2024 Texas Football Schedule Preview (GAME-BY-GAME ANALYSIS)

Chris Lee and Chase Robinson of South Eastern 14 here to talk about Texas's football schedule and yes this will soon be Southeastern 16 because the Longhorns make their SEC debut along with Oklahoma what should be an interesting season Texas made the college football playoff last year certainly a huge favorite to make the expanded playoff this year and Chase a schedule that while no SEC schedule is ever easy you compare it to some of other teams in League which we've been doing and the Longhorns get one of the more favorable slates we'll talk about that in a moment but first of all reminder an informal power pole of the 134 FBS teams 134 now at kesa state is joining the frey here and Texas has only got four games against top 15 teams according to this power pole and what I've done is I've averaged Athlon Lindy's Phil steel fpi and SP plus to get that that is lower than a lower number than most teams play in the top 15 uh and then outside that if we go down to the top 35 Texas only has six of the top 35 teams so I have to schedule outside that top 35 again not saying it's an easy schedule but you start compare it to some other teams in fact Florida's got what like eight games in top inside the top 18 so when we say comparatively easier I think Texas is going to have one of the two or three easiest slates in the SEC yeah they do and I think that'll help them as they as they look towards getting back to that college football playoff um but yeah I think uh it's a good schedule for them starting off in the SEC um they're you know they what I find interesting just looking at their schedule they get their four non-conference games done right off the bat in their first four games and so uh they'll have a long stretch of SEC play which I find very interesting yeah one one of those tough games is coming up pretty quickly too in Michigan uh Texas will get Colorado State in week one that will be in Austin kickoff time for that one will will be 230 Central you can catch that on ESPN the Rams expected to be probably a bottom half of the FBS team in fact I see them ranked um 92 in this little thing I put together which would put them below the lowest SEC team which is vanderbolten date with defending national champion Michigan on September the 7th 11 Central in what will easily be one of the more eagerly anticipated games of the regular season Chase yeah you know you you think back to last year Texas had or the last two years Texas had has had Alabama there in that week two spot well they have Michigan there now the defending national champ and and Texas Michigan obviously both in the college football playoff was Texas losing to Washington Michigan meting Alabama and eventually winning the national championship so this is the first uh trip actually for Texas to the big house and the first time these uh two teams have met in the regular season which I found uh interesting uh but but one stat here that I that I find cool as I was researching this game Texas has won their last seven true Road games including that that game Alabama last year so uh and and last year proved to to be well for them you know uh in the fact that uh that they were able to win on the road I think that continues this year I think this should be a really fun game but I think you know there's a lot to ask about Michigan are they the same kind of team uh as they were last year I don't think so I think this a winnable game for the Longhorns on the road yeah Michigan and the power pole that I'm putting together is is ranked ninth in that so expected to be a playoff Contender but maybe not the dominant outfit that we saw a year ago all right next up UTSA and look for a mid mid major is not really a word football but for a a uh group of five game that's that's the term I'm looking for not not an easy one UTSA ranked around the mid-50s in this little power pole that I put together but still Texas should be a game that the Longhorns could handle given the expectations and the talent on hand this one will take place on ESPN and it'll be a six Central kickoff yeah you know this uh this match up here they they've only played one other time in Texas won that one back in 2022 41 to2 and Texas has won 48 straight games against a group of five uh teams and so um I'm I you know again this is a an instate game you know UTSA um you know in American Conference is going to be trying to get something going learning about their team at this point but you know I think this is um again Texas getting their non-conference games out of the way this is another game to tune up for what what uh will be uh a a tough SEC slate coming up in a few weeks yeah Texas one of the few teams that does not play an FCS opponent it gets its easiest FBS team coming up on the 21st Louisiana Monroe which is in the power pole I put together ranked 133 of 134 that game will kick off Seven Central on September the 21st in Austin of course yeah again another game um you've got three your first four games at at home this is another home game um you know again your your last nonconference game I think this is a good tuneup