Vaughn's Lively and garish sequel to The surprisingly winning kingsman the Secret Service my perhaps shameful disclosure is this I find Taran ederton the Compact and swaggering star of the films to be quite cute something about his impish good looks his characters shave to Suave Elisa doitt narrative the streak of sensitivity he's not afraid to let glimmer in the CLE lights yeah it works on me I'm only human which is all to say it's possible I like the kingsman movies more because it's a kick to watch my little movie Crush do his thing and less because they're you know worthy action adventure films I am willing to consider that possibility just as all critics should after all isn't that largely the point of casting impossibly good-looking actors so the audience is that much more drawn to a movie that much more easily one to its cause it's perhaps the oldest and most foundational Hollywood practice of them all so why bring it up now well because what surrounds Taran ederton in the kingsman movies is such a squaky mange of sloppy plot mechanics and potentially problematic stuff that my giddy appreciation for them has to be coming from somewhere compromised some someplace lower and baser than my high-minded critical eye right because I should hate the kingsman movies especially this new sequel opening September 22nd which is crass and hyperviolet and takes cheap deox maach of problem solving to an incoherent level Beyond even its predecessor surely then I enjoyed the film simply because I'm some sad Gro lusting after the film's lead that has to be it because what else is there to like the sequel begins with a jarring bang the entire Kingsman team wiped out save for exy ederton and his trusty Q stand in Merlin Mark Strong admirably committed to the bit who must then travel to America to seek the help of their borish counterparts the Statesman the means and methods of this cultural exchange strain not only legibility but entertainment the sillier things get the less anything matters the Golden Circle sets up world saving Stakes a poisoned supply of recreational drugs threatens to kill Millions unless a cartel queenpin Madwoman Julianne Moore having a good time gets her way and yet n nothing about the movie's Gambit has any real weight it's fine to make saving the world a lark James Bond used to do it before Sam Mendes got his self-serious hands on the PPK The Fast and Furious gang still manages the Golden Circle though is too busy being cheeky to bother creating any real sense of friction there's some pathos to be found throughout especially at the end but the film is largely a bloody bouncing gelatinous blob all lubed up with nowhere to really go all that blood does start to wear on one's moral capacity V's acrobatically filmed gun battles elastic squish squish bang bang Mr Toad's Wild rides are almost certainly too gleeful about all this murder and Mayhem the film's action is as as propulsively immediate as a video game fight sequence which is probably a bad thing this rendering of splattering head shot as exclamation point cartoons like in the first film The Golden circles mix of antic comedy and high body count doesn't sit right it's all wrong for the moment it made me interrogate why I was having fun an exercise that's entirely antithetical to the mission of a movie that really strenuously extended Elton John Cameo and all wants you to have fun and yet regrettably sheepishly I did have fun anyway I even chuckled a few times and I almost never laugh out loud at Movies unless it's home again sure because egerton sigh cuts a dashing figure with a healthy dose of humility and a killer smile sue me you'll probably win in critic Court in my defense I also like the dumb clumsy Golden Circle because several of its action scenes like an opening fight inside a London taxi are dizzily choreographed physics defying Thrills I liked it because Julian Moore as a sweetly purring super villain who kills people with a huge meat grinder is a sight to behold and because the film finds an unexpected I don't know niceness amid its brightly lit chaos the butt pun intended of an unseemly closing joke in the first film has afforded some measure of dignity in the second movie it's not perfect but it's something exy and his mentor Galahad Colin fth yes he's back have an almost homo erotic Rapport that the movie doesn't shy away from and we see egy cry on more than one occasion not something a lot of male action heroes are allowed to do on film vaugh has an odd but sincere affection for this world and it's curiously contagious but yes I recognize that there is also plenty to not like about the film including a mostly useless cameo from Channing Tatum a dull and wasted turn from hi Berry and one arbitrary and poorly shaped big final twist that confuses the movie's already confused politics The Kingsmen movies are not high art especially this sequel nor are they particularly witty schlock I understand why people were repulsed by the first movie and expect them to be even more so by this one if they even see it to which I say fair I get it and oh well all the more egy for me I suppose the franchise style Espionage Thriller has long been ripe for a sendup or a pasti or an update or whatever the hell people think it's ripe for the comic book Kings man provided the basis for 2015's kingsman the Secret Service a