Teams Likely To Nab A Playoff Bid [Music] who will make the inaugural 12 team college football playoff this is the college game day podcast for Wednesday August 14th ree Davis and Pete th with you Wednesday August 14th also known as game day producer Jim guero's birthday to all who celebrate Jim does so does his family no one else does but at least he got mentioned here Pete uh 12 team playoff we've gone through some season and previews in terms of groups of 12 we had lightning strike teams teams that would maybe make the playoff if everything in the world went right caught lightning in the bottle then we had the contenders that maybe just needed a thing or two to go in their Direction and now the time that all the fans care about actual predictions things that are guaranteed to go wrong and to live in our mentions from now until eternity so are you you ready for this type of pressure I'm ready for it and our friend Jimmy guo got his got his birthday present already when the Celtics won the championship in the spring so he gets no presents from either of us still still waiting for long his present is getting to listen to this podcast he is he is a loyal List's a faithful listener he's a faithful listener we do appreciate that so here's how we're going to do it we're going to let you know our conference Championship picks along with a group of five pick and then from there we'll open the debate for the at large spots which have expanded to 12 this year we've explained it many times on this this podcast before we'll continue to do it on college game day the seating is going to be different from the rankings probably the seating will go this way the four highest ranked Conference champions will be seated one through four seated one through four regardless of where they are ranked by the committee the next highest ranked conference Champion almost certainly the highest ranked champion from the group of five will get the fifth buy where they are or pardon me we'll get the fifth guaranteed spot and then we'll be in the playoff and most likely we'll be seated 12 possibly 11 would be an upset if they're much higher than that so that's where we are so let's start at the top and just Dive Right In who's your number one seed the champion of which Georgia and Texas conference who is it and why I have the University of Texas the SEC Champions as the number one seed and why my number one seed SEC champion univers of Georgia fine Choice Georgia has a much much more chalky but a fine Choice well it'll change soon um a much more difficult schedule than Texas correct they have to go to Texas to play I feeling we'll be there but I think so will the F1 race that week I think with the with with Carson Beck coming back with sort of the institutional success that Georgia has had as a football program knowing how to win probably a bit of frustration from last year because Michigan proved to be the best team because Georgia wasn't in the field uh for most of the season if not all of it you could easily make the argument Georgia was the best team they do have some holes to fill that they haven't in the past the defensive line isn't full of Sure Fire first rounders as it has been in the past but then again neither is the defensive line from Texas they weren't first rounders last year both of them weren't yeah but they have some they have some holes to fill there so why both first round talents maybe why did you why did you go Texas Over Georgia or even over Ohio State as as a number one seed well first of all we tend to think alike and I just didn't want our podcast to be like us synchronization so you're not the same not sold I am I'm sold on Texas I think Texas is a playoff team and I think Texas can win the SEC Championship and I think the case starts with Quinn yers as their returning quarterback for as much nois as there's been about Arch Manning in that program he hasn't taken one relevant snap Quin is one of the five best quarterbacks in college football probably one of the five best players in college football and uh I really think that he made a significant leap from year one to year two and I expect another one this year he's playing behind and you know how much we love offensive lines here Reese he's playing behind an offensive line that returns four starters has arguably the best or second best left tackle in the country in kelvin Banks and then uh I'm really bullish on uh cam Williams the right tackle who they're going to slide in he started some games at guard he looks like one of those old Sabin Alabama o linemen I mean he's he's a merer 6566 340 um he has a first round archetype he doesn't have the body of work yet and then in the interior they return a ton of Veteran guys so feel like there is just as much talent at tailback even though they had the top tailback in the in the country drafted last year uh I'm sorry the top draft pick in the country last year um and I just feel like there's a preponderance of Talent on offense a favorable enough schedule I think they catch Michigan at a good time to really take off on that and then that isn't obviously going to help them win the SEC Championship but I feel like that is going to give them confidence and and really help them launch a season the same way going to Tuscaloosa in week two last year really helped Texas so I'm going to go a little a little off slightly off the board you know most people have what Texas five or six and I'm going to say Texas goes through in their first season because they're prepared enough on the lines and wins the SEC they're they are the schedule pick yes now they would have to win the SEC Championship game that would be a huge challenge beating Georgia anywhere is a huge challenge it's in Austin but they don't play Old Miss they don't play LSU they don't play Alabama they don't play Missouri you know all of those things are in their favor they've got Georgia in Austin and they have Texas A&M um at home as well and you mentioned catching Michigan early Georgia is the anti schedule pick this is the belief that if you are good enough you'll win the games anyway if you are powerful enough that you will win the games anyway um both of these teams are relying on some skill position transfers I mean Texas I think doesn't have a single returning receiver that caught more than like eight passes for Texas you know they have some transfers who who've been productive Georgia's turning to Trevor etn transfer from Florida to bolster their running back court Kobe young wide receiver from Miami is coming in but Georgia has to go to Alabama to Texas two old misss and they've got Tennessee home and yet I still think I think I'm defaulting to who do I think the best team is yeah and so I think the best team is Georgia and so that's who that's who I'll say number one though I do think Texas is a playoff team as well I think that's very fair one little piece of Intel I picked up on the trail this summer is that people at Texas feel like Trey Moore The Edge rusher from UTSA becomes their best defensive player right out the bat so while they were really St on the interior last year and maybe a little lighter on the edge they were good but not great I feel like Moore will give them a top 50 type player in the country to come in and really be disruptive where maybe their their disruption really came from Byron Murphy going up the middle last year um yeah for so if you want to more was like third in the country had 13 sacks last year for people who aren't familiar with him I think he'll be wearing number 31 so you probably ought to get to ought to get to know him pretty quickly so I feel like it's an interesting Georgia roster right because they perhaps even without ra Thomas who was obviously uh dismissed from the team recently was he dismissed from the team or just not playing this season Kirby said in euphemistic fashion and ra Thomas ran into some domestic issues some of which rose to the level according to the reports of felony that um when Kirby addressed it the he euphemistically said I met