again be back with you guys on another edition of the show as we are 27 days away from opening night ET to lanan days away from from opening night as we are just prepping for the season to start we are a week away from media day so less than 168 hours away but who is counting uh those hours apparently I am here but but on today's show we are going to discuss Roberto wo being a champion again in another in in hockey but not a but not included but something in addition to the Stanley Cup we're going to talk about Sam Reinhardt being the Panthers representative for the North American Players Tour and we're going to rank the offseason story lines 5 to one in the final two segments and here to do that with me it is Wednesday which means today is a Winan's Wednesday edition of the show Jacob winens is back here Jacob welcome back my friend yeah thanks for having me um it's unfortunate but it's also exciting that the summer of Champions is winding down um but that means hockey are right around the corner we're uh we're almost at the season I'm excited but uh Jacob like I said on I did say this on yesterday's show because we do live in Florida and we don't experience seasons summer of Champions extends even into into September and October so we can have an extended summer of Champions here for for the Panthers here I like it yeah but uh let's discuss some of something a great story that we heard uh just a few just in the last 24 to 48 hours for for rerto wongo Hall of Fame golden that we ow so love uh here in South Florida franchise Legend so there was an ad on Facebook of of a champ of a beer league championship of a team that needed a goenda league uh for five straight years and who comes into the locker room for the team to as their goenda long Longo and the team that he played for played for def uh won by a score of 4-2 and they they won won their Championship uh their beer league championship so when you heard that story I laughed a little bit it but but I also I was also I I was also for for this one I'm just like man it's great to see also him back on the ice even if it's like in a in a casual setting like beer league yeah I feel like he got a taste of winning the Stanley Cup and now he's a addicted to winning again in hockey um I thought it was awesome um it's cool to see him Embrace his new uh his his old man role um but also on the flip side of that being on the other team that has to suck when you're you're going into the championship game and then you see uh Hall of Fame goenda long Longo going up against you um that'd be pretty deflating for me but uh whoever scored those two goals on them they've got a story that they can tell for the rest of their life uh scored two goals on on Bobby L that's that's pretty epic but um I I thought it was awesome uh super cool and and we know uh Lou likes to be involved in the community uh very downto earth guy um had to be pretty pretty surreal to see him uh walk in the locker room in full gear when they were getting ready to play um definitely made memories for a lot of those guys and that's what hockey's all about so I thought it was cool um I'd love to see how many how many saves he had the the goals against average giving up goals in Beer League um not terrible but but this is this is Longo we're talking about I expected a shut out and the Tweet of the night for for this one was from our our our friend Francisco aorta of Florida Panthers history saying it took the it took a panther to get a Leafs the Leafs a championship as the as the team is was the beer beer league Leafs uh there for for them so tweet of the night there from Francisco aorta our friend there but another story from from the last 24 to 48 hours is we knew that the North American Players tour for for the NHL was going on in Vegas but we didn't know who the representative was until until just the last day it's funny because we even spoke about on yesterday's show about Sam Reinhardt throwing the first pitch last year and the whole off season for for the Panthers and momentum and everything and what was asked for Rod when he threw out the first pitch at the Marlins game but now for Sam Reinhardt different different going in and I'm sure the play the his peers around him him walking into the into the room even though he's not really about himself doesn't really talk a lot about himself it's just that I can only imagine not only the vibe going in but saying hey here's a Stanley Cup champion walking into into the room with all all of his other peers but also one real one one statement that really Sam Reinhardt made in the article that was written by Emily Benjamin is is really about the the drive for the team once again and it and one thing that Rhino spoke mostly about is is having to learn on the Fly because this is something that this team has never and a lot of these guys outside of Carter Veri and Vladimir tereno even though tereno is no longer with the team it it's something that they've never gone through before at this level so like I said yesterday it's human nature to to not necessarily take your foot off the gas but knowing that you've accomplished something and for the the team that they know that for going into an offseason that they are going to be the hunted this is something so different for them uh so it's something that they they'd have to learn and once again for the schedule