that smokiness so good I hope you're joining me with your cup of tea maybe a cup of coffee hanging out talking Tech talking photo talking video today is a technology day today I want to talk to you a little bit about AT&T and the outage that just occurred a couple of days ago and is there a way that SpaceX darling can actually replace a Telco a wireless Telco like AT&T I don't know about the ground infrastructure of let's say fiber but everything else let's say those cell towers is it a possibility what are your thoughts on this I'll give you my commentary matter of fact I'm going to read to you an article that I found from a BC News I believe it was I've read one over on Reuters on time all kinds of places there was a ton of people talking about this outage now this outage actually I experienced while traveling to Texas so we were in the airport when everything was down and I want to talk to you about this also the idea here that we are very Reliant very reliant on Cell basically on technology in general is a major problem and I think AT&T customers like myself have now experienced the warning of what happens when a cell network goes down now I'm going to dig in a little bit deeper in this video because I'm going to come to you as a system administrator and let you know what I think about all this and I'm also going to give you some information some Insider information of what I've heard from AT&T individuals once again from the inside now let me read to you some of this article and then once again I'll get into some commentary before I do I just want to say if you customers in the US Thursday was caused by a software update the company said I'll get into that in just a second AT&T told ABC News in a statement that the outage was not a Cyber attack but was caused by quote the application and execution of an incorrect process used as we were expanding our Network I love it I love it quote We are continuing our assessment of today's outage to ensure we keep delivering this service that our customers deserve thank you AT&T you're awesome the software update went wrong according to preliminary information from some inside source is familiar with the situation sources have told ABC news ATT Update that there was nothing nefarious or malicious about the incident the outage was not caused by an external actor according to a source familiar with the situation AT&T performs updates regularly according to that Source in an earlier statement to ABC News AT&T said that some customers were experiencing wireless service interruptions and advise them to make calls over WiFi yeah the company issued an update later Thursday afternoon saying that the network had been fully restored just so you get a point of reference here the service went down right around 4:00 a.m. and was down until 300 p.m. 11 hours all right guys it was 11 hours quote we have restored wireless service to all of our affected customers all our customers we sincerely apologize to them keeping our customers connected remains our top priority and we are taking steps to ensure our customers do not experience this again in the future this is what the company said on a statement on X two sources briefed on What Happened the situation told ABC news that the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security or DHS among other agencies had been urgently investigating to determine whether the AT&T outage was a result of a Cyber attack or a hack or simply some sort of technical malire function as of 500 a.m. eastern standard time the US cyber security and infrastructure Security Agency or the cisa reported quote the cause of the outage is unknown and there is no indication of malicious activity now if you guys don't know the cisa is an agency underneath the or within the DHS which is the Department of Homeland Security and they monitor cyber attacks any type of cyber threats is what what they do the FCC has been in touch with AT&T to figure out what caused the outage according to the National Security communication advisor John Kirby Kirby told reporters Thursday afternoon that the DHS and the FBI were looking into the outage as well as working with the technology industry and network providers to see what can be done quote the bottom line is we do not have answers as of yet he said we are working very hard to see if we can get to the ground ground truth of exactly what happened you'll never get to that ground truth sorry Kirby several police departments and municipalities warned local residents of what they described as a nationwide outage in turn officials urged callers to contact emergency services by alternative means quote there is a nationwide AT&T outage that is preventing Wireless customers from making and receiving any phone calls including 911 this is what the Charlotte North Carolina Police Department said on an X poost in response to an earlier request from ABC News the cisa said that they had no comment on the outage AT&T serves more than 290 million customers across mobile and Broadband Services according to the company's website Verizon and T-Mobile told ABC news that their respective networks are not experiencing outages but customers May may experience difficulty when contacting individuals affected by the outage at other providers basically if you're on a T-Mobile account or maybe a Verizon account and you're trying to call a family member that's on AT&T and you can't get through well it is not T-Mobile and it is not Verizon they don't have a network issue it's only AT&T so what gets affected when something like this happens and I made a list here because I think that is really interesting and I a lot of people don't think about this now of course we talk about 911 calls right and we see a lot of police departments and states and municipalities and so on and so forth saying listen if you need a dial 911 and you're on AT&T don't do it because you're not going to get through use a landline or use another means use Wi-Fi or something that's if you have service if you have another means of service and not just AT&T remember AT&T is trying to get rid of all copper I talked to you guys about this a while back they've been trying to replace DSL as well as users with that AT&T what is it home air they call it it's a means of connecting homes but through the cell towers instead of having copper in the ground they're trying to get rid of the copper guys no more landlines no more picking up the phone picking up the phone and calling someone there's some folks out there watching me right now that have not a clue what a landline is they think that this is like the only means of communication yeah no there was this device this phone thing that you would pick up and you would