later Lydia films the final segment of her last episode of ghost house opting to spend time with astd the two venture to Dracula's castle and astd becomes smitten with an employee Vlad astred and Vlad eventually get married with Lydia watching from the side despite this Lydia continues to have nightmares about Beetlejuice including a dream in which astd Bears beetlejuice's child traumatized a startled Lydia wakes up in a shock State cast Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice pronounced Beetle juu and afterlife ghost and bio Exorcist who wants to marry someone from the realm of the living both Keaton and director Tim Burton opted to keep the character as politically incorrect as he was in the original film due to their love for that character trait with Burton deeming Beetlejuice as a character whose whole point is that he does not undergo any character Arc or development never evolving when know a rider as Lydia Deets the former Gothic teenager who nearly married Beetlejuice in 1988 now mother of astred Deets and Hostess of the ghost house with Lydia Deets show hoping to keep the first film's Essence Ryder never thought her character would become a mother but a spinster in the maand residences attic but Lydia's daughter ASD justifies such change Katherine Ohara as deia Deets Lydia's stepmother Astrid's step Grim author and Charles deetz's Widow now the hostess of a real art show located in a Soho London gall Jenna Orga as Astra Lydia's teen daughter and deia's step granddaughter Justin thuru as Rory Lydia's current boyfriend and a television producer Monica beluchi as Dolores beetlejuice's ex-wife who in life was a mysterious woman and a soul sucking witch who poisoned Beetlejuice several centuries earlier during the black plague before he killed her with an axe in retaliation Willam dafo as wolf Jackson a ghost detective who in life was a be movie action star Burn Gorman as father Damian a reverend in Winter River Danny DeVito as a janitor who committed suicide by drinking varnish Arthur KY as Jeremy a young boy who is Astrid's love interest Philipe Kates is Vlad a young man dressed as a vampire in Transylvania Santiago cabara as Richard Astrid's father and Lydia's former husband who disappeared in South America Additionally the character of Charles Deets appears in the film portrayed and voiced by an unconfirmed actor in addition to using the likeness of original actor Jeffrey Jones through various means including archival photos paintings and an animated sequence that describes the character's death the character's death was inspired by a nightmare of Burton development after the success of Beetlejuice 1988 a sequel was fast tracked by the Jeff and film company two Beetlejuice sequel scripts were commissioned in 1990 the first Beetlejuice in love was penned by screenwriter Warren scaran who did a heavy rewrite on the first film's script in scaran Sequel Beetlejuice meets Leo who tragically plummets to his death while proposing to his girlfriend Julia on the Eiffel Tower when Leo enters the afterlife Beetlejuice escapes to the world of the living and Su Julia scarin died shortly after turning in his first draft of the in love script that same year Tim Burton hired Jonathan Jims to write a potential Beetlejuice sequel titled Beetlejuice goes Hawaiian Tim thought it would be funny to match the surfing backdrop of a beach movie with some sort of German expressionism because they're totally wrong together Jem said the story followed the Deets family moving to Hawaii where Charles is developing a resort they soon discover that his company is building on the burial ground of an ancient Hawaiian Kahuna the spirit comes back from the afterlife to cause trouble and Beetlejuice becomes a hero by winning a surf contest with magic Michael Keaton and wona writer agreed to do the film on the condition that Burton directed but both he and Katon became occupied with Batman Returns 1992 Burton was still interested in Beetlejuice goes Hawaiian in early 19 91 impressed with Daniel waters's work on Heather's 1989 which also Stars Winona writer Burton approached him for a rewrite however he eventually signed Waters to write the script for Batman Returns by August 1993 producer David jeffin hired Pamela Norris Troop Beverly Hills Saturday Night Live to rewrite Warner Bros approached Kevin Smith in 1996 to rewrite the script though Smith turned down the offer in favor of Superman lives Smith later joked that his response was didn't we say all we needed to say in the first Beetle Juice must we go Tropical in March 1997 gems released a statement saying the Beetle Juice goes Hawaiian script is still owned by the jeffin company and it will likely never get made you really couldn't do it now anyway Winona is too old for the role and the only way they could make it would be to totally recast it Burton had considered several other sequel ideas as well over the years saying in 2024 we talked about lots of different things that was early on when we were going Beetlejuice and the Haunted Mansion Beetlejuice Goes West whatever lots of things came up but all those initial scenarios set in Hawaii the wild west or Paris France were all scrapped in September 2011 Warner Bros hired Seth Graham Smith who collaborated with Burton on Dark Shadows and Abraham Lincoln vampire Hunter both 2012 to write and produce a sequel to Beetlejuice Graham Smith signed on with the intention of doing a story that is worthy of us actually doing this for real something that is not just about cashing in is not just about forcing a remake or a reboot down someone's throat he was also adamant that Katon would return and that Warner Bros would not recast the role Burton and Keaton had not officially signed on but would return if the script was good enough Graham Smith met with Katon in February 2012 we talked for a couple of hours and talked about big picture stuff it's a priority for Warner Bros it's a priority for Tim Michael's been wanting to do it for 20 years and he'll talk to anybody about it who will listen in November 2013 Ryder hinted at a possible return for the sequel as well by saying I'm kind of sworn to secrecy but it sounds like it might be happening it's 27 years later and I have to say I love Lydia DEET so much she was such a huge part of me I would be really interested in what she is doing 27 years later Ryder confirmed that she would only consider making a sequel if Burton and Katon were involved in December 2014 Burton stated it's a character that I love and I miss actually working with Michael there's only one Beetle Juice we're working on a script and I think it's probably closer than ever and I'd love to work with him again in January 2015 writer Graham Smith told Entertainment Weekly that the script was finished and that he and Burton intended to start filming Beetlejuice too by the end of the year and that both Katon and Ryder would return in their respective roles in August 2015 on Late Night with Seth Mayers Ryder confirmed she would be reprising her role in the seet equal in May 2016 Burton stated it's something that I really would like to do in the right circumstances but it's one of those films where it has to be right it's not a kind of a movie that cries out for a sequel It's not the Beetlejuice Trilogy so it's something that if the elements are right because I do love the character and Michael's amazing as that character so yeah we'll see but there's nothing concrete yet in October 2017 Mike vukadinovich was hired to re write the script in April 2019 Warner Bros stated the sequel had been shelved pre-production in February 2022 a sequel was announced again this time produced by Brad Pitt Studio plan b Entertainment alongside Warner Bros Burton stated in October 2022 that he was not involved in the project but backtracked Days Later saying nothing is out of the question Burton ultimately returned as the film's director and tried to strip everything from the story to go to the basics of working with good people actors and puppets feeling that the project made him reflect why he liked making movies Burton came up with the film Story upon thinking about Lydia Deets a character of his with whom he connected as a teenager wondering what could have been of her life after the first film's events and how her family life could have developed turning from a cool teenager into a fedup adult who host a popular medium related show titled ghost house with Lydia Deets whose daughter hates her Burton credited the years of his life since the original film's release as the reason he couldn't do Beetlejuice Beetlejuice until then having experienced many of those things himself finding the project a very personal movie starring a weird family in a familyfriendly and emotional story of three generations experiencing basic things everyone feels in life when growing up Burton and Katon agreed to not use excessive amounts of technology and sought to make the film feel handmade with a plot likened to Wily Wonka's psychedelic boat ride in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory 1971 that takes very big swings like unhinged and uncontrollable fantas magoria and Burton's head being dumped out onto the screen Katon felt the film's story to be stronger than its predecessors with more of a connection to the audience in terms of characters finding Beyond F things he wasn't ready for while Ryder confidently expressed her belief that the film exceeded her high expectations and expected every generation to find something they can appreciate from the film in March 2023 it was reported by variety that Jenna Orga who previously worked with Burton on the 2022 Netflix series Wednesday was in talks to play astd Deets Lydia's daughter while Burton was now expected to direct the film Ortega and Ryder formed an insane and intense Bond as they work together with the latter seeing a younger but a thousand times cooler version of herself in the former while sharing Hobbies like both being ciles and regarding the experience of working with each other special resulting in Ortega developing her own performance for Astrid in May Danny Elfman announced he was returning to compose the score for the sequel while it was also revealed Ortega was confirmed to Star and Wednesday creators Alfred go and and Miles Miller wrote the script Justin theu Burn Gorman Arthur KY Philipe Kates and Willam dafo would also be added to the cast in undisclosed roles with Dao's being described as an afterlife officer dafo later explained to variety at the marish film festival that his character is an afterlife police officer who used to be a be movie action star in life before dying in an accident with his skills leading him to become a detective within the realm he later regretted sharing those details about his character fearing that Burton may get angry with him for revealing a few spoilers from the film Katherine Ohara reprises her role as dilia Deets as well as Monica baluchi joining the cast as Beetle ju's wife Dolores Colleen Atwood a frequent collaborator of Burton was announced to be working on the costume design for the film Atwood disclosed that beetlejuice's striped suit