[Music] Sam you can sit at that you can sit in that chair if you want just for a minute though hi good morning it's Glen Clark radio so I need to do this now or else inevitably it's going to happen at some point during the course of the show because he found out that his brother when he was in here that one day got to to come on the show so he was like uh I get to come on too right that's that's a so hey man look you you there's there'll be a day where you'll understand all this uh my my seven-year-old my younger son Sam is uh is here with us today because I don't know why I don't know but he's here Sam say hi say hi you gota you we no look at me don't just go back to play on your video gam you can do that out there alo alo I like Sam uh used to do a podcast when we were at the the studio in Hampton every now and then walking through Sam and Graham would go in and let them record a podcast it's good show that sounds like it was actually great except for the last episode they said uh butt and poop too much and so Mrs Clark canell the podcast really yeah she apparently was the program director and she said that's the FCC was okay with it but yeah it wasn't an FCC problem yeah that uh that was a Mrs Clark problem and that was the end of the Graham and Sam show maybe one day maybe one day it'll come back but uh that's the way it goes all right Sam you have anything else you want to say or do you want to go back out to playing your video game no Sam what's your shirt you got an oral shirt on today right you bummed about them losing yesterday all right he just wants to who's your favorite player Sam yeah who's your favorite orial Sam I don't know you don't know you don't know who your favorite oral you got a baseball card that say who did it say on your baseball card do you remember my favorite player is Russ yeah Rush good said on his baseball card that's what it said do you like playing baseball yeah yeah all right what position are you say um base OT Corner yeah's a pitcher yeah his brother's a pitcher his brother's a pitcher Sam's still getting used all right buddy can you go back out and play your video game then if you're not going to chat Sam all right if you sit you can sit there but you have to be very quiet do you understand do you want it do you want to sit there yeah okay be very quiet got it just leave how this goes I don't know how this you want to just leave the video yeah you just want say anything I don't know say we'll just be sitting there this this is how captive I am the person two feet to my right won't listen to the show after the Orioles game yesterday I don't blame him what the heck is there to say all right um lot to do on a Thursday edition of the program coming up a little bit later on this hour we will catch up with the great Buck Showalter uh he's back on MLB Network next week we'll get his thoughts on all sorts of different things also this morning we will head to buoy we'll chat with Enrique Bradfield Enrique of course last year's first round pick for the Baltimore Orioles just like was it two weeks ago he got caught up the buoy I believe from Aber yes yeah um and it's gotten off to a nice start 10 days ago that's the better that's two weeks that's it's synonymous what are you doing why why you making life more different maybe 11 days at this point yeah okay it sounds it's even closer to two weeks what are you what you my seven-year-old I just want to make sure we're giving trying to cause problems accurate information uh so we'll chat with Enrique Bradfield uh also I I was hoping to do both I think we're gonna catch up with Anthony Adams for sure tonight it's actually one of my favorite days of the year because you I man get Sam I said if you're going to talk you got to go out there got it got it Sam listen to me thank you so one of my favorite days of the year if you are a Baltimore if you claim to be a Baltimore Sports person but you're only really about the Orioles and the Ravens that's fine I would encourage you to be more well-rounded than that I said this it's it's funny um Drew talked about it yesterday I ended up sharing some thoughts this morning but reflecting on the 10 year anniversary of the death of the old radio station and that was one of my rules right like that was something that made us different what made us different was you needed to know about the community you needed to know about things that weren't just Ravens and Orioles if you wanted to work there I wanted you to know who some of the high school coaches were in town that were important you needed to know the legendary stories of it's funny uh Tavon Austin announced his retirement from the NFL last week and I thought about and I never did it but I thought about doing a um a column for the website about the great Baltimore Sports phenoms of all time because anyone who was alive in this community knows what an absolute Legend Tavon Austin was a legend and in a way I give him a great deal of credit because it's easy for some people to look at Tavon Austin's career and call him a bus because of where he was drafted but the truth is Tavon Austin went to a public school and became a a national Superstar like I can't even come up with a correct word for it and end up having a legitimate career in the NFL you call him a bus because he was picked so high it's it's almost unfair he had a legit NFL career coming out of a public school in Baltimore but all of us who were around Drew and I had him on the radio show because he was so relevant in that moment Tavon Austin's senior season was such a special time that it demanded coverage you had to be paying attention like when I bring on Tamir Goodman for example because if you were outside then you know for another generation it's Skip Wise It's everybody talks about the Dumar teams the you know Reggie Lewis Mugsy Bogues those teams of the 80s that ultimately um the Baltimore boys documentary was was based on for ESPN ironically made by Bobby Sable house who 1,000% is another one of these Baltimore sports legends but I I want you to know those stories if I was going to hire you when I was program director at the old radio station you needed to know about that you weren't getting the job if you didn't know who Bobby Sable house was if you didn't know who Tamir Goodman was you weren't working for me and you could say boy that's a little ball busting but that was what made us different what made us different was we were part of the community tonight UNBC plays Maryland in soccer and I don't want to oversell it I don't want to make it seem like that it's certainly not going to lead Sports Center tomorrow but if you've ever been to a Maryland UNBC soccer match in kensville you understand you're going to get turned away at the door overflow rockus atmospheres something truly like you know the hairs and your arms stand up and this you know Maryland team probably not as good as some of the Maryland teams over the years and I would say this UNBC team you know to be determined but we're going to catch up with Anthony Adams UNBC soccer coach talk about it because this is one of those things you want to be a well-rounded Baltimore Sports person whatever that's called now they used to say it was a host personality fan whatever you are you need to have experienced a Maryland UNBC soccer game in kensville soccer match dummy Maryland UNBC soccer match these are some of those things that are different and unique anybody from anywhere in the country could understand the Ravens are important anywhere from anywhere in the country you could fly in tomorrow from shoan and understand that like Orioles opening day would be a big deal but you got to be here to know about certain things Maryland UNBC soccer is one of those things it's a big big deal there'll be a wild atmosphere over there tonight what's the weather supposed to be like that's important because I got a soccer match I mean ah there's my guy I think it's going to be fun yeah Griff you're supposed to say right now it's fine as Griffin as In fairness I see nothing but blue skies right now so In fairness I'm always the person that determines what the weather what the weather is today based on what the weather was yesterday looks like it be fine low 70s looks like it oh low 70s boy that's soccer weather may even be a little colder as we get closer to nine I need a hoodie tonight oh I love Hoodie season love that means next week it's going to be hell just be prepared this it goes this way every year if if you're new here it's Pleasant this week you're like boy this is nice this feels like fall next week is the State Fair and the lead up the Labor Day every year when you get to State's Fair season be prepared it is going to be hotter than hell it's like the first week of like college as well that week was always I don't know how to explain it just 100 degrees blistering that's the way it works we get one week in August where it looks like the Fall's coming and then saying saying upper 80s right now for next week yeah like a high of 89 every day so maybe we not hit 90 maybe we'll get lucky we'll see I'm skeptical skeptical uh also boy I did that was a big sell for uh Anthony Adams also this morning we'll catch up with our buddy Jake Funk we've been trying to catch up with some folks around training camps this summer and uh the former turp and former Damascus Hornet is uh now with the Lions after spending some time with the Ravens last year trying to make that roster so we'll catch up with Jake Funk this morning and who knows what other surprises might be in store during the course of the day for yeah Sam that my my seven-year-old son that was the big get today Griff I was I was asking Griffin like hey what' you line up for the show and he was like I got something good today I got something good Sam Clark excuse me yeah Sam Clark big bit Today's Show brought to you by did he just bang his head in the table okay that's what it looked like that was awkward Today's Show brought to you by Live casino and hotel you're planning your fantasy football draft oh I I kind of want to do another I gotta tell you it was almost addicting just doing mock draft it was almost addicting doing the mock draft the other day not not kidding almost addicting doing the mock draft I was like oh I just want to keep doing it so excited about in fact I think I've decided next week I want to have a different fantasy guest on every day of the week geez okay and but two of them we have internal turn two of them are Joe and Ken we just got to come up with three others and like Michael Fabiano comes on with me a lot like we can find people that will come do it man you're getting you're getting into it this fantasy season I because I because I wasn't at all and also because I'm a little bit worried about the orol p football's coming football's starting at just the right time yeah a little bit worried um you're preparing your fantasy football draft you still have time I'm guessing it's been a struggle I've got two different leagues that I'm in where I haven't even heard from the commissioner about the draft I just know they're already punting to we're doing it online which ruins the sanctity of fantasy football draft day which is the holiest day on the calendar there are high holidays in this country and there is is nothing holier than Fantasy Football Draft day that's it so you need right now to take control of your league say we're not doing this we're not playing this game what I'm going to do is I'm going to go to pressbox online.com soal and I am going to get us signed up because if we do our draft at sports and social inside Live casino and hotel then we can get our choice of all you can eat eat appetizers not crappy seven layer dip where somebody thinks there need to be like two layers worth of Olives the worst layer is the olives make it a six layer dip it's not even good I got to be honest seven layer dip stinks I seven layer dips great it stinks the olive part I agree olives are a definitely don't need olives find a better layer find a real layer stop it more galop moral the story being all you can eat on race plus your drinks plus a custom draft kit plus they're going to hook you up with the trophy for the winner of the league and as a nice little tip a $75 gift card for the commiss all taken care of stop worrying about it plus you'll be inside sports and social you heard us talking with Ray the other day about it like you do it next weekend while everything's going on baseball college football season gets underway the US Open the whole deal you do it next weekend you can be inside Sports and social the giant 100 foot media wall all of the games on doing your fantasy football draft pressbox online.com soal I really don't have much more to say about the um the game oh John's decided he John Little Rock hates the Mets with every fiber of his soul I can't be mad at the Mets I'd be mad at the Mets I mean I guess if you were alive in 69 maybe I could understand why you hate the Mets I don't know what there is to say man I I was I was hard on seranthony Dominguez yesterday after the game I was like that's it there is no closer and a few people were like dude you're you're the guy that says home runs aren't supposed to be that big of a deal which like I stand by but like you do it in three straight games that that changes a bit um ironically Craig Kimbrell didn't do the Craig Kimel bit yesterday he did the home runit he did the seranthony Dominguez bit yesterday um I I don't who who we had somebody on last week