the following is a presentation of CBS Sports hi again everybody I'm padle bran welcome to the fall premiere of the CBS Sports show today it all began with boxing double header that's 8 fist flying not at the same time of course we' got the rematch between super middleweight Steve Collins and Chris Ubank Collins took the title from Eubank in March Eubank claimed Collins's hypnotist gave him an unfair Advantage one thing is sure the rematch was spellbinding also today live Simon Brown the former three-time world champion from Jamaica is on the comeback Trail and is it a bird is it a plane no it's Aaron Superman Davis who disguised as a mild mannered middleweight will fight a never- ending battle or 10 Rounds whichever comes first and if it's fall it must be college football and CBS is the new home of the National Championship today we'll have all the news scores and highlights for you along with our in studio guest folks the eye of the Hurricanes Butch Davis in his first year at Miami by way of the Dallas Cowboys and he's smiling we've got some other surprises in store so folks whoever you're watching today get set for the show Blast [Music] Off well there you have it another opening another show after traveling throughout the country this summer with barnstorming thopson Boise baky South Padre Island we are back in our New York Studios and glad to be here what a show we put together to Mark the occasion hard hitting in the ring and some hard hitting on the grid iron first up the number one team in the Country Florida State welcomed rather rudely North Carolina state 77- 17 the seal pumped up for their home opener in it show look at them go out there turnovers played a big part as NC State running back traine Steven fumbled that carry away coughs it up goes the other way Bobby Bowen wanted more and his quarterback Danny canel responded throwing this TD the second of his career high folks five TDS Andre Cooper Scoops it in running back War dun watch this he extends the n's first half lead to 28 points on a 40 yard dash to pay dirt and there he goes and the sems go on out to 77 the 17 final there no celebrating there fellas later on we'll chat with seol's head coach Bobby Bowen and the quarterback Danny canel this has been a ult week to say the least for Tom Osborne and defending national champion Nebraska Heisman Trophy candidate Lawrence Phillips and other players have been accused of assault and other criminal actions Diana olak of CBS News has been covering the situation and prior to kickoff she filed this report on fan reaction down there in Lincoln now all we've been seeing reading and hearing about the national champion Nebraska Corn Huskers is their shattered reputation players spending more time in court than on the field and with all the bad publicity surrounding these once clean cut cornfed PL players you might think the fans would take their business elsewhere think again Nebraska is a machine one person doesn't make a team they got guys to back them up even to fans who looked up to lawren Phillips Lawrence Phillips is my favorite player the star running back was not the only guy on the team go today and most in what will be a record 202nd sellout crowd every will be sellout are just glad their boys are back well it's first game of the year for number one number two it's just great to be back again wake up alive in the morning and come see them Huskers kick uh some butt which these fans fully expect them to do with or without their hero and despite their discouragement about the team's new reputation I think that uh a lot of the Husker fans are disappointed not only um in what he did but simply because he let down his teammates he let down the coaching staff and I would bet that a lot of Husker fans feel let down but Huskers don't fall hard happens and they keep coming back go big good team members would not talk to the media this week but the University's athletic director told us that once the ball is in play they won't be concentrating on anything else but he also said that today's game would be a test of the team's ability to stick together under tough scrutiny and would be more telling than any other game this season as to whether these players can hold on to their National Championship Diana ol CBS news Lincoln Nebraska and Diana will have more on the Nebraska story tonight on the CBS Evening News with Bob Scher as for the number two ranked Huskers on the field today against Arizona State 63-21 at halftime and the man who replaced him Clint Childs has said Son go on out there and make a statement and there he goes first play of the game 65 ydd Scamper Nebraska piled up 56 first half points he now has two touchdowns and Tommy Fraser has three as Nebraska rolls on this afternoon we'll have more scores and highlights later during our Northwest Airlines college football today well it had to happen the show is going interactive if you cyber fans out there would like to chat with Pat on the internet we'd love to hear from you why not cast your vote in our fan Poll for the top 25 college football teams or give us any other feedback you want you don't have to be a hacker to access us at sports cbs.com your comments and inquiries are now only a cursor away time out a sound the bell for the start of our CBS Sports show boxing double header last Saturday night in Cork Ireland Chris Eubank entered the ring attempting to regain the WBO super middleweight title he had lost to Steve Collins of Dublin dramatic entry there was a lot of controversy over Collins's using of a hypnotist before both BS let's pick up the action beginning in round seven Tim Ryan and Gil Clans the Ryan Express providing the [Music] call this is Kevin's Park in Cork Ireland the WBO super middleweight championship at stake 177,000 fans on hand and the former Champion Chris Eubank into the seventh round as fought a strangely listless fight Steve Collins has been the busy man