would return in the film as it is trademark to the character's quintessential appearance in the same way the titular character of Ls Carroll's novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland 1865 Sports and iconic blue dress though Keaton disagreed and preferred Beetle juices burgundy tuxedo Ohara later confirmed that the film would include Harry bont's 1955 song day o the Banana Boat Song which was featured in the first film Katon insisted that Beetlejuice had limited screen time in the film like the first movie saying the idea was no no no you can't load it up with Beetle Juice that'll kill it the beetle jice character doesn't drive the story as much as he did in the first one he's more part of the storyline in this one as opposed to the first one which is a case of this thing comes in and drives the movie a little bit filming filming was originally scheduled to begin in mid 2022 later it was delayed to an expected start date of May 10th 2023 taking place in London if the 2023 wga strike did not lead to another delay in production production was officially confirmed to have begun the following day Hertfordshire England exterior filming took place in in East Corinth Vermont the location of the original movies outdoor scenes in mid 2023 filming was suspended in July due to the 2023 sag after strike had ended filming resumed on November 16th 2023 in Melrose Massachusetts and wrapped in Vermont on November 30th 2023 post production by March 2024 Keaton had seen a completed rough cut of the film and stated that further editing would occur thereafter later that month it was stated in The Hollywood Reporter that Jeffrey Jones would not reprise his role as Charles Deets in the film his character being revealed in the trailers to have been killed off in April Gina Davis stated she would not be returning as Barbara maitlin due to her age saying our characters were stuck the way they looked when they died forever so it's been a while it's been a minute in August Burton would confirm via people that Davis and Alec Baldwin didn't return for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice as the mands weren't needed for the story he wanted to tell which he admitted that he personally couldn't have done in 1989 due to it focusing on three generations within the Deets family to explain their absence Burton stated that the film would reveal the maand used a loophole to leave their former house during the interim between this film and the original production VFX supervisor is Angus by curtain working with VFX producer Alex mcnell supported by visual effects Studios frame store one of us in buff release Beetlejuice Beetlejuice opened the 81st Venice International Film Festival on August million from Ford 200 theaters in its opening weekend the film made $13 million on Thursday night previews critical response on the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes 77 7% of 230 critics reviews are positive with an average rating of six 510 the websites consensus reads Michael Keaton's devious Poltergeist still has plenty of juice left in this madap return to form for Tim Burton marrying Charming practical effects and ghoulish gags to provide a fun fun time Metacritic which uses a weighted average assigned the film a score of 62 out of 100 based on 58 critics indicating generally favorable reviews Manola dargas of the New York Times called the film a fun but less edgy sequel future when asked about a potential third film Burton said let's do the math dot dot dot it took 35 years to do this so I'll be over 100 but I guess it's possible with the Advent of science these days but I don't think so Beetlejuice Beetlejuice movie review Beetlejuice beetle juice is an overstuffed toy bag of a movie every minute or two the director digs into the bag and produces a new toy it's a return to form for director Tim Burton only in the sense that like Burton early in his career it's not interested in form except at the immediate level of the image and the scene that's not a complaint by the way it's an observation this movie is fun in direct proportion to how wanting and tossed off it seems one of the the major characters is a blood squirting torso that lost its head in a shark attack there are animated creatures and one clamation style sequence dreams within dreams multiple full-on musical numbers several promise estats of marriage and a deranged final sequence that ranks with Burton's most decadent displays of pure inspiration the movie seems to be having fun seeing how far it can push the content limits of a PG-13 rating it probably deserved an R for graphic violence alone perhaps it was saved from that fate by being outrageously funny like Itchy and Scratchy cartoons on The Simpsons what do you need to know really wono Ryder returns as Lydia deetz the goth teen who was forced to marry the trickster demon Beetlejuice AA Beetlejuice AKA Michael Keaton in the 1988 original Lydia is now a widowed professional medium in her 40s who hosts a popular new york-based TV series called ghost house with Lydia Deets and has a teenage daughter named Astra Jenny Orga of Burton's Netflix series Wednesday who loes her Lydia has a boyfriend named Rory Justin theu who is also her producer and credits himself with keeping the ex pillhead Lydia on the straight and narrow even though they both step off Lydia's step-grandmother dilia Deets Katherine ohar has become a multimedia Gallery artist and influencer which seems perfect considering who she was in the first movie they all end up back in Winter River after the sudden death of deia's husband Charles played in the original by Jeffrey Jones and of course they get entangled with Beetlejuice facing his own existential threat courtesy of rampaging ex-wife Dolores Monica beluchi Dolores is a soul sucking demon who married the juice as he calls himself back in the 14 century when he was robbing the graves of plague victims she wants to reunite with him and his head for his section of the underworld to seal the deal Dolores is less of a character or even a plot element than a means for burden and co-s screenwriters Alfred go and Miles Miller also of Wednesday to give the movie regular jolts of macabra energy and she does a hacked up corpse who is introduced reassembling herself limb by limb with a staple gun dolores's visual presentation will remind Burton completists of a character from his best work as a producer Henry celix The Nightmare Before Christmas the patched together rag doll Sally there's also a love story kind of between astred and a local boy Arthur KY of House of the Dragon who invites her for a date on Halloween night and correctly notes that she's dressed as scientist Marie curri after she'd begun to die of radiation poisoning the teen romance sections of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice are retro80s Burton par Excellence evoking the intoxicating sensations of youthful attraction driven by banter music and shared stories there could have been more of this stuff it's so terrific thanks to KI and Ora's note perfect performances but also the way Burton stages and Frames their interactions that it could have been the centerpiece of a whole other film Katon is Sensational as always he slips into beetlejuice's rancid skin again with the prideful Glee of one of those blessed old guys who keeps his prom tux in a hall closet and can put it on any time he likes and have it fit perfectly but of the main returning cast members Ryder is the standout she conveys a sweetly glum and fragile presence somebody who's been through a lot and changed as a result she Taps into the sense of a woman so dragged down by her mistakes and missed opportunities and random tragedies that she can't seem to get off the tracks she's been on for years now or even change direction her reemergence as a star thanks mainly to the80s Nostalgia Fest stranger things is one of the best things to happen as a result of Netflix's ongoing cultural dominance she plays a seasoned slightly battered grown-up here but her fluty croak of a voice still has music in it she's wonderful with thuru who has that John Ham gift of being able to play a self-involved twit without telegraphing that he's not actually that guy the various elements don't cohere so much as coexists and sometimes jostle against each other there are moments where the contrivance is required to put characters in the same scene so they can communicate important information to each other are so awkward and obligatory that Burton seems to lean into them and turn them into a private joke between him and the audience the building out of the underworld as an alternative Society with upside down rules and morality is funny but not hugely original the satire on bureaucratic office jobs and officials rubber stand camping forms feels time warped in from the80s and not in a good way but it's not a huge drag because that world is really just a huge Twisted playground for Burton returning costume designer Colleen Atwood a regular collaborator of Burton's since 1990s Edward Scissor Hands cinematographer Harris zabar loos's Belfast and production designer Mark scrutin another Wednesday hire nobody who's seen a lot of Burton movies will come out of Beetlejuice beetle juice stunned by the newness of what they've just witnessed this is Burton doing Burton from the analog era to the extent that such a thing is still possible in 2024 Burton started out as an animator and carved out an identity as something like the Federico felini of high school golf his Persona was somewhere between an illustrator a magician and a prop comic at some point in the mid90s he seemed to force himself to care a bit more about plot albeit with spectacular and welcome regressions like Mars Attacks but the films gradually came to seem too polished and calculated and once he gave himself over to CGI the movies mostly lost that handmade seeming feeling it's fun to watch him take this project as an opportunity to return to his 80s Roots as a director whose passion was building worlds indulging his sensibility and trying to get away with as much as he could the closing credits list probably hundreds of puppeteers and props Fabricators every hot glue do and jaggedy latex Stitch and hand painted margin detail is not only visible on screen but contributes to the feeling that you're seeing a huge fun thing that was made by humans not software other information about this film back in 1988 Beetlejuice was a comedy a ghost story a high camp horror film and a macabra funhouse ride all driven by a new kind of palm buzzer freak Show prankish I first saw the movie at a Saturday night sneak preview before anyone knew a thing about it and by the time it was over it was clear that the director Tim Burton was going to be a superstar who ruled over his own weirdly Ardent world of ghoulish mockery Burton at 26 had already directed peewee's big adventure but beatle juice though in some ways a ramshackle cartoon of a movie had a force at work in it you might say that Beetle juu was a Vibe the vision of the afterlife as a waiting room of wax museum Horrors the moment when those shrimp leapt off the plate in