good evening space flight enthusiasts I was planning to go to karaoke tonight and then I got this update from the FAA quote this information is preliminary and subject to change we need to be clear about that but here's the current situation the FAA is aware an anomaly occurred during the SpaceX Starling group 8-6 mission that launched from Cape Canaveral space Forest Station in Florida on August 28th the incident involved the failure of the Falcon 9 booster rocket while landing on a drone ship at Sea no public injuries or public property damage have been reported the FAA is requiring an investigation an investigation is designed to further enhance Public Safety determine the root cause of the event and identify corrective actions to avoid it from happening again the FAA will be involved in every step of the investigation process process and must approve spacex's final report including any corrective actions a return tolight of the Falcon 9 booster rocket is based on the FAA determining that any system process or procedure related to the anomaly does not affect Public Safety in addition SpaceX may need to request and receive approval from the FAA to modify its license that incorporates any corrective actions and meet all other licensing requirements now it's best that we not try to read anything else into this this may just be standard procedure but it also May indicate that something happened with this Landing that could suggest a more General problem with the Merlin engines or something else I must confess that this investigation surprises me because this didn't happen during the flight it happened during the landing and not during a process that would have threatened Public Safety whatsoever however if a Merlin engine was on fire during the landing process or if there was a problem that was rearing its ugly head before the landing actually took place then that could suggest a problem that could affect future flights during the ascent not just during The Descent if that is indeed the case then the FAA investigation is definitely warranted however if that is not the case then I suspect that this is all going to be over with very very soon I will keep you up to date in the meantime stay angry about space [Music]
