welcome to Huntington Bank Stadium home of the Minnesota Golden Gophers as we get set for what ought to be a terrific battle there's just something about the night cap after a day of wall toall football it just seems this is when chaos ensues as we'll see a squad from the AC the North Carolina Tar Heels taking on a team from the Big 10 the golden Goldberg for EA Sports college football I'm reys Davis David poock and Jesse Palmer with me guys it's time to get it going and the Golden Gophers will put total Le and we get started here he comes from inside his own five and he did a good job bobbing and weaving and finding a little bit of Running Room on that return the tar Hills offense will get the first crack at it here and here he comes a man who epitomizes the phrase the tight end's always open David and yes he is Reese and it's so cool the tight end position now has evolved so much you can move him all over the field and you can really highlight a guy of his ability too big for safeties to cover and too fast for Line open Runway ahead and they'll do more than move the chains they'll move that thing more than 30 yard down the field before he's finally stopped I know it's early in the game but defensively after that play you know you have to tackle the catch when this guy gets the ball in his hands he is so dangerous after the fact so it's okay for him to make catches just got to get him to the ground quickly and the tar Hills come to the line in the hurry up he's going to pass and the quarterback runs out of time and down he goes at the 38 just a great job defensively making him go through his progressions and he really didn't have time to do it and that's exactly what you do in zone coverage you drop in your spots you read the quarterback's eyes make sure you take away that quick and a great job rushing the passer and getting the sack really need to find a productive play this time on second and Long Johnson wants to throw it he is lucky to get that one back and the last thing you want is to turn it over on your opening drive and that's why these guys play defense if that were an offensive player receiver that would have easily catch come on man you got to catch that and make that a pick I'm not positive but that first down marker might be in the next County on Third and long no secret what he needs here and the heat gets home they knock him down back at the 45 yeah in the defensive line you know third and long situations I'm rushing the quarterback you bringing the nickel a little bit more speed on the field and the defensive line gets home and gets the down the Tar Heels will punt this one away first punt of the day and he'd love to lock him up close to their goal line excellent job on the punt bounces Out of Bounds at the five and they'll have 95 y to go in front of them so Minnesota's offense has its first opportunity of the day one way to mitigate the explosive capabilities he has on the outside is be physical with him and this dude will do that he will do that and you don't see a lot of offenses take the top off this D because of this guy roaming around in the middle of the field he is a true center fielder so this receiver is going to have to make plays but this just such a great job of getting guys on the ground a lot of people are in position but he makes play so him versus a dynamic wide receiver on the outside will be a great matchup stuffed on first down it's second and 10 they'll go right back to the Run gets that thing away from the goal post he's got five out to the 10 yd line and as an offense having success on a run play like that early in the game just opens up all the possibilities of your playbook moving forward play action running the ball throwing the ball screens anything is at your disposal at this point back to throw it's brosmer safe completion on the screen and they knock him down but he got past the line to gain I like the running back there on the route with patience he showed really setting it up got to the defender he was able to put his foot in the ground get some separation catch it and turn up field for the first the Golden Gophers come to the line with a fresh set of downs the give to the tail back didn't find a lot of room let's give him two out to the 20 and those physical runs take a toll it might not be a big game now but down the road third fourth quarter late in the ball games they tend to turn into bigger runs picked up two yard on that last one they need eight on second down he's looking to throw fires and picked off bringing it back touchdown North Carolina how about that D coming up with a play like that this D gave them exactly what they needed not only with a stop but with a touchdown yeah and finding ways to impact the game early in the game just make impact plays right the defense wants to create sacks create turnovers great job creating the turnover and getting points off of lining up for the Pat and the P makes it seven nothing they're about to kick it away and the defense probably can't wait to get back out there after the pick six looking for an alley from inside his own 10 he was hoping for something a little more Dynamic but they get him on the ground at the 20 Minnesota has it back in the Gopher offense is headed onto the field the short hands it's Jackson and he'll step out of bounds after a very productive play the quick passing game does several things one it doesn't let the pass rush get you those great defensive linemen the ball's coming out so fast they can't get there and then what else it gets me ahead of the sticks I don't have to worry about getting long in predictable situations the playaction fake and they wrap him up but not before he's got enough for the first down I just love quarterbacks that aren't greedy and that aren't always trying to throw the Home Run ball right second down you're in your own end of the field the guy you want to throw to is not open just find the back he'll go do something positive with it this guy is a weapon and you got to find him in the passing game the give from the gun just will his way for a couple out to the 35 and the defense doing a great job committing to the run when you commit to the run like this obviously you can give up some plays in the passing game but you got to stop the run first after picking up a couple it's second and eight back to the ground with the running back he is going nowhere stop at the line of scrimmage how about the defender being a heat seeking missile he was on radar lock he found the football and flew down with some bad intentions they line up with some serious work to do if they want to convert this one looking for a man it's brosmer finds his back in the middle and he's not going to get there the defense Stands Tall and makes the stop he just didn't have a chance to get loose and make his way to that first down marker I think fans get upset sometimes like run your route pass the sticks so we get the first down but nice job by the defense understanding where the sticks were and forcing the fourth down fourth down and the punt team sends it the other way makes a nice grab at the 25 and he's going to get it up to about the 29 yd line before he's brought down North Carolina has it back in the feels so pleased to send the offense back out they'll have another opportunity to extend this lead after punting last time David and it's important to put that punt behind you it's it's over let it go get back to what you were doing that built this lead P yeah and defense obviously they won a few Downs uh that last drive so we got to put them on their heels here maybe mix up a few Personnel groupings and try to show them some pictures they haven't seen yet it's first and 10 for this defense from the [Applause] 42 from the gun they'll try to impose their running game they finally make the stop with the big run is plenty to move those sticks for the first down and here we go if you're an offense you got to get that ground gain going so you can have some balance and then you give it to your quarterback Palmer and let him make some plays down the field later on yeah exactly and know coming into this game this knew they were going to have to some way somehow at least establish the semblance of a running game for exactly what you just said you got to be able to use playaction pass later in this game to get some explosive plays down the field and it's a play like that that we just saw which can help them get that on now on second down after the short completion going to run it it's Hampton on the move at the 30 and he's running in the open and he ran away from the defense to take it in touchdown UNC and to have a rushing touchdown of that type of yardage you've got to be able to make something Miss it's one thing to get into the second level but can you make that last Defender Miss and you saw it on that play once he was in the clear