shortly that game about to start meanwhile Arizona will be at number one ranked Washington later today Arizona one of the better Road teams in college football boo cook what about the Washington huskys number one ranked team in college football three first downs last week against Oregon Jim they seem to think at Washington doesn't deserve to be number one because they win a lot of games on defense defense is is part of football except with the Houston Oilers Washington deserves to be number one if Washington were in Chicago located outside of Chicago or outside of New York City it everybody would say what a great great team this is so they happen to be in Seattle Washington if it wins every game wins the Rose Bowl should be national champs of course uh if Washington were located near Chicago in New York City all those kids who like to hunt and fish wouldn't be going to school there anyway well that that might be true but Don James would find somebody to win even if it were you and me in the in the backfield one of the more effective coaches in college one of the best coaches in football all football if he went in the NFL he would be in the Super Bowl within three years well there's a statement all right we'll be back at halftime with a close examination of the circumstances surrounding Jerry fa at Notre Dame and also of course scores of all the games that are sun has finally come out after seemingly an endless period of rain both teams that practices curtail this week but are in top shape as we get set for a great rivalry the SMU Mustangs coming in with a mark of 4-1 overall the Texas Longhorns 40 and one meeting at Memorial Stadium in Austin stay with us Monday on call The Glory the sarx make headlines and the publicity tears them apart do you agree college football from Memorial Stadium in Austin Texas the SMU Mustangs take on the Texas [Music] Longhorns this ABC Sports exclusive has been brought to you by Chevrolet who invites you to see today look on and right now the SMU Mustangs come out of the tunnel and out onto the artificial surface a surface that is pretty dry right now despite a couple of weeks of rain it drains very well the sun has come out they tell us no more threat of rain today so good conditions for this one as Bobby Collins brings his SMU Mustangs to town they came up yesterday on a bus from Dallas actually came down if you look at it geographically they're hoping to come back up though as far as their record is concerned because SMU started the season with four consecutive victories and if you go back to the first game of the 1981 season and take it from that point until this point SMU has the best record in college football in terms of winning percentage but last week they might have been looking ahead they played a soft schedule to that point they had to come from behind the week before to beat Baylor and then all of a sudden they got caught short by Houston as Houston took a big early lead and SMU was not able to catch them and thus they come in with a mark of four and one and really as far as SMU is concerned they have their backs to the wall because chances are you are not going to win the Southwest Conference with two losses thus they already have won and they have to look to go undefeated the rest of the way if they truly hope to be in the Cotton Bowl for a New Year's Day appearance Bobby Collins tremendous success in taking over from Ron Meyer who as you know was fired this week as the head coach of the New England Patriots so that's basically the story as far as SMU is concerned and as I turned out to Lee grup will be working in the game with me SMU in Texas it's a rivalry you have covered before what makes it special well it's a storied rivalry Alan you know it really transcends regionalism even though it has a very strong Regional flavor and I think of all the teams that I have covered in the college football that maybe Texas has as many Traditions as any team and and one of those Traditions is winning consistently here in Memorial stadium and uh as this graphic clearly illustrates you can see that dating back to 1968 that the Longhorns have been virtually unbeatable on their home turf however one team that has been consistently good here has been the SMU Mustangs and particularly in recent years they have been undaunted by what is known as the Austin intimidation Factor they have won two of the last four years and of course the man who will be leading the Mustangs today is someone you just talked about Bobby Collins is a former split te quarterback in his college days at Mississippi State where he played for the great Daryl Royal there and on the other side it'll be Fred akres for the University of Texas and of course Fred was a former quarterback himself playing for our colleague Frank BRS at the University of Arkansas now both of these men are essentially fundamentalists but uh from time to time they will also be innovators they will show you a few new wrinkles some Gadget plays and I think we're going to see a little bit of everything today because both of them know that a lot is on the line it's that kind of day well these two teams have played very exciting games over the last four years as you say it's very infrequent that an opponent comes into Austin and wins but SMU has accomplished that an 80 and an 82 and no team has defeated Texas three consecutive times here since SMU did it back in 1936 1938 1940 you turned it around of course as far as Texas is concerned and they're ready to approach right now they beaten SMU up in Texas stadium their last two appearances there now the response for the longhorn as they come out on the field at Memorial Stadium the Texas longor is not only looking for a conference Championship but Freddy acres in a year in which he lost a lot of talent 18 Longhorns were drafted by the fros last year he's looking for a national championship well he told us that initially that he couldn't understand why his team was rated so highly uh however he said that this has been one of the most satisfying ing teams that he has ever coached because they've been the kind of team that will just kind of scratch and Claw and second effort you all over the field and it's given him more satisfaction maybe than any team that he has ever coached other teams maybe have had more talent but this is a team that he feels is a very close nit group and uh and very much of a team that will hang together and find a way to beat you wouldn't it be ironic if he won his first national championship with a team not as talented as some of those he's had in the past right now working the sidelines with us let's get a word from Lyn swan your thoughts swanie you've already indicated the importance of this great matchup between SMU and Texas both coaches have indicated it's going to be a dog fight but one of the great indicators that it will be a tough ball game is the pregame warm-up both teams came out in a very intense warm-up receivers were making great catches the running backs were running making sharp Crisp Cuts and the offensive and defensive lines well there was as much contact going on in pregame warm-up as I've seen in many football games it's it's history it's tradition and I think these two ball clubs are going to be a fine example of the 64e Rivalry between these two ball clubs Al definitely would agree with you ly you can change the names and the numbers and you can change the weather but the Rivalry is the same good one in the Southwest Conference as SMU meets Texas the kickoff coming right up from Austin this is today's Chevrolet come on in Take the Wheel start it up get the peel of the road and roll on straight ahead on your own Financial Network trust us to make it work for you Memorial Stadium in Austin Texas the Longhorns coming in ranked second in one wire service pole and third in the other this would have been a game featuring two teams unquestionably in the top 10 had not Houston upset SMU last week but perhaps the Mustangs looking ahead looking past Houston whatever Houston is on top in the Southwest Conference 3 and0 so while a lot of people think the winner of this game will wind up in Dallas New Year's Day in the Contin ball Houston and TCU have other ideas Kobe Morrison has dropped back deep he's the man in the middle the middle of three for SMU standing at the goal line as SMU won the toss and elected to receive the breeze normally at smu's back as you look at Ward the place kicker Jeff Ward for the University of Texas but right now no wind to speak of just a very light Breeze even though that graphic illustrates 10 to 15 mph it has diminished the temperature is 71 Dees humidity is dropping we had rain yesterday rain this morning a look there at the flags very good conditions and we're underway Texas and SMU in Austin Morrison a yard deep to run it out to the 1015 and up ended at the 18 yd line for SMU they go with Don King good passer Reggie dupart he'll alternate with Jeff Atkins Gary hashway is the fullback he blocks a lot runs rarely Rod Mars is an exceptional wide out and Jeffrey Jacobs is on the other side last week moris was shut out he didn't catch a pass in the game against Houston that was the first time that had happened in his two years snapping a street of 17 consecutive games of the reception first and 10 with Mars in motion from the 17 yd line as king turns and dupar trips might have tripped on King's foot in any event he loses a yard or two as you look at the men up front Albert Reese 236 Dale helr out of Arizona 282 Richards is listed at 300 lb he's a freshman Chris Jackson is the center Andrew Campbell at 272 lb and Roy Dunn at 271 it is a tall and very big offensive line Second down and 13 and it's King on the option and keeping and moving out to the 19 yd line Don King a junior out of Dallas as you look at the Texas defensive line they play play the basic 4-3 mckenny the great is the big man up front for them number 99 their linebackers probably are the strength of the defense with alard Edwards and James and in the secondary when you watch Jerry gray you're watching perhaps the best free safety in America he's number two and he's with a lot of youngsters back there they play manto man but he does a lot of ring if you look at Fred akres it's third down and eight from the 19 yd line King rolling and throwing and moris drops the ball and that's something that's happened quite a bit this season despite moris being an outstanding receiver Tony Tillman covering on the play his receivers have dropped a lot of balls otherwise King's mark would be up near 70% in terms of completions they estimate that 11 sure passes have been dropped coming into today's game so that would make drop number 12 on the year Dodge carner to kick getting it away and it's a beauty bounes at the 27 yd line takes a good Mustang back B and this one rolls out of Bounds at the 11 yd line Dodge carer The Freshman with a 71 yd punt it's Todd Dodge the quarterback Terry or is the fullback and the Freshman Kevin Nelson is the tailback Bill booy Bryant is a great round Runner and Brent Duhan was a high school teammate of Todd Dodgers it's questionable as to how much Duan will play today he at sasis of the thief and that's limited his playing time in fact he did not dress out yesterday so we'll have to wait and see as to how much Duhan can get into the game today it is officially a 70 yd putt to pin Texas back at the 11 yd line fumble and a fumble on the first play recovered by Todd Dodge fumbling something that has happened a lot to Texas in the last his couple of weeks simply because of the weather they played rainstorms in their last two games William Harris is a very good tight end and you've got John Stewart as you look at the offensive line Brian Chester at 262 they made a change with steel Hammer moving in at Center and Greg ryot going to left guard the change was moving chilon who had been a tackle had gone to Center back to tackle so the human Coke machine at close to 300 lb has moved over little swing pass and buried at the five is Kevin Nelson so the must angs capitalizing on that great punt have pinned Texas even deeper the SMU defensive line Jerry ball is the man in the middle he's quite a character the nose guard Anderson Briggs case and Beverly is their best linebacker on the outside Anthony Beverly and the secondary Jones Phillips Brooks and green green intercepted six of Todd Dodgers passes when the two faced each other in high school third down close to 16 what a draw and a gets him out of the shadow of the goal line anyway or or rather or takes it out to the 15 yd line and that will enable Texas to at least have some breathing room as they'll punning away Terry or had a great day against Penn State recently he came here highly recruited and highly heralded and was thought to be the had the potential possibly to be another Earl Campbell I think that's overstating it by quite a ways but he has shown some great potential at times who could have been the other Earl Campbell is really Edwin Simmons AB Simmons has not played good freshman season and surgery on both knees telch the barefooted