hear this sound that sounded something like a and then you would dial your digits and then place a phone call yeah that's the way it used to be now obviously everyone's using these but now when these go down what happens they're telling you for in case of emergency use a landline or use some type of Wi-Fi yeah anyways you have also medical alert systems that wouldn't be working if you only have AT&T in your home or maybe your home security no longer works or voice calling text messaging SMS MMS multimedia messaging anything like that you're not going to be able to communicate with your family members or an emergency call of any kind you're not going to be able to place also how about your ewallet how many people are using Wallet Issues Apple pay or Google pay or some other type of virtual means of paying for stuff well when your AT&T is down and you have Apple pay and you try going and clicking and bleeping it to try to buy something guess what you're not buying nothing that's it guess how much money you have in your wallet your ewallet zero nothing so if you're not carrying an actual wallet that has some green backs in it you're not going to be able to buy nothing do nothing yeah once again no purchases at all also you have navigational issues if you're using Google Maps or if you're using Apple Maps guess what you're on AT&T there is none you cannot use it for any type of GPS or getting from point A to point B matter of fact when we were at the airport that was one of the problems number one people weren't able to call Uber or lift because their phones weren't working number two Uber andyt weren't working either because GPS was down for the majority of the cars that was an issue right so you cannot even get a ride share when your phone isn't working that's an issue ride share also of course you have no social media so you're not going to be able to get any type of messaging as far as what is going on out there in the world you're going to have to ask other people what's up I'm down are you down what's wrong with your phone people were scrambling all over the airport they're like looking they're going outside and I'm actually telling people because I found out that it was actually an outage and I was telling people hey if you have AT&T your phone is down they're like what do you mean I'm like yeah your AT&T is down completely it's been down for hours don't bother rebooting people are rebooting and trying to do all kinds of stuff shut their Network down turn their Network back on it still says SOS and that is it also you're not going to be able to call your loved ones right so you have no communication with them so what is going on with them if there is some type of emergency you're not going to know about it at all you're not going to have any means of communication so I think that this is very interesting that this happened and that they state that it is some type of software update malfunction why do I say this well I have been an administrator I know Unix inside and out I've been a system administrator for many decades I've worked on racks at colos at Knox at Network operation centers at the cosos at the central offices for many many many years matter of fact I worked on a rack right next to Bell Atlantic's rack and I knew the system administrator there for many many years and I got a lot of Insider Knowledge from it but that being said all rollouts happen at 2 or 3 a.m. and we see that this outage happened at 4:00 a.m. that makes sense but and this is the big butt here guys every roll out every major roll out I don't care if you're a small business if you're a bank or if you're a major service provider rollouts happen not only in the middle of the morning 3 a.m. usually but also they happen beforehand in a sandbox what the hell is a Sandbox some place where a kid plays no it's a place where Tech heads like me play so we go and in roduce software patches in a sandbox to test them weeks prior to going live days prior to going live and then finally hours prior to going live and then when we do go live like AT&T here you would go live incrementally you start out on one side of the coast and you work your way to the other so if you're going live at 3:00 a.m. eastern standard time well you're also going to go live in Central Time as well as mountain time and then finally in Pacific time at 3:00 a.m. what does that mean just think about it logically that means if we go live with a patch in New York or in Florida where I am at 3:00 a.m. that same live patch will happen 4 hours later in Pacific time uh in California all right so they have 4 hours to know that this software update was SC screwed are you following me here so there's no way to have a nationwide outage if it's just done at 3:00 a.m. throughout the entire country so it just makes it very hard for me to Fathom that this actually went down and this wasn't something malicious from the inside or outside because there is no system administrator worth their weight and salt that would actually execute any type of update throughout the entire country at one time at 3:00 a.m. or here at 4:00 a.m. and render the entire United States blacked out for 11 hours 11 hours guys 11 hours it was 400 p.m. the next day when things got fixed it's ridiculous and now we hear from AT&T look we appreciate your business I got that on my phone we appreciate your business and we're going to give every one of you $5 I'm not kidding this is a god honest truth we're going to give every one of you $5 we apologize are you kidding me five bucks anyways even if this wasn't Technology is on the cusp nefarious and it did happen and someone just literally lost their mind when they rolled out this update let's just say I think that at least at least least us customers of AT&T understand how shites the company is number one number two even if that's not the case you should understand that technology is just on the cusp of breaking all the time and that if technology goes down you lose everything you cannot speak to your loved ones you cannot dial 911 you have no money to your name nothing I think that it is so Mission critical that people have a wallet and have some greenbacks in those wallets right because if something does happen at least you have some money to be able to spend now if it was for our government today they want to remove greenbacks completely they don't want you to be able to use cash God forbid they want you to only use Virtual currency so when hits the fan guess what you have nothing you have zero not only can you not communicate with your loved ones but you have no money anyways you can't even buy gas zip a couple of years ago I did something and this was kind of at the height of the pandemic