strikeouts a lot more guys striking out today but when you consider having the ability to get that strike out particularly when you need it a Man On Third less than two outs situations where yeah maybe you're not a real high strikeout guy but just knowing you have the swing and Miss stuff in a big spot I think it's real critical and he's got it Alex call stands in now and watches strike one first pitch 720 ball one there one ball one strike [Music] off the plate inside and that's ball two strike three got him looking on the change up here's CJ Abrams to [Applause] hit just missed Holmes in his rookie season he features a four seam fast ball a cutter and he works in a change up one down base is empty that one in there across the letters [Applause] in there for a strike at the bottom you can't be mad at yourself after an bat like that one well there appears to be no problem settling in on the mound out there today it looks pretty tough to start this one punching out the first two an offense Chris that's having a hard time scoring runs right now yeah sometimes things just aren't going to click and unfortunately what happens is guys press they try to do a little bit more and they get out of their game You' got to let the game come to you if you chase it it's going to run from you so this is a team that just needs to calm down relax and understand that they're going to the jump I mean there's just no messing around right now still very early but we could see a pretty impressive outing here if the strikeouts keep coming in the way they are one thing you have to be aware of though is a high strikeout rate might impact the pitch count as the Innings Roll Along and now it's Luis Garcia swings through that one o and one [Applause] 01 second inning here no score pulled hard but it's a foul [Applause] ball and he'll Che base knock center field around second is w and they'll have Runners at the corners after a one out single pitch was on the outside didn't go the other way with it but still a nice job of using the big part of the field to find a hole no way he hits it that well if he hooks around the baseball there runner in scoring position now and a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game one away Runners at first and third up now for Washington Riley Adams swing in a miss and it's own and one all eyes on the double play ball in this spot no better way to get out of this [Applause] inning two on one out diving sto it first from his knees the throw over to Aria that's one back to the bitcher covering it's a double play nicely done and that'll do it so it's no runs two hits no errors and a runner left we go to the bottom of inning number two we're tied nothing [Applause] nothing we head to the bottom of the second so here's Murphy now this is a guy who is very highly regarded defensively fun to watch him control stuff behind the plate Good Game caller good at framing but it's that big arm that really stands hands out PS back to work that one's upstairs ball one and that is ball one and another ball when you got a catcher like this guy with a big arm like that behind the plate it really shuts down the running game that one down the line Zips it across and and a quick out number one batting the Le field Jer here's Jered Kellick taken high in the draft he's had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform but at some point that starts to go away and you've got to produce at the big league level and a breaking ball drops in for a strike in the air left field makes the grab on the run two down batting seven that's Short Stop here's Orlando Aria Aria and first off ring is fouled off the W to kick the pitch in the air pretty deep out to center field and makes the grab and the inning is over we'll move to the third with no score top half of the third inning and now up for Washington Jose tenna Jose tenna the wine of the pit and that's outside ball one on the ground Dives but it kicks off his glove he doesn't have a throw and they don't get an out on the play and here's the rookie center fielder right through there for a [Applause] strike tenna gets his lead at first to hit struck out looking in his first it back this is a guy who's in the line up first and foremost because of what he contributes defensively Chris and when you talk about preventing runs from being scored this guy is a big contributor the pitch and that one sliced foul I was always told it's hard to take you off the field when you play really good defense especially at a premier position and that's what he does grounded to third could be two over to marfield and they bounce into two already this one ends the third one hit in the inning but nothing more than that we move on to the bottom of inning number three no score set for the bottom of the third now in for the Braves Gio Ella [Applause] and a pitch the hitting's going to come around he's going to figure it out but right now his big asset is the way he plays the game on defense he one hit weakly on the ground tosses to first one up one down batting none the second baseman wh wh marfield up to the [Applause] plate first pitch throwing off a mound back to the leadoff spot in the Braves lineup and now the center fielder Michael Harris one misses just off the outside edge I think that was a strike two outs swing and a ball lifted left field W makes the catch and that'll do it on to the fourth still scoreless and we're back now it's the short stop CJ Abrams