that when I brought up Sir Anthony mingz they were like uh it was David shenfield that's who it was from ESPN who was like yeah you know he gave up a lot of home runs right and I was like yeah but like you know that was in Philadelphia and you know you got that big porch out and and you know it's like the wall in Baltimore like it won't be quite the same and In fairness two of them three of them have been on the road right yeah three of the four home run runs he's given up since he arrived here have been on the road the only one was the one on Sunday when it didn't matter because they were up by three runs um and they're still all he has not put a runner on base and then given up a home run is it weird that they turn to him in back-to-back tie games you know is that the lesson was it I don't know I don't know what to make of I really don't know how to define any of it what I know is if that's the guy you've got the most confidence in is the guy that's now giv up home runs and three straight appearances you got a problem he's still to me the closer like he's still but you could sense the frustration from Brandon Hyde after the game they're like talking he's like I'm not I don't we don't I'm not saying anything about clothes like he's just not talk to me he's still the guy even just by default yeah I mean you you don't have another guy if there was another guy at this point maybe when Dylan Tate returns you let him try to be the closer I don't know Selby maybe you yeah who knows this stuff has been okay I mean it has been I don't know what to say did get that ground ball that should have got him out of the inning should have should have gotten them out of the inning um this is the the really difficult part of what is happening right now is that we it's I've talked about it a couple times we want to skip ahead to the answer we we want to know should I be spending because in the coming weeks we're going to get emails about playoff tickets what we want to know is is it worth it for me to spend insane amounts of money on playoff tickets is that something that I should be doing should I be making plans for October we had U Mrs Clark and I had some friends invite us to go to Napa with them in October and I was like well like what if the Orioles are in the ALCS at that point I don't think I can make these plans I think I need to hold out that's what that's what's really painful right now we want to skip ahead and get the answer and so when the Orioles lose we we immediately go to oh the season's over they're no good and I I get the feeling they're they're mediocre as hell they are but that that doesn't give us the answer they're mediocre as hell and now they have to come home to face the team that obliterated them that really started all of this the Orioles quote unquote downfall began with that series down in Houston where they just got their asses handed to them it wasn't even competitive in those games I guess the first one ended up being competitive after they fell behind by like a billion they scored like the Friday night 14 something like that like they were getting drilled and all of a sudden you were like whoa what's going on here but that was the only one that was competitive it was the first like bad Corbin Burns start of the season was on Saturday this really did all start in Houston but who knows man that's that's the that's the weird thing about baseball um does it feel like it could be bad yeah it feels like it could be bad man it feels like you could have a a hellish weekend against an Astros team that's seemingly figured things out that's found some pitching it could be an awful weekend with multiple games on national TV it could be awful or this could be the weekend that for whatever reason things start falling their way it's difficult to Fathom that given the bull the Bull Pen is that you keep coming back to I I can I can believe that at some point the offense could just click a little bit more I can believe that heck Dean Kramer has given you back toback really good starts to go along with Albert Suarez giving you three straight really good starts like the the pitching has stepped up again the bullpen is the tough part it is really hard to believe that you can do a lot of winning with this Bullpen I saw Andy Costa shared a couple of stats about some of the differences between the this year's Orioles and last year's Orioles yesterday and sure there's a lot Andy Costa of course who covers the Orioles for the banner the Orioles are 12 and 16 in one-run games this year after finishing 30 and 16 in one run games in 2023 so yes that's like we knew there was G to be regression to that well but like it starts with what Felix Batista it's very difficult for us to understand I I I don't think we appreciated how historic Felix Batista's season was a year ago I really don't think we did that strikeout rate was among the great strikeout rates in baseball history it was Mariano Rivera esque Aus Chapman it was that you can't lose that and just think everything's going to be okay now we also didn't see all of the other injuries coming and there were a lot of us that thought that like hey Tyler Wells might be able to help out in this department and that went off the table pretty quickly it's you know everybody always says like hey you lose a closer you could always just convert a starter into a closer they don't have anybody to convert they don't have any they're out of starters like that's there's nothing here Cole Irving was serviceable yesterday I but that's they don't have him they the horses aren't in the barn man time to call it Patrick Riley tell him he's got the ninth inning who was it that was uh everyone I think may may call for sure May brought up the idea that he was a closer I think Mayo kind of talked about him like that way said he thinks he's a reliever what he said you start him until you callus was like I think he's a closer Costa also says the Orioles are 8 and 38 this season with scoring three runs or fewer a 17.39% they were 22- 42 in those games last year a 34.38% because they had Felix Batista I'm not trying to I mean Yer Canó leading into Felix Batista a closer I would would suffice they don't have such a thing but again that doesn't mean the season's over they don't have to give back all of the wins they stockpile at beginning of the year and there is still time the Guardians provided no help last night they got drubbed I guess Aaron judge is going to hit a thousand home runs again this season this is what it is and it's frustrating because we just want the answer we just want to know right now should we just move on to football should we just sort of say hey this was fun like it was too much to overcome and that's not how Sports works you have to write it out you have to keep being a part of it watching if you don't want to I can't force you to I'm certainly not going to say if you don't go to the ballpark this weekend you're a terrible person I'm not going to do that I don't think I'm going to the ballpark this week though I would have liked to because there's some great giveaways this weekend and it's just the schedule thing for me it's not going to work arita's planned her birthday party for tomorrow I got soccer tonight Saturday I I think I'm helping alltime Lowe's in town like there's just a lot going on lot busy busy weekend maybe I could go Sunday night although the last time I went on Sunday night they got there they got drubbed by the Rangers as you'll remember I got there and by the second inning the game was irrelevant like wow this was fun well so what are the odds of that happening again yeah it's a great point and I can't even take this I think the kids start start school on Monday don't you right do school start on Monday yeah I can't even take the kids on Friday I think no you're going to school for like a meeting on Friday it doesn't start on Friday yeah they have like a meet the teacher or something like that something like that exact exactly right Lamar's not going to be there I know that much um so I can't even take the kids if I go Sunday night I'm I'm not saying that if you don't want to you can check out if you'd like that's your call but this is not you're not going to get an answer you want want to know the answer it feels purgatorial at the moment it feels like because again it's just one win one loss one win one loss two wins two losses just it's 500 baseb it feels per like Purgatory you you just want something but it don't work that way and yeah nobody feels like this is a team that can go win a World Series and I would tell you I do not believe it's a team that can win a World Series today but they they don't play the World Series today day it don't work that way and the teams that look red hot at the moment those like NL West teams by mid-september they could look mediocre it's a long long long season man and it's not a sport that's defined by one pos like in in the NFL of course if you have Patrick Mahomes it really doesn't matter what you look like because you have the trump card you have Patrick Mahomes you have Tom Brady over the you've got the quarterback it's not that type of sport no one guy can be the difference look Aaron judge has been the best player in the American League but Aaron judge does not guarantee that the Yankees does anybody believe that the Yankees look like a I know last night they look good If woto Only Hits home runs moving forward I mean do you think anybody in New York feels after watching the Yankees for the last two and a half months feels good about their chances of winning the World Series no this is that's what this is what it is it's frustrating as hell man man it really is I would rather be coming in here every day and putting somebody up I guess we should do this doing a man of the match which is brought to you by experience The Thrill of the Mars Maryland five star at Fair Hill presented by Brown advisory coming October 17th to 20th see the world's best equestrians compete in the sport of Eventing the ultimate test of Horse and Rider enjoy a weekend Festival featuring local food shopping and fun for all come for the event and stay for the experience and see County home to the Chesapeake Bay Waterfront vibrant small towns and family entertainment tickets on sale now at Maryland fivestar us I would rather be joyful there's something there is something that it does for the community I talk about the the nature of the community there is something that it does to the community when the team is humming and everybody's high-fiving and everybody's excited and everybody wants to go to the games and we're all like if the Orioles had won six out of their last seven with the Astros coming in this weekend it would feel Electric in town but it doesn't and that's a bummer for all of us but it also doesn't mean the SE we want to just say put me out of my misery it's over it can't happen but that's not the case either it's weird like we we know last year's team was a better team than this year's team is right but it's sort of like the comparison the 2011 Ravens were a better team than the 2012 Ravens undeniably one of them won a Super Bowl got hot played good football at the right time won the Super Bowl I can't tell you that this can't be that team I don't think it will today I don't like their chances but I don't know what's going to happen Griffin's still holding out hope that Craig Kimbrell can still be a thing well I was oh you've given up on that I I'm home run later it's been two hasn't it since then this was this was Monday when I said and then Monday he got he got rocked on Monday also got rock I I don't remember when these things happened Griffin maybe maybe it I don't know who knows it's it's what it is man yeah it's look it's hard to imagine a team that's you know not getting Batista back like there that's the bullpen isad will it be helped by Danny Kul will it be help by Jacob web can it still be helped by Grayson Rodriguez and mention Jordan Westberg too yeah all of it all of it like in a world where Kramer and swarez are are humming along and you add Rodriguez and effin back into this rotation then all of a sudden maybe one of these guys could prove to be a helpful Bullpen maybe maybe Albert Suarez could be a bullpen differen maker or Dean Kramer could be a bullpen differen maker maybe you got to throw out everything like but yeah none of it looks probable at the moment and it's all very frustrating and there's no one answer that you can turn to there's no well now it's time to call up there's who time to call up who Nick vesp is coming back today so there's that good I don't think he's going to be the Difference Maker at the back end of the bullpen no there's not many lefties in the Astros lineup either so I'm not sure yeah not sure why I don't know he's because he's here I guess because yeah because they had to option Dylan Tate so they really well they yeah they option Dylan Tate two days ago to bring back Cole Irvin now they got to send Cole Irvin back down so it's what it is man although I'm not even going to try I'm not even going to try to make sense of what not even going to try Orioles open up their series phone on you might you might get recall too I swear to God I'm like I got six pitches I think I think I could throw that ball six times more than coll for sure 100% when we come back in we'll uh talk more about all of it with our friend Buck show Walter maybe he can make some sense of it and if I know Buck he's very level-headed about it here's my