as we've seen it right from the start here with the support of his countrymen here in Cork defending his title for the first time against the man he took it from last March Collins on the left Eubank now in the foreground Collins comes out quickly again as he has every round keeping the pressure on the former Champion referee is Ismael Fernandez from Puerto Rico hasn't had a lot to do is Collins has carried the fight Eubank been uh occasionally counter punching mainly uh doing what he's doing here just going into a shell yeah and one round is exactly the same as the other every round Collins are just the busier of the two throws two punches every time Eubank threws one so it's difficult to even score one round for Eubank at least on my scorecard shooting up that jab that's about the only thing Eubank has done with any effect and it certainly hasn't been damaging at all he you Bank put three punches together for the first time in the fight not that they landed but at least he put them together Collins occasionally wild and has been in earlier rounds but he just still busy that he still has landed with effect he just backed up Eubank there with that combination and Eubank did land a couple of good snapping left Jabs in that Exchange Collins does not give Eubank any time to rest Eubank seems intent on doing as much resting as he can here it is again Eubank has had two fights since he lost the title last March to Collins two easy first round Kos Collins has not fought since March when won the crown right to the Head left to the body from Collins there's a right underneath from Eubank about his best punch of the fight so far under a minute to go in the seven no followup by Eubank however no love loss between these two combatants lot a ranker before the first fight and between the two fights winning a unanimous decision both Fighters scored knockdowns in that fight now Collins backing up Eubank who Just Smiles at him Collins knocked down on the 10th round of the first fight won a close unanimous decision blank got a flash knock down another some blood from the corner of the right eye of Steve Collins Steve Collins suffered a cut there late in round number seven at the corner of his right eye let's see whether that gets Eubank going he's turned in a very listless performance to this point Collins comes out quickly as he has it every round Collins is fighting like he's behind in the scorecards this is schedule for 12 Collins in his first defense of his crown one thing he's not worried about that eye Tim he's allowing caution to go to the wind just throwing the punches Eubank a little more active here in the early going of round number eight Collins keeps up the pressure short right hand landed little more blood from that cut now at the right eye of Collins Eubank jabbing more persistently here than he has earlier in the fight well he's got a little bit of a Target to aim at now he just looks a little more live than he has to this point but Collins continues to keep throwing punches coming forward Collins a somewhat ponderous kind of attacker you can see his punches coming but he just keeps them coming well he certainly doesn't look pretty Tim as we had mentioned before but his determination and conditioning allows him to do a lot of good things Steve Collins 29 wins only three losses all the tough guys Mike mallum for the WBA title Reggie Johnson for the same crown simu cambay for the European title former world champion himself cambay well Eubank seemed to try to seize the initiative with that cut late in the seventh round but Collins just keeps up the pressure he's Relentless cutter no cut that cut is leading profusely now though Tim they better do a good job on it in the corner under a minute to go on the eight effective counter punching underneath from Eubank in that exchange but doesn't back up Collins at all Collins jabbing backs up Eubank Collins punches is starting to slow up a little bit and starting to get a little [Music] tired there's a right hand from Collins at landed lot of blood from that cut in the corner of the right eye of Collins final seconds of round number eight in Cork Ireland working on the cut in the corner of Steve Collins and the boxing inspectors come up to take a look at it Collins who's had his way through most of this fight it's a pretty severe gash above the right eye it appeared to come from a of heads late in round number seven that's up to the referee to indicate that at the time but again the cut is a severe cut but it's not in the eye socket so it's not really a dangerous cut except that it should bother Collins because the blood can flow into his eye Collins again as he has every round comes out storming just too busy for you [Music] Bank and again Eubank goes back to his defensive shell hands up not throwing punches Cally one at a time Eubank threw like 15 punches then before Eubank decided to throw one punch back and even if all of them don't land they certainly look good to the judges Collins at age 31 the older of the two Eubank is 29 Collins at throwing caution to the winds does not seem to be bothered At All by that cut Cly in it any differently than he did earlier before the cut Eubank trying to tag it Bell short now Collins gets his arm around the head of Eubank and there's Collins with a three-punch combination backing up Eubank maybe a little bit of trouble you stopped counting at three Tim I counted up to nine in the ninth round colins continues to be in apparent control of this fight I just can't imagine what you bank is thinking of or what his corner is thinking of somebody should tell him that he's way behind in the fight that he's got to have to wake up again and start to move inside and try to throw hard punches landed one left hook and missed everything else in the last Exchange col just keeps coming forward again Bank does not count when Collins Clos those flowes once again backing up Eubank Collins