CJ AB Holmes back to work Abrams in his second season 23 years old a former first round pick back in 2019 line drive base hit right field man a board on the leadoff single get it in now B Andre chaparo digging in for the Nationals his first hit bat was a strike out and that's off the Inside Edge ball one well here's a good opportunity in this inning to get on the scoreboard after that leadoff hit and hardly order coming up right behind them this is where they need to get going kicks and fires late swing fouled off right-hander kicks deals ripped to third goes to Second for one and two what a play if you blink you might miss it and that's the magic of the 543 double play it happens so fast which is a huge reason why this is such a delicate sequence the entire play will break down if one person has bad timing that one pushed to the left and foul hean and there's a ball fourth inning underway no score [Applause] and another ball two balls one strike late that time and it's strike two instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended tied him up a little bit slightly up slightly in Dr ball right side marfield the first in time third out and that ends the frame one hit in the inning but no one left and Midway in the fourth we're tied territory you know these Braves just haven't produced as many competitive at bats as I'd like to see in this one I think things are happening a little quicker than this offense would like and we see it in the numbers they're hitting into a lot of outs early in the atat keeps the atat going with a foul ball the pitch that one well upstairs now one and [Music] two in the air to left Center gets under it calls it in and there's one away now B the designated Mar here's Marcelo Zuna scoreless here but now he's got to deal with a guy who's got power got to be careful when you're talking about a hitter with this type of Slug and these type of home run totals the wind in the pitch right field down the line and that one slices down one down base is empty B chase that time that one misses three and two [Music] now Ki andand swing and a ball lined out toward Center Dives but it falls and now it looks like extra bases not stopping he's going for three he's in there well that was one of those high percentage Advantage counts where batting averages are just so much higher that pitch came off the bat really well in the center field and he clearly put a nice swing on it and anytime you can get one to drop in out there you know you stung it pretty good because it seems like center fielders these days to a man these guys can run down just about everything and hit their way now let's see if they can put up the first run of the game runner at third with one gone and now it's going to be Matt Olen that one finds the zone and that's strike one and a strike on the outside edge I think ultimately you want to tie him up get the ball in on the plate so that he can't get the barrel to it makes the grab and there's two out made a bid for a nice opposite field double down the line beautiful swing but nothing you can do about the result third baseman are just used to handling Hot Shots like that here's Shawn Murphy grounded out his first time Murphy ball one no strikes the Braves looking to strike first we're here in the bottom of the [Applause] fourth slider misses outside well usually a high level of confidence when you're facing a young pitcher out there on the mound in this situation aead 2 has put himself in a really good spot two outs and that one fouled off and the pitch and fouled off it's Softly on the ground to third sends it across to First and that is that one left for Atlanta and we are still scoreless we go to the top of the fifth and here's the first baseman Juan YZ YZ and the right hter back to work swinging a foul back that's out of play well these gats as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the pl they've been chasing pitches outside the Zone all game and it's led to some frustrating moments they've been fooled quite a bit today just misses the mark outside the Zone really good take especially with two strikes that misses and the counts even a two great job of laying off those pitches down in the zone to even the count up at two and two such a better feeling for the hitter and a pop off right side foul territory Olen makes the grab one down the batter number two so taking in Luis Garcia one for one with a single so far first pitch doesn't find the Zone all tied up and we're at the top of the fifth on the ground to Third Ella to First in time and the first two set down at the top of the fif oh he's doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball good execution so two down now and here is Riley Adams he's over [Applause] one hit hard that gets through Joey gets on base and keeps it going now no waiting around right there he was ready to swing it on the first pitch once you get the ball by the pitcher there's a lot of base hits up the middle even on ground ball so a nice job to use that big hole and get himself a hit tenna for the second time and that's strike one Adams leads off first with two down to the inning now this is in the air down the line and a foul ball and one and two excellent arm action on that two strike change up just missed man he wanted that call just misses with that one and that's downstairs and outside number 30 waiting for a turn at the plate gets a piece and stays [Music] alive out of the left Center