guess Buck's gonna tell us we're too worked up that's my guess and not just because we recorded the conversation yesterday we'll come back in talk to Buck show Walter it is a Thursday the former manager of the Baltimore Orioles a man you see on MLB Network he is our friend Buck Showalter and he's back with on the program [ __ ] all right so I need to get this straight because you and I were talking before we started recording here uh you tell me that marylanders have a swearing problem let me go back okay I wasn't looking for I just S I was waiting for you to call and I I just I saw a headline I go oh I wonder who is the uh state that swears the most I was quite frankly thinking it' be New York or who knows and uh it pops up Maryland number one I basically they're taking a bunch of tweets like 1.7 million and just going through which one of them used the most it's not a really scientific thing but I kind of went really my mind is genuinely blown by this like the people I've been I've been to Massachusetts Buck like they they swear quite a bit there 60 so I I've got this statistic that you pulled up it is 66 the number of swear words per 1,000 online messages on Twitter Marilyn not just number one number one with a bullet at 66.3 hey let's put it this way they're they're ahead of Louisiana what okay now I gotta ask the question now I gotta ask the question how much of a swearer are you in The Dugout in your conversations with umpire um maybe a little more than I'd like to be you know it's funny as through the my mother um I gotta tell when every Sunday in Baltimore when she still with us I would call her she knew it was coming after a day game I'd put the phone on the dashboard and the half hour ride home or whatever it was I I I would listen to her and and we would talk and I miss those times I'd do anything be able to talk about one day she did tell me she's you know I can read lips and I gotta tell you it really after that it really lessened a lot and I realized that there's other ways to express yourself but that's you know I it's great I'm usually good about unless the Umpire goes there once he goes there then you know okay but wait now now we have to ask the appropriate question if you're the manager of the Orioles do you have an obligation to swear more in order to honor the legacy of Earl Weaver no I don't think I think you got to you you got to be yourself because I'm G tell you you you wanna you want to lose a clubhouse uh try to be something you're not I mean baseball can sniff out a phony and a heartbeat especially players because you know you're around each other each so much dayto day sometimes 15 hours a day for seven straight days and it just doesn't play I mean trying to be something you're not doesn't play I want to talk about that a little bit Buck because look the Orioles we know and and you're going to remind me they're a really good baseball team and they are right in the middle of things and that's what it but they have been playing 500 baseball for the better part of two months and it allows frustrations to come out and you and I have talked about Brandon Hyde before and I I'm not like a Brandon Hyde apologist I just think that you know he's done a good job that's what I think I think we we we overanalyze small things or we want someone to be demonstrative what you just said there is really interesting to me because like we saw it this week Corbin Burns was screaming at the home played umpire in New York and Orioles fans were like hey why isn't Brandon Hyde the one doing that and I think what you just said is really interesting that you you can't fake that you can't be like that that wouldn't work for a baseball team well not in today's world you know it used to be that the umpires kind of knew that their interaction with coaches and managers and players most of managers was kind of part of the entertainment package and and they all had a little stick the umpires and they' let let you go but now with instant replay and so many things like that personal part of it kind of I don't it's probably not as quite an entertaining a game but I understand the reason why they tried to eliminate a lot of it but you know I I told players before I remember when Manny first came up uh we had a meeting about I said listen and I had told Manny this we'll we'll back you on anything and publicly but privately there's nothing and I told Manny and we had a team Mee about it but there's nothing worse than a team going on a field and supporting somebody in an unjust cause when you go out there and you go just our our our guy's wrong this is just wrong we shouldn't be out here and you can get somebody hurt on your team I said listen just make sure it's a just cause okay you know it surely makes everything feel a lot better have a better taste in your mouth but when you're out there and you know your teammate's wrong about what he's mad about it it's not so I think uh who knows I'd have to look back on it maybe Brandon knew that this guy was wrong I don't know the strike zone was pretty bad that night it was pretty bad well you know you go back on a lot of these umpires and I gotta tell you it's amazing to me that they're as accurate as they are it really is I I I look back through it with with the pure eyes sometime and I go you know what I would have wanted that pitch you know it was borderline there's probably 20 30 pitches a game where they can call it either way and not get get penalized either way on the grading scale so you just want your fair share of those borderline calls I feel like there's a percentage of basball fans that just when things aren't going great they like want the performative aspect of it they want theatrics for the sake of theatrics they want to hear about the manager like throwing bats around in the clubhouse or something well they they they want somebody sharing their frustration yeah hey I'm frustrated why don't you there's so many things Glen that go on in a clubhouse behind scenes that you can't talk about publicly that affect things that go on dayt day and your job description as a manager is in a lot of cases just to wear it you wear a lot of things though you could say something that might make you you look different publicly in a positive way but you can't do it because there's a certain you know honor that you have to and respect you have to give people uh about when they tell you certain things that they don't want the whole world to know about so and I just Brandon knows what he's doing and there's a EB and flow you know why why are you why are fans upset at playing 500 because they were playing 700 plus baseball right and somewhere in between everybody's going to seek their level you know baseball's got too many games they got what 42 games left you're going to seek your level and you know they've fought through a lot of injuries that a lot of clubs uh especially from the starting pitching would not have survived and they have survived it and they're right there with the Yankees and oral fans are going to have a lot of fun in September Buck Showalter with us here on GCR Buck is it as simple as you know we saw what happened with the Rangers a year ago that that none of this all the things that you want to feel like you're a good baseball team you do we now know it really is just as simple as get in and whatever happens happens you know what what plays a lot I think people Miss is that in the postseason if a hitter's on top of his game and a pitcher's on top of his game the pitcher wins so this homefi advantage of playing games at home if the team if the pitcher from the other team is on top this game and really good it it quens everybody I mean it the HomeField Vantage goes away so yeah there's a lot to that you know that just get there and get your foot in the door yeah you'd like to play at home you don't want to have to travel and um but I'm not sure that uh having homefi advantages means as much in baseball as it does in other sports is there something to be made that it is more troubling that a team on August 22nd doesn't have a closer like can can you win a World Series when you got a month left in the season and you don't have a closer on your team who's a closer for the Rangers last year quick yeah it was L clerk right yeah well but he wasn't at times during the year he wasn't that's true you know and I don't know I uh it it makes it more difficult I mean there's nothing that that can wear at a team more than how much is enough mentality like geez you know how much how many runs are make leads matter and you grind all day long and then all of a sudden it's gone it's still the hardest ending to pitch because there certain finality about it and people are giving you their best shots so you know in a perfect world somebody might emerge that has changed roles it might be a starting pitcher once they get these guys back that all of a sudden starts doing that role but you know it's and you trust some of the pedigree of guys who've done it in the past but at the same time at an age there's old saying never let a star fall on you there's nothing worth for a manager when you have a a quality a guy who's done had a great career but it's just not there anymore that that's one of the probably the hardest things about my job through the years was I remember when Paul Meo was at the end of his career in Texas and I mean I could name 10 other guys and you're trying to be respectful but they just can't do it anymore and it it's hard it's hard I I I actually quote you on that the don't let the star fall on you kind of regularly buck and in fact the column I wrote this week I referenced that and I I I brought it up in the context of I I don't know if you're not at the point with Craig Kimbrell where it's not just that he's not the closer it's that can is there a role for him at this point and that's got to be I I can't even imagine the difficulty of dealing with that that are you really watching someone that's just at the end of their rope of even being able to get major league pitchers out Major League hitters sorry I'm not close enough to it I don't watch him throw every day and know all the things that that Brandon and his people know so I'll leave it to them but we certainly know that he's capable of it in the past and at times this year has just hadn't been very consistent yeah it's been rough it's been and it's the walks too right like you can you can live with a home run every now and then and tell me if I'm wrong but like I feel like you can make peace with a guy battling throwing a pitch it gets turned the other way it's it's the free bases I feel like that's the part where you really start to question someone well you know that's the uh TOP Step uh full pack was it Sten house is that the guy yeah uhuh you it's okay if it ends well I gota tell it's not okay that what was so great I used to kid uh Joe Tory about you know what was great through all those years is that Mario Rivera there was no stress in the ninth then it was Bing Bang Boom here strikes are being thrown and you know it's it's not painful to get there and I thought the year that Edwin Diaz had for us in New York with the Mets sure that was it it just gave us such a great mentality to win 100 plus games because this guy just you know there was no stress in the ninth inning on the road big 40,000 people in Atlanta he'd go throw 10 pitches and you're on the bus going home do you let me go back a second because and then I I want to touch on two other big baseball topics with you I I don't think that it makes sense for a manager to be performative or theatric for the sake of it but is there a point in which you have to address it somehow have a like do do you just say hey it's baseball it's game after game or do you have to have a meeting have a sit down you know and talk it out something along the line well Glenn how do you know that hasn't happened I don't and that's it's very fair you come out and go hey I just want all the meeting and everybody no I just I just had a meeting and I screamed at everybody I want you to know about that well that's you know you're certainly not gonna do that I mean but it's got to be what you really feel I mean you know what these guys are going through okay are they playing hard are they playing fundamentally sound are they uh are they scuffling some because a lot of the people are hurt and you you've got to different level of uh performers on the field I mean you got to look at things realistically but you know I I think nobody understands the frustration of the fans there more but think about what you're frustrated about because you've been so good for so long and it's it's been a little bit of a challenge oh my gosh I heard when I heard you say we've been playing 500 you know many people would trade with you oh we spent a lot of years in Baltimore dreaming a 500 Buck you know that I know all Trail me when I first got there it was like wow yeah seems like a distant star you you shut up for a month and we were ready to build a statue of you in Baltimore because of had going no hey you know Nicki marus and uh and Terry Crowley are going Baltimore Hall of Fame this weekend can let's talk about Nick just for a second because Nick doesn't allow himself to be the most celebrated guy right like it's just not who he is speaking that's him yep guys guys being who they are I text him I said hey congratulations I said I'm G be in town I might what I'd love to do is slip in the back of the room right before they speak and then slip