professionals this is Jake Scott and Ben Anderson on 975 the KSL Sports Zone [Music] all right we're ready it's game day Jake and Ben 975 D KSL Sports Zone and Ben we are live on location we are at one of our very favorite places that of course is peach doors and windows uh and we're excited to be here Cindy is here we're going to talk to her throughout the show Ben you talk about the showroom often and it's fun to uh just to be reminded how much uh cool stuff is out there yeah and it's man just come on in stop by say hi open six days a week come on down and hang out you're going to have a good time check out the different doors different windows and you know what different budget options that's something we probably don't talk about enough with peach doors and windows they can really make sure that they fit not just your home but your budget now if you're like Ben and just want to blow it out you know they'll they'll handle that too whatever yeah I don't expect people to have my budget 2940 South 300 West come see us right here in Salt Lake uh we'd love to see you if we've got a little candy for you or your children uh but I might sneak a donut for you uh oh yeah we've got pastries of in fact we've got a lot of them so if you haven't eaten if you got out the door quickly but you can sneak away from the boss for a minute I'll give you a donut come in come in um college football finally here Ben even though it's somewhat anti-climactic climactic uh given the opponents but uh suu Utah tonight it's it's it's fun college football it it feels all too brief and so enjoy it you know while it goes on but it's it's it's cool I mean it's it's cool because it changes so quickly yeah and that is the one down part is after tonight there's only 11 there's only 11 games left for Utah and that's that's the sad part but uh yeah this is a full weekend and not just a full you know not just with our local teams there's a bunch of games tonight there's like 15 games at least on the docket so uh I imagine everyone locally is going to be glued to Utah but if the game stinks and it's a blow blow out you can flip around there's going to be games tonight including my very own Minnesota Golden Gophers why do taken on UNC why do you have Minnesota socks I found socks randomly and so I bought them they were like three bucks these are like $18 Stance socks but I got them for $3 but they have Minnesota on there well I don't have a college affiliation so I just figured I'd pick somebody but the and I like the color the golden guler is not not good not necessarily who would pick not a not good not a not a history not really like hip in any sort of way and and by the way I I have somebody in my personal orbit that got their grad degree from Minnesota and it's perfectly it's a perfectly lovely school but pretty random that's kind of like me right I just know history just kind of wander around not really spectacular nothing to write home about and they're taking on the Mac Browns but I look good and maroon do you I wear a lot of maroon uh so yeah they're playing Mac Brown tonight at North Carolina just Mac Brown just old man Mac is going to be out there money on Mac lining it up pretty amazing he's had a rebirth at North Carolina again not to go down a rabbit hole but the the whole retread coach thing usually doesn't work agreed but that was a nice that was a that was a right time it was good for him to get out of Texas and good to go back home and and he's had success he's been good again and honestly like I I tease PK that Arizona State should be way better because they have all these built-in advantages that they never seem to uh take advantage of and PK will uh will differ with that but I'd say the same thing about North Carolina football again not to go down a weird rabbit hole but like great school great part of the country yep talent to be recruited all over the place to their North and their South and not to mention their State why why they suck is really inexcusable so ma Brown probably is just smart enough to be like oh yeah I can I can recruit Julius Peppers every year and we can be good yeah I never understood why North Carolina sucked I'm with you uh and they've got the money they've got the donor base now I know most of it goes to basketball but most of it goes to basketball then ah you can we're back to the you cannot be a both a basketball and football school resources been yeah aren't we seeing that in real time with BYU where the resources are going and where they are not now I don't know what colani is working with from an niil standpoint but I have heard Rumblings and we've heard people talk about um in fact Trevor Riley talked about it that they uh are lacking in that department on a in the football end and are not lacking in that department for basketball yeah Utah is fully a football school it's just fully a football school it's probably been that way for two decades now which is crazy to say because it still feels like a relatively new phenomenon but you know this would have to go back to the final four back to 1978 for Utah now look Utah basketball was that good for a long time they were pretty relevant and they had guys going to the NBA but you look at Utah football for the last 20 years have dominated that Athletic program what would it take for BYU for you to fully say this is no longer a football school like is it going to take two decades before you're confident saying it it didn't take two decades to say at Utah football te you know that an interesting thing uh because it it used to not Flip Flip on a dime I mean resources it you it used to be more of an altruistic thing where you did spread your resources out more because you felt the obligation uh to do so but uh it can flip on a dime now I suppose and maybe that's the weakness of uh of the theory is that if you just start pouring all of the resources into one in this nil world you can flip it on a dime I don't know we'll see but I'm surprised that we're he I don't know if I agree with you you can flip it on a dime I I think it also takes cultural understanding the fan base etc etc now how quickly can you do that and are you primed for it the nice thing about BYU basketball specifically it's because basketball is a huge part of the LDS culture just is it is built in there it is you're able to do that and then you mix in going to the big 12 hiring Kevin young it actually kind of had the stars align if it does turn into a basketball school you'll be able to go back and point at a couple of of very specific things that allowed it to happen yeah a billionaire NBA owner EXA cares 100% and again it's not just him but he's kind of the face of the face and also that you were the WCC in basketball and independent in football I mean you actually had more of a home in basketball than you did in football all these little things have put BYU in the spot I guess maybe it's not crazy to recognize why BYU football has and I don't want to use too strong of a word but disintegrated a little bit well yeah I don't know uh I I don't know uh mediocre mediocrity has something to do with it a huge part of it and I think that's what I'm trying to go back to is what what caused the mediocrity well Independence for one big time um I don't know what you want to talk how you want to describe the end of Broncos career I I would never or Bron KN his career his his run of I would never want to accuse somebody of their heart not being in it anymore or mailing it in I I wouldn't go that far but I think he kind of lost his passion for that job just a personal opinion that's not based on inside info or anything I I think he and BYU got tired of each other and he was obviously reinvigorated at UVA I thought and we'll see what happens at New Mexico but I think that relationship had had come to an end I think that's the important word is the relationship because it wasn't just Bronco to BYU it was the fan