you not entertained no not in the slightest I was more annoyed by that night inning um that's fair that's fair I I'll say this I was entertained but things that entertain me I can understand are going to be different than you reasons I was entertained was my level of wait for it Doug intriguement I was very intrigued today by bayy falter and what's maybe happening with the Pittsburgh Pirates that I think we'll talk about I'll set that aside a little bit here we'll talk about that later but I found this game to be uh Pleasant yeah it was fine until the ninth inning it was fine we we got the win it was cool right it it took up my entire afternoon before I got to go to work so there you go pass the time I guess thank you Ben sharington for allowing us to pass the time no but before we go any so as I was mentioning Cody bayy falter takes the mountain today and you know the one thing to talk about biley falter just to go back a little history we weren't very intrigued on biley falter when the trade happened last year yeah he comes in has faces the Miami Marlins in Miami right to start the season has that terrible first inning hey you know this is bayy fter we expected he's terrible why is he on the team let's move forward and he did something really like this whole entire season he's been fairly effective you know and again like from a number five starter you really can't ask for too much and today Cody he did have a no- hitter through six Innings he did and uh you know I was just you know mesmerized by his pitching as I usually am with bayy falter and it just got me thinking like I'm always asking you guys like hey should we make a bayy falter like highlight post like hey he went this many innings you know it wasn't it's not the it's never the prettiest outing but it's usually an outing that we needed yeah and I mean we always like no it's Bailey falter no need you're like no it's bayy falter who cares this guy has really been a key part of this rotation in my opinion because he gives us these solid outings I mean I was just thinking you know we got the Fanboys coming up and I don't know if we have a award for like a guy that just keeps things together a consistent guy almost a comeback player but not a comeback player a guy that you just didn't expect to be this important I don't know if we have an award for that and if we don't we should just make it the bayy falter award the guy that just comes in and surprises everyone and is someone who is consistent throughout the year the guy you thought that sucked but just somehow another perseveres and is actually pretty good at the end of the day exactly yeah I get that we could call it the Tyler [Laughter] award yeah yeah Ty award but but honestly honestly though like you are correct writing him off from day one I mean he looked terrible and that's giving him a lot of credit he looked terrible in spring training and then that first Miami start again it almost made you feel confident in yep we were right but I mean end of the day at this point in time he has a 420 erra on the season which includes you know that bumps some of the bumps that you know along the way in that Miami game um he gives you winnings like they talked about today five games where he's had seven plus innings in the start helps the bullpen you know today again he goes seven point one I felt like he he could have went he could have went more but I understand pulling him which is you know the the fine move but but again it gives you Innings provides mostly quality Innings like he he allows you to be in the game and again as a a fifth starter you really can't ask for much than that so right go ahead no I just I was agreeing with you yeah so I guess what I'm alluding to here and want to say is again he did have six no hit Innings until he did give up his first hit uh at the end of the day seveno winnings two hits three walks five strikeouts 17 whiffs this was something again when I talk about intriguing something that happened today we High whiffs you know bayy falter is not really the strikeout guy you know we we discussed when he throws that fast ball up and high and keeps it elevated you know he he plays off success but a lot lot of times too it's you know weak contact for biley falter today again it was a lot of swing and Miss stuff only five strikeouts to L that but you know he was keeping off balance the we hits were weak uh when they were allowed but one step further I one to go to this is what intrigued me Sunday Jim was on the postgame show and brought this up with Doug that you know Jared Jones did something different he threw a lot of curveballs now that was different he doesn't normally do that but the other thing about it was he threw it hard I think it was 2.7 miles per hour um in in velocity addition that that day so you know he's throwing the curveball more but he throwing it harder now bayy falter does throw the curveball today it wasn't like abnormally more you know than normal but his curveball today 3.6 miles an hour harder wow so when I talk about the Intriguing thing now I'm kind of like on like a little alert you know like what are the Pirates doing here this this is now two pitchers that have done something fundamentally different in the past week is this something organizational is this who's do you know who decided this this almost kind of reminds me like when Chris Archer came in after that trade then