Auston Trusty on life in Sheffield, goal vs. Wrexham, EFL expectations & USMNT hopes | Morning Footy

thrilled to welcome in one of the goal scorers. Auston trusty is here. Hello Austin, how are you doing? Good good. How are you? We're fantastic. Congratulations on the result and the goal yesterday. Take us through it. Yeah. Thank you. Yeah. Just taking take advantage of the opportunities. You know, we practiced a lot on set, on set pieces and doing your job and performing well with them and taking them serious. So, yeah, I had my opportunity. I was, I did a little juke and got got the block and took advantage of it, seems to I always get in situations where it's like a goal but not a goal. It's like just in the line. But I saw it go away. I saw that was well over the line. How much fun is it to play in in the Carabao Cup? It feels like it's just one of these, these storied competitions and the different divisions, the different levels. What's it like? It's a dream come true. You know, growing up in Philly, you know, we didn't we didn't really have something like this, you know, where all the leagues are. Everyone has a chance really to win the trophy and make it to the top. As long as you keep winning. So, you know, growing up watching football overseas, it was always a dream for me to come play in this league and in the country, but also to perform in this tournament too. So it's just surreal. Austin, I've got some trivia for you. Are you ready? Oh boy. Here we go. You scored eight goals in your club career. How many of them have been headers? One, two, three, four, 5 or 6, I think it's five. Yeah, five. Pretty good. Put the guy on the spot, which is my favorite one. That should be the question that is okay. Which one is your. Which one is your favorite, probably my first one in Philly, yeah. That that was sick. I was just so hyped. And, Harrison Duncan, who was my sixth at the time, like, jumped on my back and, like, ran with him all the way to half field to celebrate with my teammates. So that's my favorite. Love it. This last header though was your first with Sheffield United. I'm watching the video a couple of times, you didn't really get a chance to celebrate. You were more pointing down, trying to make sure that the ref saw you say it was a goal and hopefully that counted, if you could take it back. What celebration would you do? I know you're a Philly guy. Would you maybe step over somebody like I stepped over Tyronn Lue. What would you do. Oh well I mean there was no one there. It was just me I don't know I really have a celebration. I always just end up like screaming and saying something. You know after Birmingham I like slid on the ground a lot, but I don't know. I thought about it last night. I was like, dang, I really should have did something. But, you know, I was tying the game up. So it's a little bit different tying the game versus leading the game and scoring. So you kind of have to get back and play something, do a little celebration. But nothing, nothing crazy. All right. We got to think of something for you for when you score a go ahead goal. It is. Any ideas we got to think about I was going to say yeah you got to you got to consult the Philly. You know, next time I score I'll do it. You just gotta give me an idea, all right. Cool. We'll think of something. Oh, being with Sheffield, what parts of your game are you really looking to develop? I mean, going overseas and playing with the new team, playing with new personnel. It asks so many questions of your game and challenges you in different ways. Where are you really looking to grow and learn with this team? Everything. You know, my mindset ever since I was in the academy at Philly and even before that is to grind every single day and you're never perfect. You know nothing. Whatever I do is never going to be perfect, but I can get I can try my hardest to get there and work on every attribute I have. So it's not just one thing. It's, it's everything combined. And more. And outside of just playing, also your mindset, how you deal with situations, how you deal with stress and all the sorts of the game where, people don't necessarily see you know, so it's not just one thing, it's many things. It's many things all coming together at the same time. So I just, I just try to do my best and I can only control what I can control. Austin, you played in the EFL and Championship before, right, but what's the atmosphere like after being relegated from, from the Prem having defensive struggles in the season as a whole? Right. Is there that obsession at the club to get promoted again and what is that atmosphere like? You know last year last year was tough. You know the atmosphere was to stay stay promoting. You know there's a large amount of teams that when they go up, big percentage are going to go go back down. So that mindset last year was to stay stay promoted and show that we can play in this league, but ended up not working for us. We got we got relegated. But so the mindset still is to be back at the top and I think everyone in the organization, they don't want to be in the championship, they want to be playing and being in the best league in the world. So the atmosphere now, it's to get back to where we were and then when we get back to that stage to continue on. But we have to control what we can control now. And that's our day to day. And play these 46 games and cup games and, you know, achieve our achieve our goals. But the atmosphere is a lot better than it was last year. You know, we started off good this year. And, we've got to keep the momentum going. Obviously there's a lot of teams that are being touted as favorites. It seems like the majority of them are the teams that have dropped down. You're one of those teams. So I think people are looking to for a big year from you guys in particular, Chris Wilder, your manager, who I've seen so many interviews of him, just so passionate. He's Sheffield through and through. He's a different type of manager. He seems like a very gusto type of guy. Gets in your face, both positive and negative. How do you think he's changed your game or what is his expectations of you? I think just for myself. But also the team, the team in general is to perform. You know, there's no real excuses, you know, and also, you know, we're not going to get not the idea of getting bullied. We're not going to get outplayed. We're not going to get out run. It's just really it's a it's a no excuses environment. And at the end of the day that's kind of what you want because as a player, you know you can find excuses. Any little thing when things don't go your way and when things do go your way. So it's just he's created an environment where, you know, it's kind of it's just ruthless, really. It's ruthless. You have to perform, perform well. And that's that's the gist of it. And as a player, that's that's why you're here and you have to