base towards Bronco there was a lot of things that were no longer as invested where I think BYU fans had become accustomed to being in love with their coach to loving their coach in level Edwards and having that type of relationship I I think that's an important relationship to have so I I think that led to it I think Kanani had an interesting building process because he inherited a pretty good team but that actually led to some bad habits the next year and then you know I think Tanner mum and not to put everything on Tanner but I think it's a factor that he didn't turn out to be the next great BYU quarterback left kind of a a little bit of a stop G I think that they had to reinvent the program around tesm Hill I I think led to some short-term success but longterm left them without uh an identity as an offense hiring tymer because he was a celebrity was a bad idea I mean all those things there's a series of missteps I don't know if I believe in the in the game plan at BYU now honestly and and I've been vocal about that and I like the the coaching staff but I don't think you can Utah BYU and I think they're trying to do that and I don't I don't think that plays into BYU strengths I I want to know why there's a gap in quarter this Gap in quarterbacks between jiren Hall and whoever is next yeah why was it necessary to get Ken slovis and Gary Bohan where was the the break in the chain where was the break in the line and when there are natural breaks in the line what do you do about it going back to Broncos early days when Ben Olsen was gone because that flamed out and he transferred they had Max Hall they found Max Hall and that wasn't Max was next in line that was like okay we got to find a guy and they found an NFL guy I mean and that's what you got to do sometimes but I want to know why they haven't found that guy for two years or at least the vision of that guy and now colani doesn't have the Rope to even Explore it really because quarterback has to help the Run game apparently right and that that's the other issue is there's not been that second fallback that safety net that is either a dynamite tight end or receiver even though you did have nakua there uh or a running back that steps in and says okay well I'll just carry the load if you don't have a good quarterback I'm going to do all the hard work but then that goes back to the offensive line again it's the series of just Little nothing stopped the fall I I am the the year 2020 was so frustrating for so many reasons but one of them was BYU had their best football and basketball team that they had had in a long time and I I think that's true I mean the the what basketball was robbed of a NCAA tournament birth and they were pretty good that's Mark Pope's first year if uh you remember back Ben and uh and the football team you know got to play 12 games or whatever but it just wasn't the the schedule where anybody would believe you know what I mean but they were really good but think back to that year at what everybody was complimenting Roderick on was that he shook the wit you know conservatism or or the and he was creative and he was using uh Zack Wilson and all these different throws and all these different patterns and Dax Mill and all this different creative stuff Zach yes was a mobile guy but not one time did anybody say like well he's really helping the Run game out there like that wasn't that wasn't what how we were describing the offense that BYU was running it was it was go back and watch it it was it was creative it was letting Zack Wilson be this creative quarterback that went out and carved up defenses the problem was the defenses were not Alabama right you know what I mean and so then it gets lost in the shuffle but I I I'm concerned that they don't have a quarterback that they can that can play that way so then that begs the question as to why and that doesn't mean like like honestly Utah without Cam Rising last year was a a great example of how Utah's really existed and thrived in the Pack 12 and that's the struggle you know we're going to it's going to be a knife fight M and you may be bigger and more talented than me and I may lose but you're going to lose next week yeah because you're going to limp out of this thing the the struggle right I mean Travis Wilson isn't going to light you on fire but he's going to do just enough and do this weird gangly run in the fourth quarter that it's going to be in doubt and you're not going to get it done yeah I mean that's the that's the story of how Utah win wins football games and you add in a talented quarterback and some other things and that's how they go to the Rose Bowl or whatever but BYU shouldn't be about the the struggle I don't think that's how they win games I don't think the the the Zone read to generate a run game because the quarterback might keep it one out of four times is not I don't think that's the blueprint down there I don't uh to make a tennis analogy BYU needs to win with their serve and you need to just return the ball right Utah just wants to get these long rallies Michael Chen yeah to return everything real circus out there like you can't get anything by him I mean sliding all over the place diving doing all this sort of thing but to your point and this goes back to your well they just need to find their next Tai Demar and I'm I I'm I'm saying that a little bit but that kind of has been your point and guess who their last Tai Demar was his name was Zack Wilson right I mean he was special that and that goes back to the you know A-Rod was doing all these specific things it's like well he had a great player Zack Wilson was a great College I know it goes hand in hand I realize so along those lines you need to have the big serve and if you don't have the big serve you're not going to win the point and that's kind of what BYU has been fighting right now because bannan isn't that redl isn't that Keen slovis wasn't that jiren Hall was kind of that he wasn't Zack Wilson good but he was good enough to win you a bunch of gam but they developed jiren Hall at least and he was the the the next one to go you know it wasn't scramble around to to find your quarterback and even if he did have a quarterback battle in Camp cuz colani learned that lesson with Tanner mum years ago that you've always got to be competing for the job he was the the next guy to go they peeled him off the baseball team they saw the potential they they developed him and they haven't they haven't done that here and jiren was mobile too and never were we talking about well thank goodness he can run the Zone read Because if he couldn't run the Zone read I mean we'd never move the football I just can't believe that Tyler aler I right of course I mean all those things this is this is the the Plinko game of just like what which bump are you which Peg are you going to bump off of and go a certain direction you know what we all revert to what we're comfortable with when we're desperate or not desperate is such a strong word I don't I really don't mean to be that hyperbolic I guess but we when when there's adversity we all go back to what we know and we all go back to what we're comfortable with and so there's adversity and I talked to H about this on the round table there's adversity at BYU from a job security sense that Kanani really hasn't faced it's always been with colani about extensions right are you going to give him an extension not you just beat USC or you're going to give him the that's always been the story it hasn't been well is he going to be back next year and I'm not trying to pile on anything but for the first time there is that sentiment in the wind and I think you can feel it in the way that he addresses the media like Jeremiah and and Alex were laughing about salty colani and oh I like salty colani and I told him I said I don't like salty colani I don't CU that's not who he is that's not how he rolls that tells me that