just about set to go and getting to start Zack effin at singy we were talking earlier about how he's doing a great job navigating through tough spots I've just been so impressed with when it seems like there's more pressure he's more calm and settles in he's done an incredible job with runners in scoring position most guys they get a little tight they start to aim the baseball but for some reason he gets looser the ball comes out of his hand with more life and he's able to wiggle off the hook of you know tough situations and get his team back in the Dugout two1 now swings through that got him swinging and that's strikeout number 100 on the year well that event seem to be over as soon as it started three- pitch strike out you've got to be better at the plate right there at least to foul something off extend that at [Applause] bat and now it's Luis Garcia one down base is empty and it's even up stra [Applause] fouls that off to the left and will do it again the wine of the pitch and there's a ball one out base is empty [Applause] got him swinging well there appears to be no problem settling in on the mound out there today it looks pretty tough to start this one punching out the first two hitters of this ball game and somebody's going to have to put the bat on the ball put it in play and get something going two out space is empty here's Juan YZ the one to one and a foul ball so top of the first and he's got a chance to strike out the side he's looked razor sharp misses inside and that's ball two well he's been able to do it without using too many pitches and that's going to be the key they need him to pitch deep into this ball game so it's not always the best thing to rack up a lot of strikeouts kicks andand deals good job to fight that one off the wi of the stands out to me for this guy is that he comes in with a 3 to1 strike out to walk ratio on the season so when you consider consistency the ability to get swings and misses and to limit base runners that's critical in winning games today especially when teams are depending on the big swing the home run to win ball games now it's the rookie DH Colton cower and now the Lefty swinging a miss and the count is even two and [Applause] two HS and misses it's a strike out he had him out in front which isn't easy to do against a hitter like this known for using the entire field just couldn't sit back long enough on that one Anthony santand there at the plate the wine in the pitch and now one and two one and two here comes a pitch on its way to the corner nobody can get there and it's a foul [Music] ball the Lefty fires pitches in the dirt and that's ball two GPS one to right that's a fair ball and it's getting into the corner now he'll turn for second and he'll pull in there with a standup double well that was one of those high percentage Advantage counts where batting averages are just so much higher kind of a risky pitch coming inside with the breaking ball like that you have to bury it otherwise it's not too difficult to get the bat to it like he did that time maned second with one away and into the box for Baltimore gunar Henderson the pitch and that one [Applause] right there he got a pitch that he knew he could handle allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws one out runner at second Ryan o'n comes up to hit left hand batter weights this to third it's through for a hit into third now so Runners at the corners and one out stringing them together that's three hits in a row I don't know how he's able to shoot that pitch the other way and still put something on it that pitch was inside and he let it get really deep so pretty incredible hands to fight it off and still get good wood on it here's aloy Jimenez Lefty out of the stretch Runners at first and third and another ball it's great to get on the board in the first frame in the ball game but here's an opportunity for them to really open things up with a couple of Runners on let's see if they can cash in two and one now well in this situation with a runner on first less than two outs some say hey get the ground ball double play with two strikes some people say get the strike out I think you just execute your pitch the best pitch you possibly can and let the result be whatever it's going to be two on one out swings and misses struck him out oh nothing too fancy on the strikeout pitch right there just a low 90s fast ball and I'm not sure he was trying to challenge him but that's pretty much what happened very hitable location but he found a way to just get it by him next to hit Jackson holiday next offering his foul back laboring here about to throw his 30th pitch of the [Applause] inning and a swing and a miss they limit the damage here holiday to First and quickly one away in the second that's what a good Sinker is designed to do get a guy to roll over a little bit hit the ball on the ground kill some worms while you're at it James Wood will hit next one down Bas is empty [Applause] no and another ball Clyde Washington doing the umpiring behind the dish in this one sometimes considered a bit of a pitcher umpire singing he likes the low ball which traditionally favors pitching but you know hitters today are pretty good at dropping their barrel down so we'll see how it goes in this one singy what kind of strike zone is most frustrating for hitters I'd say off the plate away and down and why those are