David Mino I'm Shan bass you are in The Sweet Spot on this Thursday as we flip the calendar to August but we are still on the tennis courts in beautiful Oxnard California for Cowboys training camp 2024 and to start our show today we're very happy to sit down with Dallas Cowboys running back Royce Freeman who joins us at the table was that an okay intro yes sir no I appreciate y'all having me today because we always ask our guys hey what do you want to be intro to and you said whatever I listen to anything so we had some some pony there genuine a little you know next level but you didn't start dancing we could have had a dance party have been more guess so Southern California beautiful weather what's it like being a Dallas Cowboy after bouncing around to a few teams so far in your career it's amazing I mean just playing against them over the the numerous years I've been in the league and just knowing like the caliber of team they have and the expectations and to finally be a part of that is actually something uh pretty special how is uh how's this Camp different so far than uh your previous stops is there is there any big differences are they kind of all the same no I I think a lot of camps are very similar I mean some people go offside or some people you know stay uh at the facility but uh I think at the end of the day you're doing a great job out here in oxnar for us you know making sure that we're getting um the most out of our out of our camp you know going through it and getting as many reps as we can so we're building off that I'm always curious about free agency and just how the player deals with that you know it's it's your life it's where you're working it's where you're moving your family it's it's a big decision so as a free agent and being a free agent running back seeing how I guess the the new trend in the league is you know I I no offense but I think some Executives call running backs disposable or maybe not getting the same amount of money they they used to get how how is that in the prime of your career having to deal with all of those outside things that you know factor into where you're yeah it's different right I mean especially like you said like in a point of my career where you know that expectation is to be you know doing different things with your career or to be contributing in different ways you know um but at the same time uh just stay in the course um offseasons they could be pretty long or they could be short uh blessed to get an offseason uh here with the Cowboys you know be a part of otaa as an offseason training program so very grateful for that last year and you know previous years I I could have been waiting for a little bit a little bit of time you know especially with the perception of the devalued to the running back position but you know forever being grateful always working you know stay staying uh in training mode and getting after it and I mean um my wife the most supportive person I mean always giving her um many thanks for you know pushing me especially when times get a little tough you know especially when there's a lot of uncertainty but you know it always it always um Works itself out this is Royce Freeman of the Dallas Cowboys joining us I don't know if you've watched any of the offseason Hard Knocks with uh the New York Giants but they they talk about the the free agency process and you know with them losing saquin and hitting the market signing running backs and they've got their you know their tiers of running backs that they want to get and it it kind of surprised me how fast everything happens on that first day of free agency how it's okay let's make a phone call the guy's on the team I would assume you had some other interest uh some teams were looking at you in free agency was it uh did was there a big list calling you or what kind of jumped out about the Cowboys I mean it's neither here nor there as far as when it comes to that I mean at the end of the day I think a lot of people uh depending on their situation and their career have you know things that they're looking for uh for me uh it's been an opportunity to play an opportunity to contribute to a team I know I have a lot of value I can bring you know special teams being a third down back pass protection and and all the above played a lot of different roles throughout my career and um being a native to Dallas for for a little bit has definitely was a blessing to be able to stay at home and and now be able to play for for the Cowboys I think fans and maybe media like there's some some some change in the running back room obviously Zeke is back we know what Zeke's all about what's it been like in that room with uh all the dudes that have been brought in I mean Malik's been here Rico's been here Deuce is a young player how are you fitting into that group great I think this this room has a multitude of you know different type of backs personalities but also skill sets and I think we all at the same time still you know value what each other brings to the table but at the same time I think as a running back position the thing is that a lot of running backs feel that they can do everything you know and that's kind of what you want out of the guy that's in the back field Zeke you know obviously playing as long as he has a lot of Veteran leadership Rico a phenomenal player man he's he's you know out there always you know trying to get as much as he can set in the tone offensively so and then you know you have Malik deuce and all the rest of the guys in the room they also you know have been here before and have played uh for the team and you know know what it takes so it's great to be surrounded by guys like that who's the funniest guy in the uh running back room it feels like Zeke's always kind of been a goofball keeps people laughing I mean yeah I think I think everybody kind of plays off each other though but man there's some funny dudes man Zeke's funny Malik's funny Rico's funny I mean everybody especially let know how quickly and I think that's what people you know uh don't take into account with the new room obviously we're competing but just the camaraderie and what it takes to actually be you know uh in the running back room I discovered Royce Freeman when you were running the ball for the Oregon Ducks okay and yes sir go Ducks okay what's I know again you've been removed for a little while now the league they're a big 10 team now yeah the Pack 12 is is no more does that hurt your heart a little bit a little bit you know I guess it's a little similar not in a sense to what the pack 10 transition to pack 12 used to be right but uh to go to the Big 10 it's a little bit different you know it's going to be you know more touch and road for those guys playing some games but uh they're deservingly so I think they're very much deserving with um coach Lanning to get these Prime Time games uh and they're ready for it so I'm excited to see them I know a lot of people doubt the Ducks a lot of times you know because of you know our uniforms and all these extracurriculars but they play some really good football up there so I mean I'm excited for them to go out and show people was there ever a uniform you're looking at you're like we gotta wear what this week oh yeah no I think they were they all went together especially when the team actually was on the field and you saw it together it actually uh you know it was like man that's that was solid you know solo it it probably maybe looked a little funky but you see you know the flock out there everybody rocking the same same type of gear you're like I like this this is nice it seems like that's a pretty good recruiting tool also if it's kind of I don't know if that it was that way with you but if you're kind of comparing teams like all right these jerseys are awesome yeah I know it started when I was getting recruited but soon sooner rather than later everybody kind of caught on to that type of momentum Roy best of luck here with the Cowboys it's great talking to you I know you got a run you got you know running back NFL running back things to do some things to do yes no but I appreciate y'all having me and thank you for the best of wishes this season hey let's do this again all right that is Royce Freeman of your Dallas Cowboy nice to meet you great to meet you yeah let's do it again all right so we got a few minutes here let's uh I guess post game that a little bit and get into what we're going to do on the show today didn't have the big open we'll do that at the bottom of the hour