there is pressure on him and he takes it seriously that's why maybe salty colani isn't a bad thing I mean he takes it seriously and he's going to coach and and players will tell you that he can be salty you know away from the media and I totally believe that as I would with any coach but that's not really who he is I think he's feeling some pressure I bet A-Rod is feeling some pressure and they're reverting to what they're comfortable with okay but what is that that's that's the interesting thing for me if you say well they go to what is home and what's comfortable I don't know if I can perfectly describe what that is where I can just go to the Bor game for Utah and say that's it play great defense run the ball a little bit be super conservative offensively and your defense is going to return enough serves to give you a chance to win this game because your opponent's going to make a mistake and Baylor did so what is BYU's version of that what is Kanani's safe space at home that allows them to win games you know what what's funny is that like Zack Wilson forced colani and A-Rod to get out of their comfort zone because they were they were grateful to have him you know they flipped him last minute from boisey State they were stoked he was there they needed somebody and they allowed him to develop I remember his freshman year oh you just had so many arguments with Gordon about this uh like his freshman year at the end he had that perfect bowl game right where he didn't miss a pass and then the next year he was hurt and he beat USC the next year but still everybody was like well is he really any good you know and it it was this this crazy doubt that surrounded him and then again it's so disappointing the 2020 season was the way that it was because he just blossomed and he was healthy and he was he was playing like you know like free yeah and I you don't get that freedom if you don't have also the other end where the team's like okay well we're really excited he's here so we're going to let him do you know like the Rockets with James Harden oh we're so just grateful he's on the team we're gon to just let him do whatever he wants and it really worked out well then if you don't have that guy why not where's it been your BYU that's how it works at BYU tough standard I know but your quarterback you're qbu and you know what a lot of people would kill to have that problem kill to have that problem your problem is you have a great run of qu qubs historically and you have the ability to get those quarterbacks and the expectation is you have them that's fine a good problem to have yeah it is 975 the KSL Sports Zone it's time to break down the biggest stories of the day this is the top three stories of the day on KSL sports.com 975b KSL Sports [Music] I see the Bad Moon Rising I see trouble on the [Music] way I see wakes and lightning reasons like this Ben I'm I'm going to turn into a six an ESPN Plus subscription does not give you access to stream ESPN's traditional TV networks or the content on them there's a big question tonight because a lot of people are trying to watch the Utah Southern Illinois game uh Southern Utah game excuse me and it's only on ESPN plus and if you sign up for ESPN plus you don't get ESPN ESPN stream all of that you just get to stream the dregs of college foot yeah you'll get like a lot of Cincinnati Reds games or something you get a lot of random weird games in the middle of nowhere a lot of socer 801424 dish is the first thing that I'll say 801424 dish second of all I you know what I'm going to be a Six Flags guy from now on I got to find a new I don't know what what I got to go DreamWorks or something like I I got to get out from under this mouse that's that's ridiculous okay that is ridiculous yeah and then the question is like how many games are going to be on ESPN plus this year so is it worth figuring out is it worth buying ESPN Plus for tonight's game and the games over the weekend or do you just go and find a restaur that's going to show the game and have dinner and then save yourself a bunch of money if I'm a restaurant I'm scrambling today well wow I'd rather have would you rather have Pack 12 Network or have to subscribe to ESPN plus boy you're really giving me some good options there well I mean if you have to get over or if you have to get you know satellite or cable yeah anyway I'd probably rather have the Pack 12 Network I guess I'm with you it's not some extra thing that I'm now arm Twisted into doing way to go everyone huge win huge W all right uh time for the top three stories of the day at KSL sports.com brought to you by J Brooks Jewelers to locations to serve you one on Winchester Street across from fash Place Mall the other Traverse Mountain in Lehi all right Christian where are we starting today number one it's game day for the youths uh how's the I'm excited to see cam Rising play again yeah I know there's been a lot of talk about oh how quickly can Isaac Wilson get out there and show Utah fans that he has the potential to be the future of the uh of the program man cam Rising is really good cam Rising might retire as second best quarterback in franchise history I just think it's going to be really hard to catch Alex Smith barring catching lightning in a bottle and something really magical happening at Utah this year but he's right there for number two certainly has the most success as a winner at Utah with what he did in the Pack 12 and now going to the big 12 yeah I'm excited to see him get out there and play again and he's fun to watch he's a fun football player to watch um I wonder in a game where they should win comfortably you know how much he lets it Loose does that make any sense CU he's the way cam Rising lets it Loose isn't necessarily you know what you do in a game like this so I I'm I will be most curious I guess been to sum it up in attempts how many attempts does he have given how long he plays and what's what's the offense going to look like from a run pass balance standpoint I'm really curious to see if it changes he has said and Utah has said that they expect to be more pass heavy this year because they have Dorian singer and bran keithy is back and they've got money Parks they like some of the receiving core that they have they've got Landon King at tight end so they've got a deep room there but also this first game I want to figure out who who can carry the rock I want to know who's going to be consistent because as we talked about when things go bad at Utah you go safe and when you go safe that means you have a reliable running back who picks up yards and a stellar defense they know they've got the Stellar defense who's the running back so I try and figure that out today as much as possible I bet you know I guess that's I guess that's my point I've been hearing well this is the year the Utah's going to cut the offense loose man they're going to sling it all over the park I've been hearing that forever I'm actually curious to see if it comes to fruition like by need as you referenced the Run game like you don't have anybody you feel comfortable with carrying the load or by Advantage which is the other thing you mentioned where you have all these receivers tight ends Etc and you feel like the passing game for the first time ever is your Edge I'll be curious to see how that plays out I also want to see Brant keithy I want to see how keithy looks he's more than a year removed from the last time he stepped on the field how does he look because again I know Dalton concade stepped in and kind of erased the memory of how good brand keithy was but there was a reason brand keithy was ahead of dton concade in the pecking order at that point and it wasn't because brand it wasn't it wasn't because Utah misread the situation they just happened to have maybe the best two tight ends in the country at the same time but brand keithy was really really good he was an extraordinarily