kicker hits one out of Bounds at the 43 of SMU so the ponies will take over near Midfield after each team has had a possession and there's no score in atin who says you can't have it all who says you can love your work and leave it to who says you can't taste it all who has had tremendous success since taking over for Ron Meyer at SMU before that he was at Southern Mississippi and helped develop that school into a seminal power one of his players there of course was Reggie Coler he himself a former quarterback having played for darl Royal at Mississippi State he was an old split T option quarterback back in the 50s the numers on Don King ninth ranked mination he's thrown though 90 times only 90 times in five games that's 18 for outing and he rolls to his left and is dragged down at the 46 yd line tackle made by Ty Allard number 48 a 63 junr 233 Pounder from Houston who figures to be in on a lot of tackles he's coming back after shoulder surgery in the spring he's one of three good linebackers in that 4-3 alignment for Texas and the first penalty of the game is a hold called against Texas referee today we can tell you is Joe Thomas and the rest of the crew Bill anger Don Brown Bobby Brooks Ron Underwood and Jim Evans still discussing it he appeared to Signal against Texas and yet there's gray involved now in the discussion and still they're trying to figure out as to whom will be marched off and it is against the long horns they will accept the penalty use the defense still first down still first down and it's first down and five now with the ball out at the 49 yd line just the start of things with the sun shining brightly for the first time in quite some time in Austin Morrison and Atkins are the running backs now with Atkins the tail back and King handing it to Morrison an infrequently used fullback freshman out of Dallas we say infrequent because they have a tail back tan those of you who follow SMU and football in this area know that Atkins and dupart are the main men and they'll carry the ball 90 to 95% of the time they are a tandem known as Pony Express Roman numeral 2 Roman numeral one of course Dickerson and James the most uh probably the best tailback tandem in col football history second down and two from the 48 yd line and it's Atkins picking up the first down as he gets close to the 46 yd line Jeff Atkins sopor makes his all in for wor his fandom mate Reggie dupart Jor from New Orleans Louisiana so Collins has both of those men coming back next year along with Don King who's a junr d is a little niftier Atkins is more of a bull they're looking for Atkins to have a good game though this year dupart has the better numbers and has played much better than Atkins to this point but Collins still has a lot of confidence in that and here he is with the ball again and the Texas defense bottles him up at the 44 yd line gain of two Ty Allard and Steven brags number six in on the stop it'll be second down and eight that's a good play for them out of the eye formation a count or misdirection play Dickerson and James both used that very effectively when they were here now Atkins goes out something you'll see very often cins believing in the fresh back Theory Atkins carrying three times and so back in is dupard number 21 a tailback on second down at eight pitches back to dupard who breaks a tackle behind the line and turns it into a game getting to the 40 yd line Allard and Hilman making the tackle and it will set up third down and four the option play is still very effective for the ponies but not as effective when Lance Melaney was here I think Lance Melaney was the best option quarterback I have ever seen no one had such precise timing on the pitch out as did Lance Melaney Don King may be a better passer better Runner but nobody did it better than Lance on the option third and four SMU at the Texas 40 yd line King rolling tackled at the 49 James mckenny number 87 gets credit for the sack that will force another SMU punt with a line of scrimmage the Texas 48 yd line Carter this time will try to angle it if he can his last pick was 70 yds eight aiming for the far side but instead it comes straight down the middle and is fielded at the 17 yd line by Jerry gray thus Texas will take over there with 827 remaining in the first quarter no score sodium can turn up where you least expect it even in your ant acid tablet looking for an ant acid without sodium Tums is burrows of the Big Apple defending Champions Ron Dixon grites plus thousands more the New York City Marathon live tomorrow on [Music] ABC well that's what happens to after a night on six Street in Austin we were there why you talk about the color in the pageantry of college football Memorial Stadium in Austin where the Texas Longhorns and the SMU Mustangs are scoreless as we approach the Midway point of the first period in Texas on its second possession from the 17 yd line it's Kevin Nelson carrying out to the 21 and the longhorn ground game has left a little something to be designed Nelson is a pretty good one he's a freshman he was originally going to be a wide receiver but they've had a lot of problems with injuries of course all of this would have been solved had Edwin Simmons been healthy but instead they've been forced to go with Nelson and Terry or and Jerome Johnson and while they have some pretty good backs nobody has really taking charge back there and Rob Morell was moved from quarterback to tailback second and seven from the 21 yd line and up the middle goes Nelson carries out to the 27 it's going to be just shy of the first down but I think around the country League people might be deceived you think of Texas you think of the great Runners you go back of course to Campbell but uh that really hasn't been the case this year Well to continue with what you were just saying Edwin Simmons had the potential to be a superstar he's had knee surgery twice now he's 64 238 lbs has 94 speed in the 100 he indeed would have been the man who would have been the next Earl Campbell but behind him you have kind of like all others third down and one from the 26 yd line and you've got a couple of flags and the play for No Gain I think it was Brian Chester number 72 the guard who may have been in motion this could be a crossly penalty in as much as you got third and one now turned into third and six back to the 21 yd line third down and six upcoming here's the call dead ball F star offense still third down so third down and six now so Todd Dodge has his first obvious pass situation he has like to go to his tight end lately number 95 William Harris along with his wide receivers he sends Goan wide to the left and he goes back to pass and looks the other way and CL one out here incomplete 33 he tried to find Harris and either he was out of bounds or bucked out of bounds Tim Green number 17 was covering on the play Green the fellow we were talking about a couple of minutes ago the high school Nemesis of Todd Dodge but Harris caught it out of bounds and thus Texas will be forced to kick again Harris is beginning to look more and more like another Lawrence sampleton a guy that we saw back in 1978 came on very strong as a freshman and had a great career here at the tight end position Tel bare fooot kicker there some speculation he was going to put a shoe on this week after talking with Russell kks Liv and earlier it's a long kick but it's a line drive kick taken at the 30 yd line and a decent run back by Andrew Livingston of 12 yds brings it back to the 42 so again near Midfield SMU takes over with no score in the first quarter s down mom in white with the ball at the 43 yd line Don King calls the signals gives it to Reggie two-part and the tail back games two to the 45 yd line where Tony degr number 99 makes the tackle update you in the S WC Arkansas leads Houston now 14 to nothing in the second quarter and TCU leads Baylor 38-28 in the fourth quarter now at the beginning of play today Houston on top in the conference at 3 and 0 Texas 2- 0 and SMU and TCU 2- one coming in in conference play second down and eight and they wrap up King for no game Steven brags the defensive back number six sopore from Houston gets the tackle take a look at the standings coming into play tonight now Houston is trailing by two touchdowns undefeated there's Texas TCU has really been the big surprise TCU 5- one overall and looking to make it 6 and one today and Jim Wacker just got rewarded with a new seven-year contract Dan Jenkins going to have to write another book yeah third down and seven now with King throwing and completing it for a first down to Albert Reese the tight end Reese making his 10th reception of the season and Steve Braggs was covering on the play and it's a first down for the Mustangs at the longhorn 46 yd line one thing that Don King has is a little bit more zip on the ball than Lance Melaney had I told you how good Lance was at running the option but King really has a strong arm he is ranked nationally in passing efficiency from the first and second [Music] week first down from the 46 yd line and straight ahead goes Gary hashway the fullback his first Carry just to give you some idea that the two fullbacks Morrison and hashway and the five games had carried a collective 40 times so they give it to their fullback you figured that out maybe twice a quarter they are very tailback oriented tailback tandems really are nothing new to SMU and in combinations of running backs out from the 43 they had Morris and Maxon back in the early 70s on second down at six it's Lee making the catch side stepping the tackle and run out of Bounds at the 23 yd line Bobby Lee who will be forever remembered by every SMU partisan for his Miracle plays two years ago number seven making the catch this could be a big story today Bobby Lee we thought we might see him he had a personal meeting with Coach Bobby Collins said he wanted more playing time as you mentioned Al he was known as The Miracle Man of 1982 because of the number of big plays that he made during their Cotton Bowl season he wants more playing time he might get it that's his first catch of the season 23 yd reception and it's a first down for the Mustangs at the horns 23 yd line and slipping losing his shoe Dart he came right out of his shoe as the shoe wound up at the 29 yd line and D Park wound up at the 24 of course one of those big plays that leech made in 1982 was right here in Austin here is the shoe story right here there is there is the loss of the aforementioned shoe By Reggie dupard the tailback loss of one second down and 11 and Don King calls a timeout after sending Ron moris in motion and thinking about it and looking over the defense in second and 11 upcoming at the longhorn 24 pH call time we have 3 minutes and 30 9 seconds remaining in the first quarter looks like you're into winning you bet then today Chevrolet has a car for you Cavalier come on in and turn it 2 L of electronically fuel injected Power Front Drive agility and optional sport suspension Cavalier grab one if this is today's Chevrolet it's a winner today Chevy today Chevy live it Chevy what would you call a Zena that puts a 25 in picture in a 19-in space smart me smart that's capable of 178 channels including cable choices are smart and for continuous color balance a computer brain a brain is Smart Plus parental control that locks out channels you don't want now that's smart the smart sets Advanced system 3 from Zenus designed with Zenith computer technology when you want everything smart SMU Texas no Score first threat of the game being posed here by the Mustangs they have the ball at the Texas 24 yd line Second down 11 they send Maris in motion to the right give the ball to Atkins a nice hole for him as he gets to the 17 yd line and TI Aller number 48 makes the tackle upcoming will be third down and about four a good look at what SMU does best the tailback draw play Jeff Atkins number 32 gets a good block from Andrew Campell number 67 that Springs him into the secondary the Sprint draw play has been one of their most effective weapons in the tailback tandem third down and four Atkins is out dupart is in again Mars goes in motion and they give it to the upback and that doesn't work Kobe Morrison gets hit by Tony Edwards right away so SMU figuring that the Texas defense would ke on the tail back got make surprise him but Edwards wasn't surprised in the slightest when we talked to Bobby Collins yesterday he gave us kind of a back to basic speech he said that ideally he would like to run the football he felt the time of possession would be an important statistic he said he wants to keep Texas off the field wants to keep the offense off the field here's Tomas EST who has been inconsistent this year a 33 yd attempt the kick is long enough and it is no good so as Debbie who's been having troubles this year he has missed from 26 and 22 and now he misses another pretty easy one bangs himself on the side of the helmet and and Texas takes over at the 20yd line frustrating for EST who stayed late after practice working on some of the things that has caused this inconsistency and in a game