face to face it was a good talk and Roba understands that he can no longer be a part of this football team okay so he's not on the team no that's fair I just wasn't sure if it was like a year I was pretty sure they threw him on the ra one ofing grorgia in in the last couple years and and I really feel like we're going to see this offense continue to kind of evolve and and open up this year uh Carson Beck um is the best Prospect they've had at Georgia since Matthew staford um that doesn't mean he's going to be the best player cuz that said some bet kid won some football games and was and was and was pretty good but um the case for who obviously have in the playoff it's not like I think Georgia is going to fall off the cliff is I think this is the best offensive line they've had there in the 20 years I've done this I really feel like this is a this is a stout group Reese when you when when you really dial in you're going to you're going to see a handful of guys drafted off this line and uh I feel like they can be Smashmouth ATN reemerges as one of the best backs in the SEC just wearing some different colors at the cocktail party and they're going to have a lot of time to throw the ball downfield be it to Dominic love who I've heard has had a great off seon there uh we saw how Dynamic Dylan Bell could be last year right in the different ways and the creative ways they've used him so um there's been times during the Kirby era where it has felt a little bit like he tried to create the early part of the Nick Saven ER and I feel like those times are over I feel like this is going to be a more wide open offense I think it's going to be exciting Georgia season I just feel like there's more rakes to step on for the Bulldogs maybe than anybody else in the SEC yeah and and they can their schedule is difficult enough especially the road SCH that they can play well and lose yes you know they don't have to show up flat necessarily because they have some challenges but I a lot of confidence in this team the receivers you mentioned they Ed Brock balers beautifully at tight end now they Oscar Delp they've got lost and lucky they've got Benjamin urek who transferred from Stanford and a guy that you and I have followed a little bit you say okay who's going to be that Georgia defensive lineman who's going to wreak havoc in the interior I mean you know about Mel Williams and other guys that they're going to have in terms of rushers I'm a believer in the zir stack house maybe it's maybe it's because you get things emblazoned in your brain and that day against that redh hot Tennessee team with all those NFL picks around him 78 78 stack house was the one that was dismantling the the middle of of the Tennessee offensive line yes um I don't think this is the best defensive line we've seen in Georgia when you when you look at past you know and again you're talking zits on the mo L considering some of the you know just dossier of talent that have that have that have come in and out of there in recent years but I don't feel like it's going to be the same type of marauding group I feel like Mikel Williams um there's a little bit I want to see it you know it's a little bit like JT tuo I I need I'm not in mid-season form on that tuo Tu moo Tumi mooa thank you uh jtt the star Edge at Ohio State who has all the intangibles and all the draft projections and none of the production I feel like that's kind of what I want to see from Williams a little bit this year too is let's have the production match the reputation they're both fine players who've been good players but they're not like standing on the table let's get excited about them top 10 pick type guys until they have a wire-to-wire season of dominance um there I do think a guy the NFL really likes is Malachi Stars safeties don't get NFL Executives that excited it's not a value position but boy he he could be like a once a decade safety like he's really special about to wrap Georgia by saying just so our Bulldog Faith won't get upset I'm going to say the name Malachi Starks uh to put a to put a bow on it so you think Texas number one overall SEC Champion I think Georgia number one overall SEC champion and both of us have each of those two teams in the playoff someplace my second overall seed Big 10 Champion here's where chalky MC cherson stays here I'm going Ohio Ohio State and Oregon State because I think they have the best rock both sides top to bottom maybe even better than Georgia at least more proven than Georgia and more depth they spent a lot of money in the transfer portal they've got two great running backs my question about Ohio State's quarterback and will Howard was a sensational player at Kansas State and around him they've got a lot of young talent that hasn't played a lot I need to see a little bit now I think I'm going to see enough and I think that their roster talented enough that they're going to they're going to win the Big 10 even having even having to deal with an Oregon team who I am just as high on or maybe since I'm not picking them to win the Big 10 not big 10 just as high as everybody but really high on them but you know Ohio state has a very favorable easy non-conference schedule they do have to go to Oregon they have to go to Penn State but you know you've got you mentioned tuy M they've got Jack sawer they had Caleb DS transfer in from Alabama you know his safety who is right there with Malachi Starks in terms of being a dynamic safety they're going nuts about this freshman wide receiver Jeremiah Smith and that's not even to consider AA abuka and all of the other guys that they've got who are proven Commodities trayon Henderson quench on Judkins coming from Old Miss they're loaded everywhere and whether they win the national championship or not or whether they reach their potential depends to me on how well the quarterback plays and if it is in fact will Howard or you know is it Devin Brown does the young guy Julian saian get in it you know who is their quarterback yeah so I picked Oregon to uh to win the Big 10 and that is rooted in part now did I do it with like full throated conviction no but I feel like Oregon's going to be very good you have Oregon in the playoff I have orgon in the playoff I feel like where they are strongest is where I have questions about Ohio State so I certainly agree with you I think Ohio state will have the most players invited to the this year I feel like it's going to be a Michigan is amount like 18 last year um again six or seven guys on their roster at this time last year we just assumed we going pro so it's a very rare Confluence of talent you throw Caleb DS in there um who could just be one of the 10 best football players in the country right now regardless of position um I don't think we've talked about Ty Williams he may be the best NFL prospect and the highest drafted player on Ohio State this year he's obviously an interior defensive lineman so um that said the ducks have a quarterback who is proven proven and proven and they have a better offensive line I have some slight reservations about Ohio State's offensive line just because of the way they've played they haven't been poor but they have not been dominant they changed position coaches Justin fry came in they've gotten better um but they are they are right now a work in progress with some questions and in that League week to week I I feel like I need to see that now they do have the the Michigan preseason schedule from the last couple years where they have three tuneups to figure things out they have Chip Kelly calling plays he and Justin fry uh orchestrated a run of elite Run games while they were there and they had very good backs I think they had three or four straight years where they had tailbacks drafted um credit to DeShaun Foster credit to chip credit to the Run game um so I feel like the in with Will Howard the difference between will Howard and Kyle McCord is that will Howard can run that zone read yes we know how chip and I feel like that is such a critical part of that offense that was taken