HERE WITH US NOW IS FORMER NASA ASTRONAUT JOSE HERNANDEZ. JOSE, WELCOME BACK. LET'S TALK ABOUT THIS GOOD MORNING AT THE AGENCY LEVEL REVIEW, NASA ADMINISTRATOR BILL NELSON SAID THIS WAS A FAITH THAT SAFEST OPTION. HERE'S WHAT HE HAD TO SAY. JUST FOR VIEWERS, I'LL TALK TO YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE. >> SPACE FLIGHT IS RISKY. EVEN AT IT'S SAFE SAFEST. AND EVEN AT ITS MOST ROUTINE. AND A TEST FLIGHT BY NATURE. IS NEITHER SAFE NORWOOD TEAM. A SO THE DECISION TO KEEP BUTCH AND SUNI ABOARD THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION. >> AND BRING THE BOEING STARLINER HOME. UNCREWED IS RESULT OF A COMMITMENT TO SAFETY. >> SO WE KNOW THIS IS STRICTLY FOR SAFETY REASONS. CAN WE TAKE A STEP BACK OR JOSE? CAN Y WALK US THROUGH HOW WE GOT FROM AN EIGHT-DAY MISSION TO NOW WHAT WILL LAST FOR 8 MONTHS GOING INTO 2025. >> CERTAINLY FIRST OF LET ME EMPHASIZE THAT THIS IS THE FIRST CREWED MISSION. SO IF TEST FLIGHT AND ORIGINAL 8 DAY MISSION, IF EVERYTHING WOULD HAVE WENT OUT, WENT WITHOUT A HITCH, THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN HOME BY NOW AND EVERYTHING WOULD HAVE BEEN HUNKY DORY. HOWEVER, SINCE THE FIRST FLIGHT WE HAD THESE LEAKS. WE HAD THESE THRUSTERS THAT OVERHEATED THAT CAUSE SOME LOSSES TO OVER BOGIN CONSTRICT PROPEL THEM FLOW, WHICH MEANS THE DEGRADATION OF PERFORMANCE OF OF THE THRUSTERS. AND THAT WAS JUST TOO MUCH OF A RISK BECAUSE THE THRUSTERS HAVE TO BE WORKING FLAWLESSLY TO POSITION THE CAP. SO AND THEN ANGLE SAYS THAT IT COMEMES IN AND IS PROTECTED BECAUSE OF IT COMES TO SHALLOW. IT COULD BOUNCE OFF THE ATMOSPHERE BECOMES TOO STEEP. IT OVER HEAT AND BURN UP. AND SO THAT'S JUST A WRIST. NASA DID NOT WANT TO TAKE. I DON'T THINK THE AEROSPACE COMMUNITY. I WAS AT ALL SURPRISED THAT THIS DECISION WAS MADE WITH THE EXCEPTION OF POSSIBLY BOEING. BUT I BUT I THINK IT'S THE RIGHT DECISION, OK? SO WE KNOW STICK. SPACEX IS STEPPING IN TO GET THESE ASTRONAUTS BACK TO EARTH. >> HERE'S ONE COMPLICATION. THE BOEING FLIGHT SUITS ARE NOT COMPATIBLE WITH THE SPACEX FLIGHT SUITS. WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN TO ENSURE THESE 2 ASTRONAUTS. WE'LL MAKE IT HOME SAFELY WITH THAT OBSTACLE AS WELL. YES, WELL, I DON'T BELIEVE THAT THEY SHOULD COME DOWN WITHOUT THE SPACES BECAUSE THE SPACES ON THEMSELVES, IT'S AN ENVIRONMENT SUCH THAT IF YOU HAVE A CABIN DEPRESSURIZAATION, YOU WL STILL BE OK, SO. >> MYUSPICION IS THAT THEY WILL PROBABLY ON THEIR RESUPPLY MISSIONS, SEND SOME SPACES THAT ARE COMPATIBLE WITH SPACE X AND THEY CAN COME HOME IN NOT IN FEBRUARY, ON THE SPACEX DRAGON CAPSULE. UNFORTUNATELY, THE MAIN COMPETITION, A BOY. >> AS I WANT TO TALK ABOUT THESE 2 ASTRONAUTS, WHEN YOU TALK TO US BEFORE, I KNOW ASTRONAUTS TRAIN PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY FOR PROBLEMS JUST LIKE THIS ONE. CAN YOU TALK TO ME ABOUT THE CONCERNS OF CONSUMABLES AND HEALTH CONCERNS NOW WITH 2 EXTRA ASTRONAUTS ON BOARD THE STATION FOR AN EXTRA 8 MONTHS. >> OK, WELL, FIRST OF CONSUMABLES ARE NOT AN ISSUE THAT THIS SPACE STATION ALWAYS HAS EXTRA FOOD AND WATER FOR SITUATIONS SUCH AS THIS. IF THE CREW NEEDS TO STAY LONGER THEY WERE ORIGINALLY SCHEDULED FOR NOW, THEY'RE ADDING 2 PEOPLE TO THE CREW. SO THAT'S SOMETHING SIMILAR. AND THEN WE HAVE RESUPPLY MISSIONS THAT BRINGS THE THE THE THE FOOD AND WATER AND CLOTHING OVER. SO THAT'S NOT A PROBLEM. NOW, WHATEVER THEY CAN DO FOR THE NEXT 6 MONTHS BECAUSE THEY'RE GOING TO BE THEIR COATS TOTAL OF 8 MONTHS. WELL, THEN ADD THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION IS IS A ARE READING NATIONAL LABORATORY. THERE'S PLENTY OF SCIENCE TO CONDUCT. THE'S A LOT MORE WORK THAN THE ORIGINAL 6 INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION. ASTRONAUTS ARE THERE TO DO SO. THEY'RE GOING TO BE A WELCOME SIGHT. THEY'RE GOING TO BE VERY BUSY. AND SO THAT'S NOT AN ISSUE EITHER. NOW THE PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECT. WELL, YOU KNOW, THESE GUYS ARE STRONG THEM UNNECESSARY. LETS FOLKS THAT ARE MENTALLY STRONG AND THEIR PROFESSIONAL. SO THEY'LL COME OUT OF IT WITH FLYING COLORS. BUT YOU ALSO GOT TO RECOGNIZE THAT, YES, THERE IS SOME LEVEL OF DISAPPOINTMENT BECAUSE I'M SURE BOTH A SUNNY AND BUSH HAD PLANS FOR THE NEXT MONTH OR THE REST OF THE SUMMER OR FORT THANKSGIVING OR CHRISTMAS. SO THERE IS SOME LEVEL OF DISAPPOINTMENT. BUT THESE GUYS ARE TRAINED PROFESSIONALS AND AND THEY'LL COME THROUGH BY FINE AND WE'LL SEE HIM HOME AND FEBRUARY. >> I WANT TO ASK YOU ABOUT THE
