gunman tried to kill former president Donald Trump they gathered in Butler County where the gunman opened fire during a rally last month the bipartisan task force made it onto the rooftop this is where the 20-year-old took aim at Trump injuring two rally goers and killing another the big thing for us being here today was to actually be on the ground get familiar with the ground be comfortable with the questions we were going to ask because of the way it was laid out I definitely took note today that there were a lot of lines of sight that appear to have been unsecured the task force has subpoena power as it tries to identify security failures the panel has until December to submit its findings Illinois governor JB pritzker is voicing his thoughts on vice president kamla Harris pritsker appeared on CNN last night to talk about the migrant crisis and his thoughts on Donald Trump's attacks on Harris for not spending time visiting the southern US border look I whether you're there or not there I mean of course visiting the border is one thing to do to draw attention to it but the most important thing that she can do is have a policy that will actually make a difference and that's what she proposed signing when she was up there on stage giving her acceptance speech her also urged Congress to get on board with a new border security Bill he noted to how Harris promised at the DNC that she would sign it if it passed well one of the protesters arrested last week during the Democratic National Convention is heading to court today you may remember Chicago police arrested 56 people one week ago the group Behind Enemy Lines staged a pro Palestine rally outside of the Israeli consulate downtown without a permit people at the rally then clashed with police leading to mass arrests Behind Enemy Lines say that one of the people police picked up has a pre-trial hearing this morning they plan to be there demanding all charges be dropped millions of people in using they are used to weathering a different kind of storm so ahe will tell you about the happy Milestone they're now celebrating [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] welcome back a federal judge in Texas temporarily blocks the Biden Administration from granting legal status to undocumented immigrants married to US citizens the ruling prevents the administration from approving applications that that process just started last week while the court considers the merits of the case 16 Republican lad States challenge the new policy saying it is essentially amnesty well as we keep an eye on your world on this Tuesday morning we now know at least seven people are dead killed in what Ukraine is calling the most massive attack since their war with Russia began around 100 drones and 100 missiles rain down on nearly every region in Ukraine many of them targeting energy infrastructure leading to power outages in several cities this hotel and other civilian buildings were also destroyed in the attack this comes as Ukraine captures more territory during their counter invasion of Russia's K region now to Sudan where heavy rain caused a dam to burst killing at least 30 people that's according to the United Nations who say that more are likely dead the dam was the main source of drinking water for Port Sudan the deao capital which is home to the airport and receives most of the country's deliveries the crumbled Dam and floods are now devastating a region that is already reeling from months of Civil War War right now a quarter of the US is dealing with dangerous weather with more storms on the way while tens of millions including us right here in Chicago under record-breaking heat alerts cbs's Jonathan vigilia reports a devastating and deadly landslide in the picturesque Alaskan Village of kakan triggered by Heavy Rain it crossed over about three different roads in the community and took out several homes including pushing some homes in to other homes mayor Rodney dial says one person died and three were injured as the wall of mud and debris ripped through neighborhoods the slide occurred late Sunday afternoon and concern is growing another one could be imminent what are the odds of that potentially happening based on what you're seeing we're concerned that the ground has been weakened in that area and it has significantly increased chances that we could get an additional slide some lifelong residents in ketan say this is unprecedented the mountain have always held in a community that often receives more than 12 ft of rain a year this is one of the rainiest spots on Earth so for us to have an actual Landslide is just it's it's very very rare meanwhile in Arizona a monsoon sparked flash flooding in Grand Canyon National Park more than 100 people many of them hikers were trapped near jaup Falls the National Guard deployed a Blackhawk Chopper to rescue the stranded one hiker 3 3-year-old choa Nickerson was swept away her body was found in the Raging Colorado River and in Hawaii tropical storm hone has moved on but left behind torrential rainfall and flooding parts of Hawaii have seen their third wetest day in the past 75 years thousands lost power and all these storms share one thing in common climate change is making them more extreme meanwhile in the Pacific Hawaii bracing for another hurricane expected to weekend before it makes landfall later this week John the votti CBS News Los Angeles we back here at home taking a live look outside right now over Millennium Park where things are already starting to warm up out there yesterday was hot and humid today is another day of the same and potentially even hotter let's bring in meteorologist Ed curan for a look at our first alert forecast Ed good morning to you pink and orange usually means it's hot right these are not the colors of August as you want to see that's for sure Jackie absolutely yeah we have excessive heat warning up for the Chicago area as you can see in the pink here heat advisory just off here in Northwest Indiana uh it's all bad news for us again folks yesterday we missed hitting the record by one degree today I think we can exceed the record the record is 97 degrees we're going to have all the heat in here like yesterday we're going to add the humidity to it like we did yesterday and we're going to have heat index levels that rise dramatically right now we're looking at 79° in Chicago it already feels like 82 de with this very soppy 70° dupoint temperature a measure of the moisture in the air temperature right now 79 degrees at O'Hare factor in that humidity it feels like 82 at O'Hare feels like 80 at Midway already at this time of the morning and we're looking at temperatures that'll rise to about 98 today chance of some thunderstorms very widely scattered in the afternoon a little more frequent as we head into the nighttime hours so 98 today heat index to 110 plus future feels like temperatures here on this model bring us up to 108 Dees and areas out to the southwest and 107 at oare storms come in this afternoon I think they'll be uh scattered about and become more frequent as we go into the nighttime hours but you can see we have some very strong storms we do have a chance for strong to severe storms around here level two of severe in the yellow that's level two out of five and level one to the South heavy rain we can have strong damaging winds a lot of lightning out here as well along with hail tonight 74 degrees we stay very warm with scattered thunderstorms and tomorrow what relief with 86° tomorrow 87 Thursday 84 Friday and look at that holiday weekend coming up beautiful weather Sunshine nice temperatures