away last year cuz kic cour brilliant quarterback good numbers went 11- one he was he was a statue he's just he's a pure dropback so well they didn't have CJ Str running running a whole out of his own read no remember people begged for him to run more that became like the fan cry and he did run if you remember in that Georgia game finally scrambled though mostly and out of necessity and well placed but will Howard is more of a guy as we saw at Kansas State who you can build some quarterback run game around correct they'll run five you know QB run type plays a game for him every year which opens so much different thing so many different things up so I think Ohio State's going to be very good I think they're a playoff team I think they'll beat Michigan I don't know with any certainty they're going to go to Eugene and win early early in the season and so um and then if it comes down to Ohio State and Oregon and Indianapolis who knows I they're very close and I think that's probably what it will be yeah um and I violated one rule of preseason prediction because when I had to turn in my vote for preseason All-American team my preseason first team All-America quarterback's Dylan Gabriel Dylan Gabriel with a good season and a good season of health is going to leave Eugene as college football's all-time leading passer and leader in touchdown passes maybe touchdowns responsible for and you know Case Case Keenum holds most of those records right now Dylan Gabriel in his career is thrown for just under 15,000 yards and 125 touchdown I would say he's proven yeah and so usually if I think it's close I go who has the better quarterback I don't mean to disrespect will Howard I think he's a really he's a very good player um but I think Dylan Gabriel is the stronger quarterback I'm giving Ohio State the slightest of edges because I think their roster is more complete their roster might be more complete and more proven than georg's deeper in some in some respects too so so we have we have four of the same playoff teams but so far we have not agreed on a champion yeah who's your third seed in next conference Champion it is the Utah Utes the Big 12 Champion wow yeah I I feel like I feel like disagreement is healthy for our relationship and probably better for our listeners we're not going to embrace debate on this podcast in in in a sort of conventional yelling and screaming way but I do think having some having some some just different perspectives is uh is is really healthy um and healthy is what I'm banking on for the uh for the Utah Utes to uh to win the Big 12 Cameron ryzen needs to stay healthy if he does not stay healthy they will not win the league I just I I think it's it's that simple I think this is a quintessential Utah defense they have bangers up front Lander Barton is one of the best linebackers in the country they have a really high-end backend um zamaya vaugh is the the the star corner there who you know could could end up as an all ameran type guy and a high draft pick uh they have uh yeah Junior tofun has played a lot of games there and been really good uh up up at up front in the defensive tackle and I think if there's one thing that we've learned to count on with Kyle Whittingham and Morgan scall is they're going to have a defensive based identity and now we have presumably a healthy quarterback although behind him a little bit scary not a lot of production it is actually Sam Huard from the uh Huard West Coast quarterback husky yes and I believe he went through UC Davis is that the road um again good player but you know they they need cam rising to stay healthy you like the addition of Dorian singer uh Damen Alfred was Syracuse's leading receiver last year he's he's a good player they they have really honed in on their weaknesses and they should become more strengths Michael pitman's obviously a guy who's been really productive money Parks is a fun name and he's a pretty good player too so I I and I feel like there aren't a lot of questions about about their o line so I feel really good I think Utah is the safest pick to win a league I have the most conviction about Utah winning the Big 12 over any other pick to win a league I have no conviction not to that kind of depth about anyone winning the Big 12 there are too many caveats or too many potential rakes to step on I'll stay in the Big 12 they're not going to get the three seed according to me they will be the fourth seed okay but I think the Big 12 champion will be the Kansas j-hawks I mean you think about what this would mean historically I mean this is their last conference title was 1968 in the big eight they were co-champions and this could be the wrongest prediction that ever wrongest wronged if Jaylen Daniels does not stay healthy and that has been a a massive issue for the last couple of years now I think you said on our podcast last week of the next group of contenders that Jaylen was practicing yoga and was in was pigeon pigeon POS half pigeon you know half pigeon is re it I think you take your foot and put it up under your leg usually do it at the end so you're really stretched out you you jam like your right foot under your uh left thigh Lean Forward don't listen to me if you really want to do it use YouTube and and a a better looking more Nimble instructor and all that call hip stretch but it kind of touches all those things so he he has found some Zen in half pigeon and we hope he has found some health the Zen after uh after a series of injuries because I think it was the shoulder against TCU in The Game Day game that he got injured two years ago and then it was just the the back issues came on I want to say he missed the opener last year on Thursday night and it just it he never shook it he he 14 of 28 games in his career he's only able to play three games last year but he is a dynamic player and if he's healthy and Lance lifeold is proven on offense they've got two strong running backs coming back and Devin Neil Daniel highshaw a couple receivers Lawrence Arnold you know had over 700 nearly 800 yards receiving last year got some experience on the offensive line supplemented that in the portal uh they went to division 2 tiffen Ohio and got the D2 Remington Award winner to Anchor Shane bum is is the gentleman's name they've got Kobe Bryant doing Mamba things in the secondary with four interceptions last year they've got Melo doson who also had four picks they've got to be better Corner pairs right but they've got to be better up front because one of the things is they weren't able last year often enough to make teams challenge those Corners because you could just run on them so you have they have to do a better job of being able to stop the run a little bit uh last two years they've been great on third down they've been great in the red zone and three of their four losses last year they got blown out by Texas but three of the four losses were by seven points or fewer and there were a couple times they had to play their third quarterback um they do have the thing that they're going to be displaced a little bit they're going to play some games in Arrowhead they're going to play some games at the soccer stadium Kansas City yeah so this is a reach this is a reach pick for me but because of what I said in the previous podcast about some people describe it as depth I'm going to describe the Big 12 as having width there are there are a lot of teams who are very similar and depending on who gets the breaks and who wins the close games that's where it's going to go so there are a lot of good quarterbacks in this league yeah so if I'm going to say who's going to win out of this wide band of similar teams I'm going to spin that Wheel of Fortune throw those Dice and go with if healthy the most dangerous quarterback maybe the most creative offense and uh and I'll go I'll go Kansas they do lose OC Andy cooki who had done a really nice job especially with Jaylen D did a great job with Jason Bean too right that would be Penn State's game and they don't have bean to come in and back correct