I love that they're starting on the road as the Champs coming to town for for and getting the challenge early so that they don't they're that this team this group isn't complacent oh I absolutely agree um I think uh a road trip early in the season um or several road trips early in the season uh one it helps build chemistry right off the bat and there are going to be some new faces a lot of new faces the entire bottom six almost uh is is going to be different combinations that we haven't seen um and and honestly a chance for the same thing in the top six if Matthew Samons kavage gets top six minutes that's going to be uh brand new the bottom six has um no Shack Greer uh boquist like all these new guys and then uh the defense has got a lot of new guys too so having that that road trip time for these guys to bond build chemistry uh get to know each other better um that's going to go a long way later in the season and as we know uh early Road games mean late home games and uh when when the Panthers start to have their their home stands and and long periods of time and sunrise by that point they should be a well oiled machine and that's when you can really uh stack some points in the bank um and and gear up towards the playoffs but definitely not going to be an easy Road by any means and they are going to have to to have that hunger level because not only are they are the Panthers the defending champs but they're also um really really uh I don't know how to say this without sounding drastic but they're a hated team um they're not the same as just uh any any regular Champion that that comes to town you want to dethrown the champion they're team that rubs a lot of people the wrong way with their style of play uh the Panthers make a lot of enemies with the way they play the game uh so so there's always going to be extra juice from other teams um trying to trying to knock them off their high horse and and get physical with them and and that's that's that comes with the territory that's the panther style um but if they don't have that hunger level early they're going to be in some trouble so they're gonna uh I I I have no doubt that they're going to come out firing they're going to have that um but it's going to be absolutely necessary because they they are a hated team in the league yeah and let's not forget that they were Darlings just two years ago but y but being a darling doesn't necessarily mean winning for for them and when you win you become hated hated for sure in in in the league just as the Pittsburgh Penguins Tampa Bay Lightning everyone so it's it's definitely they they are on everybody's radar coming into this season for for sure but we're going to transition over to segment number two where we are going to start ranking our offseason storylines that we've discussed all summer and now putting them five to one we are going to discuss this and more next here on the lock on Florida Panthers podcast team in the league available on YouTube or wherever you get your podcast part of the lockon podcast Network your team every day so uh we like we said at the top we've discussed all of the storylines for the Florida Panthers throughout the offseason a lot of episodes worth of it hours and hours of conversations not just on wi's Wednesdays and just all throughout but now it's time to put them in the r in the rankings as once again we are a week away from media day and honestly we can finally see and and live hockey and see if our our worries are were valid or not too that's the that's the great thing about just the conversation just how teams look on paper uh and and the truth is like like every every Sports League you don't win a championship on paper so we are we are going to start with some of our number five on our offseason storyline so I'm going to give you the floor first Jacob uh and of your fifth biggest storyline for the Florida Panthers going into 2024 25 yeah my uh my number five um I'm gonna go with the development of macki samis kevich um I I think I think that's a really really big storyline to watch as we head into Camp um the Panthers have a hole right now uh at rightwing and and they had it last year for for stretches um and that was really solved by trading for Vladimir tereno at the deadline so it's a situation where the Panthers are not unfamiliar but they would prefer to have a guy who can who can fill that that right-wing spot whether it's first line or third line um who can fill that spot put up offensive production not be uh a huge detriment defensively and at least get them uh production to the trade deadline when they can add another uh deadline forward which would likely be the plan again this year so for me that that's that's Macky I think he's got the best chance um we have to hope he's had a big offseason and is ready to to make the next step um to being a full-time NHL player he was great in the AHL last year um fantastic offense you'd like to see a little more defensively a little more off the puck uh that comes with with time and experience and just getting his and building his NHL body um but I think it I think Now's the Time uh if he's going to make the jump Now's the Time he's he'd be in a great situation uh so that's my number five story line is the development of Mackey uh he could he's a guy who who if he pans out as a high-end complimentary player uh on on a cheap