out just as they get done just to see it but Nick's the type of guy that you just you know you players love him great teammate played the game right um just doesn't never look at me mentality just about winning and uh he was special he was a guy we built a lot of things around I remember when John Hart called me in Atlanta about signing him I said if you want to give these guys a direction about how to play the game right and they still talk in Atlanta about the impact that he had on all their young players there it's crazy to me how like close he really is to having a hall of of Fame career like I mean it really is not that far off but that the word that comes to mind to me is just stalwart right like you you just knew what you were getting every time with him many great there's so many great Nick marqua stories that people don't even talk about he had every spring I would have I would take infi Outfield the very first day of spring to kind of deliver a little message and new guys coming in we're like wow we're doing this the first day and Nick and Adam and everybody knew what was going on so and Nick had a shoulder issue you know and he had to really watch it's one reason why he had to quit pitching but he would air it out the first day one hop everything right on the button and he would go boys there it is I'm done for the year and he he would show all these young guys and first year players what meant to take infel outfield for and work and uh but Nikki always worked hard at everything else but he knew he had so many bullets in his arm what about he was like e and little things he would say yeah that he would pick his spots he knew how much weight his words carry and he was very careful about it what about Crow what what you know I know that that he was obvious still around when you got here like what what did he what did he mean to you Perry just uh he was a great confidant and I got to tell you like there'd be somebody in Buie or Norfolk or Frederick and I go hey cro can you go over and look at this guy and tell them what you think and he would come back with pure eyes you know just honest crisp hey here's what I see you know he's not he's not g to you know pop his gums and tell you how try to show you how smart he is he had a nice calm way about him he way had a way of visually seeing the game and KN that what was good for Nicki Marquis may not be good for Adam Jones and he it was more than just you know stats or analytics you know I remember him saying this guy will get a hit off a good pitcher late in the game and I always remember when he would say that about somebody you know this guy uh you don't want him around when your finger's on the trigger so to speak he had little ways of saying things that uh but Crow had Crow had great eyes he had a great feel you know F L for um the non um antical of it he got too Buck I'll uh I I want to wind down if I could that there's one thing that jumped out at me last week that was this uh story from ESPN that Major League Baseball is thinking about reemphasizing starting pitching by making there be a six ining mandatory or six inning minimum for starting pitchers you know other other than getting your brains beat in or 100 pitchers or something like that and it sounds like a good idea but then I I don't know it it seems forced to me when you say it that way like really a guy that's at 97 pitches in the sixth inning is going to be forced to finish that inning I I don't that that feels fake that doesn't feel real what was your reaction to it same as you yeah I kind of go okay that's that's interesting let me look at that and then you start seeing all the other the offshoots I always talk about the arteries of decisions with people okay yeah we can do this if we did this who's affected by it you know what where where where are the The Fallout in different areas that that may come back to haunt us you know what what are we going to develop on the other side I heard something interesting today there's so many more Tommy John surgeries now because it's not the risk that used to be I can remember that nobody wanted to ever have surgery back then I mean you you fought it until you learned how to throw a sinker you learn how to throw a knuckle ball you learned something different because the last thing you wanted was to go under the knife and now it's pretty much a recovery you you're able to make it back sometimes they have two of them before and still make it back that used to be a no no but I uh I heard a good one from uh Sherer and that they kind of went with it that if your starter doesn't make it through the fifth or sixth inning or something you lose the DH the double hook right yeah if you take him out in the third inning you lose your DH from that point forward that's interesting you're you're you'd be okay with that one I I didn't say okay I said I had to I'd like to see it in the minor league yeah I guess the tough part for me Buck is I just don't really want to sign up for any scenario where I see more pitchers hitting at this point right I agree I well you don't have to be pitchers you can pinch the the rest the way I would I personally would go back to 11 or 12 pitchers I think you would have a different type of pitcher you know we we had a guy named TJ McFarland who still pitching the big and when I say he was one of the most valuable guys on our team back in those years TJ would take the ball in a third inning when somebody would spit the bit and he would give give you four Innings and the next day you know he just sunk it threw it over worked fast and he was so valuable on our club you come in and go hey TJ so and so just blew his show shoe warming up you're gonna start in 15 minutes y let me get my spikes on those guys are invaluable but you could get back to those guys I mean the rule five draft Through The Years you're lucky if you get a Anthony Santander but for the most part they are they are 12 pitchers long relievers they are left on left guys maybe they are utility in they are backup catchers and fifth outfielders Y and that's very valuable on a team Y and you they're out there if you know what you're looking for but the more they take Scouts away the harder it is to find but he uh I don't know I'm like I'm a little scared about getting to artificial with it you know it's like the big bags the pizza boxes you think that's really affected stolen bases you know it's affected stolen bases the fact that pitchers can't hold Runners anymore because you can't hold the ball I mean these Runners are taking off on the they're not stealing you know these poor catchers everybody thinks they can't throw well heck the guys are halfway to second when they get the ball right there's it's hopeless no it's it's utterly hopeless I agree and it's well you got people stealing second base that got no business stealing second base catchers are stealing them and everybody's acting them like to me it's like the Home Run that's hit off the backup catcher in a 15-2 game everybody goes okay you hit a home run off the backup catcher now anybody can steal a base he kind of taken away you made bases Ricky Henderson would have stolen my God rules 250 maybe like every time he was on base are you kidding me so I I just it's kind of I look at Stone bases differently now and I really feel sorry for the for the catchers I get it I get it all right uh I I know you're a sports fan are you an Olympics skyb yeah I I watch uh you know certain events some of them I shy away from not that because I didn't play up I didn't grow up you knowed swimming thought you be a thought you'd be able to break that down for me um no what do you I am intrigued by the idea I was talking to Corbin Burns about it the other day because it's easy for all the hitters to come out and say like we want to play in the Olympics sure like the pitchers it's far more relevant what that would look like I'm intrigued by the idea it just feels like it requires an amount of capitulation one way or the other that I just don't think is going to prove to be practical to allow pitchers to be throwing extra innings in something that isn't Major League Baseball why you're talking to a guy that lost his closer yeah yeah in the world baseball class great right I can remember like yesterday getting a call from Brandon Nemo that are you watching this we just lost the Edwin but I think it's going to be a real challenge to get people to pitch competitively and and not have something uh come off of it you know it depends on the importance you put on it I I mean you got these contracts and things that are going on with pitchers and you know I I don't know I I think it's going to be hard to put together I really do the pitching like you said it's going to be the biggest issue unless they just do it they just say listen we're not we're gonna play 120 Game season next year and we're gonna play that play this in March and I just don't see the teams giving up dates I just don't I don't I don't see it that I don't see that happening and the one other one too like maybe but could you m make a massive roster for the the Olympics and limit it to like you know a starter can go five innings well there's one way around it there's one way around it you just do it from the college ranks right sure sure sure but it I I get the value's gonna do that do you no not a chance in hell I feel like I get the value of we know that like um you know Bryce Harper is a major baseball star but I I see the what they're seeing is we can make him an international star the Olympics is a different audience than a baseball audience and we want a piece of that I just I just don't know that it's practical all right I've kept you I just I just saw in online that Simone Bas is that yeah Simone BS she she's on doing a exhibition in Fort Worth Texas I'm thinking about going that's amazing unbelievable oh my gosh she's incredible I and buck that's where you and I I'm not a gymnastics person I don't judging sports are not for me it's just tough like I want to see a race I want to see who wins I want to see who scored the most points judging sports are tough but man I've gone to I've gone to a monster truck show with my grandson now that's that's a different audience uh I would actually I'm open I'm open I would like to one day go film you watching a monster truck show I would like to make that you know what it was 60 70,000 people at Cowboy stadium and I I looked around I went oh my God that's cool that's cool it's like wrestling it's like it's like wrestling oh oh look man what's your favorite event what's your favorite event at the Olympics that you you would you enjoyed watching so I'm so glad you asked that I fall in love with volleyball every time I've done some volleyball play byplay but not like a lot of I've worked for USA volleyball a little bit doing the beach volleyball every time I get back to the Olympics and you watch like it's Insanity every point is incredibly high level I love volleyball in the Olympics Buck it's my favorite thing and then um this year I was enamored with the rugby like the rugby at the Olympics was so cool to me I was I was I was glued I was captivated by it and I I forget how much I like water polo too I'm into the team sports I think is what it is you know I had to get a I had to get a I wanted a clock with the Orioles that would help guys with their timing okay so the only and I had to get it make it waterproof I got to thinking I said we got a clock from a water polo team that if it started raining the workout it wouldn't short out we just set it up and it would had a beeper on it in other words we wanted to say that every play was with a runner going four3 down the line got it you know the guys knew so it helped especially a lot of the Latin kids and the Young Americans their clock they were too fast or too slow but some way to help them get a a visual of how much time they really had so we got a water polo clock to do it and uh it was a big hit that's awesome don't tell me that awesome [ __ ] I I don't I was gonna ask you you know what I I got off watching what I really into women's college basketball okay I love the way they I love the way they play it's unselfish they don't play Above the Rim they uh they shoot they play defense they uh they play with great effort on both ends I think they're well coached it's just I I really enjoyed you know I went to Mississippi State and for years we had one of the best program in the country but we lost a coach and some other things but uh it's it's fun for me to watch I love watching Caitlyn Clark play wholeheartedly agree um you know we're so we're Angel Reese people in Baltimore because she's from here and so yeah I saw that the other day we love her and yeah I'm I'm in complete agreement every possession matters it's an awesome product I mean it is really really compelling I I I literally kept you for half an hour I'm sorry Buck I love you man I I've got I've got time okay I know everybody acts like they're so busy and oh my God you know I'm not really and once I leave here and go back to work once uh once just enough to stay married and get out the house you knowz oh you're on TV next week right did you told me that um yeah I'm leaving Friday and then I'm up there for about four four nights excellent Buck show Walter beautiful beautiful C caucus New Jersey oh it's don't don't they say that everybody needs to seec caucus in the summer isn't that what I what I I think I read that they say hey they say a few other things they're going