[Music] disgrace former fashion Mogul Peter nyard has been sentenced to 11 years in prison following his sexual assault convictions good afternoon the 83-year-old was convicted on four charges last November however his sentencing was delayed several times with issues such as retaining legal counsel C TV Sean Woodward has been following the proceedings he joins us live now outside the courthouse with the latest John Michelle after that sentence was read out there were hugs in the courtroom one woman Sayang So Long Farewell uh the end of a court case that is stretch on for a long time resulting in a sentence of 11 years for the disgraced former fashion Mogul uh with time served that works out to 6.7 years uh justice Goldstein read out a clip that or a quote that we'll show you right now that sums up much of this case Peter nyard is a sexual predator he is also a Canadian success story gone very wrong he used his wealth and power to commit four sexual and sexual assaults uh the sentence an astonishing Fall From Grace for the 83-year-old former fashion designer whose name once adorned buildings related to his fashion company one of those buildings was in Toronto's Liberty Village where a cour herd he had a private Suite on the top floor where he controlled who went in and who went out and Lord women who were expecting a meeting about business or modeling uh jobs into and brought them into that room where he violently sexually assaulted them the most uh recent the first was in 1989 the most recent and around 2005 that woman uh 16 according to the court with the judge saying niggard displayed willful blindness about her age the Justice said a period in 1998 when nygard's chief of security came to Toronto uh was arguably part of an attempt to intimidate the witnesses and something that was successful at that time when the when the uh witness stopped cooperating with police um we heard today from some people who have been watching this case at length and a very emotional time so let's hear from them it's a mixed range of emotions always it's been an absolute roller coaster a terrifying roller coaster up and down even just over the summer with delay after delay after delay and I think for so many victims these brave brave brave victim survivors that are with me and more than 50 that I've treated and supported throughout the last four and a half nearly 5 years um the the the overarching message I think until today until we really heard that judgment uh and I for me the words of the Judgment mean more than the numbers it was a very validating judgment from Justice Goldstein validating vindicating um the giving voice to the to the suffering of these women I didn't get the chance to raise my son because of nard and I'm just I'm done hiding I won't do it anymore but for those of you women that cannot or just just can't do it please don't worry don't worry you're okay I've got you Shannon's we've got you we've got you and it's okay you know just don't worry he's not coming out of jail he's still got if he's hopefully going to Federal he still has to go to Montreal you know and the thing is is that he's been so cushioned in Winnipeg he had extra beding extra everything he's never been in general population and with everything inside of me I'm hoping that he will finally get to general population and then I can feel like there's Justice cuz right now there's been none much was made in the court by the defense about nygard's deteriorating health condition and when he appeared in court today he was wheeled in in a wheelchair wearing a large black puffy jacket with a hoodie pulled over his head and also a visor that appeared to be made out of paper but the judge dismissed a lot of those uh health concerns saying niggard was exaggerating and also wasn't just given special treatment in prison was given very special treatment including access to a phone whenever he wanted uh and so uh discounted many of those concerns also nigar despite his visual appearance was writing furiously and appeared to be following the proceedings closely uh niggard has uh other charges including ones in the United States uh that are to come after this when you include uh time served uh the sentence drops to 6.7 years and uh he'll be eligible for parole in just over 800 days but again with other cases and other jurisdictions still to come reporting live I'm John Woodward Nathan back to you thank you John A man is dead after being struck by a vehicle in North York police say the man who's believed to be in his 40s was struck at Noon Air Canada is warning about a possible shutdown as talks with its Pilots Union remain at a standstill we'll have more what this could mean for travelers a little later in the newscast Premier Doug Ford made a trip to Prince Edward County this morning he was asked about the timeline for an election in Ontario following recent developments at the federal level including the NDP ending its Supply in confidence agreement with the Liberals ctv's Queens power bureau chief Siobhan Morris has been following this story and joins us live now with more details sioban well those Federal developments are interesting to watch here at Queens Park because there's been a lot of Buzz here that the premier and his party may want to send ontarians back to the polls ahead of any