[Music] and welcome into the ballpark happy to have you with us the show has an NL East matchup it's the Washington Nationals going up against the Atlanta Braves first pitch coming your way next so just about set now and starting this one Charlie Morton well it hasn't been a great year so far in terms of RA but he's had some decent games and there have been some flashes of great if you will we'll see to if he's able to get ahead ofs and perhaps get some swings and misses put himself in a to bring that ra down because you know in the back of his mind Beyond The W he wants to have a run average all right ready to get underway and now the right fielder Alex call F back ourway and that's out of play next offering is in for a strike and he deals got him [Applause] [Applause] swinging of that late here's CJ Abrams to hit left hand batter weights foul ball there one out base is empty left hand hitter Waits swing and a pop off in foul ground near the fence and that's a foul ball also really good at B what I like guy his Bat stays in the zone for a long time gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches one there this guy's a fun guy to watch taking it bad he just battles up there he doesn't take a pitch off at all makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there you could tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away on the ground to the left Ella sends it across the first quick start here this evening two out top of the first here's Dave Martinez lineup for the Nationals this team Chris not one that gets a lot of production from hitting homers so they've got to find offense in other ways yeah boo hit sequencing is so important for this team you know getting that walk at the right time coming up with that next knock or extra base hit so that you can actually play to run if not then you see the record go in the direct opposite direction of where it could go so you know a team like this the good thing they're going to battle they're going to put the ball in play and hope that they can find those didn't take long to get a result for that atat pitch was in and off the pl so hard to do anything with the pitch in that location but somehow he got the barrel to it and hit it well pretty amazing and now they've got some speed on first so we'll see if they try to get him into motion next to hit Hebert Ruiz wood the runner at first with two gone and it's fouled away two outs and a swing in a miss and the inning is over Nationals leave one and now the Braves will get their first crack at it no score Major League Baseball is on the show and we're back and on the hill the Lefty Patrick Corbin and Chris he's a guy that gets better when things get tough yeah he's definitely had a struggle so this year as eved by that inflated whip but he's going to have to find a way to limit the base runners put his team in a position to win a ball game so we know he's prepared know competitor and we'll watch how he works in this one here's the center fielder Michael Harris and that's a strike out to short Abrams one up one down here's bran sers line up for the Braves Chris this is an offense that puts the bat on the ball tough outs pretty much throughout the lineup and they have fewer strikeouts than any other team in the league yeah boo and I I just remember as a player when you're going up against a club like this it keeps you on your toes all game long because you got to make plays for your pitcher on the defense and so an offense like that can really put some pressure on that defense so they can swing the bats put it in play but I also think if they run the bases hard it adds another element to their game now the one this to third whips it to Gallow and a couple of quick outs hey man four pitches two outs that is an excellent Pace two outs beses empty here's Marcelo Zuna you rewind and think back to those giants teams that won three World titles they were pretty good contact based teams obviously the Royals as well it feels like it's swinging back a little bit towards there's an advantage to having some hitters in your lineup that make contact and another ball wouldn't chase that time [Applause] two down three in a row yeah he's settling in and getting a feel for his pitches throwing where he wants to right now so we'll see how long he can keep this streak going the next to hit takes ball one next gets a chance to play his home games in truest Park it's a pretty neutral ball part the wi to the pitch and there's a foul ball pretty good pitch there to take a rip at he wants to get his arms extended he likes the ball away from him a little bit just not able to square it up the Lefty fires swing and a miss struck him out couldn't catch up to the heater batting here's really strong hitting former first round pick back in 2012 and there's strike one and that's in dir swings through that one out front that time and the right-hander deals and another ball the shift on Gallow hits right it else mean this is a great spot for a hitter to be in rander kicks deals on the ground left side six whips it acoss that's a good piece of right there the job was to move theun up and your team a chance to score the that's exactly what believe your teammates are with you after abs the ball as he stands in for the second time here comes a pitch and that one fouled off and a pitch F off foul man and that's a lead off double a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle we saw the numbers coming into the ball game but all he's trying to do at this point is help