everyone started throwing a slider uh you know not to that degree but it's like now like like people are throwing the curveball harder why that's what I'm intrigued with yeah and I mean if if it's just one pitch then yeah what what is that but also it makes me think back to last year where we were in the last month of the Season there's a little better chance of us to make playoffs but the team just played harder you know pitchers were playing like oovo for example he is the example of a guy who put it all out there um and it didn't turn out great for him but maybe that's just it it's the last month of the season they want to end on their best stuff maybe that's it but I think you're on uh your your theory is better than my theory here maybe it's something organizationally that they're just like hey we have to throw these harder we need maybe it does it make it break harder if you're throwing it harder like does the break sooner later whatever um that's something they probably could figure out with their analytics but yeah I think it's something that could possibly you know make this rotation better especially with guys like a Bailey falter who isn't the star he's the fifth starter he's a guy who needs to build up his game a little bit to stick with there with the Joneses with the Kell and he's got to stick around and he's figuring out how to do that yeah like two things cross my mind here uh and for one we talked about Jared Jones he had 10 swings nine misses on it I mean it was not only was it different but it was super effective super effective like now it's like does he have an actual another weapon right the thing about Jared Jones is he has two pitches the fast ball and slider so it's like if he can incorporate that curveball as well and that could become a true weapon for him then man Sky a limit again with bayy falter a little bit different this is a pitch he has you know used in his Arsenal but if it's if it's fundamentally different and it's now more of a weapon so today not as not as Extreme as Jared Jones but six swings on it four widths so so again it was it was different it was very effective I'll be it every pitch he threw today was effective he had 10 whiffs on the SL four on the four seam uh he was just looking really good out there so it's like so it's part of it hey this is a new different pitch and it's working or is it you know it's the Miami Marlins Cody you might have threw a perfect two innings out there at least that that's the other cave caveat here is like it's not a good team that you're facing today they made a lot of uh dumb decisions today both defensively and on the base path there was that one where Billy cook threw out the guy at third guys should never have been running to third in the first place but thanks for making Billy cook look good you know um yeah it was the Marlins it kind of sucks that he has an outing like this because then it's like nobody's gonna take it as seriously but like you did you looked into the analytics of his pitching and saw that he's throwing his curveball harder that he got all these swings and misses on all pretty much all of his pitches today and I think this was a better outing than just the fact that he was facing Marlins right so so when I said who I had there's two things that came to mind the second one though is I go back we had a ws9 plus I want to say maybe a month and a half ago I don't know time Escapes Me we had Enos seras on we're talking about stuff plus you know and with him and getting his perspective on it and you know one thing that he did say and I don't remember where or what I'm gonna try to find it and now to clip it but you know he just he said that velocity is basically King on everything like if you just throw everything as hard as you can it it works and so so now like again that's what I'm kind of thinking about is this something that they're they're doing is this something that stands out I don't know again I don't know don't have answers yet but this is what intrigues me to finish out this year is this something that bayy falter and Jared Jones are gonna continue doing is this something we're gonna see other pitchers start doing I don't know but this is what I'm looking for for this season when it comes to to Pitchers but at any rate Dy falter yes through the curveball much harder today had success with it but again had success with everything as he pitched lights out uh fantastic start for him leaves out there three nothing um and yeah the Pirates offense did enough yeah to win it also wasn't a great pitching staff but I want to go back to Jim's comment here too because yes Jim you were right about the sweep and you wanted to say here that I said the the Mars good no what I did say was the bullpen is isn't too bad and you know what most of the runs in the series came from the starters just going to say yeah I I don't know I mean I I would have never thought they were gonna sweep honestly just because a Jim said something about it and B this team's been awful so yeah and C Jim said something about it right you gotta put that in there twice absolutely but they did they did like they swept the Marlins um and I also want to say this on the the tales of that right the Marlins being swept by the Pittsburgh Pirates it is September and since we mentioned about W and9 already let's bring up another one we had Alex stumon not too long ago who said that