with his speed he was gone on to attempt the try and the extra point pushes the lead to 14 quick work on that scoring drive just four plays face and that was a centilating way to finish that one a 44 yd touchdown run the kickoff team out there set to booted away he'll bring it out from inside his own 10 he was hoping for something a little more Dynamic that they get him on the ground at the 20 the Minnesota offense is headed back onto the field coming out on first down with the play fake to say this has been a slow start a bit of an understatement and they really need to get it going here Jesse that's right the opponent they're firing on all cylinders right out of the gate offensively for this unit they've been slow and struggling they need an explosive play to wake themselves up yeah and it's just the first quarter so it's not the end of the world you've seen slow starts but you got to continue to pick and pick and pick until you find that play or or that scheme that you can use against this defense they've got it first and 10 at the 50 out of the shotgun they go to the ground now that's what you're trying to do as a defense limit those damage when they run the football get them on the ground short gains to set your defense for positive situations down the road didn't get much on first down it's second and nine motion from the offense from the gun running back on the move got the first down and more open space at the 25 defense makes a stop but the chains move and it's first and goal from the e and sometimes you go man what a play by that guy he just he carried people or he broke tackles or his speed and that time I'm like Palmer where is the defense I think it's too many guys being selfish today but I think it's guys getting out of their Gap everyone's trying to be a me guy a hero get the stat maybe get the SA up field but you've got to play Team defense 11 guys doing their job they did not get it done there and that big Gainer on the last one has him ready to go from inside the 10 he'll do it himself he's got it down to the one yd line right on the doorstep of P how easy was that I mean when you got a quarterback that canun designed runs like this and and get you five plus yards just and make it look that easy it makes it really hard for the defenses to stop looking for just one more yard it's second and goal been showing them the run now they'll throw it pulls it in in the end zone touchdown golden goer Big Time touchdown there to get some much needed momentum you got to find something right who you going to to go to to make that big play to get you back into you're not back in it yet it's not it's not tied you're not there yet but you're starting to inch back into it and get some momentum going getting set for the point after and after the extra point they've cut the lead in half down 147 the officials offer the deal and the coach accepts it they will take the penalty the kickoff team on the field and he ought to just boom this thing through the end zone with that extra 15 yards on the penalty not going to get a return here they'll bring it out to the 25 a kickoff sails through the back of the end [Applause] zone they'll run it out of the shotgun Works ahead for a couple they'll stop him at the 27 that's a really good job by the defense wrapping them up get them on the ground take away that run game make them onedimensional put him in passing situations really good job by the defense picked up two yards on that last one they need eight on second down now going to run it it's Hampton hard running there he's brought down but not before they pick up the big first down this running back loves running into the teeth of the defense in between the tackles he keeps a low pad level and he's got some [Applause] speed defense showing plenty of pre-nap movement of their own and the Tar Heels headed quickly to the line the back goes in motion Johnson looking to throw wide open downfield and they'll finally bring him down after he rips off a huge play last couple of plays the offense seems to be just one step ahead David yeah and I'm going to have to do something to disrupt the timing the Rhythm I got to do something that they are not expecting because right now they got the run and they got the pass working so this defense have to find new to kind of confuse this offense comes out throwing on first down did he find a hole in the defense touchdown T heel and once he found daylight it was ktie Bar the Door baby my man get him the ball he will do the rest catches the football Walks Into The End Zone feed that man The Rock ready to try the point after and the extra point pushes the lead to 14 quick work on that scoring drive just four plays and they get it into the End Zone on a 36 yd touchdown pass they're lining up to boot it away on the move from inside is five he was hoping for something a little more Dynamic but they get him on the ground at the 20 Minnesota has it back and the Gopher offense is headed onto the field they'll run the RPO and throw it right they make the stop right there good pick up it's still short of the first down great job by the quarterback there he saw the safety bite on the Run fake so as the safety comes running downhill he now knows he has the slant throw to his receiver on the outside and here comes the offense on second down they'll move the running back to try to force the defense to adjust grabbed behind the line it's Taylor there to make the stop but he is a weapon out of the back field in the short passing game and they've got a first down running backs just have to be a weapon in the passing game even for little dump offs and check Downs yeah find your matchups I mean you think about running back versus a linebacker we like that matchup in space and so find ways to get the football to your running back in space where you can break tackles and make things happen because they're just so they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one everybody talks about DBS they talk about dropping in coverage and not being physical that DB begs to differ great tackle coming up playing physical like a linebacker lost one on that last one it's second and 11 off the play fake a strike downfield a huge play and they get it all the way to the 45 yd line sometimes your tight end's a safety valve and sometimes he's your goto receiver and the offense knew right away it was the primary target it was where he was going with the football because you know you get a little bit of suck up from those linebackers with the play action and you feed the big fella looking down field it's brosmer he looks that one in nicely will we knew coming into this game this offense was going to try and get this receiver involved and get him involved early so here they are just finding an easy completion it's not a touchdown but they just want to get this guy lathered up and get him into a r this offense has a second down play movement here from the tight end give to the running back he's drop behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three it's amazing how play by defensive end in the back field can really swing the momentum not only of a series but of a game sometimes all you're trying to do is create negative plays to get them behind the sticks a little bit to get those sacks to get those tackles for a losses you see so much stunting in college football up front with the defensive line because you know once you get one of those plays you got the offense right where you want and the defense able to drag him down but not before they'll recycle that down marker and had they not picked up that first down it would have been decision time for the head coach right you're kind of in no man's land on the fridge are you trying along field goal are you going for it on fourth down but because of the execution there and the nice throw let's keep this drive going let's see if we can get six leaves it with the running back and he is just engulfed at the line by this giant defensive tackle that's a really good stop by the defense Jesse they need a few more you've given up a bunch of yards on this drive and a bunch of plays but all that matters is keeping them off the score yeah it's that bend don't break mentality you're seeing right now and this is the point where this defense has just got to lock in he's looking for an open man on second down what a snag by the defense trying to take it back at the 30 he's at the 10 touchdown North Carolina a great return for the touchdown any return for a touchdown is a great one to a defense what about the speed from that defender on the return he's showing you Reese like listen it's not just wide receivers that can do that I can take this thing to the house I got some moves watch this unbelievable job flipping the field offense about to score defense makes the huge plays and gets points out of it lining up to attack one