every single weekday it's our third season here at lock on Angels we're having a lot of fun uh because we get to podcast together it's a lot of fun hey on today's show does this team need Mike Trout or should I say does this team need Mike Trout we'll talk about what that means coming up and also who should replace demmer's in the starting rotation we're going to talk about the situation there what that looks like Mike before we recap the game I got two words for you okay not DX don't worry standing desk look at this I can move around I'm gonna get way more animated on the show you're gonna talk a whole lot longer now this is going to be a longer than a 30 minute podcast right why don't you get us started with a recap Angels won this one two to one Mike yeah uh Angels faced a knuckle Baller in this one Johnny Matt Waldren and every time I saw his name I kept thinking about Jordan Walden because remember Jordan Walden man that guy was good for like a hot second and then he was gone uh he he led uh this this this team in a lot of like funky flyy outs like when he was throwing that uh that knuckle ball yeah it really brought about a lot of funky swings and a lot of fly balls they're not sure where they're going the catcher behind him was struggling but it was a wicked wicked knuckle ball in fact I loved the the slowmo I believe you retweeted it locked on Angels the slowmo of that ball barely moving just barely moving floating out there I I love the knuckle ball I I would love more pitchers to use the knuckle ball because I think that there's a lot of success that you can have with it yeah it's a it really depends on can you make it to the majors with your knuckle ball and Matt Waldren is somebody who was able to do that Mike of course he's had struggles in the first inning but they said this is the uh only the second C inning he's had all season it was against the angels of course and I was a little concerned because Manny Machado got a home run in the first off Tyler Anderson but you know it was funny later on in the game he did pop out but they also intentionally walked him twice after that because Machado was coming up in very crucial situations with Runners on and so they smartly put him on first base and it worked out for the Angels every single time the Angels were able to get one back in the fourth inning after Luis rifo got a hit stole second Mike and he got into scoring position and then Calhoun was able to get him to come home and score so that's where the offense began for the angels and of course we'll talk about how they were able to win it here in a second Mike shout out to Taylor Ward yeah and Zack Netto Mike they had two incredible plays Taylor Ward got two Outfield assists here's the thing he just needs to throw it to Zack Netto every single time right because when he does good things happen they combined for two great plays one of them was getting hang Kim out at third when he tried to stretch a double into a triple now Taylor Ward kind of struggled with the wall out there the ball bounced around a little bit but he was able to get it into Zack Netto they threw Hassan Kim out at third and that was a huge play and then they were able to get jerks and profar out at home later on in the game same thing Taylor Ward gets the ball relays it to Zack Netto they throw profar out at home so it was great to see some great defense also zetto got Hassan Kim out um from the grass The Outfield grass over a short stop and he threw that thing a mile to get Hassan Kim out at first so some really great defense Mike it was one of those games that we talked about yesterday where the angels have to play Perfect baseball and in those situations anything could have gone wrong Taylor Ward you know letting that thing Plinko out there in the corner of the of the wall in the stadium but he was able to smartly get it in to Zack Netto who threw out again Hassan Kim at third and profar at home so it was it was very smart and maybe they heard our conversation about baseball IQ yesterday but the fact is they played really clean baseball last night and I think that's honestly why it led to a win in addition to Tyler Anderson's great start right yeah you said smart three times Johnny already on the show and I it's because I got a standing desk I find it interesting though after our discussion yesterday and we talked about boneheaded plays yeah this team looked like a smart team last night right they did everything right and they have these games that show up every once in a while and if they could do this more often we would see them get some more wins right you you put it perfectly yesterday between a one and a 10 where one is terrible and 10 is perfect perfect baseball there are five yeah and sometimes we get five and above and sometimes we get five and below um not Five Below not the discount store the we get five and above and five and below and and you're right Mike it's every now and then we get flashes of like yeah hey that's a pretty good team out there right they showed last night what they have the potential to do with a good starting pitcher and they've had some good starting pitching outside of retur over the last couple of weeks right and even even throwing in sandal which by the way is why sandal wasn't optioned wasn't removed because Sandoval has been taking strides and getting better deur has not we'll talk about that in the second segment but Tyler Anderson continues to just be incredible John six and two thirds last night five hits one run three walks two KS 91 pitches he has thrown five in he he was through five innings and had just 54 pitches in this game last night pitch efficiency speaking my language pitch efficiency baby we've been talking about that for a really long time but he has really found it John and that that's what's great about Tyler Anderson unfortunately he's our quote unquote Ace of this staff and he shouldn't be the ace right we should have other pitchers then he would be a great piece but he's doing everything that he can to be successful and what I appreciate about Tyler