back to you all right Ed thank you so much well you might remember this little girl we first told you about Mary Hill of neille about a year ago she has wolf Hersh horn syndrome which causes delays in growth and development the family says she has taught them the true meaning of the quote life is not about waiting for the story to pass it's about learning to dance in the rain so each year they host a dance party to celebrate her the family just celebrated Mary and her twin brother James's fifth birthdays and they started kindergarten a few days ago Mary says she wants to be a dancer when she grows up well a historic Mission delayed coming up space historian Jordan Bim is here with us with more on what we can expect from the first ever private space walk and this morning we are on the roof of the Emily hotel at the Rooftop Cinema Club and we're going to talk to people who make it happen from everything from that ginormous screen behind me to these headphones we'll be right back with more [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] welcome back SpaceX has pushed today's scheduled launch of Polaris Dawn to tomorrow because of a helium Lake the historic mission is set to take a civilian crew of four astronauts into a record orbit above Earth more than three times higher than the International Space Station the mission will also attempt the first ever commercial space walk so joining us now to dig into the significance of this launch space historian and assistant professor of science communication at the University of Chicago Jordan Bim so Jordan good morning to you thanks so much for being with us yeah great to be with you so this launch has many first including that it is the first commercial space walk and the farthest human space flight since Apollo so can you just help us put that into perspective right so when we think of billionaires going to space we often think uh of these sort of thrill-seeking adventurers who just want to get like a really good view of Earth and come back down you know in a matter of minutes but Jared isaacman the billionaire behind this flight uh you know really wants to take uh commercial space flight and Associate it more with what we uh think of when we think of space exploration which was science and pushing the boundaries of what is possible so he is really trying to go for some record firsts here including the highest orbital altitude achieve achieved uh you know since the Apollo Moon flights in the 1960s and '70s and the first all commercial space walk and this will be the first time that the crew Dragon uh SpaceX capsule has been used for an Eva and the first test of spacex's new Eva suits which you see on the screen right now so it's going to be a very exciting mission to watch it's going to bring back that sort of excitement that we associate historically with space exploration wow I love it let's talk a little bit about the crew this will also be the highest flight by a woman ever so Sarah Gill and Anna men are going to be aboard that what is the significance of of that right so you just put uh you just you just said it uh they will be the the um uh the record holders for uh for the women's altitude record uh previously that was uh held by Kathy Sullivan who was one of the astronauts on the Space Shuttle that actually put the Hubble Space Telescope into orbit back in 1990 uh that flight reached uh about 500 km above the Earth so they're going to be going significantly higher than that and even though only two members of the crew Sarah Gillis and Jerick isman will actually leave the spacecraft to do that space walk um it's important to know that the other uh astronauts inside the capsule will also be in their suits as well and experiencing a vacuum there's no airlock uh in this Space Capsule so all of them will be exposed to the vacuum of space but only two will actually go outside for about a half an hour and that is planned to happen on day three of this Mission so if we launch on Wednesday you know watch for it around Friday or Saturday this may be a really silly question but what do you get when you get higher or go higher into space and into orbit like is it just a a better view of I mean what is the goal of that I guess so there's actually something really important out there it's something called the Van Allen radiation belts and it is part of the Earth's magnetosphere that uh traps uh charged particles and this can be a very dangerous environment to spend a lot of time in but because these astronauts are only going there for a very brief period of of you know matter of hours or days uh you know they should be okay but they do plan to carry out some biomedical experiments about the radiation dosage that they receive flying through that area of space that normally astronauts never encounter unless they are flying to the Moon as we did in the late 60s and early 70s fascinating okay I want to quickly ask you about the two astronauts who are currently stuck up at the International Space Station after the Boeing Starliner ran into some problems mid-flight we know that they will be coming back on a SpaceX much later than originally planned so what does that say to you about both companies and just the space industry as a whole right now well this week really is the tale of two spacecraft right and this is the type of space history that we don't want to be talking about this is the first time in space history that the first crude launch of uh of a new type of spacecraft the Boeing Starland will not carry those astronauts back to Earth so over the weekend NASA administrator Bill Nelson made the tough but correct decision to have them remain on board the ISS and to fly uh back to Earth in February with the crew 9 SpaceX Dragon uh capsule so you know this was because uh the Starliner encountered some Thruster issues on its way to the ISS the Boeing team and NASA Engineers have not been able to understand exactly what that problem is so they can't put a risk uh assessment on that so they made the correct choice just to keep the astronaut safe Jordan Bim space historian and assistant professor of science communication at the University of Chicago thank you so much for your time great to be with you Jackie thank you we'll see you right after the break [Music] [Music] this is CBS News Chicago good morning I'm Jackie CK with a quick look at your local headlines first let's get started with meteorologist Ed ker for a look at today's Scorch and hot forecast Ed good morning yeah good morning Jackie it's uh right around 80 degrees and Chicago and it feels like couple degrees warmer when you add in the humidity today we'll hit about 98° with heat index levels that could get as high as 115° storms later today could be strong or severe but give us relief in sight with 86 Dees on Wednesday 87 Thursday and a spectacular Labor Day weekend ahead Jackie that's good news Ed thanks so much and to deal with this extreme heat Chicago public schools are moving all outdoor activities inside or canceling them alog together they're asking that kids dress in light loose fitting clothing and bring water bottles to school meanwhile in Gary Indiana Baner Elementary is closed today because their air conditioning is not working they actually sent students home early yesterday as well well remember there are cooling centers across our area so you can find a list and more information on our website at CBS chicago.com or call 311 let's go a quick check of your traffic on your Tuesday morning as you're heading in or out of the city your inbound expressways have been building over the course