to take over the curse word record before it's all said and done Buck you're the best appreciate you thank you all right I'll take care thanks for having me Buck show Walter boy he's that'll make him like Buck Showalter man I don't know what just happened I sat down to start recording an interview with Buck Showalter and I looked up and I was like we've been talking for 30 minutes I should probably wrap this up my seven-year-old is like I yeah that's Buck shalter but I'm I'm the star let me talk um a few things in there to respond to I know Buck's right and it's the the thing that makes it difficult like I want to come in here and I want to bang on the table I want to be like this is awful and this is embarrassing and I don't think even with the injuries I don't think the Orioles did enough to fortify a World Series caliber Bullpen this year I I coming into the season I didn't think Craig remember when they signed Craig Kimbrell my my answer was right but somebody else is the closer right like he's not the closer now In fairness he was a he was effective as the closer much more than I expected him to be but that couldn't be the answer to me like the answer to me was oh you think inir Canó is the closer and he's just here to be another arm I couldn't believe that the answer for the closer was supposed to be Craig Kimbrell that's not second guessing that was the way I felt in the moment go back pull the tapes I add to that oh he's checking in Arizona's checking in oh always good to hear know Arizona well I do I know him very well um from there once you knew that it wasn't likely I they needed to be more aggressive at the deadline to have find actual Bullpen help not just scraps and I'm not I'm I'm trying to be more polite about seranthony Dominguez in the way I felt yesterday because again I can't it's that wasn't a bad pitch but they needed to do something more Ser I that I think is a valid criticism towards the Orioles but they also lost a thousand pitchers like I I don't know what I'm supposed to do with that part of it it's one thing to say hey you're always going to have to deal with an injury or two they've had to deal with a million and what might this look like I don't know I don't know I don't have those answers so I I can't bang on tables and I can't scream and yell the way that some people would want me to yell the way they certainly want Brandon Hyde to scream and yell I swear to God I don't remember why but like that that tweet from Andy Costa yesterday the first response was from someone like and and you can see the difference it starts at the top and I don't know why I just had it in me yesterday but I tweeted back to the guy like seriously they should hire last year's manager like I just don't I don't know why I don't know why I did that like that guy wanted to keep going back and forth and I'm like I'm sorry I don't I just had the snark in me that's all I had I don't have any more um we gotta wait it out you got to wait it out that's the way it goes my gut it's not going to go the way we want it to go but we got to wait it out and we'll react to it appropriately and worst case scenario we'll be talking more football in a couple of weeks that's the way that it'll go we're going to talk some soccer on the other side I'm uh excited what's that footy footy okay [ __ ] we'll talk some footy on the other side players riding bikes uh in Green Bay today so if you don't know the old tradition is that in Green Bay they like line up apparently the practice field is like two blocks away from where the locker room is so kids like show up with bikes and let the players ride the bike and they like walk alongside um from for the couple of blocks to the practice field and they whenever they do a joint practice the other team does it so Ravens players are there doing it with them Derrick Henry was talking about it the other day when I was out there and I was just thinking about the humor of like a child's bike and Derk Henry attempting to ride it it is good content and you're starting to see some of those videos up on Twitter today with Ravens players in Green Bay riding bikes I can't lie I enjoy it coach will join us oh we're doing it right now okay then let's do it right now yeah tonight Sam I'll get to you tonight men's college soccer season gets underway lyola is on the road but there's a cool one right here at home and I've been to a few of these Maryland UNBC games in kensville over the years and they are electric city baby joining us now to preview his team as the season gets underway tonight he is UNBC soccer coach our friend coach Anthony Adams is with us now here on GCR coach it's Glenn it's great to chat with you man thank you for taking a couple of minutes for us no problem I appreciate you guys uh have an interest in soccer I love that and um good morning to both of you absolutely man coach you know I I I mentioned this I've done this quite a few times over the years I have seen folks get turned away there are lots of ways to start a season there is something really special about when these programs get together in kensville what is so unique about this for you well I think uh couple things I think our venue uh with the you know the unbelievable Bermuda grass surface U anybody and any and everyone will come play us here uh and and top pro teams will train here but I think uh the actual surface and then the atmosphere that's been generated over the years specifically when lights went into retriever soccer park in 2011 um and I remember Maryland came and played as then yeah 43 they won an overtime 4-3 we were down late scored two goals it was a wild finish and then um I think back in 17 uh they came here and we have saw our record it's over 3,700 people so um you know I think it's grown up in in the state I think uh you know obviously people here about Maryland all the time and you know we've uh we've done our own made our own Mark here over at UNBC and I just think whenever UNBC plays Maryland and soccer it's it's a good event it is a very good event it is something very unique in our community and I uh obviously it's very exciting going into tonight coach um I guess let's give me a thumbnail uh this team and and what it's going to take for this team to take that step forward this year in order to get back to the top of the America East I think part of it is staying healthy you know so we had 28 guys came in uh preseason healthy and and 28 finished preseason healthy that's good that's a good a really good start uh getting through that um I think for us you know it's it's life after Taylor Kaya you know who was uh such a big influence within our program both on the field off the field model person model teammate and obviously outstanding player who's now doing really well at the pro level uh and obviously we continue to follow him so I think other guys have uh you know had to step up and fill those roles uh and um you know I'm excited for the group it's a veteran group I mean they they they kind of take care of the Lo room they take care of the of the culture um I've coach where there's a younger te team and you kind of got to always retach that um and you always fight for your culture every day but it's really refreshing being around some guys that some of them have been around five years U during the co year you coach you know one of the things I think that makes you your program all that much more special is how many local kids have been a part of it over the years and obviously I know it starts with Pete and it's continued with you but I I was looking at the roster and there's like even more local kids that you brought in this year yeah I mean I think the spring now has become a big opportunity to recruit uh versus the past I think there's the spring transfer our kids are doing Gap years or Gap semesters and then coming in um you're seeing more of that as these roster spots are now getting harder and harder for kids to get to get with with everything going on um but now we were able to bring a kid back like Ricky schisler um who was Curly kid Baltimore armor kid went to taint John I played there for a couple years wanted to come home and we brought him on in the spring and um and he he's been a really great addition to the typical Baltimore kid hardworking tough loves to play in front of his friends and family and you know uh we're going to continue to do that and we're always going to Target the best local kids every year he is coach Anthony Adams UNBC soccer coach and he is with us here on GCR as UNBC gets ready to host Maryland in the season opener tonight coach when you have like moments like this um you do you have to remind these guys hey it's a game don't get too amped up for it like what what is those what is that conversation like we've had those conversations um you know some some teams in the past that were more mature like 10 years ago our 14 group um started the season at Maryland um I think we played a z00 draw and then that team went on to play in the N tournament and and then you know played Maryland again later that was the team that obviously made a run all the way to the final four um but I think they did they did a good job of not making that their season and I think that's kind of been my message um and I think we we're good with that we have a veteran group of guys but I just said UNBC or Maryland are not making the NCA tournament tonight so it's one of 17 games on our schedule uh it's an exciting game it's an exciting home game um I give Sasha a lot of credit there are some uh coaches that won't leave their you know their their their home unless they have to for an a away conference game and he's always helped trying to grow the game um and I and I appreciate him you know doing home and homes with us for sure coach for you right like you've been there a long time but obviously things changed last year as you took over as head coach what did you learn from that first season as head coach that maybe you didn't even know about the job despite how many years you were on the staff and working with Pete I think it was more and I knew about it but until you're sitting in the seat you don't really feel it because you're shielded it's just there's so many people that want your time you know what I mean and um and I think you know obviously you want to be in position to focus on your players and your team as much as you can but there's just so many different uh areas that kind of demand your time you know like this right now you know what I mean like uh you know like this is my my this is my part of my duties is to help promote the program promote the game right where uh you know this would have been Pete a couple years ago and I'd have been in my office you know doing more stuff right making sure you knew Maryland making sure you knew everything you needed to know I I completely understand that um how how much has it meant to you like what what does it mean to you to be the head coach at UNBC I mean it means everything I mean I've been here since I was 17 years old so I don't know any other school and uh obviously I've watched the school continue to grow academically athletically um and I think the for me it's always been the um the promise and potential of UNBC you know and every I think every sport here has had a had a run at something at some point that was pretty cool um and uh you know I just have a lot of pride in this place as a as a as a former student athlete and a l and and current coach um we were talking about the team a minute ago I guess I'd be remiss to it is is TMO Lopez is that your goalie going into the season yes tell me a little bit I know he got to play a year ago like walk me through because I know he's not like the biggest kid in the world but why do you have such faith in him I mean he's technically really sounds um he's great with his feet as well um you know he's got experience so he doesn't really get rattled I think the way the game's played now as opposed to when I played is the goalkeepers are a really big part of the attack you know with their feet yep and he's just kind of got this calm demeanor about him and um but I will say you know we brought in two freshmen um that have both done really well you one kid's from Canada and the other kid's a local kid from from Baltimore armor and um and they both done really well and I think um and Emmy and those two um it's a pretty good group of goalies we have right now uh and then I know there's some rules changes this year in college soccer and and V comes to the sport for the first time and some substitution changes specifically the V like how how how impactful do you think that's going to be how happy are you that that's an option in the sport at this point I think it's a great option I think unfortunately we don't we're not able to do that at the park at the moment okay all right we're in the future to be able to to have the the technology to do that um and the setup but um you know it's it's one of those things if you have it you can use it if you don't then it's not gonna be a factor in the game I we did a scri the other day the other team actually like wanted to have one of our goals reviewed which ended up being a good goal but uh that was my first experience with it I think the substitution rules um um with the six moments now not including halftime I think I hopefully I'm hoping it's going to help settle the game game down I think the last 30 minutes of of games uh has been pretty crazy over the year very frantic and with all the re-entry