his team win so digging in Michael Harris grounded out his first time and takes low for ball one man it's second would chase that time backto back breaking pitches away you get the feeling as a hitter that the pitcher's afraid of you that he doesn't want to challenge you so I think the confidence level is raised right here just missed and a four pitch walk just came aart right there pitch walk and not to help swing out of the Z wh marfield up to the pl grounded out his first time up right through there for a strike he's looking for a strike out or a ball on the ground for a double play to sort of calm strike out right there and maybe a little controversial with the call I think he got a little bit of favor on the no question about it it's not exactly what you want to see in a big spot like that and I'm there's someing going from theg making it that wasn't his best call behind the today and the batter now Marcel Zuna the first pitch misses for ball one the last thing he wants is to hit the on the ground but I wouldn't expect many pitches up in the zone they'll be pitching for a dou play in this spot gella over it second Paris over at first with one away on the ground could be two ten to Second back to work swings through that one for strike one you know these Nationals as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the pl so many of their outs have come from weak contact on pitches they're chasing outside of the strike zone you can't do much of anything with those locations and that's been true again today this one popped up foul ground first Bas side Olen puts it away and there's one away and as a pitcher when the HS are swinging at everything you feel no need to challeng inside the zone you just keep working the corners and expanding that Strike Zone and Beyond and they just keep eating right out of your hand Ruiz stands in now and watches strike one all tied up top half of inning number four swinging a popup marfield gets under it and a couple of quick outs and now it's Luis Garcia struck out looking his first time misses the Zone one and right through there for a strike fourth inning underway no score and a swing he reallys the change up with that arm action and another ball and the righty deal spoils that one and it remains two and two and a pitch swings through that one it's a strike out offense held in check there and Midway in the fourth no score back at truest part John CH and Chris Singleton with you and leing off the bot of the fourth Matt Olen as the Lefty gets to work that's through there for a strike he's been known to jump all over the first pitch so that seems like a missed opportunity right there comes up empty that's strike two and ball one smash to Center way back and you can forget it home run flexus his power with that swing his 22 Homer of the year and they jump out front it's one nothing that one won't stay below the radar that made a lot of noise pitchly he saw exactly where that was going to be the challenge not get over anxious and come out of your swing and got all of [Applause] it lauriano comes up the hit one for one with a single so far fouled off he was late just got to delete it you give up that lead off home run go back to work focus on this next batter the pit definitely a swing and Miss slider down and in he finished that really well just couldn't get him to offer at [Applause] it that one misses two and one the why to kick the pitch foul off two and two nobody on nobody out we're here in the bottom of the four and he hits a ground ball right side and that's just foul and he deals got him and that's the first out nice recovery after giving up the h definitely a borderline pitch right there and he didn't look too convinced as he headed back to the Dugout those are tough ones that let go as a h but with the human umpire calling balls and Strikes it's always going to be on you to protect yourself with two strikes rips that one center field that's a base hit so a man aboard now with one away he was all over everything was on time and fluid in that swing got could get the barrel on and line it into center for the knock those always feel good Orlando Aria next up for the Braves that one finds the Zone it's and one he's been incredibly efficient in this one first pitch strike percentage over 70% that's well above League average and that's what's allowed him to pitch well up into this point at the belt and fires to the right side and he finds its way through for a hit quick throw back in lead Runner holds it second with one gone backto back Bas hits this just to go the a team and deep one down here's Shawn Murphy 0 for one he grounded out to First his last time swing and a miss as he chases that one darting out of the zone [Applause] on the ground right side it's through for hit coming home here's the throw to the pl it's offine the comes in it's two nothing that's three singles in a row just a simple ground ball the other way that had eyes on it man sometimes that's all you need to do just let the ball put the ball in play and just hope it finds a hole here's giella doubled his first time up ball one no strikes well he's just given up three straight hits and now behind in this count to this hitter might be a good time for somebody to call timeout maybe the pitching coach go out there and talk to him just a little bit two on one out that one hit to right no trouble here puts it away for the out and there's two away back to the top of the lineup and next for Atlanta Michael Harris he's over for one and that's off the