does not look pretty but he does get the job done under the 302 Mark in round nine scheduled for 12 WBO super middleweight Championship from Cork Ireland 177,000 fans here cheering for Steve Collins and there's Collins again pounding that canvas saying let's get going here BL bank has not been much of a willing participant now going back into the action in round number nine Steve Collins an example of the kind of pressure he's had on the entire fight never stops throwing punches Tim that seems to be the answer to handle Chris Eubank just can't stand his pressure and the can't stand fighting a busy fighter like Steve cin now EU Bank comes out with some light throwing some punches Collins is right there punching back we're in the 10th round Collins Corner has done a good job with that cut over his right eye not proven to be a problem for him fite some occasional blood from it Vision has not been impaired holding up here in the 10 well this is a different Eubank that came out to start the 10th round but cin stayed right with him put him back in his place but they must be telling Eubank in his Corner that he needs a knockout to win this fight Eubank continues to do a lot of posing and not a lot of punching Collins continues to look like he'd like more of a Fray than he's getting from the former champion and he beat to win this title last March as AED with his balances and as wide open as he was throwing those punches he was the guy that landed the punch and Eubank was not able to count them when he misses with that right hand Collins he's hanging right out there there it is again waiting to get nailed but Eubank just does not have the reflexes to throw the punch back even when Eubank does score the occasional counter Collins is right there to throw two or three punch combination takes the play right back away from him does not allow Eubank to take charge at any time in any round as far as I'm concerned Collins backing him up again and now tied up by Eubank the ref three separates them under a minute in round 10 there was a good uppercut by Eubank he scored two or three of those in the fight but they have failed to bother Collins now again some more of the posing from Eubank makes no sense the way we see this fights completely in control that's what happens a lot of times when Fighters get spoiled to Temp wank has fought a lot of inferior opposition and he expects to just win when he getes in here he forgets that he has to fight this is [Music] CBS that was Ronnie Davis in the Eubank Corner exhorting his fighter Davis must that Eubank is way behind here as they open the 11th round scheduled for 12 Collins on the left Eubank on the right and goal Eubank showed some life in the last round Tim at the beginning of the round and he started out the same way this round because again the corner man has after him to really get going but it lasts for about 30 seconds and he doesn't overwhelm Collins and then Collins just goes about his business outworking Eubank all the time WBO super middleweight title at stake here at Kevin's Park in Cork Ireland 177,000 Irish fans chanting for Steve Collins lot of anticipation in this fight the date was changed once or twice a lot of wrangling between the promoters the boxers trashing each other in the media there's a good right hand by Eubank that's his best punch of the fight that was the kind of punch that can put a guy down especially when you're tired in a lot of R but uh Collins didn't even Shake little blood from The Cut Above the corner of the right eye of Collins not much they done a good job in the corner well usually it takes like a round for the cut stuff to take hold and he's had a few rounds to work on that cut so it shouldn't really give him too much problem problem continues with his pressure scoring there to a wide open Eubank Collins has set a tremendous pace and carried it through there's a right hand by Eubank and scores two more inside finally some effective counter punching by Eubank and that was the first time that Collins looked like he wanted to take a rest and grabbed the hold of Eubank and started walking around with him there he's doing it again now they're going to stop it here to have a look at the cut no it isn't it's not the cut it's loose piece of tape loose piece of tape on the glove of Steve Collins and while I was while I was cutting that tape off the corner man went up and started to give Collins advice which is a no no but uh there they are they're all up there you see Ismael Fernandez the referee trying to stop that but unable to do so and they're ready to resume here in the 11 Collins is showing some sign of fatigue here he started this round with the same temper shown through the first 10 Rounds I can't believe the attitude of a though he's fighting like he's way ahead in the fight look at Collins even though the punches are even more slow he's still throwing them Eubank again a combination here finding some holes now and throwing more punches could well have done this earlier in the fight to some success Collins missing Eubank failing to make him pay [Applause] down right throw them punches hard he's going to lose the fight you got to knock him out I'm I know what he is coming all night I know he's been coming all night you come at all go forward and bang him out right through the got to stop him interesting dialogue between Ronnie Davis the trainer Chris Eubank and his fighter you heard Davis tell him you've got to knock him out to win and you heard Eubank say he's been coming all night as though he was surprised at the tempo set by Steve Collins he should have recognized that in the early rounds the final round here for the WBO super middleweight title Steve Collins defending against Chris Eubank from whom he took this Crown in March of this year so his own trainer telling him that he needs a knockout to win let's see whether he can pull it off in the final round I think he should