of the last half an hour or so your inbound Kennedy is at just under an hour 57 minutes your inbound Dan Ryan at 38 minutes your inbound Ike at over an hour and your outbound expressways are building as well your outbound Kennedy at 47 minutes I'm Jackie costc have yourself a great day and a great week ahead [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] this is CBS News Chicago welcome back I'm Jackie costic with your top headlines on this Tuesday morning we are in an excessive heat warning through tonight as temperatures continue to soar into the dangerous category meteorologist Ed Curran is now here with our first alert forecast and Ed we really are talking about dangerous uh temperatures uh with the humidity too that's just it's cooking and it makes my hair gooo that's that's the meteorological term we use yes uh the uh the old hair hygrometer yeah tells us just how humid it is outside and uh absolutely you know what it is uh it's not just the heat as you know it's the humidity we had a good deal of humidity yesterday and we'll have more of it today in fact we'll have heat index levels that could get as high as 110 115° in some areas Sunny hot humid weather 79° right now due points at Tropical 70° levels so very very moist air Southwest winds at six makes it feels like 82 de outside we have excessive heat warning in place for most of the Chicago area with those heat index levels that'll climb together with the temperatures that get up to about 70 about 98° today that would break the old record of 97° plus all the humidity in here storms coming late today that could be on the stronger even the sever side and the humidity makes it very very dangerous because your body can't dissipate the heat when you sweat you've got so much moisture in the air you just can't sweat the way you'd like to so um stay in touch with the weather today stay hydrated and the heat has a cumulative effect on your body so you want to make sure that you get into an area even for a little while with air conditioning and that helps take the toll off your body okay go into a store do something if you don't have air conditioning 988 today after the storms come through we bring in relief tomorrow with 86 degrees 87 on Thursday temperatures that moderate you ought to be in the low 80s this time of year right around 81 degrees and look at where we go for the holiday weekend as we get into Saturday and Sunday and Monday your temperatures cooperate nicely and we'll have lots of sunshine around Jackie all right Ed thanks so much I have composed myself after a good chuckle there so today's hot weather has uh some schools making adjustments as well in Gary Indiana Baner Elementary is closed today because their air conditioning is not working so the school also sent students home early yesterday the Gary School District canceled all Middle School athletics today and all high school teams are practicing inside it is a similar situation for Chicago public school students Outdoor sporting games are canell and outdoor practices are either moving inside or being canceled as well we sent our crews to test the temperature of this artificial turf at Sher High School in Irving Park using an infrared thermometer well temperatures read as hot as 160° we also want to remind you there are cooling centers open across the city so the six community centers on your screen are open from 9 to 5: through tomorrow Library Chicago Park District facilities city colleges of Chicago and police stations are also open to help they will uh open through Friday there are six senior centers open as well if you need help getting to a cooling center you can call 311 and we also have a list of resources on our website at a big Hotel on Ohio Street the project is expecting to bring 3,000 Casino jobs to the neighborhood it's another major step that we saw this summer B closed that funding gap for the new casino it entered into a $940 million deal with gaming and Leisure properties that's a real estate investment trust firm so this morning we're going to hear from uh the head of B from the vice mayor of the city of Chicago and we'll see really how they see that the this project will begin to take shape and Jackie we know that they're planning for the casino to be fully operational by fall of 2026 so a lot to happen between now and then for River West I'm Marissa Pearlman CBS News Chicago Marissa thank you yeah I mean 2026 feels like a long way off but it'll come before we know it all right today the Indiana State Police are going to announce how eight dogs died in the back of a hot truck nearly a year ago so back in August of 2023 19 German Shepherds were going from O'Hare airport to Michigan City for police training the driver had pulled into Lake Station after hearing some of the dogs barking were told the trucks air conditioning malfunctioned so Indiana State Police spent the past year looking into what happened and they are expected to reveal their findings this morning at 10:00 well Chicago countertop maker is facing dozens of violations and a million-dollar fine for not protecting its workers two of those work ERS from florenza Marble and Granite have incurable lung disease from dangerously high levels of silica dust a 31-year-old employee even needed a double lung transplant that triggered Federal safety inspectors the US Department of Labor contacted the company about the danger and an inspection from OSHA we called the company for a response but they did not have a comment well in a few weeks former president Donald Trump and vice president KLA Harris are set to debate but they appear to be at odds over some of the rules this As Trump slammed ABC News the network that is set to host that debate cbs's Jared Hill reports that Harris is now in Washington Following last week's big DNC thank you former president Donald Trump casting doubt on his first debate with vice president kamla Harris just two weeks before the two were set to go head-to-head I said why am I doing it let's do it with another Network I want to do it Trump slamming the debate's host Network as Harris pushes for a change of her own her campaign writing Trump's handlers prefer the muted microphone because they don't think their candidate can act presidential for 90 minutes on his own it was an arrangement made during the only debate between Trump and President Biden yesterday the former president suggested he'd have no problem with the switch it doesn't matter to me I'd rather have it probably un also yesterday Trump sought to tie Harris to the attack that killed 13 troops at kabble airport 3 years ago during the Biden administration's chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan he laid a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery and campaigned in Michigan the humiliation in Afghanistan set off the collapse of American credibility Harris released a statement saying those who died in the Cabell attack represented the best of America she's believed to be preparing for the debate this week while surrogates hit the campaign Trail Monday is going to help America's Working Families America's middle class later this week Harris heads to Georgia while Trump will be campaigning in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania Jared Hill CBS News the Harris campaign posted on social media they believe the issues for the debate are now settled for September 10th the two vice presidential nominees are set to debate on October first right here on CBS well nothing beats a rooftop Tuesday morning but man is it cooking out there uh let's send things over to meteorologist Ed ker