to bail Jason was probably the best backup quarterback in college football the last couple years I mean he was he was he won them some big games he was really uh really gooder yeah there's a ton of talent returning and you just you trust Lance lipold on roster building you trust him on filling holes like the guy knows how to win football games and uh I mean Jaylen D was the leader for the Heisman Trophy when we rolled into town to game day in October of uh 2022 and uh I don't think that diamondis is gone uh early on the the reports I've gotten out of Lawrence are are very optimistic so let's just hope he can stay healthy would love to see what he can do for a full season that's good for college football okay now I'm I'm high on Utah but this is the first area of disagreement where we not only have different conference champions getting one of those top four buys but we also have different teams in the playoff because I don't have Utah in the playoff and you don't have and you only have one big 12 team if that doesn't spoil that's correct okay so do I by the and you don't have Kansas in the playoff either I'm I do not have Kansas in the playoff so that means I have my three seat open and you have your four seed open uh both of which will be the ACC champion and I'm going to say the three seed and ACC Clemson and Florida State Champion reports of their demise have been greatly exaggerated and the rest of y'all going to come on in on the Roy bus and watch the Clemson Tigers come back to the playoff as the ACC Champion let me did you see the Jeopardy bit before Florida State I did hilarious we're bring this up we'll explain that now now before Florida state gets like they could get matter but uh but um they'll let you know in a couple no they will I think Florida State wins a regular season game against Clemson because in Tallahassee rematch two really good teams Clemson wins the rematch because Clemson will be desperate to get in and Florida State will already have a spot sealed up I think both teams make the playoff and I think Clemson with improved offense and again this is a little bit of a gamble too because if if they don't get better quarterback play from Kade kumnick and if they don't get better offensive line play then they've really had in the last few years this is going to be another bad pick but I'm gambling that you're going to see some improvement in both of those areas in the in the second year under Garrett Riley um you know they've got a lot of guys coming back on on offense offensive line they got four of their starters back they got a wrecking ball at running back Phil mafa got some young receivers coming in that they're really high on uh wide receiver freshman called Bryant Wasco that they like uh TJ Moore another freshman guy that they like um have Tyler Brown back from last year and Antonio Williams returning from injury don't worry about their defense their defense is excent is going to be excellent especially up front they'll give Georgia all at wants Georgia wins the game opening opening week but they will give Georgia everything they want now did lose Andrew maaba in the in the transfer portal which apparently according to the Jeopardy AI bit why don't you explain you started this what happened what happened with the Jeopardy spoof on the social media I saw it on social media I don't know who did it whoever did they're brilliant yeah deserves a hat tip um you know how it is it pops up in your phone you look at it you laugh you share it with your friends and everything um there's a Jeopardy question with some general uh General thing that would make you ask what is the transfer portal and they go to the three contestants and there's two Earnest looking Jeopardy contestants and then there's Dabo wearing his Clemson hat looking there just standing there and then it's just like and everyone who reads the question knows the answerers to transfer portal and nobody hits the buzzer right yes nobody hits the buzzer and it buzzes out and then uh Ken Jenning says oh what is the transfer portal and then it just moves and Dabo just looks perplexed yes da Dabo looks Dabo looks perplexed can can you imagine you imagine what it's going to be like if Clemson does what I just predicted Dao remember think of Dabo in the first college football playoff news conference yeah poor little o Clemson we got here we didn't have any transfers you know we didn't take any I don't know about that a what that AI was saying about me on Jeopardy um so we'll dive in on Clemson first and then we'll go to my AC I think that's pretty much where where I stand on I think um you know I they're they're guys like uh Peter Woods who is freshman last year was really really good on the defensive line they've got really good linebackers they got another freshman coming in because they still can recruit the oldfashioned way and Sammy Brown who's a highly touted linebacker so um I think they're loaded man I mean the question is offense question is quarterback and offensive line and they still need some skill guys and need those freshmen those freshman receivers particularly that I mentioned they have to be able to make plays down the field yeah no and you mentioned Wesco TJ Moore is another guy out of Florida who they you know who is the caliber recruit they had been getting at the position and I feel like the dip of Clemson you can't even call it demise right but the dip of Clemson out of playoff contention just to being a mortal top 25 team I can directly Trace to the receiver position that's really where I feel like it was we talked about this last year in the preseason on the podcast I would say quarterback too yes quarterback take a step back they were they were generational at quarterback and now they've just been okay so yeah and there was some scheme stuff there too but I don't want to oversimplify it but I my number one reasoning above quarterback and above scheme was receiver they did not have the dudes there and they just had baller after baller first round pick after that was that was the best room in the country at that position for a handful of years and it it it became a mediocre ACC room the guys aren't bad players they just weren't good enough to get you to get you the playoff uh Antonio Williams emerged the first half of last season as a real dude he got injured a lot of optimism about him coming back Tyler Brown not a festar just from local Greenville they flipped him from Minnesota had a really productive freshman year last year so those are two lynchpins Adam Randle comes back the two young guys like I feel like this this is their best group at that position in recent years Kade kumnick I mean it's kind of now or never for Kade clck and I do feel like Garrett Riley was an improvement there but I don't feel like I'm sitting here telling you that he's the second coming of his brother Lincoln that's all like I I want I want to see more from them on offense more from them schematically uh fil mafa great back I don't love what they have behind him I just think it's okay and I can transition to my foreshadow my pick here I I want to say one more thing about Clemson if I if I could please that football must be riveted to your rib cage it must be riveted to your rib cage they lost 13 fumbles last year only Texas State and Nebraska lost more fumbles now you may say maybe you say well that's some bad luck because you're going to recover most of your fumbles or at least part of them and the stats tell you that generally speaking over a course of time you will recover about 50% of your own fumbles Clemson didn't quite do that but they were they fumbled 22 times among the most in the nation the football must be riveted to your rib cage and before I let you go to Florida State who I love to it reminds me of the Lou Holtz story he said a player would come back from fumbling and he go what happened son he said well I fumbled the ball you mean you dropped it and you didn't pick it up I me it's like us giving you the money to go to the bank all weekend you just you