though for uh for what's to come the following week he gets to Mississippi State but yeah I think um you know you if you're Texas you're really gearing up for September 28th because this is going to be the first SEC game of the season and it's against a team in Mississippi State who you know we know there's a lot of questions about there's a lot of unknowns a third coach in as many years uh and Jeff Levy taking over so um you know first SEC game you want to make a good impression I think Texas definitely has a chance to make a a good impression on September the 28th in their their first SEC game yeah and Mississippi state will be undergoing a rebuild with Jeff lebby a lot of guys gone uh still just kind of reeling from the aftermath of Mike leech's passing a couple years ago in fact I've even seen Phil steel has got Mississippi State and his power rankings nationally a little worse than Vanderbilt but uh the the Aggies get the the lower portion of the SEC slate in terms of where I'm seeing these teams ranked and stay expected by most people uh to be 15 of 16 in the SEC all right you get a by week which comes at a good time next because next up in that the Red River rivalry at the Cotton Bowl Texas and Oklahoma meet for the first time as both being SEC members in this case yeah adding another great rivalry to the conference which I'm really excited about and yeah I think the off week comes at a good time because the next two games you have your rivalry against Oklahoma and then you've got Georgia so um you know I I think this this has been such a fun game you know last year even the year Texas made the college football playoff Oklahoma won that game and so I I think this is one of those games where anything can happen you know it's a neutral sight game as they play there in Dallas and so I'm super excited to have this as an SEC game uh these are going to be two really good teams Oklahoma they want to try to find a spot in the college football playoff and to do that they've got to beat a team like Texas who will will uh probably be in there so I'm excited about this one this is going to be it's always fun it's always physical uh but to have Oklahoma and Georgia back to back I think is a it's a it's tough two games uh for the Texas Longhorns to have to bounce back after your big rivalry game and then take on who a lot of people think will be number one and could very well be number one in the country when you play them at this point uh again that's a tough two- game stretch but I am uh I am so excited about this Georgia Texas game not only am I excited about the uh the Red River rivalry being SEC but to have Texas and Georgia play uh again two teams who might play for an SEC Championship Mike play a you know in a playoff game you know this to have this as a regular season game is uh man that is so exciting you know we mentioned that Texas gets the one of the easier SEC slates but on the other side of this Chase if you start making a list of maybe best 10 games in the country that you want to see and and of course part of this is Texas being Texas you get a lot of lot of Texas representation in this I mean Texas Georgia by just how good the teams are is going to be one of the best five regular season games in the country you know we already went through the Michigan game that's going to be one of the best non-conference matchups we'll see at any point the Oklahoma game Oklahoma's probably a playoff Contender uh again you've got the Rivalry aspect and and then you know we'll get to another rivalry game late in the season but I I I think this part of the schedule W with Oklahoma and Georgia here going to be a a lot of fun and a lot of games are going to be appointment te TV for college football fans all right next the Longhorns start to get a little bit of a break a road trip to Vanderbilt in which I I think we'll probably see more Texas fans in that Stadium than Vanderbilt fans it is undergoing a rebuild there'll be at 30,000 seats so it could be a little bit of a an expensive ticket for the game fact I'm already seeing prices over $100 for this one online and then a a literal by week the next week for the Longhorns uh followed by after that by week November 9th Florida that will be in Austin and we have talked about Florida and Billy Napier being on the hot seat coming into the season the schedule just brutal but this is a Florida team that I think is getting slept on a little bit in terms of the talent amidst the talk of all those other things yeah you know and and uh interesting note about the Texas Vandy game this is the first time Texas has played Game in Nashville since 1925 I thought that was interesting obviously these two teams have not been the same conference they hadn't played but uh it's been a long time since Texas has come to Nashville Tennessee uh but yeah the the Vandy Florida uh and then Arkansas stretch you know um it's interesting because obviously we're not really sure where Florida Arkansas really and vable to will be at this point of the season um you know what what's their mindset you know they very well could be playing with a chip on their shoulder especially Florida and