for another look at our steamy forecast Ed I'm not going to make a joke about my hair and this humidity we will just roll right along do you know that uh one of the instruments used to measure humidity does use human hair inside of a thing it's a hygrometer and instead of being electric I mean it uses a human hair wow there you go anded you are full fun you well so I'm a scientist I don't know how fun they are but they're FS anyway you are the human hygrometer Jackie and we have an excessive heat warning that's up until uh tonight when we have some storms come through that'll give us some relief from the heat but boy we've got the heat the humidity today we have dangerous conditions around Chicago as humidity is once again up at those tropical levels so lots of heat around here 79 de currently due point of 70° tropical feel in the air makes it feel like 82° Southwest winds at 6 mil per hour 79 degrees in O'Hare we're missing a bunch of temperatures to the South here perhaps the computer will pick those up uh from the Weather Service as we go a little bit later on in the morning here 79 at O'Hare and feels like temperatures around the area as high as that 82 at O'Hare and 80 at Midway Airport everybody else is starting to climb up there as we factor in the humidity we get up to about 98° today 98° with some showers and storms possible in the afternoon widely scattered about a little more frequent as we head into the nighttime hours tonight but that gives us some relief after today's 98 and heat index levels that could get up to 107 degrees in oare up to 115 not out of the question in some of the outlying areas as we go into the afternoon hours Ed Curran is here now with his first alert weather forecast Ed definitely a day to take it slow if you can yeah hydrate hydrate hydrate the heat has a cumulative effect on your body if you don't have air conditioning get in a place that has air conditioning for a little bit go into a store do something like that it helps they to toll off your body Heat's the number one weather killer it's not hurricanes it's not tornadoes it's heat and it sneaks up on you so please be careful and look after your pets as well uh we're looking at a sunny hot humid day in Chicago right now we've just jumped at 8:00 in the morning to 80° it feels like 84 degrees with a high humidity level we have out here Southwest wind at 10 mph and we have an excessive heat warning in the bright pink area you're looking at here and that goes till 10:00 tonight we have some storms that'll come through tonight and bring in some cooler air also bring us possible strong to severe storms across the area as well as those come through so we're looking at that coming through in the late afternoon widely scattered and more frequent during the nighttime hours but it does give us relief on the other side today no Relief hot very humid a real toll on your body so take it easy as Dana told you and our temperatures get up to about 98° that would uh set a new record the record's 97 for today and 98 is what we're looking for heat index levels could be as high as 110 even 115 degrees out there in some areas so do be careful there is relief on the way this humidity is with us for the next few days but the heat is not the heat drops down we're down into the 80s as we head toward the weekend and look at Labor Day is Monday 75° some sunshine I'll tell you more about this in detail coming up D well what a roller coaster it's been at thank you as the heat rises today plans are in place to keep you and your school kids cool it is so hot that area schools are making adjustments and even closing schools in some parts of our area Mugo deway is following that part of our heat coverage right now and she joins us live Mugo yeah good morning to you Dana so just like yesterday which was the first day of school and also very hot Chicago public school officials say all out games are basically cancelled completely and all outdoor sporting practices are either being moved inside or cancelled as well but we know there are schools out there that are also just closing for the day and that includes Baner Elementary in Gary Indiana we know school is closed today because the air conditioning at the school is not working in fact students were sent home early just yesterday the Gary school district has canceled all Middle School athletics today and all high school teams are practicing inside and another reminder for those in Chicago cooling centers are open across the city the six community centers on your screen are open from 9 to 5: through Wednesday libraries Chicago Park District facilities city morning M go deway CBS News Chicago all right Mugo thank you so much stay cool out there yourself now there are now three ATM burglaries to tell you about the most recent was just 3 hours ago on Cottage Grove the video you see here is from a food and Deli Mar in Englewood near 66th and Hallstead our crew at that scene Found What appears to be a metal guard door ripped off its hinges police say the burglars may have used a black SUV during that theft and just minutes later a group of five hit another business in Auburn Gresham this is surveillance video from the diamond Express Market near 79th in Damon Chicago police say the crew busted out the store window to lasso an ATM with a chain they then used a black SUV to rip the cash machine right out of the storefront then it was loaded into the back of that SUV before thieves sped off from the scene right now nobody has been arrested police haven't yet said if this is connected to that other burglary and a string of bold burglaries like those prompted Chicago Police to issue an alert it's for all businesses on the city's South Side that's because a burglary crew hit nearly two dozen businesses just this month alone you can see that crew right here using a stolen car to rip the steel rollup door from the wall it happened last Friday at a rosand store just moments after they got away the police showed up and then the very next day the thieves returned this time they left empty-handed because the ATM was out of cash these people are Professionals of what they do and they've scoped it out they've worked on it they know what the business looks like they're selective they know what they're looking for they know what tools to bring and they just go for it 10 days before the crew hit freshmart Foods in chadam using a stolen Jeep they got away with a cash register and ATM before ditching the car police are telling businesses to step up security if they can and empty cash registers and ATMs well Illinois senators are setting aside more than $1 million in funding to help get rid of lead in drinking water they're especially focused on areas impacting children like schools and daycare centers Senators dick Durban and Tammy Duckworth are behind this new wave of Federal grant money but we still have a long way to go replacing lead service lines across the state it's estimated to cost more than1 billion a hot start to the school year as questions swirl over the future of Chicago Public School District's top boss Pedro Martinez is being targeted by the Chicago Teachers Union over his unwillingness to support High interest loans to support teacher raises the independent experts we spoke with say this is all about leverage as the CTU works on a new contract what's missing from this debate an analysis by a neutral party to Crunch the numbers we have not had a neutral broker bring all of the numbers forward that tells us actually how serious the fiscal situation is that needs to be done sooner than later we only have a few