September was going to be a crucial month for Derek Shelton and his future they played well against the Cubs they just now swept the Marlins September has been looking pretty positive in the sense of wins and losses for the Pittsburgh Pirates and today dri Shelton has come out and said that he sees D Shelton being the manager of Ben Ben sherington said that Dereck can't say that about himself did I say Derek my bad Ben said Derek uh he fully expects Derrick Shelton to return for 2025 so take that for what it is as well hey you know what they also said Neil and you know [Music] um Clint sorry Neil and Clint were coming back and and that didn't happen also so uh I was waiting for you to bring up the Nesbit article yeah well there it is you said Neil and I was like is he talking about like AR Neil or like Neil Walker what where's he going with this right yeah so again I don't expect him to say anything much differently but today he did state that as the Pirates sweep the Marlins yeah I mean I sure it looks positive right I just I don't know how you bring the guy back I mean he I think he's just this is a stepping stone in his career right I don't think this was the place that Derrik Shelton was destined to have success at maybe he will on the next team or the team after that POS his first time being a manager in MLB in the MLB for for a team it's okay that he didn't take the Pirates to the promised land like that it's okay this is his first first managing job maybe he does it with the next one maybe with the one after that or maybe he never does it because he's exactly who he thought he was he's not a good manager well we'll find out and we'll see what happens this offseason but hopefully with that said I guess I will bring this up I learned something today Cody what I wasn't really up on my advertisement policies as far far as MLB is concerned that's right grant it probably because the Pirates ironically were rather late in this uh they you know they they just got the sheets patch what two months ago um yeah apparently the patch has to face the pitcher depending on what handed you are so Bailey falter is Left-Handed the sheets patch is on his right sleeve and for others that are right-handed it's on their left sleeve I learned that so I guess for anyone else that I want to share this information that you might not know or you probably all know as as Sheet's dunked on me today to tell me exactly why um there it is for you so good little info there so today you've learned that bayy falter throws the curveball harder and the the logo policies and I I actually noticed that earlier in the season I saw it on Martin Perez and he was sitting next to somebody and I was like why are wait like that's different why is that different but then I was just like you know it was a fleeting thought I was like whatever who cares but also but also the Pirates apparently aren't up on their advertising policies either I mean obviously with the mlbpa that all got figured out but they kind of screwed that screwed the pooch on that one I don't feel so embarrassed anymore right any who so yeah so we talked about bayy falter uh let's talk a little bit about this offense you know again early on it got it got going uh I think right away they had bases loaded O'Neal Cruz walks in a run you again that two nothing very early on that first inning they got right to the starting pitcher took him out um it was all early it was pretty much all early and again the bullpen came in Jim kept this team in check scoreless the rest of the way but there's some guys I want to talk about in this uh in this lineup now of course there is Brian Reynolds who had two hits today both doubles he is who he is he's good we don't need to go too deep into Brian Reynolds um you know Joey Bart got hit by a pitched he he took one like to the warning track he's been playing pretty good as well but a guy I want to talk about Nick Gonzalez he goes two for four today um he's a guy that you know I've talked and I think others on this that how he finishes this season is gonna be pretty big you know because he came up he was a spark plug you know he's he scored a lot of he drove in a lot of runs he was hitting rather well playing really good seconds and then it seemed as if he was really starting to fall off and you know some of that was masked because he had such a heart hot start but at the end of the day when he before went to the I I mean he was struggling rather mightily for quite a bit of time so you know when you're looking at 2025 who is Nick andales is he a guy that you can rely on you know give it to him it's his second Taste of MLB it's a little bit different season short sample size you know how's he going to finish his year is going to be a big you know a big thing if you're going to pencil him in for a second next year you think might want to look elsewhere um he's been hitting well he's been hitting well over I think 340 since his call up at this point in time going two for four today uh he's he's performing yeah and I I love Nick Gonzalez I think he's a great great second baseman for this squad I think he should be the guy that's penciled in and I don't think that he should worry about losing that second base spot on the starting lineup you know he's come up like you said the both of these stints this year he's come off to a hot start and yeah it'll pit her down a little bit here and there but