just put it on the you just put it on the ground let somebody get it you know and you know so Clemson just put it on the ground and let somebody get it so that's all this other stuff is important if that football is not riveted to your rib cage $ to Bill Curry none of this is going to matter okay very very fair and those are the types of punitive mistakes you cannot make in week one yeah they made a bunch of them in the Red Zone too yes exhibit a first week against Duke last year yes oh three in the red zone and then two block kicks yeah um I really feel like for Clemson and we're not going to relitigate the transfer portal since we already brought up the AI thing but I will say this part of the reason why Florida state has emerged as the best recent program in the ACC is because they have used the portal as a weapon they had 10 players drafted last year ree how many were in the portal almost all of them n yeah yes nine so and again that's not all like oneye quick fixes that's like they got a good sophomore from Mississippi State he plays two year like that is that is great program management great evaluation great buyin great culture like there's nothing negative about Florida that Florida State outsmarted everybody these players were available to everyone they had the resources they had the right infrastructure in football the right general manager the right people making the picks and analyzing the roster what they need and going out and getting the best players 58% of their starts last year came from guys who did not begin their careers at Florida State came out of the transfer portal there is an art to being able to put together teams and Coach that way Mike norell is brilliant at it it reminds me a lot um I will use an NBA analogy a little bit I've always been of the opinion that as great a coach as Phil Jackson was Phil Jackson excelled doing things like this taking great players meshing them together making them a team Phil Jackson was great we don't know if Phil Jackson could have done what say Lenny Wilkins could do Lenny Wilkins legendary coach Super Sonic Hawks and number of other teams Lenny Wilkins could have taken uh the five of us sitting in this room you me Shan Adrien and Taylor schwank master of making uh Port barbecue Lenny Wilkins could have taken us over the course of an 82 game NBA season and coached in such a way that we would have won 45 games you know I mean he he he could do all this not that Phil Jackson couldn't it's just that Phil Jackson's Brilliance he knew was getting these guys that he knew he could put them together if you're going if you're going to be able if you're going to use the portal the way Mike norell and Florida State have you've got to be extraordinarily confident in your ability to take this seate personalities from different program backgrounds and Mel them into one purpose going forward with a a singular goal and he's done that I would argue there may be someone who's done it as well no one has done it better yeah I I agree completely and they do have sort of if you look at their core roster here you know a bunch of transfers but they also have a bunch of returners because right now Mike norval took over a mess at Florida State and started slow and it was covid right so they couldn't go out and recruit so now all of a sudden you're starting to see the upper classman as guys who started to see the promise of Florida State not just the the onfield not just selling him on a dream when you look at uh you know their their star defensive tackle uh Josh Farmer for example was the first player to commit to Norville he's an all AC seat type player dominant interior lineman my pick of Florida state is because I feel like they have the best offensive and defensive lines in the ACC their offensive line again returns a ton of starts cuz even the even the guys who are going to emerge as new kind of day one starters have played uh a lot for them Darius Washington the left tackle these guys have been around forever and so I I feel like the their their fronts are so sound and so solid that everything will everything behind them should fall into place obviously it's a little bit of a bet on DJ OU angay who's been a very good college quarterback he has not been a championship college quarterback so will we see him emerge as that guy I have a lot of faith in Mike norvell's ability to maximize DJ's skill set I saw some of it in the spring I did see some of the old dju though when you watch their spring game he bounced a few balls he missed a few open receivers and then he whizzed the ball in a in a male slot a few times and you're like oh my God that guy has an armed Talent like crazy so um you know like anybody else you're going to need Malik Benson to do what he didn't do at B step up and be a consistent you know threat threat yes and in you know there are but there's just enough Talent wire to wire here I really love Patrick pton the the defensive end he had 10 tip balls last year which is a remarkable astounding amount our our boy Bill Connelly loves to Havoc plays snap call some type of disruption tip ball sacks fumble recovery strips whatever it might be he had more Havoc plays per snap among players with 500 plus snaps than any other player that's Patrick pton fla State yeah he's a first- round pick like I I don't know quite his measurables or he was going to run or whatever but his production um and the best looking guy on that defense is Marvin Jones J fromg he obviously uh you know the last transfer from Georgia they got Jermaine johnon worked out pretty well I think he ended up as the 11th pick in the draft does that sound right like yeah so I'm say Marvin Jones is going to be the 11th pick in the draft but if he ends up as a first round pick that wouldn't surprise me he's a toolsy toolsy dude the production needs to match the potential but interior when you have darl Jackson Josh farmer you have two guys that are like those are rare birds in the ACC so they look like an team up front on both sides and I feel like they uh they go back to back and uh it'll be a great story Florida state in the playoff so I'm excited I think they make the playoff as well um do you think that Roy Dale Williams and Malik Benson and Terrence Ferguson wear their college football playoff gear in Tallahassee after they transfer from Alabama you know I don't think that would be recommended I'd probably leave in the Box I think that fan base is a little raw from that still so I think they have enough self-awareness there's a bit on Twitter this summer about uh that they kept popping up of like kids going to camps you know you go to I'm going to make it up Yukon Camp cuz we're sitting in Connecticut and you're wearing um mask gear and like the coach is getting mad about it that's become a consistent thing so I think like they live the camp circuit they they know what's wrong I saw um I was actually in Tuscaloosa to interview Sabin after he decided to retire I actually saw royell Williams and his family oh headed headed to Tallahassee so they shortly after uh shortly after that and and in the spring game and I watched you guys did a great job with also um what Jaylen Lucas right from Indiana a really different kind of back Gadget kind of a gadget guy yeah so I think both of those teams make the playoff out of the ACC so now um let's let's go ahead and go our group of five champion and then that way we can get down to the last team in like that that would be who's your group of it's almost like you've done these shows where you need to build drama from the college football playoff once or twice right so we I assume you think that the next the last automatic bid which does not mean you'll be the fifth seed just that you will get in the field I assume you think that will be the 12th seed correct I am placing Boise State as the Liberty and Boise 12th suit uh I feel like they bring back the core of their offensive line Ashton Genty is a top three running back in college football the NFL views him that way I think he he made a really