Inside Edge ball one fast ball for a strike I know they've out to an early lead but you don't want to OPP gred two lock in with aity at May of there's a strike the pitch breaks his there's a soft liner hand grabs and throws and he beats it everyone nice there good throw very difficult to get anybody on that one as far as you had to go and throw you know no question so two down with marfield next up for the Braves and there's a ball next offering is in for a strike acity in the Washington Bullen djds getting loose out there number 48 warming up as well AR the runner at third Murphy on second Harris on a first with two now bounc to the left side Bas hit run in already now a second crosses the it's he was a little off balance he got the front fo down but was so great keep the hands back and allowed him still to get good to this big one there as he drives in a couple of RS so first and second with two outs Marcel Zuna next up for the Braves and that one just misses a ball and no strikes well a really rough inning out there on the and uh this is one of those where you learn a lot about a guy's toughness and his ability to turn the page and keep pressing forward the Lefty the one that's a base hit around third the throw in it's off the and he scores well drives in the run really good swing right there he got a pitch that he knew he could handle allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer the ball on the [Applause] screws here comes the skipper and we're going to see a pitching change in this spot Patrick Corbin will depart and as he heads off we'll step aside for a minute back with a new pitcher after this break DJ herds gets the call from the pen well he's been excellent against left-handed hitters this year and that's his first test this looks like a good move to the pin in terms of the matchup here is Matt Olen he's already homered in this game first pitch doesn't find the zone and it skips into dirt two outs couple of base runners at first and second two outs swung on beled that one's back there backone another Homer his second home run of the game it's eight nothing he's bringing the Thunder and a rainstorm how in the world did he manage to hit that Pitch Out knew whatch heed to on some other pitches in this was very patient and Pa off Bas is empty with two away Ramon laano next up for the Braves that one misses and that's ball one and here he comes and that is in for a strike and the count one and one to the right side oh great stop from his backside and it beats him what a play first it looks like making the stop is the hardest part but feeding to the pitcher on the move I think even tougher great job of hitting that moving Target they're going to be fired up in the Dugout ready now for the fifth inning here's the third Bas Jose tenna Jose tenna the right hand are back to work and a foul ball well every pitcher wants run support and having a lead is nice but it can be challenging for some pitchers I think keeping the mindset to attack instead of trying to be too fine and have too much finesse go after h and get quick outs ground ball left side Ella to First in time one up one down well he's doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball good execution here's Juan YZ struck out looking in his first at back the offense needs to start showing some fight against this starter he's doing his thing out there they're going to have to push back at some point and make him work a little bit harder he swings and fouls one off one down base is [Music] empty and strike two oh two righty to the plate that one's upstairs ball one and the count one and two the Nationals with a lot of ground to make up and we're at the top of the fifth keeps the back going with a foul ball [Music] gets a piece there we'll do it again here's a onew good eye on that spot it's a good take and another ball got him looking and he did not like the call two outs face is empty and now it's Joey Gallow for one he grounded out in his first it back swinging a foul straight back two down nobody on and it's even up would chase that time and there's a strike looking sharp just a strike away from five sh out Innings the two two that one is upstairs toay that F right there you're looking for something you see well that you can hand but you also have to keep the discipline so that you're not up pitches that are just a little too high three balls two strikes to count spoils a two strike pitch and he'll see another fouled off again and it remains three and two always having a tough time getting a pitch by him as a hitter you feel pretty confident that you're seeing different pitches still able to make some type of contact popped up to the left into foul sizes this one up brings it in and that'll do it Nationals goal quietly and they're on the short end of an eight nothing score back here in Atlanta we head to the bottom of the F now in for the Braves Adam duv that one fouled off plenty of offense in this one singy I guess you'd say kind of what we expected though well this was a game looking at the pitching matchup where you expected offense to score and not as sided as this um but yeah you definitely expected to see some offense coming up the L of the pitch and that's off the Inside Edge and the count is one and two checks his swing now it appeal to First and yes he offered at it Orlando AR will hit next pitches in there that's strike one swing and a ball hammered left field back there back G he'll touch them all and they add to their lead it's n nothing that's though he