high level player so I'm excited to see where he is healthwise getting back onto the field because he should dominate this type of game well he may may not play I mean because Caleb loner is going to going to be an All-American so did you know he's 6'8 he's you know he's got a 36 in he's going to catch every touchdown Brandt's not even getting GNA Get Off the Bench I I have seen or heard a lot of people saying like well you get him in the Red Zone use him there I'm like you know who I'd rather use brand keithy right like Landon King guys who have proven that they can do it I I get it guys Brent keithy is as much of a mismatch for opposing defenses as Caleb loner be in fact more so why not throw it to your offensive tackle yeah they're big they're probably tall it's probably tall yeah yeah with all with with with room for Caleb loner to grow and figure it out and it would be cool if he has this great story but if Utah needs him at any point it's a little bit Troublesome you shouldn't need Caleb loner at any point you know who ruined all these stories honestly is Ziggy anaw because he was a gimmicky story like these are gimmicky stories think of uh who was the Monstrous offensive lineman that Utah brought in or maybe it was a d lineman remember he was like well there was the one guy who was like 500 lb that BYU recruited that never saw the field uh there's been any number of of rugby players that are supposed to be the next greatest thing uh like there there these kind of stories that catch everybody's eye right and and loner is only the latest but Ziggy is the only one I can really think of that was like Mo longi at BYU yeah zigg is the only one I could think of like turned into like it played out you know what I mean yeah you know what was a really successful story was Thomas yasman who was a rugby player who came over to Utah and was their third string tight end scored a couple of touchdowns and got a cup of coffee with the Broncos this year in the preseason it's like that's a huge success story it's a little bit of a gimmick but that was a huge success story that would be absolutely best case scenario for Caleb loner and I'm not betting on it all right what's next number two jiren Hall was waved by the Vikings Tyler Huntley was cut by the Browns well that sucks yeah that stinks it's just bad news that is bad news um you know I I would be surprised if both of them didn't get another bite at the Apple in some way shape or form what I worry about with Tyler Hunley is that the book on him or not the book because I don't even know how true it is but the the narrative was was that Baltimore was the only place he could play because his game mirrored that of Lamar Jackson and if he were to get hurt you could plug in Tyler Hunley and they could do similar things I hope that that's not true for him I hope he gets the opportunity to prove out and be like no I'm a I'm a quarterback I'm not you know just uh uh under study does that make any sense like I'm not I'm not just the body double no I am uh Mel Gibson [Laughter] he will he will land with the practice squad somewhere and inevitably in the middle of the Season he will get called up and have a chance to play as will jiren Hall the exact same thing is going to happen it's tough that they got waved after surviving that initial 53 man roster cut uh but then teams tighten up see who else get waved uh and decide to make moves there so uh I hope they both make it back I hope they both get chances to maybe start again in the NFL but at least uh land on a a normal roster the nice thing is you know Tyler Huntley made a decent amount of money playing for Baltimore for a couple of years we'll see if jiren Hall can back some of that up as well it's tough NFL's brutal and quarterback's basically impossible to make it when Brett rippen gets signed over you in Minnesota that's tough how hard it to make it well Brett's old man was probably doing some lobbying Mark ripping and I don't trust the Vikings all that much as a team as an organization nor the Browns so well well yeah they ran off Kurt Cousins way to go for Sam darnold congratulations and then think that keeping Jefferson during a rebuild is a good idea yeah all right uh what's next number three it's a packed slate of college football games tonight my Minnesota Golden goers taken on USC that might be the highlight I thought you said UNC is it USC UNC what did I say did I just say USC UNC yeah North Carolina is is North Carol South Carolina and Southern Carol all different yeah uh UNC excuse me um but also Colorado back in Action tonight oh soft old Dion going up against uh North Dakota State yeah that's the game on ESPN so if you have ESPN plus you will not get that remember but how hilarious would it be if North toota State ran over him like if that game's close it's a really bad sign like physically just ran over him hilarious yeah you cannot have this game be within a touch down at halftime well if it is you better not uh point that out or else answer your questions anymore you're out of there Ben but yeah fun games excited to have this back and then uh tomorrow morning excited to recap what did happen over the weekend and the the games we can look back at and then get ready for Saturday uh you really into the uh Sacramento State San Jose State game uh that's a good game only uh what two points the spread there I'm excited for that Coastal Carolina Jacksonville State Duane Toledo yes please but six o'clock tonight North Carolina Minnesota probably the best game on the docket Central Michigan Central Connecticut see if I were Kevin Graham I'd get ESPN plus because there's no way Central Michigan is on TV ever go chips fire up chips so you're telling me I have to sign up for ESPN plus and it's just the dregs that's all I get is the drgs yeah but if you're a sicko that works out and then access Brian wind horse's stupid new thing or something or does he have a new thing I don't know what what do you get with ESPN plus I don't know I don't have it I'm gonna have to figure out what to do tonight I'm telling you that Mouse greedy greedy greedy brutal it's about to get $20 a month from you and I probably I don't know might be coming over to your house okay I'll buy it you bring chips but I'll tell you if I'm a restaurant today I'm probably scrambling I've been at enough sports bars that have no clue about that sort of thing that like if you if you know the owner of a sports bar call them today and say dude you got to have ESPN plus got to have it or you're going to have a riot on your hands raise all of your food items by a quarter and by the end of the day it'll year a lot of BYU basketball ball games were on last year uh so future Utah games will be too I also watch a lot of USC and European soccer so there you go that is true about the basketball BYU was on ESPN plus a lot last year that's just their third tier rights partner because they had to bend over backwards to accommodate the stupid Longhorn Network yep they don't have a third tier rights partner and so it ends up on ESPN plus which is probably the direction we're headed anyway but I am annoyed that you don't get all ESPN games if you have to subscribe to ESPN plus now that's ridiculous not doing their work for them but you do have kids who are Bluey fans so you'll get that if you package it with Disney and you were a big fan of the bear season 3 specifically so you will get that with Hulu if you package that together as well so there are some PL except for I dodged a huge bullet going to Disneyland earlier this year did you hear about this story now it's a serious story like it's very sad a a woman died because she had a peanut allergy and she told the the staff she had a peanut allergy whatever you know she passed away eating food that she shouldn't have eaten well they tried to sue Disney Disneyland or Disney or whatever and apparently if you click to terms for