deal uh coming off his rookie contract he'll get a bridge deal you would presume that can really go a long way towards extending the Panthers Championship window yeah and the and getting some seasoning getting 20 goals in it too while while still looking up at the NHL roster and seeing and for him Mo it being a motivating factor of wanting to be part of that solution for the Panthers and I have that a little bit more up on my list uh too for for the for the Panthers uh number five for but I I once again I do have that higher but number five I have special teams and there's going to be groin pains in this part of in the beginning of the season for the Panthers as we've discussed mostly about who's going to be quarterback in the power play do they go with five forwards everything and we actually had a would you rather segment last week on it if you guys want to go back and listen to that show but I do with power success on the Special Teams at least in the regular season is icing on the cake for if you adding on to the five on five play and just and and even for the Panthers their cory4 at five on five was over 57% a thousand more shot attempts over the course of the Season that averages out to 12 per game over their opponents and even in the postseason in the Boston and the New York series they were over 57% in both of those the only one that where they were under 50 was the Tampa series and and they and but for Tampa their success mostly came on special teams but nothing going on on five on five for for them so if if the if the the reason why it's not higher is because I do believe it's going to develop more and more as the season goes and if there isn't success on special teams early that it shouldn't be something to panic about so I'm going to give you back the floor for number four yep number four for me is uh replacing Montour and stenland um and those I'm going to highlight those two in particular for the reason that you just said and that's special teams Uh Kevin stenland was the Panthers engine on the penalty kill um he he he wasn't flashy didn't put up incredible numbers or anything like that but he's gonna be a really tough guy to replace on the Panthers brought in noek they brought in Greer they brought in boquist guys who can play the penalty kill role um but it's really going to be the faceoffs it's going to be the the board battles the shop blocking can the Panthers replace what Kevin stenin brought to the Penalty kill on that fourth fly because he was the perfect uh prototype fourth line center for the Panthers last year which was an issue that they had previously uh and then Brandon Montour um speaks for speaks for itself on this one he he ran the power play uh the Panther's best offensive defenseman uh absolute minute muncher um he's and and him departing uh going to Seattle that it wasn't any it was not any indictment on him it was just he played so well that that his his contract was just too much for the Panthers to afford so um it's a casualty of winning uh guys uh outplay their uh their price tag and they they uh grow their value and end up leaving and that's that's what happens to winning teams so can the Panthers replace him um guy who's probably got the driver seat first in line to get get the chance to do that is going to be Adam BWI with um who was a late signing but I think Adam boquist has the potential and the tools to do it uh and and that's going to bring up some really interesting Camp battles on defense because uh the second they signed Adam boquist now you've got you got one too many uh defensemen uh to roster on the NHL roster so uh guys like balinskis guys like Bjorn foot they're they're gonna have to really really fight and contend to keep a spot on the on the roster which is good but at the same time um it's something it's definitely something to watch H you don't want to lose assets for nothing through the W the waiver wire or anything like that but um that's that's the way it goes in preseason we'll see who who earns the spot yeah to add on to you for uh for the PK of denial Zone entries too for and to and how much time you can waste on on the penalty kill like when when you get a clear of 10 15 seconds and get your proper changes too so that you're not although you do have to be more on your toes while on the penalty kill uh th those are very important factors into into a successful kill for for the for the Panthers there which they were outstanding with last season but number four I'm going to go a little bit with some of the players that you mentioned and mine is continuity of players who spent a good amount of time with the team last year and I'm talk and you spoke about balinskis you took spoke about uh bjf fooot but I also want to add the guys like jonovich there too these are these he was one of uh forsing was a big uh big storyline when he did get extended during the trade deadline but it put Jonah gajic a little bit uh under under the under the radar which which for gajovic I remember just talking about this with Nick on on an addition of Fairbanks Friday is maybe he's the biggest dark course for the Panthers and how he's going to develop too we've seen mid-season extensions like lomberg uh too with with the Panthers uh there too and Josh mahura is was another one that we saw mid-season extension from just a few years ago too even though he's no longer