like this the kicking game could very well be the difference and that's where Texas truly excels first down from the 20 yd line Kevin Nelson a yard or so a minimal gain as Tom L Barger number 97 makes the tackle for the Mustangs gain of one out to the 21 it'll be second down and nine for the long horns with two8 remaining in the first quarter Kevin Nelson you mentioned how he had been switched back and forth several times he was a wide receiver in high school became a running back switched to wide receiver again then now back to running back he said that eventually he would really prefer to be a wide receiver they have their fastest man in the game that's 40 Kelvin EPS who's in the slot to the left with do flanked out to the left and Dodge goes over the middle to the big tight end Harris who was three and he gets out to the 29 yd line so he goes to William Harris they gave him some room underneath and as a consequence short little pass does not net the first down he is shy by half a yard ball spotted just outside the 29 yd line however right there number 95 has been one of the stories of the emergence of the Texas offense one of the reasons they have improved so dramatically he has become an outstanding tight end for them 65 235 third down and half a yard and it's teror carrying for the first [Applause] down long horns bring it out to the 33 yd line with a minute 7 Seconds to play in the quarter Terry or is a good nuts and bolts runner for the long horns particularly on those power plays where he goes tackle The Tackle was particularly effective in the ball game against Penn State that might have been Texas's best performance of the year they beat the nety lions 28-3 in East rutherwood that's a neutral sight but the crowd not particularly neutral there for pin State Nelson yard or two out the 35 kick case makes the tackle Texas has played a tough schedule this season horns open with a big win over Auburn 35 to 27 that's the game in which as you look at Brooks hobbling off that's the game that cost Auburn Bo Jackson services for the season then they beat Penn State knock rice off by 25 the tie with Oklahoma 15 all and then last week they had a 243 lead against Arkansas wound up winning 2418 and the game ended with the hogs at the four yd line of Texas Dodge scrambles and throws deep and almost inter almost caught again but incomplete Reggie Phillips was back there with Kelvin EPs and the ball just hanging and so the two nearly getting into a wrestling match both going for the ball and we've got them isolated stride for stride matchup here between EPs and Phillips the ball is underthrown watch the job that EPS does of reaching back and stripping the ball away from Phillips on what appears to be an interception good job there and then he nearly catches the ball again and that would have been a circus catch had he made it that's the end of the quarter we've played 15 minutes at Austin and it's Texas nothing SMU nothing some things look hard but once you know the secret they're easy it's easy some people think financing a new car is hard but it isn't it's easy it's as easy as GMAC with GMAC buying or releasing a new G g m car or truck is easy ask your GM dealer and see how easy it is financing a new car may seem hard but once you know the secret it's as easy as G it's [Music] easy I on the scene cuz anything can happen on a and light Halloween second quarter about to commence in Austin Texas the state capital Al Michaels League rose cup and Lyn Swan with you scoreless through 15 minutes and as we begin the second quarter Texas has the ball third and nine at the long on horn 34 yd line to dodge it'sit Duhan first down as Duhan gets in the SMU territory and he goes to the 37 yd line this time this week we talked about sasis makes the catch great moves here by BR so the former great High School combination teams up right here on a quick slan in pattern Phillips on the coverage right there and watch the Juke step right here as Duhan Cuts back to the outside spins off there and finally brought down by number five Reggie Phillips in the secondary great play by the former great High School battery 28 yd gain go back to the ground now and Kevin Nelson is ground down by Phillips among others Joe Phillips and Byron Frierson making the tackle here are the numbers through the first period Le quick first quarter and one of the things that uh that Bobby Collins told us yesterday is he hoped to win the Battle of time of possession he did that but really those numbers for the first quarter are kind of nondescript now and the only thing of consequence that happened in the first quarter was a missed field goal by SMU meanwhile Texas is going to take a timeout here timeout with its second down and 11 in the first minute of play in the second quarter interesting little story in the Dallas paper as we were coming down here the other day Le talking about the fact that even if Texas doesn't win the Southwest Conference they are nationally prominent enough to perhaps get a bold invitation to another major bowl on New Year's Day whereas for SMU to play on New Year's Day they really got to win the conference and get into the cotton ball and last year was truly a case in point when they had a terrific year wound up settling I say settling advisedly because that's the way they felt about it for the sunball and wound up playing a terrible game against Alabama that day what the article indicated was that SMU has a Charisma problem and I think that's unfair I think they have a lot of Charisma and historically that's been true they've had some great players going all the way back to the days of do Walker and Kyle rope Dandy Don Meredith Through The Years they've had some great ones I don't understand it frankly well TCU has had a Charisma problem too but they're trying to erase that as well they beat Baylor today 3828 and while nobody's looking TCU six and one on second down Dodge gets hit as he throws but completes it to the 28 yd line close to a first down meanwhile as Harris makes the catch let's check in with Jim lley hello Al over in Baton Rouge both teams have scored early LSU on a Wickerson to hilard touchdown pass Notre Dame at the end of an 80 yard drive that Allen pinket touchdown plunge it is a hot day Tim brt says close to 90° on the field they're tied up 77 back to you all right Jim LSU one of those teams that is unbeaten coming in they've also been tied as as Texas as Terry or carries for a first down Anthony Beverly makes the stop as far as unbeaten untied teams are concerned you've got Washington on top of every pole South Carolina Brigham Young a winner the other night over New Mexico and the school that used to be referred to is Cal State Disneyland otherwise known as Cal State Fon undefeated and untied at this point from the 24 yd line carrying for three is Kevin Nelson down to the 21 it'll be second down and seven Cal State Disneyland the pcaa is a strong conference this year and it's the year of the quarterback in the pcaa that's a conference that doesn't get a lot of publicity and there's no way that Cal State fingon will win a National Championship but interesting just at this point to note only four teams that remain unbeaten and untied as we are just about at the halfway mark of the college season a little bit past that for some schools second down at seven again Kevin Nelson skirts to the outside and takes it inside of the 20 down to the 18 yd line where Donald Allen the sophomore number 12 from Fort Worth makes the tackle Evo hookham horns I don't see peruna here today the SMU mascot the fabl Shetland pony as you watch Nelson come hobbling off now he started the game freshman orell comes in to replace him doesn't look to be serious Nelson just needs a breather right here and Texas is going to give him time to breathe even more because they're going to take another time out so this is the second timeout Texas has taken on this drive with a little bit more than 12 minutes to play in the half and we're still score Less in Austin I like small cars we need more room today Chevrolet has a car for you the midsize celebrity feel the room ride in style go in Comfort every mile enjoy midsize room with economy and a price that's surprisingly small celebrity lots of stuff here if this is today's Chevrolet I like it and we need it drive today Chev to Chevy Liv [Music] Chevy the beauty of a Delta faucet is when it's on it's on and when it's off it's off its washerless design helps keep it from dripping so it last and last and last Delta forcet we're first because we [Music] last Texas Longhorns on their third drive and their only successful one to this point successful at least to this juncture their first two series will reach three plays four yards and a punt but this one so far 11 plays 62 yds a big play here though on third down and four from the 19 yd line and dodg to the short side throws complete to or and a first down at the 10 yd line teror number 37 out of the back field to make the catch but a penalty marker is down at the 15 and SMU indicating it is against Texas as you saw Anthony Beverly clapping his hands and that will be the call that's against the horns ineligible receiver illegal receiver downfield and so that nullifies what would have been a longhorn first down in the first quarter seven over s that's something that Todd Dodge does so effectively he has good quick feat good anticipation they use him a little bit the way the Washington Redskins you Jo Joe having ineligible down field offense the a 5yd penalty and loss A Down fourth down big big penalty instead of first down and goal you have fourth down fourth down and nine back at the 24 yd line and they will attempt a field goal as Jeff Ward comes into the game the ball will be spotted at the 31 yd line a 41 yd kick Breeze is really no Factor certainly within Ward's range the kick is long enough and the kick is good Jeff W has now made five out of eight this season and the long get on the board 1134 to play in the half on Monday Night Football beautiful sunshiny day in Austin temperature now in the mid 70s cloudy and rainy morning and a lot of rain over the past couple coup of weeks Don't Have To Tell You Folks looking on in the Houston area just how much rain you've had in Texas this week but the conditions right now are very very good Full House at Memorial Stadium in Austin Texas on top by a score of 3 nothing and the man who just gave them the lead kick off sophomore Jeff Ward his hometown is Austin approaches the ball and it's a low short bouncing kick that is taken up at the 11 yd line fumbled and covered at the 19 yd line L by Byron Collins number 20 and let's go to work now with Lyn Swan Lyn well I'm down here on the sideline you're taking a look at bivo number 12 in the line of mascots for Texas it's 1916 very often the team plays like its mascot with Texas being strong on defense finally bullying its way down field and Todd Dodge Al steering his team into field goal position well not bad pulling and steering and we're not even to halftime yet from the 19 yd line it is Don King rolling to the right and coming all the way out to the 34 yd line talking about the things King can do passing and running and John haggy was able to make the tackle on it that's one of the things we talked about earlier he's had to establish himself as a leader stepping in for Lance Melaney not as effective on the opp play but this is what he does so well he has great athletic skills a good strong arm passer Good Foot speed and you see in the open field that he can run the ball he's tackled there by John Hay number 17 but that gives them a little different dimension to their attack this year throw ball first down SMU from the 32 yd line ball throw and it is Jeff Atkins run out of bounds near the 40 after a gain of seven t Griffin running him out of Bounds at that point Atkins a terrific freshman season last year in fact he eclipsed Earl Campbell's freshman record in the Southwest Conference but this year as we said before he's really trying to have his first outstanding day Arkansas at the half leading Houston 143 and this is a real shocker when Kansas leading Oklahoma 103 in the third period second down and a long three and it's Atkins big hole and to the longhorn 44 yard line so maybe this is the day they've been waiting for from Atkins bnie cins very hopeful that Atkins could begin to break it he had 5 100 plus games in 83 none so far in 84 but looking good so far today the word on Atkins is that he has been running tentatively this year Bobby Collins told us yesterday not true good blocking on the right side that bur him in the secondary the man who makes the tackle the All-American and the great one Jerry gray number two but now Atkins has five carries for 36 yds 16 on that carry first down from the 44 yd line is King rolls and gets tripped up at the 42 a nice play by Ty Allard number 48 and King gotten by Allard he probably could have turned it up for about seven or 10 WI has defeated Ohio State tremendous upset at Camp Randall Stadium 1614 three years in a row I believe they have upset Ohio State