months before this school board appointed entirely by mayor Brandon Johnson decides on hiring and firing the CEO of CPS before a partially elected board comes in so the mayor's opinion casts a very long Shadow a beloved Pancake House in Hoffman Estates officially closed its doors it is the end of an era for Apple via famous pancake house after nearly two decades according to the Daily Herald a note on the door blamed the landlord for not extending the lease Illinois politicians like US senator Tammy Duckworth and fellow Democrat Raja Krishna morthy of shamberg were among its fans but don't worry too much the family-owned business kept its doors open at its bavia location same name and menu well if you live in northwest Indiana and want to go to TGI Fridays for food you will need to drive a bit the times of Northwest Indiana says the location in sherille closed last week the next closest location are in Tinley Park in Oak law it started as a singles bar but switched to serving families in the 1980s changing taste had led fast casual dining chains to fall out of favor in recent years and coming up when it's this hot outside drivers crank up the AC so what happens when you drive an electric car and ahead why extra AC may have you running on empty plus one of the biggest bands from the 9s set to make a comeback what we know about the reunion of Oasis and I was sibling rivalry played a role in their uh hiatus [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] from wildfires to extreme heat to massive slides we are seeing all types of weather across the country today A Massive Landslide destroyed a part of ketan Alaska that's now prompted a disaster declaration there the landslide killed one person injuring several others Alaska's Governor is keeping evacuations in place while Crews work on clean up but we're going to pull together and that's what we've always done is pull together as a community and we're going to take care of each other the mayor of ketchican says in the 65 years that he's lived there he has never seen a landslide of this magnitude now taking a look at Minnesota severe thunderstorms there caused the state fair to shut down early you can see the closed concession stand admit a heavy downpour weather Sirens rang out around 7:00 yesterday at night telling people to prepare for severe weather the storm led to thousands of outages in the area many are still in the dark at this hour well we've been told Ed storms may be on the horizon for us this evening possibly even late afternoon yeah as a matter of fact Dana and I'll show you this in a second but the Storm Prediction Center has just raised us to a level two out of five now we were split across the area before with a marginal level to the South now the entire area is under a level two I'll show you that in a second here it just came in just moments ago we're looking at excessive heat warning across the pink area you're looking at here most of the Chicago area in the excessive heat warning with very high temperatures today and extremely high tropical humidity levels more like New Orleans than Chicago we have a temperature right now in at 8:00 for 80° feels like 84° with high humidity levels in a Southwest wind to 10 m an hour so it's 80 Dees at O'Hare feels like 84 to ohare feels like 82 at both wagan and Midway so the humidity really making itself felt already we'll see a high of about 98° today and we'll have those storms roll in possible in the afternoon more widely scattered in the afternoon I think and later on in the evening hours is when you really start to see more frequency of these storms 98 today would break the old record of 97 heat index to 110 even 115 in some cases possible our future feels like temperature at O'Hare looks to get to about 107 out to the Southwest about 108 some folks could see higher than that so storms roll in widely scattered afternoon more frequent at the nighttime hours and again the entire area now under a level two out of five levels for severe risk across the Chicago area so everybody's in the yellow here after we get through this stuff tomorrow after a night tonight of storms is a nicer night with 86 degrees tomorrow and then temperatures tend to moderate into a beautiful holiday weekend back to you all right Ed thank thank you well this extreme heat doesn't only affect your body you may also notice differences in your car especially if you have an electric vehicle battery life starts to decline in temperatures over about 85° it can decrease by as much as 30% when temperatures climb over 100 hybrid cars Fair a little better when it's hot it's proven to be much better in extreme heat or extreme cold because the internal combustion engine helps disperse the Heat um from around the batteries experts say using a supercharger can also decrease battery life so you may do better charging your car overnight when possible now here's a good tip for all car owners check your tires because they can inflate in extreme heat which can be dangerous well still ahead a convicted felon once dubbed the Pharma bro returns to Federal Court not because of Any Financial crime but because of a hip-hop album how the judge ruled between Martin scarelli and the Wu Tang Clan over an unreleased album and this morning we are at the Rooftop Cinema Club on the roof of the Emily hotel and we're going to be checking out some of the Libations that they have available for folks while they're watching movies we'll be right back see what we're shaking up [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] a group of house lawmakers tour the Pennsylvania field where gunman tried to kill former president Donald Trump they gathered in Butler County where the gunman opened fire during a rally last month the bipartisan task force made it onto the rooftop and this is where the 20-year-old took aim at Trump injuring two rally goers and killing another the big thing for us being here today was to actually be on the ground get familiar with the ground be comfortable with a questions we were going to ask because of the way it was laid out I definitely took note today that there were a lot of lines of s site that appear to have been unsecured the task force has subpoena power as it tries to identify security failures the panel has until December to submit its findings Martin scarelli the convicted pharmaceutical executive is headed back to court and this time because of a Wu Tang uh wo Tang Clan album in 2015 scarelli paid $2 million for Once Upon a Time in Shaolin a one-of-a-kind album or at least it was supposed to be after after his conviction a court ordered scarelli to sell the rap album but according to the suit scarelli violated the terms of his purchase and forfeiture of the album when he made digital copies sent them to other people and even played it during his live streams on social media a judge ordered scarelli to turn over all copies and the British band Oasis is making a comeback the band will play 14 dates across the UK next summer with plans to tour outside of Europe coming soon the news was posted on the band's official social media accounts this morning with a teaser video saying quote this is happening Oasis broke up back in 2009 after it was reported brothers nol and Liam Gallagher weren't getting along and coming up at 10:30 it is excuse me coming up in just a bit it's travel Tuesday and we've got our good friend of the stream CBS travel editor Peter Greenberg live to talk Labor Day travel I'm just looking ahead to the rest of the morning and it'll also tell us more on the rise in cyber attacks against airports and why one way