the spectacular day o musical demonic possession sequence and Michael Keaton's feral jabbering Groucho marks meets oozing derelict performance as Beetlejuice the gr bio Exorcist the movie channeled a spirit that wasn't just loopy it was hilariously insane it's the nature of the brand that Tim Burton came that as you watch Beetlejuice Beetlejuice his let us revisit all that 36 years later because why the hell not sequel that opened the Venice film festival today you can just about see him at work putting the pieces together trying to recapture the old Burton cracked Gothic lightning in a bottle one of those pieces is the image of Monica beluchi as dores a ghost who's been hacked to pieces and is laying dormant in different boxes as she literally pulls and Staples her body Parts together sawed off torso legs and arms face that's been cut in half all to the tune of the BG's tragedy which sort of half makes sense I guess there's supposed to be something tragic about her but that mostly just works as an ideal demented needle drop she then wanders around sucking out the souls of the Dead which renders them really dead did I mention that she's beetlejuice's ex-wife it's complicated Beetlejuice Beetlejuice begins awkward ly with Burton setting up his characters as if they were part of some Beetlejuice board game as it goes on though the pieces start to come together in much the same way that dore's face and body does the movie is just a lightweight Riff on Beetlejuice a piece of fan service really it doesn't give you the full Monster kitch jolt that the original film had yet there's good fan service and bad and as stilted and gim cracky as it can sometimes be I had a pretty good time at Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Burton's once skewed way of looking at the world long ago got baked into ours that's one reason he has struggled at times to inject his movies with that same buzz but if Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is mostly a lark like the current hit Broadway version of Beetlejuice part of what the new movie delivers is honest Nostalgia for the moment when Burton's clown Spirit from Hell sensibility still had the kick of shock value as a result it's one of those sequels that spends a lot of time looking back the film opens with a tingle of Danny elfman's jumpy ghost music along with another flyover shot of the picturesque town of winter River Connecticut where win owner writers Lydia Deets the former goth teen who interfaced with the spirit world is now a psychic mediator who hosts her own hunt for the Paranormal television show intitled ghost house Lydia still wears her hair in spiky bangs but where you might expect her to have relaxed into middle age the way Ryder plays her she's more distraught than ever maybe that's because her TV producer boyfriend Rory Justin theu is a fatuous SAS who speaks in Progressive therapeutic bromides to cover his flagrant opportunism or maybe it's because her daughter asenna ortiga has nothing but contempt for her mother's ghostly preoccupations which she thinks are sheer delusion Katherine O'Hara winningly overd as ever his back is deep Lydia's narcissistic artist stepmother and to spin past any awkwardness over former cast member Jeffrey Jones who is now a convicted sex offender his character Charles Lydia's father and deia's husband is given a clamation segment that ends with him being chomped by a shark the character then spends the rest of the movie skullking through the afterlife as a blood spurting trunk without a head as for kon's title pest he keeps popping up in Lydia's sight lines and it's not long before he's summoned Katon at 73 invest him with that same obscene nashing energy and throwaway scuz ball cunning and in fact Beetlejuice figures out another way to coerce Lydia into marrying him it's all hooked to the fact that astd has fallen for a sweetheart of a dude in her class Arthur KY who turns out to have a very dark Secret the movie doesn't come entirely alive until the scene wear Beetlejuice acting as Lydia and Rory's couple's therapist literally spills his guts then produces an infant version of himself a baby as disquieting as the crawling on the ceiling one in train spotting a Gambit like this exists mostly for its own agreeably sick sake and that in its way is the Beetle Juice aesthetic Tim Burton making this stuff up simply because it tickles his naughty fancy at least one thing he has made up is a bit cringe the punning use of Soul Train complete with a boogie down Horus line of 70s Funk dancers which in the movie becomes a train for dead Souls get it and the plot has even more of the balsa wood quality that the Alec Baldwin Gina Davis ghost plot in Beetlejuice had after a while though the conceit start to gather Gusto and chime together whether it's Bob the popey shrunken head in a full bodysuit presiding over an office Army of Bobs or Willam dafo digging into the cheesiness of wolf Jackson a former movie actor now with the left side of his brain exposed the result of a grenade accident who heads the afterlife police force but does it like he's still acting in a bad movie or The film's Cheeky homages to the black and white era of Mario Bava and to the dreamy anxiety of Carrie or the hypnotic gem that Burton brings off in the climactic wedding sequence by using Richard Harris's rendition of MacArthur Park for a sequence of blist out lip sink lunacy Beetle Juice Beetle Juice is no Beetle Juice but in the end it's got just enough Burton juice positive elements without giving too much away ASD makes a serious mistake a mistake so serious that it lands her in the afterlife's Nether world and nearly forces her aboard the one-way Soul Train to destinations unknown but Lydia risks life and death and some other serious consequences to save her little girl and that as you might imagine does wonders for their relationship spiritual elements astred believes her mother's a Huer a fraud I believe in things that I can see she tells Jeremy science facts but if astd initially believes that the immortal soul and life after death is just so much Hokum Beetlejuice Beetlejuice takes pains to prove otherwise we arguably spend more time with the dead than with the living here and the afterlife they inhabit is a strange Place indeed Beetlejuice Beetlejuice suggests that the grimy Twisted necropolis we see is more or less a holding area the dead eventually bored the Soul Train to the great beyond featuring locals such as the allision fields and the fires of damnation we see one person fall to his fiery Doom naturally or unnaturally we see scads of dead people wander about two the afterlife has a great many rules to follow to all outlined in the handbook for the recently deceased as such characters utter strange incantations sign contracts in blood stamp forms and break bylaws Lydia describes Beetlejuice as a trickster demon and there's certainly something diabolical about the guy when he crosses himself for instance Beetlejuice sets himself on fire but we also learn that he and Dolores were once regular all people albeit people who got hitched by way of a dark ceremony that involved drinking each other's blood biting the heads off chickens and sacrificing a goat top side superficial Christianity still seems to hold some sway in Winter Grove we repeatedly see The Village Church and meet its priest who speaks generally and confusingly about heaven and hell and the extended climactic scene takes place in a sanctuary decorated by a huge cross dilia wears a cross around her neck during her late husband's wake two though her own spiritual leanings seem to be more of a make your own New Age Faith type thing the same could be said for both Lydia and Rory as well who met at some sort of a hip metaphysical grief Retreat astred profanely refers to Rory's Vibe as new age bull deia performs a makeshift grief ceremony at Charles gravite instead of hyms children sing the Banana Boat Song at Charles memorial service a wedding seems to take place place in a church we read a reference to a Ouija board sexual and romantic content in a flashback Beetlejuice and Dolores engage in Passionate lovemaking we see clothes comically fly into the air and a few humorously suggestive movements in Shadows but nothing critical is seen in the present dore's dismembered body reassembles itself in the process of becoming fully whole we see quite a bit of her cleavage and thighs as she Staples herself back together Beetlejuice occasionally leers at women and astd finds one of his old Flyers that market him as a love sex doctor UA ASD says deia's latest avanguard art project involves turning her own body into a canvas we don't see anything critical but a shapely but IL defined nude manquin Grace is one of her exhibit cubes various characters Kiss one another ASD spends some unsupervised time in Jeremy's room though nothing outside a kiss takes place there deia Mourns Charles whom she calls her horny handyman beetlejuice's past romance with Lydia as documented in the original 1988 film forms a central Nexus in which this story revolved of course and while Beetlejuice Beetlejuice doesn't dwell on the age difference we should remind you that Lydia was just 16 years old at the time violent content Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Delights in its running gags and the biggest and most gag Worthy is its parade of walking corpses all of which display their grotesquely humorous modes of demise it would be impossible to catalog them all here but here are some notable examples Charles as we mentioned died in a plain crash shark attack we see a clation reenactment of the tragic event complete with a burst of blood covering the camera at the end he's an ancillary character here two walking around the afterlife sans's head and torso we see his bloody guts contained in the rest of the guy's body like Cheerios in a cereal bowl and when he talks and yes he does talk blood spurts from an extended artery and onto walls floors and people another notable character walks around with part of his brain and facial muscles exposed though the guts here are far more cartoonish and as mentioned Dolores stapled most of herself back together with a staple gun several dead people hang out in the afterlife's interminable waiting room including a surfer or rather the upper body of a surfer a seriously charred Santa Claus whom we assume met his demise in a chimney and a competitive eater whose mouth is stuffed with hot dogs perhaps the most horrible weighty though might be a cat lady who's been snacked on by her favorite felines a full leg bone is exposed and the tabies are still chewing on other parts of her as well someone walks around with a javelin or Harpoon sticking through her neck several characters have shrunken heads with stitched together mouths piranhas chew on a guy in perpetuity someone apparently died from an egg beater to the eye a power saw adorns the face of another there are Fates worse than death though Dolores literally sucks whatever life is left out of several folks and walks away leaving them looking like deflated balloons this it seems makes dore's victims really dead also