I feel like that's just the nature of the game sometimes and plus it's his first real first season you know he's been up before for a little bit but this is the most he's played in the MLB so far his career I think this is just something that's going to come with the territory uh similarly to like what's going on with on Cruz like at the beginning of the year I know I was the biggest like this guy needs to figure it out but as the season goes on you see that he is figuring it out and I think they're both kind of in the same spot where they're both very talented very good at the plate and they're figuring it out as the season goes along um but yeah I I really think Gonzalez could be the future second baseman here for at least a couple years until we have that ability to find someone else or bring up Tamar Johnson or whatever what ever may happen but Gonzalez I don't think is a problem going forward into 2025 I think there are a lot bigger problems to worry about and that's basically why he would be there like you know he if you want to call it Patchwork it's Patchwork if you want to say he he's the guy that he's the guy but there are much worse situations going on with this team than to think about is Nick Gonzalez the second baseman for 2025 yeah yeah all all that is fair all that is fair and you make a good point about the Ono Cruz because we've talked about that I mean rookie is going to struggle he had 28 plate appearances last year in MLB wasn't good 63 weight to runs created plus but again he's a rookie he's struggling it is what it is you you expect that from rookies um I think the difference between Ono Cruz and Nick Gonzalez is Ono Cruz looked every bit of a a top prospect that he he has his struggles he has has things that you could see why he not he's not going to make it in Major League Baseball but you almost felt as if he's too good he's gonna at least be like an average we'll find out if he's a superstar if he's a star how good he is right Nick Gonzalez you're pretty much unsure for most of his tenure as a prospect so I guess the difference is you're gonna allow Cruz time to figure it out or Nick Gonzalez you were unsure anyways so if he's up here and he's not hitting you're not really that surprised so when he comes up here early on the year and he's just mashing he's looking really good it's really exciting however PP the braks take the step back it is his first taste I should say first first taste of the season right he's been playing better this year give him that but pitchers are going to start adjusting and when they start adjusting how's he going to like the cat and mouse game you know begins um and it seemed as if they adjusted and he was struggling so so again based off his Prospect status based on what he's done to this point of his career and he's doing at that point in time for me I wasn't ready to say hey Nick Gonzalez is the answer I still need to see something the season's still continuing you know at this at this rate he's a 90 weighted runs created plus he the second baseman playing really good defense at second also you know even with all this he's a one war player in just what is it 80 yeah 80 games played so I mean it's like a two- War over a full season time a two War player like you will will take that I just want to see how this season finishes to feel more comfortable and again so far he's done nothing but show you know what I'm here I can play so he's doing a fantastic job still yeah and I mean I know Nick Gonzalez has his uh critics because of how long it took him to develop coming out of college you know he had that potential of being like the one of the greatest hitters in Pirates history because he was such a great hitter in college right but it's it's professional baseball it's not amateur college you know it takes longer for some of these guys to figure it out and I think Nick Gonzalez has figured it out and I think he's been given the time to do so I think he was on a short leash though at the beginning of the season when they brought him up I think that would they were like hey you either have to do it now or you're not going to do it for us and he proved that he could do it and I I like that he's been able to take that type of pressure and perform yeah yeah so again Nick andalus had a big day today as well going uh getting two hits I also want to talk about Jared triolo it was two nothing he came up he's the one that took the starting Pitch Out basically you know made a three nothing game with that home run and you know he had two hits today as well um I got I got trolled a little bit by saying this a few days ago but and maybe the way I word it I could understand you know but I I I questioned it more not as a statement I said Jared triolo gonna end the season on a hot streak because he has been playing better um and again like that game when I tweeted I think he had like two hits and you know he has over 720 Ops uh since July first and you know as you heard the broadcast last night and I I think it's still about the same League average has been hovering like about around 711 713 right about there Ops wise so like he's been hitting above League average he's been above a League average hitter since July 1 um it's nothing to scream about trust me like I get that I'm not clapping and saying oh my God Jared Trill is a League average hitter holy hell look what we got cooking here but again it's