more onto that lead and they knock through the extra point and they're up 28 to7 they'll kick it off and send that defense right back out there to try to score again after the pick six and he takes this from inside and the ball is loose on the return almost a disaster on that return they jump on it and they'll maintain possession that that's a breathing a sigh of relief for sure kick returner tries to take it out puts it on the ground but how about the offense getting back on it turning a what could have been a really bad play into thank goodness I got the ball again so you get stuffed on first down and now you have the offensive coordinator thinking a little bit yeah we're probably going to have to throw it now on this second play but what are we going to see defensively now that they know we're throwing might they Blitz us do I have to leave more guys into block there's a real cat and mouse game going on right now between these two coaching STS got his man he almost picked up the first down on that one but he'll be just a little bit short let's see what they do on third down guys we've reached the end of the period and North Carolina's on top they wanted to strike first and strike hard and they've been able to do that here in the first quarter as we take a look at the stats now the challenge here they've taken a punch but they can't let it get out of hand as we start the second motion by the back forces the defense to adjust going to take a shot at this DB makes a catch on the left hit the afterburners kid touchdown Minnesota and once he found open space the band might as well start playing it's a much needed life from this offense as they Tred to cut away at this lead no doubt needed something to go right you're down you got to make plays you got to get your team back in it great start keep chipping away they'll try to attack one more on their score and with the extra point they Trail by two touchdowns 2814 quick strike offense on that three playay scoring drive and they finish with a huge play in the passing game covering 75 yards to house [Applause] and they thought about a return Then thought better of it they'll bring it out to the 25 the North Carolina offense returns to the field Johnson wants to throw it fires to the middle he's got an open man and the explosive play and they're on the move all the way to the 44 That's What's So Scary About This offense they've got guys in the perimeter that can change the game in one single play and you saw it right there too much speed on the perimeter to create that explosive play the tar are in the hurry [Applause] up got his Man Down field they make the stop but there is a flag on the field we'll see what that's all about so the decision has been made and the coach will take the penalty here's this offense with a fresh set of downs from the gun he'll try to throw quick strike complete and he'll step across the sidelines after making a good gain on that one and I think this receiver's Forte is his route running he's a guy that can line up all over the field but it's not just catching post rout and goes this guy can run shallows he can run Slants he can run the option routes and soft spots in the defense this guy really has all the routes in his toolbx and the throw out to the sideline good for a few and they'll shove him out of bounds after the short gain and the wide receivers have to understand what part of the field they're on I got to make sure I have enough space when I run those out routes that when I break I can catch the football and try to get up field get a few more yards he runs out of space but he got the catch and got some positive yards they're going to throw it again right down the middle he's got it and the defense makes the immediate tackle but he has enough for the first down well offensive coordinators put in countless hours every week trying to formate and use different Personnel groupings and shifts and motions to give their offense a success on third down you can tell in this game this offensive coordinator he has put in the work this looking for room it's Hampton they make the stop but you can't give up four yards a chunk on the ground down in this area of the field it's at the 18 after the productive first down play it's second and six Johnson looking to throw setting up the screen didn't have much room to run and not a whole lot of help short gain there and still plenty of ground to cover for the first down they were able to make the completion but he had to pick his way for just a little bit needed a little more help to Spring him for some yardage yeah if you're going to have success when you throw it outside like that you're going to need some more blocking and better blocking down field give the defense credit though they were able to rally and made a tackle quarterback on the keeper and the Tar Heels get enough to move the chains this quarterback does an outstanding job in his preparation watching film and understanding when he has to pull the ball on these types of run plays great job keying on the defender and quickly making the right decision to pull it and then go get North and get the first he's got it he's brought down but there's a flag on the field let's see what the call is the officials offer the deal and the coach accepts it they will take the penalty they want to throw it makes the grab it's Blackwell he gets it in touchdown UNC defense has to be better on the back end they knew this offense was going to come out and they were going to challenge them they were going to to push the ball vertically down the field they've now given up two touchdown passes in this game they've got to shore up their play in the back half he'll try to add another to their lead and the extra point will tack another one onto this lead to a drive there of 84 yards and the score comes on a 17 yd throw for the touchdown the kickoff team out there and ready to go he'll bring it back from inside his SP he was hoping for something a little more Dynamic that they get him on the ground at the 20 the Minnesota offense is headed back onto the field trailing by three touchdowns if you're going to get back in it David the time to start is right now got to start now defense giv up points on that last possession again the offense is going to have to score and Jesse probably score pretty quick yeah you got to go Tempo you're going to have to try to fit in as many plays as you can throughout the rest of this game but I think more than that You' got to eliminate the negative plays no more penalties and no more turnovers that completion leaves us with second and medium they're going back to the ground rumbles ahead for a pick up of five to the 29 that didn't bust for a long one but now third down becomes very manageable it's not third in eternity now the whole Playbook the short passing game long passing game all of it's available they'll try to muscle their way forward on Third and short from the 29 they'll try to bully their way for the first nice job to get it past the sticks and they get him down at the 35 and that's all you want right you want that first down understand the situation understand I got to get North and South get a first down get a new set of downs and the Golden Gophers will snap it on First and 10 he'll pull it on the read that's what you expect from a senior don't give them any extra yards great tackle there yeah and it's a nice job by this defense understanding listen that QB is a threat and they're going to run all kinds of options and he's going to run the football they were dialed in and got that St in the ground kept it on the ground on first down let's see what they do on second the inside handoff they'll get the first down it's spotted on the 49 it's so nice as an offense to know you can generate explosive plays by handing the football off to this guy he has got incredible Speed The Golden Gophers have their offense in high gear the give is to Taylor and I think they'll give him two on that one second and eight coming up well man there's some big hitting going on in the trenches right now this defense they take a lot of pride in stopping the Run let's keep our eye on them throughout the the game and see if they can contain this running attack after picking up a couple it's second and eight they'll keep it on the ground able to pick his way forward for a decent game before the defense gets him down hey five to six yards a pop I don't know if you guys are really good at math but that usually equals a first down every couple carries so don't forget about the Run game keep them honest Pound That Rock number seven on this drive and it'll be third and two they'll try to run for [Applause] it they wrestle him to the ground but he's got PL for a first down well it just seems like everything is working for the offense on this drive another nice gain this time on the ground now