to save space in your luggage could cost y [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] this is CBS News Chicago I'm Dana klov with a quick look at your headlines this morning first let's go to meteorologist Ed Curran for a look at today's really really stifling forecast Ed yeah absolutely yeah hot temperatures Dana together with high humidity levels we're right now at 80° it feels like 84 when you figure in the humidity and we have an excessive heat warning throughout the area throughout the day today so be careful today some storms late this afternoon especially tonight could be strong or severe 98 today would break a record 86 degrees tomorrow as we get some relief from the heat Dana all right Ed thanks so much and deal with this extreme heat Chicago public schools are moving all outdoor activities inside or canceling them altogether they're asking that kids dress in light loose fitting clothes and bring a water bottle to school meanwhile in Gary Baner Elementary is closed today because their air conditioning isn't working they actually sent students home early yesterday and remember there are cooling centers across our area you can find a list and more information on our website CBS chicago.com or call 311 one if you live in the city let's get a check of your travel times right now on this Tuesday morning and some of them are just brutal particularly inbound the Kennedy at 74 minutes and the ike at 81 minutes at this hour well an argument leads to a shooting inside a pizzeria in the Andersonville neighborhood Chicago Police tell us a 22-year-old was at Primo Pizza around 9 last night a group of men walked up to him and while they were arguing one man pulled out a gun and shot the 20 2y old in the leg no one has been arrested I'm Dana kov get local news updates anytime on our Digital streaming Network CBS News Chicago just look on Pluto TV or through the CBS News app on Fire TV and Roku in the meantime stay cool stay safe and have a great day [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] this is CBS News Chicago it is the bottom of our 8:00 hour and we are on weather alert across the city we're smack in the middle of a second day of dangerous heat but today there is a Twist some possible storms on the horizon taking a live look outside right now it's sunshine and calm but those storms could move in a little later on this afternoon so let's get right to meteorologist Ed Curran he's tracking it all in our first alert weather center Ed first we have to deal with the heat yeah the Heat and the humidity Dana make for a d dangerous combination and right now we have a temperature of 80° it feels like 84° when you consider the humidity out here Southwest winds at 10 m hour currently everybody's under a heat warning for the most part and parts of Northwest Indiana under a heat advisory really we're talking very hot and humid in both cases around here so do take it easy today hydrate be ready for temperatures that could break a record at 98 Degrees with lots of sunshine and lots of humidity now we could have widely scattered storms that come through later in the afternoon hours those storms can bring us some large hail and lightning and some powerful winds as well as they come through together with the heat index levels that'll reach 110 to5 de with uh this very high humidity in place as for the storms that come through we're at a level two risk out of five levels of risk in the area for severe storms and that gives us some relief on the other side with some cooler temperatures that head our way eventually we'll tell you about more with the storms give you a look at when they come through coming up in just a little bit Dana all right Ed thanks so much see you then let's get a check of your travel times in the mean time and I mean honestly inbound is just brutal on the Kennedy Dan Ryan Ike and Stevenson the worst though really is the Eisenhower inbound at 80 minutes right now and not far behind the Kennedy at 70 minutes inbound some slow bound uh slow traffic outbound as well well a protester arrested last week during the Democrat atic National Convention will appear in court for the first time today here is a live look at a press conference taking place in Garfield Park you can see the setup is underway a crowd expected a little later we're expecting to hear from a spokesperson from Behind Enemy Lines that is the group who staged a pro Palestine rally outside the Israeli consulate downtown last week without a permit they are calling for all charges to be dropped 56 people in total were arrested at that rally and in roughly 90 minutes Indiana State Police will announce how eight dogs died in the back of a hot truck nearly a year ago last August 19 German Shepherds were going from O'Hare airport to Michigan City for police training the driver stopped in Lake Station after hearing some of them bark we were told the trucks air conditioning malfunctioned Indiana State Police spent the past year looking into what happened they will reveal their findings this morning at 10:00 and a Chicago top maker is facing dozens of violations and $1 million in fines for not protecting workers now two of those workers have incurable lung disease from dangerously high levels of silica dust a 31-year-old employee of florenza marble and granite needed a double lung transplant that triggered Federal safety inspectors the US Department of Labor contacted the company about the danger and an inspection from OSHA we called the company for a response they said no comment and disagreements are arising between groups because of the proposed removal of dams on the Fox River the US Army Corps of Engineers released a study last year recommending the removal of nine dams along the Fox River the fox Waterway agency says most of the dams were built in the 1800s to run Mills the Army Corps says they want to remove the dams to improve water quality and habitats while also lowering flooding risks these are reasons environmental groups like Friends of the Fox River that are pushing for the dam removals but some groups have formed uh are against the idea of removing the dams the Fox River preservation society says the dams maintain water levels which activities like boating and kayaking rely on officials aim to have a final decision by next year and start construction in 2027 big changes coming to River West as B moves forward with its permanent casino today the building that's there now is coming down and it's a historical one really our Marissa Pearlman is live at the Tribune Freedom Center site with today's big changes good morning Marissa hey Dana good to be with you yeah this summer we know that balls officially took ownership of the Freedom Center as you said a historic building this is really the end of an era today we know that the main building parts of it at Le at least will start to come down you can see the excavator set up Crews really already hard at work here it is a sign that the casino is moving towards making this Mammoth of a project a reality now the Tribune publishing Center will be the site of that future casino near Chicago and holet we've been talking about it for years now the city says the project includes a 1.7 billion Casino and Hotel thousands of slots and table games new renderings that came out this summer show plans for a hotel on Ohio Street now the project is expected to bring 3,000 Casino jobs to the neighborhood also construction jobs during this process another major step this summer Val closed that funding gap for the new casino it entered into a $940 million deal with gaming and Leisure properties