worth noting a newborn version of beatle juice is birthed a couple of times quite messily in one sequence he gnaws the mother's leg bloody in another he murders the attending doctor in a seemingly R-rated spray of blood ASD nearly crashes into several cars before thuing into a tree a giant sandworm attacks and in one case seems to devour person or two surreal guts are literally spilled bat wings appear to Flap out of beetlejuice's face someone drinks poison we learn that one character is a murderer ASD reminisces about the age in appropriate costumes because they were too gory not too sexually inappropriate that her father designed for her for Halloween someone's bitten by poisonous snakes and so on crude or profane language we hear one f word word one bleeped F-word and another incomplete F-word that melds into a different profanity also on tap a dozen words and a smattering of other profanities including a crap H and PS said God's name is misused seven times three with the word DN and Jesus name is abused once drug and alcohol content it's suggested that Lydia and Rory both take prescription pills for recreational use when Rory sees that Lydia is hiding a vial of such pills he dumps them into a trash and then digs them out so they can both partake this is the last time I dig pills out of a trash can for you understand he scolds characters drink wine Jeremy confesses to sneaking six packs of beer up to his Treehouse behind his father's back the town's priest father Daman seems to have a barely concealed drinking problem other not the elements Beetlejuice exudes rude sounding noises at times and he talks about needing to use the restroom Astrid and Lydia have a difficult relationship so much so that when Lydia calls Astrid the name that pops up on her phone is alleged mom characters lie and mislead conclusion the entertainment industry has always been just that an industry while some films indeed aspire to be art the business itself is predicated on on costs profits and the bottom line sure most filmmakers want to make good movies but the folks who sign the checks they want successful movies and in the Quest for the next big success studios are dusting off successful but aged films sometimes 20 30 or 40 years old and sequel ising them but to borrow and twist a line from Jurassic Park a film all about bringing old things back to life just because a sequel can be made should it Beetlejuice Beetlejuice feels like pure fan service director Tim Burton is still the Cinematic master of Edward gory style Gloom and gaffas the titular anti-hero whose name is actually spelled Beetlejuice is as crass and wacky as ever The Supporting Cast displays an entertaining level of dysfunction yes there's even a dance number akin to the famed Banana Boat number from the original Beetle Juice featuring possessed performers outside dance moves and an earworm song in all their derivative glory for those who have a soft spot for the original Beetle Juice the sequel will scratch that scabby itch but when you scratch a scab There Will Be Blood oh yes if a drama contained the same level of blood and gore as Beetlejuice Beetlejuice I suspect that it would have been rated R but because the film Embraces a macabra sense of humor the sensors give it a pass and indeed some of the Uki elements we see here do feel cartoonish but others can feel pulled straight out of a bloody winse and turnaway exorcism movie and while we're on the subject of exorcisms let's not forget that Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is at least according to Lydia a demon and we laugh with and even root for that demon throughout much of the movie as a villain he plays at best third fiddle here the film is predicated on calling on infernal players to do their mortal will and at their own mortal Peril this is a fan story without much moral or a whiff of regard for real spirituality that's an issue worth thinking through I'm not immune to the dower charms of Tim Burton but Beetlejuice Beetlejuice like it's namesake can be deceptively problematic and I'd think long and hard before calling it up more details just over 10 years ago in the wake of the disastrous Alice in Wonderland live action remake that set off the past decade of nostalgic slop from Disney I called Tim Burton a hack in the years since I've softened my stands this is partially out of the recognition that Burton is a talented stylist albeit one whose films are only as strong as their scripts as well my affection for his early Works has grown namely his Batman movies and his goofy afterlife family comedy Beetlejuice thus I'm not surprised to find myself thinking that Beetlejuice Beetlejuice the legacy sequel to The 1988 classic is Burton's best work in a decade although that's a pretty low bar it's fun to watch Michael Keaton in his Gonzo juice mode and to catch up with Winona riters and Katherine O'Hara's daughter and stepmother Lydia and dilia Deets unfortunately Burton's hackish inability to elevate a bad script is still here nothing better personifies the film's lackluster storytelling than Monica bucci's Soul sucker lores the ex-wife of Bal juices who escapes from imprisonment in the afterlife reconstitutes her chopped up body and heads out on a roaring Rampage of revenge against the man who married her and happened to kill her like Baluchi's villain Beetlejuice Beetle Juice is aesthetically appealing campy fun but frankensteined it's a movie with competing plots almost no narrative momentum and no ordinary people to bounce all the madness off of leaving the end result of messy decently fun if middling time at the movies in the film we catch up with Keaton's Bal juice in the afterlife and Riders Lydia Deets in the world of the living Beetlejuice is apparently back up to his old tricks par for the course for a resuscitated franchise working as a bio Exorcist now operating out of an office manned by his buddies he met in the waiting room at the end of the first film many will recall Bob the man with the shrunken head when his ex-wife Dolores beluchi escapes from captivity he is pulled into a police investigation by ghost detective wolf Jackson Willam dafo and so he tries to find a way to escape the afterlife once again meanwhile in our world Lydia is the star of a popular paranormal reality show leveraging her ability to see ghosts to become a daytime star with elvar hair and a prining goofy producer boyfriend Rory played by an amusing Justin thuru when her Father Charles dies in a shark attack on the way back from a birding trip having sex offender Jeffrey Jones appear was out of the cards in this familyfriendly sequel Lydia reconnects with her stepmother O'Hara dilia and her estranged daughter Astro Jenna ordega together they all head back to their mansion in Winter River the location of the first film for a funeral and wake and end up re-encountering bju and the denisons of the afterlife due to some bad luck and bad habits the setup of the plot takes around half of the running time which isn't such a bad thing when you want to catch up with the characters but it does make it hard to care too much about the apparent crises that are meant to drive the plot and as you can tell from the above plot description there's a lot going on in the film and it's not easy to boil down the happenings to a simple log line like with the first film in the early going Baluchi's Dolores is introduced as a nightmarish villain and existential crises for Beetlejuice but she disappears for much of the runtime shunted off in favor of hijinks and some convoluted plotting involving ASD and a cute boy Arthur KY whom she meets in Winter River aside from the plot issues Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is lacking the most important element that made the first film a success Alec Baldwin and Gina Davis as the recently deceased couple who are so bewildered by the alternating strangeness and mundaneness of the afterlife beetle Beetlejuice attempts to have Ortega's astd serve as the audience surrogate but it never quite Works since astd serves the same narrative role as Lydia in the original film the beused child who's too smart for her parents thus the movie is lacking the normies to be bewildered at the Absurd situation and who can fuel the exposition that the audience needs to understand what's going on as well Baldwin and Davis had a hilarious gentle niess that was an essential Counterpoint point to the grotesque world of Beetlejuice in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice there are no foils for the weirdos everyone is a weirdo now perhaps generating bewilderment is impossible in a legacy sequel when most of the audience will be familiar with the characters and the world and not need the exposition to carry them along but surely there are many Teenage fans of Jenna Ortega who have never seen the first film but will seek this one out because of their affection for Wednesday Burton Direct Ed several episodes of that show and its creators Alfred go and Miles Miller are co-writers on this film those viewers have a character meant to be their age but one who lacks the fish outof water perspective that can carry them through the story in a proper sense thus while the casting might pitch the movie at gen Z audiences the film is really constructed for the older viewers who want to once again cackle at Keaton's madap energy GFA at O'Hara's absurd onliners and Marvel at the production design that showcases new parts of Burton's Gothic afterlife unfortunately at this point no one should be surprised when a legacy sequel trades the opportunity to truly craft a new doorway into the story world for repetition and Nostalgia mining Beetlejuice Beetlejuice ends up being simultaneously limp as a narrative yet overstuffed this likely won't matter for the viewers who want the nostalgic hit or people who are simply happy to see Katon reprise his role there's some fun to be found in the film's Nostalgia to be sure but Tim Burton no longer has the modest command of Storytelling that used to hold his stylistic and tonal exercises together now he's just got the tone and the style and the Nostalgia to feed the storytelling so when he's handed a bad script like he is here he can't reconcile its disperate parts into a seamless hole Katon might still have the juice but Burton does not beetle be juice Beetlejuice is a 2024 American Dark Fantasy comedy horror film directed by Tim Burton from a screenplay by the writing team of Alfred go and Miles Miller based on a story by go Miller and Seth Graham Smith a sequel to Beetlejuice 1988 and the before his disappearance in South America following the funeral services Rory proposes to Lydia which she accepts causing astred to flee and meet Jeremy who invites her over prior to the wedding on Halloween astred learns that Jeremy is a ghost seeking her help to restore his life he promises astred that she can reunite with her father if she assists him the two enter the afterlife after astred recites an incantation from the handbook for the recently deceased discovering Jeremy's past as a murderer Lydia reluctantly calls upon Beetlejuice for his help in retrieving ASD Beetlejuice