hey everybody it's Chris it's Thursday August the 29th it's interview day and if you don't know what I'm talking about let me fill you in so kamla Harris has not sat for an interview with any media Outlet mainstream or otherwise uh since she emerged as the likely and then formal Democratic nominee for president well that ends tonight at 9:00 p.m. eastern time KLA Harris will talk to CNN's Dana Bash now she's going to do it with Tim Walls her vice presidential running mate now I have been critical of Harris's media strategy I've said she needs to sit for an interview and she's doing it good let me suggest something uh strategically I actually think that what Harris should do is make this the first of a whole bunch of interviews that she sits for and I'm going to tell you that I I I don't think that's sort of a democracy argument though I think it would be good for democracy I actually think it's a um campaign strategy argument so when you do what Harris has done which is early in the month uh early in August she said I'm going to do at I'm going to do one major media interview before the end of the month you make that one interview really really really important it's like the Super Bowl of interviews right it's it's um everyone is going to watch everyone in the political world will watch or or or read coverage of it or watch clips of it right it becomes a giant deal it's um to the extent there's destination TV anymore which I'm not sure there is it is like mustc TV Thursday night musse TV on CNN um and I'm not sure that's a good thing for Harris because I think it makes the stakes super high right I don't think she's going to make any sort of large screw up I'm sure she's been working with her media advisers and her consultants for a while now to make sure she knows what questions are likely to be asked and has a ready answer for them but I think it does mean that everything's going to be really closely scrutinized and if she does say something inconsistent with what she said before or um uh a little off message or breaks with Joe Biden it's going to be covered and be a really big deal what I would do if I were her will say okay yep she's sitting down with danab bash on Thursday night on Sunday she's going to do a Meet the Press or ABC or CBS or whatever Fox News and then on Tuesday she's going to talk to another Network and then she's going to do a sit down with the New York Times and then she's going to do a thing with the Pod save America and then announce five of these things uh today or tomorrow because the more you do the less any one of them means right if you only do one in the story as it has been for five weeks one of the narratives of the campaign is why is she not talking to the media well then when you do talk to the media it everything becomes heightened but if you then talk to the media again and again and again and again then then any one interview is necessarily not as important or impactful right um and I think we have evidence that this works John McCain in 2000 and then John McCain in 2008 the Straight Talk Express remember that if you don't it was a bus he took a bus around a campaign Bus Around mostly New Hampshire but early States and he invited reporters along with him and you could ask him any question you wanted he would sit in the back of the bus with his advisers you could talk to him as he answer questions from reporters until there were no more questions to be asked what was the effect of that number one um he got a ton of positive press for being so open and transparent number two did McCain give a few bad answers over that time absolutely but because he did it so much those bad answers kind of got subsumed within all the other stuff number three the overall tenor of the press toward McCain was it extremely positive right uh uh they focused on sort of interesting things he said rather than oh he made a mistake oh he made a gaff so I'm not suggesting that kamla Harris start the Straight Talk restart the Straight Talk Express I I get it McCain was someone who loved reporters was super comfortable with them and had good relations with them Harris that's less the case but I do think it makes a ton of sense for her to not just do this one interview and then do one interview next month and one interview the following month because I just think it puts too much pressure on her and too there's too much scrutiny on that any one interview do a bunch do five do 10 you'll get more comfortable doing it which will be a good thing for Harris and any one of them will matter less now will she do it probably not honestly I don't think she's super comfortable with the media I think her campaign views the media as kind of unnecessary though they won't say this because she's been doing really well in poll since she emerged as nominee so why do they need the media is there you know why risk it what do they gain from it I just think it would be a smart way to totally deal with this issue to diffuse it to make it just less of a thing less of of an event like tonight's interview is an event right it's a big deal capital b capital D make future interviews less of a big deal and I actually think it would Ur to her benefit but again she probably won't do it now speaking of doing things I ask you to do four things one subscribe to this channel two like this video three comment on this video and four tell 10 friends we're growing people I need you take care see you tomorrow