Disney plus you agree to not sue the company ever uh I did see that that was a report I suspect that will not hold up in court just happy nothing happened to me at Disneyland I suspect agreeing to a uh TV terms is going to make it really difficult for uh to be enforced that if you get shot on Disney property I if I be held reliable or what am I agreeing to now go going to have to read that book before I sit down to watch the game you can uh there's like talk to text now right you can have someone read it to you drive home and listen to it on the way home terms of service agreements as you pick the kids up from school I'm agreeing to what goofy gets to do what now I'm just cranky about it Ben I get it again 424 dish 801 424 dish you got to watch watch the games how many different things do we have to subscribe to now to get the NBA uh well it's not this year it doesn't start until next summer but peacock ESPN Amazon ABC which comes with the ESPN and there's a fifth right not streaming online isn't there a fifth Amazon NBC ESPN True TV no I don't think true TV's got anything yet it's at least four they were going to mix TNT in and TNT did not end up making the cut yeah what's the latest with that they still going to court or NBA continues to say you you're not you didn't match nothing you said matches the contract that we ended up building out with with Amazon and I really think that's going to come down to the ability to stream and reach you know everyone in South America and everybody in Europe which Amazon has the ability to do and turn yet when the head of Turner went out and said we don't need the NBA he really that was a real boo boo wasn't it gotta be careful what you say words have consequences things you say do matter that was a real a real boo boo uh we have talked about Utah football and their special teams in the past and I think one of the things I qualified that made them special was a superstar on the roster Devon Lloyd was a superstar Eric wed was a superstar oh special teams not special team not special teams now actually was very Utah's best teams generally have been Lakota Ben was going into a hot punting real quick they've Gotta Have Dynamite punski which is kind of true I need Co Becker and bow Meister to have big ears special teams meaning Utah more elite team best teams they're the top tier teams in Utah history have had a superstar I'm gonna take cam rising and Brant keithy off the table because I actually think it's hard for a tight end to be a superstar in college even if you have a really good quarterback like you do in cam is there another player on this roster you could see evolving into that type of game breaker that superstar that changes the entire Dynamic of Utah's football program at least for this season that gives them that edge because when you're at your best you just have a player who's better than everybody and it's it's I wish it was more complicated than that it would uh make our jobs feel more special but sometimes Devon Lloyd's just the best player on the field every time he suits up and that changes the game um I think there are multiple candidates for that uh Ben uh we could look into it in fact I want to bring up a roster to make sure you know we don't uh we don't miss anybody and of course there we go uh like immediately what the whole defensive line comes right to to uh right is Junior tauna tuna is like he's he's special he's a very special player can your D tackle like start lay was enormously good yeah and so was Luther Ellis I mean yes is the answer to that question especially in Utah's defense yes okay because it does free everything else up it's not the sexiest thing but yes if you're getting double teamed every single possession every single snap well Lander Barton's gonna go off karini Reed's gonna go off I mean karini Reed or Lander Barton yeah those are probably the two name are they you know the next Devon Lloyd or whatever and at the linebacking position I think that you actually have the ability to do that um you know who's Utah's next Dynamic safety going to be the quarterback of the defense if you talk to Mor against scall because they're going to find one you know I mean the the star what you're talking about is probably not even on offense I mean even if you want to eliminate cam rising and bran keithy that's just not historically where it's been now it would be huge if it was if if Dorian singer could have a Darren Carrington like impact for Utah that would change them except for did Darren Carrington have a yards he had like 600 yards yeah right no he did not have 12200 yards he had 600 yards so no I don't think it's GNA be singer no I don't it's what position is he playing yeah right no I'm with you and you know what the what the I mean I laughed at The Loner thing but you know what the obnoxious storyline of this year's you camp was is well they have six tight ends well they have six tight ends well did you know that they have six tight ends like the whole narrative is how they're not going to throw at the singer so yeah right so no no I don't think it's going to be Dorian singer is that fair no it's it's totally fair I'm with you if you had a guy who was super productive and Utah found ways to get him the ball every chance they got it would be really helpful you might have to end up drawing up ways to get him the ball yeah and maybe you even find ways to get him involved in Jets sweeps and different options so he does touch the ball and AIDS the Run game which is not exactly how you want to be using your deep threat wide receiver but maybe that's what you have to do with them so potential Stars I mean you can go to the the Conor o tool right the supposed to be the the great Rush end at Utah and I would argue that Utah rarely has great Rush ends it's just that their defensive tackles take up all the blocks and so the rush end gets an opportunity to rush the quarterback I mean Corners so the quarterback has to hold on to the ball and then all of a sudden he's getting blown up point of the defense so I mean any of those guys honestly could be Stars I mean in the past I'd tell you that the linebackers usually aren't the star position on Utah's defense and this year they're great linebackers and Devon Lloyd certainly was a great linebacker so you know that I think that's why there is such optimism around Utah is because they return everybody there's there's a lot of great players and then the positions where they're reloading so to speak reloading to steal a cliche are positions like safety and running back that they traditionally find no problem so I get the optimism like um JJ and Alex on the college football Round Table Ben asked me to be pessimistic they're like you're Mr Mr pessimism like why is there a reason to be pessimistic about Utah there really isn't I mean I don't believe that Isaac Wilson is taking them to the playoff necessarily if Cam Rising gets hurt but I mean that goes for basically every team in college football and they're starting quarterbacks so you know Utah is no different there and you know I'm hope for the best kind of guy so I hope cam plays every game and if he does then they should be great I mean they didn't identify a running back really last year and they still won eight games so I think they'll find their guy especially since they're going to spread out the field with all these weapons and all 18 tight ends you're going to have to guard all of them at all times and will'll open things up for the running back I mean there's just there's really not a whole lot of reason to be pessimistic maybe if the uh if the o line completely underperforms that could change everything I suppose but and they are young at the tackle on both sides and that is the question but they are really good on the interior of the offensive line the guards are good the center's good so you've got to make sure that your tackles are good but the nice thing