been progressively getting better at this points League average you know like how's he going to finish the year it's almost one of those things like is he going to trick us you know the way he finishes it and then look back and say you know what the season wasn't all that terrible I don't know but I'd rather see the players be good than not right so far though again he has been hitting better today a home run again U that's something that we've talked about also like I don't understand how Jared triolo with that frame and like how he doesn't hit more home runs right he's been hitting a little bit more lately that's his eighth of the season um so yeah big day for Jared triolo as well yeah no it kind of feels like ever since I think it was Jim mostly was saying Jared triolo is not a major league baseball player since then triolo's had at least five home runs that's I think he has I think he has five home runs since July 1 I think that this today was the fifth it might have been the fourth or the fifth but either way that's look at Stats out of my backside how about and I'm sure we said it around it's probably around Fourth of July yeah probably if not sooner didn't say he was good I'm just saying yeah all I'm also saying here is I don't believe he is all that good either but if he can at least be a near League average hitter with that defense that has value on this team uh that's all we're asking for that's all we're asking for so he's he's been doing that essentially for two and a half months now yeah we'll take it you know when when you know a guy like krien Hayes is on the injured list he wasn't playing well to begin with at the plate at least you know when that guy who is supposed to be one of your franchise guys is gone it's nice to be able to insert a League average guy right so yeah yeah yeah outside of that again like the offense really wasn't there Reynolds had to two hits two doubles Nick Gonzalez had two hits and Jared Chilla had two hits and again that was that was basically your offense today it was enough um but I guess let's get down to bayy falter leaves the game hman comes in pitched good enough you know it didn't excite me Holderman it wasn't like I'm not I'm not ready to stamp anything on Holderman yet either I think the bigger news is what happened after that uh Bor was warming up were going to bedar to get the save here it's a three- nothing game they've already talked and said bednar's moved out of the position they're could have going to put him in lower leverage roles we've seen Dennis Santana you've seen Chapman get saves technically speaking they weren't pretty this is the first time since that that moment that David benar is warming up to come in to be the closure once again I want to hear your thoughts I mean I so going back to what we were saying earlier with bayy falter you're you're playing the Marlins so this is a spot where it would make sense to put Bednar back in that closer spot give him the work against a bad lineup try and get that confidence back now he comes in he just I don't know what it is like he had two strikeouts and he just he couldn't shut the door it didn't make sense to me um I know there's that video about him tipping his pitches I don't know if that's been corrected or not I also haven't watched that video yet that's on my watch list but like it was really deflating because I mostly deflating because I sat down on my computer it was like all right let's let's get on the post game and then boom he lets up a hit and I'm like what are we doing like I was so ready to just get on here talk about a smooth fantastic Pirates win sure and then and you have a blemish on it because bedar couldn't shut the door um it sucks we still won but I think if he can't do it against a lineup like the Marlins I think it's time to look for another spot for him that's why I wanted to hear your perspective on this um because I think most people that's their thought this is the his is his opportunity and this is why I did like it also you know what if you're going to ease him back into it what better time to do it than facing the Marlins you know it's not as if it's your it's the Yankees you're saying hey David get your job back here's Aaron judge Juan SoDo right it's hey David get your jaw back here is I don't know these guy's names actually just just go pitch right to me he looked better the results really weren't all that much better now of course you can factor in the Marlins like he should do better you know so so again like to me it's it's very incomplete also um I want to look back at to see it more I did watch the video and yes when you see that it's very enlightening we we teased it last night and again if you haven't looked up Trevor may he talks about how basically David bedar stuff is still all the same if not better than what it was last year you know so again like for him it's the same thing like he's just so confused on how he's getting lit up and it seems if he's tipping his pitches so I tried to watch today the glove seemed to be vertical it seemed to be high and tight mostly I would like to kind of look over that also just kind of see um but the first hit grounder gets right on the line right by Jared triolo right expect the batting average of 220 like this was it was a double right it was your it was your ikf signature double like a blooper something nothing hard hit it's not you got up there