on the move at the 28 yd line on first down On The Run it's brosmer complete stopped after making the catch you can hand it to him you can throw it to him either way he's making his presence felt those are your favorite plays re the him plays right they're finding ways to get him the ball because he can make plays whether it's running or receiving out of the back field they're going to continue to highlight this guy trying to get a rhythm in the passing game now on second down off the bootle and rolling out fires to the wide out he got it goes out of bounds just short of the goal line and they'll be set up and in great position here man this quarterback is having a first half he's over 200 yards already heating up setting up this dude might break his career high in passing I don't know what it is somebody get stats for him and the Golden Gophers are threatening on first and goal slams ahead and he takes it in for the score touchdown golden goer after the score we'll see if that breeze a little fire into them and you see it all the time right you get that score you get that energy the crowd gets involved and the defense got to get out and get you a stop but this was step one to getting them back in the ball game the unit on the field and the extra point is good but they still Trail 3521 they put together an 81 yd drive and finish to deal with the short touchdown run from the two they've got it down to a two touchdown deficit trailing by 14 and about to kick it away and he's going to bring it out didn't find any crease in that kickoff coverage and he'll be stopped at the 17 North Carolina has it back in the Tar Hill so pleased to send the offense back out from the gun they'll try to impose their will that may not look like a huge run but they'll take it as it gets him up to the 24 you want to talk about making it easy for an offensive coordinator you pick up a bunch of yards on first down make that second really really manageable that's a great job by the offense they can really be aggressive after that last play it's second and three off play action he lets one fly deep oh he gets down field for the big catch got a lot of running room and he takes it all the way they couldn't stop him touchdowns and the defense lets the big tight end behind him and you could see it when he saw his tight end streaking down the field he knew he had to throw it up in the air let him go make a play he does it big play for this offense lining up to attack one more onto that lead and the extra point is true and the lead balloons to 21 this offense Prides itself on going after you and they did with that long touchdown pass to finish off a two-play drive the kickoff team on the field as they'll send this one away he'll start the return inside as five nice job by the kickoff team everybody stayed in their lanes and they'll stop him at the 16 Minnesota has it back and the Gopher offense is headed onto the field they're down by 21 points but you got a touchdown here and you do at least apply a little game pressure Jesse it's true I think for them to get back in this one at this point now they need the quarterback to play his best football he's going to have to be good really pre- snap David making sure they're in the right looks and got to be really good with his decision Mak he's got to be doubted in because defensively you're giving up points so it's not like you have the luxury of your defense playing great the offense is going to have to score and score pretty dang quickly they'll ride the running back and leave it with him and excellent Vision to find Running Room there and make a really good pick up before the defense put a stop to it and I don't care if I get it by two by 20 by 30 by 40 I I just I just want to get the first down understanding the sit sitation understanding where the sticks are doesn't have to be sexy but I got to make sure I get to that stick get to the first down Mark he'll keep it himself they'll pick up four second and Six coming well this offense came into the game knowing they wanted to be physical they wanted to establish the line of scrimmage and they're running downhill right at this defense and they're turning out positive yardage early after the run second [Music] medium he'll do it himself pass to Sticks him still on his feet able to work it to the 39 yd line and that'll be a first down there's an example of the offense taking advantage of all the attention the defense is giving this outstanding running back remember he's one of the best in the game they're expecting him to get the football so the quarterback says you know what I'll just keep it no one's keying on me I'm going to get up field and find an exp play finds a tight end and a good job of coverage by that defense just a short pick up I like this tight end he does a really nice job on his route running he's been beating man coverage he can find the soft spots and zones you got to get him involved L getting set on second down out of the gun the give to the back they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one and I think that might be an example of the running back maybe trying to do a little bit too much everybody wants to try to bounce the ball outside and hit the home run but in college football at this level you just need to do a better job taking what the defense gives you they'll come to the line at the 42 facing a third and long dropping back it's brosmer released to the back makes the grab he gets it oh so close to the first down marker but I think he's going to be a touch short it's a nice effort by the running back but in that third and long situation just too much work for that running back to convert that third down really nice job got to give the defense credit they surrounded him got him to the ground the Golden Gophers line up to punt it away oh that's one that can mess with your confidence that is horrible so the decision has been made and the coach will take the penalty and the Golden Gophers are marching down the field he'll come out throwing on first down and it's in complete if you're going to take a hit like that you might as well hang on to the ball the big tight end tries to make a catch and you could tell extends for the ball but great job by the defender getting in there making the hit dislodging the football out same time as he's going to catch it and the big tight end couldn't hold on to it they go to the draw had to work to pick up three down to the 33 yd line and the running back didn't get much there nice job by the defense you can tell they're focused in on this running back on this run game being physical getting knockbacks and limiting his carries third down conversions are a huge stat and this one would be a doozy if they can pull it off get it out on the screen makes his man miss defense was not fooled by that screen to the back and they'll stop him short of the marker it'll be fourth down they didn't quite get that route run deep enough to pick up the first down now they've got a fourth and short and I think everybody at home tends to yell at their television set why aren't you getting past the first down marker why did you run your route short defense did a good job knowing where that was but now fourth down offense has to make a decision absolutely perfect so they were able to put up a three spot on that last drive and now the kickoff team out there as they prepare to put boot to leather and he's coming out of the end zone really disciplined job by the coverage unit to get down there and make the stop at the 19 the North Carolina offense returns to the field intercepted God on the return and he will roll into the end zone touchdown Minnesota the DB saw it he thought don't drop it don't drop it then thought don't get caught don't get caught and he didn't the pick six these guys can play offense too now look at this I showed you I could be a wide receiver coach might split him out at wide receiver next week after making that big play but defense great job making the interception and you're right doing something with it don't just slide down don't be content take that thing back he'll try to tack on one more hit that one with some aggression for the point after they're lining up to kick it off after the pick six and that defense will come out feeling it out of the end zone stopped at the 17 and he's probably second guessing that return North Carolina has it back in the Tar Hill so pleased to send the offense back out the running back has it and he could not get loose on the Run That Back had absolutely nowhere to run the football actually is he counting I think he's counting to make sure there's only 11 guys on defense second down here and maybe they've got get one more snap off before the two-minute warning it'll be a draw they needed to find enough space and get it moving forward and they're up to the 22 after the strong run on second