is you've got two fourstar tackles on both I love it that they started fono last year that I thought that was a great move it was gutsy and it will pay off ideally he should be he should be really good this year I'm expecting him to be really good you get thrown into the deep end like that yep you sharpen that sword pretty quick you hone that technique which is what they say you know most offensive lineman need need to do when they get in and the size was always there so I mean that's I think they should be pretty good I don't know no and Utah didn't expect to have Cam Rising this year they thought his eligibility would be up and he would be gone is my you know obviously expectation but they are now reaping the reward of starting Lander Barton to years ago as a true freshman game one against Florida and then yes uh going young at tackle last year and having that opportunity now with with uh with Foo coming back in his second season to be ready to go and be a future star ideally and a future NFL player yeah you are reaping the rewards of some of those young gambles that you took that did lose you games at points last year or two years ago and is bow Meister going to bang those punts I mean that's what I really want to talk about special teams punting and situational football players yeah that is where I thought you were going when you started you're like if you look at Utah's special teams hot punter take on Deck it's game day Ben's going right to the Special Teams I was on the Pack 12 Network's greatest 10 greatest players in Utah football history and I was talking about our friend Tom Hackett being arguably the best player in Utah football history he is not arguably he is is the two-time ray guy award winner the most celebrated player at his position in Utah football history unbelievable the best punter in the year backtack year or in the country backto back years however the less you punt the better have a great kickoff guy have the best kickoff oh some of those years under hacket the more they punted the better I don't know if you're remembering those years accur ideally you were driving the ball down the field and you never have to punt but yes Utah was not driving the ball down the field and Tom did I bet you $1 thousand dollar Tom was wit's favorite player of all time you hack it go uh go stop that ball at the one I bet he would have liked it if Tom liked football with all due respect to Tom who cares he put his defense it wit's whole point purpose in life is to put his defense in good positions a punter that could just glue it to the field at the one yard line every time he kicked and that's Whit's favorite Guy Tom Lis aota Lis sakota did this also they were they were culture Setters you uh the freeness that Tom played with the Swagger that Tom played with the I'm going to catch the ball with one hand against Oregon and Sprint for 40 yards and pick up a first down and try and drill somebody try and run somebody over as an offensive player that spread that really did help that Utah team they they needed that juice and he brought that do you have those types of guys that bring a little bit of that that energy and that excitement to the team fat guys yeah slow Fat Tom fat guys long hair Tom need a couple of them cam Rising picking up where Tom left off Tom has since shaved off all of his hair but has he yeah yeah Tom's a Baldi I haven't seen Tom in a while he doesn't live here anymore I think he lives in California and it's a bald man well he living the life taking a turn for the better for the better well you and I have argued about whether or not cam rising's hair is too long Tom's Tom's hair was pretty darn long too okay I've got no problem with long hair cam Rising but I'm telling you what if I were a defensive player that hair isn't surviving the game game you know what I mean not not most of it like not intact like aren't you just inviting you know what I mean just just inviting somebody to yank on that thing and it doesn't look cool to tuck it in your in your jersey that doesn't look cool oh you can't got to be out and flowing no I know that's the whole point in having it but it seems to me like it's going to end up a like a on somebody's wall you know what I mean like got cam rising's rat tail inside my locker ripped it out of his head right like you can see part of the scalp here he's got a big chunk in the back after I would got through with him no thank you but that's part of his charm right cising he's the guy who got his head taken off against USC and bounce right back up he's just kind of Mr Cool he does it his own way and doesn't play quarterback the way a lot of players play quarterback and but I think that's like having hair that long and we're not talking like if you haven't seen cam recently not like his previous where he's kind of got a little hair out the bottom or whatever but it's like down to his midback yeah it's long maybe maybe he trimmed up maybe further that that is that is like the the NBA player going to the club with uh $100,000 necklace like you're just saying rob me yeah like cam Rising is just saying tackle me by my hair got he's got a sign that says please bring me down by my hair but to that point he's a fun player player to watch man I mean that hit against USC was unbelievable and to come back into the game the I mean was it even a play didn't he just pick up his helmet and go right back no it was a huge shot and and him getting back up was crazy but I wonder if the the helmet like the the defensive player got the helmet just like just right that it I mean it flew yeah like I wonder if that's one of those things where you it would it looked worse than it was cuz the helmet flew so far I don't know man he got l I know that's probably not fair but the fact that the the fact that the helmet ended up in the fifth row made a difference and I'm excited to watch I'm excited to watch him I I I think it uh it's cool to have both he and bran keithy back out I'm glad their stories were not ended due to injury at least so far I'm not accusing him of being Jim Edmonds in the Outfield where you're so slow that you die for every ball and then everybody thinks that you're good but there's a little bit you seen those those Jim edman catches you're right every time cam does something it has to be special cuz he's not you know Lamar he's a gamer he is a gamer that's his thing more Jacob Ben coming up next 975 the KSL Sports Zone your home for the best college football coverage in Utah is on the KSL Sports s the Cougars kick off the 2024 season with a home battle against Southern Illinois your home for the best coverage of cougar football is right here on 975 the kosl Sports Zone this is Jake Scott and Ben Anderson on 975 the KSL Sports Zone [Music] [Laughter] Jake and Ben 975 the KSL Sports Zone Jake Scott Ben Anderson thank you very much for making us a part of your day Ben we were just talking about branding off the air we're just having a chat about that did you see the Capri Sun is moving away from the pouch really look they're going to a bottle oh I've got pouches I I've got pouches in my house right now I like the pouch don't ruin you are that is your thing nobody is drinking Capri Sun for the juice I assure you correct it's like if squeez it we're like we don't like the squeeze it bottles like that the only thing you have is that little that tab at the top you've got a niche yeah right kids love you because of the pouch don't what are you doing don't move away from the pouch all right no I'm with you that's a that's a moronic idea I'm just frustrated I just saw CEO that like we need to spice up the brand I think it might have to do with the the Earth muffins you think so uh Capron adopt stronger paper straws in pursuit of recyclability blah BL there's never been a good paper straw yet I'm not going to go on that tangent but there's yet to be a good paper straw so I don't know it doesn't