Notre Dame in LSU with the Tigers coming in seventh in the country South Carolina stays unbeaten Gamecock SP at 42 to 20 second down and eight Mustangs with dupai carrying the 41 yd line Reggie dupy for a gain of one and it'll be third down and seven with 9 minutes and 53 seconds remaining in the first half Texas 3 SMU nothing coach of the year in his initial season at SMU some people think of Bobby Collins as a newcomer but really he has been coaching now for 30 years either as an assistant or as a head coach celebrated his 51st birthday Thursday on Third and seven King has the pass deflected and it will be fourth down looking for his tight end Albert Reese but the pass was deflected by an onrushing lineman and it's fourth down at the 41 yd line as the crowd responds to the longhorn defense back to receive is Kelvin EPS kicked by Carter takes a backward bounce and gets down at the 11 yd line that's where the LGH horns will have it they lead 3 nothing with 912 to play in the half well moms and dads the world around give their kids the same old sound got to go to school be a big success they wouldn't say settle for anything less now they've learned whatever you seek you'll help yourself to reach your peak in the Army Navy Air Force Marines need a trade looking for a skill they have hundreds to fit the bill and the Army Navy Air Force Marines want more school don't have them bread they'll have pay to get you ahead of the Big Apple defending Champions Ron Dixon GRE ofit plus thousands more the New York City Marathon live tomorrow on [Music] ABC 9 minutes and 12 seconds remaining Memorial Stadium Austin Texas coming up next week check your local listings for the game in your area you will see either Boston College against Penn State or Auburn facing the Florida Gators next week on CFA football first down Texas as they begin this drive from the 12 yd line and Kevin Nelson takes it out to the 17 Fred akres in his eighth season there's his overall Mark tough act to follow for him Daryl Royle with tremendous success here became a legendary coach and then Acres came over there is Fred's sun and he's the backup quarterback Danny Acres Junior who backs up Todd Dodge he's completed three of seven passes this season second and four and it's Nelson fumbling the ball out at the 22 yd line and SMU let's see they are very excited about recovering it and they think they have and they do it's official as the signal is made by the referee the Tim Green number 17 recovers the fumble at the 22 yd line so Kevin Nelson CS it up and SMU is right back in business Kevin Nelson number 32 on the blast play off tackle is hit hard at the line of scrimmage there goes the ball right there the loose ball goes to his right it's covered by tip GRE number 17 now smmu on a Miss Direction play a flag going down dupart carries to the 19 yd line Joe Thomas discussing the penalty [Applause] and it's against SMU holding call against the [Applause] Mustangs there's the great 99 and Tackle yep get grabbed right hray right there yeah that is that's your quintessential holding right there I always love it when you get quintessential in before halftime yep takes it back to the 35 yd line onlyy offense F first down and with the ball going back now to the 35 yd line it will be first down and 23 the Texas LGH horns second in the UPI pole and third in the AP pole SMU 14 and 16 in the two wire service PS first and 23 from the 35 yd line King throwing deep he's got Morris open but unfortunately Mars is well out of bounds for SMU so Mars was able to Spring free and clear Jerry gray and John haggy but they ran him right into the boundy and it'll be second down moris running a fade pattern now watch as he runs his fly route he is fading to the outside had this ball been thrown over his inside shoulder it could have been a touchdown but he it's thrown way wide here and he has to go outside the boundary to make the catch Bobby leaks now comes into the game second down and [Applause] 23 pressure from the flying side but he escapes it and that throws incomplete tended for Maris Pleasant June James the linebacker was the man applying The Blindside pressure and it's third down and 23 from the 35 June James one of three active linebackers in the 4-3 defense for for Texas and as you mentioned earlier Fred akres feels that that is the strength of the Texas defense they're one of few teams left that use the traditional 4-3 defense and they employ about 80% man coverage King sending three receivers and he gets decked at the 50 Phil heathcock and Tony deg great cared him at the 50 yd line and so after SMU recovers no fumble they just go backwards they go all the way back to near Midfield and Dodge Cartner stands in his own 40 to kick it away with Kelvin F deep to receive for Texas he handles the low snap gets off a high floating kick that bounces inside the five and goes into the end zone for a Touchback so the Texas defense really stiffening they keep believe three nothing and they'll take over the 20 yd line and we have 7 minutes and 8 seconds remaining in the first half interestingly that SMU has had a lot of trouble scoring early this year they've been U having problems especially in their conference games early on but they have been a better second half team particularly a good fourth quarter team because of the fact that they have they get those fresh backs in throughout the game Sometimes they come up with big plays in the fourth quarter from the 20yd line hand it off to Nelson freshman tail back 7 minutes remaining in the half Nelson was a wide receiver in high school and then they had to move him to running back and they did exceptionally well there came here and they were going to have him play at a wide receiver spot but because of the injuries we talked about before they had to move him back again the New York City marathon that great annual event live coverage begins tomorrow at 10:30 Eastern Time second and six Dodge throwing to Duhan for a first down out of the 36 yd line his second reception Anthony Beverly made the tackle Duhan had caught only five passes this season coming into the game that's two today for him the pressure comes from Jerry ball the nose guard number 34 on Todd Dodge now what Dodge does so effectively here is use his Escape Dimension he moves to the right sets up again in the pocket finds his old high school battery mate Brent Duhan for a big first down Longhorns at 36 yd line Dodgers now four of seven for 60 yds give it to Nelson he's trying to turn the corner but nothing doing he can't get around TD Briggs number 54 a junior from Dallas TD Briggs number 54 we talk so much about lateral movement and the importance of saying when you're a linebacker watch the move here of TD Briggs as he moves laterally makes the tackle perfectly in the open field on number 32 Kevin Nelson he keeps that nice low center of gravity and gets his head in front where it's supposed to be Texas leading three nothing 535 to go in the half second down and 10 from the 36 Dodge throwing it way out of bounds he was in tending to hit Nelson but the pressure that time came from Anthony Beverly the the outside backer number 31 who made Dodge get rid of it in a hurry and it's third down well you know something about Todd Dodge he does not major in compact spiral let's face it some of those passes will look like a shot put when it goes down field but there was a quarterback who played for Texas back in the 40s who didn't always throw a compact spiral either you know the man I'm talking about Mr Lane right Bobby Lane but he knew how to win he did third down and 10 Dodge again throwing a floating pass and everybody gets there and it is out of bounds Don Allen was covering Bill booy Bryant Dodge getting hit windmilling his arm well one of the reasons he often throws the ball like this because he was under a great deal of pressure here as he tried to get the ball out to the sideline to Bill boy Bryant and another receiver out there double cover he threw the ball into double cover Texas to punt tck it's a fair kick not kicking as well today as he normally does and goes out of Bounds at the 33 yard line so SMU will take over at that spot 510 remaining to the half three nothing horns there we were in no man's land when the moving truck died in the sun and the sand so since it seemed we'd be a while we set up house and we waited in style and we waited and we waited and we waited now I know Rider and some newer they're tougher they're strong and driving a barn and sure didn't pay so next time I'll think this spray it's r or or it's wrong selling today it's tough just one one sales call can cost $200 so before your people go out make sure it's a hot lead AT&T can help our people can show your people how to use AT&T watts and AT&T 800 service so chances are when they make a call they'll make a sale been expecting it the people of AT&T Communications we're thinking about your business in ways you never thought of G moving along very quickly Texas on top three nothing as SMU begins this drive from its own 33 yd line first and 10 the Mustangs with Don King number two the quarterback they've got Atkins in a tail back and that is Atkin stopped for no game by Tony degre number 99 64 276 lb senior and we have degr isolated he's the All Conference pick Tony degr one of the pre Premier defensive players in college football this year shakes off a tackler goes right to the center of the ball carrier there he shows you some of the strength he has he's also a good all-around athlete he's played several sports played several Sports in high school second down and 10 King throwing out to the 41 yd line and incomplete for Bobby leech at the 41 yd line it will be third down think about the great lot of schools do it too and you can't blame them you get somebody like that you think he can get all conference and maybe all America honors you give him that double numeral you give him the 88 of the 99 of the 77 it makes him that much more visible remember what the Pittsburgh did with ug green as a freshman gave him 99 and you couldn't miss the boy ug green was hard to miss third down and 10 from the 33 yd line incomplete well over the head of Ron Morris so carer comes in he's already punted four times today 70 313 and 48 yards averaging 44.8 SMU had punted just 16 times in five games before this one about three times a game in this is already five in the first half as the Texas defense does its job and the kick is fielded at the 16 yd line by EPS who brings it back to the 25 Texas will have it there and right now we can take a look at the campus of Southern Methodist University when you think of college you might think of a small school with a personal touch when you think University you probably picture a big diverse Center of exciting educational activity it's Methodist University were both six small colleges Under One Roof where you get to know your teachers and classmates up close personally and you study under senior faculty even from the start of your first year Southern Methodist University it's the [Music] experience Texas leading 3 nothing with 4 minutes 15 seconds remaining in the first half we're at Memorial Stadium in Austin where come cloudy again Bobby cins his team really with its back to the wall now because they lost last week and with two losses chances are they're not going to go to the cotton Bal with one loss they'd be still in pretty good position especially in a head-to-head confrontation with Texas if that's what they came down to if they can beat the horn Nelson and Kevin is rid down at the 31 yd line by kit case and Tim Green Tim Green number 17 Junior from West Orange [Music] Texas leads the team in tackles well Bobby Collins who you were just talking about is a guy that has the reputation of being kind of laidback soft spoken but he's very businesslike when it comes to football on second and three reversing his direction is Nelson and it's enough to spin him free and he's close to a first down where Goen I believe got his hand on a face mask and a flag goes down that could be the call Monte Goen number 35 to wrestle him down had to grab the match he did this on his own now watch Goen number 35 going going gone face Mas so Nelson has the first down and they will tack on some additional acreage Texas will have one timeout remaining here's the call that's being a face mask defense first down 39 yd line now Texas goes with Terry o and Rob Morell as the running backs Morell to quarterback last year even though when the year began it was going to be Dodge starting but he was hurt and Melle gave up his spot to Dodge in the SMU game they move Mel to running back this fall from the thir 9 yd line dodg is under pressure and lofs it out of bounds nearest man was Duhan but he was just trying to throw it away and avoid the interception it'll be second down and 10 Joe Phillips and Monty Goen put the pressure on that's exactly what he did he threw it away and he threw it away well that was a good thing to do there because he would have taken a loss something that a lot of quarterbacks take a while to learn Dodge last