Astros to sign Jason Heyward, Chas to AAA?

don't you love it when your former employer gives you a solid they're like you know what we want you to go to the World Series so we're going to go ahead and release you pay you your $9 million and you can go sign with the Houston Astros and hopefully go back to the World Series and win well we'll go and discuss this on this special edition of the lock on Astros podcast jel Diaz this is log on Astros hello and welcome to locked on Astros your daily Astros podcast here are your host Eric the man heis and BR H wheelhouse [Music] CH we are locked on Houston Astros and we hope that you join us for daily locked on Astros podcast my name is Eric Heisman you can find me on X Eric Doos find the show at lockdown Astros your team every day thank you for making us your first listen on Apple a Spotify where you listening your podcast go and check out the lock on Astros podcast and thank you for making us your first listen on Apple Odyssey just wherever you you you make us your first listen and become everyday or go and check out Michael Connor on the lock on Astros postcast as well I can't do a long episode I've got to go to class I gotta be at uh uh Lake in about uh 40 minutes so I've got a short amount of time but I wanted to say that Jason Hayward is coming to Houston while he may not be the same player he once was this is an important bat that the Astros got for basically nothing they didn't have to trade away any prospects they're signing him for league minimum so this is a great move for the Houston Astros is he gonna be the next great thing for the Astros who knows who thought that Ben gaml would be the big thing for the Astros right now the Astros are desperate they don't what's going on with Kyle Tucker Kyle Tucker was a reportedly sprinting in Outfield today so that's uh some positive notes I know that Chaz McCormick says that he is the one that has got to fix himself and who's going to be going down to Triple A we'll have to discuss this and more but yesterday the Dodgers they released um veteran when I say veteran this is a guy that's been around baseball for a while he's 35 years old and he was released and uh by the Dodgers are paying $9 million of his salary so the Astros only have to pay uh league minimum and so I think that he wanted to come to Houston possibly uh he felt like maybe the Astros had the best opportunity a to play and maybe he felt like the Astros had the opportunity to win because he seen this team play good baseball in the past and so uh this is a opportunity for the Astros without Kyle Tucker we have been kind of putting a patchwork work Outfield out there I know we have some uh we had when Alvarez is out there you have some offense but other than that it's been hit or miss with these guys and unfortunately you can't ask for much with Hayward he hasn't had a great season he's had uh his lash line is 208 289 293 in 63 games with the Dodgers he had eight home runs I believe this year he did he is only two weeks removed from hitting a big walkoff home run against um some team called the Mariners so uh he has another left-hand bat so this is something that I know that Joe spada is has been craving so last year he did hit 269 340 473 with 15 home runs he did play 124 games so he is not somebody that's gonna come and all of a sudden be the MVP for the Astros he was DFA for uh after all but this is another op another another Choice another warm body the Astros just don't have what you need at Triple A ready right now so this is a guy that is veteran he can come in he can act as a leader he can come in and maybe take over right field he could become the everyday rightfielder till Kyle Tucker comes back who knows there's nothing wrong with this signing this is probably the best signing the Astros could uh could do at this point gaml that was a crapshoot let me just say it was crap shoot we don't know where we get if we get something great if we don't get something oh well but I think that Hayward has a chance to be something I know the Dodgers they wanted to go a little bit younger but the Astros have a situation where they need more production the offense is not there you can't pin all in hey word to say hey welcome kid well I guess we can't say you're a kid because you're 35 years old but we want you to come in we want you to go ahead and fix the offense we want you to go ahead and make us score 10 runs a game that's not going to happen but what is going to happen and the reason why as soon as he was DFA I said and I told Brett if y'all remember this he said no the Astros have too many outfielders as is they're not GNA sign Jason Hayward and what did they do they went and signed Jason Hayward because he makes so much sense a left-handed bat we don't know how long Kyle Tucker is going to be out so this is perfect you have Chasm cormick you had Mauricio Debon you have Trey cabbage P Pedro Leon has tried to play some Outfield none of these guys has taken off Mauricio duon is more of a utility guy so yes I know David just said we just signed a dinosaur okay yes David but it's a dinosaur with a good pedigree this is not gaml that doesn't really have pedigree this is a guy that is I'm trying to pull it people keep on texting so this is a guy that does have pedigree he could be a veteran option off the bench because how many times in the playoffs have we had a crucial at bat and theyve pinch hit for somebody like David Hensley David Hensley has come up to the plate or somebody