and I said you know if really hits the fan what will we do as a family how do we get together how do we find each other let's say if all the networks go dark okay and now there is no GPS right there's no lines of communication you can't text your loved one you can't call your loved one what do you do do you have a plan in place I think you should Have a plan have one because what I did is I said you know what we need to have a hard copy map how to get from point A to point B so that the entire family will be able to meet in a centralized location because once again if hits the fan you want to get all of your family members together maybe they are only 100 or 200 miles away they can get into a car and make it to your location once again that Central Hub so what we did is we printed up a map so we have a map and an alternative map too because maybe one map is not going to work because everyone is going down that route have one map and then an alternative map so everyone can get to that one centralized location once again if all she gets the fan I think that that's very important once again as we see GPS is down you don't have Google Maps you don't have Apple Maps you don't have this type of means of getting from point A to point B and there's no phone calling there's no emergency phone calling there's no nothing but luckily AT&T gave everyone five bucks okay so I'm very happy about that so coming full circle can starlink replace AT&T I've said this many many times in the past from the very beginning and I said you know what not only can SpaceX replace the internet with a internet let's say in low earth orbit have a version two internet an internet 2 they can also replace Telos maybe not the fiber on the ground possibly but maybe not the fiber on the ground but all cell towers because because if you think about this if you have like maybe something this big a little antenna outside of your home when we see Elon Musk SpaceX now being able to make text messages from space using your unmodified phone and eventually be able to make phone calls as well as video calls with a satellite with no service no Wi-Fi and no cell service just right from a satellite using your phone that means that you'll be able to put something this big on your roof and now have that signal that you would get outside with your phone on the inside and you'll be able to make phone calls emergency phone calls right from your phone not just SOS but actually calls think about that think about that the same thing holds true with something this big on your car remember we had Car Satellites companies like Cirrus right Sirus XM whereas in your car you can receive a satellite radio and all this crap I got this garbage in my car I can't shut the damn thing off it's like if I leased the car or something like if I didn't own it but it still advertises to me all the time that's for another video anyways remember those little antennas right put a little antenna on there now you get serus right well imagine antenna flat this big you stick it on the top of your car boom you have SpaceX starlink just like that that's going to happen when we see 40,000 satellites in low earth orbit no matter where that car is or no matter where your house house is no matter if you can just see just a little glimpse of the sky at that point you're going to be fine even if you're in the woods as long as you can see a little bit of the sky you're going to be fine you're going to have the ability to have emergency communication I think that these Wireless providers really need to be fearful of SpaceX starlink that's my personal opinion right now we see starlinks when be working with T-Mobile to do back hauling and all of this stuff but the question is do they really need them does Starling need T-Mobile I mean maybe for right now but down the road I don't know I really don't know guys I want to know from you what do you guys do to prepare now this isn't like prepper type of stuff you know you wear a seat belt not to be a prepper right it just makes damn good sense right you have a fire extinguisher next to your stove why well in case of a fire that doesn't mean that you're a prepper that just makes sense what do you you do for preparations if any type of Technology like this goes dark and you no longer have the means of communication you no longer have funds you don't have an ewallet anymore it doesn't exist what do you do are you preparing for stuff like that because I think we all should and I think that this AT&T deal is a wakeup call once again it doesn't matter to me if it really was something nefarious if it was something from an external source that was hacking AT&T I really don't care it just proves how crappy their service is it just proves how stupid they are internally it just proves that their system administrators not quite together but it does help us to once again realize and to step back for a second and say you know what we need to make some type of preparations if things did happen where everything goes dark where we don't have Verizon and we don't have T-Mobile as a backup we don't have a wifi means to communicate with 911 how does that happen well probably the guy next door that has a shortwave radio or some type of ham operator is going to be the only means of emergency communication at that point right now I'm not telling you guys that you need to go and become a ham operator or have some type of shortwave radio and an 80ft antenna outside I'm not saying that I'm just saying that maybe we need to pause for a moment and think about what we are doing with technology and always have some type of backup anyways down below I want to hear from you what are you doing in case of a blackout some type of Nationwide Wireless outage what are you doing do you have a plan do you have a means to get your family together in case that there is no means of communication do you have that plan what are you doing also do you think that SpaceX Starling could take over AT&T as a wireless provider let's not call it Wireless let's just call it maybe satellite provider is that a possibility I personally think that it is is it a possibility today no but within a couple of years I think AT&T and the rest of the Telos they really should be shaking in their boots they don't understand the power of Elon Musk SpaceX starlink I don't think they get it yet they don't grasp the power of having a mesh Network in low earth orbit of 40 plus thousand satellites they don't get that they don't see it as of yet but they will they will see it because it's coming and it's coming quick so anyways guys I want to hear from you what do you think down below let's have this conversation am I crazy am I not what do you think do you
