm just going to plagiarize our friend Nate Tyson here Mina who wrote an article spotlighting new OC Arthur Smith and the fact that that dude is a super creative run caller run designer and that means that Justin Fields unlocks a whole bunch of fun stuff that I want to watch as a fan now the Counterpoint to that which I want to acknowledge here is that it turns out when you run a lot of play action that middle of the field tends to be vacated you would like someone to throw to that part of the field and neither Justin Fields nor your boy Russell Wilson tend to do that anymore so I would say Justin Fields with the caveat of please throw to the middle of the field that would also be helpful to this team hasn't been my boy for a couple of years now but that's neither here and there and that's not why I'm going to answer this question the way I am so the way I view this quarterback competition if you can call it that is through the lens of ways probably you might not be familiar with that I'm not even sure if you can drive living in New York it's an app that gives you directions and the way I see this is it's like when you have to go somewhere and ways gives you two bad let's call it bad options one you can sit in traffic for an hour on the freeway two you can take a bunch of sketchy back roads and weird left turns into traffic and but you might get there faster the second option is Justin Fields the first is Russell Wilson who frankly has not been playing good football for a couple of years now little safer perhaps maybe turns the ball over less Fields however gives you more upside gives you more downside probably too but if I'm the Steelers I'm going with the higher variance option in part because of what you alluded to which is Fields dual threat ability and how it impacts The Rush The Run game but just to translate this though if you are the Steelers is based on those metaphors you're also very worried about getting home safe like this is not ideal for you right now this season what's next toss up which team do you have more faith in the AL leading Yankees or the NL leading Dodgers I like that we get to do this topic after you just watched your other boys the Seattle Mariners get stomped by the Los Angeles Dodgers in your new adopted Hometown that's just fun convenience for me uh in New York City rooting for the New York Yankees who happened to have in the two-hole Juan stto and in the three- hole Aaron judge and we both grew up in the steroid era it's not common to see guys pump out numbers like this without the help of something chemical and I have great confidence that this is all above board I have great confidence that this will continue through the postseason this combination of slugging Talent which is almost unprecedented especially in the case of Aaron judge right now and plus the pitching is better right now the Dodgers are hurt the doctor pitchers need medical assistance give me the Yankees uh I will not give you the Yankees in part because I will not give you a better pitching staff than the Dodgers yes the Dodgers have injuries and some of those pitchers are going to be coming back soon and Kershaw has been surprisingly good since doing so but the Yankees Pablo since late June have the worst dra in baseball they also just lost Luis Hill who one of their starters to an injury they do have those Sluggers and as a Mariners fan which you alluded to the numbers they are putting up seem frankly illegal and shouldn't be allowed in baseball but having watched the Dodgers Stomp The mentioned Mariners that lineup is deep and I think it's why I have a little bit more faith in the team here in LA right the caveat being of course at the Major League Baseball postseason is a giant roulette wheel as well at this point I just have faith that my childhood was not a lie and therefore it's the Yankees and therefore I win and therefore that is it with this silly ET Etc [Music] [Music] [Music]