cada wide vote the wisdom from Doug Ford's party is that they may want to try to get ahead of any potential anti-conservative backlash that may come with the election of Pier POV remember that in federal polling he is way out in front as it is the Ontario PCS have already been campaigning against Justin Trudeau on things like the carbon tax the premier today again ruled out any election this year but says they haven't decided anything for 2025 that would still be an election over a year ahead of what is planned Ford turned to an attack line that is being used by his Federal cousins today accusing the federal NDP leader of being more focused on locking in his pension I'll be floored and I'll I'll stand up here and apologize to all the greedy politicians uh if he calls the election early but let's face it he wants his pension he's not going anywhere until uh October let's say 20th 20 25 uh because there's him and a whole bunch of other politicians that want to grab the taxpayers money so my bet is he's not doing anything he's just putting on a big show like he has for the last number of years there Federal leader jug meet Singh has said that it's not true that securing a pension has anything to do with his decision-making process reporting live from Queens Park I'm Siobhan Morris Michelle back to you thank you Siobhan there are still a couple more weeks of summer in the city but Beach season in Toronto has aici come to an end supervision and maintenance had already stopped at most of Toronto's public beaches after Labor Day but those Services had been extended at several locations through to yesterday because of warmer weather meanwhile 10 outdoor pools will remain open through to September 22nd and we have more news in a moment but first there's a live look at the city this afternoon we had some rain earlier today along with but the sun is out and there are some clouds as well there is a warmup on on the way over the next few days summer not over Jessica Smith is here with a look at the current conditions that shot did look gray but I did see some sunshine earlier it's a little bit unsettled but the good news is it does get sunnier as we head throughout the week and a little warmer we are looking at a bit of a cold front it's a pretty weak system but it is impacting us throughout the day today with just a little bit of rain here and there as we get through our Monday so it's not the worst but it's not the best temperature wise it is going to be impacted by the wind southwesterly right now pretty light it becomes Westerly and the northwesterly into the second half of the day so it's a little bit of a fresher start to the week but things do get better right now we're kind of sitting in the mid upper teens a little warmer around the Golden Horseshoe through Hamilton and Niagara and then as we step throughout the rest of the week things will start to change pretty dramatically right now through the islands and over towards Pearson between about 15 and 19 again the wind direction will change into the second half of the day it does feel a little cooler and we're still watching for the chance of a few pop-up showers by no means is it going to be a downpour but a good idea if you have outdoor plans to keep the rain gear handy coming up I'll have a full look at your longrange forecast we'll kind of break down when the system really pushes out what you can expect for the week ahead as we settle into the kind of midpoint of September summer is not over officially just yet all those details in a moment right now back to Michelle and Nathan thanks Jess the prime minister is in BC this week hoping to Rally his party during an annual strategy session but Justin Trudeau is in a vulnerable position having lost a support deal with the NDP along with the resignation of the party's national campaign aign director ctv's Colton pril has the details a grim picture for liberals as party MPS Gather in N Nimo this week I've ripped up the supply and confidence agreement Canada's political landscape has undergone a seismic shift Justin Trudeau's NDP support is gone the party's national campaign director is resigning at the end of the month and the Liberals are languishing with just 21% support there is a general mood of uh definit worry but I also think that there is resolve uh on uh the need to proceed to come up with a plan Trudeau is yet to offer a glimpse of what that plan could be but as economic issues remain voters top priority former Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney is set to address caucus we've had an entire summer of nothing no reaction no adjustment no alteration even as they lose byelections even as the polls show them far behind and even as the NDP walk away some strategists argue acting as a true minority government for the first time in 2 years is actually a gift even as the block ketqua says it's a chance for them to exert new found leverage now without kind of the burden of that agreement they also have the opportunity to bring things back a little bit to the center and to be not defined by the NDP agenda he will not quit but pollsters say voters hoping to beat Pierre PV are more likely to shift to the new Democrats than the Liberals I don't think the problem is the campaign director or you know the team trying to figure out how to