with no experience but now even if Kyle Tucker comes back and you don't need him you have somebody like Jason Hayward coming off the bench that's a better option than anybody the Astros have um I did say that about Hayward and I just thought that this was a perfect perfect match for the Astros and him playing uh I remember him hitting a lot of home runs at M Park and I just feel like this is a perfect match actually while I'm talking I'm going to pull this up I'm sorry I didn't have a chance to do this ahead of time this was kind of a a last second Brett's like hey are you going to do a podcast I'm like I haven't even thought about that I'm about to go to school so let me go and pull up his stats against the Houston Astros in his career but I do know that if you're looking at what he's done this year it's not great but if you look at what gaml did before he came it wasn't great if you look what nerys did um it wasn't great so sometimes somebody's trash is somebody else's treasure the Astros may see something that the Dodgers are like oh he's washed up he's done but somebody else turns it into somebody else turns it it not into a star but usable asset so against the Astros in his career he he's actually batting that's maybe not as good as I thought he's batting 250 with um six home runs a 900 Ops and 14 RBI so that's what he's done his career against the Astros and let me see what he's done at menade Park at menade Park he's batting 238 with 813 Ops with three home runs five RBIs granted it's a small sample size only 42 at bats keep in mind he's played most of his career in the National League since he's come in he's mostly been the Astros have moved to Maran league so you've mostly seen them through the in League m uh matchups here so I think this is a win-win experience you got the Astros likely get to go uh and maybe go back to the playoffs and this is somebody who is a stop gap for maybe until Kyle Tucker gets back so overall this is great um I heit he has a hard hit rate and average velocities are higher than last year um his swing and Miss rates have gone up a little bit uh and he's had his ground ball rate has gone up a little bit he has a 224 batting average on balls and play was U the lowest among hitters with at least 150 plate appearances going into Tuesday so this is a guy that has some attributes the Dodgers wanted somebody that could produce now the Astros desperately needed somebody to produce now that's the difference that's why you seej Hayward here because the Astros needed somebody to produce you have gaml here now and in the second we'll go ahead and talk about who likely may be going down who do y' all think it is go and put in the chat who do you think would be going down Triple A um I'm not g to even take have time to take a deep look into the 40-man roster but let's just take a look at who's likely going to be going down uh we'll go and continue this conversation next thank you for listening to lock on as podcast my name is Eric Heisman and Brett chansy he couldn't make this podcast but go and sub uh subscribe to us make us your first listen on Apple odyy Spotify wherever you listen your podcast go and check us out hey guys let's talk about eBay motors have you ever um it's just awesome you Brett just waits till the day of the game he's like oh let me just go to game and he buys the ticket and it's like oh this ticket's only let me buy this ticket for $5 at game time so game time gives you the ticket that you need when you need it and it's um they have all this no no matter if it's baseball Rockets Texans are about to come back so there's just all the different experiences that you can get all in one pricing uh just go ahead and uh get the game time app you can look at seat views you can look at everything so take the guesswork out of buying tickets with Game Time download the game time app create account use the code locked onl for $20 off your first purchase are you excited the Astros have just added another piece yeah I know we wanted them to do this at the trade deadline we wanted them go out and get yandi DS but yandi DS would have cost the Astros there almost their entire farm system they're already got the wor baseball but if you would have gone out and got yandi Diaz you would have had trade a lot more so if you're looking for who the Astros are going to send down I think all signs I hate to say this he's got to be one of my favorite players but he's not producing this year Chaz McCormick is probably gonna be the one that's gonna go down the zenzo he's got to play some first base you've got to have um l profo no not l profo l profo is gone Wham is the guy I was trying to think of uh witam he's got to play some third base in case uh bregman can't play so you're not going to send him down so you gotta keep some of those guys up um You're Gonna Keep um dubon Up You're Gonna Keep some of these other options up so I think it's got to be Chasm cormick if if you're ask me to set my Stone Cold lock of the day it's got to be Chasm cormick I think he needs some time to ReDiscover his swing he doesn't look like the same guy last year and I think just like rapael Montero has rediscovered his pitching why can't Chasm McCormack go down and do the same thing and this gives um Jason Hayward a chance to play with the Houston Astros I wouldn't be surprised if he's I don't know if he'll become the everyday starter I think he'll get a whole bunch of starts and then see what he does but I think um we'll see a lot more