and today's starting pitcher Paul schemes what should we keep an eye on here well he's been a real quality starter for his club and coming into this one what stands out for me is that right-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 on the year it seems that they have a hard time picking up his release point and tracking the ball into the zone so we'll see how right-handers do against him in this one and now it's going to be Victor robless and a foul ball [Applause] kicks andand deals and that's outside and the count is one and [Applause] one Bunch attemp but that goes foul one two now fouls it back with two strikes here's a one-w and that just misses caught a break right there pretty good pitch on the outside corner still two and two after the foul ball and the righty de good job to fight that one off and the rander deals sharp grounder that's through for a base hit he saw a lot of pitches in that it bat and found a way to win the battle these hits today are so great with handling velocity they're seeing high speeds day after day and a nice job to turn that one around the matter now Jorge palano swing and a drive deep right field and it's off the foul pole for a home run he powers that one out of here is 12th of the season and they lead it it's two nothing he only needed one swing to square it up not wasting any time in that at bat boo aggressive and it paid [Applause] off off the bat it looked like it had plenty of distance but there was just no telling if it was going to stay fair I mean he really hook that thing down the right field line but good thing that big pole was there to let us know could have very easily just been a long strike if he headed out front any more than he did Randy a Ros arena in the box now no balls in a strike SK a 66 righty he features a four seam fast ball a splitter a slider a curb and he works in a change up sizes this one up makes the grab one down now Scott service line up for the Seattle Mariners they're dealing with a top level arm on the mount so this figures to be a tough matchup for them what's the key to the offense today singy oh boo I think when you got a guy that's this talented on the mound you got to find ways to disrupt his rhythm make him uncomfortable a little bit the guys that can handle the bat and perhaps you know bunt bunt for a base hit get him moving off the mound if you're in the box and he seems to be just in a flow step out mess up his timing somehow try to get in his head a little bit and then when does come in the zone you may only get one pitch you better not miss it next one misses and it's two and0 and singy as a team you need to make the most of the very few opportunities he's going to give you right absolutely and and you know if you don't get to guys like this a lot of times early once they really settle in it's going to be the later Innings that they hand that ball over to a relever if they do it all two runs across in the inning and we're just because you never know what could happen on any given day but with that said even if you fall behind early you've got a lot of confidence that this game will not be over until that final out Conor Joe back there and that can be a huge compliment really so if you're just kind of quietly doing your job staying consistent with your calls hitters pitchers managers even fans they're all going to appreciate you and drumman he's that kind of umpire nobody out runner at first pitch misses and it's two and two got him looking for the to couldn't pull the trigger on a fast ball at the knees well definitely a borderline pitch right there and he didn't look too convinced as he headed back to the Dugout know those are tough ones to let go as a hitter but with the human umpire calling balls and Strikes it's always going to be on you to protect yourself with two strikes here's Josh Roos count one and and a pitch out but nothing going on move to First and he's back in [Applause] safely and it ress up to him singled and scored his first time that one to Triple digits wow triple digits on the gun I know there are more pitchers that can reach that now than in the past but it's still impressive to watch [Applause] kzone leads off first with two down to the inning knocks that one away and we'll do it again also really good at bat what I like about this guy his Bat stays in the zone for a long time gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches battling here as he fouls it away [Music] two outs goes down looking for the strike out Frozen with the heater at the knees no runs on no hits no errors and one left on we go to the bottom of inning number two it's the Mariners two and the Pirates nothing bottom of the second and now the right fielder Ryan de [Applause] Cruz Cruz the W to kick the pitch swinging a foul straight back kicks and fires swinging a foul back that's out of play the healthy cut tough pitch at 98 but a really good pass at the ball and the O2 and that's downstairs and outside well that's kind of what you expect in an 02 count excellent job of the hitter to have the pl disciplined and lay off of that pitch next offering is down low he's trying to stay down in the zone but the hitter just will not Chase now back in a two two count he's going to have to go to something else to get him out two two now fights it off you'll see another two two on the way good eye right there really good take especially with two strikes that one 95 to finish him off Michael a Taylor the next pirate to hit that one at the knees for a strike the Mariners holding on to a two-run lead bottom half of inning number two just missed and that's the Inside Edge and it's two and one righty delivers way out run for strike two swing and a miss struck him out well that's the money maker right there there two strikes slider down and away from a same side thrower as the hitter that's just tough you're looking to protect with two strikes and very difficult to lay off and now up to the plate yasman grandal foul ball two out space is empty and there's a breaking ball that drops in there man this guy's got a great feel for his breaking ball [Music] today that just misses and a count one and two close for me partner to take that 02 fast ball but for whatever reasons he Let It Go by he's still in the atat I don't think he'll let the next one go that one the other way and that's a base hit and that keeps the inning going batting n a second Bas now it's the second baseman strike one pretty rare location right there right down the middle this guy Paints the edges not sure if you're going to see that pitch again as a hitter at the belt and fires and ball [Music] [Music] one wouldn't chase that time two one now oh that's out first pitch strike from the pitcher but then no Panic at all by The Hitter very patient showing good discipline now he's in the driver's seat with the 3-1 count the 3-1 swing get a foul straight back 3-2 two out run on first lot of movement in the infield hitters got to stay focused on the pitch fouled off again and it remains three and two the pitch look out and it hit he had two strikes on him and he hit him Isaiah Kinder ffo up to the plate he was a strike out victim his first time that's