sell the product frankly when you ask Canadians the problem is the product itself Trudeau won't have to wait long for his next big test on the same day Parliament Returns His party faces a crucial Montreal byelection and risks losing a seat in what's typically been a safe writing Colton PR CTV News Ottawa and Alberta judge is expected to hand down sentences today for two men convicted for their roles in the CPS border blockade in August Anthony alen and Chris carber were convicted of public mischief and possessing a firearm alen was also convicted of possessing a pipe bomb a jury found them not guilty of conspiracy to murder police officers the crown has called for a 9-year prison sentence while their defense has argued they should Simply Be sentenced to time already served nearly seven weeks since a wildfire forced the evacuation of Jasper National Park Parks Canada says the fire is finally under control we're calling it an undercontrol status that means that the Wildfire has received sufficient suppression action to ensure no further uh spread outside the defined uh perimeter of the fire The Incident Commander says the fire is roughly 327 square kilometers in size it destroyed approximately a third of the historic town fire crews are continuing to monitor hotspots and Patrol the fire line both on the ground and in helicopters they say smoke and Flames may be visible into the early winter we're actually in very good shape for the next 25 to 30 years because while there's going to be a bunch of of uh vegetation that comes back actually quite quickly that new and young vegetation tends to be more fire resistant meanwhile a new Forest is beginning to emerge amid the charge stumps and fire damaged trees which cover most of the wabaso and Whistler campgrounds The Jasper fire started as multiple fires that merged into one that ripped through the forest which was the driest it had been since the park began recording at the current weather station back in 1962 the fire was so intense it created its own weather system with powerful winds uh with winds rather powerful enough to toss a shipping contain container at a campground into the Athabasca River a candidate is warning passengers about a looming shutdown as contract negotiations with thousands of Pilots remain at a standstill the airline says unless an agreement is reached by September 15th a 72-hour strike or lockout notice could be issued air candidate says it would gradually suspend flights as early as that day the pilot Union has been advocating for wage increases in line with their us counterparts and for more on this story we're joined by CTV Scott first Scott both sides have you've gotten any details about the state of the negotiations well both sides have been at this Nathan for a year and a half but now we're hearing from Air Canada about its plans and how it plans to ground planes and that could happen as you mentioned within a week if these two sides don't come to an agreement and Air Canada says it could begin as early as next Sunday a 3-day phased shutdown we don't know exact numbers flight numberb numbers when or where these flights could begin to be cancelled but it will take a couple days Air Canada says to get to a full shutdown now the two sides have been negotiating as I mentioned since last summer the airline pilots Association which represents more than 5,400 aviators recently voted overwhelmingly to approve a strike mandate and they're in position to walk off the job as early as September 17th the pilots are looking to Air Canada to address retirement and scheduling concerns but also most notably salaries Air Canada says the union demands are excessive however the union had previously said it is looking South of the Border the four biggest US Airlines and their pilots have secured New Deals over the past year and a half with some flight Crews earning up to double what their Air Canada counterparts currently make and so with this threat looming Air Canada is now outlining its plans on how it will get to a shutdown Nathan wow so if that happens what will that mean for traff it would be quite a significant hurdle for travelers of course Air Canada has hundreds of flights it operates every day and according to Air Canada's own numbers it could impact more than 110,000 passengers daily this is not just coast to coast of course but Air Canada operates many flights overseas and so this would be a significant burden for travelers not just here in Canada but around the world as well relying on Air Canada right now the airline says it it is allowing customers with bookings between September 15th and the 23rd to make changes at no cost but uh as we get closer and closer to when Air Canada says it might start to it might need to begin cancelling flights uh of course the these two sides are doing their best to get to an agreement we hear that they are talks are continuing but the two sides are significantly far apart with wagees being one of the sticking points here all right CTV Scott Hurst on an Air Canada Pilot's possible strike or lockout thank you thanks Nathan turning our attention to us politics kamla Harris and Donald Trump are set to square off in their first and potentially only debate of the presidential race tomorrow several polls show Harris and Trump with roughly equal