for a line drive base hit lead Runner around second and now they'll have Runners on the corners with two away two consecutive base hit H for this team showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way didn't get jumpy didn't try to pull the ball he let it get deep took the barrel right to it and then extend it through the swing for the line drive base hit a chance now to take the lead and at this point in the game that could be a deciding run Brian Snicker out of the Dugout and he's going to make a change Grant Holmes done for the night and as he heads for The Dugout we'll take a quick break new arm on the mound when we get back here comes a new arm for the Braves Spencer schwellenbach well at this point in the ball game we're talking about middle Innings and you need a little length out of this arm coming out of the bullpen we'll see just how many outs he's able to give his Skipper here's the center fielder he's over for [Applause] one that misses the zone and it's w too two on two outs no that's the ball could be some action here on this next pitch couple Runners on probably a challenge pitch coming that one catches the zone and it's two and [Applause] one lifted in the air right field makes the grab and that's the third out the Braves pen comes through in fine fashion home half of the fifth coming up and we still have no score bottom of the inning now the left fielder Jared Kelner you know this is kind of a tough match up as a left-handed hitter facing a left-handed pitcher what you tell yourself is I want to stay Square to the plate try to hit the ball over the short Stop's head that one ripped right center field and that should be extra bases makes the turn and heads for second and it's a leadoff double to start the bottom of the F Well a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle we saw the numbers coming into the ball game but all he's trying to do at this point is help his team [Applause] [Music] win so up next Orlando Aria 0 for one with a fly out to Center and the first pitch misses for ball one one ball no strike runner in scoring position nobody out last half of inning number five next offering is in for a strike swings through that one out in front that time man it's second that one out to right call pulls it in on the Run save gior shella steps in he's been really clutch with Runners and scoring position this season so they'll have to be extra careful in this matchup it's been such a good hitter with Runners and scoring position some guys just take it to another level for him right now at the plate it's like everyone else is in slow motion and he's in full speed first pitch [Applause] misses and that one fouled off the one-1 fou off down the right side Runner on at third one gone in the air left field wood coming on no trouble here puts it away for the out out number two yeah that was a wasted RBI opportunity but competitor like him he is looking forward to Mak it up for it in his next at here's the second baseman Whit marafield grounded out his first time up and that's B the Inside Edge one and0 that one called just inside I think and on the mound he trying to get a little bit of an explanation doesn't seem to be too bothered by it though but he clearly thought it clipped the corner grounder off the pitcher throwing the dirt and he can't come up with it and now they'll hustle out to check on him that was quite a shot he took as you see him down on a knee yeah clearly in some real pain but he will not want to come out of this game if he doesn't have to it's looking to me like he's going to try to shake it off and continue so the batting order turns over and the batter now Michael Harris that one's in there it's own and one he's pitching well but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes usually doesn't work out for success but you can never predict baseball leftand hitter weits that's out to center field on his way in Long Run nice grab and that ends the inning they get a run on two hits no errors and a man left five innings complete it's the Braves one and the Nationals nothing all set for the top of the six now it's the right fielder Alex call [Music] as he turns on the Rubber and with that good live arm delivers and that's in for a strike action in the pen down there Aaron bummer getting ready to come in for manager Brian Snicker Johnson getting cranked up as well outside low and that's ball one 111 [Music] and another ball home play umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit and the righty deals swing in a miss two balls two strikes well and those hitters count sometimes can be a little too aggressive and a good pitcher will play off of that he's got to get a better pitch to hit High Fly ball right field this could go the distance home run he powers that one out of here and we are all tied up it's one1 that swing completely changes the momentum of this game boo always scary for a pitcher when a guy can take a fast ball down the middle and hit it to the opposite field no holes in a swing like that and that time that ball was hit hard [Applause] so it's all tied up thanks to the home run now the number two hitter CJ Abrams in there for strike one well you just got to delete it you give up that lead off home run go back to work focus on this next batter nobody on nobody out and we're the top half of the sixth sliced the other way and foul with the big bats coming up and a home run already surrendered he's