down third down coming do they do it again Johnson wants to throw it Mak a connection bulldozes his way through he's there to make the stop but not before he sets up this offense first and goal from the seven well after that last play you can see how electrifying this guy is and how special he is after he makes the catch if I'm on offense I'm trying to find a lot of ways to get him touches in this game this offense has put on a display in the first half and they have a chance to attack another one on before the break makes the grab and he goes down after making the grab picked up a few but he's still short of the first down marker Q excellent location on that throw out route against man coverage you cannot miss if you throw that behind that might be a pick six so nice job by the quarterback with his accuracy looking for just one more yard it's second and goal trying to punch it in he's dropped behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three and on that situation on the one yd line the defense brings so many guys Palmer Gets In The Back Field creates the negative play yeah I think seeing the overall athleticism of this defense they've got guys flying to the ball quick timeout called by the offense after the play this is a money play on Third and goal from the gun wants to pass and the defense makes a play sacking him back at the 10 we got a timeout here late in the first half and they'll try to get more points on the board before the break they'll have to settle for a field goal attempt it is true as he puts three on the board and now the lead is even bigger so they get the field goal now about to kick it away and you get a stop here and you go to halftime feeling really good about things here's the return from inside his tent really disciplined job by the coverage unit to get down there and make the stop at the 19 the Minnesota offense is headed back onto the field this lead in the half you're behind you'd love to create something before the break to build momentum Jesse well you've also had some miscues on offense big part of why you're losing the game right now i' take it into halftime make my adjustments and come out ready in the second half yeah I'm going to take it in halftime too Paul but I'm trying to put some points up right here be aggressive set the tone be like Hey listen this is what you're going to get in the second half find really quickly you can go to dropping back it's brosmer he off one deep down the left side a sensational grab down the field there as they try to at least put a positive spin on the end of this game touchdown golden goer and they add six more to the board with that trip to the house man what a great job by this offense finishing the half it wasn't perfect you're still trailing but now you that lead to a onore game now in the second half we can come out make some things happen we just created some big momentum for this offense now we take it into half time winding up to add another and it's up and good as they draw Just a Touch closer yeah and he's been throwing it all over the yard and he's now over 300 yards on the day so been a sucess full Daye now 300 yards I don't know Palmer 300 nowadays that's like what back in the day for you that would have been 500 I would have won the Heisman maybe it's a big deal today in college football no doubt listen he's in a rhythm right now he's in a Groove we've seen good decision making he's been playing on time and he's been deadly accurate throwing it and guess what this game is far from over just about set for the second half kickoff on the run from inside his own five he was looking for some Running Room but not much to be found as he stopped at the 18 Minnesota has it back and the goer offense is headed onto the field all kinds of room to throw that one in there and chunk plays of the name of the game and they get one here before the defense finally makes the stop you can feel the momentum starting to swing in this Stadium it's first and 10 they'll go to the ground this offensive line better figure out a plan for this D tackle he is tough to block with one guy you might want to start double teaming him he's going to be a problem moving forward you saw all of his ability on that last didn't get much on first down it's second and nine they go right back to him and a nice solid pick up there before the defense wrestles him to the ground it's the emmo of this offense and they really put a lot on the offensive line to go out and really try and establish their dominance and their assertiveness and they've done a good job of that early in this game running the football this defense will try to force a fourth down on Third and short from the 45 looking to throw it's brosmer here he goes breaking the pocket still on his feet at the 45 picks up the first down and gets down to avoid contact this quarterback doing a lot of good decision making on that last play first off nice job extending but then understanding what the coverage was understanding nobody's open and then going hey look I can go get this myself and finally not only am I going to get this first down I'm going to take care of myself too I'm going to slide I practiced this all week little baseball slide action we got to Fresh that of quarterback now breaking the field he's going to run it and he avoids the hit and slides after the short game those always sting a little bit when you get so close to to getting the QB to the ground Crea a negative play and then all a sudden he turns it into something positive just really annoying as a defensive guy and now on second down for this offense he's looking to throw snagged in the middle it's Glenn tackle is made but not until he gets the first down well it's a nice job by the defender there closing the Gap with the wide receiver they're going to complete the hitch pass but he's able to run right up on him get him to the ground for a minimal gain the golden goers will have it first and 10 free snap Motion in the back field he's looking to throw it the sweet feet by a little time short gain on the play before he slides well you're making a positive out of a negative and that time quarterback nice job buying time he's trying to throw the football downfield nothing there so instead of throwing it away getting the incomplete just get what you can get and make this next downb management now on second down from the gun the game able to make the tackle but not before he gets five y down to the 21 and you know when we talk about great third down defenses it really starts with them getting stops on first and second down you've got to get those stops early in the drives to set up third and long so that's a missed opportunity on that second down by this defense quarterback on the keeper that play just never had a chance a knock him down for a Los of five nice job playing assignment football by that defensive end knowing what my job is not letting that quarterback get out get loose making a good play and most importantly being there in the right spot and getting him on the ground and for the second time tonight they'll try out the field goal kicker he splits to the ight and puts three on the board so after the made field goal they'll kick it away and rely on their defense and he'll just take a knee and this drive will start 25 the North Carolina offense returns to the field and to settle for the Chip Shot field goal last time Jesse they had love for this one to pay off bigger yeah it just comes down to execution too did a nice job out in the field stalled a little bit once they got down to the goal line so they just need to be a little bit more crisp here yeah and listen I I think the first part was the most important part you got to put the drive together first to get down there now when we get down there focus on execution and getting six points after the completion it's second and 10 from their own [Applause] 25 this time on Target and they finally haul him down but not before the good catch and run and there was no question in that scenario that's where the quarterback was going he knew he had his receiver in a matchup that he liked running a route where he would find himself opening nice job between those two they'll put it in play from the 41 on first down now from the shotgun the hand off to the [Applause] back didn't get much on first down it's second and nine got his man quickly he's really close to that first down marker but they stop him just a bit short I love offenses and quarterbacks that are willing to take the easy stuff take those easy throws that are guaranteed to get positive yards yeah I'm going to take big shots down the field too but don't forget it's easier to pick up second and five third and five than it is when we start getting those long yard situations receiver on the Move gets the touch pass that'll be enough for a first down as he crosses the 50 