BREAKING NEWS: POLICE CHASE ENDS IN DEATH FOR THE OFFICER AND DRIVER OF ANOTHER CAR DURING CRASH

[Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] hello hello everyone this is Pinky with pink Global thank you all for being here tonight with me I uh have a story that I need to get out um today tonight uh it's a sad story but I do need to get this out okay let me just say everything is a pledge this is my opinion my opinion only and this video is made for educational purposes only okay um let me just say before that out of the way and the story I'm going to bring to you uh today I'm going to go ahead and put up the graphic uh warning for the graphic content uh images or content may be disturbing to some so I do want to put that up okay that's my trigger warning all right um what we're going to be discussing or talking about today the story is a police chase that ends in the death of the officer and the uh a driver of the uh another car during the crash okay Witnesses uh saw it they did their best to try to help up um the people that was inside the a cars but they wasn't able to um get the Flames under control this is a San Diego Police Officer okay and I'm going to go ahead and bring you the story now so I do want to say uh a trigger warning and today is a AUST 28 which is on today is Wednesday guys and this is new and fresh okay so the information is going to be coming uh the video that I'm going to be showing you it's from credit goes to NBC 7 San Diego okay uh with uh Alex Rivier is the um person that would be she's the [Music] reporter okay and I just want to make sure everyone knows it is a trigger warning all right here we go guys I'm going to go ahead and uh oh let me just started from the very beginning here we go so in our reporting Chief wal clearly said that the officers inside the engulfed Cruisers did not start the high-speed chase but we know the suspects slammed into them just seconds after a supervisor had called that chase off n bc7 investigates reporter Alexis Rivas has been reading through the police department's policy on car chases and joins us now with some perspective on that Alexis yeah so look when it comes to last night's deadly crash there are still just too many details missing about how that police cruiser wound up in the path of the suspect's car but here's what we were able to dig up by the department policy so once a field supervisor orders officers to stop chasing a car that's immediate not only must officers fully abandon any Chase they're also not supposed to Trail or even follow the suspect but officers don't have to wait for a supervisor to stop chasing at all times it's the officers behind the wheel that are responsible for ending it if they feel it's just too dangerous they should continually evaluate the risk of death injury or property damage and balance all of that risk with the seriousness of the suspected crime police are not allowed to drive on the wrong side of a divided Road and that's with very few exceptions and generally officers cannot use their cars to box in Ram or bump a suspect's car unless they have supervisor approval and an officer can only deploy Stop Sticks if dispatchers know about it and can relay their location so when can police start a Chase in the first place in San Diego an officer just needs probable cause that a driver or a passenger committed an infraction a misdemeanor or felony and that's where San Diego's policy really differs from other cities in places like Dallas Philly and Phoenix for example police can't chase suspects for misdemeanors but here in San Diego officers can chase drivers for things as minor as a traffic ticket and the police chief said that's how last night's Chase began failure to yield to a traffic ticket for a speeding scpd's policy explicitly States officers should not assume everybody who flees from police or refuses to is a serious criminal suspect often it says ending a Chase is the most appropriate decision back to you Mark and Katherine Alexis thank you and San Diego's Pursuit policy you might remember this it recently came under scrutiny after a high-speed chase ended with the death of two young bystanders among a list of changes recommended by the city's independent police review commission prohibit all car chases except for those involving violent felonies it's never been e thank you guys uh that was the uh first video that I wanted to show you since uh they was going into the um the chase policy when a police officer can chase uh saw a Chase of a suspect in another car so um now we're going to look at it [Music] from uh another lens okay okay just give me one second oh this video here um let me just get it up so you all can see it and this is them um they're holding a a conference police conference okay I'm just trying to make sure I get it and this uh information here is coming from NBC anything I'm going to go ahead and start the video guys um this is the San Diego officer and Driver of the car that triggered uh Chase died I mean un was UN alived in the crash all right here we go I think every police officer and every Deputy I think every police officer and every deputy on a day like today goes through a reckoning we all know what we are signing up for we all know the hazards in in the dangers of this job but it's days like today that are a very real reminder of just how dangerous the job is I'd like to announce uh the names of the officers that were involved last night first the officer that we lost it's officer Austin matchar he's a five and a half year veteran in San Diego Police Department he's a San Diego kid uh Austin was a the kind of guy you want on your team as he was athletic he was a competitor he had a passion for training he was at one of our field training officers in fact his partner last night was his trainee back in 2023 you okay guys thanks for