year came off the bench in the third period to replace Morell threw the winning TD pass to Bryant in the SMU game Dodge again throwing a little floater that's caught by Harris and the tight end is to the 30 yd line and down to the 26 William Harris the sophomore they love to go to him a very inviting Target at 65 and 234 and toss to bring down the thing we talked about earlier the esape dimension of Todd Dodge at his quarterback position ball is in watch the hit by ball just as he unloads Jerry ball the nose tackle comes over but he gets the ball off and keeps his concentration as Harris the tight end number 95 makes the catch and then El ludes three tacklers on route to a first down he is often compared of course to Lawrence sampleton who was here in the late 70s and early 80s 3 and 1/2 minutes to go in the second quarter and from the 26 yd line it's Kevin Nelson straight ahead for a gain of two to the 24 it'll be second down and eight Harris on the day now has three catches for 55 yards you and I covered the Texas Arkansas game in 1978 when Lawrence sampleton emerged gur ball the nose guard right here is a guy who is consistently around the football loves to hit comes to play every week and he is known as the ice box we have Jean Jean the Coke machine and the ice box ball feels at home in number 34 he was a fullback in high school second and eight Dodge loing it deep Bryant is double covered and it's thrown away Bboy Bryant covered extremely well that time Tim Green meanwhile Dodge takes another hit and Todd will need some extra time to get up here their backup quarterback Danny Acres Fred sun and also a good-looking freshman in Brett Stafford are the men behind Todd Dodge as time is called now with 235 remaining in the half and there is Danny Acres buckling up the chin strap so an official time out as they work on Todd Dodge and while they do that let's pay a visit to the campus of the University of Texas at the University of Texas at Austin there is intellectual excitement and a sense of great Enterprise there is a shared conviction that what we are doing is important to the future of our society and that in this decade Texas is the place to be to be a part of the right now diamond called the University of Texas was an Allure I could not [Music] [Applause] resist very encouraging sight as Todd Dodge has just gotten up but he will be coming off at least for the moment and Danny akres comes into replac it with 235 remaining in the hand it's Danny Acres son of Coach Fred to take over at least the rest of this drive or a couple of plays anyway we'll find out about the rest of the drive it's third down and eight at the 24 yd line as they go to split backs now fumble the eye and Acres fumbles and falls on it and a two markers go down after akres recovers his own fumble two flags and it's a personal foul against SMU boy that's a big call Big call David Stanley number 30 was the man who came in I believe for the late hit that's the cause of of this instead of fourth down against Texas fourth down in a a relatively long field goal attempt they're back in business at the 12 with the first have a day in ball personal foul sping first down spearing is the call and there it is right there by number 30 David Stanley and that's a good call that's that's a flagrant violation of the rules and it's one of the most dangerous things because it can cause severe injury so instead of fourth down it would have been a 42 yd field goal attempt it's first down now at the 12 yd line for Texas coming to the left side is Kevin Kevin Nelson taking it to the 10 for a gain of two and the clock now down to a minute and 58 and the half that's the kind of play you can look back on and say maybe that's where the game turned around there is Dodge helmet back on so he appears ready to come in at any time I think he got a hit just as he released the ball had the wind knocked out of him on second down eight it's fumbling again and recovering back at the 17 yd line remember steel Hammer is the center today they have had Jean shilon in there but because of the fact that shilon is a flexible guy who they can move around they moved him back to tackle slippery handed right there is the quarterback Danny Acres he covers his own fumble but that hurt dad's going to make sure he eats all his touch next week time out Texas it's their last timeout in this half with a minute 13 left of the half Texas on top by a score of three nothing and it will be third down and 15 with the ball at the 17 yd line and Todd Dodge back into the ball game very pop of a move with this capacity crowd however he faces a third and 15 and one of the things that he has done in Long yardage situations is go to play action passes those are not always so effective because the defense knows that you're going to pass he's got Duhan wide left Bryant wide to the right Harris lined up on the right side sends them all into the pattern looking over the middle for Harris and just too high a little bit too too high for Terry or Terry or number 37 couldn't come down with it Harris was also in the area as everybody went out into the pattern and it's fourth down now Terry or coming from his halfback position tries to find an open area in the secondary and he leaps right there that's number 37 it looked momentarily like he could have caught the ball but Tim Green number 17 was close by on the coverage here's Jeff for now it'll be a 34 yd field goal attempt he made a 41 y in the second quarter a straight on Kick and it's good Jeff ward has now kicked four field goals over the past two years against SMU last year up at Texas stadium he kicked a 47 Y and a 52 y he's got a strong leg we talked to him yesterday and he told us that that recently he hit one that went 73 ydd in practice he's your basic kicker if you visited with Jeff yesterday he was out here and the field was quite slippery took one of the uh the blocking pets and did his best uh Margo olberg imitation down the sideline if you don't know who Margo is he's a champion Surfer from Hawaii Wella he did a little skimming on the the artificial surface it kind of worries the coach well maybe it would worry the coach if he weren't that way you kind of want your kickers to be a little off the wall don't you they've been known to be pling Ward to kick again it's a bouncer that's taken at the three yd line by Kobe Morrison and back he comes to the 15 Gerard senagal number five is the man who made the tackle with 58 seconds remaining in SMU should they elect to utilize their timeouts have two pretty much the kind of first half we expected strong defense by both teams we figured the kicking game might be influential and it has been really no surprises so far first down from the 15 yd line and currently they're going to be content to just stay on the ground and Reggie dupart will take it out to the 19 yd line again two time outs remaining for SMU and it appears they'll just be content to go into the drling room down six to nothing second and six ball at the 19 yd line Dart again has the first down takes it out to the 29 yd line that momentarily stops the clock with 20 seconds Jerry gray and Ty Allard making the tackle on the play first down Mustangs at the 29 yd line clock now starts again and Mustangs not indicating any desire TI to necessarily get into playoff this will be the final play if indeed they do snap it before the half ends and the final play of the half is a long pass from King that is incomplete intended for Ron moris and he was well covered and that's the end of the first half so very much according to hoil defensive struggle kicking Gaines the difference Texas lead 6 nothing and let's go to Lin Swan coach did you expect this game to be such a defensive battle in the first half well it usually has been I think we're both of us have been floundering around a little bit I know we have we've missed some opportunities and we're not handling the ball real well and defense thank goodness is playing well your defense is playing great the play the pass play dodged to Harris coming in the last part of the second quarter was that set up by the ground attack the run then going up top yes it is we're we're trying to set things up with William he's a he's a real pass threat and we're trying to work off of his pass threat to both our running game and a passing game a little bit of a scare when Dodge went down what would happen to your offensive team should Dodge go down in this ball game well the first thing we're going to have to do is get the snap from Center that's true what do you expect from your from the uh SMU in the second half and what would you tell your team at halftime well there's 30 minutes left it's zero to zero okay thank you coach that's a story halftime Al okay ly six to Nothing Texas on top Longhorns two and three in the nation depending on the poll that you prefer SMU 14 and 16 in the two polls and Texas looking to maintain at least a portion of the lead in the Southwest Conference leading at the half six to nothing beat Mississippi State 24-21 Georgia beat Kentucky 37-7 dogs unbeaten in the conference the only other unbeaten untied team in the SEC is Auburn Vanderbilt beat Mississippi 37 to 20 keeping their flickering bull hopes alive now boo cook you were quoted in a national newspaper this week as saying that Brigham Young will play in a major bowl something other than the Holiday Bowl you sincerely believe that's going to happen I hope that if BYU has a shot to the national title if they get to play in the Maj bowl and somehow I think it's going to be worked out I BYU cannot win the national title by just playing in the Holiday Bowl they have to play somebody like Texas in Nebraska or somebody like LSU and Auburn and win and if they're 12 and0 and then winning that bowl game they should be national champs a Continuing Story which we will watch as the season goes on through your eyes I'll be back later in halftime with a report on Jerry Fon Notre a now back to the Bands Le gross cup college football Auburn linebacker Greg Carr to play college football really does take a lot of Sacrifice by the individual I think if a student athlete is to excel both in the classroom and on the football field it takes a great amount of desire and determination by the athlete but it can be done sometimes it's hard to come off the practice field force yourself to study where the Texas Longhorns are leading the Mustangs of SMU halftime score is 6 to nothing as the Texas band performs on what's become an overcast day temperature in the yeah mid 70s oh you're all aware of that situation involving Jerry fa the head coach at Notre Dame for a close to look in an update let's join Jim Lampley for this report Jim Lampley again in New York the Jerry F Affair has been a painful one no pleasure for any reasonably Humane reporter to cover but subject of continuing Fascination for college football fans so here now is the product of one week's digging among sources close to Notre Dame football in the modern history of the sport ABC research locates only four college coaches who assumed head coaching jobs without any previous colle experience the most successful of the four Paul Brown who left melon Ohio won a national championship at Ohio State various pro football titles with the Cleveland Browns and the Cincinnati Bengals most recent of course Notre Dame's Jerry F who built an indomitable high school program at a Roman Catholic School named mher in Cincinnati 18 years there only 17 losses a success story built on motivation discipline and religious furor everybody say away and after having sent 20 m players to Notre Dame University F himself made the pilgrimage in 1981 only to find himself in the center of mediocrity on the field and discontent off of it neither experience as new to Notre Dame as you may have been led to believe for four years under joku Harin the 50s and 60s the Irish were a losing football team situation which ultimately led to the hiring of the now legendary ARA Paran recently Paran himself spoke out about fa's troubles for a Cincinnati newspaper in surprisingly candid comments Paran called into question fa's administrative capacity his grasp of reality and a subject many others have pointed to constant upheaval on the coaching staff in the past 3 years there have been a total of eight changes in FA staff some of the coaches left of their own valtion some by mutual agreement only one was really fired but several of those involved in the situation including at least one former player to whom we spoke and one former assistant coach now coaching in professional football point to the constant changes in Jerry fa's coaching staff as a continuing problem for noted Dame football I think that uh he came from such a successful program he came here and he thought he was going to win right away and he's not a very patient man and all of a sudden if things weren't going right he felt he had to have a change and that's the only thing I disagree with him on that is the fact that you can build a good foundation you have to have that continuity in a program and I know a lot of