Jim Harbaugh On Week 1 Win vs Raiders | LA Chargers

uh what was uh your reaction to takeaways after watching the film from yesterday I mean uh a lot um and uh lot uh lot of good lot of lot of great and um you know to get the win I mean it's huge plus uh plus to have room for improvement and things to things to work on that's that's a great place to be stay pretty healthy in the game and uh you know put some really good things on tape did you but most important got the win you know division opponent that's uh that's huge uh it's almost like winning twice and winning twice is really nice I know you mentioned Joy yesterday stood out to you did did you uh when you look back and watch it he was someone who talked to us at least about you know wanting to prove you know that to himself that he was still that player you know yesterday were how impressed were you with what you saw and when you watched it again yeah I think it's a great way to say it he's that player uh saw it in in the production in the tackles in the in the hustle in the um I me he was he was great against the run and uh unblockable in the pass a huge game as far as the effort from him obviously like you know he gets home for a sack and couple pressures but chasing down white for a fumble a couple of those third Downs where he's tracking down Gardner mshu on on those third down scrambles like what' you like about the effort from from Joey well love that and two of them two of them were QB scrambles two of the tackles were QB scrambles I mean to not let th that play get extended uh you know was was huge the the play where we tracked down and caused a fumble I mean it's just reminded me of uh something you know Justin Smith you know would do and I you know right now I got Joey right up there with with uh Justin Smith I mean that's that's a football player territory plus I want to talk about khil Mack too I mean khil was uh you know had the had the same same type of game quarterback pressures sack um really dominant against the run and uh and and dominant in the pass you know just really hard to block him uh he had a great game just with KH how good is his bull rush relative to like other pass rushers you've coached or even played with like over the course of your career H I just called a Le in the uh in in the game um you know just tremendous tremendous tremendous football player and uh you know that that we have you know true two great Edge players uh and Tully had a great game too I mean his uh you know I don't know how many snaps he had but I think you know Joey were there were all in the 20 to 40 range which was uh which was great all our all our upfront people uh played them all I mean eight or nine uh and they were all playing 20 to 40 plays Puna for had a had a had an amazing game Morgan Fox uh played played really he was outstanding um you know our front was was great when they when they had to be great uh the the short yardage stops the uh the turnovers uh you know really call it four turnovers when you count the fourth down stop you know call it five uh with the Miss field goal uh you know really huge just huge in the game what like I mean with JK yesterday got you get the game ball I mean like he was like throughout Camp he wanted to really you know get to this point and did what did you like what what he did fundamentally I didn't like JK's performance I loved it you know it was is uh in in all in all ways I mean um start off with the ball security by all our offensive players um you there was some tremendous ball security by both backs gusan JK uh Quinton Johnson you know everybody touched the ball secured it uh L that about our tight ends and our all of our receivers and our backs um JK I'll tell you what I really loved was the pass protection there was uh there was um he was Elite in pass protection uh you know he was you talk about somebody that you know you got that sense from Joey Bosa that there was something to prove I mean I thought JK really played that way as well and um you know excited also that there's you know things to improve offensively uh saw that you know first half uh penalties and and uh looked a lot like that was that was the preseason kind of a kind of a game for uh us offensively in the first half and then then really good in the second half they obviously tried to heat up Justin a little bit with some some blitzes just how did you feel like you guys dealt with their different Blitz and pressure looks yesterday yeah uh you know if we're talking offensive line rashan Slater uh tremendous game Joe Al uh tremendous in pass protection uh and things to get better at uh in some of the in the in in the Run scheme with with Joe but just feel really great about getting the win and having things to work on and improve this week um Boseman uh uh really I mean the energy he brought the the I mean the pursuit downfield uh covering plays I mean he was he was a it was a great blue collar performance by him if I had a blue collar award you know offensively I would give it to uh to Mr Boseman uh pad level you know can be improved uh you know um you know our guards uh I thought played extremely well uh you know just a couple couple things we can improve on in in in pad level and and uh some of our and and most of them were all in the in the first half you know but um I thought it was a really really good solid performance Justin we only had one sack that was uh that was great uh Justin saved us two or three more uh just by his courage stature and creativity of of of getting the ball out you know I thought he he led us to Victory uh took care of the football you know really managed those uh what could have been could have been worse plays and uh you know threw you know two or three balls that should have been caught um and you know the throws that just nobody