blockbuster sized action picture with ostensibly a cheeky attitude not unlike that of kickass also directed by Matthew vaugh for many that movie filled the sendup pasti E update Bill quite nicely instead of an official intelligence industry the secret agent outfit Kingsman operating out of a high-end tailor shop is a private ized law enforcement security service with a lot of high tech weaponry and convoluted cuttingedge Tech protocol the movie itself a sort of buildung Roman in which raw recruit egy Taran ederton is given a class conscious catapult to lethal gentlemenhood by older agent Harry Colin fth was sufficiently slick and energetic that you might not notice at first what a callous nihilistic smirk sexist retrograde pile of expensive garbage it was it even managed to make its last call anal sex joke seemed mildly Charming if you didn't think about it too much the true tell in the first film was the character of gazelle a Hench person of the main villain a woman whose prosthetic legs are sharp knife edges with these she can amputate limbs and even cut a man entirely in half these mutilations were depicted in a sterile near analgesic fashion the audience is meant to titter at the loss of life and limb delivered so efficiently with no pain no mess similar dismemberments and body havs are delivered in the sequel kingsman the Golden Circle it's violence for cowardly voyers who who want to make the people who annoy them just shut up in a way that's silent sterile and thoroughly humiliating to the victim but the movie was successful so now there's the sequel cooked up in the script Department by director vau and Jane Goldman if you think having a woman co-writing the screenplay will help in the iges gross sexism Department you are mistaken one of this movie's gags involves putting a tracker on a villain's Girlfriend by means of a form of sexual assault the current president of the United States once bragged about exy performs this act reluctantly we are meant to understand in part because he is now in a committed relationship with the Swedish princess who gifted him with anal sex in the first first movie Kingsmen the Golden Circle which finds the British tailor decimated and forced to join forces with a whiskey manufacturing us spy Network called Statesmen and featuring such personages as Channing Tatum Jeff Bridges and hie Barry is even longer than the first movie clocking in at 2 hours and 20 minutes or so as action-packed as the movie is it feels like it's 6 hours that's in part because the pacing is so spaven the movie lurches Twitchy from setpiece to set piece and spends inordinate amounts of time on shots of its Sharp Dressed characters slow motioning into the widescreen frames showing off accessories that will be sold to you by various companies in various Kingsman tie-ins all over the Internet a scene where in fth is packing up his things finds the actor taking special care to make sure the wooden Art of Shaving soap dish is turned to the camera lens in recent weeks I've received no less than a dozen emails from Art of Shaving all tied in to Kingsmen it also feels long because every bti or joke is dragged out long past its funniness or shock value the plot here just as reactionary in its way as that of the first one centers around a drug cartel the Golden Circle run out of a jungle presided over by Julianne Moore's Poppy I hope the producers of this movie paid more an inordinate amount of money because all she gives them in return for her fee is a passable Megan malali impersonation which is still less than they deserve Poppy's very rich and Powerful but also isolated and lonely so she's kidnapped Elton John and is forcing him to perform solely for her Elton John is played by himself this is funny at first then sour then gets beaten worse than a dead horse as Sir Elton is made a plot point and a climactic action sequence has played out over one of his more rockus numbers enough one thinks but enough does not exist in the philosophy of this movie well I suppose it does in one respect in kingsman the Secret Service villain Valentine played by Samuel L Jackson inv vagled various world leaders into going along with his Twisted save the Earth doomsday scheme he then implanted a device in their necks that unbeknownst to them could blow up up their heads if triggered one of the world leaders was meant to be taken for then President Barack Obama and at the movie's ending all the head exploding devices were made to go off and the audience was invited to GFA at the spectacle of Barack Obama's head blowing up this movie's plot hinges on tainted drugs that will kill potentially all the world substance abusers the scheme initiated by Moore's character is reported by Fox News none of whose correspondents are shown to have the sign of the taint because no one who works for Fox News does drugs as we know this movie also features a United States president but not a real one as the last film did this movie's president is white and played by Bruce Greenwood it's probably just a coincidence that this movie is produced by Fox it probably means nothing that this movie made by people who invited you to laugh at the violent death of the United States's first black president won't touch Donald Trump with a 10-ft pole they can't be racist right they cast hi Berry in this movie and Samuel L Jackson in the