Postgame Interview Jerod Mayo reveals who won Patriots starting QB competition Drake Maye in QB1 NFL

but it's time to go and hopefully we're all on the same page going forward earlier in the week about some guys we're going to play we're not going to play depending on help what what inion you play some of the guys who might be more starters tonight uh we just played the guys that we thought needed to have more live uh live action and and that's the way we approached it was the plan for jacobe to just play the first series or was that as a result no that was that was the plan we were going to play jacobe a series or two and and get Drake in would he have been able to play he would have been able to continue what's his health status right now he I talked to him look we'll see tomorrow you always feel a little bit more sore the next day but he said he was good um we'll we'll uh we'll find out tomorrow how concerned are you about the offensive line T I think it is a concern I think the the biggest concern for me it's not the ex and no of what to do it's just the lack of discipline that they showed today uh and that's on that's on all of us that's on me it starts with me I got to be more uh diligent and getting on those guys about pre- snap penalties and the rest of the coaches have to do the same thing but the players also have to take uh responsibility for those pre- snap penalties look the referees they did a good job they warned us multiple times um we talked then we got flagged and they just kept on the flag because we didn't adjust and one thing you know I've learned around here is we'll do business as business is being done and if you see them calling those type of plays you got to self-correct and and get better so we just didn't do that tonight I feel like the offensive line has been a talking point for our training camp why do you think there's been a lot more progress at you know I mean look it's I I tell the guys all the all the time every single day we just have to get better obviously we have to jail as a unit uh that's one of those units where you got to be close on the field and off the field and build that trust and it's a process that we're we're continue to go through heading into tonight's game you had mentioned that you expected to have a decision on the starting quarterback decision uh competition made by tomorrow night is that still yeah yeah you know look I mean that's always the goal um and as I always say I reserve the right to change my mind uh and saying that look we gotta watch the film we get in at three o'clock in the morning so uh we'll see we'll see if I can get through all the film on the plan sorry about that one of the starters you didn't see time was pop Douglas you play have a lot of snaps that by Design you said those guys before action yeah it was by Design once again guys that need live action same thing with Marcus Jones getting them out there guys that need live action that that was the mentality going into the game and uh I was happy to see him out there with jobi suffering an injury tonight I think it just raises the possibility that if he's the starter week one that could happen the regular season would Drake make play if Jacob's unavailable uh I would like to sit here and say 100% he's our second best quarterback on our roster right now that yes or next question I'm not sure I'm not sure until I until I watch the film are you concerned about the offensive line if you had to put Drake in you know in that look I'm not concerned about the well look I'm concerned about every position and I would say Elliot and myself and the rest of the staff our job is to always is you know look for better players we'll be very active on the waiver wire there'll be some good football players out there on the street and look we'll try to get this team better out to you about Drake's performance tonight sorry what stood out to you about Drake's performance yeah I think he showed great Poise he went out there you know his quarterback rating was like 100 or something like that um he made plays he L like he was in control of the offense and did a good job for us speaking on the offensive line he saw City so go out he questionable Dow out you have update on his uh I don't have an update um he'll get an MRI at some point tomorrow you being a little serious I'm not sure I wish I could tell you I'm just not sure with the line's performance impact your decision on when to play Drake man which concern about playing behind the line we we always say look the best players are going to play no matter if it's a quarterback or an offensive line it doesn't matter we're going to play the best players how frustra was it so I after a series I think go over to the offensive line after one had the illegal formation you seem like you were demon pretty much pointing it out and then happened right again how frustrating was that yeah it's very frustrating and and once again you know it starts with me um I just got to get on those guys more and practice about some of that stuff the I think the most frustrating part was after you've been told that you have to move up that they continue to line up the same way um I would say some of those calls I mean I don't know but you know you look at the pictures and we were we were uh definitely deep you guys were told specifically about the illegal pointal well the point of emphasis they always give you a warning like the tackles are too far back and things like that and we had those warnings and we didn't take heat and they threw the flag is the is the rule of thumb on that if the tackle's head is they line up they line up off of the guards and then I would also say depending on you know who's out there refering they all see it a little bit different once again the most frustrating part was this is how they're calling this is how they're calling your alignment let's make those adjustments aside from the decision how gratifying has it been to see breake make it tough on you oh it's been great you know once again just his overall steadiness and being able to come in work every single day and get better uh it's been great to see did you have um anyen of anything going on with his hand just looked like he was kind of looking down at his hands every once while Dr uh I'm not sure I didn't I didn't see that practices and three preseason games how confident are you now going forward starts up two weeks from now real get your team ready for since yeah look we'll be ready to go we're going to go into a hostile environment um we have things to work on we're going to watch this film we'll grade the film we'll make roster moves and decisions as we see fit uh and we're going to try to put the best New England Patriots team we can uh against Cy thanks guys thank you lock room is open here's the do out [Music] just what was that like for you kind of taking