agrees but demands that Lydia marry him allowing him to stay in the mortal world and evade his vengeful ex-wife and murderer Dolores Monica beluchi in the afterlife Lydia consents to the marriage and Beetlejuice and Lydia are transported into the Afterlife train station in an attempt to stop Astrid from boarding the Soul Train which transports Souls into the Beyond by reciting the incantation Astrid was tricked into switching places with Jeremy in order for him to regain his life while being escorted to the platform Astrid notices one of the station's employees is Richard who rescues both Lydia and astred and and helps them return to Winter River Beetlejuice who has sent Jeremy to Hell enlists deia's help to return to the mortal world after she was sent to the Afterlife by a snake bite at a nearby Church Lydia and ASD arrive as Rory Waits at the altar Beetlejuice with deia's assistance hijacks the wedding injecting Rory with truth serum to reveal his intention to marry Lydia for her money an enraged Lydia punches Rory knocking him out out as Beetlejuice prepares to marry Lydia an angry Dolores arrives to confront him using the handbook as a guide Astrid unleashes a sandworm into the church which Beetlejuice deflex causing it to eat Dolores and Rory hole the ceremony is thwarted as Lydia and ASD reveal that Beetlejuice violated the rules of the handbook and his own contract causing him to inflate and burst afterward Lydia and astd reassure their love for deia as she transitions to the afterlife where she reunites with Charles before boarding the Soul Train for heaven sometime later Lydia films the final segment of her last episode of ghost house opting to spend time with astred the two venture to Dracula's castle and astred becomes smitten with an employee Vlad astred and Vlad eventually get married with Lydia watching from the side despite this Lydia continues to have nightmares about Beetlejuice including a dream in which astd Bears beetlejuice's child traumatized a startled Lydia wakes up in a shock State cast Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice pronounced Beetlejuice an afterlife ghost and bio Exorcist who wants to marry someone from the realm of the living both Keaton and director Tim Burton opted to keep the character as politically incorrect as he was in the original film due to their love for that character trait with Burton deeming Beetlejuice as a character whose whole point is that he does not undergo any character Arc or development never evolving when know a riter as Lydia Deets the former Gothic teenager who nearly married Beetlejuice in 1988 now mother of ASD Deets and Hostess of the ghost house with Lydia DEET show hoping to keep the first film's Essence Ryder never thought her character would become a mother but a Spiner in the maand residences attic but Lydia's daughter astd justifies such change Katherine Ohara as deia Deets Lydia's stepmother Astrid's stepm auor and Charles deetz's Widow now the hostess of a real art show located in a Soho London Gallery Jenna Orga as astd Deets Lydia's teen daughter and deia's step granddaughter Justin thuru as Rory Lydia's current boyfriend and a television producer Monica beluchi as Delores beetlejuice's ex-wife who in life was a mysterious woman and a soul sucking witch who poisoned Beetlejuice several centuries earlier during the black plague before he killed her with an axe in retaliation Willam dafo as wolf Jackson a ghost detective who in life was a be movie action star Burn Gorman as father Damian a reverend in Winter River Danny DeVito as a janitor who committed suicide by drinking varnish Arthur KY as Jeremy a young boy who is Astrid's love interest Philipe Kates is Vlad a young man dressed as a vampire in Transylvania Santiago cabara as Richard Astrid's father and Lydia's former husband who disappeared in South America Additionally the character of Charles Deets appears in the film portrayed and voiced by an unconfirmed actor in addition to using the likeness of original actor Jeffrey Jones through various means including archival photos paintings and an animated sequence that describes the character's death the character's death was inspired by a nightmare of Burton development after the success of Beetlejuice 1988 a sequel was fast tracked by the Jeff and film company two Beetlejuice sequel scripts were commissioned in 1990 the first Beetle Juice in love was penned by screenwriter Warren scaran who did a heavy rewrite on the first film's script in scaran Sequel Beetlejuice meets Leo who tragically plummets to his death while proposing to his girlfriend Julia on the Eiffel Tower when Leo enters the afterlife Beetlejuice escapes to the world of the living and pursues Julia scarin died shortly after turning in his first draft of the in love script that same year Tim Burton hired Jonathan gems to write a potential Beetlejuice sequel titled Beetlejuice goes Hawaiian Tim thought it would be funny to match the surfing backdrop of a beach movie with some sort of German expressionism because they're totally wrong together gem said the story followed the Deets family moving to Hawaii where Charles is developing a resort they soon discover that his company is building on the burial ground of an ancient Hawaiian Kahuna the spirit comes back from the afterlife to cause trouble and Beetlejuice becomes a hero by winning a surf contest with magic Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder agreed to do the film on the condition that Burton directed but both he and Katon became occupied with Batman Returns 1992 Burton was still interested in Beetlejuice goes Hawaiian in early 1991 impressed with Daniel waters's work on Heather's 1989 which also Stars Winona writer Burton approached him for a rewrite however he eventually signed Waters to write the script for Batman Returns by August 1993 producer David jeffin hired Pamela Norris Troop Beverly Hills Saturday Night Live to rewrite Warner Bros approached Kevin Smith in 1996 to rewrite the script though Smith turned down the offer in favor of Superman lives Smith later joked that his response was didn't we say all we needed to say in the first Beetlejuice must we go Tropical in March 1997 gems released a statement saying the Beetle Juice goes Hawaiian script is still owned by by the Jeff and Company and it will likely never get made you really couldn't do it now anyway Winona is too old for the role and the only way they could make it would be to totally recast it Burton had considered several other sequel ideas as well over the years saying in 2024 we talked about lots of different things that was early on when we were going Beetle Juice and the Haunted Mansion Beetlejuice Goes West whatever lots of things came up but all those initial scenarios set in Hawaii the wild west or Paris France were all scrapped in September 2011 Warner Bros hired Seth Graham Smith who collaborated with Burton on Dark Shadows and Abraham Lincoln vampire Hunter both 2012 to write and produce a sequel to Beetlejuice Graham Smith signed on with the intention of doing a story that is worthy of us actually doing this for real something that is not just about cashing in is not just about forcing a remake or a reboot down someone's throat he was also adamant that Katon would return and that Warner Bros would not recast the role Burton and Keaton had not officially signed on but would return if the script was good enough Graham Smith met with Katon in February 2012 we talked for a couple of hours and talked about big picture stuff it's a priority for Warner Bros it's a priority for Tim Michael's been wanting to do it for 20 years and he'll talk to anybody about it who will listen in November 2013 Ryder hinted at a possible return for the sequel as well by saying I'm kind of sworn to secrecy but it sounds like it might be happening it's 27 years later and I have to say I love Lydia DEET so much she was such a huge part of me I would be really interested in what she is doing 27 years later Ryder confirmed that she would only consider making a sequel if Burton and Katon were involved in December 2014 Burton stated it's a character that I love and I miss actually working with Michael there's only one Beetlejuice we're working on a script and I think it's probably closer than ever and I'd love to work with him again in January 2015 writer Graham Smith told Entertainment Weekly that the script was finished and that he and Burton intended to start filming Beetlejuice too by the end of the year Year and that both Katon and Ryder would return in their respective roles in August 2015 on Late Night with Seth Mayers Ryder confirmed she would be reprising her role in the sequel in May 2016 Burton stated it's something that I really would like to do in the right circumstances but it's one of those films where it has to be right it's not a kind of a movie that cries out for a sequel It's not the Beetlejuice Trilogy so it's something that if the elements are right because I do love the character and Michael's amazing as that character so yeah we'll see but there's nothing concrete yet in October 2017 Mike vukadinovich was hired to rewrite the script in April 2019 Warner Bros stated the sequel had been shelved pre-production in February 2022 a sequel was announced again this time produced by Brad Pit Studio plan b Entertainment alongside Warner Bros Burton stated in October 2022 that he was not involved in the project but backtracked Days Later saying nothing is out of the question Burton ultimately returned as the film's Director and tried to strip everything from the story to go to the basics of working with good people actors and puppets feeling that the project made him reflect why he liked making movies Burton came up with the film Story upon thinking about Lydia Deets a character of his with whom he connected as a teenager wondering what could have been of her life after the first film's events and how her family life could have developed turning from a cool teenager into a fedup adult who hosts a popular medium related show titled ghost house with Lydia Deets whose daughter hates her Burton credited the years of his life since the original film's release as the reason he couldn't do Beetlejuice Beetlejuice until then having experienced many of those things himself finding the project a very personal movie starring a weird family in a familyfriendly and emotional story of three generations experiencing basic things everyone feels in life when growing up Burton and Katon agreed to not use excessive amounts of technology and sought to make the film feel handmade with a plot likened to Willy Wonka's psychedelic boat ride in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory 1971 that takes very big swings like unhinged and uncontrollable fantas magoria and Burton's head being dumped out onto the screen Katon felt the film's story to be stronger than its predecessors with more of a connection to the audience in terms of characters finding Beyond delightful things he wasn't ready for while Ryder confidently expressed her belief that the film exceeded her high expectations and expected every generation to find something