support ahead of this debate which is being hosted by ABC News in Philadelphia there will be no studio audience and neither candidate will be allowed to have props or pre-written notes many have not seen kamla Harris take questions since she took her place at top the ticket and there are still nagging questions about who kamla Harris is but also what she stands for and what she plans to do as president so this will be an opportunity for her to actually be able to reset for the American people but more importantly uh this will be an opportunity for them to see kamla Harris in that position as possibly Commander in Chief both candidates have also agreed to keep microphones muted when the other is speaking it's day five of the Toronto International Film Festival and the stars are back on the red carpet riff rfh is making his Premiere at the Princess of Wales theater the film stars Ed Harris Gabrielle unun and Bill Murray and CTV sea Le thong has been on the red carpet and joins us live with more Sean the cast looks pretty good it's outstanding Nathan and Michelle Bill Murray here just a little while ago also has Jennifer kulage and Pete Davidson now this is a bit of a dark comedy that focuses on a family that is inv involved in crime but I wanted to focus on the idea of Comedy itself now when Bill Murray was walking on the red carpet he said he wanted to do this because of the writer John palano he says the script itself had a lot of twists and turns and Murray was talking about just how much fun it is to make comedies and on that note I asked him you know you don't see as many comedies these days so what is it about the industry that is showing fewer comedies and here's what he Ed Harris and the writer John palano had to say I think comedy's uh coming back I think I think uh Sean Baker's film shows us that you know that's where the you know that's where the fun is I think comedy is King you know I think people like to get together and laugh so I I think it's going to it's returning I think it's kind of unique in a way I mean it's really you know it's got It's a good story it's well paced there's some really great there's some hysterical stuff in it but it's also some pretty heavy drama too so hopefully people will like it this is a material that's written for an audience it that's it it's written for the visceral experience of being in there and giving yourself permission to laugh at stuff you wouldn't ear laugh at to go on a journey and to like just lean forward into it it's like an experience you know what I mean it's a it's a movie I think you could watch a couple of times it's like a hangout film but you'll get pulled in those are my favorite movies my favorite plays my favorite material is like that that you lean in cuz you're like you don't quite know what's going to happen but most importantly is you you connect with the characters so what was tricky for some of the actors is the fact that there was so many Heavy Hitters in comedy I asked Gabrielle Union and Jennifer kulage did they ever break when they were filming now Gabrielle Union said there were a few times where she had to sort of turn her head away just to fight off a lap Jennifer kulage said 100% she couldn't help it she was in scenes with Bill Murray you're going to laugh now there's a lot more coming up at the Toronto International Film Festival this afternoon myself and Andrew Case will have more at 5 and six but for now Michelle throw back to you oh we look forward to it thanks Sean some music icons walked the red carpet at Tiff last night Bruce Springstein was in town for the premiere of the documentary Road diary Bruce Springstein and the E Street Band the film which is narrated by Springsteen offers an inside look at the band's career and previews their efforts to prepare for their first tour in six years every time we go out it's it's honestly it's a it's a new adventure you know I think this one was particularly meaningful and I'm so glad that Tom captured it because after six or seven years uh I'm sure the audience was wondering you know what are we going to get here right going to get a bunch of old men you know sort of going through the motions and and uh we made sure that that was not the case uh and it starts with Bruce's writing you know letter to you is just as good a record as as you can write the documentary will have five showings throughout the festival this week the sixth annual Tiff tribute awards were handed out at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel last night the fundraiser honors the film industry's outstanding contributors and their achievements the honores this year included Angelina Jolie who received the tribute award in Impact media Amy Adams was recognized with the performer award and Canadian Sandra o served as the first honorary chair of the awards I feel like I always got to be first I don't know this is what we do no but I'm happy to do so because it's like you know it's right I have a really long relationship with Tiff and I'm happy to be here to give back and also you know to see uh familiar faces the gala is Tiff's largest annual fundraiser all proceeds this year will support every story fund dedicated to promoting Equity diversity inclusion and belonging in film the stars are in town and so are the showers thanks to a cold