have told him that about the seventh to eighth round Tim inad instead of waiting last round well he may well have done so and we didn't hear it but nonetheless he's at least being a realist here let's see if Eubank is let's see if the judges are right that's always the case but Eubank needs a knockout on our cards and in the eyes of his trainer and there he's standing still after Collins had held him somewhat as though the referee was going to prevent that defend yourself at all times Collins missed opportunity to deck Eubank now Eubank fighting with a little more Fury here finally he goes down but again I believe that'll be an off-balance push not a knockdown and yes Isel Fernandez the referee says no knockdown well I think it was off balance and a punch him it wasn't really a push very questionable it could have been a knockdown minute and a half to go in the fight Bank coming alive but again look at Collins saying he seems to like it this way banging his gloves together he's been trying to get this fight into this Tempo through out he's wide open again Collins but gets away with it throwing no respect for Eubank again cin fights like he's behind in the fight which is the right thing to do with Eubank you heard Eubank say his say to his Corner he's coming all night he can't hand pressure under a minute to go in the fight the crowd sensing victory for their mans strikes back into s Collins toet to toe here 35 seconds left a good shot from Eubank that straightened up Collins and cause Collins to hold for a second a brief second under the 32 Mark there's a fight of Cs got everything out of himself Tim he's tired now but he's got everything out of himself in this fight Eubank looks like he's run out of gas here no punching in these final seconds greef flurry and that's it the Collins Corner looks happy awaiting the decision and Steve Collins retained his title on a split decision considering the fight you and I just saw it's amazing how one judge could score the fight in favor of Eubank and our CBS Sports show boxing double header will continue shortly with live action from Atlantic City a middleweight Clash featuring former Champs Simon Brown and Aaron Superman Davis for more let's check in with Tim Ryan well thank you Pat in Atlantic City New Jersey where tonight on the boardwalk the new Miss America will be crowned this afternoon here at the trop outstanding boxers of the 1980s a three-time world champion Aaron Davis a former WBA welterweight champion both of these Fighters know the meaning of this event this is a very important fight I mean like you said it's a must win situation here uh I approach this fight that I can't lose this fight I got to win when it's St to put the pressure on I'm put the pressure on when it's time to box I'm going to box instead just trying to fight fight all the time when it's time to take a side step or take a angle step I'm going to do it a tantalizing matchup between two outstanding professionals it's coming up in less than 30 minutes time on the CBS Sports show Brown and Davis back to you Pat all right Tim that fight is coming up shortly but next we'll have the premere of the Northwest Airlines Barnett of the number 25 Northwestern Wildcats that's all next as the show rolls on after a message and a word from your very own local station college football today on the show is sponsored by Northwest airlin some people just know how to fly and welcome to the debut of the Northwest Airlines college football today here on the CBS Sports show glad you're with us on the Saturday afternoon we alliance's number three and number five teams then on January 2nd will all be in Temple Arizona where the Toto Fiesta Bowl will match number one and number two with the national title to be decided on the field folks if you think people aren't focused on this take you inside the Texas A&M locker room where a photo of the tosos Fiesta Bowl is the first thing the Aggies see when they enter to suit up and we're delighted to be joined today by a coach whose team plays it home games in the Orange Bowl and who hopes to be in the bowl Alliance picture it's Butch Davis he's in his first year at the Helm of the Hurricanes nice to see you thank you P to day well you're one in one you get beat by UCLA you come back you got a young team though right we really do Pat we've got 16 brand new starters uh we've only got six seniors on our entire football team so uh uh it's a learning experience for us I think we're getting better we're making some progress I think you're going to see our football team get better as a year goes along couple of negatives uh associated with the team right now first the Ray Lewis situation and investigation underway way over an altercation they had with a former girlfriend yeah exactly it's a it's an unfortunate and a very sensitive uh issue right now particularly with in lot of the things that have happened around the country uh Ray did an excellent job in trying to get the thing resolved and I think that it's going to end up very positive you think you'll play this season absolutely all right what about the probation I this was before your time too we'll get the negatives out of the way here but you're glad you came huh um but what about the pration situation will that come down this year coach we're we're in hopes that it will uh our part of the investig ation pad has been completely finished we've got all of our information turned into the NCAA we're hoping to get an opportunity to get before the infractions committee sometime in October November and hopefully we'll get a resolution sometime hopefully before the start of recruiting it it' be nice to get that out of the way right whatever it is how bad do you think it'll be or any way of knowing it it's very tough to say you can compare our situation to other uh schools that have had probation over the last couple of years uh optimistically we'd like to think that