really going to have to execute against these next couple of batters and now one and two stays alive and a pitch that misses and it's two and two well this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the advat I'm sure there's sometimes where pitcher would rather just give up a first pitch single than have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter inside almost got him he should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with three hole hitter coming up if he's W and here's a 3-2 and he walked him that's a great at bat he saw a lot of pitches and earned a walk well that's a nice job of grinding out that at bats saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the walk very gritty Andres chaparo will hit next throw over to First Abrams gets back easily [Applause] in there in its own one Abrams on at first nobody [Applause] out next pitch not close up High Line Drive and out number one on the grab that's a big first out of the inning he showed off his skills catching the line drive but most importantly he kept the Run out of scoring position things would look a little different if he didn't make that play now it's the Nationals cleanup hitter James Wood one for two not close with that one ball one and he deals Runner takes off Pitch inside and safe it's a stolen base well with that kind of elite arm he has behind the plate man it's a pretty big deal when you can swipe a bag against this dude maybe more than anything it prevents teams from just testing him thinking that they can even steal the base but right here they successfully moved that runner up the scoring position good job pitches in there and it's two and one [Applause] good eye right there almost feel like he's frustrated a little bit he wants to be challenged Juan YZ up next one out and a runner at second and there's Ball Four pretty easy walk right there last pitch wasn't even much to think about go ahead run on Bas and now it's Juan YZ I'm curious how he decides to attack on the mound this guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year right through there for a strike the last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground but I wouldn't expect many pitches up in the zone they'll be pitching for a double play in this spot double steel now one hit to right Lano settles under it makes the grab for the second [Applause] out now it's the second baseman Luis Garcia smok to right but he's got got it but the Nationals are able to tie things up on this solo Homer all even now at 1-1 back at truis Mar ready to go for the last half of the inning laano comes up the hit here comes a pitch late on that fast ball you know these Braves finding ways to get on base but they still need help driving them home they only have one hit with runners in scoring position so a lot of squandered opportunities it's tough because those are moments you just can't get back the Lefty ready and a one one smash to Cent way back and you can forget it home run a massive home run it's 2-1 that one just sounded different yeah it might have been the loudest moment yet man my ears are ringing I can feel that swing from the [Applause] booth just an excellent swing all the way around and it had that sound coming off the bat that gets everyone's attention got a pitch to drive short to the baseball squared it up and the Back Spin carried it out of here number 53 getting loose as well highfly ball out at the left center field sizing this one up hauls it in and there's one away it's a good recovery though after giving up the Home Run not allowing it to stay in the head but going to work at the next hitter and a tough one at that Matt Olsson up to the plate for Matt a pretty impressive resume a first round pick back in 2012 the Braves extended him 8 years $168 million remember they traded for him right at the end of the lockout in 2022 middle of March so he didn't have a ton of time to get acclimated to his new team pulls that one foul one of the things from 2023 great counting stats for Matt Olsen but the hard hit rate was through the roof fast ball for a strike and now two and two that one ripped and that ball is gone second home run of the inning for and they tack on to their lead it's [Applause] 3-1 well you can see he was out front just a little bit maybe recognize the change of earlier but he got the bat head to it hooked it down the line and was able to keep it fair for a long home run really impressive manager out of the Dugout now and it looks like we'll see a change on the mound DJ hers is done and he's not going to be happy with himself new pitcher on the mound in a moment they turn things over to the South ball Mitchell Parker should be a good first match up for him here he's been doing a great job against right-handed bats so far this season they've had a lot of trouble squaring him up one out base is empty Shawn Murphy next up for the Braves right through there for a strike one down down base is empty that's a strike across the top of the Zone hit in the air left field wood in to his right pulls it down and he makes the catch that's out number two the left fielder number 24 Jared Jared Kellner now at the plate that misses and that's ball one really close pitch down around the knees there and you could see him asking where it missed probably doesn't agree but it appears he's ready to move on to the next pitch two down nobody on swings through that one for strike one 1-1 popped in the air left