and gets it to the 48 I love the idea and I love just finding ways to get your best players out in the open field this pre-nap motion and using it to their advantage on that last play I think that was a nice call the tarel have this offense rolling going to the ground you'll take four yards on first down every time second and six you know it's so important for offenses to want to keep third Downs manageable the way you do that is by having success like that running the football on first down solid pick up of four on first down it's second and six running back searching for a hole he's dropped behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three when a running back has had as much success as this guy's had so far listen defense has got to quue in they got to quue in to him he's priority number one number two and number three that's a good start to maybe turning this defensive effort around a third and long coming up here it's a draw and the defense is swarming to keep him from getting to the first down [Applause] and they're running out the kicker to give it a try he says he can kick one from 75 but here he's going to need just 58 of them and it's good from 58 yards out how nice is it as a head coach to have a kicker like this it makes these decisions on fourth down so much easier just trut him out there and let him stroke it through the uprights after putting up a three spot the kickoff unit set to go here he comes from inside his own five didn't find any crease in that kickoff coverage and he'll be stopped at the 17 the Minnesota offense is headed back onto the field guys that last trip a little disappointing having to take the three yeah I think Jesse you see so many offens ran right through the defender and now he's still running and a pick up of better than 30 yard on that completion before the defense brings him down and this defense is going to have their hands full because they're going to need to be comfortable with guys oneon-one islands in the perimeter of the field and they're just going to have to make better plays than what we saw right there they knew this offense was going to try to be aggressive got to need better effort in the back end for this defense moving forward how about that last big play you're backed up and now you've got it first and 10 from the 46 leaves it with the back shows him the stiff arm well the offense knew what they needed to get that first down so they dial up running play they get just enough to keep the drive alive they have a first down at the 41 yd [Applause] line used the play fake now to throw pressure is effective from the defense they knock him down just behind the Midfield stri at the 48 well the offense trying to stay aggressive right you just came up with a huge play and right away you go back to another pass but you got to do a better job protecting your quarterback can't give up a sack there the first down sack pushes the ball back for this long second down out of the gun the inside hand off to the running back a strong tackle and wrap up from the junior they line up and it is a long way to the sticks from here on Third and long he's going to have to turn one loose down field the quarterback scrambled around but the defense able to him and turn it into a sack not a ton of play calls for third in California when you're on offense you know you're going to have to have your quarterback holding on to the football you really got to think about how you're going to protect him offensive coordinator may want to think about using more max protect schemes get more bodies into to give this quarterback a chance and the Golden Gophers will send out the punt unit this will be the second time they've had to kick it away a fair short distance here toward the sidelines not his best work North Carolina has it back in the tar Hills so pleased to send the offense back out you want to talk about having a weapon to bail out a drive David that's why kickers are so important after that long field goal and listen important is a relative term we need to make longer passes and get better gains so we don't have to kick long field goals Palmer again on offense and they've got the weapons to do that David they just got to be able to plays up guys have to be able to make them oneon-one make life easier on this kicker who is so important to this team he stopped at the 49 after gaining 10 there's really no secret to it David when this guy's running well this offense is so hard to stop it opens up everything and he's having a great day showing you a little bit of everything and this offense has got it rolling on the ground it'll be a first down from the 49 yd line On The Run it's Hampton good pick up on that play it'll bring up second and four I know it's sexy to throw the football but if you can pound it away and get these kind of gains they will just add up wear the defense down get first downs and ultimately get some points got six on first down now a lot of options on second and four from the gun running back gets to give and the defense hold firm no pick up at all on that play you can't let the same guy beat you over and over and over again you got to make adjustments sometimes you got to bring more guys in the Box more guys to the football and make sure he's not the one who beat you here on third down looking to throw for it shoots it to the left got him down field dances away again that is exactly what you're looking for when you talk explosive plays the defense finally able to make the stop well how about the offense setting that play up we've seen earlier in the game a couple shorter throws they're just trying to suck those safeties closer to the line of scrimmage anticipating that they would get an opportunity to take a shot they called the perfect play at the perfect time right there he's got it on the Move they'll get it down to the eight yd line on that throw and catch and the defense is backed up against the wall nice job decision making by the quarterback there in the RPO not handing it off knowing he had to throw it but then also understanding his open guy was going to be in the right frag operating in the Red Zone here on second down Johnson looking to throw snags it they get him stopped at the two the first and goal you complete some of these hitch throws early you're setting up the hitch and go later on you can pump fake that and then the receiver can pette right up the sideline that might be a home run play for the offense and the tars will try to punch it in on first and goal he'll just keep slinging it feeling some heat and the misfire goes out of the back of the end zone sometimes as a quarterback when you're feeling the Rhythm and you're feeling yourself you just want to keep taking shots right this guy's already thrown three touchdown passes he saw a look he liked decided to Let Her Fly haven't seen a lot of balls fall in complete especially deep down the field that one did but I'd expect this guy to keep letting it go now the play fake let it fly reels it in in the end zone touchdown North Carolina and what a nice nice play call and nice execution play action you're thinking run quarterback pulls it out throws the football right behind those guys and gets the touchdown yeah it was a nice job there by the quarterback too on the ball handling he just froze the defense just long enough to help those wide receivers and targets get some separation in the end zone and at that point it was just an easy pitching catch they'll to add another to their lead and the extra point pushes the lead to 14 they put together a 65 yd drive for the score and it was finished off with a 2yd touchdown thas the kickoff team out there getting set on the move from inside his five he was looking for some Running Room but not much to be found found as he stopped at the 18 Minnesota has it back and the Gopher offense is headed onto the field now we'll get a chance to see if they can answer that last score trailing by 14 Jesse Yeah and at this point of the game I feel like offensively you should go back to what's been working for you in this game don't be afraid to dial up plays that you've already had success with running it and throwing it it's okay to repeat plays down 14 at this point and I would also say Palmer kind of understanding that my defense is not playing great so I know offensively I got to put some good possessions together here make something happen on this side of the FI finds a little bit of space gets three to the 22 if every Journey begins with a step this offense needs to step into a third down conversion and then try to turn it into some scores and fast finds his man it's Taylor makes the grab and it's enough for the first down before he's dragged to the ground well look that wasn't a touchdown but that was a massive play for this offense they needed some momentum they needed to find a rhythm in what better