it's not going to be as serious as some of those but uh until the end CAA actually rules you don't know we've been watching games all afternoon here folks and I got to be honest with you we've seen some celebrations here you got pegged for a celebration against uh UCLA was it UCLA or uh actually was in the Florida A&M game uh we scored a touchdown uh on a punt return and and the player took a helmet off about five yards from the sidelines at the end of the deal and uh this is the orange ball this last year that's a different team though like right absolutely what have you told them about celebrations they call it the Miami rule I don't know if that's fair to you but I don't think it's fair I think I don't think think that you'd make a rule just for one team pad I think basically what they're trying to do is they're trying to create a tremendous amount of sportsmanship uh uh send a message to players uh you know but it is it's one of those things you have to walk a very fine line and and hope that there's a lot of consistency between officiating across the country right coach let's fire up the scoreboard you you'll like it it's very easy to coach teams from here number one Florida State all over North Carolina state today the final was 77 the 17 let's uh fire them up now the seols came out on fire as the home opener against NC State Co be Williams crashes in that's what you got to do from three yards out right absolutely he's a big 270lb fullback that really can punish you at the goal line work done cruises untouched now and into the End Zone from 16 yards out and boy Florida state just looks sharp on all counts today very much so Danny canel is one of the hot quarterbacks in the in the country and doing a great job you love it when your quarterback's in this kind of a Zone don't you oh absolutely had five TDS today uh you know he's really throwing the ball with a lot of confidence all right 77 17 was the final there a new school record for FSU and after the game we had a chance to talk with Victorious head coach Bobby Bowen and we asked him about running up the score for the second straight week well we we really tried not to embarrass him you know if you just take the football and lay down on the ground I don't think anybody any coach in the world would accept that so we ran up the middle a lot there at the last they they made a couple of fumbles there the last possessions that I thought let it run it up Danny you had a big day uh 310 yards five touchdowns uh what was going on with you today had it all happening yeah I mean I just felt really good out there early on we got things clicking early and I really let everybody work around me uh receivers did such a great job catching the ball and uh the offensive line did an outstanding job I really feel like our offense when we get things going uh the only people are going to stop us is ourselves I think you guys scared Butch Davis here got to watch a little bit of the game here uh coach Butch has got a question yeah Bobby congratulations uh I was going to ask you Bobby how did uh how significant were the turnovers early in the game that uh that your defense created well that was very important because uh we wasn't doing anything other than that I mean it really scared me the way they took the football and just moved it up and down the field the first half thank goodness those uh uh turnovers set us up a couple of cheap touchdowns and really got us out front but I I I hope I hope our defense begin to find themselves there in the third quarter what stands in the way now for a national championship run I think we're the only ones that are going to stop us as ourselves and the defense is really starting to come along great and they're doing a great job giving us great field position so if we can keep playing as a team and keep improving every game we should be in a great position course you got a tough game against Miami on October 7th you looking forward to that one yet well that's that's when you're going to find out what you got you know when you're playing somebody and you're heavily favored and you're a dominant team and then there's a breaking point then it's you know you get all the points you want but when you play Miami and and and people like that you don't get breaking points can we stir things up here coach it's a little too early for us to get anything stirred up we've got Virginia Tech next week well that's right you got to take them one at a time it's hard not to look ahead to those big games though Florida state with a big win today 77 to 17 was the final there Nebraska at Arizona State 63-21 they're in the third quarter and the defending national champions uh they're riding a 26 game regular season win streak there and Coach they look great on the ground end in the air yeah that's typical Nebraska boy they can really run up the score they've got great athletes Tommy Fraser has four touchdowns today and they just didn't miss a beat all day long after that controversial week they had oh I know and you know their ground game can really chew up an opponent they can they can put the ball in the end zone from anywhere on the field Clint Childs ran at 65 yards in the first play of the game and Nebraska is leading 63 to 21 they in the third quarter Texas A&M and Tulsa 52 to9 is the final there a big day for mroy had 23 carries 116 yards a 28 straight win at Kyle Field quarterback Cory Pig gets his Heisman hopeful Leland mroy this guy's good isn't he he really is I know RC slen thinks he's the best running back in the country and one of the leading candidates for the Heisman Trophy all right and so Texas A&M rolls on there and we'll have uh one more play here as a high five down there that guy is a a legitimate Heisman candidate there 529 was the final there we'll have more highlights and more scores the coach and I right here from our New York Cate Studios right after this stay with us [Music]