at the team but what what what are the continuity of those players having a year under the under their belt if they do get more minutes what they're going to what they're going to look like for for now getting another year being with the team for a good amount of time even though balinskis went down a little later uh when when they they were starting to get healthy too uh so that's another another for for the continuity of of that so number three for you uh Jacob number three uh this one might be a little bit low um I feel like if you if you touch on it it'll be higher on your list but number three for me is the development of Spencer Knight um him making the jump potentially to being the full-time backup um that's that's something to watch uh given given the uh the past year and a half uh of hockey that that Spencer Knight has gone through um the the mental health battle and and the time in the player assistance program coming back starting in the AHL I really struggled early on picked it up towards the end of the year probably the best goenda down the stretch um looked like he's ready to make it back to the NHL the path is wide open for him now um he'll get some Camp competition from dger uh for sure but his contract demands that he's he's uh he should be on the NHL roster uh he's he's being paid as a as a as a mid as a mid-level um really a mid-level starter uh salary wise in the NHL um and he he'll be asked to be the backup um Bob's getting up there in years it's time now to see what we have in Spencer Knight and see if he's the a parent so that's a big storyline for me we're GNA we're going to see what what Spencer Knight brings to the table as soon as training camp opens no doubt and Spencer Knight is somewhere on that list but he is not at number three for for me uh so number three for me right before we transition over to segment number three the whole eyes on the present and the future for for the Florida Panthers is I remember just going into media Day in 2020 uh3 just uh the focus wanting to have more of that Focus on Charlotte whether Macky does begin the season there or not but also the fact that in the prospect pool for the Panthers a good majority of the guys that they've drafted not in the first round but high with their first pick they're they're not going to be part of the mix uh for for the Panthers yet like the Grayson sain the lenus Ericson Jack dine even though he's a seventh round pick still has is still hasn't signed his ELC he's going to go back to one year of of one more year at Denver Justin sord of played three games in the n in the NHL which the Florida Panthers according to lockdown NHL prospects have the 29th ranked uh Prospect pool in the NHL so it's really about what they're going to do down there in order to in order to just keep an eye on on that and and to also build like you said those cheap contracts for uh uh for macki sasevich being part of the mix for uh the the Panthers and getting and which he does have top six potential for for for for the Panthers and we even spoke about how we want to see him start off the season with Alexander barov on that right wing but also the Panthers will give themselves an opportunity to uh trade for for a guy at the deadline just depending how how it how it goes uh throughout the throughout the first 50 plus games of of the year but we're going to transition over to segment number three where we are going to continue our number two and number one biggest storylines for the Florida Panthers heading into the 2024 25 season we'll discuss that next here on the lock on Florida Panthers podcast today's episode is brought to you by indeed and September 11th edition of the lockon Florida Panthers podcast thank you once again for making the lockon Florida Panthers podcast your first listen of the day uh and continuing our rankings for our offseason storylines here for the Florida Panthers and I'm going to give you number two uh Jacob what is your second biggest storyline for the Panthers going into this season yep my second biggest storyline uh this I was debating whether this is going to be number two or number one but um my number two is uh who who stays and who goes um the Panthers have some contracts coming up uh and and there's gon to have to be some decisions made on several players on this roster who who's going to get an extension who's going to be too expensive to keep uh you think ver hay uh you think Sam Bennett you think Aaron eblad uh those are the notables um and then will there be trades to accommodate contracts for guys that they want to extend and prioritize and then when you talk about that you talk about guys like Evan Rodriguez um Ed to leran guys who make those midlevel salaries that you might need to clear that space to keep the core together so um that's a big that's a big storyline to watch um especially when it comes to Veri and Bennett in particular um the forward Market is it's it could be unkind to the Panthers um when if you let this get to free agencies so for me that's that's number two storyline and I think I think Verge probably is the biggest priority as far as who you want to extend but the price tag matters and we'll we'll see if the Panthers can make that happen um but that's that's a big storyline and and I think going into this season you don't want to have a whole lot of uncertainty there um you