else can can make so uh yeah continuing to you know keep him keep him protected and uh you know allowing him to to do what he does um but I thought it was just a you know gritty performance by him and led us to Victory really impressed same with uh if I to talk about the Special Teams uh effort made all our kicks um and we're just really guys just played played hard played uh played well played efficient you know all three sides of the ball I think uh that was huge in getting the victory do you think teams are going to attack you offensively that way you know bring a decent amount of blitzes and try and heat Justin up and devote resources in that way moving forward or do you think it was sort of a specific thing with the with the Raiders I mean all things are possible what a what a defense can do um definitely there was there was there was more Blitz more you know some more zero coverage in the game um that the Raiders hadn't showed up to this point so uh yeah we're everything's going to be a possibility you mentioned Jo specifically is there something that stood out after watching the tape that maybe you didn't notice in real time from his performance yeah he was uh he was he was really good I mean uh I we talked you know some about before the game uh you know anybody's lack of experience is going to be more than made up by their inexperience uh just because the you know just the fire in the belly uh wanting to prove themselves and uh thought that really showed uh with not only Joe alt but with lad makoni U Junior Coulson amount of snaps uh that he had in the game game the rotation of the Green Dot uh you know was a was a three-way rotation you know by series between DP and and U Deon and Junior and I I thought they all handled it really well you uh you obviously know that you know your approach to Building A Team Works you've done it over the course of your career but as far as like building belief how important is like proof of concept like first game you come out and you're able to finish in the fourth quarter as far as building with the players and sort of how you approach things and what you're doing um I've said it before I mean this is the this is the Los Angeles Chargers uh approach this is this is uh you this is Justin Herbert this is Joey Bosa this is Kil Mack this is uh Derwin James uh I mean the way they the way they work the way they play uh it's it's all about the team it's it's it's all at the highest level it's all the work that they pour in on a daily basis and and how they play the game I mean it's all out it's all out all the time I mean it's it's hustle it's it's constant hustle it's hustling at all times uh Derwin James I mean a spectacular game by Derwin James played all 60 plays um you eight eight or some tackles got his 500th tackle uh and one of the I think the the fastest fastest um to 500 tackles this this uh since the turn of the century um I mean that's in 24 years that's uh that's a that's a huge accomplishment and you know he's been playing playing that way long before uh us newcomers you know arrived on the scene so yeah I feel lucky to be to be able to be coaching these guys as uh do the rest of the the coaches on the staff this is this is uh that's the LA Chargers mentality and um lucky to be coaching players like that so in that vein those players were already here you you come in what do you feel is kind of like your role then if these players are already here they were already doing it what what do you want to bring in in your job as a new one of the new people yeah do it like Derwin uh I think I remember very distinctly uh one and a half practices as the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers and it did not take me it took me one practice and a half to realize that the way number three does things you know let's let's all do it let's all do it like Derwin let's do it like number three and uh and Justin was already doing it that way I mean there's nobody that works harder you know puts more more uh more commitment in than than Justin Herbert and and I say the same about Joey Bosa and col Mack I mean the dedication they have the commitment they have to the team um you know the love they have for you know the team and their teammates I mean it's like yeah let's all do it like that the uh Team tweeted out a video after the national anthem of you I guess getting Justin pumped up with some wax to the shoulder pads what do you do that like has it always been a thing you've done with quarterbacks like before game and what I guess what was the purpose of that um yeah just um it goes back to my first first experience playing pro football I was uh getting ready for a preseason game sitting in the uh the locker room in my chair staring at my locker getting ready and Walter pton came up to me and and asked me if I was nervous and uh I said no heck no I mean it's a preseason game I played at Michigan in front of 110,000 people you know got this and uh then he told me that he gets nervous before every game that he's ever played and you know stomach the butterflies uh and you know and then I turned him I said well actually I am pretty nervous Walter you got any advice or tips and he said yeah just seek contact get a hit in get a hit in before uh you know as soon as you can in the game hit somebody or or uh or get hit doesn't matter that's why I always that's why I always seek out contact This Walter talking he always seeks out contact uh he likes to have something on the perimeter where he could uh he knows he's going to get hit or he can go hit somebody else and as soon as he takes that first hit of the game then the butterflies disappear so uh you know I've always remembered that and and tried to uh tried to uh you know get hit and then it's was like okay well I probably don't want to get