I mean you could you could not start a guy in the second half he could go in for 10 minutes come off and then go back in fresh yep where if you watch like a game on TV at some point the game does settle a little bit and it becomes more soccer than than more maybe just up and down so now the tough part is you know I think you know once you come out in the second half you're done for the match right there's got to be some strategy there depending on how the game's going the flow of the game on what decisions are made there so I think a lot of coaches are going to learn a lot the first few weeks um I've coached my daughter's team in this this league and they had five moments game I'm kind of used to it from that have a little I do have a little experience and I'll thank my daughter soccer team for that that turns out to be really helpful that is really cool man uh tonight at retriever Soccer Park Maryland and UNBC said o' it gets underway um and I think I saw there's like a there's like a sibling thing going on tonight right like with Carl and Kenny yes yeah uh it's pretty cool um and I think it's i' mentioned uh in the article I think it's just it's it's more so it's more rare now because of the the fight for these roster spots with the portal and the international player and the transfer and and it's just it's just tougher and now there's rumors of potential roster limits you know in the future um so I think for that to happen now is pretty cool and they're it's just it's such a high character family like both those kids are great kids um they have a great relationship uh their parents are awesome it's just they're just a great family so I couldn't be happier for both of them no it's a cool thing so Carl and Kenny quis th Carl plays for UNBC Kenny plays for Maryland um and you can go to press there's a story about him at pressbox online.com and um I I I I feel like you know like you get a rally around Carl tonight like this one's a we we got to make this like a blood Feud type of thing tonight right yeah Ki with each other like you know you know kind of like telling each other how they played in their scrimmages and and all that stuff so it's been a little healthy competitive that's great you know the parents are I think they might have ordered some special shirts tonight oh the half and half I love that that uh obviously they're going to both games you know what I mean so it's pretty pretty interesting spot for the parents uh in terms of like the preseason match so I was joking with a father the other day and he goes oh no I said what color are you going to wear on Thursday and he's like oh we got we got some special I I think they might got some special where split down the middle yeah the the the the Travis Kel's mom the Kelsey mom the thing the Jersey where you have a little bit of both on I I dig that that's very cool that'll be a great subplot tonight coach Anthony Adams uh wishing you and team best of luck this season I know it's going to be a special night tonight and I know also you got some great celebrations coming up this year you mentioned obviously the 2014 team it'll be great to celebrate them later on in the season as well uh thanks for spending a couple of minutes with us this morning and let's do it again as the season goes along all right I also want to add Glenn if I could that the 99 team I don't know if you're a m thatp yeah a bunch of good local guys that play pro they're they're celebrating 25 years as well this year be pretty cool be a special year coach thank you for taking the time for us really appreciate coach Anthony Adams UNBC soccer coach getting ready is the season gets underway tonight and it will be it will be an electric atmosphere it will be a very special um I keep I keep going only say it so many ways you want to be a well-rounded Baltimore Sports person experience this watch people get turned away I mean i' get there early I think the only good news tonight is I don't know that all the students have moved in yet so there might be like a little more space than there usually would be for a Maryland soccer match so you might get lucky on that one like if the entire student body is there it is forget it there might be a little bit more space tonight than there typically is appreciate coach Anthony Adams hopping on with us this morning still have lots to do today just realized like this has been a day man and I haven't even talked about I I wrote something on Facebook this morning and Rob and Jeremy decided they wanted us talk about it on their show tomorrow I drew reminding me yesterday that it was 10 years ago today that the old radio station died and it's funny because like whenever Drew talks about it he always talks about like him and I'm like that part of it was very small and and as I've said a million times like it was a it was a very good day for me I was I was in a bit of hell but it was just kind of comfortable and I didn't do anything about it and I just continued to go to work every day um the the me part of it is very small because again it was it was a rescue for me the part where I have sadness is that was a that was a really unique radio station one with warts but really unique and like when Rob and I will talk about it Rob will compare it to if you're a pro wrestling fan what ECW was as a game changer is it a force but bar stool has been in sports media industry in so many ways that was the concept of what the old radio station was the old radio station was change it was different it was a frat house I was working in corporate radio wanting to leave to go work there because there was electricity and juice and it felt real and special and there was a true connection with the community that existed in that place I was working for CBS Radio desperately trying to get to the much smaller radio station which sounds crazy but that's how cool and how unique and how special that place was and it was the concept was perfect you never knew what you were going to hear there was a danger to it and everybody would sit in on everybody else's shows and it really was like this Walking Fred house you'd walk in at a time where you you weren't on the air and there'd be like six people in there and you'd be like what what's going on today but that was what made that place so unique um it was a place that people cared about and obviously you know Rob Jeremy Bob Drew you know yeah fair fair fair Cunningham Ken weinman spearo Glen Clark I guess that's you that's me he forgot I think he thinks that you're that's weird I don't blame I can see sometimes I can see it yeah do you see it do you see it um but like and and and I apologize because I know I'm blanking on lots of folks that work the swam uh Mark Cina Ryan chill sure Alan mallum who I love and I was so great to see him up at the the pig roast the other day um just so many remarkable Talent Casey Willet Ray Bachmann that that came through that place um Phil beard who now like runs the fantasy Channel down on SiriusXM and Mike papic and basically everyone that you've liked if they a Baltimore sports Personality that you've enjoyed more or less they came from there and 10 years ago that died and that sad it is sad it's not sad for me because again it became untenable and as I pointed out like it started dying before that date at that point we were we were propping it up and doing our best we we we did everything in our power you know Drew and I to try to keep it vibrant but when I when I decided to leave a great job in Arizona to take a job there it was it was the place to be it was you're wrong Coulson it was and everybody would say well look at I I can tell you all the stories of why you're wrong about what you think the listenership was in fact the listenership was insane given how no one could hear the signal uh um so it's a bummer it's a bummer thinking back on that and the way that people think back on a lot of things they're like if you weren't there you you don't know it was that special and um Rob and Jeremy and I are going to do a a thing about it tomorrow morning and I I'm not it was an incredible time an incredible place and yeah a lot of people say you can make a documentary you can make write a book there's lots of things that could be done 100% it's it really was that unique and every time you bring it up you hear from a million people that were like yep it was a special thing and it is still missed to this day so yeah 10 years ago that the old radio station died but we got lots of good things that we're a part of and grateful to be a part of it and grateful to be here at pressbox and all the other places that you hear me all right uh every week we make a trip to buoy to chat the member of the bay Sox and this week we get to catch up with last year's first round pick of the Baltimore Orioles someone that I've enjoyed our first conversation remember last year our first conversation was with him and his dad which was a lot of fun we now head down to buoy to catch up with outfielder Enrique Bradfield who's back with us now here on GCR Enrique it's Glenn and Baltimore it's great to chat with you man thank you for taking the time for us this morning hey Glenn no problem he man pleasure to come on here and talk yeah man I that was one of my favorite conversations that I've had on this show in a long time you and your dad and like the joy in his voice how much has he been able to like be around and be a part of it and and be involved with you as you've been in this first year of pro ball uh he's been a little bit busy uh this first year so honestly he's probably only made a handful of trips um couple a couple down to aine I think they were planning on coming to uh going to a and I ended up getting promoted so we hit the road for that week and that kind of shifted the plan so I'm sure they they my dad and my my mom and sister will be back soon that's cool man does he still does he like text you and give you like hey you're doing this wrong do do you still have to deal with that with Dad uh it's not no it's not as much as it used to be it's uh it's usually a good luck text before the game and then uh just in observations I I've been noticing this I don't know if this is what you're trying to do but uh this is what it looks like and I'm like yeah I got it then I got it all right let's get to the important part 63 stolen bases between the two levels this season are you starting to think that it might be possible that at some point in your career you could have a 100 stolen base season I think it's a very much a possibility I think it's it's more than a possibility in my mind I think they're are going to be a there is going to be a year and then there are going to be years where that number is uh is right there in my reach holy smokes man like that is like my my like the hairs of my arms stand up thinking about the possibility of that how much is that grounded you and andri I'm sure there are a lot of people that would press at the plate but knowing what a terror you are on the base pass has it allowed you to be more patient and and to understand a walk is a really good good thing for me like what what is that speed and what you're able to do do for you and and the patience that you have at the play I think it just allows me the the opportunity to be free um and by being free it's I can be selective as to what I'm looking for you know it's um obviously moving up to double a it's a a different different animal of a of a level and there's going to be some pitchers who really understand what they have to do and what their job is yep but at the same time too it's uh it's uncomfortable pitching to somebody that you know that hey if we put this guy on he can make us pay for it so we really have to make him try and earn his way on so I guess looking from that perspective it kind of freeze me up to try and um hunt certain pitches pitch zones certain uh plans of attack that I'm I'm looking for when I'm in the Box you know you say that but like I see that you're Ops and 00 since you've gotten CAU up it's this is supposed to be the moment where it gets real like this is supposed to be the level where you're facing major league pitching um why has the adjustment been so simplistic for you I think it's it's mostly uh it comes from just working every day yeah and just get better um I'm just I'm a completely different hitter than I was from the moment I walked into the organization last year I'm completely different from the moment the season started in April you know there been a lot of work that's gotten gotten done in the past uh past months and to to allow me to to trust my preparation to trust in the work that I've put in and just go out there and play the game what we're chatting with in R Bradfield here on gcrs make our visit to buoy can can you explain that a little bit more to me like what what did they tell you when you got in what was your focus in the fall how did you make those adjustments yeah it's uh it's mostly just sitting down and really talking with our hitting Department about what I can be and what I want to be and it's like I know the the caliber of hitter I'm going to be a guy who who gets on base a lot but I do have the potential to to do some damage as well hit the ball in the Gap double triples run into a ball and it's going to leave so it's uh it's being able to consistently do that that been working towards so it's been uh a little bit of a stance adjustment some some different uh swing focuses swing cues to get me moving in in the right way and it's