way than converting on third down awesome job by the quarterback getting through his progression throws to the wide out wide open down field and the explosiveness the big gerain gets it to the 49 yd line and on that last play he's now over 400 yard passing well Reese if you're going to throw for over 400 bills you got to spread the praise around up front they've done an outstanding job protecting this quarterback and his receivers have been winning one-on-one the Golden Gophers are moving quickly down the field wide receiver now comes in motion try to get the edge with a quick touch pass across the 35 and it is a chunk play a huge gain on that one before the defense brings it to an end guys we've reached the end of the period and North Carolina's on top and they've built a comfortable lead after three quarters of play Let's Take a look at how we've gotten here they'll break the seal on this quarter here on first down in the red area it's Taylor they knock him down after a pick up of four ball is at the N yd line going to work on second down in the red zone is still some ground to cover to pick up that first down fast motion from the offense touch pass on the run really nice stop there from this senior leader and these little touch passes man they're just the easiest completions ever for quarterbacks Palmer I bet you would have loved being able to just Flip It Forward that counts as to your completion percentage which is good and then it's all run after the catch so pretty easy for a QB you wouldn't have been the only allamerican in this booth David if I were allowed to have Push passes when I was playing quarterback I'll tell you that it is so hard to defend it's so hard to seal that edge especially when this guy's Full Speed Ahead coming around theide they able to get him stopped just shy of the first down marker they' hop to be able to pick up enough after the catch but a good stop leaves them with a fourth and short really good job by the defense being physical understanding the situation in the game the ball's going to come out quick you know that go make the tackle Force the fourth down splits the uprights right down the middle so after the last Drive ended with a field goal the kickoff team out there to send it away and he takes this from inside the five not a lot of space to be found good Hustle by the coverage team and they stop him at the 21 the North Carolina offense returns to the field off play action on first down unloads to the wide out a strike downfield and they are pushing the ball down the field a big pick up on that one and the tackle is finally made he's been so locked in it seems like any pass called is a guaranteed chunk play yeah and and winning late like this in the ball game keep trusting him keep spinning you know why because stats matter late in the game you want some postseason Awards keep chucking it keep getting those stats trying play action and they got him for the sack I think you're the head coach here it's a bit of a mixed reaction to your passing attack so far in this game you put up a bunch of yards throwing the football you lit up the scoreboard but you've also given up four sacks pass protection has been a problem so far in this game a first down sack can wreck a drive let's see what they've got on second and 14 Johnson wants to throw it trying to get to him and that's just a flat misfire not even close to his receiver now facing a third and long looking to throw and he needs a bunch they're trying to get to it and defense gets to the quarterback another sack by this defense but how about this QB he continues to get back up every single time still leading his team still staying positive still putting them in a good position to win this football game the tarel will bring the punt team onto the field this will be the second time they've had to kick it away they'll get him down at the 21 yd line the coverage team able to stop him right there the Minnesota offense is headed back onto the field snagged on the outside it's Williams and he'll make his way out of bounds after the solid pick up this is the moment for this offense to put a drive together it doesn't matter what's happened up to the point of this game but trailing right now you got to put some points up on the board this is where all 11 guys need to be playing together as one on second down they'll take to the air fires to the wide out that friends is a busted play incomplete here they come trying to convert a third and short from the 28 back to throw it's brosmer and he's picked off again his night vision hasn't been up to speed his third interception and he is taking it all the way back touchdown UNC and that just might do it man offense needed points needed points badly defense comes up with the big inter ception takes it all the way back just to pad their lead a little bit and make this game almost almost Out Of Reach lining up to tack one more onto that lead and now with the extra point they're up by here in the fourth they're about to kick it away and the defense probably can't wait to get back out there after the pick six he'll bring it back from inside as five and good work by the coverage team to knock down the Return Man Minnesota has it back and the Gopher offense is headed onto the field they'll come out on this drive and let it rip using the back as a receiver on the screen not a whole lot of room there on that screen passes it just never developed and defensively this is exactly what you want right you got the big lead so you can play Big Zone coverages just keep the ball in front of you keep your eye on the quarterback rally to the football gang tackle and you're going to win this game on second down he's looking down field find his big tight end he's close to the first down but they're going to Mark him just a little short well and here's the problem offensively because you're trailing by so much so late in the game the defense now is going to be playing big Zone coverages and they're going to allow you to throw the ball underneath in the middle of the field rally to make a tackle and bleed the clock it's going to be hard now for this offense to claw their way back in this one they'll try to get it through the air CAU over the middle it's Glenn now they'll really try to get this drive going good execution on third down as they have it first and 10 at the 31 it's tough on the defense there third down you're in zone coverage everybody's watching the quarterback and you're trying to make a break on the ball but he just got it out of his hands too quickly and the throw was too accurate really nothing you can do there and it's now a fresh set of downs he wants to throw it again and this will be incomplete a big hit there forces second down well this guy must feel like he's running into a buzz this game he has been under duress all game long that's a big reason why he's thrown multiple interceptions in the game too nothing coming easy to him it's hard to see the field when your internal clock is going off so fast because of the pressure of this defense and that's why they F themselves down by so much here in the fourth and the defense stops him just short of the first down maybe needed a few more chain links to move the sticks he's just winning that match up in the slot every time and when you put him in the slot Reese he's closer to the quarterback it's an easier throw we can run in we can run out and really take advantage of his versatility of the guy that slot position on Third and short they'll try to convert through the air and the incomplete pass will bring up fourth down it's a nice adjustment by the defense here with a big lead in the game you're putting extra DBS on the field knowing the offense has to throw to get back in this one in the fourth quarter so your best cover guys on the field field and they force an incompletion on the last one coach has no choice here the offense has to stay on the field down multiple possessions this late fourth down attempt coming and they'll pick up the first down and Mark it at the 47 and this is the part of the field where it starts to be even more clear right I'm not backed up in my own territory I'm getting towards Midfield fourth at inches I can't get inches I like my offense I like their aggressiveness and I like the way they went and got the first down and the Golden Gophers are moving quickly down the field to the air on first down finds his tight end and an absolutely Fearless tackle giving up size still got him on the turf well I know the tight end did some good things after the catch but got to give the quarterback credit too for the location of the throw because he put it out in front of his big man he was able to make the catch and accelerate creating some distance there between him and the defense dropping back it's br M fires to the big fella and he's knocked down immediately but