say but I I've got a picture of it right here bottles lame Ben that is lame that'd be like if Ben all of a sudden started covering highlighter or something instead of basketball yeah bad branding yeah right you're not the high Li guy you're the basketball guy I'm the basketball guy I've brand i' I've earned that branding whether anyone likes it or not you're not into badminton I like it I like boxing I'm excited for hockey be dumb to change everything now do you really like boxing I do like boxing quite a bit I uh I take in more boxing than you would think really yeahuh ESPN plus well no everything's pay-per-view or oh so that's another thing whatever is that you got to have thank goodness I'm not a boxing fan Don King still a thing uh he's alive no I mean thank you no is he still promoting is that Bob arum guy still running the show uh I don't know who runs it it's a bunch of corrup people yeah it's crazy it's the best part about boxing it's organized crime they have two people figh it out for them it's amazing it is amazing it's why it's so big in Vegas it's big everywhere for that reason I uh I saw Raging Bull I know how it works yeah do you want to salvage some football here Ben uh one of the things A-Rod talked about in Camp and uh did so I it was yesterday uh talked about Alex Rodriguez uh needing to organized crime needing to rotate a lot of guys uh because they want to see who is actually able to contribute uh I want to hear what A-Rod had to say about it I don't sense any division At All by any I think everybody wants to win and we're going to rotate a lot of people at receiver and tight end and running back and once you're playing whoever's in the game is in the game and got to go execute I do think they are just still trying to figure some things out I mean this is just not this doesn't again I I said this earlier this this week and you made fun of me for it which is part for the course but I just don't know if BYU's had a good fall camp and you asked how would I know it's like you're right I don't but I just I kind of get a lot of these read between the lines things of just like we're yeah we're trying to figure out who's going to play trying to figure out who the guys are Ben you are how late can you wait for are way overthinking that that clip okay just listen all that is is a word salad I don't know who asked him the question but long and short of it this this is just I'm going to talk until I feel like I've taken up enough time that I can stop talking wait Play Play that word salad again I don't sense any division At All by anybody I think everybody wants to win and we're going to rotate a lot of people at receiver and tight end and running back and once you're playing whoever's in the game is in the game and got to go execute we have players on the team we're going to play those players and we're in the when they're in the game they need to play that was that was that was Zero there was nothing there you're right there wasn't anything there and you know what I do know about coaches especially coaches in the nil era right now you know what they do love talking about they're players naming them by name saying who's going to be out there saying who the guy is going to be coaches like doing that coaches like identifying their stars because that is a win for them that's good for you to be able to say we got this guy we got this guy we got this guy and BYU has good wide receivers we've got to figure out what's going to happen at the running back position I don't know if LJ Martin's going to play this weekend we don't know all of that all of these ores listed and I get you can say well we're all good everyone's good everyone's going to play I I want to know who is going to play I Want to Know What To Expect and I think BYU coaches would be happier if they knew what to expect and I think there are places where they don't know what to expect yet I think they know who's going to play because they have players on the team and those players are going to play and when they're in the game we expect them to play because they're players and they play next question that was a guy who's that was his 1500th interview in Camp he's so tired of the boo asking him the same stupid questions over and over again he said I'm just going to give you a word salad to get you out of my face maybe maybe it is I hope you're right I hope you're right listen to how little he says here I want to play it again I want to play Listen to The nothingness that is this quote I don't sense any division At All by anybody I think everybody wants to win and we're going to rotate a lot of people at receiver and tight end and running back and once you're playing whoever's in the game is in the game and got to go execute once you're playing who's ever in the game is in the game cuz you're playing and you're players and they are players that will be playing and they're playing to win I don't know if you knew this but that the playing point for the players playing is to play and to play more I think you're making my point when you lack specificity I think sometimes that is a cover for how many times could he say oh Chase Roberts is great oh I mean this guy is wonderful you do it all the time camon Wht can't stop and I'm trying to compare everything to BYU and Utah Whit can't stop talking about bad moon cam Rising how good he is how much they enjoy him and they talk about their great players has a word salad like that identical to that I'm sure somewhere in the mountains of tape where it most 90% of what they say is just word salad bin and then like you and I are supposed to read into every little well it didn't specifics he said multiple players they going to play I I just think that was a whole lot of nothing I would feel more comfortable with BYU coming out of Camp if I felt like the quarterback situation was Stronger the running back situation was Stronger they've named the offensive line we know who's going to be playing on the offensive line I just they know who's going to play maybe they're not in love with who's going to play that's the thing and look they it's not like I think they're stumbling around in the darkness no they're not no idea the first time they've ever seen these guys but do I think week three this team's going to look a lot different than it does week one I think it's probably accurate I do think that's going to happen I think you're going to have different guys playing once you get into the Big 12 schedule and not just due to injuries I think we're going to see some changes early on when things aren't clicking right that's going to be my guess and I think we're going to see it against SMU we're going to see it against Wyoming and then once they finally get into Big 12 Play you're going to get a better sense of what this team looks like and that's hard that's a hard place to go into when we're talking about the pressure that already exists for BYU because truthfully they probably need to be three and one to start the season if they want to go a Bull game yeah okay and that might need to be 3 and0 and I don't know if they're going to be 3 and0 especially if they don't have some of these questions answered where would the changes come are you talking offensively or defensively well probably both I mean you can continue to sort these things out they're making changes at safety they've got to figure out some of those answers but I would guess on the offensive side of the ball where running back's going to be a big one quarterback is very clearly an opportunity to be changed even if they have a succinct clear cut number one starter now that doesn't mean that they wouldn't change it if the ball is not being moved or if they're not winning games if they can't they if they're getting you know 215 yards of offense in week two they can make a change of quarterback and if LJ Martin's just not fully healthy and isn't ready to go I think