definitely don't want that Weighing on on players Minds as we get going in the season because there's going to be like we said that that hunger level needs to be high and you can't have contract as a distraction so uh we'll see what happens that is also my number two for the biggest storyline and the way I wrote it on my Google doc is how the Panthers navigate upcoming ufas for for the Panthers and and what and how and how they navigate through that because they will get weaker on paper eventually nature of a salary cap too for for them too and and crazy how you didn't mention uh niika and and I think that's valid that you didn't mention him because of what he with 2.5 million and then him being being part of that of the leaders in Block shots and battling along the boards too I think and which we discussed on another edition of Fairbanks fright a few weeks ago is who whose jobs are the safest Nico Niko mikola in my opinion uh once again is a is a player for the Panthers whose job is Extreme ex safe because it's just it's just a very easy contract to keep on your books and for what he brings to the table there's a lot of value for him and I I I like to see what J fresh hockey has as a has as his actual value for what he brings to the table as far as closing gaps and winning those uh board battles for for for the Panthers but the upcoming guys for for for the Panthers of who they prioritize to I'm not and I'm not going to repeat your points that uh you just made just now since we have the exact one but number one for you who what is your number one biggest storyline for the Panthers yeah my number one biggest storyline is um it's tough for me to even put a name on this one but uh you could you could refer to it as the hunger level you could refer to it as the the Target on their back um I'm just I'm really anxious to see how the Panthers respond to being in the position they're in um and do they have it in them mentally more than physically and more than than skill-wise uh to do this again if you think back over the last three years they've done everything you could possibly do um as a team and as an organization they won a president's trophy they won the Eastern Conference got to the Stanley Cup and and lost they get back to the to the Stanley Cup and win uh and finally finally win the Ultimate Prize and they did it in a variety of ways they were president's Trophy winner they were the eight seed barely get in as a wild card uh they won the Atlantic division this year so they they they get in as an Atlantic Division champion they their closet full of Hardware is completely full from the last three seasons what motivates you now uh that's that's the biggest storyline that that I'm looking at um going into this year and I don't expect any of these guys to uh to not take it as seriously I don't expect anyone to to lack hunger or lack drive but um just naturally as as humans and as athletes uh when you've accomplished everything you can accomplish it you have to it can be tough sometimes and there's that we call it the the championship hangover be tough to to find that uh internal motivation to match the hungry level of the people who haven't won What You've Won uh that's that's a big storyline for me to watch this year is uh how do the Panthers respond to to climbing the mountain and winning everything they could possibly win in the last three years um Can can they find it in them to to add to it yeah and just based on the leadership uh in the locker room I it's the mentality is just never never be satisfied for even if you have been there before and we we always talk about act like you've been there the Panthers thankfully are going to act like it because they have uh too even and they were they had that mentality even prior to to even raising Lord Stanley's cup there but number one storyline for me uh is is Spencer night and Sergey barosi the tandem for the is it going to be a 50 30ish split for for for them somewhere along those lines the camp competition for for the for the second goal tender spot for for the for the Panthers for for them going into into into the season so what and Bob he doesn't have to worry about his his his job he even though like like we spoke about earlier about about Sam Reinhardt not really talking about himself Bob is is that type of person that won't be faas he has that quiet confidence about him so but also really about that the fact that for for the Panthers they they realize that even though they dominate possession and have a lot of shot shot suppression the number one factor into winning a Stanley Cup is goenda just like quarterback play in the NFL that you need to have that backbone for for for the Panthers and can Spencer Knight show at least a little progress uh because uh I because you got to see what you have and like I'm not saying Spencer Knight will start a majority of playoff games if they make it uh if they make it this year Well when they make it excuse me um but as soon as next year you're going to have to see maybe that passing of the torch for for the for the goal tending department but you have to see a little bit of signs of progress this year for for for them so that is the number one storyline that I'm looking forward to as as we are once again a week away from media day but before we wrap up this edition of the show we are we have a little bit of