the toughest locations to hit the baseball swing and a miss him out two down off to a strong start singy as he's punched out three of the first five he's faced well he's definitely minimizing contact he can get the swing and miss when he needs it but he'll also keep the defense fresh behind him allowing some balls in play as well misses off the plate and a full countdown [Applause] the right-hander gives up the two out walk one of the things about that two out walk the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead so a ball down the line or into the Gap will produce a two out RBI and those are the best that is if you are the offensive side of it and that one finds its way through throw stops the lead runner at second two on and two out just a simple ground ball the other way they had eyes on it man sometimes that's all you need to do just let the ball travel put the ball in play and just hope it finds a hole first and second two down and here's the rookie center fielder two on two outs and that's off the Inside Edge now two balls in a strike swing and this one's bounced to the ground McAn to First that ends the frame so the Nets leave a pair they're down one [Applause] nothing we head to the bottom of the second and here is Cedric mull you know this is kind of a tough matchup as a left-handed hitter facing a left-handed pitcher what you tell yourself is I want to stay square of the plate try to hit the ball over the short Stop's head one ball two straight the pitch chopped left side and they get Mullin for the out the third baseman Ron Ramon Ras the next to hit for the Orioles and a pitch oh that hit him fires to first on the Run already two out here in the home half of inning number two definitely some concern here that ball came back and got right on the pitching arm as you can see him trying to shake it off and if nothing else you worry about him getting some dead arm and losing some feeling but from what I can tell I think they're going to let him continue and that's a really good sign two out space is empty James McAn in now two down DOL on ripped to Third on to First and the Orioles set down in order nothing doing this time around for the O's but they're on top one nothing top half of the third inning and now up for Washington Nim Nunes nun and he deal that one fouled [Applause] off the one two missed inside with the [Applause] Curve I Chopper to third oras Zips it across and one away in the top of the [Music] [Applause] third so the N lineup turns over Alex call the next to hit the Orioles up by a run we're here in the top half of inning number three and he lays down a bun and it goes just fouled the Chris through the early stages he hasn't been very efficient in terms of the pitch count he's going to need to get some quick outs if he's going to get deeper into this game Henderson over to First in time first two batters retired here in the top of the Third Lu Garcia Luis Garcia digging in for the Nationals two out Bas is empty it is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now doesn't even matter that much if your starter doesn't go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their Bullpen on the ground right side o' takes it himself Nets go down 1 two three nothing do it for Washington and it remains one nothing and we're back ready to go for the last half of the inning here's the designated hitter for the Orioles Colton cower the pitch and that misses just feel bad for him on top of that he was already in scoring position so you think about how it kind of hurts the team as well swing in a miss one ball two straight [Applause] the short stop takes a [Applause] ball swing and a miss struck him out and good work there as he gets a one two three Orioles held in check there they lead it one- nothing [Music] the battle of the Beltway rolls on out of the fourth and now it's Juan [Music] YZ and now a Full Count he's been pitching well but we'll see what kind of adjustment the hitters make this second time through the order we'll know if he's got really good stuff in this one or not cuts and misses it's a strike out that cutter right there had just enough movement on it to get the swing and Miss wasn't a great location by any means that's typically a spot that hitters can handle so I'd say fooled him with just enough of that late [Applause] action a little out front there as he swings through this guy's got such a good Sinker as a hitter you've got to look up in the zone if you look down you're going to be chasing stuff in the dirt and that's outside two and two the Nationals trailing by a run top half of inning number four that one the other way nice grab that screwing right there tells me he's seeing the ball pretty well I know it didn't produce a hit but he made Solid contact and that's all you're looking to do anytime you're at the plate here's the left fielder James Wood sharp grounder that's through for a base hit so a two out Knock keeps the inning alive the Harold Ramirez at the dish Ramirez the Pitch hit hard base hit throw in holds the lead runner at second two on now with two away backto back singles pitch was away and he did exactly what you're supposed to do with it drive it the other way just go with the pitch so two on with two away and now ilaro Vargas the pitch ground ball left side they get the force that's the third out so the Nets leave a pair they Trail here