times players are having three or four different coaches in a three-year period and that's tough on them any coaching staff you may have one or two changes that might be expected uh to happen over over a coach's contract 5 years or whatever but to just see a revolving door taking place every year you begin to wonder whether it's whether uh uh a move should be made from the top or not F has been given credit for four excellent recruiting years but some doubt that the players as they have been used at Notre Dame were really that good granted he's gotten a lot of talent from around the United States and I think maybe he's had a few problems of coordinating and putting the people in the right places uh to try to get the best out of them that he could I think maybe he's had a few problems with that there are some players um who come in with all the credentials and never and and don't turn out to be the player that they're supposed to be but that's the chance you taking any recruit um I think it's it's basically up to the individual if I say they're overrated then I knock the players of the past and I have a lot of respect for the players of the past if I said they're not uh uh coached well then I sort of knock myself so I I really can't answer in a question like that all I can say is that uh uh we're uh working hard and and uh there's a lot of time and uh and uh we'll have to wait and see what the end results are aside from the charges of mismanagement of the staff and misuse of talent there is one more serious accusation on the record against fous Dave Duron claims the coach has failed to shoulder his share of the blame for the team's losses I've never once heard coach F himself take any blame uh it's either been uh uh lack of finesse from his quarterbacks or you know some some phase of of the uh of the football team itself other than Jerry F I have several personal reactions to the F story a few of which are worth mentioning one one I can't help but sympathize with a man who is repeatedly Savaged in print and in public for No Greater crime than losing football games ideally as a functionary in the educational process he should be judged not by the scoreboard but by the effect he has on the athletes he coaches two I'm not sure enough attention has been paid to the role of the Notre Dame Administration in this affair if they are sincerely more interested in honoring fa's contract and accepting their responsibility for him than in satisfying the Wolves who want him fired then I praise and congratulate them if they honestly thought his background qualified him to be a topflight college coach then ridicule them and not him there is as we all know one more year on the contract fa whether foolishly or courageously insists he'll stick it out well I I'll be back I'm not uh uh uh going to give the ship up now I've worked too hard and I've taken a lot of criticism and and you know you've Tak criticism from a lot of different sources and you know some former players and things like that but that that's all part of it a little girl was trapped I had to save her she need it I didn't I thought about my own little girl who'd protect her coming around Stevie boy you live to tell football the All-American Game the credential halftime report has been sponsored by credential For Life Health Auto home get a piece of the rock credential Insurance we're back it's half time at Memorial Stadium in Austin Texas where the Longhorns of Texas lead the Mustangs of SMU 6 nothing big Bertha the University of Texas Longhorn band Big drum and Vio and all the color and pageantry of Southwest Conference football Al Michaels at League grow cup we talked toward the end of the first half leag no surprises in the first half now what about this second half and what about somebody like Bobby Collins whose team really has been unable to generate very much of anything offensively he has to be concerned do you see him making any adjustments frankly Al I don't think you're going to see any radical departure from the initial game plan what he wanted to do was come out and run the ball play possession football keep Texas off the field because he was concerned about uh some of the big play capability of Texas so I think that what you saw in the first half is what you're going to see again in the second half if you're the type of fan that likes wide open razzled Dazzle football you are probably sitting in the wrong Stadium here in the first half but if you like low scoring hard-hitting uh type of football with with an accent on the kicking game you probably enjoyed the first half and I think it's going to be the same type of a show in the second half unless one team gets more ahead of the other could boil down to a big break winning this one right now it's Jeff Ward who is the difference in the game as he's kicked two field goals in the halftime Texas is on top the score is six to nothing leading SMU at halftime at Memorial Stadium in Austin I'm checking in it's 3:00 p.m. and the guy says we have your reservation right here wonderful hands me the key but we don't have your room ready just yet we're getting it ready now so here I am eating pretzels I don't really want in a lounge I don't really want to be in waiting for my room to become my room next time ra where they know how to take care of business folks will tell you I got something going all the time and for chills and thrills so party down no matter who you like to bite you're going to want Coors and Coors Light tonight course light bearwolf is there fun is everywhere get ready for excitement when Coors is on the scene cuz anything can happen on and light Halloween I'm with the head coach of SMU Bobby Collins Coach Collins what is your team going to do differently on offense in the second half to come out and play in this ball game well I think that uh number one we're going to go back and and use the two tight ends I think that what we can do we can keep their their two techniques from from slanting and it gives us our trap and our our counter uh traps in inside and all and then we going to mix up our passing with that and uh you know I look for Texas to come out they've had some success moving the ball throw and I look for them to try to throw the ball a little bit more second half what's the attitude of your ball club they're still up they're still excited about this ball game football team still up still excited we we had two opportunities to put points on the board we did not our team feels real good at this time I just hope we can play the 30 more minutes of football thank you coach okay thank you Al all right Lyn well he's still very much in the game and SMU has been playing better in the second half than in the first in their Southwest Conference games to this point they're only down by six six nothing is the halftime score tonying off rest of you will be number 4 soas EST will kick off for SMU and back deep to receive for Texas are Kelvin EPs and Tony kman and here we go third quarter is underway EST de's kick to the near side n yd line EPS out past the 20 tackled at the 29 yd line and this ABC Sports exclusive is being brought to you by Chevrolet who invites you to see today's Chevy drive today Chevy live today Chevy by Sharp electronic corporation from sharp Minds come sharp products by ride or truck it's rer or it's wrong and by Mr Goodwrench and General Motors Parts who help you keep that great GM feeling with genuine GM parts Texas at the 29 yd line first and 10 very little breeze right now has had no effect on the game to this point teror out to the 30 yd line gain of one Mustangs up front Tom line Barker they brought him down from Illinois there's Jerry B the ice box and Joe Phillips who got the start over John iesan today linebackers are Ron Anderson number 22 KD Briggs couple of big plays for him in the first half K case out of Dallas and Anthony Beverly the best of the bunch number 31 all Southwest Conference in 83 31 yd line called it second and eight for the Longhorns with Dodge back to pass moving to his left and then throwing incomplete he bounced it out at the 43 yd line intended for Brent Duhan third down now they've got rodk Jones of SMU at a corner Reggie Phillips on the other side he's picked off two passes this season Brook sprained his left knee recall in the first half and his spot has been taken by Donald Allen and then Tim Green is the free safety number 17 third down and eight long horns at the 31 yd line Texas ahead 6 nothing Dodge Under Pressure floats one toward briyan and he makes the catch at the 47 Bill boy Bryan doesn't have great speed doesn't really have great moves just runs his routes well and seems to be there when you need him this is vintage to dodge right here he moves out to his pocket three men are around him as he unleashes the ball and bill booy Bryant number 80 a former High School quarterback catches the ball right in front of number one rodri Jones the fastest man on the team for SMU Bill booy Bryan engaged to the daughter of the Texas athletic director to Lost Dodge as Kevin Nelson carries the ball out to the 50 yd line gain of three for the Freshman tailback so you've got Dodge and Nelson with or the running backs Bryant and Duan are the wide receivers and the line Chilton the big man has moved from The Tackle this week with right steelhammer Chester Stewart and the tight end William Harris excuse me CH one of the strongest men they have ever had bench pressing over 500 [Applause] lb on second and seven from the 50yd line it's Dodge back under pressure throws as he's hit and completes it to Harris at the 36 yd line first down horns pressure applied once again by nose guard number 34 Jerry ball who is listed at 257 but is probably more like 265 his nickname is the ice box and he put the Deep Freeze on the quarterback that time Todd Dodge however Dodge was very cool himself and got the ball to his tight end William Harris number 95 on a sideline cut official calling time they're looking at the clock and the clock shows zero we are into the third period maybe two or so minutes into it so the clock has malfunctioned and that's the reason right now that we have timeout call well Bobby Collins told ly Swan that he expected the longh horns to come out passing here in the second half and that's exactly what they've done they've maneuvered themselves all the way down to the 36 yard line so while they rectify the problem and fix the clock at the more roal Stadium we'll take a time out with Texas leading 6 nothing what aming when weathers football on theone why does your car need a fresh fill of prone a radiator could look this bad after just 10,000 M of driving on weak neglected antifreeze while a Prestone radiator looks this good that's the Prestone difference what gets the country set for winter from New York to San Anton America goes withone hey Dad look at Harold's new Japanese car Colt Colt's not a Japanese car sure feel how soloft the doors are look at the fit and what a deal I got cold imported for Dodge in Plymouth built by mitsub Bishi in Japan let's take a spin first take your shoes off why isn't this car called something Japanese cold it's all the Japanese you need to know Jim lample again in New York it is Final in Lawrence Kansas where The Jayhawks have pulled one of the two biggest upsets of the season this one ranks along with Syracuse over Nebraska Oklahoma's fourth quarter comeback on offense consisted of two interceptions thrown one kick blocked one fumble lost and that's a measure of some indirect revenge for the Texas fans copper all right Bo six to Nothing Texas as they fix the clock and it's dodg back to throw hitting dhan to the 21 yd line Brent Doan making the catch that's another first down Crossing patterns have been very effective for Texas particularly when you get a boot or wagle action here Dodge moving to his right finds his favorite Target Brent Duan number seven catching the ball right in front of number 17 Tim Green that's what he does best throwing on the Move quick feet good anticipation first down to the 21 yd Line This is Mell carrying last year's quarterback he gets to the 15 one result of the upset of Oklahoma today is that in the AP pole the Texas wins unquestionably they will move into second place they were third this week halftime numbers are right there total yards under scored here kind of indicates what type of a first half it was as I mentioned if you like wide open razzled Dazzle offensive football you were probably sitting in the wrong Stadium but if you like good Clow scoring defensive football you're in the right place second down and four or that will be first and goal is Terry takes it to the 9yd Line This is the most convincing Drive The Long Horns have had today nice mixture of runs and passes good play action good drop back good power running by the horns first and goal inside the nine or is calling for a timeout they'll take a timeout to set it up here as they've mooved to a first and goal situation and dods goes over to spend some time with Acres 1140 remaining third quarter Texas leading 6 nothing and driving test pilot