what we've been seeing a lot of players rotate and are out so let's see what y'all are saying I see a lot of people saying Chaz Chaz Chaz um so he can't be uh worse than Chaz or McCormick right now so most people are saying it's got to be Chaz McCormick and so I just feel like I mean I haven't seen anything oh yeah this is pretty good Michael says I should just call Joe SP um after I've called him out on air a couple times he's actually not returning my phone calls so that's what happens when call him out on the locked on Astros podcast Joe spot doesn't return your phone calls who would have known so I guess I just blew that source so anyway but I just think that um Jason the Astros wo he's another option he's another warm body he if you look at what his stats are saying this year uh let me look up his main page uh so overall his main page if he has four St bases this year but overall he's doing okay this year for a 35y old veteran I guess he's got a 91 Ops plus his Ops is 682 it's nothing to get excited about guys I'm not gonna lie I'm not gonna say he's the answer to it all he's a solution when you've got none theat is sinking in Outfield he is the patch you're G to put on until Kyle Tucker comes back so he is a good hitter against left-handed pitching he's a left left-handed hitter that can hit left-handed pitching he has some great experience he is a career you would think that he has a better career batting average but he's got a career 257 batting average 750 748 Ops so I guess we think of Jason Hayward he's a great defender let's not take that away from him he's also a great defender so you think of him as this great player his uh career high home run was back in 20 2012 he had 27 home runs he had 2019 uh he had 20 in 2019 he had 21 home runs and last year he had 15 home runs uh he had 18 in his rookie year so he has never been a big home run hitter but he is a guy that makes contact he does strike out a little bit but he his Ops has always been there he's been a big Ops plus guy so he is a above average player normally normally ain't this year last year he had a 118 Ops plus he's regressed a little bit this year that's okay let's see what the Astros can do with him who is thought gaml with just playing more would have been contributing like he's doing he is not the overall answer he's not going all a sudden become the same guy that he was in 2010 when he was an Allstar is that really the only time he was an All-Star seriously I thought he was why am I thinking of Jason Hayward yes he was only All-Star once why am I think of Jason Hayward as this alltime great player I guess when he came up he was just like this great player he had this instant impact and everybody was like oh this guy's going to be a star but it just never materialized I guess right so unfortunately his career didn't materialize but now that's an advantage to the Houston Astros because you got another option he could be a veteran presence Off the Bench should the Astros make the playoffs but they got to win like somebody mentioned in the comments after the podcast yesterday the Mariners won they're now three and half games behind Astros you don't have the luxury of oh well the Mariners are losing yes they have been losing but you got to go out there and do something and that's what the Astros did they went out and did something will it work who knows all they can do is try and if it's just like Barb Simpson with a cake that says at least you tried and throws the cake away that's fine at least the Astros tried to do something it what harm does it do if it doesn't work they can go and just throw the cake away release him and I do believe that since uh he was added to the roster before September 1st he can be on the playoff roster so this is an option so I think that the Astros have made the right move is it the answer to everything no they got to hit better they've got to be more consistent with runners in scoring position they're pitching great the bullpen it's been doing okay it's for the most part it's been doing its job Hector n has been a shot in arm but overall it's the offense this offense isn't going to do much even if they make the playoffs so they got to figure something out Joe spada has a month and what three days to figure it out he's got to do something Kyle Tucker you got to come back you got to do something but this is not the answer but it's a solution so we'll see so how much will he cost I believe league minimum is I don't I want to say it's $565,000 so it would be probably pro-rated version of that for the rest of the season don't quote me on that but I think that's the league minimum is 565,000 so he'll get a pro-rated rate of that so it's not bad for a veteran the Dodgers are paying the big chunk of the salary right $9 million maybe maybe this is another don't I don't want to say it's another yordan Alvarez don't get me wrong but maybe this is another gift by the Dodgers to the Houston Astros and it comes back to bite them in a butt so we'll see guys that's all we got for this locked on Astros podcast I got to hurry up and get to school brenon and I will be back and uh we'll go ahead and talk about tonight's game versus Phillies hopefully outcome's a little bit better than it was last night because that was a sucky ending my name is Eric Heisman he is Brett chansy and we are the locked on Astros podcast thank you for making us your first listen every day and Jason hey word welcome to htown and we will see you later in ghost Ros [Music]