Arkansas at this point of the year so they're catching them at an interesting time where it's kind of hard to gauge what these games could be like yeah you you're getting to the the coaching Hot Seat portion potentially of the Longhorn schedule because I think if Clark Lee doesn't have a respectable year maybe a chance F he makes a change we've talked about Billy Napier and then you've got Arkansas on the 16th of course Sam Pitman has been on the hot seat since before the end of last year but back back to that Vandy game for just a minute if you want to win a Barb with somebody Vander but leads that alltime series and I think it's 83 and one I'd have to look that up but uh if you want to win a surprise bet with somebody somewhere that's that's a little one that you could have in your back pocket but yeah the the SE excuse me the November 16th game with Arkansas renewing an old Southwestern conference rivalry that one will be in fville and that'll be an 11 o'clock kickoff Central Time on the 16th yeah you know that's a a lot of Arkansas fans you probably the older fans you know remember that this was a big rivalry you know and and will we see it become a rivalry um you know in in this day and age who knows you know that that's hard to tell but uh you know we we've seen this um this is a rival in the past you know they played a couple of years ago Arkansas won that game you know in fville um but you know this is uh two very different teams right now as we're looking at yeah that that 2021 game I'd almost forgotten that that that seems forever ago um these programs both in much much different places than when they played in 2021 with Arkansas winning Arkansas actually the meeting before that was 2014 the Razer won that one in Houston by 3174 so Houston excuse me Texas's last win in the series actually came in 2008 in Austin that was the third meeting ago that these teams played in okay next up Kentucky uh could be a an interesting game Kentucky matches up uh weirdly with some teams like you've seen Kentucky kind of give Georgia some some fits at times and ky's got some Playmakers on offense I I think this is a game that I would ask absolutely pick Texas to win but but might be a little oh sneakily tough I guess would be a good way to put it yeah this Kentucky Texas matchup is one that we have not seen a ton of at all you know I think they've only played one time uh the yeah in 1951 is the last time Texas and Kentucky played so uh you know this could be a interesting game uh we'll see what Kentucky offense is like I think they're going to be much better Brock Vandergriff obviously leading a quarterback I think their offensive line is going to take a step up uh this year as well to help Vandergriff out so you know we'll see where kck's at but you know at this point I think Texas is gonna have their eye on the prize of a college football playoff bid and and trying to go all the way and so they're they're going to be focused and and ready to go plus you got a big one coming up the week after this Kentucky matchup yeah Chase who would who would most love to get in the way of Texas and a college football playoff birth yeah I you think of anybody I think the Aggies are just chomping at the bit for November 30th of 2024 um they get this game in College Station uh if you haven't kept up with things there's some things been going on in the Baseball World involving these two teams which I think will just escalate this rivalry in all sports um but this is two teams they haven't played in a long time used to be conference Rivals um the Rivalry is being Ned now that they're in the SEC and you think Texas Oklahoma's fun you think uh you know Alabama Auburn is a great rivalry I think you know this is right up there with that you know and and I think this is one of those games where anything can happen Mike ELO and his Bunch Are Gonna Be Ready To Roll November 30th trust me and the Angie Faithful is g to be rocking Kyle Field I can assure you uh for this game so you know and and you mentioned it I mean no one would want to spoil Texas's chances at a playoff more than Texas A&M and they're going to be looking to do that on November the 30th yeah in interesting timing we're recording this video two days after Texas took Texas indan baseball coach Jim slash Nel so the the uh the Texas Texas of rivalry certainly been fresh on our brains as we've done this one Chase yes it has and uh again it just it makes me more excited for this matchup uh to to be renewed and and uh this this will make for a really fun day of football if you have this uh really a fun weekend of football you know they they play some games on Thanksgiving and Friday but this matchup the iron balll the Egg Bowl I mean there are some uh some really fun SEC rivalries that we're going to get to experience all in one weekend yeah and don't worry longard fans you're you will be added to the display behind me you're penned it is purchased it is ready to go uh we just have got to change the configuration a good bit we're too busy with work right now um I'm gonna blame Texas I would have I would have already had this thing done but the little Kur fuffle