another step forward it looked like tonight uh when you got out there yeah um you know I think it felt good being out there I think the biggest thing is just just hurting ourselves offensively um stalling drives with penalties and um I got to get us out of the Huddle probably faster um other than that um had a snap on the ground um little things like that um got to clean up but at the same time it's a good learning experience for us and uh get ready for you know when things sir you're you'll start counting so kind of wowed all with that play that I call back unfortunately on that penalty take us through that play when you hit KJ yeah U I think they went Cloud we kind a high low concept to the left I was trying to work backside and end up um getting outside the pocket and I think it would have been close if I passed the line it was definitely real close I'm not sure what TV copy looked like but uh um yeah KJ just making a play and um bummer got called back but just same thing you know hurting ourselves and in a two-minute Drive can't do that that first drive you got in the game right down the field for a touchdown what was working for you guys feel like on that yeah um I think the guys are just doing their jobs I think that's the biggest thing executing executing plays that we practice all week um you know Finding guys my job is to get the ball to them and um you know just you know again you know backed up and we had a snap um you know low snap and probably should have caught it and uh just I think we were second and 18 from there just can't you know shoot ourselves in the foot you know little things like that um get a good football team um you know like like we got lucky tonight so just got to start better how much different do you feel you are now as opposed to when this training camp started yeah I think it's uh you I think it's an awesome training camp uh not only is get to our defense but it mix in other defenses and going out there and playing and you know feeling like getting hit I think uh think we're getting there I think it's been fun out there with some of the Rooks you know JP Madeon plays tonight I'm sitting over there in the corner um just get some of the rookies together and um you know fin Laden was in at Right Guard kind of kind of Ming kind of finding our groove so uh you know it's been it's awesome camping you know it's been it's been tough too you know our rookie season's been long we've been going at it you know since four drafts so uh just looking forward to you know getting to see what the NFL season like Jak looks like you got jostled a couple times coming away from Center you got stepped on one time yeah can can you tell us what was happening yeah I'm just trying to secure the snap I got to get out of there um but also I think the big dude uh that nose tackle I think 91 was number um he's a good player so got get out of there faster and you know Nick's doing you he of job fighting in there so uh get away from center with the fumbled snap what's the issue on that yeah um I I just think you know it's um you know when you practice you know pregame and over on the side it's a little different than when somebody's up there right against you so uh we figured something out and I think on the sideline after that first drive and and from there on we we were just kind of it felt good so Drake on Jil and just what did you see there on that play yeah uh I just had a high low Crossing concept um you know JP did a nice job weaving through traffic and um you to try to get him a good ball and and catch him run from there so so I think he does a nice job um you know mixing up different spots with JP you know playing outside inside um we inside at night and does a good job of getting open so my job is to get him the Rock and let him do his thing would you feel ready to play week one you were asking yeah yeah I think I would feel ready um I think I'm you know ready for whatever this football team asked to me and ready to get out there and uh try to help us be the Bengals week one you mentioned getting in and out of the how much do you think you improve in terms of operation command and the hle yeah I think you know command and the huddle is you know a huge thing for quarterback I think I'm getting there um you know kind of trying to improve every week I think you know one thing on the side one offline said I just go in there and speak real fast I kind of do hear media too uh just got to slow down sometimes um just hearing the play and kind of you know look around and and like I said a little command of the Huddle but other than that I feel like have my eyes on the play clock well and just kind of you know hurrying guys up to try to get some playoff 20 game practices preseason games kind of what have you learned now basically as you get ready yeah uh biggest thing playing probably learn is just you know just next play mentality you know you take you know where it's a good play Bad play um play you you wish you had back you know had a few of those tonight let's move on to the next play It's the next play um you know type League it's next week type League you know in this in the NFL is what I'm learning and U you know other than that just enjoy it you know have fun you know it's it's sad you know but the reality is some of these guys especially these rookies are going to be gone uh you know come next week and just enjoy those days you know with those guys you you creating great memories and enjoy the times out here with with with with the Fells we were talking to earlier last week he mentioned just pre-nap like the tools at your disposal especially to handle like pressure and things like that how do you feel like you've come along in that area yeah I think it's huge in this offense um you know especially when we're not out here and preseason with some vanilla looks you know especially pressure wise um you know f a smart kid that can you know did a lot of you protection stuff in college me and my C was all on us protection wise and um I thought we did a good job now having Free Runners you know back there but it's a different kind of League here now um they try to schem me up so um yeah definitely the tools different tools to protect myself and really protect the offense um feel I'm getting there I've done you know a few of them in practice um so try working through them and see different looks each week so thank you Drake may very thoughtful press conference as the rookie continues to learn how to navigate through the NFL players he's going up against and also the media circus now between May and brette we look at the preseason May's had more opportunities right he's got 10 drives to jacobe Bret six 62 completion percentage to just 36% 192 passing yards two TDS and 86.9 pass rating compared to this 14.64% but again more opportunities for May and what he's doing with those