off the ice uh news for what is going on in the growth of hockey and I want to give you the floor for a little bit of what you you know uh Jacob on what what is going on in the State of Florida not only the State of Florida but outside of the state yeah so um really cool project that many people know about um uh it's funny you said off the ice because I guess technically it is off the ice and on the synthetic ice um the uh the Anthony duclair Foundation is finalizing construction right now of uh their first ever synthetic ice drink at Boy Anderson High School if you recall earlier in the year they broke ground on that um even though and and it's very cool because even though Anthony declair no longer plays for the Panthers he's still extremely active in the community uh runs his camps down here um and and is actively working um as they finish up this ranking Boyd Anderson but um I I recently in the past week and a half um found out from some uh several people within the foundation that they do have some pretty pretty awesome expansion plans um to build several more of these synthetic ice rinks across uh South Florida and and across the state as a whole and even uh up into Canada and out in the west coast um which is very cool one of the one of the perks of the fact that Anthony declair has played for so many teams in so many different markets is that he's able to leave his footprint in so many of them uh and and him playing for Tampa for example is a blessing in disguise because uh now he's he's able to leave a footprint across the entire State um and and the goal is for the foundation to have some several of these ranks pop up um so that's that's what they're uh that's what they're currently working on the the Boyd Anderson rink is opening soon um definitely in before the end of the year the goal is for it to be in the next month um but I I highly encourage anyone who who is serious about the growth of hockey in Florida um just find ways to get involved um I'll definitely be over the next few weeks sharing links and and um posts and things like that to make to get the awareness out there and give people an opportunity to get involved whether it's volunteering whether it's donating whether it's fundraising uh even just liking and sharing helps helps a lot but um I I feel like it is kind of our responsibility here in South Florida as as a fans of the sport and we've been talking about it for so long about the growth of the game um it's one of a kind these synthetic ice rinks they're they're inexpensive the ice time uh to to get in an actual rink is extremely expensive and it's C prohibitive for a lot of uh young people who who normally would love to play hockey but just can't afford to and these synthetic ice strengths offer a offer a solution uh to that problem and and give them their entryway into hockey so uh we talk about it a lot um the what we'd like to see happen in Florida and the continued growth of the game and getting more people uh getting more people involved especially from communities that normally wouldn't be exposed to hockey or get a chance to play uh and you never know the the next the next great talent could could come from a synthetic ice rink at Boy Anderson High School you never know so um yeah just excited to share that that they have they have grand expansion plans um and yeah I will definitely be uh active on social media over the next little bit uh sharing ways that we can as a as a South Florida fan base and as Panthers fans support Duke uh and his foundation and making sure we do our part to help grow the game here so I really do appreciate you giving me some time to share that with everybody yep and after breaking ground in February which we spoke about it then and Alex bomgardner of five reason Sports was also present there to uh ask some questions there and and after seven months of after breaking ground it is almost ready uh and now expanding and just continuing growth of the game and Boyd Anderson around the area as we spoke about a very underprivileged community so that is a big factor into why that location is a part of of it when it comes to when it comes to choosing that location and hopefully we see more growth o um over and over again for for this sport that we love so much and we have we you and I have a voice here uh and that's what then that's what we're trying to do we're trying to spread the word on just the growth and and I feel as if it's uh my duty to do so and Jacob I want to thank you so much uh for for sharing that uh but as we wrap up the show uh U I can't wait to see what you share uh by the way uh but if people want to follow that and see what you have to share tell everybody where they can follow you yep definitely you can follow me on X Jacob wi8 and yes like you said I will definitely be following up with uh with news with uh expansion plans with uh opening dates everything everything there is to share as this project keeps rolling uh will definitely be active in in making sure the the south Florida Community uh is aware and gets to get out there and experience it for themselves and uh yeah just just giving everybody a chance to do their part and help grow this this sport down here uh it's been an awesome summer awesome man thank you so much and I will see you next week my friend looking forward to it and if you like what you're hearing please
