what's the price of living in Paradise Lord how Island locals put it at 30 to 50% more than the cost of living on the mainland you're dealing with extra freight costs everything has a large charge on it to get over here on the ship or on the plane so that has really made it quite difficult say if you did ww online or calls online they'll deliver directly to the ship but then you're looking at about $700 a cubic meter in Freight in order to get to the island here so you have to pay for that every 2 weeks the supply ship arrives delivering everything from groceries to fuel to cars and building materials often delayed for Days by tide variations the locals they're Islanders aren't they so they know they're are Pros cons to living on an island and you can't see it now but the entire front portion of the hold is full of of food pets full of food and grog we carry a lot of Grog if the thought of spending $17 on a jar of instant coffee makes your Hip Pocket hurt consider the tradeoff Islanders say a simple lifestyle and local produce help them keep costs down guest house and grocery store owner Ronnie Owens says her Freight bill is around $150,000 a year so she makes sure nothing goes to waste she we've got stuff that is going off instead of having a big spoilage Bill at the end of the year Financial what we'll make condiments and pickles and we do all home cooking most people grow their own food barter with others and rely on the world heritage listed Islands natural resources with this fish truck my main source of protein is the fish which is supplied on island obviously so my free cost kept fairly low like most nights um our dinner plate will probably consist of maybe I reckon 65% 70% that grown or caught myself so um yeah it's a pretty good feeling locals say their precious environment is also factored into the cost of living and doing business here the environment is a lens that we all look through first if you want to have a business activity um on the island first it needs to be seen through well what impact is that going to make on the island um what impact is that going to make on the community a holistic approach to wrangling cost of living pressures in this remote Paradise Hannah Ross ABC News Lord how Island