interesting decision to return to Boise that maybe followed like he could have gone somewhere and made you know 3/4 of a million dollars and I think he knew he was dominant back he knew he'd get carries he knew he could showcase himself there and show Improvement and uh it's just hard to roll into like a big SEC campus and be a bcow guy right away and so and you're running against really good teams right like at Boise they play Oregon this year but you're not you know Arkansas is the worst team on your schedule in the SEC and they would be the second best team on Boise schedule so I really feel like from a business standpoint production wear and tear in winning NFL values winning he made a great decision now you have a new full-time head coach in Spencer Danielson um there's you know there's a solid defense that returns I have a lot of faith in Dirk cutter who was a brilliant hire at OC that guy seen he been NFL head coach he's been the Boise head coach he's been the Arizona State head coach he's an elite developer of quarterbacks whether that's uh whether that's Maliki Nelson or not we'll we'll find out here in the spring that is that is certainly um where the uh you know where where the stars would lead us but um you know I don't think it's I don't think it's feda comple yet either that it's uh that it's G to be him so I I like Boise a lot um I feel like the pieces are there and the schedule is there for them to go and and and carry the momentum that They Carried uh that They carried at the end of last season after they fired Andi AOS and smer Danos gave that place a uh gave that place like a real true adrenaline shot now I'm not going to count out uh Mad Dog Madson in the quarterback race he won them a lot of games last year he's a good player is a true battle in Camp this year you know they're not Bo is not the kind of place that's just going to give a guy a starting job because he had a lot of stars by his name in high school but uh yeah I'm excited to see what they can do there's a lot of talent returning it's a good roster I like boisey as well Liberty made the uh New Year's six game last year is undefeated Champion they've got Kaden Salter back um they've done a tremendous job they've got guys coming back for Jim they could I don't think their schedule we'll get him there we've talked about this think the uh the committee probably uh had a little bit of a lapse in judgment maybe an oversight is a better way to put it to go with liberty and went with the zero there but you know to their credit it's hard to go undefeated I don't care who you play they did I think their hardest game this year is at app it is it is I also like uh I like Texas State I think they've got Jordan McLoud who transferred from JMU quarterback GJ Kenny is probably a rising star in coaching I think they could do it I think USF with uh with Alex goolish in his second year there and quarterback Byron Brown who I like Byron Brown a 3,000 1,000 not ining sacks rushing 4,000 yards of offense before you take away the sack yardage they've got tough schedule I think they've got uh they've got Alabama and Florida State I think pretty early say they play Miami oh M maybe it's Miami you're right let me let me double check you're right my mistake not Florida States Miami got Alabama and Miami early but they just have to win their league they don't have to win those G they could just make some but I think the team that's going to come out of there as a group of five representative I'm going to go with Memphis yeah they've got Seth henan coming back at quarterback they've got rock Taylor who had over a thousand yards receiving dangerous guy and perhaps Ryan silverfield learned from Mike norell the former coach at Miami yeah because among the 29 guys out of the portal that he that he took to uh supplement his roster at Memphis he took Tennessee's leading tackler in Elijah Herring and South Carolina's leading rusher in Mario Anderson I'm gonna I'm going to say Memphis coming off a 10- win season gets that last spot there this is what I was thinking they are at Florida State in on September 14th they have to go to USF which is one of the reasons that you know I think USF could get in there they have to go to UTSA who also could be in this mix a little bit they have to go to Tain who may be rebuilding so they they've got a little bit of a dicey Road schedule but I think with some of the experience they have with all that FedEx nil money coming in that uh that we're you know we're in in good shape we're in good shape there so I'm going to say Memphis gets the 12th the final automatic bid and the 12th seed in the playoff hard to disagree with with a lot of the logic there um I'm just going to go with uh with big blue all right either way uh either way they'll enjoy getting their getting their shot okay now we've got to figure don't look no I I've looked over there we're goingon to do a milk taste test soon and I I'll real hardcore listeners to the Pod because I don't I don't believe for your own good and your own health only drink milk that comes from a cow or possibly from a goat other things aren't really milk they're like this off the rails this is we have to pick a few more playoff teams still anyway I do think we overlapped on a bunch of these though so we did we've got we we've already got two teams in the B we tackled Georgia and Ohio State I'm going off my non-champions so we really have like five teams each that seem new to me here okay so I'll I will give you one right off the top here that I believe will be the number five seed MH meaning the first seed that does not get a bu they will be they will play whoever the 12th seed is and they will have a home playoff game and this will Delight the masses hotti totty gosham Mighty who the hell are they hey Flim Flam BIM Bam oh miss by dang I already said one bad word that's way too many for a podcast I like to keep this PG if not G but at any rate I think Lane kein and the rebels have a sensational season Jackson Dart is back they've got depending on how you count it about 20 starters coming back Dart threw for over 3,300 yards he can run the ball uh they're good at running back even without Judkins with ulyses Bentley coming back uh they they got a a double transfer transfer coming back to them from Miami at running back Henry Parish who was started Old Miss went to Miami back at Old Miss now they got jakori cross get married who transferred from New Mexico after getting nearly 12200 yards on the ground they got guys coming in on the defensive line to help them uh Prince Ley Umami Ellen from Florida they got Walter Nolan who was a highly talented recruit from A&M that's where they've had their shortfall size power up front they got juice Wells from South Carolina to come in help him an offense he's tremendous I think Old Miss is going to have a great year so I'm pretty bullish on Old Miss said this last year from the Rose Bowl after they were playing they thought they would have Judkins back then but just a number of guys had returning were they a top five team put my money where my mouth is but only do so if you can afford to and remember there is always a risk when you do such a thing but I will take Miss as the fifth seed we've got several of the same teams who else do you have in this playoff as an at large so I would say Georgia and Ohio State so we we've discussed them plenty um you know they would come in right in post playoff games in in the at llarge in mind I guess my first surprise one would be cuz I don't have Old Miss I have Missouri um now again all of in modern college football there are no there there's always going to be large areas of uncertainty I have a lot of questions about Missouri's defense especially at corner um but I do feel like there is enough on the offense at o line at tight end they have arguably the most dynamic player in the country and Luther Burton you can make a Zachariah Branch thing but he has not produced Luther Burton is produced yes he's produced excellent in his freshman year and he was