front making its way through so if you're heading out to take in any Tiff events or just enjoying your Monday the rain gear probably a good idea we are watching for scattered showers often on as the system makes its way out with a northwesterly flow to the wind cooling it down coming up your full forecast we'll break down when we will finally see some [Music] sunshine an all new September week is here and wow it got chilly over the weekend I mean people were pulling out their coats sweaters I was at a soccer game blankets it was really chilly but I think what helps is that knowing the fact that we're going to have another warm up which means Summer's not over yet yeah I mean I I love to say Summer's not over but when you see those temps in the mid 20s and even higher then that makes it real that we know we're going to get hopefully a strong ending to this uh month and the fall Seas season I feel like a lot of times we get these little bit of a cold snap and all of a sudden everyone's like it's over the Summer's over and it's I'm dramatic I get it but it's not over just yet it was a cooler weekend it was windy too if you were outside which really didn't help but the good news is after we get through today it's that slow but steady climb I think I can I think I can towards seasonal and above weather is brought to you by by the prer law firm injury lawers you don't pay unless they win now we saw some showers this morning we saw some sun we saw some sun and showers we got a little bit of everything as we made our way throughout the day and that's going to continue it's a rinse and repeat forecast as we head throughout our Monday it's the time of year where you have to wear you know a sweater in the morning and a t-shirt in the afternoon and then your parka in the evening if you're spending time outside but we're in that transitional time but we are still holding on to a ton of warmth as we head throughout the week now temperature- wise we're sitting at 19 by no means is that cold but it feels cool in comparison and as winds shift this afternoon you'll notice that bit of a coold Down almost everybody kind of in that mid to Upper teen range for the most part with the exception of some portions of Northern Ontario throughout the day today again a few spots of showers here and there but overall it's honestly not that far off the seasonal mark it just feels really cool because we've had such a warm and to this like standard summer season the meteorological start to fall was on the 1 so we've kind of seen this bit of a a yo-yo back and forth but we will start to kind of average out towards sunny and seasonal temperatures as we head in towards the middle point of our week into this evening we're pretty much right on par where we should be but we're seeing some cooler temperatures there are some Frost advisories through portions of Ontario and Quebec and we're looking at just three degrees through bankra seven over in Peterboro and eight through waterl region we're looking at that little bit of a weak cold front making its way through and that's going to push through this afternoon a lot of it is gone by the early evening and we're holding on to a bit of a fresher night although it is seasonal because of that kind of northwesterly flow to the winds so as we head throughout the rest of our day we're kind of holding on to pockets of shower activity a little more intense the further east you go into the early evening relatively clear so if you do have outdoor evening plans not so bad then as we settle in toward your Tuesday Wednesday Thursday high pressure returns to our forecast clearing things out and a much more stable air mass as we head throughout the majority of the week so you might still want the layer or two if you're up really early but overall we're holding on to seasonal or just above as we head throughout the week again today it's a little fresh a little messy but through your Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday it only gets nicer and there's a whole lot of sunshine in the forecast Nathan I'll send things back over to you all right thank you Jess thanks a funeral for the late NHL star Johnny G and his brother Matthew will be held today the funeral is being held in New Jersey the good Brothers Home State and will be streamed by both the Columbus Blue Jackets and Calgary Flames gujo played for both teams during his NHL career the brothers were struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver while riding their bicycles more than a week ago former Toronto Raptor's Allstar DeMar rosen is urging people to open up about their mental health in his new Memoir in his book titled above the noise the 35-year-old writes about growing up in poverty in California losing friends to gang violence and his struggles with depression D rozan who has been an outspoken advocate for mental health in the NBA says the aim of this book is to reach people who feel like they're alone the Rosen was selected ninth overall by the Ws in 2009 and spent nine Seasons with the franchise before being traded in 2018 the Blue Jays are set to begin his series with the New York Mets tonight to deep right field it's gone all the way in out the Jays wrapped up a series with the Atlanta Braves yesterday they were leading in the ninth inning but the Braves