field he makes the grab and that'll do it but two round Trippers in this inning the long ball was working it's now a 3-1 ball game you're dialed into the show back here in Atlanta top of inning number seven here's the catcher Riley Adams schwellenbach back to work this one in the air center field Harris has a beat on it and puts the squeeze on that one and there's one away next to hit for the Nets Jose tenna ten and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter base is empty one away here in the top half of inning number seven on the ground out to short on the Run send it over to first that's it out now the C field and now the center fielder you talk about Elite defensive players especially in the middle of the diamond and this guy is at the top of the list started to swing held up yeah we go beyond just the you know Fielding percentage and you know what it looks like but the ability to have a range and you know close holes that you know are normally there against an average Defender but this guy is special and you can see it in his first step Quick Pass now a check swing at the 1-1 look down to First and Mike Filmore right on it he says he held up the [Music] pitch ground ball up the middle into the Outfield base hit and that turns the lineup over timing on the swing was good able to shoot the ball up the middle didn't Square it up as much as he probably would have liked but that's a good approach paying off and now they've got some speed on first so we'll see if they try to get him into motion now here is Alex call and a foul ball left side here goes the runner pitch in for a strike throw save sing he definitely showed off the wheels there yeah and it turned out to be a bang bang play stat cast gives us the data and that stolen base wasn't possible without that Sprint speed the tying run at the plate and a swing and a miss and that is that Nationals leave one and it remains a 3-1 ball game we're back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seven Jacob Barn he doesn't get a lot of strikeouts compared to other relievers so he relies on getting that soft contact and the defense doing work behind him they'll have to be in their toes with him on the bump and a pitch AR lays off down low as he digs in for the third time popped up one up one down the third baseman number 13 J gior orella to the plate Barnes a 6-2 righty 33 years old he joined the team as a free agent first pitch not close just missed well he's so great about hitting the ball the other way he gets those arms extended so right there just trying to straighten him up a little bit so he doesn't have as much outside PL coverage it gets down base hit so a man aboard now with one away now nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line you know hitters they take so many reps in the cage is working on going to the opposite field and it doesn't always translate into the game but right there it did and he did it perfectly now here is Whit [Applause] marfield flips the outside corner and the count one and one fast ball for a strike that one missed two ball two stri righty delivers in the air of the infield Garcia snags it and they're two down now batting centerel Michael Michael Harris next up for the Braves o for three with two fly outs and a ground out the mound to start the E Jesse Chavez has it pitched in the last three days CJ Abrams digging in for the Nationals CJ abs and here it comes right through there for a strike well in a bat can be a had pretty good timing on it just got underneath a little bit and popped it up James Wood the next to hit this kid picked up in a trade a lot was offered and given to get him but he's got a real high ball one tying run at the plate in for a strike and the count even at one well we call that key H holding even though it's right there and looks pretty good if he doesn't love it he's not going to swing that early in the count next offering is down low on the ground right side tosses to first that's a third out so one left for Washington and they still Trail it here three to one back now new pitcher on the mount as we roll into the bottom of the eighth number 53 pretty game so they're looking for quity pitches out of them right here got to do his best to keep the score right where it is it doesn't have the control command that day you can pretty much forget about it the Braves leading by two here at the top of the night line drive that's a base hit as a hitter there's even more pressure to take advantage of any mistake right yeah and you're hoping that you know somehow some way whether it's a hit by pitch a walk something bad happens because outside of that stuff is just just too good to fail up now for Washington Jose tenna that one's in there on one and he's got deception in his delivery and it's not that he's trying to deceive the hitters he just has this natural flow that makes it hard for hitters to pick the ball up it gets on them a little bit quicker than they anticipate even though they know what the velocity numbers are just missed one ball one strike chopped to the right side B to Second that's a double play the ball game is over after four wins in a row you start to think a little bit that you're on a roll and that's the momentum that just takes on a life of its own players start hitting up and down the lineup never know who's going to come up with the big hit who's going to come out of the bullpen and get the big outs but it's a good feeling