one- nothing bottom of the fourth so now the Orioles cleanup hitter Ryan [Applause] o' and the pitch flips the corner it's two and two swings and misses it's a strike out couldn't catch up to the heater came inside with that two- strike fast ball nicely and just bunched him up on on the inside part of the plate couldn't get around on it and catch it out front many times if you do it's a foul ball and you know a lot of pitchers they really don't like working inside with two strikes because they do not want to hit that batter and when they've got him up against the ropes got to figure out a way to put him away did a nice job right there theoy Jimenez now that one lifted to left wood makes the grab on the Run just pulled off of it a little bit right there that front shoulder coming open and of staying closed if he does that he's going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some Authority instead of a fly out to [Applause] left on the ground to Third and it's through for a hit Joey gets on base and keeps it going just found a way to slap that ball down the third Baseline that's really excellent back control and it kind of goes back to all those drills you see hitters do off the te where it's placed in different spots that was just nice step off throw to first back in their standing next to hit Cedric Mullins right through there for a strike holiday off of first with two [Applause] away and a pitch very high with that one the count now two and [Applause] two and that just misses great RBI spot here just got to stay focused on the pitch the runner will be in motion so something in the Gap should definitely score so now two on and two outs now a great back and forth and that it bad he had to play off some really close pitches and somehow Boogie found a way to keep the bat on his shoulder right there I'll tell you right now I couldn't have done it two outs couple of base runners at first and second [Applause] at the belt and fires battling here as he fouls it [Music] [Applause] away that one just misses and it's two and two just missing off the plate there according to the Umpire and out there on the mound maybe trying to get an explanation can't say he's convinced but it looks like he's accepted it foul ball another two two upcoming and a foul ball he stays [Music] alive cut on and miss stram out picks up strikeout number seven so they strand a pair we're headed to the fifth it's the Orioles one and the Nationals [Applause] nothing we go to the top of the fifth and stepping in is the Speedy number 30 singy you got to appreciate a guy who's this good defensively I mean watching him track balls in the Outfield it is beautiful righty delivers and a swing and a line drive at a right field pulls up and that's in there for a [Applause] knock showed some really nice patience in that it bad worked himself into a good count that pretty much split the Zone down the middle and those are the ones where you got to make them pay Nim Nunes digging in for the Nationals here's a one-1 and that's in the dirt kicks and fires and that gets the top of the zone for a strike this is one of those situations the infielders have to pre-plan and understand that the ball's going to be hit extremely hard right at them if they're going to have a chance to go for a double play tying run is at first and we're at the top of the fifth maybe a two ball five four three and they turn the double play as a former player watching 543 double plays brings back some adrenaline it's such an exciting play and it's always a great reminder of baseball being such a team sport next for the Nationals is the DH Alex call there's a [Applause] [Applause] strike out to short Henderson and that is [Applause] that back now at Oral Park and the batter now James [Applause] mccan SW hanging a ground ball out to short whips it to First and the lead off hitter retired in the F well he's doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball good execution back to the top of the lineup and now it's going to be Colton cower one down base is empty swinging a foul over the screen and back out of play [Applause] fights it off you'll see another B is empty one away last half of inning number five he goes down looking now tough night at the dish punching out for the third time right there he just hasn't looked very comfortable with the plate a little unsure of his timing right now not picking up the spin and location of these pitches we'll have some adjustments to make and another ball he really committed to that fast ball up at the top of the Zone he knows that if he makes a mistake in the zone and gets hit hard by a power guy like this that's a nice Miss right there kick sandio swung on Bon that one's back there back gone that'll fire up the dugout his 34th of the season and they tack on to their lead it's two nothing singy the ball is jumping off his back yes it is tons of loud contact man it's been impressive knew what pitch he wanted to hit spent on some other pitches in this hit bat was very patient and it paid off two outs nobody on now at the plate gunar Henderson late difficult to put that ball in the air or get through it just poures in on the hands and now it's kebert [Applause] Ruiz the one-1 just missed definitely a frustrating day for the offense but when they look at it this guy's had his best stuff been pain in the corners working on the edges and changing