Chuck Jager for AC Delo this flight doesn't get scrubbed for bad weather a high performance fighter has the technology to handle it so does this the all weather Delco Freedom battery with the power to start you in the cold and the technology to beat the heat and you never add a drop of water never wait for trouble get the all weather Delco Freedom going you've always known it where you're going it's where you're going it's exceptionally smooth michelo going Monday night a key AFC West matchup see the 6 and2 Seahawks battle to stay in the division race against Dan fs and San Diego on Monday Night [Music] Football Texas on top six to nothing early in the third quarter they have Tak taking the ball all the way down to the SMU 8 yd line it is first down goal tie Dives the quarterback Jerome Johnson and Terry or the running back and they give it to Johnson and he gets to the seven Johnson 62219 they like to go to him in these short yardage situations goal line situations that's what's known as their Mash formation and the reason they call it the mash formation is because everybody lines up real tight and they just kind of mash it also after the TV series match second and goal they call Johnson's number again and he gets down for the touchdown he's in [Applause] there Jerome Johnson breaking the plane of the goal line and the Longhorns score the game first touchdown this is the mass formation and that's Jerome Johnson number 35 the big 220lb fullback the power play off the right side and he follows in behind a a wall of lineman for the touchdown his fifth touchdown of the Season Jeff Wards point after Morell holding kick is perfect so the long horns go all the way down the field and increased that Advantage now to 13 to nothing and again SMU is put into a position as they were last week where they find themselves behind by a couple of touchdowns last week they fell nine shy and lost 29 to 20 to Houston come a look here and we'll see if indeed he broke the plane in the goal line Johnson on the right side takes the power hand off now watch him the rule is the ball must break the plane of the goal line and if the ball breaks the plane it is a touchdown the football is right there that is a very questionable call it looks like the ball is about straight up with the goal line and not necessarily breaking the plane of the goal line well in any event had he not gotten in it would have been third down and an inch and chances are to put it in anyway we'll never know 13 to nothing good kick off taken by moris and down in the end zone for the Touchback and thus SMU from the 20yd line let's look at the horn defense there's deg great number 99 hethcock is the way he pronounces it Blake Broner the defensive end they play the basic 43 linebacking is their strength with Allard Edwards in the middle and June James on the outside very very tough Mustang first and 10 from the 20yd line Reggie dupart is the tail back that's Ron moris in motion and they start with dupart skittering out to the 23 for a gain of three the defensive backfield features James lot sophomore at one corner Tony Tillman the other Corner made the game saving tacka last week and then Steven Braggs is joined by the All America free safety jurry Gray think back a few years to Johnny Johnson patrolling that free safety spot for Texas some people are saying that gray is better than Johnson if he isn't he's close enough and that tells you what sort of player is second down and seven and it's deflected nearly intercepted June James going to run it in and he picked it off third down and seven now as Don King goes back to the huddle with his mates Duart and PAs the running backs with marz and Jacobs the W outs dun Campbell Jackson Richards helr and Reese the offensive line third and [Applause] seven King dropped at the 35 yd line by Ron Morris was there the ball was there and he couldn't handle it Texas will get it back Ron Morris has had butter fingers lately he's been having all kinds of problems he's dropped two today in recent weeks he's dropped a total of five coming into today's game it was estimated that SMU had 11 dropped passes which has really hurt the average of King sideline cut by Morris right here that ball hits him perfectly he loses his concentration and drops the ball punt is down at the 24 yd line off the foot of Dodge Carter and the Longhorns get it back after a 53 yd kick with a bound so Carter's average has been good I think that one thing that should be noted in defense of the SMU receivers is that Don King throws a much harder ball than Lance mle Haney so they're getting used to the acceleration of his passes 10 minutes and 12 seconds remaining in the third quarter Texas 13 SMU [Applause] nothing Harris now sets up to the left side and the play is run to the right with Nelson carrying out to the 30 yd line Kevin Nelson same name as the recent UCLA tail back who was the brother of Darren Nelson the great running back at Stanford and then the Minnesota Vikings Kevin Nelson now of course with the Los Angeles Express where he had a sensational rookie season probably the best allpurpose back that they had with the express however this Kevin Nelson no relation to those Nelsons they've Turned the Lights On now at Memorial Stadium in Austin as it's become very overcast again and on second down Nelson takes the pitch and Nelson takes it out to the 34 yd line upcoming will be a third down and one situation and this is a key third and one situation for Texas right now Al because here in the third quarter the momentum seems to have changed and the Longhorns have a chance to really put this game or take control of this game if they sustain this drive move down systematically for a touchdown especially the way they're playing defense third down call it closer to two and SMU able to stop him there's a fumble but it came after he was down play had been whistled dead as Nelson gets popped By Reggie Phillips coming up in the secondary number five and that means the long horse will have to kick it great defensive effort here by the Mustangs Reggie Phillips number five coming up from the secondary at the cornerback position he beats it and two other players in including Jerry Paul the nose guard in for the assist back to receive the kick off the foot of John telch is Andrew Livingston number six good kick by telic Livingston fields at the 23 and as he made the catch he was out of bounds stepped on the line Mustangs will have it there 812 to play third quarter it's the Longhorns leading 13 to nothing today it's not at all rare for drivers to keep their cars for 10 years or longer it's also not at all rare for 10-year-old BMWs to retain more than 90% of their original value which leads us to the BMW 318i one of the best reasons for buying it is because someday you might want to sell it [Music] must have four or five insurance is no event like it blazing the five burrows of the Big Apple defending Champions Ron Dixon gites plus thousand more the New York City Marathon live tomorrow on [Music] ABC crash section of the Texas band these two of us get a workout On Any Given Saturday in Boston as SMU starts things here with Atkins carrying for only a gain of one now if SMU is going to get back into this game they're down 13 nothing Don King is going to have to start finding the range King has not completed a pass since the 11 minute Mark of the first quarter and he's two out of 11 and he's missed his last eight and at all fairness to King a couple of those have been dropped but SMU is going to need King to really get hot the receivers to start holding on to get back in it second down and E ball at the 25 yd line sting on the ground with Atkins and nothing doing there it's going to be third and eight as the great made the stop I'm glad you mentioned the drop passes because I think that that's a statistic that is unfair to the quarterback there has never been a stat for dropped passes and because of that a quarterback May throw successfully during a season and it will not show up in the statistics at the end of the year third down and eight Pony Busters King and it is almost intercepted pass was low intended for pleasant and jury gray was smothering him mares Pleasant the intended receiver coming from his wide out position on a break in pattern broken up perfectly right here and nearly intercepted by The All-American free safety man number two Jerry gray so King has now missed his last nine passes Dodge Carter's had a workout today this is his seventh Punt and not one of his better ones it's taken by EPS who makes a fair catch at the 38 yd Line near Midfield horns get it back after a 37 yd punt giving the Cougars their first conference loss and they just announced a partial score in the Washington game as marel takes it out to the 41 the Huskies are number one and Arizona has the early lead in the second quarter Arizona's leading Washington by a score of six to nothing now Texas number two and one pole three in the other and in the one in which they are three Oklahoma was second but they will drop after they were upset today by Kansas so the way things are going for the Longhorns this could be a bonanza today they could be number one in both polls after today they were number one before the tie with Oklahoma on second and down it is picked off at the 40 yd line and Keith Brooks has just singlehandedly gotten SMU back into the game but there's a penalty marker at the 32 yd line there is a flag at the 32 yd line and it is against Texas so the touchdown counts and the Mustangs have just climbed right back at it ke Brooks L 13 the strong safety man is going to be on the coverage now watch him as he gambles and steps right in front of the Texas receiver that's number 95 William Harris bobbles the ball momentarily and now he has a clear Lane to the end zone as you said Al whole new ball game the de's extra point attempt is good everything was going Texas's way and then just one play can make a major difference of 42 yd touchdown return by Brooks and it comes with 558 to play in the third quarter so a whole new complexion right now 13-7 Texas on top well it's the kind of shootout now that we thought we would have historically as we said at the very top of the show this has been a story rivalry that pretty much transcends regionalism even though it has a great Regional flavor and if there's any one team that it seems to be unintimidated by all of the tradition of Texas football it is SMU especially recently and in this Stadium if you join us late mentioned early on that in 80 and 82 the last two times these teams played here SMU won and Freddy Acres teams have lost only six games in this ballpark in 8 years they did it mostly featuring big plays such as we just saw 13-7 as St to kick off Tillman takes it from the three out past the 10 gets up to the 20 and gets spun down at the 19 yd line Gabriel delagarza made the tackle first down for the horns next week again a reminder some of you will see BC against Penn State others will see Auburn against Florida check your local listings and it begins at 3:30 Eastern and 2:30 Central Time next Saturday CFA college football first down Todd Dodge leads the horns up to the 19 yd line he gives it to Rob Morell he is stopped at the 20 yd line after a gain of one so Texas have been pretty predictable running the right side with a high frequency on first down and obviously the ponies have charted that frequency a whole host of tacklers right there those signals coming in from the son of Fred akres simply indicate the play and the formation that are to be called by quarterback Todd Dodge second and eight ball at the 21 yd line out to the 25 and Jerome Johnson is wrestled down there no us one thing about Acres there Freddy's got a a credential on that's the sign of a of a head coach who doesn't have that enormous an ego anybody who would wear a credential into his own home stadium isn't taking himself that seriously well he's that kind of guy you know when we sat down and had coffee with him yesterday and kind of got the the game plan from him you pick up sort of a nice humility uh a friendly easygoing style somebody that he seems to just enjoy visiting with people I like that third down and four from the 25 yd line and a whistle had stopped the play before its Inception as a flag on the play flag and been thrown indicating that it'll probably be some form of illegal procedure which or delay of game and it's the latter delay of the game is the call yeah but any coach who would put that tag on in his home stadium ball the L you know as well as I do Lee a few guys would say well wait a second I I own this joint I'm going to we any credential out there I'll tell you what though they're pretty strict here in Memorial Stadium I almost didn't get to announce the game today because uh I almost didn't make it into the booth without a credential it might have been a break for some third down and it's complete out the 30 yd line William Harris thanes the Gat that was a clutch pass by quarterback Todd Dodge right there because the momentum was switching around again this is vintage Todd