be ruthless, especially against teams that have Hulu documentaries and feels like they've got a target on their back that has hair and makeup before a game. Right. Awesome. We were talking about this in the first couple of segments of the show. What's it like going up against Wrexham that has all of this glamor and the lights and the cameras around them, I mean, I saw, so they on Monday was my birthday, so I went and saw Deadpool and I was I was in the movie. I was like, I'm about to play his, his team tomorrow, but I'll be honest, I don't really think about like, I mean, playing in the Prem, all these guys, all these teams are hyped up and have all the cameras and lights on them. So I just go out there and do my do my thing I didn't really think about, like, what's going on their side because everyone's got stuff going on. So not wrapped up to the hype of whatever anybody is doing. We're all we're all humans. We're all we're all the same. Yeah. Regardless of the glamor, the glamor, like, the hell was that? I was my old English pronunciation. He's in England. It was my English pronunciation. Okay. Yeah. Okay. This is Sir Nico Cantore. Austin. There was, there was some some Philly on Philly crime done yesterday because is it brotherly love? Rob McElhenney McElhenney. Yeah. Rob McElhenney was there. Did he did he give you any shtick after after the game. Was he there. Yes. Oh man I didn't I didn't see it. I would have I would have tried to say hi, but I don't know if he would want to talk to me after that, but no, it was it's the City of Brotherly love, you know. He knows. He knows what it's about. You guys keep it solid. Yeah. If he reaches out, just DM him back. Say I guess it ain't always sunny in Sheffield. You feel me? Doing. That's a good one, Austin, I want to ask about your your your aspirations for the US men's national team. And do you, do you see yourself as as being able to insert yourself into a regular conversation with the squad? Absolutely. You know, that's that's been my goal since I was younger. As a little kid. That's why kind of where I am, where I am. Because I was inspired, inspired by all these guys to be in the national team and perform for your country and be that player for your country and inspire millions of kids. You know, I think, I necessarily didn't get the opportunities under Greg and I'm, I'm itching for an opportunity to show these guys that I can play and I can be that person for the team. I just need the opportunity. And, you know, under BJ and under, Anthony Hudson, they gave me a shot and gave me my two caps. And hopefully I proved that in those games that I can I can show and I can I can play. Well, but hopefully with the future come, future to come, I can be that guy and I get my opportunities and I'll take full advantage of it. Yeah. So obviously Greg's not there anymore, but what were the conversations like with him for that expectation of either performance? What's needed from you to be able to be in that conversation and in consideration for the national team constantly? Nothing really. There was not really much communication. You know, I thought there would be more, but there there wasn't. But in my mind it was to get to the highest level and perform and perform and get as many games and get as many reps. You know, at the end of the day, I can only control what I can control and that's my day to day process and, advancing my career at club level and doing my thing. So that's really the gist of it. What do you think that you have to show this season in order to maybe to get that potential? Look at from the whoever they hire as the men's national team coach, I think just keep doing what I'm doing. You know, I defend well past well, great mindset. And, you know, just keep on advancing my attributes. Like I said before, my mindset is to get better and better every single day. If I can keep doing that stuff and getting better as a player every day, every day, it'll all work out. You know, at the end of the day, I can the best advice I've ever been given is to I can only control what I can control. So I do my part and let God take take care of the rest. Nice. So true. All right. We've got we've got a fun little nugget about you, Auston Trusty, that you picked up woodworking as a hobby during Covid. Okay. How did this start and what is your what's your your favorite piece that you've created? Are you guys I could have I could have asked my mom to take a picture, I don't have it here. I don't have it here with me, but. Yeah. So when I was younger, I used to be a Boy Scout, I was a Cub Scout. I was a Boy Scout. Yeah, I was, I loved being outside tying knots and, like, doing outdoorsy stuff and setting fires and roasting marshmallows and stuff like tha. So I got into woodworking with that there. And then during Covid, I was in Denver. I just moved. So I just moved to the rapids and, Covid hit and I was sitting there in my new apartment, and I was just like, I have no friends. I can't really see my teammates because there's it's Covid. I can't really do anything with them. And now I'm stuck in this apartment with nowhere to go and nothing to do. I'm like, all right, I need I need a hobby. I need to get out of this place. So I ended up looking at this place called, I made a workshop in Denver, and they let you go in and have their own slabs of Wood, and you can do whatever you want to help you out. So I ended up just making a bunch of pieces, for myself and just having fun. So I ended up making, like liquor and wine dispensers for Cowell and Kellyn Acosta, I made, like, epoxy river tables. I made some serving trays, wow. I made when I graduated college at Snhu. I made myself a plaque and then for my fiance, my girlfriend at the time that she graduated, at Drexel Armoire made her. I made her a plaque as well. Hers is really cool, but I can send you guys some pictures. This is amazing hobby. You're like a true renaissance man. You're going to get a Pinocchio next. I mean, you. That's good. I found having hobbies outside of football. It helps so much, you know, get your mind off things, you know, it grows, your mind grows, grows yourself as a person. Get. Get out of your comfort zone. I got a quick question for you. I want you to start bench sell. Oh, geez, Sheffield United gets promoted 70 Sixers win the NBA finals or the Philadelphia Eagles win another Super Bowl. Oh, man. All right I think I all right start start Sheffield get promoted of course bench bench Sixers. Win the finals and cut. Eagles win Super Bowl only because the Eagles just won previously I think the Sixers we need it. We desperately need it. So I know the Eagles have had their glory in the past. I want them to still have the glory. But you know we all need that. We all need to eat as well. Sixers might if you don't play in New York I'll just say that. Oh amazing. That's so mean, Alexis, Austin, thank you so much for taking t
