ERS didn't believe in his long heralded quarterback anymore because of his age and an injury ERS wanted to lead the Colts into a new era with the prize Stanford Phenom Andrew Luck but Payton he wasn't ready to leave football quite yet he wanted to keep playing and he did Manning shattered and set League records as a bron and he even won a Super Bowl but it wasn't that easy in the championship season Manning only threw nine touchdowns yes Manning went from throwing 55 touchdowns in 2013 to only throwing nine in the entire regular season of 2015 the year he and the Broncos beat a prime Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50 that's a quick summary but here's the whole story of how good pton Manning was with the Broncos it all started back in free agency once was released four touchdowns to finish the season with 55 touchdown passes and the league record 5,477 passing yards breaking Drew Bree's mark by one yard his 450 completions were at the time tied for second most all time the Broncos scored an NFL record 66 points becoming the first team ever to Eclipse 600 points in a season it was a firework show all year from pton Manning and his receivers again dearius to the Super Bowl the first time they've been to it since 1998 when John Elway was QB in Super Bowl 48 the hype was surreal many consider Seattle's defense in 2013 one of the best in NFL history the Seahawks allowed just 14.4 points per game in the regular season the Broncos were by far the number one offense averaging 37.9 points per game and it was all because of Payton Manning Payton's Broncos were heavily favored to win they received the ball first and on the first play of the game a huge error took place the center snapped the ball early and over Payton's head and the Seahawks forced the Broncos number one ranked offense to overcome while the Broncos defense also struggled due to injuries Manning set a Super Bowl record with 30 four completions but the record setting offense did not record a first down until the second quarter did not score any points until the final seconds of the third quarter while Manning threw one touchdown pass and one successful two-point conversion he Broncos went seven straight quarters without scoring a touchdown on offense the Broncos were 4-2 in six games without Manning giving them an 11-4 record heading into the final week of the regular season Manning was listed as active for the week 17 regular season finale against the San Diego Chargers but for the first time since his freshman year at College he was listed as a backup in the third quarter with the Broncos down 13-7 Manning entered the game in relief for oswal who was intercepted twice and fumbled once he and the Broncos went on to beat the Chargers 27 to2 to secure the AFC West and earn the top seed in the AFC despite the Broncos 12-4 record and Manning's 8-2 record in games that he played in Manning had the worst season statistically of his career as he threw a career low nine touchdown passes and 17 interceptions in just 10 games and posted a quarterback rating of 67 .9 which was the lowest rating of his career and the first time he had a rating below 84 since his rookie season Manning's 59.8 completion percentage was the second lowest of his career only behind his rookie season Manning's 17 interceptions were second to Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles who threw 18 interceptions but started all 16 games the Broncos as the afc's number one seed earned home field advantage throughout the NFL playoffs the Broncos defeated the Steelers in the the divisional round 23-6 Manning was 21 of 37 for 222 with no touchdowns or interceptions in the win over the Steelers in the AFC Championship Game the Broncos hosted the defending Super Bowl champs the New England Patriots this was the 17th and ultimately final meeting between Manning and his longtime rival Tom Brady despite a late comeback attempt from the Patriots the Broncos won 20 to 18 to advance the Super Bowl 50 Payton played best when his team needed him most and had 176 passing yards two touchdowns and no interceptions in the win in Super Bowl 50 the script had flipped the Panthers finished the regular season with a 15 to1 record having the League's top offense led by the NFL's MVP Cam Newton in the NFC Championship Game Carolina whooped Carson Palmer and the Arizona Cardinals interception while being sacked five times scoring his only passing points with 3 minutes and 8 seconds left in the fourth quarter when he connected with wide receiver Benny Fowler for a two-point conversion which ended up being the final pass of his career Manning became the oldest starting quarterback to both play in and win a Super Bowl at age 39 until Tom Brady surpassed the record at age 41 in Super Bowl 53 and again at age 43 in Super Bowl 55 Manning also became the first quarterback to start in two Super Bowls each with multiple franchises under different head coaches each time and the first quarterback to lead two franchises to a Super Bowl victory the Victory gave Manning his 200th overall win including regular season and playoffs making him the starting quarterback with the most combined regular season and postseason wins in NFL history Manning announced his retirement after 18 seasons on March 7th 2016 the last words of his retirement speech were I fought a good fight I