and just got blasted for a double Right Down the Line Jared trill's glove was there just didn't get to it strike out strike out okay we're looking good basketball's looking really good touching 99 getting swing of Misses then an error by ikf that's not his fault like we should be out this game I can't like should be out of this game the the inning should have been over the error the two strikeouts like that should have been inning over ikf doesn't get it um and actually think that's reversed I think the error came next actually my bad it was the error then the two strikeouts but regardless error happened which should have been an out two strikeouts raised it you're saying wow David bner looks looks back he finished it he did close it out like you mentioned he got the two strikeouts to finish it off that's not what happened though because of the air then he got that that single 94.6 miles an hour gets other single 88.6 like nothing was extremely hit hard ikf also like that one was out of his reach this isn't this is a tough play this is a tough play by no means this is not me trashing him this is just going back to what we were saying this is also not me trying to make an argument to put Ono Cruz back a shortstop because also Ono Cruz looks fantastic at center field right now awesome it's just that's what we're talking about ikf doesn't make that play he doesn't have the range doesn't have the length he doesn't make that play where other Short Stops can yeah I think David benar looked better today but I'm not here stamping like always back we're fine I still need you still need results results are what matter and is the Marlins but kind of got babied here as well right and I I agree with you I don't think he looked bad whatsoever I think you know just a couple unlucky things happened but like you said I'm not going to say oh he's back and I just want to go to what OG minow here said in theuh comments giving up or no that wasn't it right here I did not like Shelton pulling bedar today he had the margin to finish it he's had that margin before and he's lost the game so I'm like I was ecstatic that was the best decision Shelton's made in this later half of the season was pulling agree I I actually 100% I agree he was warming up beaks in that I mean usually this is bednar's inning it's yours to save or to lose more or less and that leash was very short it was you know what we're getting a beaks in right now you didn't do it we're going to win this game right and it had to be short because this I feel like this was the test right and he failed the test he maybe he didn't fail the test he got like a c minus or a C+ you know it it was a fine outing but he didn't get the job done but at that point when you have a game that you can win in the palm of your hand and you got what was it two guys on with a batter up this is the perfect spot for the bedar we've seen recently to give up a three-run shot and lose this game so I have no problem with what Shelton in I think it was the right call it was the right call for the development of bedar to be like hey I don't want you to get back down on yourself I want you to know that you had a good outing you had a little bad luck in the field with the error we'll get him next time you got two outs we'll bring in a guy to get the last one no problem with it whatsoever yep yeah I agree on that that is something I definitely appreciate with Shelton he allowed him the opportunity to get the save again but we're not going all the way yet you know I you don't have that trust and I'm perfectly cool with that Shelton played for the win so I do give him credit for that he had beaks warming up he didn't make that last out this run scored and he said I'm not I'm not entertaining this we are going to get this win beaks come in which also too like it's not that fully trust into beaks but no you make that move and the matchup was right so I I do appreciate that I do like that he did it um and I don't think this should like demoralize David benar even further because he got pulled out it just is what it is we're going to ease you into this and like bucko Mike did say here I don't know if I can say like it was a a fine outing by him you know again like there's there was positives in here but the results weren't there the successful outing wasn't there you can look in the positives and build on it I can say that but I'm definitely thrilled that they pulled bedar went for the win and security so beaks does shut it down Pirates win 3 to one right and I want to add like he's a professional he understands that the name of the game is winning you know and at the end of the day he knows that his teammates will back him up if he is taken out of a game so I don't think there's any shot to the confidence here I think you know they probably came into this game telling him like listen here's the situation we we want you to be better we're going to put you in a situation to be better and if we feel like we're if the situation is going to hurt you we're going to take you out of this game right yep so all in all to me it was an intriguing game there were some things I felt like I learned from it uh that I'm interested in to watch for the rest of the year again with the curve balls and the whole team and David bedar pirates win three to one today they get their 70th win on the season you know what time it is Cody sandwich time nailed it get