Anderson is he's doing what a veteran on this team needs to do he's keeping the team in the game it's not a blowout he's helping them fight even in the even in the seventh inning I thought wash was going to let him go one more batter but after right after that discussion you could tell that maybe there was some sort of indication that I'm tired and and maybe exhausted or maybe this is this matchup isn't good for me although he did get the next batter a couple of times prior to that at bat but then they brought in Hunter Strickland he got out of the jam in the seventh a high deep Fly ball yeah to to to right center right and and then they the the next the next inning in the eighth inning he did give up a leadoff double but then got three consecutive outs did score the win in this game because of what happened in the eighth inning Johnny yeah in the eighth inning Joe Adell let off with a double and then what was impressive Mike situational hitting I know for as much as I love pitch efficiency I feel like you love situational hit my love language so it was great he got on second and Zack Netto had a sacrific fly that moved to Delta third gor came in to pinch hit for Kiren Paris another sack fly and that moved Adele in or he scored on that sack fly St sack fly was the winning run because Joe Adele hit that double Mike he had an opposite field double that bounced off the wall passed Fernando tatis Jr there might have stretched it into a triple but the fact that he got the double out of it didn't push the issue again smart smart baseball smart Deion making baseb I think that was a key there because neetto and gor did exactly what they were supposed to do Carlos Estes got a save in this one it was a very comfortable save it wasn't nerve-wracking it wasn't ridiculous it wasn't like what are we doing it was just a a great boom boom boom right yeah and so the Angels won this one two to one now this one made me smile because before the game the Angels found out that Joe Adell was named the AL defensive player of the month Mike do you know that he's accumulated seven defensive runs saved wow out there in right field talk about a huge improvement from previous years where you know one of the biggest sticking points for Joe Adell was his Outfield defense and one of the biggest criticisms was his Outfield defense now home run robberies are going to help you get those defensive run saved right and so that's a that's a big part of it but at the same time what an improvement for Joe Adell now I know the strikeouts have crept back up his K rate is back up again something that they're going to need to work on but that double was really inspiring just because he went the opposite way when Joe Adell takes a pitch and goes the opposite way he's got enough power to I thought it was gone I thought it was drifting enough to get over that yellow line but at the same time it was great to see that he got that double out of it going the opposite way and that's exactly what Joe Odell needs to work on and focus on can I say that I'm glad that it wasn't a home run I'm glad it wasn't a home run because they manufactured that run and I love that they manufactured that run because they're going to hit the Home Run that's going to come it's inevitable but the fact that they manufactured a run runner at second nobody out then Netto hits a sacrifice fly moves the runner over Joe adell's really fast on the bases and then gu had a great sack fly deep enough to be able to score the run and to be able to see the fans recognize that the Angels did something I'm gonna say it smart was was good to celebrate last night because we have had moments where they've had flashes like this if that team that we saw last night is the team that we could continue to play over the next few weeks they could really pile up some wins and that's what makes me so frustrated and I think it's what makes makes every dayers frustrated is we see the potential but then there's a one for 32 streak with Joe Adell in 15 case right we see the potential but then there's a missed sack bunt or you're not moving a runner over or second and third nobody out and you don't score those are so frustrating right so last night was one of those games where we're like see see we knew you could do it right got a lot of faith in you I love that I love that hey the uh uh the angels are playing the Padre's again 6:38 Pacific time of every pitch of the Angels Hometown broadcast on SiriusXM of the app all you got to do is search Angels well after Reed demmer's last start he was optioned to AAA and so because he's in AAA there's been a lot of discussion about what the angels are going to do now we're going to give you some names of potential guys that could slot into the starting rotation for Reed Detmer but it sounds like perhaps he could get a couple of starts and then be called back up for his regular spot in the rotation around June 15th my opinion is I think you keep him down there for a little long longer in fact I said on yesterday's show he keep him down until September because he looks lost he looks scared that might be too much but I think that you got to give him some time to really figure out some things because he's really been struggling so here are some names of some potential Replacements some guys that could fill in for Reed detmers the first Johnny is of course Chase silth who was on the iil was injured Jeff Fletcher tweeted that Sila threw three Innings on Friday so he would need maybe at least two more minor League outings to be ready to go his next start in the miners is scheduled for Thursday which would make it really tough for him to line up for the 15th which is when the Angels could potentially need that extra starter that fifth starter against San Francisco wash said they're just going to go with four until then and they're gonna make a decision about what they want to do on that day but there still is some time to pick a starter but Chase silth is a potential guy my guess would be that we probably won't see him on the 15th if deur is not ready to go yeah