speeds just a difficult one you tip your cap swing and a miss two and two two ball St that one gets down for a hit and that keeps the inning going now the left fielder James Wood [Applause] foul ball there right-hander kick steals struck him out looking so another good inning for him on the mound six shutout Innings now it's the Orioles two and the Nationals nothing back now for the bottom of the six and there's a new pitcher on the mount DJ hers well he's a big time strikeout guy out there this season averaging more than one per inning and now the first baseman Ryan o' the first B Chris you play here in 2002 what are the memories that stand out as to being a member of the Baltimore orol for me it was just pulling into the parking lot and having those that were there with a an encouraging smile or a pat on the back regardless of how things were going it made it a lot easier to come to the ballpark whether you were doing well or you were struggling and then the way that they treated your family I mean this is a great place to play and I'd say it's got to be one of the top places in all of baseball and and the pitch that's foul off to the right side keeps the ab going and you had a cameo in the movie Moneyball as an Orioles player in a highlight clip here's a two- two in the air out towards Right Center Ramirez moves towards it squeezes it one down out batt Le field here's the left fielder aloy Jimenez and that one is lifted in the air makes the grab on the run and there's out to short oh can't pick it up cleanly and he's going to make it to First and we'll see how they score well with two outs I'm thinking he had his mind on getting in The Dugout so they could get to hit and all it takes is just a little laps in concentration so now let's see if his pitcher will pick him up man it first and now the center fielder Cedric Mullins there's a swing and a drive and no one can get there around third he'll score easily and they lead by three puts a run on the board and picks up an RBI just a solid swing right there caught it out front and ripped it into the outfield for the base hit those always feel great and in scoring position with two away ramono Ras the next to hit for the Orioles man it's second Fly ball to right Ramirez racing over to make the catch but a run will score in the Inning on this RBI double it's now 3 nothing it's major league baseball and it's on the show welcome back we're in the seventh we have a new pitcher on the M Brian Baker and compared to a lot of other relievers strikeouts have not been a big weapon for him this year so the defense should be active now it's the right fielder Harold Ramirez and here it comes just off the outside edge you know these Nationals just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game chasing pitches has been a big part of the story story we've seen it quite a bit today it's been tough for him to make contact at times and it just doesn't look like they're seeing it very well as a [Applause] group the pitch outside and on the mound you know confidence has to be pretty high with all of the swings and misses he's had them eaten out of the palm of his hand pretty much all game righty to the plate bouns it back with two strikes and a payoff pitch stays alive swing and a base hit and after grinding through that at bat he gets the best of it well he really had to battle for that one man that was so fun to watch everything was on time and fluid in that swing got a pitch he could get the barrel on and lined it into center for the knock those always feel good IL demaro Vargas now at the [Applause] plate and a foul ball if you're going to get something going this is the time to do it you get the lead off man on everybody's got to look over the shoulder and say I'm just going to keep the line moving don't try to do too much swings through it for the K some high cheese for strike three for gets talked about a lot but a good high fast ball in a two strike situation it's just become such a problem for hitters in more recent years but with all of the emphasis by pitchers on developing that spin rate having a good grip on the baseball those High fast balls they kind of look like to The Hitter that they're Rising even though they're not but they're not decreasing in velocity and spin rate so very difficult to get the barrel on it the Orioles leading by three here in the top half of inning number seven next pitch is [Applause] outside on the ground left side six four three but he beats it good hustle and the inning continues Yen Canó comes on now he's been so good against [Applause] lefties and now here is is Nasim Nunes throw to first and he's back in safely two outs a short stop takes a ball meanwhile activity in the bullpen Craig Kimbrell is up and throwing for Brandon High Smith getting loose as well and the righty deals wouldn't chase that time Chris with that distraction and the Speedy guy at first he's in a favorable hitter count well if nothing else I mean this is a great spot for a hitter to be in [Music] payoff pitch highfly ball down the left field line and he can't quite get there it's a foul ball and a pitch puts it in the air out towards left Center and that one pulled down by him and so one left for Washington they Trail in this one three nothing we're back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seven Jacob Barnes just trying to keep this one