they can appreciate from the film in March 2023 it was reported by variety that Jenna Orga who previously worked with bir Burton on the 2022 Netflix series Wednesday was in talks to play astd Deets Lydia's daughter while Burton was now expected to direct the film Ortega and Ryder formed an insane and intense Bond as they worked together with the latter seeing a younger but a thousand times cooler version of herself in the former while sharing Hobbies like both being ciles and regarding the experience of working with each other special resulting in Ortega developing her own performance for ASD in May Danny Elfman announced he was returning to compose the score for the sequel while it was also revealed Ortega was confirmed to Star and Wednesday creators Alfred go and Miles Miller wrote the script Justin theu Burn Gorman Arthur KY Philipe Kates and Willam dafo would also be added to the cast in undisclosed roles with daffos being described as an afterlife officer dafo later explained to variety at the marish film festival that his character is an afterlife police officer who used to be a be movie action star in life before dying in an accident with his skills leading him to become a detective within the realm he later regretted sharing those details about his character fearing that Burton may get angry with him for revealing a few spoilers from the film Katherine Ohara reprises her role as dilia Deeds as well as Monica beluchi joining the cast as beetlejuice's wife Dolores Ken Atwood a frequent collaborator of Burton was announced to be working on the costume design for the film Atwood disclosed that Beatle Juice's striped suit would return in the film as it is trademark to the character's quintessential appearance in the same way the titular character of lwis Carroll's novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland 1865 Sports and iconic blue dress though Keaton disagreed and preferred Beetle juices burgundy tuxedo Ohara later confirmed that the film would include Harry bont's 1955 song day o the Banana Boat Song which was featured in the first film Katon insisted that Beetlejuice had limited screen time in the film like the first movie saying the idea was no no no you can't load it up with Beetlejuice that'll kill it the Beetlejuice character doesn't drive the story as much as he did in the first one he's more part of the storyline in this one as opposed to the first one which is a case of this thing comes in and drives the movie a little bit filming filming was originally scheduled to begin in mid 2022 later it was delayed to an expected start date of May 10th 2023 taking place in London if the 20123 wga strike did not lead to another delay in mid 2023 filming was suspended in July due to the 2023 sag after strike Burton described the film which he enjoyed making as being 99% done it had two days of production left which was interrupted with Ortega being contacted to continue filming 4 days after the strike had ended filming resumed on November 16th 2023 in Melrose Massachusetts and wrapped in Vermont on November 30th 2023 post production by March 2024 Katon had seen a completed rough cut of the film and stated that further editing would occur thereafter later that month it was stated in The Hollywood Reporter that Jeffrey Jones would not reprise his role as Charles Deets in the film his character being revealed in the trailers to have been killed off in April Gina Davis stated she would not be returning as Barbara maidin due to her age saying our characters were stuck the way they looked when they died forever so it's been a while it's been a minute in August Burton would confirm via people that Davis and Alec Baldwin didn't return for Beetlejuice Beetle Juice as the mands weren't needed for the story he wanted to tell which he admitted that he personally couldn't have done in 1989 due to it focusing on three generations within the Deets family to explain their absence Burton stated that the film would reveal the maand used a loophole to leave their former house during the interim between this film and the original production VFX supervisor is Angus by curtain working with VFX producer Alex bnell supported by visual effect Studios frame store one of us and buff release Beetlejuice Beetlejuice on the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes 77% of 230 critics reviews are positive with an average rating of six 510 the website's consensus reads Michael Keaton's devious Poltergeist still has plenty of juice left in this mad cap return to form for Tim Burton marrying Charming practical effects and ghoulish gags to provide a fun fun time Metacritic which uses a weighted average assigned the film a score of 62 out of 100 based on 58 critics indicating generally favorable reviews manol aargus of The New York Times called the film a fun but less edgy sequel future when asked about a potential third film Burton said let's do the math dot dot dot it took 35 years to do this so I'll be over 100 but I guess it's possible with the Advent of science these days but I don't think so Beetlejuice Beetlejuice movie review Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is an overstuffed toy bag of a movie every minute or two the director digs into the bag and produces a new toy it's a return to form for director Tim Burton only in the sense that like Burton early in his career it's not interested in form except at the immediate level of of the image and the scene that's not a complaint by the way it's an observation this movie is fun in direct proportion to how wanting and tossed off it seems one of the major characters is a blood squirting torso that lost its head in a shark attack there are animated creatures and one clamation style sequence dreams within dreams multiple full-on musical numbers several promise estats of marriage and a deranged final sequence that ranks with Burton's most decadent displays of pure inspiration the movie seems to be having fun seeing how far it can push the content limits of a PG13 rating it probably deserved an R for graphic violence alone perhaps it was saved from that fate by being outrageously funny like Itchy and Scratchy cartoons on The Simpsons what do you need to know really wono ryer returns as Lydia Deets the goth teen who was forced to marry the trickster demon beetle juu aeka beetle juice AKA Michael Keaton in the 1988 original Lydia is now a widowed professional medium in her 40s who hosts a popular new york-based TV series called ghost house with Lydia Deets and has a teenage daughter named Astra Jenny Orga of Burton's Netflix series Wednesday who loathes her Lydia has a boyfriend named Rory Justin theu who is also her producer and credits himself with keeping the ex pillhead Lydia on the straight and narrow even though they both step off Lydia's step-grandmother dilia Deets Katherine ohar has become a multimedia Gallery artist and influencer which seems perfect considering who she was in the first movie they all end up back in Winter River after the sudden death of deia's husband Charles played in the original by Jeffrey Jones and of course they get entangled with Beetlejuice facing his own existential threat courtesy of rampaging ex-wife Dolores Monica beluchi lores is a soul sucking demon who married the juice as he calls himself back in the 14th century when he was robbing the graves of plague victims she wants to reunite with him and is headed for his section of the underworld to seal the deal Dolores is less of a character or even a plot element than a means for Burton and co-c Screen writers Alfred go and Miles Miller also of Wednesday to give the movie regular jolts of macabra energy and she does a hacked up cour who is introduced reassembling herself limb by limb with a staple gun dolores's visual presentation will remind Burton completists of a character from his best work as a producer Henry celix The Nightmare Before Christmas the patched together rag doll Sally there's also a love story kind of between astd and a local boy Arthur KY of House of the Dragon who invites her for a date on Halloween night and correctly notes that she's dressed as scientist Marie Cur after she'd begun to die of radiation poisoning the teen romance sections of beetle juu Beetlejuice are retro80s Burton par Excellence evoking the intoxicating sensations of youthful attraction driven by banter music and shared stories there could have been more of this stuff it's so terrific thanks to KI and Ora's not perfect performances but also the way Burton stages and Frames their interactions that it could have been the centerpiece of a whole other film Katon is Sensational as always he slips into beetlejuice's rancid skin again with the prideful Glee of one of those blessed old guys who keeps his prom tuxedo in a hall closet and can put it on any time he likes and have it fit perfectly but of the main returning cast members Ryder is the standout she conveys a sweetly glum and fragile presence somebody who's been through a lot and changed as a result she Taps into the sense of a woman so dragged down by her mistakes and missed opportunities and random tragedies that she can't seem to get off the tracks she's been on for years now or even change direction her reemergence as a star thanks mainly to the80s Nostalgia Fest stranger things is one of the best things to happen as a result of Netflix's ongoing cultural dominance she plays a seasoned slightly battered grown-up here but her fluty croak of a voice still has music in it she's wonderful with THU who has that John Ham gift of being able to play a self-involved twit without telegraphing that he's not actually that guy the various elements don't cohere so much as coexist and sometimes jostle against each other there are moments where the contrivances required to put characters in the same scene so they can communicate important information to each other are so awkward and obligatory that Burton seems to lean into them and turn them into a private joke between him and the audience the building out of the underworld as an alternative Society with upside down rules and morality is funny but not hugely original the satire on bureaucratic office jobs and officials rubber stamping forms feels time warped in from the80s and not in a good way but it's not a huge drag because that world is really just a huge Twisted playground for Burton returning costume designer Colleen Atwood a Burton movies will come out of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice stunned by the newness of what they've just witnessed this is Burton doing Burton from the analog era to the extent that such a thing is still possible in 2024 Burton started out as an animator and carved out an identity as something like the Federico felini of high school golf his Persona was somewhere between an illustrator a magician and a prop comic at some point in the mid90s he seemed to force himself to care a bit more about plot albeit with spectacular and welcome regressions like Mars Attacks but the films gradually came to seem too polished and calculated and once he gave himself over to CGI the movies mostly lost that handmade seeming feeling it's fun to watch him