not before he moves the chain ever since they invented the forward pass the tight ends have been running the drag and getting the first down I I think it's because the tight ends is so much versatility you know they can block and stay in the formation or they can release and come out but either way if the quarterback's patient most of the time that drag route's going to come over going up top on first down makes his connection across the 25 he's got room they make the stop but not before they do their work up top and pick up a first down and at this point the defense looks as if they've been in one of those dizzy bat races they've got no idea where the ball's coming from he's over 500 yards passing yeah this is a Heisman trophy level performance from this guy the accuracy the decision making the athleticism everything has been on display I I like it just frustrate the defense get that five to six yards make him onor the Run make him know that you're willing to run the football and run it effectively halfway there on first down it's second and five to the ground with the back pulled down after a pick up of three balls at the 13 really need to pick up this conversion and avoid having to settle for the field goal wants to throw on third they're setting up the screen and that one looked great on the grease board but when they blow it up like that the defense is going to win every time third down is money down you got to find a way to execute and get theall ball out and get it to your playmakers that was the opposite of that they got it to their Playmakers and they got absolutely nowhere lost yards on the play fourth down now upcoming on fourth down going to the air they got him it's a sack and what a stop for this defense to turn it over on Downs well that play never had a chance on fourth down they're trying to catch the defense off guard throwing for it but no protection quarterback didn't have an opportunity to step up and get rid of that football give the defense credit man tremendous aggression there on Fourth here comes the offense on first down takes a hand off it's Hampton into a mass of giant bodies we'll call it a one yd gain to the 24 didn't get much on first down it's second and nine one back in the back field he gets to carry finds Z PR and he's got four out to the 29 I think they called that knowing they weren't going to hit a home run so why would you call it that well you call it so third down becomes an easier down it's not third and long where I have to pass the football now all options on the table you got to think they'll try to muscle their way forward on Third and short from the 29 give to the back and he was fortunate not to lose yardage on that play able to wedge it back to the line of scrimmage defense is about firing off hitting the offensive guys and staying in your gaps everybody knowing where they're supposed to be you could tell the defense everyone was right where they're supposed to be nowhere to run and the tars will call on punt team let's see if he can help the coverage team out with this one fair catch called for and taken at the 30 yd line the Minnesota offense is headed back onto the field these last couple of drives Jesse have been about the defense making clutch stand I think for this offense they can stay AGG he's Off to the Races he found plenty of room and he gets it to the 39 yd line and this offense has got to kick it in high gear now making big play that is great but we got to go up Tempo we got to go fast we're trailing big in this ball game we got to put a lot of Drives together and maybe even get lucky with an onside kick that kind of play will send a surge of energy through your offense now they've got it first and 10 inside the 40 and it's incomplete if you're going to take a hit like that you might as well hang on to the ball at this point of the game in the fourth quarter it is going to be going to be tough for this offense to get some completions here because now trailing by this much the defense is expecting pass and they're putting a whole bunch of extra DBS on the field to help them out in coverage here comes the offense on second down scanning the field It's brosmer Quickly out to the tight end and he laid the lumber to stop him from getting the first down I'll say this man in college football you see a lot of bad tackling you didn't see it right there that was an awesome job first off being there at the point of attack once the tight end made the catch there was no doubt he was going down great job form tack trying to move the sticks on third down through the air and that's incomplete a Defender all over him knocked the ball to the ground forth down coming up third and short in college football today you see so much more pass than you used to the offense stays aggressive and I think they stay aggressive because they know they're in field goal range they got that three in their back pocket down by multiple possessions they can't come up empty on this drive in the fourth quarter they'll go for it on fourth down this time it's complete ripping off a good chunk inside the 25 and they're set up with a first down the metrics tell you so often go ahead go for it on fourth down and it pays off there that just shows you the head coach's confidence in his quarterback to go out on a critical fourth down and execute they want to just keep throwing it with the catch it's Jackson he gets it all the way down to the five yd line a terrific catch and run before he stopped just another big play for this guy who spent the entire game wide open couple of touchdowns there and he moves the sticks Again David yeah so I'll keep finding him reys I mean this is a guy that listen we're in the second half now he's already made plays I know I can trust him so I'm going to continue to feature him in this offense because I know he'll continue to make big plays the snap sets up to throw gliding to the right still trying to make a play and he's sprinting he'll take it all the way touchdown Minnesota well that didn't necessarily go as planned but it was most effective in the end I love it reys down in the red zone and this quarterback didn't have anybody open didn't Panic he just decided man I'm going to go do this myself I'm going to use my wheels and put up six on the board he did just [Music] [Music] that now they'll line up for what they hope is automatic bangs it through for an extra point a 69 yd touchdown drive and they punctuated it with a 5yd touchdown run they are running out of time here they need to get the ball back they'll line up for the onside kick they're on it they recover the onside kick and they get it right back Minnesota has it back and the goer offense is headed onto the field throws to the tight end and that incomplete pass caused by the big hit on first down second down coming after the quarterback and receiver failed to hook up they'll try it again on second down looking downfield It's brosmer Quickly to the tight end look it's a nice game but I don't know if it's worth the seconds they're losing on the game clock in this type of situation you got to be throwing at least to the first down markers or you got to be throwing to the sidelines to get out of bounds the Golden Gophers want to move quickly from the gun on third down caught near the sideline it's Jackson he steps out of bounds but he's got first down on the play they absolutely had to have that third down to keep any glimmer of hope alive and defensively that's exactly what I want make you get to third down the clock is your enemy multiple possession lead that is right where I want this offense looking to go up top on first down got him in it's Jackson they make the stop trying to pick up just a little bit at a time to get to that first down marker man down on the play as the officials take a break to let him be checked out second down here and maybe they've got time to get one more snap off before the two-minute warning he's looking to throw just a short pass to the tight end they stop him almost immediately short gain there and still a little ground to cover to pick up the first trying to move the sticks on third down they'll try to pick up the first through the air almost almost had the completion just missed it and this offense stays aggressive and they pass the football I think you can always look back and say third and short I'd love for you to run it be the more physical team but nice job sticking up and Bo their NE next for this defense they're going to send out the field goal unit and that kicker will have to launch a rocket as someone once said from way downt bang outside of 60 yard got all three timeouts left in your back pocket you're down of possession here late in the fourth quarter you do not have to kick an onside kick if you trust your defense you use your timeouts wisely you can have a lot of time left on offense go and win