Elite last year as an all SEC type guy so I feel like he can take a step and the schedule is paved for Missouri to do this so um again Blake Baker's gone on defense there are there are questions I'm not going to you know uh do that but the schedule allows them a little bit like Old Miss quite frankly the schedule allows them to find themselves and then to put the hammer down when they need to our last pod when we talked about the team just on the edge I told you I thought Missouri would be the first team out so I I won't be surprised at all if uh drinks Tigers end up making the field so here I have Old Miss as the highest seated unlar which would mean home game we've talked about Oregon I have them as the next seed as an at large that would mean home game Texas you have them as conference Champion I have them as another at large team from the home uh that would see 52 61 710 we give them a home game and then Texas we get it and then the last home game I have is another team we've already talked about and that's Florida State yes uh Florida State as the other team from the ACC if Clemson does indeed win the league would get the final home game as an eight seed so I have Miami there you have Miami It's the final home game and we talk Alabama and Miami about these picks on the on the Pod uh when we do our picks pod every Friday with our friend Stanford Steve and there's the picks you make and then you immediately go in the fetal position CU you hate the picks and I always pride myself in avoiding those picks but I feel like for the playoff there had to be one of them and so I'm going to take Miami bet on just pure talent talent brought in at quarterback Talent brought in at tailback Talent Returns on the offensive line uh Talent brought in at receiver the defense is again pretty salty I just feel like at a certain point you can accumulate enough talent to overcome the odd late game clock mismanagement um to overcome some of the the it seems like their coordinator issues are over they it feels like Mario has the right guys in place there now um I don't say it with conviction but I do feel like Talent will win out I feel like they can go to Gainesville and win get a huge amount of momentum starting there early um yeah but that is definitely one of those picks by uh by Nightfall on opening weekend I could be uh I could have pangs of regret but I just I look at wire to wire Talent at Miami I think they're ahead of Clemson and that's why I have them there that leaves us with three spots 9 10 11 at number nine and going to Tallahassee for an oncampus playoff game because well of course it has to be this way I've got Alabama and Kaylin deor in the first year going to see Florida State and I mean there might be a little juice around that game could be some juice the Greg burb is that what you want to call it Greg Greg Burns uh post Christmas plans New Year's plans um that would be fun and I mean look there are going to be some monster playoff games and I have no idea how talk to anybody game day about where we're going to go and how we're going to pick all I know is wherever we end up it's going to be awesome is it going to be Wisconsin in the snow I'm just making it up is it going to be some crazy matchup I'm looking what I have here like maybe it's uh you know Penn State Notre Dame or something like that like I just feel like boy there could be some awesome memorable sort of games that may have been played before on occasion but just uh really really cool match ups I feel like any playoff anyone anytime any it's all missing a playoff game there it's just like the party of a of the decade right so I just I as we've talked about the season and the excitement around it those first round home playoff games just add this new layer to the sport that I I I can't get enough of as for Alabama making the playoff there will be some bumps in the road when you make this type of transition when you lose uh players of the caliber of Caleb DS to the portal when you lose some of the couple of guys that got drafted especially in the secondary and Nick Sabin has said that uh on SEC media days coverage that secondary was the biggest question they're having to rely on some transfers there appreciate it his honesty yeah de Jackson coming from USC Keon Sab from Michigan just to name a couple uh also you know they have a star studied class of freshman DBS and receivers are also improving but they've got the offensive line they've got two emerging stars at running back and Justice Haynes and jam Miller and they've got Jaylen milro who if we know anything about a kayin dbor offense they put the quarterback in the very best position to succeed uh they do they get Georgia at home they have to go to LSU have to go to Oklahoma and have to go to Wisconsin yeah um it's not and ten and they have to go to Tennessee difficult not overwhelming and with a 12 team field they probably have enough room to lose two yes which they probably will and maybe they lose three they probably won't make it unless they lose all three the way uh the way they lost the games a couple years ago and they didn't make it you know last play stuff like that um so I've got them as the nine seed going in you had Miami next team I have in Pete is Notre Dame okay I got Notre Dame as a 10 seed and that would answer your question I think even though Alabama Florida state would be big it would be hard to pass on Notre Dame Matt Texas if my my if my matchups were right in a 710 on campus playoff Notre Dame and Penn State match slot machine that that'd be that would be something else uh so I have Notre name as my 11 and I have Penn State next there so again talk about those two teams because I have pen State as yeah we're we're kind of in the same uh in in the same neighborhood there uh you want to start with Notre Dame sure start with Notre Dame so uh as we mentioned on the Pod the other day and we'll see on uh on game day here in a few weeks I did a little fishing trip with Riley Leonard so I've got a pretty good uh pretty good beat on Notre Dame we did just find out in the last week or two that uh that Notre starting left tackle who was supposed to be extremely talented but also was very to replace Joe correct he's gone and look they've they've recruited really well at that position and they've earned the benefit out of the doubt there's some crazy statistic that you probably have that I don't have the top of my head of like consecutive tackles drafted and how much money they've made at Notre Dame so obviously that was Charles jagosh uh I may not be pronouncing that right who uh was hurt in the first week of camp and gone for the season torn PE yes that's a that's a big loss because again he projected to be very good he's a red shirt freshman he was a big recruit but like he was an unknown so now uh it looks like it'd be suvan abshure who may take over that left tackle spot now who knows if they flip uh Tosh Baker from right to left I don't know H how they're going to do it um yet and that but like I just think if you're going to pick Notre Dame as as we did you go right to the o line right and then you go right to Mitchell Evans the tight end and you go to ryy Leonard's ability to to run which maybe they didn't have with Sam Hartman um I'm really bullish on their dline Reese I feel like Howard cross has been unbelievably productive y um so is Riley Mills and um I think their receiving court at Notre Dame has been a lot like Clemson the last few years it is just sort of been predictably pedestrian and held them back uh it feels better this year they've gone to the portal to really go get some uh to go get some established guys um but I feel like Jaden greous if he makes that jump and a guy like Chris Mitchell or maybe Bo Collins who never quite found it at Clemson can go there and do it so anyway I think it's a very good Notre Dame team with a manageable schedule and uh yeah Marcus Freeman did tell me this spring that um he does occasionally drive by the stadium and think what it would look like in the snow so we would