take this project as an opportunity to return to his 80s Roots as a director whose passion was building worlds indulging his sensibility and trying to get away with as much as he could the closing credits list probably hundreds of puppeteers and props to be a superstar who ruled over his own weirdly Ardent world of ghoulish mockery Burton at 26 had already directed Pee-wee's Big Adventure but Beetle juu though in some ways a ramshackle cartoon of a movie had a force at work in it you might say that Beetle Juice was a Vibe the vision of the afterlife as a waiting room of wax museum Horrors the moment when those shrimp leapt off the plate in the spectacular de o musical demonic possession sequence and Michael Keaton's feral jabbering Groucho marks meets oozing d performance as Beetlejuice the grat bio Exorcist the movie channeled a spirit that wasn't just loopy it was hilariously insane it's the nature of the brand that Tim Burton became that as you watch Beetlejuice Beetlejuice his let is revisit all that 36 years later because why the hell not sequel that opened the Venice film festival today you can just about see him at work putting the pieces together trying to recapture the old Burton cracked Gothic lightning in a bottle one of those pieces is the image of Monica beluchi as dores a ghost who's been hacked to pieces and is laying dormant in different boxes as she literally pulls and Staples her body parts together sawed off torso legs and arms face that's been cut in half all to the tune of the BG's tragedy which sort of half makes sense I guess there's supposed to be something tragic about her but that mostly just works as an ideal demented needle drop she then wanders around around sucking out the souls of the Dead which renders them really dead did I mention that she's beetlejuice's ex-wife it's complicated Beetlejuice Beetlejuice begins awkwardly with Burton setting up his characters as if they were part of some Beetle Juice board game as it goes on though the pieces start to come together in much the same way that Dolores face and body does the movie is just a lightweight Riff on Beetle Juice a piece of fan service really it doesn't give you the full Monster kitch jolt that the original film had yet there's good fan service and bad and as stilted and gim cracky as it can sometimes be I had a pretty good time at Beetle Juice Beetlejuice Burton's once skewed way of looking at the world long ago got baked into hours that's one reason he has struggled at times to inject his movies with that same buzz but if Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is mostly a lark like the current hit Broadway version of Beetlejuice part of what the new movie delivers is honest Nostalgia for the moment when Burton's clown Spirit from Hell sensibility still had the kick of shock value as a result it's one of those sequels that spends a lot of time looking back the film opens with a tingle of Danny elfman's jumpy ghost music along with another flyover shot of the picturesque town of winter River Connecticut where wi knower writers Lydia Deets the former goth teen who interfaced with the spirit world world is now a psychic mediator who hosts her own hunt for the Paranormal television show entitled ghost house Lydia still wears her hair in spiky bangs but where you might expect her to have relaxed into middle age the way Ryder plays her she's more distraught than ever maybe that's because her TV producer boyfriend Rory Justin theu is a fatuous SAS who speaks in Progressive therapeutic bromides to cover his flagrant opportunism or maybe it's because her daughter as Jenna Ora has nothing but contempt for her mother's ghostly preoccupations which she thinks are sheer delusion cine O'Hara winningly overd as ever his back is dilia Lydia's narcissistic artist stepmother and to spin past any awkwardness over former cast member Jeffrey Jones who is now a convicted sex offender his character Charles Lydia's father and deia's husband is given a clamation segment that ends with him being chomped by a shark the character then spends the rest of the movie skullking through the afterlife as a blood spurting trunk without a head as for Keaton's title pest he keeps popping up in Lydia's sight lines and it's not long before he's summoned Katon at 73 invests him with that same obscene nashing energy and throwaway scuz ball cunning and in fact Beetlejuice figures out another way to coerce Lydia into marrying him it's all hooked to the fact that Astrid has fallen for a sweetheart of a dude in her class Arthur kti who turns out to have a very dark Secret the movie doesn't come entirely alive until the scene where Beetle Juice acting as Lydia and Rory couple's therapist literally spills his guts then produces an infant version of himself a baby as disquieting as the crawling on the ceiling one in train spotting a Gambit like this exists mostly for its own agreeably sick sake and that in its way is the Beetlejuice aesthetic Tim Burton making this stuff up simply because it tickles his naughty fancy at least one thing he has made up is a bit cringe the punning use of Soul Train complete with a boogie down Chorus Line of 70s Funk dancers which in the movie becomes a train for dead Souls get it and the plot has even more of the balsa wood quality that the Alec Baldwin Gina Davis ghost plot in Beetle Juice had after a while though the conceits start to gather Gusto and chime together whether it's Bob the popey shrunken head in a full bodysuit presiding over an office Army of Bobs or Willam daffo digging into the cheesiness of wolf Jackson a former be movie actor now with the left side of his brain exposed the result of a grenade accident who heads the afterlife police force but does it like he's still acting in a bad movie or The film's Cheeky homages to the black and white era of Mario Bava and to the dreamy anxiety of Carrie or for the hypnotic gem that Burton brings off in the climactic wedding sequence by using Richard Harris's rendition of MacArthur Park for a sequence of blist out lip syn lunacy Beetle Juice Beetle Juice is no Beetle Juice but in the end it's got just enough Burton juice positive elements without giving too much away ASD makes a serious mistake a mistake so serious that it lands her in the afterlife's Nether world and nearly forces her aboard the one way A soul train to destinations unknown but Lydia risks life and death and some other serious consequences to save her little girl and that as you might imagine does wonders for their relationship spiritual elements ASD believes her mother's a Huer a fraud I believe in things that I can see she tells Jeremy science facts but if ASD initially believes that the immortal soul and life after death is is just so much Hokum Beetlejuice Beetlejuice takes pains to prove otherwise we arguably spend more time with the dead than with the living here and the afterlife they inhabit is a strange Place indeed Beetlejuice Beetle juu suggests that the grimy Twisted necropolis we see is more or less a holding area the dead eventually barded the so train to the great beyond featuring locals such as the allision fields and the fires of damnation we see one person fall to his fiery Doom naturally or unnaturally we see scads of dead people wander about to the afterlife has a great many rules to follow to all outlined in the handbook for the recently deceased as such characters utter strange incantations sign contracts in blood stamp forms and break bylaws Lydia describes Beetlejuice as a trickster demon and there's certainly something diabolical about the guy when he crosses himself for instance Beetlejuice sets himself on fire but we also learn that he and Dolores were once regular all people albeit people who got hitched by way of a dark ceremony that involved drinking each other's blood biting the heads off chickens and sacrificing a goat topside superficial Christianity still seems to hold some sway in Winter Grove we repeatedly see The Village Church and meet its priest who speaks generally and confusingly about heaven and hell and the extended climactic scene takes place in a sanctuary decorated by a huge cross deia wears a cross around her neck during her late husband's wake too though her own spiritual leanings seem to be more of a make your own New Age Faith type thing the same could be said for both Lydia and Rory as well who met at some sort of a hip metaphysical grief Retreat ASD profanely refers to Rory's Vibe as new age bull de IIA performs a makeshift grief ceremony at Charles grave site instead of hymns children sing the Banana Boat Song at Charles memorial service a wedding seems to take place in a church we read a reference to a Ouija board sexual and romantic content in a flashback Beetlejuice and Dolores engage in passionate love making we see clothes comically fly into the air and a few humorously suggestive movements in Shadows but nothing nothing critical is seen in the present dore's dismembered body reassembles itself in the process of becoming fully whole we see quite a bit of her cleavage and thighs as she Staples herself back together Beetlejuice occasionally Lear at women and Astrid finds one of his old Flyers that market him as a love sex doctor yua astd says deia's latest avanguard art project involves turning her own body into a canvas we don't see anything critical but a shapely but IL defined nude manquin Grace is one of her exhibit cubes various characters Kiss one another ASD spends some unsupervised time in Jeremy's room though nothing outside a kiss takes place there deia Mourns Charles whom she calls her horny handman beetlejuice's past romance with Lydia as documented in the original 1988 film forms a central Nexus in which this story revolves of course and while Beetle Juice Beetle juu doesn't dwell on the age difference we should remind you that Lydia was just 16 years old at the time violent content Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Delights in its running gags and the biggest and most gag Worthy is its parade of walking corpses all of which display their grotesquely humorous modes of demise it had be impossible to catalog them all here but here are some notable examples Charles as we mentioned died in a plain crash shark attack we see a clation reenactment of the tragic event complete with a birst of blood covering the camera at the end he's an ancillary character here two walking around the afterlife sans's head and torso we see his bloody guts contained in the rest of the guy's body like Cheerios in a cereal bowl and when he talks and yes he does talk blood spurts from an extended artery and onto walls floors and people another notable character walks around with part of his brain and facial muscles exposed though the guts here are far more cartoonish and as mentioned Dolores stapled most of herself back together with a staple gun several dead people hang out in the afterlife's interminable waiting room including a surfer or rather the upper body of a surfer a seriously charred Santa Claus whom we assume met his demise in a chimney and a competitive eater whose mouth is stuffed with with hot dogs perhaps the most horrible weighty