hit as much so uh I get get a couple people just to kind of hit me before the game you know kind of rough me up and and uh seemed like it I mean uh I try to do that for for the quarterback yeah know so that's that's where that comes from did you get the sense that Justin was like anticipating that or was he was he a little bit surprised uh yeah I he just it's just so big you know it's like I I probably felt like a little little mosquito trying to hit him so I don't know if it really helped or not we'll see if I keep keeps doing it or not it's just uh gu the guy's a rock I mean it's like like you know like a it's like iron you know it's amazing Jim after yesterday he said he was you know after all the yards or whatever he said he was disappointed in in himself because he just ran down on on on both runs did did did you talk to him at all about that no um no I wasn't uh wasn't disappointed at all I mean it's just I think you're just hearing somebody somebody talk about uh when it's great to play with well and have a great game uh you know and physical and like I said to win but still have stuff to work on I mean that's that's encouraging as heck for uh for an individual player you know and for a a unit and for a team so um you know the fact that I think I think what I hear when I hear him hear him say that is uh you know yeah he's got he's got uh he's got some excitement about uh there's there's more to get here you know there's more meat on the bone you know let's go get it let's go attack it and uh you know if that's you know him feeling like he needs to get in in uh in better shape um yeah let's go it's an all you can eat buffet you know let's let's go let's go work on that but it's like I mean it's like uh I hear you know I hear like a sh I mean like a shark with blood in the water man let's let's go get this let's go get this this meat on the bone and get all there is not leave any that's what I hear when I hear him talking like that for me um did you did you were you planning to return to social media you've been active uh recently on Twitter and a while is that you and what what was that what prompted that return uh being a dad has prompted that return uh teenage teenage daughter and uh daughter in her uh in her 20s and another teenage daughter coming who's 13 and then the 11-year-old uh they're uh they're getting on that stuff now and uh yeah I think it's my dad responsibility to to get on there and monitor some of that stuff so just just letting them know that I'm I'm watching that's that's that's me being dad the uh the fall starts in the in the first half was there a a common cause for those uh yeah yeah um like I said I think there were some uh you know some you know our guys haven't played a lot in the preseason you know um both sides of the ball but uh you know this this this quick lateral Movement by the by the defensive lines uh becoming really common in the NFL watched saw a lot of it this week you know they're trying to move quick along the line and and uh you know try to get the the offense to think they're off sides and you know point at them or uh or just get them to to Flinch and they had a couple of you know kind of hard uh SE Gap rushers in the game and just something we got to be better at you know it's just um something something that we'll be you know putting an emphasis on and working hard on this week in practice following up on the linebacker rotation you mentioned earlier like with the de on bzel and and Junior what did you like about keeping that group fresh and you know kind of having them in and out yeah uh it's a great question I thought it was something that uh you know really was a big factor in helping us uh win the game uh was a the stamina you know I give Ben Herbert and and his his staff a lot of credit I mean uh there been a lot of fourth quarter finishers that have U gone before us and I felt our guys uh you know when they when they put up that four I mean that's hopefully they're thinking about it CU that's what goes into my mind is a lot of fourth quarter finishers here that we've done to put ourselves in a in a better position um but also the rotation I mean that'd be this the second you know really good factor in that that um you know guys playing 20 to 40 plays uh you know in that in that front seven defensively uh and then you know guys going in and and and playing really good you know saw Tuli Bud uh you know a lot of good snaps in there saw with the linebackers in that rotation uh D line with with Morgan atito um Puna uh Scott Matlock and uh and tier tart he had and he needs to play more you know he I think he had five or six snaps but uh you know he he played violent explosive when he was in there so want to see him see him playing more more as well but um you know I think that's something that benefited us are you guys rotating the the Green Dot between the linebackers CU who and it's some who's wearing it in DP Denzel Perryman Dan Henley and Junior Coulson rotated the Green Dot they all different different moments rotated it by series and uh they did did really well all three of them handled the the communication they handled it together um and it was uh it was well done now are you good with rotating that over the course of the Season or would you ultimately like to settle on sort of one one person that's wearing that Green Dot consistently ah we'll we'll we'll see how that plays out but uh you know it was it was uh it was it was good you know um there's uh if you're going to have a rotation then there needs to be a rotation with the green dots so um feel like that's something that benefited us and we were good at so uh you know probably would lean more without having decided that probably as I stand here before you it would lead more to uh you know keeping that keeping that going