that's a real a real estate investment Trust Company now this morning we're going to hear from the head of valleys the vice mayor will also be speaking about what the future of this project will look like we do know this morning that they do plan to be open and running fully oper ational by fall of 2026 we'll let you know what these leaders have to say here when this press conference kicks off at 10 this morning for now we're live in River West I'm Marissa Pearlman CBS News Chicago Marissa thanks so much well the DNC may be behind us but a number of local organizations are still benefiting from the event DNC organizers told us their goal was to make the most sustainable convention there was composting for the first time at a DNC and a special program to prevent food waste more than 9,000 pound of food was rescued and the DNC donated more than 8,000 meals through 19 nonprofits we spoke with an urban farm from Englewood that was brought in as part of the convention sustainability effort growing home says next to connections it made with convention guests the urban farm benefited from the dnc's carbon offset and inset program the carbon offset initiative was set up to hopefully offset some of the carbon costs right the DNC brings in people nationally some even internationally to the city um so the focus was to bring a certain green element to it by offering the option to donate to offset your carbon costs to a green project in Chicago we are waiting to hear the final number of donations received in connection to the DNC we do know hundreds of dollars were raised at the convention at least we're told donations are still being made through the carbon inset program we are less than two weeks away from celebrating National Cinema day and this Tuesday today we are jump starting with some movie magic fun our Jamaica Ponder is in fton market right now visiting a unique spot that joins together the mesmerizing views of our city and some of your favorite films all in one spot good morning Jamaica good morning yeah we're on the roof of the Emily hotel right now at the Rooftop Cinema Club and I'm here with the food and beverage director of the hotel Mr Matthew Fran good morning good morning how you doing doing great doing great well my first thing that we were just chatting about is what sort of people you're getting up here because you're the food and beev director for the hotel but we're on top of the hotel so are you getting mostly guests are you getting visitors from across the city tourists who's coming up here yeah we got a nice mixture of locals here um also Hotel guests so it's it's a nice mixture but we do see a lot of uh Chicago residents coming to see us here I'm not surprised because we're going to take a little walk so you all can see how beautiful this space is but first of all there's enough seating for over what 200 folks yes uh we can see just over 200 people here and we actually pulled up two seats for ourselves up front and center this is not traditionally where you would sit but we're going to enjoy some of the food and beverage offerings that you guys have here because nothing no movie is complete unless you have a snack by your side exactly exactly so I want to hear you talk about what it's like to have been the food and beverage director for a hotel and have to kind of pivot to create ah thank you cheers cheers you talk to me about that pivot to create a menu for a movie theater yeah um a little bit different you know used to working with restaurants and and cocktail lounges but uh movie theater's a little bit different um we definitely wanted to focus on that normal food and beverage offering at a movie theater and bring that and curate it out here to the outdoor movie theater and uh make sure they could have that same experience out here can you tell me what's on the menu cuz we have some really cute drinks in our hand right now but I know that this is not the only thing that you all offer yeah so we have uh some great cocktails here um some light refreshing ones to enjoy outside um some um nice cocktails um the food and beverage offerings we bring those popcorns nachos that you'll see at your traditional movie theater we also have hot dogs pizzas um something new to our menu this year we brought in a walking taco which is very popular there people are enjoying a lot so that's a new one to the menu oh I love all the hot food options so you can really come out here and have dinner and a show thank you so much Matthew of course of course we'll send it back to you all in the studio all right Jamaica it looks really fantastic all right summer vacation for pretty much every student is over but a lot of families are still planning some getaways CBS travel editor Peter Greenberg is here with more on what's expected to be a record-breaking Labor Day weekend and it is a new type of camp for kids we'll show you the program teaching them how to stay cyber safe [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] welcome back everyone you know it is that time of week where we might start dreaming about a getaway and joining us now with with uh Peter pix and pans is CBS travel editor Peter Greenberg okay Peter where are you today today I'm actually anchored in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Ecuador in the fabulous galpagos islands and and fabulous you mean it right it's amazing well it's a great protected marine environment it's a UNESCO world heritage site and they actually limit the number of arrivals here so they limit growth this is one place you're not going to find over tourist wow how amazing I'm sure it is but let's move on to more you know realistic Destin and topics for those of us here back in you know back in Chicago School of course back in session but some families may be ready to pack their bags and head out of town for Labor Day weekend the TSA anticipating at another record-breaking weekend and American Airlines says it should be its largest Labor Day operation ever so how do you see this weekend playing out and how early do you head to the airport on this holiday believe well believe it or not a lot of people have already left yeah uh they've already left because seasonality is not with us that much anymore and they can they can book in their flights the real problem is going to be on Labor Day itself because so many people have to get back because of school openings and other and other considerations so that's what the TSA is worried about is that Labor Day return flight that Labor Day mess at the airport but at least in terms of going out a lot of people are staggering their departures but the one thing that you should know is while travel is up this Labor Day 9% over last year airfares are now starting to come down and you're about to see after Labor Day probably the 3D fourth or fifth of September some major airfare sales that'll last throughout the rest of the year oh that is really good information definitely um something to file away there in the old memory for those looking to travel a little later in the year um let's move on to the Cyber attack that hit Seattle's airport and led to a system outage and long delays for travelers over the last several days hundreds had to SLP their check bags through TSA is it just us or are airports getting hacked a lot more recently so you know what gives and and is anyone doing anything about it well it's not necessarily just being hacked it's a system breakdown without a backup and we saw that happen of course last month and the month before that we've seen it happen before with Southwest Airlines in their systems back