it it's kind of pushing it right they they want to build him back up they want him to be able to throw 80 pitches plus and so he's got to work on getting that back up again um it is interesting Mike because this is kind of reminiscent of remember the Angels last year went with a fiveman rotation except when they needed a six-man and it had everything to do with the off Day schedule and so because of the off days the Angels essentially have a fiveman rotation plus the with the off day right and so everybody gets the same amount of rest everybody gets the same amount of time between starts so that's important to to remember in this conversation Kenny Rosenberg big fan of Kenny k a five and four this season a 3.86 ER in 11 starts he's got a 1.29 whip it's a pretty good numbers Mike for Triple A where the ball flies around in in that in that uh in league and we all know that pitching you don't really get an accurate read Because pitching numbers can be inflated sure and so can hitting numbers but inflated in the wrong direction and so just to hear that he has a sub4 erra is pretty encouraging same thing with Davis Daniel who is three and three he's got a 565 ER in 11 starts and a 1.53 whip but he did just pitch a quality start on Sunday listen to this six Innings pitched seven hits two earned runs three walks eight KS 23 whiffs I think those season statline numbers of three 565 ER little inflated again I think that we've seen good stretches out of Davis Daniel up in the majors of course they've brought him up several times and didn't use him um so I would like to see him possibly get a start if he's going to be needed by the time the 15th rolls around you got to use Davis Daniel he's a he's a Hall of Famer here on lock on Angels when you bring him up you got to use him Angels come on here's two names that probably won't be brought up but I'm sure will be considered and the first is Zack Pac really struggling John and I know that there is inflated numbers but these numbers don't look good at all two and seven 652 ER 11 starts one six Whip and then currently injured right now but Andre wance has been stretched out to be a starter he's had a couple of really good starts but recently has struggled he's one and two with a 4-1 five ER just four starts with a one-1 whip the Whip is actually really good but he is currently on the iil then next up we have Brett KY who's two and one he's got a 4 one7 ER eight starts in nine games so he did have a a bullpen spot there a 1.11 whip now the only thing about Brett krey is he's not on the 40-man roster so the Angels would need to make a move there how about from double A they have Victor mados he's three and three with a 4.35 ER in 10 starts and a 1.34 whip that's pretty good we saw him pitch a lot in spring training so he's an interesting option and then Mike Jack konowitz he is one five with a six ER and 10 starts with a 1.45 whip probably not somebody that they'll go to Mike if you had to guess or if you had to even make your pick who were you taking from these options well did you notice that uh we didn't mention Kaden Dana and that was on purpose thank you thank you because that guy that guy needs to stay down there and continue to develop but Johnny I think that the most logical decision would be Kenny Rosenberg if they need a starter on the 15th if they're not gonna call Reed demmer's back up but mahart says I'd love to see Davis Daniel get a shot because Davis Daniel I think has a bit more of a trajectory of being a a starter Kenny is kind of a long reliever a little bit older and I would love to see Davis Daniel get that get that shot especially against San Francisco it'll probably be a day game they'll probably be you know obviously they're going to be outside near the near the water so I I would love to see him go out there and hopefully maybe give us a good five six Innings I'd love to see what he can do and so my heart says Davis Daniel but I would guess that Kenny Rosenberg is gonna be the guy that they're gonna call up if they do call somebody up outside of demur yeah that'll be the definition of a spot start having Kenny Rosenberg come up and give them you know at least five if that's what they can get out of him and you're right it's going to be one of those those getaway games probably and and so it'll be interesting to see how the Angels uh play this out they've got options we'll see how things land they might even bring Kenny Rosenberg back sorry lemon got very excited about Kenny Rosenberg um they might even be bring Reed demmer's back by that time so we'll see what happens there well if you're working on your car meniscus on April 30th this is interesting listen to this the Angels were 11 and 19 at that point do you know what the record is since they've not had trout with them do you know what it is yeah it's right in front of me uh 11 and 19 yes so 11 to 19 with trout yeah and 11 to 19 without trout that blew my mind when I saw that in our notes that's crazy so here's here's a question for you and our every dayers does this team need Mike Trout back is he a Difference Maker considering the record is the same with without trout just like you too wither Without You wither without trout 11 and 19 now when we say do we need trout back is he the Difference Maker obviously we would benefit from having him in the lineup but here's what we actually mean why don't you explain that mik yeah does the play feel different when trout is around does does the mental mistakes continue to happen the base running errors that that happen over running the bases or trying to take the extra base does this happen with trout like all of that do you think that that takes place if Mike Trout is there in the dug out playing every day like what does he actually bring to this team currently right and the reason why it's important to bring it up is because obviously he's rehabbing and you don't really need to rush him back because this team isn't going anywhere however is the team better because Mike Trout is actively playing and the easy answer is yes but I wonder