hit it pretty well it was anything but a sure thing to get out but today the conditions were right he got just enough of it and I think the Back Spin really helped that thing carry Murphy all set for the top of the six and stepping in is the Speedy number 30 you talk about Elite defensive players especially in the middle of the diamond and this guy is at the top of the list foul ball and you played behind guys and they loved having your speed out there defensively one of the things that we talk about is how much pitchers enjoy having those Elite Defenders behind them swinging a foul over the screen and back at a play H and the one thing about that is speed never goes in a slump and defense shouldn't either hitting wise you can struggle you can lose your mechanics but the thing that you can do consistently every single game is play great defense if you're talented in that way and this is what this guy does the line of the pitch and that's outside and another ball clearly down in this ball game and you can't look at the deficit and try to get it all back in one swing it's got to come wanted B at a time and even shrink it down smaller pitch to pitch make that guy on the M work to get you out that one misses so a lead off walk speaking of walks did you see anything special during your walk into the ballpark today know you like to take in all the surroundings I just love interacting with the people it's just fun to connect I mean as I was headed up to the booth one guy shouted at me make sure to say hi to Kenny and that one lifted in the air center field no trouble here puts it away for the out one away now the number two hitter CJ Abrams CJ ABS measures 6' 2 in 190 lb he's playing today in his home state of Georgia a short stop takes the ball ball to strike the pitch way out front for strike two well the hit shows the pitcher that he's willing to go after that pitch down in the zone so perhaps he'll come back to it still try to get that ground ball double play missed with a change up two and two a little bit low he should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three Hall hitter coming up if he's walked man it first one away got and there's two down and now up for Washington James Wood his home and away splits there just off the outside edge and that is ball one that's in for a strike the one one is fouled off the Braves up big in this one and we're the top half of the six foul ball left side he'll see another the one two stays alive kicks and fires got him swingy pulled the string on the change up make it six shutout innings for him out there now Braves nine and the Nationals nothing bottom of the six inning now the lead off spot for the Braves Michael Harris singing you got to appreciate a guy who's this good defensively I mean watching him track balls in the Outfield it is beautiful as he turns on the rubber with that good live arm delivers and that one fouled off so how much does his speed factor into his ability to go get it it's heartbreaking for the hitter because off the bat he thinks this Ball's going to get down because of that speed and the ability to make up so much ground he enters the picture and breaks a guy's heart one there there's one guy that I can think about Boo who started as a third baseman Alex Gordon and then became an elite perennial gold Glover out in left field for the Kansas City Royals but he's a guy when you watch him play you would imagine that's ever played in his life was the Outfield the pitch yeah some guys just have instincts right I mean that's the way it goes we talk about Larry Walker the Hall of Famer and his Instinct on the bases despite the fact that he didn't play a ton of baseball as a kid and that one is lifted in the air touches down that's first so now to the pl for Atlanta withfield one for three remember Mark Kat was a real good defensive outfielder good instincts not great speed edge of the zone for a strike going one yeah and I figured you would get Kat into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night that is true the O2 and a foul ball he stays alive nobody out runner at first got him swinging he chased the change up and there's one down he's locked in at the plate when he's using the whole field he was out front there just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track for the strike out and now it's the Braves DH Marcelo Zuna and that one Clips the corner no ball one strike hammers that one left field and forget it a two-run homer and they tack on to their lead it's 11 nothing that's their fourth home run of the game they can't stop and they home runs in this clearly each other at the with low 90s fast you have to live on the edges and hit your spots if you don't you'll get hit hard really good swing there patient waited for it was like BP all over again number 48 on the pitch here he last pitched two days ago Ardo Salazar Matt Olsen up to the plate corner and the rhander deals light drive base hit down the line and that's going to kick into the corner man aard on the lead off single that play looks routine def but with all of the little looks it can get real tricky down in the corner kept it to a long single nice defensive play and here is Luis Garcia who's over for two with a pair of strikeouts that one missed well the late off man gets on you want to minimize the threat by playing sound defense hopefully the pitcher can get a ball on the ground and they can roll him up for two here's a one one hit in the air center field Harris has a beat on it it in and there's