in 2022 it's a huge wakeup call for any mass transportation operation whether it's an airport an airline a cruise line you name it to get that backup system in place because the problem is not when the system goes goes down the problem is how do you recover and how fast do you recover and that's where the problems completely and exponentially increase that's what they've got to do people who want to save space uh speaking of traveling and cram as much stuff in as they can in their luggage or their carry on turn to packing cubes or even vacuum sealing their items but on your site peterg greenberg.com you wrote about how saving space could cost you big time at the airport what do you mean well you've seen all those ads on late night TV about those vacuum sealed bags that you know they really compress all your items into a very small flat object which is great if you want to save space in your closet but a lot of people are try to do that when they pack their bags uh to go on a trip the problem is that TSA has the right to open your bags if they suspect something's in there that not supposed to be in there and if they do that they're going to break that vacuum seal and you know what happens then everything just basically goes like this and the TSA is not in the packing business or are they in the repacking business and your bag may not make your flight and you you may not see your bag for quite some time so I guess the advice there is only use them if you really need to use them right otherwise you could be some trouble no no no only you use them if you're staying at home do not pack them in your bags Because by the time the TSA opens that I'm not talking about a conveyor belt doing carry-on bags I'm talking the check-in bags if they open them there you have a problem because you're already at the gate and your bags have now exploded so don't do it leave them at home good advice all right CBS travel editor Peter Greenberg thanks so much for joining us and we will see you again soon you got it that does it for us here right now thanks for joining me coming up uh we will be on the news at 9: Jackie CK will be alongside me today in for Audrina But first you might be aware of ways to steer clear of online scams but what about your kids children are becoming the preferred Target of cyber criminals and Asher karashi reports what kids don't know could put their future even their finances at risk [Music] now the kids at this computer summer camp outside Chicago are definitely having fun but the lessons they learning are serious what should you do if you s here account's been hacked they're playing a game that teaches them how to spot online fraud what is the best way to protect yourself from scammer emails I got it I got it I got kids are basically being born with an iPad or phone in their hands and for them to understand how to become part of a connected Society the University of Chicago's marshan chedy designed the cybernaut app to help them become cyber safe so that we're not just throwing them in a pool with shocks we're trying to get them comfortable with the pool before there any shocks on the water FBI data shows money lost from online crimes against children more than tripled from about A5 million dollar in 2022 to 2 million dollar last year hold on that's why cheddy thinks cyber security education should begin as early as kindergarten and she says teachers need better training too like they'll say to a kid well here's your password it's got our class number your personal name like personally identifiable information and they'll put in a little card and give it to them to give to their parents and then and so that's their first experience with the password is it's written down write you can give it to other people your personal information and then a few years later we like don't don't do that not do that it's a very bad idea so that's why it's important to start these lessons early because otherwise you get this poor security hygiene and it's really hard to undo lessons like a zero trust approach online which includes avoiding malicious links attachments and downloads usually from emails and texts also strong passwords for parents and school districts keeping software updated installing security patches and using good antivirus protections there are circumstances where compromised student accounts have led led to significant disruptions and issues in schools kids at school are increasingly vulnerable to another kind of cyber crime one aimed at taking down their entire school system your children's digital identities were compromised everything on my children their doctor's information their bus stop information if they walk to and from school what bus stop they go to their medical records where we live where we work every bit of information about our lives they have I'm Asher Ki CB C BS news we'll see if they can save a few for the stretch run the Cubs offense exploded last night in Pittsburgh as they stay within Striking Distance of that final wild card slot in the National League besides running up the score they had the most stolen bases for the franchise in more than a century Pete Crow Armstrong had three of the eight swipes and check out the jump PCA gets from first when Miguel Laya sends one to the left field corner he scores along with Danby Swanson to make it five to2 Cubs the redot Amaya with his first career four hit game swansby came to the plate again in the six this time he jacks a grand slam his first as a cub the Cubs put a season high on the board with 21 hits in an 18 to8 shacking of the Pirates five back in the Wild Card Chase well that kid doesn't care that the white socks have lost a 100 games Andrew vaugh drove in the first two runs as the socks took an early lead in the series finale against Detroit Nikki Lopez slides home on the errant throw but it'd be the same sad story on the South Side the Tigers put up five in the seventh highlighted by the Spencer Tolson three-run Homer make it 101 for the socks they go down 6-3 the Tigers complete the four game sweep well here's something you've never seen back on June 26th Danny Janson was at the plate for the Toronto Blue Jays when the game in Boston was suspended by rain fast forward to when play resumed 2 months later the traded Janson now behind the plate for the Red Sox catching the at bat he started he's the first player in major league history to appear in the same game for both teams we still don't know if grad transfer Mike Wright or redro sophomore Jack Lae will be the starting quarterback when Northwestern kicks off the season on Saturday against Miami of Ohio cat's head coach David Braun did reveal he took his team through a dress rehearsal this past Friday to get used to their pop-up home along the lakefront it was really good just to work out some of logistics and spacing and warmup and walk from the locker room and everything that that looks like uh you know have not had a chance to practice out there on a high wind day I mean there there's been some wind that we've had to deal with but that's going to be something really interesting as the season plays out meet Sky the lionist the Chicago Skies new mascot the fierce female feline will make her debut on Wednesday at trust Arena when the sky hosts the Washington Mystics so it's bye-bye to Sky guy who will stay on to support Sky through the remainder with the 2024 season he's been the sky mascot for nearly 20 years since the team's Inception but according to the sky the lionist reflects the growth of the WNBA the women's game and fan feedback that'll do it for sports this morning