you'll see a running back by committee or at least some different options getting those opportunities and then yeah just going to be mixing and Ming matching pie pieces and then you need the offensive line to play a lot better than it did last year and all those things start to switch but they're the ones that are set the offensive line they are named I think they only have one running back so I don't know if that's really going to change out all that much I think his health is is a factor sure uh I don't think the receivers are going to change all that um I actually think that's probably the one position group where A-Rod really means it that wow we're going to get a lot of guys in and because that's been the theme uh throughout Camp so I don't I don't know I'd be surprised if they switched out quarterbacks on it ly now if they lost three games in a row or something like that then drastic times but I'd be surprised if they switched out I believe them when they think they can't run the ball without R left R left I I believe what they're saying I think they're going to try and grind out wins this year again I don't think that's how I would try and win at BYU but I think that's what they're going to try and do I don't think they're going to move off that I think that's why they're going to pick the quarterback that they're going to pick no I don't know I don't know you know it would be maybe a lot more difficult decision if Bohanan was truly slinging it all over the field I don't know but I think that's why they picked him I believe him I believe him when they say it I don't think they're hiding some Dynamic run and shoot offense that's that we're going to see against Southern Illinois I don't think that's coming I agree with you I think BYU is going to try and bump bump and skid their way to six wins but if you're going to go with Red's laugh and it's going to be because of the Run game and what he does for the Run game The Run game better be successful okay and if it's not if you're just saying well even if our best option at quarterback we feel is because he helps the Run game and we can't move the ball by running it and bannan's a better passer than redl is they'll go to bannan they'll switch it up and go to a pass heavy offense if they have to because they do have talent at wide receiver they've got talent at tight end yeah but if they're only getting aund or 200 yards of total offense they probably are 0 and three well they'll beat well you know what I mean they're one and two lose to Southern uh or excuse me you could lose to SMU and you could lose to uh you can lose to anybody if you only have 200 yards of total offense yeah so I don't I don't think that's going to happen again I would guess but I don't know I do think there's a gap in the recruiting at quarterback that nobody's talking about and where's the next man where was the where was the next guy after jiren Hall they didn't have one and I talked to uh I talked to hatch about this the other day off the air and he was mentioning U Baylor Romney Baylor wasn't it yeah he retired year yeah right he wasn't it maybe he and hatch kind of retreated and said well he was the stop Gap that they needed and okay maybe that's true but that's not who I'm talking about well stop gaps aren't hard to find in college football anymore I'm talking about the next guy yeah the next guy at BYU yeah the guy who's going to start 24 games ta was different but he was still a guy mhm Zach was a guy jiren was a guy talk about guys who are the face of your team for two years and are really good yeah Max Hall was a guy John Beck was a guy Brandon dolman was a guy where how why this why the Breaking the Chain i' I'd say jiren Hall was a guy but I'm surprised they didn't and and maybe he just wouldn't have gone but kind of what I had heard is they just were not all that interested in Isaac Wilson and that just that's really surprising to me well I'd move off Lisa too if you think that's the issue if you think that's the problem but doesn't it feel like and and maybe there's just the hype because Wht has named him number two and and lewig has named him number two at Utah but didn't you think they we'd be having a different conversation about the Utah quarterbacks if if Isaac Wilson was there right now or BYU's quarterbacks excuse me if uh if Isaac Wilson was there no I don't think colani is starting a true freshman in this season of All Seasons but I think the belief is that he's going to beat be there by the middle of the Season he might take over because I mean there's talking about McKay hillstead taking over halfway through the season see I I heard Scotty talking about that and Scotty would would know better than me probably but I'd be surprised if that happened maybe it does doesn't seem like he's had the strong camp that a lot of people expected no I expected him to be more part of the conversation wasn't at all he hasn't at all basically since day one and again he's little yeah he is small so I don't I don't know if if that's the case then it's going really badly for BYU like if they go to McKay hillstead yeah yeah but if again this is kind of How It's laid out BYU schedule is start strong get to get brutalized in the middle and that's maybe when you do make the switch if one of let's say one of their top two gets hurt because quarterbacks get hurt in college football and you go to Bannon or you go to Red slap as the backup purely out of uh injury concerns and they don't move the ball they are getting 200 yards of offense against these better teams then yeah that's when you will see McKay hillstead because they'll say well we got to try something different we just got to try something different we see that a lot in college football we just have to try something different all right stay tuned wrapping things up here at Peach coming up next 975 the KSL Sports Zone your home for the best college football coverage in Utah is on the KSL Sports song it's a Thursday night opener for the youths as they welcome in southern Utah to rackle Stadium your home for the best coverage of Utah football is right here on 975 the KSL Sports Zone this is we uh get up out of here what uh what is the proper role what do what do they call it the Wag the wife and girlfriend what what is the the proper supportive role for your professional athlete wife or girlfriend like as far as going to the game no like well let me let me give you the example you're familiar I know you're a big gymnastics person but Livy uh Dune okay dun what's her name sure you know what I'm talking about went to LSU okay National Champion I do yeah I do I honestly do know who you're talking about and uh she's dating a a pitcher who's quite good Paul SK uhuh and he pitches the best pitcher in baseball right right out of the gate and pitches for the lowly Pirates yeah which are terrible so he uh left the game the other day with a 10-3 lead so most assuredly a win a win not for the pirates pirates the bullpen blew it who blew it yeah they they blew the lead he doesn't get the win you know yeah important things so Livy tweeted out a meme that said you got to be kidding me yeah so really frustrated with her boyfriend or whatever partner live in gelle after the Super Bowl said Tom can't throw and catch the ball himself yeah yeah yeah like it is uh is Livy out of line here well I know you've been watching hard KN just like I have been glued to hard KNX and can't miss an episode not the case uh Simone biles is married to Jonathan Owens who plays for the Bears so she's been a focus of Hard Knock as well well she was sitting Sidelines at a Bears game wearing whose coat a coat for which football team if you were the Bears if you were a Bears fan the Bears how about Green Bay Packers that's weird well he used to play for the Packers was where he started so she has Packers gear still she's got to update that so this trillionaire athlete Chicago