just kind of been a constant build from from the time even last year in Del Mara to the off season it's just been a a constant Evolution and you know I'm excited for for what it can look like in the next year is is there I I know this is going to sound like the dumbest question of all time in R but is there any small part of you that like when you do hit a home run that you're like damn now I can't steal any bases around this time no you know I for the most part I have to Sprint my way around so it's nice to take that one off and and Jog a little bit Fair all right that's fair I can dig hey Ricky Henderson hit a bunch of home runs man like in his career um you can be a great base dealer and obviously have some power too Bradfield with us here on GCR and R the thing that obviously everybody always still continues to talk about is is the defense I I I would think like do you feel like you're already a major league caliber defensive outfielder at this point in your life in my mind 100 per. yeah that's that's without a doubt you know whether other people think that I'm not sure and I guess you'd have to ask other people but in my mind I I am that uh MLB caliber defensive outfielder already no I I can promise you there are plenty of people that share that opinion you are not alone in that the you mention obviously getting the call up um and it's not the big one but it is everybody always talks about how significant High to doua is in someone's career were you how comfortable were you with because it really was just after the one-year Mark that that the work that you put in the progress that you've made how good do you feel about hey if that was what I did in year one I am exactly on the track that I want to be in yeah I uh to be honest the feeling is mostly it's like if I knew what I know right now at the beginning of the year it's like what could my year have looked like huh but it's like I know it now so what's stopping me from continuing on and turn turning this into next year and and running with it and just going out there and being free and playing some good baseball so it's like you constantly are learning different things and some of them take months to figure out some might take a week and it's like you just have these moments where you're probably not really expecting much and something happens and you're like that's interesting let me see how this feels and that feeling might be something that could change some in your swing and and then you end up going out there and having some success and it's like okay that worked for me so it's been a lot of moments like that just small moments that I'm able to piece together and kind of put together a bigger picture with that's cool man I I we were talking to tavien last week and he was telling us about the relationship that you guys have kind of developed um as as you've come up together and you were draft picks together can you tell me a little bit like what that's been like connecting with him and and you guys having to some similarities as ball players and getting to know each other and maybe some of the competition that comes along with that and maybe who are some of the other guys that that you've connected with during your time the most connected with during this year that you've been in the system yeah tavan uh tav's been awesome you know we've lived together the entire year uh on the road in Aberdine now in Buoy we we share an apartment together so just having him around uh it's constantly good it's good to have people that you really trust around you uh we sit down we talk about baseball we talk about how our games are are developing what's changing for us so it's very exciting to to have one of your best friends here with you and you we started in Del Marva we went to Ay together and now we're in boot and I know we won't probably ever move at the same Pace again but who knows but it's also just uh it's really nice to have some of your best friends uh r RM is another guy who I've spent a lot of time with this year and he joined us up here in Buoy and uh getting to to play alongside R has been good you know he's somebody who has has seen a lot of baseball he's uh experienced a lot in his uh professional career so just being able to to have different perspectives around is amazing uh you're never you're never far from learning uh you can always choose to learn something from another player another individual so it's nice to have those guys around what about reconnecting with Pat Riley these last couple of weeks it's been really fun it's been really fun to see his growth you know from the moment that we walked in there into vanderbild as freshman yeah uh to seeing what he is right now I'm incredibly proud of pad I'm incredibly happy to to be his friend to have been his teammate at Vanderbilt to be his teammate now so I'm um I'm very excited for what he can do and what I know he will do in uh Baltimore or Jersey Enrique are you a talker on the field like are you do you jaw with guys are you like do do you like to pimp things like I I you're such a you know I try to come up with the right word for it you're so kind of reserved isn't the right word because you're a great talker right but like you're you're not demonstrative when we chat with you are you demonstrative on the baseball field uh I think at certain points I am yeah do you do you know where that came from like is that is it part of the joy it's one of my favorite things now about baseball right is that we're allowed to have a personality like grow when I'm 40 Enrique so like when I was growing up you know you were supposed to be quiet and the whole thing and my one of my favorite things is like I I hate Orioles fans hate Jose Batista man but like watching him flip that bat after he hit that home run in the playoffs a few years ago you were like dude that I have been waiting for this like that's we need this in this sport is that something that's always come natural to you like the the personality side of it yeah you know for the most part I feel like most of the time especially now that i' I've kind of matured and U I'm developing and understanding as I I move up levels how to how to act in the environment how to be a good teammate um I I pretty much have a straight face for the most part but definitely uh emotions do do come out at times and I would say it's just it's not so much joy in the moment it's more so competition yeah and that I'm a competitor yeah uh I I want to win I don't I don't go out there every night and I'm I'm not okay with losing you know no in the leagues it's it's a little different because it's it's about our our development so you have to be okay with it to a certain degree but at the same time we're we're baseball players and we've done this our entire life and and we want to win so it's like in those moments emotions come out because I'm I'm just competitive I love that I love that D we are um you know in Baltimore we're like unabashed Angel Reese fans right because she's one of ours and like when everybody some when somebody would like knock her and be like dude what that she's a competitor like that's what I want I want to see everyone my God imagine everybody was boring and just didn't care like I want to see that so bad badly so I love that man I I dig that a whole lot all right uh I want to remind every the bay Soxs are home this weekend and there's a lot of great events coming up tomorrow night sneaker Dome night uh with a specialty sneaker showcase on The Concourse plus a drink wear giveaway on Friday night there's a mystery hat giveaway um and they're playing as the buoy pit beef which I love I actually desperately want one of those of this weekend's events down there um Let me let me project this one more time Enrique Before I Let You Go one year from now you you'll be you will be happy with how things are going if if you're where one year from today you know I don't I don't necessarily like putting a a time Mark or a time period for me to achieve a certain thing but I feel like one one year from now I'd be happy if I was in in Norfolk or or the big leagues yeah no I appreciate that I feel like that's that's something that's realistic and you know you you shoot for you shoot for the stars you know you might miss and maybe hit the moon or something I don't know Imagine Next Year helping a team try to win a World Series that's we like the sounds of that uh Enrique Bradfield man uh it's a joy to watch you play and continue to see all of the success that you're having I want to remind everybody it's e Bradfield 20 on Twitter correct yes and what about on Instagram on Instagram is just Enrique Bradfield Enrique Bradfield uh dude I I am like I am counting down the days to us putting like I'm imagining in Baltimore a couple years from now having like big numbers on the warehouse counting stolen bases to a 100 countdown for the season uh I can't wait it it really does the feeling of that is electric thank you for taking the time for us as always man really appreciate you hopping on and doing this with us this morning no thank you I appreciate it Enrique Bradfield with us here on GCR could you imagine could you imagine that dude being in the bigs being in Baltimore and threatening like a 100 stolen base season and how Bonkers that would be oh man that would be cool that would be so cool what do you want to say Sandy my seven-year-old has been itching he he feels like it was an mem situation earlier like he only got one shot and he vomited down his spaghetti the whole thing so now he's like can I have another chance to to say something what do you have did you prepare something no no did not prepare anything I don't know I'm going to say you uh what should I say what do you think do you think the Ravens are going to be good this year you excited about the Ravens yeah yeah but you didn't want to go to the game when I offered you the tickets two weeks ago well I did want to stay home yeah well that's I did I did want to stay that's this is what this is what I deal with and Graham said I'm gun wait Gunner Henderson wasn't hitting home runs mostly you know it's been a tough couple of weeks ago we need we need a little few more home runs from Gunner Henderson that is a good point hit a few last week but he's got that going for and the Nintendo died so so Sam is not necessarily like he's he likes sports but not quite as much as his brother does his brother's he's uh our Chef Sam is the chef in our family what's your favorite what do you love to cook Sam what do you like cooking the most you know tell me spaghetti we love making spaghetti we love making got to talk into the microphone buddy yeah into the microphone so once um when my brother was in the hospital um we went to my dad's store we got spaghet D noodles but then we just went to a thing and we pressed the two buttons and it made us get gummy bears and I made spaghetti and then I ate noodles out of the pot yeah that was a weird bit we made spaghetti one night when it was just salmon ey at home he had he had a bowl of spaghetti but he preferred to just eat plain noodles he would just pull plain noodles out out of the pot and like dribble them into his mouth and a very strange also so when I was almost spetti every time I had more noodles more sauce and more cheese and I kept doing that until I couldn't eat all of it but you make good meatballs pal I don't know why we didn't make meatballs that night you didn't want them but like you make I don't want meat and then guess he's a vegetarian okay I don't know andit that I have one Oreo and um another Oreo with a gummy bear oh yeah he stuffed a gummy bear and he took the top of the Oreo off I don't know if he maybe discovered something put a gummy bear and then put the top back on how was it actually pretty good it was actually pretty good okay might be on to something I like we after that we went up to our attic we let we let Sam uh try to be a food influencer we let him make some videos right and he had a catchphrase which was like hi my friends can you tell can you say that for me hi my friends yeah I think that one's going to work snacks with Sam we'll work on that we'll work on that moving forward but he likes to cook he's our uh what was your favorite thing you did at cooking camp this summer he went to two different cooking camps wow I don't know who's paying for all this sure as hell ain't me cupcake camp and cooking camp no you got to talk into the microphone Sam you can't just spin around taking headphones with yeah right oh we got a bigger problem oh no oh no there he goes now you can hear us what was your favorite thing what was your between between cooking camp and cupcake Camp what was your favorite thing that you made Sam then then real quick real quick buddy um it was probably my strawberry ice cream Mountain cupcake strawberry ice cream Mountain cupcake what what we we we sent you to camp for that so um okay here's the weird thing okay quick be honest now yeah yeah it was a whipped cream mhm with strawberries in it yeah and a cupcake I mean a muffin and then I put the whipped cream with strawberries on it filled it up then in the middle was Vanilla Wafers whoa and then um on the and I made a different one this one was banana whipped cream cupcake I mean it was the same thing just with um bananas instead of strawberries okay bananas instead of strawber ss BL all right they actually really good I brought some home okay bring some today yeah right yeah he I never I I don't eat the cupcakes cup he knows