one away now third B Jose ten now the third base Jose tenna he's been a great free agent side and first offer ring is fouled off just missed ball to strike and a foul ball clearly trying to stay back a little bit longer for that change up as he fouls that fast back righty delivers that one ran inside almost got him and the pitch knocks that one away and will'll do it again couldn't catch the low right that's of good changing speedit on theow and mixing up the speeds that wasn't the best location with the F but clearly that wasn't the pitch he was looking for at the pl either YZ in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike Ruiz off the First with two away on the ground right side they take the force out and that's the third out another score inning and now that's seven shut out frames it's the Braves 11 and the Nationals nothing and we're back bottom of the inning now in for the Braves Adam Duvall and the pitch down the line nobody can get there and it's the foul ball rander kick deals that one finds the zone and that's strike two and that's in the dirt the one two that one down the line and foul ball and a pitch wouldn't chase that time the next pitch misses and a Full Count Ki sandal popped up Ruiz in position and there's one down now batt the short stop Orlando R and now the short stop Orlando Aria he's already homered here in this one L and that's a base hit so they get a man a board with a one out single couldn't have timed it up any better than that nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line you know HS they so manys in the cages on going to the opp field and it doesn't always translate into the game but right there it did and he did it perfectly so here's Murphy now that one finds the corner it's own and one and downstairs one one the Braves up big in this one here the bottom of the seven next offering misses down and away that one pushed foul you could see he was trying to stay back long enough to handle the off speed pitch but just a little Tardy on The Fast and down on strikes he goes two down thir and it first and next for Atlanta Gio Ella first pitch misses and a foul ball [Music] next offering in there for a stke and it's one and two swing and a miss struck him out couldn't hit the fast at the knees one left for Atlanta but they still lead it 11 to nothing welcome back in a new arm on the mound to start the E Ronaldo Lopez and you know Bullpen guys can struggle sometimes when they're called upon with big leads because it just doesn't have the same intensity as a tight game so we'll see how sharp he is your mental toughness matters in situations like this as well here's Joey G joall and the pitch and first offering is fouled off Lopez is what you're looking for in a good reliever the ball stays in the ballpark it's so hard to square him up here's the 01 outside yeah he stays out of the middle and in pitches either at the bottom at the top on the edges and because of that you do get it in the air it's usually just a highfly ball and when it's down in the zone it's on the ground swings through that he's so consistent that the manager basically can look at it like he's got three outs sitting in his pocket that shortens the game struck him out without a swing he's got to be frustrated with that call well just a great job playing catch with the catcher exactly where the catcher set up is where he threw that pitch and probably fooled the Umpire a little bit because there was no budge at all and now the center fielder this one in the air Ella under it makes the grab and there's J when he takes the mound you feel like hey this in is wrapped or this ball game is over he's just that good and you can see in opposing hitters as well next to hit for the N Alex call this is a guy who's in the line of first and foremost because of what he contributes defensively Chris when you talk about preventing runs from being scored this guy is a big contributor in for a strike one they know when he comes in pretty much forget about it kind of reminds me of Mariano Rivera now one I was always told it's hard to take you off the field when you play really good defense especially at a premier position and that's what he does l drive that's a hit around first digging for two to the short stop at second but it pulls him off thease and in scor position with two away now at the plate CJ abrs over for three with two strikeouts and a ground out and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter the hitting's going to come around he's going to figure it out but right now his big asset is the way he plays the game on defense call at second with two down sliced hard but foul Lopez gets the swing of the Miss third out that ends the frame this one pretty well decided at this point home half of inning number eight straight ahead it's the Braves 11 and the Nationals nothing and welcome back to the ballpark bottom of the eighth here's the center fielder Michael Harris we talk about guys with good speed and definitely he has it but pushing the offense aside for just a second Chris it's the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most well he gets to balls that get by most people at that position just really impressive because there are certain times the ball comes off the bat automatically that team that hit it thinks that they've got a base hit or they may have extra bases and he just takes it away out towards left Center makes his way towards it long run nice grab and a quick out number one number 15 second Whit so now to the