though might be a cat lady who's been snacked on by her favorite felines a full leg bone is exposed and the tabies are still chewing on other parts of her as well someone walks around with a javelin or Harpoon sticking through her neck several characters have shrunken heads with stitched together mouths Piranha's chew on a guy in perpetuity someone apparently died from an egg beater to the eye a power saw Ador the face of another there are Fates worse than death though Dolores literally sucks whatever life is left out of several folks and walks away leaving them looking like deflated balloons this it seems makes dore's victims really dead also worth noting a newborn version of Beetlejuice is birthed a couple of times quite messily in one sequence he gnaws the mother's leg bloody in another he murders the attending doctor in a sem ly R-rated spray of blood ASD nearly crashes into several cars before thuing into a tree a giant sandworm attacks and in one case seems to devour a person or two surreal guts are literally spilled bat wings appear to Flap out of beetlejuice's face someone drinks poison we learn that one character is a murderer asid reminisces about the age inappropriate costumes because they were too gory not too sexually inappropriate that her father designed for her for Halloween someone's bitten by poisonous snakes and so on crude or profane language we hear one FW one bleeped fword and another incomplete fword that melds into a different profanity also on tap a dozen's words and a smattering of other profanities including a crap H and PS said God's name is misused seven times three with the word DN and Jesus name is abused once drug and alcohol content it's suggested that Lydia and Rory both take prescription pills for recreational use when Rory sees that Lydia is hiding a vial of such pills he dumps them into a trash and then digs them out so they can both partake this is the last time I dig pills out of a trash can for you understand he scolds characters drink wine Jeremy confesses to sneaking six packs of beer up to his Treehouse behind his father's back the town's priest father Damian seems to have a barely concealed drinking problem other noteworthy elements Beetlejuice exudes rude sounding noises at times and he talks about needing to use the restroom ASD and Lydia have a difficult relationship so much so that when Lydia calls astred the name that pops up on her phone is alleged mom characters lie and misle lead conclusion the entertainment industry has always been just that an industry while some films indeed aspire to be art the business itself is predicated on costs profits and the bottom line sure most filmmakers want to make good movies but the folks who sign the checks they want successful movies and in the Quest for the next big success studios are dusting off successful but aged films sometimes 20 30 or 40 years old and sequel ising them but to borrow and twist a line from Jurassic Park a film all about bringing old things back to life just because a sequel can be made should it Beetlejuice Beetlejuice feels like pure fan service director Tim Burton is still the Cinematic master of Edward gory style Gloom and gaffas the titular antihero whose name is actually spelled Beetlejuice is as crass and wacky as ever the supporting cast displays an entertaining level of dysfunction yes there's even a dance number akin to the famed Banana Boat number from the original Beetlejuice featuring possessed performers outsized dance moves and an earworm song in all their derivative glory for those who have a soft spot for the original Beetle Juice the sequel will scratch that scabby itch but when you scratch a scab There Will Be Blood oh yes if a drama contained the same level of blood and gore as Beetle Juice Beetle juu I suspect that it would have been rated R but because the film Embraces a macabra sense of humor the sensors give it a pass and indeed some of the Uki elements we see here do feel cartoonish but others can feel pulled straight out of a bloody wince and turnaway exorcism movie and while we're on the subject of exorcisms let's not forget that Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is at least according to Lydia a demon and we laugh with and even root for that demon throughout much of the movie as a villain he plays at best third fiddle here the film is predicated on calling on infernal players to do their mortal will and at their own mortal Peril this is a fan story without much moral or a whiff of regard for real spirituality that's an issue worth thinking through I'm not immune to the dower charms of Tim Burton but Beetlejuice Beetlejuice like its namesake can be deceptively problematic and I'd think long and hard before calling it up more details just over 10 years ago in the wake of the disastrous Alice in Wonderland liveaction remake that set off the past decade of nostalgic slop from Disney I called Tim Burton a hack in the years since I've softened my STS this is partially out of the recognition that Burton is a talented stylist albeit one whose films are only as strong as their scripts as well my affection for his early Works has grown namely his Batman movies and his goofy afterlife family comedy Beetlejuice thus I'm not surprised to find myself thinking that Beetlejuice Beetlejuice the legacy sequel to The 1988 classic is Burton's best work in a decade although that's a pretty low bar it's fun to watch Michael Keaton in his Gonzo juice mode and to catch up with Winona Riders and Katherine O'Hara's daughter and stepmother Lydia and dilia deets unfortunately Burton's hackish inability to elevate a bad script is still here nothing better personifies the film's lackluster storytelling than Monica Baluchi's Soul sucker Delores the ex-wife of Bal juices who escapes from imprisonment in the afterlife reconstitutes her chopped up body and heads out on a roaring Rampage of revenge against the man who married her and happened to kill her like Baluchi's villain Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is aesthetically appealing campy fun but Frankenstein it's a movie with competing plots almost no narrative momentum and no ordinary people to bounce all the madness off of leaving the end result a messy decently fun if middling time at the movies in the film we catch up with Keaton's bju in the afterlife and riter Lydia Deets in the world of the living Beetlejuice is apparently back up to his old tricks par for the course for a resuscitated franchise working as a bio Exorcist now operating out of an office manned by his buddies he met in the waiting room at the end of the first film many will recall Bob the man with the shrunken head when his ex-wife Dolores beluchi escapes from captivity he is pulled into a police investigation by ghost detective wolf Jackson Willam dafo and so he tries to find a way to escape the afterlife once again meanwhile in our world Lydia is the star of a popular paranormal reality show leveraging her ability to see ghosts to become a daytime star with elvar hair and a prining goofy producer boyfriend Rory played by an amusing Justin thuru when her Father Charles dies in a shark attack on the way back from a birding trip having sex offender Jeffrey Jones appear was out of the cards in this familyfriendly sequel Lydia reconnects with her stepmother Ohara deia and her estranged daughter Astra Jenna orda together they all head back to their mansion in Winter River the location of the first film for a funeral and wake and end up re-encountering bju and the Denis of the afterlife due to some bad luck and bad habits the setup of the plot takes around half of the running time which isn't such a bad thing when you want to catch up with the characters but it does make it hard to care too much about the apparent crises that are meant to drive the plot and as you can tell from the above plot description there's a lot going on in the film and and it's not easy to boil down the happenings to a simple log line like with the first film in the early going Baluchi's Dolores is introduced as a nightmarish villain and existential crises for Beetlejuice but she disappears for much of the runtime shunted off in favor of hijinks and some convoluted plotting involving Astrid and acute boy Arthur kti whom she meets in Winter River aside from the plot issues Beetlejuice beetle juu is lacking the most important element that made the first film a success Alec Baldwin and Gina Davis as the recently deceased couple who are so bewildered by the alternating strangeness and mundaneness of the afterlife Beetlejuice Beetlejuice attempts to have Ortega's astd serve as the audience surrogate but it never quite Works since astred serves the same narrative role as Lydia in the original film the beused child who's too smart for her parents thus the movie is lacking the normies to be bewildered at the Absurd situation and who can fuel the exposition that the audience needs to understand what's going on as well Baldwin and Davis had a hilarious gentle niess that was an essential Counterpoint to the grotesque world of Beetlejuice in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice there are no foils for the weirdos everyone is a weirdo now perhaps generating bewilderment is impossible in a legacy sequel when most of the audience will be familiar with the characters and the world and not need the EXP position to carry them along but surely there are many Teenage fans of Jenna Ortega who have never seen the first film but will seek this one out because of their affection for Wednesday Burton directed several episodes of that show and its creators Alfred go and Miles Miller are co-writers on this film those viewers have a character meant to be their age but one who lacks The Fish Out of Water perspective that can carry them through the story in a proper sense thus while the casting pitch the movie at gen Z audiences the film is really constructed for the older viewers who want to once again cackle at Keaton's madcap energy gffa at O'Hara's absurd onliners and Marvel at the production design that showcases new parts of Burton's Gothic afterlife unfortunately at this point no one should be surprised when a legacy sequel trades the opportunity to truly craft a new doorway into the story world for repetition and Nostalgia mining Beetlejuice be juice ends up being simultaneously limp as a narrative yet overstuffed this likely won't matter for the viewers who want the nostalgic hit or people who are simply happy to see Katon reprise his role there's some fun to be found in the film's Nostalgia to be sure but Tim Burton no longer has the modest command of Storytelling that used to hold his stylistic and tonal exercises together now he's just got the tone and the style and the Nostalgia to feed the storytelling so when he's handed a bad script like he is here he can't reconcile its disperate parts into a seamless hole Katon might still have the juice but Burton does not this film directed by Tim Burton screenplay by Alfred go Miles Miller Story by Alfred go Miles Miller Seth Graham Smith produced by Mark too d Gardner Jeremy claner tommmy Harper Tim Burton starring Michael Katon win owner