and I would love your thoughts on this Johnny I wonder what kind of impact Mike Trout has because the narrative has been and I've been a part of that narrative The Narrative has been that trout doesn't necessarily lead like I think some people want him to lead right he's not Michael Jordan vocal right he's not that type of guy he's not Tommy fam let me fight that guy right like that's not Mike trust it's not how he's wired and to ask him to be what he's not is unfair so the question really that we've been thinking about as we look at the same record that the angels have with him and without him does he bring any additives to this team and I'm talking about some of those intangible things do you think some of the errors happen some of the mistakes happen do you think I know he struggled with runners in scoring position do you think that they struggle as much with runners in scoring position are they making more smart plays and smart decisions like they did last night tell me tell me your thoughts about Mike Trout's impact on this team well when he is in The Dugout you can see that he's talking with guys he's working with them he's helping them out with their swing and whatnot and and you know feeli and things like that so obviously he is he's got the wisdom right Mike he's got things that you would want to listen to if you're going to learn from anybody it's Mike Trout now he might not be the vocal leader the Kobe Bryant style leader that we have wanted him to be and Angel fans have wanted him to be at the same time I think he might be the guy who can put his arm around you and say hey like go back out there do it better next time you know that sort of thing just the encouragement now as far as the play goes on the field I don't know that it's any different with trout because kind of what we talked about yesterday there are a lot of guys on this team learning on the job it is the Halo learning experience season of 2024 Michael and that's what's happening here when you've got issues on the base paths and you've got young guys not sliding or you've got guys running into outs look it was very refreshing to see the Padres run themselves into outs and for Taylor Ward and Zack Netto to combine for those for those uh incredible plays and it was like man I'm so glad that's not us for a change I'm so glad that somebody else is making mistakes and somebody else is struggling out there and we actually look like a competent team so all of that to say yes we certainly missed Trout's offense we miss his defense we miss him in the lineup but as far as is he going to keep these guys from making the mistakes I don't think so I think they're still going to make the mistakes that they make at the same time having his wisdom in The Dugout having him there to you know have conversations with the guys or figure out like hey what's going on in my swing right I mean he could have an impact that we don't see behind the scenes in the locker room in The Dugout and so yes I think that we need him back I think that in terms of this team performing the same as they have with him and without him is really interesting but if you just go off the Record alone mik think about how many moments where an additional Mike Trout solo home run or a two-run home run I know we gripe on him for not hitting well with runners in scoring position but a game like last night I would have loved an extra run from Mike Trout even if it was a solo home run and stez had more of a cushion unfortunately he didn't need that cushion but I I would love to have his offense back and I wonder if that's the difference with some of these one-run games that happen Mike Mike Trout has his clutch moments he has his moment I mean he had one earlier this season right and we did a whole our whole segment Mike Trout clutched up that was great and so to me just the offense here is a key part of this I still think the mistakes happen I still think the angels are learning on the job but you can't go wrong with having trout with this team right right and you you hit the nail in the head and I think the nail in the head is this that that record of 11 and 19 since he's been out is probably more around 500 if he's in this lineup because he is going to add a run or two in a game he's going to come up in situations where it matters he's going to be leading off which means that somebody like Nolan shawell is batting somewhere else or the lineup is adjusted so I think his impact would be major not NE necessarily keeping the guys from making mistakes but I think his impact would be major in that he would be somebody that kind of throws this team on his back and that's what this team desperately needs they don't have that with anybody that that they don't have that I mean Otani was that last year even though they didn't pile the wins on Otani kept this team in games and I think Mike Trout does the same thing I don't think it's such a GameChanger that they're in the race but Mike Trout I think makes the 11 and 19 record maybe more around like 14 wins yeah right instead of being eight games under 500 they're just a couple of games under 500 with Mike Trout in this lineup now question for you if Mike Trout is still here we lose everything that Kevin po has brought to the team so I I kind of Wonder do those cancel each other out does the offense we've been getting from Kevin PO either cancel out what Mike Trout could have done in that time or even even surpass what Mike Trout has done do you think that's an interesting thought and I you know my my first thought on that is it feels like they would cancel each other out however I think trout getting hot and he was starting to hit pretty well sure I think that maybe I'm gonna go with trout over polar even though po has been a godsend for this team yeah he has been incredible since he's arrived right after trout went on the iil because he's had this month of May with the angels and he's just been incredible ever since he got started hey thanks for aing lockdown Angels your first listen of the day they do play the Padre's game two is