in there strike one looks like he's just sizing him up there really good pitch to hit but he took it all the way sometimes guys just want to set their timing later on in the game that may be a Pitch that he turns on oh he cches it but they get the out of first and that'll do it for the inning Pirates strand a couple they Trail it here two nothing all set for the start of the inning and the batter now PGE palanco schemes back to work that's strike and it's 0 and one well these Mariners showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one doing a good job of working the pitch count and they've been able to push a couple of runs across the score as well and he deals sh missed still relatively early but with a pair of runs already on the board the ripple effect of that high pitch count might set him up to do more damage later in this game swing and a miss and he got him looks like he's picked up right where he left off he came out of his mechanics there typically likes to shoot the ball the other way but that time little anxious now it's Randy a Rosara 0 for one with a fly out to Center and that's off the Inside Edge one and0 breaking ball through there for a strike Bas is empty one away we're here in the top half of inning number three next pitch is downstairs we got two balls one strike just missed [Applause] out towards left Center Reynolds On The Run makes a nice running catch two away down two outs SP is empty and now it's the cleanup hitter for the Mariners Cal Raleigh and he's already singled in this game popped up to the left into foul ground catcher tosses The Mask settles under it he's got it and that'll end the inning so they make short work of them there we head now to the home half of inning number number three it's the Mariners two and the Pirates nothing as we go to the last of the third Brian Reynolds here re the right-hander back to work he swings and misses at the first pitch one kick sandal gets a piece and it stays o and [Music] two and a pitch drilled to right way back there and that is gone [Applause] home run number 20 on the year it's 2-1 he absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer and you can see that's what he expects of himself at bat after at that he's that [Applause] confident a breaking ball on the inside part of the play requires a hitter to stay really squar with his mechanics if you fly open with the FL shoulder there's no way you keep that ball fair and outstanding job mechanically he deserves that Home Run next to hit Conor Joe pitch in for a strike going one just got to delete it you give up that lead off home run go back to work focus on this next batter looking to get the tying run on base and fouled off field two and a swinging a Miss down on strikes and that's the first out nice recovery after giving up the Homer I got to think that was the plan all the way he set him up with a high fast and then carry that curveball down low to get him swinging now especially with how effective pitchers work up in the zone these days that's a devastating combination B the next to hit takes [Applause] outside he strike the pitch holding on to a one-run lead here in the last half of the Third down the line on the move towards foul ground dive in makes the grab hitter's got a broken heart on that one it had base hit RI all over maybe extra bases great diving catch for the upset up next for the Pirates key Brian Hayes pitch misses there ball [Applause] [Music] one two down nobody on and another ball the two is in for a strike two outs in the air right side of the infield under it brings it in for the third out box draw a bit closer on this long ball and the home team down to run Major League Baseball is on the show back here in Pittsburgh as we go to the top of the fourth and now for Seattle Luke rley as he turns on the Rubber and with that good live arm delivers no that's down a little bit low pass ball for a strike and the count even at one Chris we were excited to watch him pitch this is a little more along the lines of what we were expecting performance-wise yeah Bo great pitchers like this you may get one opportunity in one inning to get to to get some runs up on the board and if you don't take it then you may see zeros the rest of the ball game the B so now Turner in on that right side he popped out his first time and a strike right through there that one a triple [Applause] digits Ry on at first nobody out right through there for a strike don't play situation here he's been working up in the zone typically you look for guys to get that ground ball see if he adjusts on this next pitch and him looking that's a strikeout well I think that's a case of overthinking right there we got three straight fasts looking in the 02 count just to pour it back so digging in Dominic pzone he was plunked in his first trip to the plate and that's too [Music] high check swing went around and a count one and one [Applause] and the pitch and a good eye [Music] there and a pitch nope that's inside Chris with that distraction and the Speedy guy at first he's in a favorable hit count well if nothing else I mean this is a great spot for a hitter to be in and it's Ball Four he missed down low he's making things difficult for himself right now there on the M but you know his confidence should still be high enough to get out of this but he's going to have to buckle down right here more in the box now as he leaves that one up high two on one [Applause] out the short stop takes the ball could be some action here on this next pitch couple Runners on probably a challenge pitch coming and the righty deals this one high in the air to left side Center under this one they got it for out number two the third number so first and second with two outs Josh Ro Hawks up next for the Mariners 0 for one he struck away now the center Michael and now the center fielder Michael a Taylor struck out swinging his first time Bast ball for a strike and I know you want to be patient as a hitter but you got to be ready to jump on the first thing straight and he got one right there but left the bat on his shoulder that one finds the zone and it's 0 and two well we call that Keyhole even though it's right there and looks pretty good if he doesn't love it he's not going to swing that early in the count the other way foul ball one down Bas is empty swings through it and that's a strike down now p c yasman grandal up to hit one for one with a single so far this one chopped in the ground but foul trying to close out a one-run lead and the home team trying to pull it out they're down to their final strike decisions decisions this guy's got five pitches to put hit her away I don't know what you're looking for here [Music] 02 the Pirates down to their final strike ground ball left side and that's just foul the line of the pitch and that's downed away a one run lead we're here in the bottom of the fourth comes up empty as he chases that one in the dirt and that'll do it as they complete the strike out to end it well a tight 2-1 ball game classic pitching and defense in this game a lot of good execution and neither team really beat themselves by way of mistakes but ultimately it came down to one