last they approve of black actors at least speaking of actors this is a movie that makes you wonder about them as a class can Colin fth Channing Tatum Mark Strong Jeff Bridges poppy delving Julianne Moore Michael gambin and so many others in the cast be themselves as Soul dead and life hating as this movie if not and it's probably or at least hopefully spends inordinate amounts of time on shots of its Sharp Dressed characters slow motioning into the widescreen frames showing off accessories that will be sold to you by various companies in various Kingsman tie-ins all over over the Internet a scene wherein fth is packing up his things finds the actor taking special care to make sure the wooden Art of Shaving soap dish is turned to the camera lens in recent weeks I've received no less than a dozen emails from Art of Shaving all tied in to kingsman it also feels long because every bit or joke is dragged out long past its funniness or shock offers the antidote if the president of the United States ends his country's War on Drugs and grants her cartel immunity from prosecution the president who is revealed to be corrupt decides to quarantine everyone affected intending to let them all die to put poppy out of business and rid the world of drug users whom he sees as criminals egy Harry and whiskey track Clara to the golden circles antidote Factory in the mountains of Italy egy steals an antidote sample which is was broken by whiskey during an ambush by the golden circles henchmen leading Harry to suspect him of working against them Harry shoots Whiskey in the head but exy believing Harry to be delusional as a result of his recovery saves him with nanotechnology as Charlie destroys the antidote Factory killing Clara for unwittingly betraying the Golden Circle till the calls exi in a manic State revealing she has been affected by the blue rash after taking drugs due to her stress over 's infidelity egy Harry and Merlin discover the location of Poppy's Hideout poppy land in Cambodia and fly there to steal the laptop which can deploy the drones carrying the antidote arriving at poppy land exie steps on a landmine but Merlin switches places with exie and sacrifices himself instead storming the lair exi kills Charlie while Harry destroys Poppy's robotic attack dogs with heal F and Chaw who been kidnapped by poppy they secure the laptop and inject poppy with a her own toxin infused heroin poppy gives them the laptop password in a drugged state but dies from dude about heroin whsy interrupts them before they can deploy the drones revealing that he wants die after his prant wife was killed in a robbery by meth addicts furthermore the elimination of all Prest of Statesmen whiskey to Skyrocket since people will depend much more on alcohol and his Statesman members rich exy and Harry fight and kill wh pushing him into an industrial rder then deploy Z Dron to release the antidote in Saving the affected victims throughout the world the president is impeached for conspiring to commit genocide against drug victims and Statesman purchases a distillery in Scotland to help rebuild Kingsman Statesman tech support specialist ginger ale is appointed to Whiskey's position egy Mary's princess Tilda becoming a prince of Sweden and Tequila takes an exchange assignment at Kingsman which acquires a new tailor shop in London cast Colin furth as Harry Hart agent Galahad Julianne Moore as poppy Adams Taran ederton as exy Unwin agent Galahad Mark Strong as HH Merlin hi Berry as ginger ale Pedro Pascal as Jack agent whiskey Edward holcroft as Charlie hesketh development near the release of Kingsmen the Secret Service Mark Miller and Matthew vaugh said a sequel would be possible if the first film was to perform well at the box office and Von expressed interest in returning to direct Von also noted that he had hoped to have fth back in the sequel though it was later stated that fth would not be returning on 29th of April 2015 Fox announced that a a sequel was in production but that it was unclear if vau would return due to his interest in directing a Flash Gordon film on 11 June 2015 vau told yahu that he had begun writing the script for the sequel and that he could return to direct in September 2015 Miller reiterated that the sequel was in development and that vaugh was looking for ways to to bring F back without sacrificing the Integrity of the story later that month The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that eagerton had also signed on for a new Robin Hood film which was then set to begin shooting in February 2016 egerton's schedule was thus in conflict with the kingsman sequel however in mid October it was confirmed that scheduling issues had been settled between both Studios Lionsgate began Robin Hood's production right after eagerton wrapped filming on kingsman the Golden Circle which began in May 2016 box office Kingsmen the Golden Circle grossed $1.2 million domestically United States and Canada and 31.7 million in other territories for a worldwide total of against a budget of $104 million domestically the film's opening weekend grossed 39 million in increase over the first installments $ 36.2 million debut had topped the box office overtaking two-time Defender it in its second weekend the film again surpassed it to retain top spot continuing an eventual run of five weeks in the top 10 at the box