have them on the road but it would be really fun to have Notre Dame at home for a playoff game that would be Sensational on that defensive front they also they got another transfer from duke not just Riley Leonard RJ Obin coming in there outside of will Johnson at Michigan and Travis Hunter at Colorado I think you can make the case maybe Benjamin Morrison is right there maybe the third best Elite yeah third best corner you're talking picked first I know I know that that somewhat is a subtle dig at your man crush will Johnson no no no hey Morrison's a great player he's a really good player I I I can I can man you man crush on him too and just make it the year of the corners because like like both those guys not like Travis Hunter obviously as everyone does at at that position as well and among the wide receivers that you might see what if what if you see O'Reilly Leonard spending the magic bean to Tyler Buckner isn't Tyler Tyler Buckner back to play lros he's back he's gonna play Receiver right I believe Tyler Buckner started that god- awul set football back Alabama USF game am I right about that yes and so when you mentioned that I was actually going to make a make a joke and we were just fine and I didn't but yes Tyler Buckner after I believe he won a national title in Lacrosse right he did yeah so um you know being a Syracuse scat I got a little lacrosse Affinity so like a guy who can uh who can do that so yeah he's he's back there that would be you know if they're up big in against a Max School in September that'd be a pretty fun moment for that fan base if those two connected for a touchdown pass you mentioned the offensive line and has always been good but it's also one of the least experienced offensive lines in the country and opening at A&M will not make it easy because they have a strong defensive line but they sort of booked their season they start with A&M they've got to go to SC at the end but obviously the huge game which you know unless they're undefeated when they get there the huge game that might tell the tale about whether they get in is when Florida State comes in on November 9th um I got a feeling we don't have a crystal ball that we could be we could be wear we could be wearing scarves in South Ben that that morning that would be that would be quite the scene yes what Notre Dame was awesome last year when we were there they were they put on a great show one of the underrated crowds because you start thinking James Madison uh you know some of the huge Notre Dame was Colorado was great Notre Dame was Sensational AES and every time we've been to Penn State it's been great too you and I both have them in the playoff they have to be better on offense they have to throw the ball down the field I'm going to I'm going to look at the stats so I make sure that I I get it right with Aller last year in the big games against Michigan 70 yards passing 191 against Ohio State and it didn't feel like 191 for watching on the sidelines can he produce some big games will he throw it downfield will Penn State make big plays you mentioned Andy Ki from Kansas now going over in his first year as the offensive coordinator they also have a new defensive coordinator and Tom Allen former Indiana head coach who takes over for Manny Diaz who's now the head coach at Duke you kind of know what you're going to get on defense I think I you feel like they're still going to be good they've been elite under Manny the last couple of years on defense Carter is a game record they've got yes but offense they've got Nicholas Singleton they've got KRON Allen but they're looking for as sort of a theme with some of the they're looking for Playmakers on the outside and they also have to get Aller to be less risk aversive he threw 25 touchdowns and only two interceptions that's great but if you're so risk aversive that you're also not giving yourself enough chances to make big plays I think the new offensive system will will alleviate most of that you agree uh I do um look when I think of that uh Michigan game last year it just didn't feel like they attempted to pass beyond the line of scrimmage some of that was scheme but some of that may have just been all or not being comfortable taking risks right it was it was an elite defense they were facing and I think part of a player's maturation in college is understanding risk management that's that's that's an intuitive thing that's a hard thing it's hard to coach it's it's a feel thing and so um Andy CLE Nikki is is is a really creative offensive coach and with the talent they have at tailback I'm a little worried about their tackles because they got two new ones um but I I feel like the o line Phil trout line has built that thing from a from a weakness to a strength now and you know they're going to be they're going to be fine uh they're going to be fine there I think Julian Fleming gives them a burner and from Ohio State from Ohio former I believe number one overall recruit in the country or perhaps you know depending on the service number one receiver in the country from Pennsylvania so um there's there I think Tyler Warren could be or is one of the best tight ends in the Big 10 I feel like that is the kind of guy that Andy will find way to use creatively and uh and be good but yeah again I have Penn State there I like Penn State like everybody else there are a few you have to make a few logic leaps to to to Really to really push them in there and be convicted about it they avoid Michigan Oregon and Iowa on the schedule under this 12 team format in which we are including them they would have been in the playoff six of the previous eight years okay in a 12 team field Franklin though still has to deal with being three and 177 against top 10 opponents and the other thing is Manny Diaz and the I mean Tom Allen's a really good defensive coach he's proven that over the years Diaz the last two years they were plus 27 in turnovers turnover chain left Miami and apparently went to State College Rush Defense number one in the country yards per carry against Rush Defense number one in the country Total Defense number two scoring Defense number three sacks number one defense still has a lot to live up to but the offense needs to give them a little more latitude and they're going to be tested against the sneaky good West Virginia team on the road on on the first Saturday when the playoff conversation comes if they go win or if they go lose they are credited for going to play that game those are games of the lifeblood of college football we need people to still schedule those games we do not need Penn State playing abene Christian in the opener that's just not good for anybody they get Ohio State Beaver Stadium not white out I saw on the social media they announced their specialty games that is the stripe game and the following week against Washington as a reigning National runner up comes into Happy Valley unless I misread it which I hope I didn't someone will correct me because that'll be the white out yeah and that's probably the deal Ohio state is probably a noon game and then Washington will be a night game and therefore the white out game but so there you go I think we've picked a playoff for you Davis I think we have I look forward to uh being right about every pick mocking you all season well you probably will so let's leave it this way the one pick you are most confident in and the pick that you are least confident in among your 12 teams it's great it's a great question because we we often analyze our picks after we make them when we see each other and and you know I we had a term for the one that gives you like like a like a Pepto pick like you immediately feel like you need an acid when you make it so my Pepto pick is Miami like I I love their talent but you know I still have uh you know until Mario crystal ball shows he can manage end games better like it's hard to it's hard to be convicted about someone who has had such persistent struggles managing games okay and and you're locked in pick the one you said your most