Dodge straight drop back moves to his left hits William Harris is tight end and that is catch number five on the day for William Harris for a total of 79 yds and it's Dodge going to the air again from the 30 comes back to Melle on the screen has some blocking and Mell spins his way for a first time to the 45 yd line I've always like this throwback screen here as to dodge rolls and then throws back to Rob Morell he picks up a wall of blockers little Juke step here now watch the whirly bird right here as he spins into the second great second and third effort by the quarterback turn tailb from the 45 yd line Johnson is greeted immediately Jerry B slams him down Jerry Mo High School fullback number 34 a guy we had a chance to talk to he's known as the ice box he has the size the quickness the strength and he plays with intensity he said that he was not at all intimidated by any of the Texas players and whoever they put in front of him he was going to beat up on it second down and 11 Dodge to Duhan first down well Brent Duhan for a guy whose very status was questionable before the game because of his limit practice time this week skin disease on his foot he had a nice day Duan the wide receiver on the left running a Breakin pattern he is The consumate Possession receiver he has the hands you like he runs very well disciplined pass routes and he has excellent concentration especially coming over the middle long horns from the 42 run a draw play here and that doesn't fool anybody Jerome Johnson is wrestled down by Jerry ball and John icman Jerry ball is everything we expected to be him to be and more as you mentioned he was a high school fullback He's listed at 257 lbs but I want to tell you something that's his uh that's his Monday weight I think by the time uh the game rolls around he's up closer to 265 he's a horse he's got a weigh in on Monday he said that's why he gets down to 257 second and two and it's Morell stop for No Gain it will be third down and two and let's go to the apple and get a report from lamps Allen in Seattle Washington the number one ranked huskys Trail 6 nothing at halftime the Arizona touchdown on an 89 yard interception return in the closing seconds of the half game being played in a light drizzle 10 turnovers by the two teams in the first half you guys both live on the west coast you think Washington should be number one well that's a good question and I'm not so sure after last week because they really struggled against Oregon and the special teams won that game and here they are turning the ball over again today as Dodge goes back on third down and two and shoots it out to Jerome Johnson and he gets the first or he gets down to the 36 yd line shy of the first as Keith Brooks it was third and 12 to begin the play makes the tackle I know one thing Jim there isn't a superow in football this year there's no question about that and that's why even a team like Texas in a year in which Freddy Acres feels he doesn't have as much talent as he's had in the P he's L to win his first national championship the way things are going I think all of this dates back to 1975 when the 3095 scholarship ruling was initiated the The Freshman rule in 73 and that ruling in 75 were two very influen influential rulings in college football over the last decade it's created a parody that was never there before toay game is the call against Texas here as they have fourth down up coming in the fourth quarter Texas 38 Z dead ball delay offense fourth down last year recall that long orangs came very close to a possible National Championship as they went through the regular year unbeaten Trail Nebraska in the PS couldn't capitalize nebrask lost to Miami because they were beaten by Georgia and the cotton ball now the punt off the foot of telch and it cannot be down but it winds up going out of Bounds at the three great kick by John telchin so he has pinned SMU deep and the Mustangs will take over with 10 seconds remaining after a 38 yd kick I don't know who should be number one these days Lee well I think you made an excellent point that there really isn't a Powerhouse in college football anymore and the with the scholarship ruling as it is it that may be something we're going to see more of in the decade ahead I know the people in Provo would like to see number one their team has done nothing to dispel that BYU as Reggie dupar takes it out to the 10 Brigham Young is undefeated they might move up the way things are going as well this week so the third quarter is now over 15 minutes to go in Austin and Texas leads SMU 13- 7 these days when you're pumping your own gas nobody's going to ask to check your oil that's your job and pens oil is the oil for the job when you're around Golf Course Machinery as much as I am you know you've got to check the oil to keep that engine protected and you know you've got to use a quality oil so when you check your oil and you should ask for pens oil pens oil quality protection ask for it there's a time in life for the beat their price this plus Austin's best customer service is why Frisco Electronics was voted the National Audio Video retailer of the Year why buy anywhere [Music] else Frisco Electronics we eat any price Reverend Dr man you shake that PT and I'll join your church [Music] at Riverbend we'll take them any way we can get [Music] them it has started to rain again light rain falling in Austin as we start the fourth period SMU has the football second and three at the 10 yd line Texas is ahead by six points and moving out for the first down is Reggie dupai number 21 going back to 82 SMU 29 and two and at least one tail back gains 100 plus yards pretty good barometer right there but as you can see today dupart only 33 and Atkins 38 as the horn defense has been very tough so that's going to be a key factor here in the fourth quarter is how effective is the tailback tandem of newart and Atkins King and he completes it out to the 30 yd line it's Ron morz so King finally finds the Mark again SMU sputtering and stuttering in their passing game G 15 here out cut by the wide receiver by SMU and that is Ron Morris number 23 the ball is thrown perfectly by Don King and he makes a quick move inside then back outside before he's colored by Steven Braggs number six in the secondary first and 10 mustangs from the 30 yd line King going for it all intended for Bobby leech and leech was well covered on the play play long horns play a lot of manto man in the secondary but then they also let gray roam free and he was right there along with haggy third quarter numbers show you that Texas continues to dominate there in the total yardage department and it shows the strength of the Texas defense because they have limited the ponies to 100 total yards now just as we said at the top of the show we thought Texas would pass more today see that they have 192 passing yards to a mere 29 for SMU second down and 10 King and that's complete to the 40 yd line as he hits Morris and he takes it to the 50 yd line and SMU which did not have a first down in the third quarter has picked up a couple here and there at Midfield so Ron Morris who's had a case of butter fingers lately seems to have found the stickum now watch this here's where he's very effective a little limp leg Juke step moved to the outside he has good moves in the secondary once he catches the ball I think he had a background as a running back at one time is that true Al I know last year as a freshman as a wide receiver he caught seven against texis in the game in Irving on first down dupart picks up about four I think what I'm thinking is they've used it on the reverse effectively at time have a used it today but we don't know what coms might have up his sleeve he's watched his team go through a totally lackluster second and third period offensively and yet it was the interception by Brooks that has him back in the game and now they are attempting to mount a su stained drive so far so good for them as it's second down at six to the 46 of Texas and dupart chws up about four more getting to the 42 and a penalty marker is down 1307 to play in the game options are being discussed at the moment with Texas indicating the penalty will be against SMU and that is the call Referee Joe Thomas sets it down back at the 49 illegal motion offense still second down second and 11 so penalties and Dro passes have really hurt the continuity of smu's offense [Applause] today they send Lee wide to the right on second and 11 King looks for Lee incomplete third down let's get a word from ly Swan Allan Lee you were talking about the number of drop balls part of the reason is the receivers are trying to catch Don King's very hard task with their hands instead of using their bodies more but now with a very light rain coming down and the receiver is thinking about catching a slightly wet football they might concentrate use R Moore and not drop as many Ron Morris caught two using his body not just his hands good point the man knows wherein he speaks one of the great receivers of all time played for a national championship team at USC in 72 then went on to collect Super Bowl rings with the Pittsburgh Steelers third down and 11 over the middle and incomplete Jeff Jacobs the intended receiver but that play was steiny by June Jones the linebacker who came flying in June James June James is the fastest of three very good linebackers for Texas and they feel in the 4-3 defense that that is the strength of their team one of the few teams that sticks to a 4-3 look with man coverage in the secondary Dodge Carter good average today he angles this kick for the near side and will it find the corner well it's close enough it gets to the seven yd line and that's with the long horns will start we have 1234 remaining in the game with Texas ahead by six points for 1985 col the Japanese car famous for Quality economy and performance now comes with a great new addition four doors the Colt is imported for Dodge and Plymouth and built by Mitsubishi in Japan cold it's all the Japanese you need to know muray muray when you have an insurance claim that's the moment of truth you want results as quickly as possible you don't want to call a stranger with a claim and with State Farm you don't you call your agent and State Farm claims people are there when you need them to make sure everything's handled fast and fair what makes State Farm claim service work so well is an agent who's available when you need help and people who follow through with your claim and like a good neighbor State Farm is there unsung hero for SMU today has been that hter Dodge Carter that's the fourth time he has put Texas inside its 20 yd line to start things Texas on top 13-7 as the horns take it from their own seven yd line 1234 to play in the game Nelson oh ripped by Tom line barer number 97 for No Gain here's Jim Lampley well Allan things were looking pretty good for Notre aame in Baton Rouge they were up 20 to7 until this happened a few moments ago Dalton hilard bounced off a tackler at the line of scrimmage faked another Notre Dame man clearly to his feet with 66 yards that made it 20 to 14 and put the pressure on Fon company they've since added a field goal in 2314 Notre Dame right now back to you Al LSU still trying to stay beaten saw Hillyard last week against Kentucky no doubt he's one of the best in the country as Nelson takes the ball out to the 12 yd line here and it will bring up third down five from the 12 we saw Dalton hilard score four times last week in that ball game against the Wildcats and you're right he has really emerged as one of the Premier running backs in the country had a great freshman year in 82 little off last year he's back in 84 but LSU is trying to get back not Dame trying to pull off a big upset third down and five Nelson looking for that first down and I don't think he got it because rodk Jones really popped him the ponies are popping right now watch again and and watch the aforementioned pop rodri Jones number one comes up in perfect position to really give a kiss to number 32 for Texas that's Kevin Nelson the tailback who was trying to take the blast play to the outside that little smooch was the difference between a first down and a puning situation teli to K as he stands at the one yd line High spinner 47 yd line and a thumble and a loose ball and SMU has it Livingston fumbling the ball but SMU able to keep possession of it inside Texas territory Andy Livingston number six tries to field this ball on the dead run now watch what he does he loses his concentration momentarily fumbles the ball right there it looks like it's going to be a Texas recovery but no one gets possession of the football before it goes out of bounds so that means SMU keeps the ball and they start here now at the 46 yd line of Texans first and 10 Ron moris in motion horns nearly jumped off and they did in fact this is a free play because we've got a penalty marker and well gray can be pretty angry that he didn't come up with it but it wouldn't have mattered anyway in fact we've got a couple of flags now we might have off setting penalties Texas