office critical response Kingsmen the Golden Circle receive generally mixed reviews on the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes 50% of 300 D critics reviews are positive with an average rating of 5.41 the website's consensus reads kingsman the Golden Circle offers more of everything that made its predecessor so much fun but lacks The Originals wild creative spark Metacritic which uses a weighted average assigned the film a score of 44 out of 100 based on 44 critics indicating mixed or average reviews audiences pulled by Cinema score gave the film an average grade of B+ on an A+ to f scale perhaps a confession an admission of a critical failing is in order before I get into a review of kingsman the Golden Circle Matthew Von's Lively and garish sequel to The surprisingly winning kingsman the Secret Service my perhaps shameful disclosures is this I find Taran ederton the Compact and swaggering star of the films to be quite cute something about his impish good looks his characters shave to Suave Elisa dittle narrative the streak of sensitivity he's not afraid to let glimmer in the CLE lights yeah it works on me I'm only human which is all to say it's possible I like the kingsman movies more because it's a kick to watch my little movie Crush do his thing and less because they're you know worthy action adventure films I am willing to consider that possibility just as all critics should after all isn't that largely the point of casting impossibly good-looking actors so the audience is that much more drawn to a movie that much more easily won to its cause it's perhaps the oldest and most foundational Hollywood practice of them all so why bring it up [Music] now well because what surrounds Taran ederton in the kingsman movies is such a squaky mange of sloppy plot mechanics and potentially problematic stuff that my giddy appreciation for them has to be coming from somewhere compromised someplace lower and baser than my high-minded critical eye right because I should hate the kingsman movies especially this new sequel opening September 22nd which is crass and hyperviolet and takes cheap deox maach of problem solving to an incoherent level Beyond even its predecessor surely then I enjoyed the film simply because I'm some sad Gro lusting after the film's lead that has to be it because what else is there to like the sequel begins with a jarring bang the entire Kingsman team wiped out save for exy ederton and his trusty Q stand in Merlin Mark Strong admirably committed to the bit who must then travel to America to seek the help of their borish counterparts the Statesmen the means and methods of this cultural exchange strain not only legibility but entertainment the sillier things get the less anything matters the Golden Circle sets up world saving Stakes a poison Supply supp LLY of recreational drugs threatens to kill Millions unless a cartel Queen pin Madwoman Julianne Moore having a good time gets her way and yet nothing about the movie's Gambit has any real weight it's fine to make saving the world a lar James Bond used to do it before Sam Mendes got his self-serious hands on the PPK The Fast and Furious gang still manages the Golden Circle though is too too busy being cheeky to bother creating any real sense of friction there's some pathos to be found throughout especially at the end but the film is largely a bloody bouncing gelatinous blob all lubed up with nowhere to really go all that blood does start to wear on one's moral capacity Von's acrobatically filmed gun battles elastic squish squish bang bang Mr Toad's Wild rides are almost certainly too gleeful about all this murder and Mayhem the film's action is as propulsively immediate as a video game fight sequence which is probably a bad thing this rendering of splattering head shot as exclamation point cartoons like in the first film The Golden circles mix of antic comedy and high body count doesn't sit right it's all wrong for the moment it made me interrogate why I was having fun an exercise that's entirely antithetical to the mission of a movie that really strenuously extended Elton John Cameo and all wants you to have fun and yet regrettably sheepishly I did have fun anyway I even chuckled a few times and I almost never laugh out loud at Movies unless it's home again sure because eagerton sigh cuts a dashing figure with a healthy dose of humility and a killer smile suei you'll probably win in critic Court in my defense I also like the dumb clumsy Golden Circle because several of its action scenes like an opening fight inside a London taxi are dizzily choreographed physics defying Thrills I liked it because Julianne Moore as a sweetly purring super villain who kills people with a huge meat grinder is a sight to behold and because the film finds an unexpected I don't know niceness amid its brightly lit chaos the butt pun intended of an unseemly closing joke in the first film has afforded some measure of dignity in the second movie it's not perfect but it's something exy and his mentor Galahad calling fth yes he's back have an almost homoerotic Rapport that the movie doesn't shy away from and we see exie cry on more than one occasion not something a lot of male action heroes are allowed to do on film vau has an odd but sincere affection for this world and it's curiously agous but yes I recognize that there is also plenty