forced Extra Innings eventually going on to Win 4 to3 in the 11th first pitch tonight against the Mets is set for just after seven in Toronto still to come there was a new number one at the weekend box office we'll have more on the long awaited sequel to be juice when we [Music] return helium is everybody's favorite thing to put in a balloon but it's got a lot of important industrial uses as well from medicine to rocket science and more unfortunately reserves are running low but there's a massive new Reservoir in Minnesota that could help for more on this we're joined by CTV science and technology specialist Dan risken Dan we love what helium can do to our voice it's a hoot but but why is it so important we do we love it so much that I'm going to answer your first question with helium in my lungs yes helium is really important because it's needed for MRI devices it's needed for rockets and it's also really important because it makes your voice sound abs absolutely hilarious which is a critically important thing um you it's used in a lot of different devices but we are running out and so this new uh big motherload of helium that they found in Minnesota uh is a breakthrough and so uh normally they need the concentration of helium coming out of one of these things to be. 3% in order to be viable this one's more than 14% so they're very excited and everybody's celebrating so that's that's what you need to know about helium okay I think this is got to be a first in Canadian television live report with helium that is so I'm out now so we now it's going to be just just good old oxygen from here on well it's so cool that you had a prop I don't know if you have props for the next stories and that's probably one is enough um this one sounds pretty unconventional but doctors in the UK have just concluded a pilot study in which they prescribed time Outdoors which seems pretty cheap and easy was it effective yeah you know what this is a great great study out of the UK 8,000 people took part from Mostly from lower socioeconomic backgrounds um and the doctors were still prescribing the normal stuff they would prescribe for depression or for uh mental health problems things like therapy things like CBD uh different medicines but they also were prescribing people outdoor activities and it wasn't just go outside it was okay you you're prescribed to do this program it was a gardening program or a farming program or a hiking program or there were a bunch of these that were set up as part of this pilot study and it was hugely successful the people who partook in those studies or or who partook in those therapies uh had better mental health when they were finished they brought their mental health up to the average where most people are in terms of uh their happiness their anxiety their life satisfaction so it really does point to the fact that the Great Outdoors is this resource that medicine could be using to help you know it's just another tool that they could have at their disposal and the best part was it ended up being much cheaper than other kinds of treatments that are now available in the UK things like drugs or things like a one-on-one therapy session with a a therapist this was much less expensive and so it's definitely a good way forward for the UK and hopefully for Canada too I know we could all do it right now wow a good walk makes you feel so good when you're out in nature finally Dan I want to talk about this new study on regret that suggests that how you view your mistakes can make all the difference how so this is great uh you know we all have that one Reg that we just keeps coming up in our minds you're trying to go to sleep and you just keep remembering that stupid thing you said at that funeral that you never should have said or whatever your regret is and when you focus on that one thing it can prevent you from moving past it and it can become a barrier to doing stuff and taking risks in your life that could bring you more happiness and what researchers did was they used a gambling Paradigm where they had people do bets that they would regret where they would lose and and lose a lot of money um but some people were told focus on every round of gambling as though it's the only one that matters and some people were told look you're going to do 20 rounds of this gambling just look at the big picture you're going to lose some you're going to win some when you lose don't worry about that one think about the big picture and when they had that big picture mentality they ended up having way less stress and they ended up making smarter decisions gambling going forward and so the big take-home here is yeah you maybe said that one dumb thing at a funeral that you really regret that you shouldn't have said but you've been to other events where you didn't say something dumb so think about all of it as a portfolio and you've got some stocks that did well and you've got one stock that did really badly but if you just think about the big picture it won't be as overwhelming I love that and certainly no regrets in talking to you ctv's Science and Tech expert Making Science fun with the helium thank you so much Dan have a great day you too thanks a lot well a major musical comeback is being plagued by controversy Britain's competition Watchdog is probing Ticket