close here and this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game here is James M for the Orioles the catcher James [Applause] M and he deals swings through that one it's a strikeout well that slider was way out of the zone and for me it just comes down to not seeing the pitch out of the hand not tracking it into the zone and then also being a little bit anxious not confident in your two strike approach and so when a guy's in that position you get him to commit early and a lot of times you get the swing and Miss as you did right there this one popped up wood on the run towards the line makes a nice running catch and there's two down now batt the right field and Anthony santand the next to hit for the Orioles with this kind of lead he can swing freely try to hit the ball out of the par do what he loves to do swing and a highfly ball down the right field line Ramirez has it sized up and that will end the inning and we're back ready to begin the eighth now it's the DH Alex call the Nets in Striking Distance but have some work to do boo it starts with the leadoff man need a good and bad out of him right here next offering is down low well it's critical right here that they bear down and turn in some quality of bats try to chip away at that lead because if it gets to the ninth that closer is coming in and a strike not even close there Full Count now bounce to the left side base hit around first digging for two throws to Second and he'll get there with a double to lead off the eighth turned on it nicely definitely a little out in front of the pitch but he didn't hook around it too much and was able to keep it fair down the line now it's going to be Luis Garcia ball to strike swing and a miss nice change up [Applause] the one two towards first and he handles it himself for the out good Sinker low in the zone right there and produced exactly what he was looking for ball on the ground nice ground out Juan YZ Juan YZ digging in for the Nationals I wouldn't expect many pitches up in the zone here pitchers looking for a strike out or a ground ball hoping to keep that runner at third in the air right field that one gets down for a hit the throw in he's in safely at second a run scores it's a two-run [Applause] [Applause] game so a new arm out of the bullpen for the Orioles bur Smith and as relievers go he's not a big strikeout guy tries to force weak contact so command and execution are huge for him so next will be the Four Hole hitter for the Nationals Hebert Ruiz the tying run at the plate fought off foul [Applause] [Music] swing and a ball hit out towards left center field Mullins tracks it down for the [Applause] out now a chance for James Wood this is what stat nerds like myself might call a high leverage situation yeah boo not sure what the numbers say but clearly in ADV bath that could change the course of this game dramatically swing in a Miss as he was late that time looking very settled on the mount here in the eighth one more out they'll probably hand it off to their closer for the ninth with at least a two-run lead and another ball [Applause] up the middle and he knocks it down and they get the out after the Roche that ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand one for the Nationals on this RBI double and this is now a three one ball game Major League Baseball is on the show back now new pitcher on the mount as we roll into the bottom of the eighth Robert Garcia bringing in the Lefty with the left-handed hitter coming up to hit classic Bullpen move right here so we'll see how it works out 34 five do up for the home team digging in gunar Henderson the pitch center field under it and there's one down now batting first B Ryan o' the next to hit for the Orioles one down base is empty swings and misses and it's one and two right side Ramirez makes the catch and there's two down now bat left field aloy now the left fielder aloy Jimenez two down nobody on here the bottom half of the eighth [Applause] inning that misses the Zone it's two and two definitely a swing and Miss slider down and in he finished that really well just couldn't get him to offer at it two two now in the air left field wood under this one one and that'll do it we're back it's the top of the n and there's a new pitcher on the M Craig Kimber I think closure has to be one of the toughest jobs in baseball and you see a pretty high turnover rate because of it every outing seems to be high pressure this one included we'll see if he can wrap up the win and get himself a save a little roller up along first oh steps on the bag now one gone in the ninth good armide run and sink on that pitch right there got inside on him and got him to bounce into that out he's two outs away and now it's switch hitting third baseman ilaro [Applause] Vargas swing and a ball popped up holiday as this one sized up makes the catch for the out and there are two outs last chance for the Nets in this one next to hit for the Nets number 30 two down nobody on that one fouled off two and [Applause] two the Nationals down to their final strike on the ground and this should do it steps on the bag himself ball game 3-1 ball game quick game we were looking for a little bit more it seemed it points the offenses were going to break out but a total of four runs combined really good pitching and defense on both sides just a couple of key swings making all the difference