to not like about the film including a mostly useless Cameo from Channing Tatum a dull and wasted turn from Halle Berry and one arbitrary and poorly shaped big final twist that confuses the movie's already confused Politics the kingsman movies are not high art especially this sequel nor are they particularly witty schlock I understand why people were repulsed by the first movie and expect them to be even more so by this one if they even see it to which I say fair I get it and oh well all the more eggsy for me I suppose the franchise style Espionage Thriller has long been ripe for a sendup or a Pas or an update or whatever the hell people think it's ripe for the comic book Kingsman provided the basis for 2015's kingsman the Secret Service a blockbuster sized action picture with ostensibly a cheeky attitude not unlike that of kickass also directed by Matthew vaugh for many that movie filled the sendup pasti E update Bill quite nicely instead of an official intelligence industry the secret agent outfit Kingsman operating out of a high-end tayor shop is a privatized law enforcement security service with a lot of high-tech weaponry and convoluted cuttingedge Tech protocol the movie itself a sort of buildung Roman in which raw recruit egy Taran ederton is given a class conscious catapult to lethal gentleman Hood by older agent Harry Colin fth was sufficiently slick and energetic that you might not notice at first what a callous nihilistic smirky sexist retrograde pile of expensive garbage it was it even managed to make its last call anal sex joke seem mildly Charming if you didn't think about it too much the true tell in the first film was the character of gazelle a hinch person of the main villain a woman whose prosthetic legs are sharp knife edges with these she can amputate Limbs and even cut a man entirely in half these mutilations were depicted in a sterile near analgesic fashion the audience is meant to titter at the loss of life and limb delivered so efficiently with no pain no mess similar dis mment and body havs are delivered in the sequel Kingsmen the Golden Circle it's violence for cowardly voyers who want to make the people who annoy them just shut up in a way that's silent sterile and thoroughly humiliating to the victim but the movie was successful so now there's the sequel cooked up in the script Department by director vaugh and Jane Goldman if you think having a woman co-writing the screenplay will help in the ous gross sexism Department you are mistaken one of this movie's gags involves putting a tracker on a villain's Girlfriend by means of a form of sexual assault the current president of the United States once bragged about exie performs this act reluctantly We Are Men meant to understand in part because he is now in a committed relationship with the Swedish princess who gifted him with anal sex in the first movie Kingsmen the Golden Circle which finds the British tailor decimated and forced to join forces with a whiskey manufacturing us spy Network called Statesman and featuring such personages as Channing Tatum Jeff Bridges and hi Berry is even longer than the first movie clocking in at 2 hours and 20 minutes or so as action-packed as the movie is it feels like it's 6 hours that's in part because the pacing is so spaven the movie lurches Twitchy from set piece to set piece and spends inordinate amounts of time on shots of its Sharp Dressed characters slow motioning into the widescreen frames showing off accessories that will be sold to you by various companies in various Kingsman tie-ins all over the Internet a scene wherein fth is packing up his things finds the actor taking special care to make sure the wooden Art of Shaving soap dish is turned to the camera lens in recent weeks I've received no less than a dozen emails from Art of Shaving all tied in in to Kingsmen it also feels long because every bit or joke is dragged out long past its funniness or shock value the plot here just as reactionary in its way as that of the first one centers around a drug cartel the Golden Circle run out of a jungle presided over by Julian Moore's Poppy I hope the producers of this movie paid more an inordinate amount of money because all she gives them in return for her fee is a passible Megan malali impersonation which is still less than they deserve Poppy's very rich and Powerful but also isolated and lonely so she's kidnapped Elton John and is forcing him to perform solely for her Elton John is played by himself this is funny at first then sour then gets beaten worse and a dead horse aser Elton is made a plot point and a climactic action sequence is played out over one of his more rockus numbers enough one thinks but enough does not exist in the philosophy of this movie well I suppose it does in one respect in kingsman the Secret Service villain Valentine played by Samuel L Jackson inv vagled various world leaders into going along with his Twisted save the Earth doomsday scheme he then implanted a device in their necks that unbeknownst to them could blow up their heads if triggered one of the world leaders was meant to be taken for then President Barack Obama and at the movie's ending all the head exploding devices were made to go off and the audience was invited to gafa at the spectacle of Barack Obama's head blowing up this movie's plot hinges on tainted drugs that will kill