better than to bring cupcakes back so this was on our last day and um there there was a competition into the microphone buddy it was a competition so it was who can make the best um cupcake for the judge oo and who won did you three tables and were you one of them yeah hey well done well done our um one was themed off of our table name I named our table what was your table name the Rockets the Rockets So what was the how would you make a rocket cupcake no it's called Roco cake Roco cake it's a rocket on a cupcake so you take marshmallows and and then well we were a little dumb we dispayed the rules he was a little dumb he said um so we dispayed the rules we put chocolate syrup in um our filling and Van better not disobey the rules at home you're going to get your butt kicked and then stop interrupting him sorry he took a fork drew it a hole in the um cupcake it was chocolate this time and um then okay that we took the filling and filled it up and then we took two marshmallows we stuck the first there's so much happening here and then we and um stuck it on the first marshmallow and then we stuck the second one on it and then we put crumbled up vanilla wafers fire and then two marshmallows were the rocket you can get hired Grant pson all right uh so yeah hit me up Glen clar radio gmail.com have a great Thursday night go Birds Duke sucks Sam do you want to say the say the thing bye-bye my friendly friends there you go we wrap up today's show here's Jake funk he's getting ready for trying to make the team in Detroit we've been making trips around the various NFL Training Camps this summer to catch up with some folks that we know well and this is a guy that we've always enjoyed chatting with over the years it's bittersweet because we actually got to have him in Baltimore last year which was so cool but now he's out in Detroit with the Lions he is of course former turp and the man who yeah ran for seven touchdowns once at MNT Bank Stadium with the Damascus he's Jake Funk and he's back with us now on GCR Jake what's going on brother how are you good cannot complain man apprciate you me onl it's always good to talk to you dude I I am it hurts me because that was so I I I I hope you know how much it meant to me to have you in Baltimore for a minute last year it was like my favorite thing ever so it pains me that they didn't get to stay that way um Jake I remember when we talked then like we you were really open about you know being able to keep doing this and everything you've been through and the constant grind and here you are in another new place this season how do you keep the mindset of like loving it and and being willing to do the work necessary at this point to in order to just continue your career um I mean it's definitely a mental toll um for sure I mean I would say that you know Bounce Around um especially last year um but I mean every year is a fresh year and that's how I kind of look at it um every year you know that you're able to be in an NFL training camp it's another opportunity to show an organization what you can bring to the table um and that's kind of what keeps me going is that every year is a fresh start in the NFL do do you find yourself like truly believing like the best is still yet to come like that it's it's not just that you're clinging it's that any opportunity be the moment that you show the best that you're going to have to show in the league yeah of course you always have to have that that's what drives you the moment you lose that is when you know things could start going downhill for you so I I would agree I think that's definitely something that keeps you going Jake you um obviously you're out there in Detroit I I think the Lions sort of became like America's Sweethearts a couple years ago and even folks here that like you know it's sayy it's the NFC I might kind of cheat a little bit and like have an NFC team that I like what is the experience like Dan Campbell just seems like the most easily likable coach in the entire league based on his Persona what has the experience been like there for you is it as real as we think it is yeah I I think it is very real um being in this building there's a lot of energy you know for the first time in a long time for the Lions you know they're considered one of the top tier teams in the league and with that there are a lot of expectations and I think every single day in this building those expectations are um brought in and everybody's bought into to them and there's a goal within this organization is to win the Super Bowl and every single day it's the expectation that we're coming in and we're competing for a Super Bowl every single day he is Jake Funk he's now with the Detroit Lions he's with us here on GCR Jake the role that you play in that right because I know the first role is I got to make the team right like I understand how that works do you allow your s to start having those visions of like I could win a Super Bowl or is that too do you have to keep it more comp compartmentalized than that yeah I mean I would say that that's obviously the down the line goal for the organization but it starts every single day and being where your feet are um it's attacking every single day and getting just a little bit better every single day by the time you know you hit week one and then it's getting marginally better every single week and then the playoffs roll around you should be playing at your Peak so I would say it's just taking it day by day in this organization and and really attacking every single day that we're out on the grass I want to make sure I show respect winning another Super Bowl I just want to make sure that I say that correctly not winning one Super Bowl um Jake a couple things I wanted to make sure I covered with you this time around I I know you've always been a special teams guy what has your experience been like with the new kickoff I don't know if you've been involved with that uh in what you've been doing and and how how crazy is it does everybody have it figured out yet or do we still have a lot to learn about what this is going to be like this season yeah I think there's still a lot to learn um it's definitely something that's a lot different um it's a lot more short area quickness kind of thing versus long speed and you know a longer play I guess you could call it is it leverage though or is it is it really quickness it it's really like quickness off the line of scrimmage and trying to be able to leverage the ball wherever it is kicked um and I still think it's something that as the season goes on you're going to continue to learn and be able to adapt to see what works and what doesn't work it you know it's new so all the players are getting adjusted to it all the coaches are getting adjusted to it and it's just something that I think you're going to have to continuously be able to learn and adapt to be able to really figure out what works best for you and your team are we at a place where players could say whether or not you guys like it or it's still too new just no way to I mean I I think it's a collaborative effort um at the end of the day it's you know whatever the coaches feel what is best but I I do think it is a collaborative effort to you know whether guys you know like this certain style or this or that um but at the end of the day it's it's a learning thing for all of us and you know we just try to you know watch the tape and figure out okay does this work and try different things and and you know figuring out what kind of pieces can go where and how to be able to um really get a great kickoff and kick return unit you know Jake you are only in your fourth year right in the league but obviously considering you you were at Maryland for a little bit longer because of everything that you went through there like take me back how different are you today than even just like when you showed up as a freshman in college park years back I I mean football-wise I've learned a lot yeah uh there's a lot about the game that when you come from high school to college there's a mental jump and then when you come from college to the NFL there is even another mental jump and you know you learn so much about the game and how to play it and and the NFL is I would consider a very different game than the college level um so you know being able to be four years in you you know you you've been playing at this level for a a little bit and you know you start to understand and you start to see what um how the nuances of the NFL work and uh that's something that I've been able to grow um in terms of just mentally over the years um and it was the same thing at Maryland you know I came in as a freshman and you know you're new to the college game and as you get older and as you grow throughout the program you're able to you know find out all right this is you know the nuances of college football and you know there's a growing process and I think that's you know very normal having gone through as much as You' gone through and I think people are familiar with the injury history from college even at a young age do you find yourself being more of like a sage type when you're in a locker room do you find yourself being a guy who is more inclined to give advice to try to help young guys because you've been through probably a good bit more than the average guy at this point in their career has I mean yeah I I tried to um you know if my advice is warranted here and there um obviously I've been through a lot from an injury standpoint so when guys get injured I can understand what it is like mentally and physically um so I'm able to you know be able to bond with guys over that um but yeah I would totally agree married life any I mean any different at all I mean I I enjoyed getting to know I think as I told you the last time we talked I was not I'm not I'm not like a a reality TV guy it's not my thing so I love the story of how you all met you got married this off seon when I got married everybody kept asking like what's it like I'm like I don't know it's no different to me than it was three days ago it only got different once kids came along any different for you whatsoever I wouldn't say you know that at all um you know we we had been you know pretty close and from you know the day we started dating and really I mean we got married and all the only thing that's been new is just having to wear a ring on my finger which I've never to do in my life so getting getting used to that was when I tell you that I told my then fiance my my now wife for 10 years I would be more inclined to get a tattoo of a ring on my finger I'm like this is not about me trying to lie about being married I will get i'll tattoo on my finger I'm married so that like everyone knows it's just so foreign to me the concept of wearing a ring now obviously 10 years in I feel F quite different about it but at the time I'm like this crazy to me the idea of wearing a ring every day yeah so I I went with the old rubber one just just because it was a little bit more comfortable for day-to-day use um obviously I have I have another ring that I wore for our actual wedding day but for day-to-day use I just go with a rubber one the the attention that has come like the the paparazzi coverage like is that how weird has that been for you like did you get used to it at some point is it still weird to you um I mean it's not I've gotten used to it over the years um at first it was a little different uh but you know with that I I knew that going into you know getting into a relationship with Hannah with that you know that kind of stuff could come up um but over the years I I don't really you know it's I'm kind of used to it at this point do you have a preference for who Maryland starts a quarterback against Yukon in two weeks I really don't I just hope they put the best player out on the field I understand that feeling I know we've talked a lot about like the last couple of years and the direction and the progress and it it does feel like it makes a difference that they don't have to go up against like Ohio State and Michigan and Penn State in the same division moving forward like it feels like there could be a real chance to take a step towards I don't want to go crazy and say like winning the Big 10 but like something even more significant in the coming years yeah and you know from what I've heard the defense has been great um throughout training camp and the dline they're like freaks man like they are yeah from what from what I've heard and it's a very different team than I guess a lot of Maryland teams have been in the past which has been very offensive dominated yep um so and then you know obviously you know figuring out who the quarterback is that's going to be a big piece and about how the team and the direction of the team but I you know obviously I'm excited uh I'm excited to see what coach locks and all of them dial up for the year and um you know excited to root on the turs we're excited for you man um again bummed that it's not man that would have been so great for us if it stayed in Baltimore forever but uh you know wherever you're going to be as long as it's not Pittsburgh like you just understand as long as it's not that we are rooting for you and we will forever be happy for you and hoping you find success man uh at Jake Punk 34 on Twitter remind me where it is on Instagram same thing j Punk 34 Jake go out there make us proud continue to make us proud always appreciate taking the time for us thanks so much appreciate you Glen