Master ahead of oasis's upcoming reunion tour ctv's Andrew Johnson has those details it promises to be one of the biggest reunions in rock history it's the biggest comeback for me uh to see this band Live Again Oasis was one of the dominant British Acts of the 9s but split in 2009 after a string of public spats Between Brothers NL and Liam Gallagher news of their surprise reunion LED thousands of Oasis fans to wait hours in Virtual lineups to get their hands on tickets for next Summer's UK dates but many were shocked by Ticket Master prices much higher than advertised it was ridiculous my friend bought some for like 2 and a half Grand each she bought four of them fans expecting tickets in the $250 Canadian range were asked to pay more than 600 thanks to what's called Dynamic pricing artists want to take into consideration what tickets are going to be sold for on the secondary market so that if there is high demand in theory the goal is to raise the price of the tickets to match that artists will gain that money themselves rather than seeing it go to other people Britain's competition Watchdog is now getting involved launching an investigation into the way next week UBS Global wealth management says stocks still look attractive predicting that S&P 500 companies will increase their profits by 11% this year and 8% in 2025 meanwhile Chinese stocks have been struggling trading near a 5-year low investors are disappointed by a lack of corporate profits and economic recovery deflation and a possible cycle of falling prices is now seen as a risk with in business I'm Andrew Bell of B&M Bloomberg coming up a BC man took matters into his own hands after several book depositories in his communities were vandalized we'll have more on his efforts to create create little libraries when we come [Music] back after some little libraries in his community were impacted by vandalism a man in BC took matters into his own hands he dusted off his tools and created his own space for people to share books ctv's Adam sawatsky has the story Roger Barker was looking forward to exchanging a book at one of the little free libraries that had been erected around his neighborhood when he found it vandalized some person had thrown a burning book in it well then Roger discovered another nearby Book Exchange was damaged too glass all over the floor followed by a third little library that was destroyed all that was left of it was a stump Roger says he felt frustrated at first heartbroken and then unexpectedly inspired and I thought you know if I can do something here I will the thing was Roger had never fixed anything like this before got basically a drilled a few screwdrivers not only did he lack knowledge he had little space to attempt something so substantial my mind was muddled on how I'm going to achieve this but after getting some support from a couple friends and neighbors Roger went to work on his apartment patio fixing the first two libraries before spending 6 weeks constructing a third one from scratch I don't know I just did you know but more than build a simple box for books Roger figured out how to attach a shingle to a peaked roof and hang a hinged door with a glass front before embellishing it with inspiration if you be the food of Love play on a musical quote from Shakespeare that can be accompanied by a piano Roger placed in the little library's attic got a hle on the other side played a little tune there's also a sign that says where flowers bloom so does Hope and hope is my wife's middle name so she gives me hope but more than hope Roger's acts of creative kindness are inspiring a sense of certainty in these online community pages that like a Choose Your Own Adventure book we can decide to make a story that begins with destruction and with the creation of something even better anything is achievable Adam swatski CTV News Victoria M back here at home a little bit of that BC Vibe with the cloud covered today but the sun will return this week and so will the heat it will and we do have still a ton of Summer left right it officially begins just after the lunch hour on the 22nd we still got lots of time but today is one of those days it feels a little cool it's giving soup I want to eat soup today I don't know what it is about the weather but as we head in towards the rest of the week high pressure returns it warms things up and it will be quite beautiful we've seen some passing showers and this kind of continues this trend off and on throughout the day not a Soaker by any means but it's just kind of me it's one of those days where you're not quite sure if if it's cold if it's warm but just layer up accordingly right now now we're sitting at 19 no real change from the start of the show and it's still a little warm through Windsor at 22 now as we head throughout the rest of our day a lot of this bit of a cold front will push its way out we see clearing behind it and high pressure settles in really nicely for the week ahead so if you want to spend some time Outdoors before work after work on your lunch doesn't matter it to be fantastic as we head throughout the rest of the week so something to look forward to for your Tuesday through to Sunday yeah for sure thank you Jess and that is CTV News at noon remember you can get Toronto's breaking news all day long on CP24
